christ_n death_n be_v a_o punishment_n for_o our_o sin_n which_o to_o any_o reasonable_a man_n be_v a_o sufficient_a answer_n to_o all_o the_o socinian_n cavil_v and_o indeed_o the_o whole_a current_n of_o scripture_n run_v so_o clear_a against_o they_o that_o they_o do_v as_o good_a as_o acknowledge_v that_o according_a to_o the_o most_o common_a and_o natural_a acceptation_n of_o its_o word_n it_o fair_o imply_v the_o doctrine_n we_o contend_v for_o viz._n that_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n be_v a_o real_a punishment_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n but_o their_o main_a plea_n be_v that_o it_o be_v unjust_a in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n to_o punish_v one_o man_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o another_o and_o therefore_o we_o ought_v rather_o to_o impose_v any_o sense_n on_o the_o word_n of_o scripture_n how_o foreign_a soever_o than_o attribute_n to_o god_n so_o great_a a_o piece_n of_o injustice_n as_o the_o punish_v his_o own_o son_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world._n but_o as_o for_o the_o justice_n of_o this_o procedure_n i_o shall_v endeavour_v by_o and_o by_o to_o clear_v and_o vindicate_v it_o ii_o he_o die_v in_o pure_a and_o spotless_a innocence_n because_o a_o man_n be_v a_o much_o noble_a creature_n as_o be_v far_o advance_v above_o a_o beast_n by_o the_o prerogative_n of_o his_o reason_n and_o consequent_o his_o death_n consider_v as_o a_o man_n must_v be_v a_o much_o more_o valuable_a exchange_n for_o the_o punishment_n that_o be_v due_a to_o those_o he_o die_v for_o but_o herein_o the_o heathen_a be_v miserable_o mistake_v that_o they_o do_v not_o consider_v that_o the_o man_n who_o they_o sacrifice_v be_v sinner_n as_o well_o as_o themselves_o and_o that_o it_o be_v a_o much_o great_a flaw_n in_o a_o expiatory_a sacrifice_n to_o be_v a_o sinner_n than_o to_o be_v a_o brute_n for_o whereas_o the_o latter_a only_o render_v it_o less_o effectual_a and_o valuable_a the_o former_a as_o be_v show_v before_o render_v it_o utter_o void_a and_o insignificant_a and_o therefore_o though_o the_o death_n of_o a_o man_n consider_v as_o such_o be_v of_o much_o more_o value_n than_o the_o death_n of_o a_o beast_n yet_o to_o expiate_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n there_o be_v more_o internal_a virtue_n and_o efficacy_n in_o the_o death_n of_o a_o innocent_a beast_n than_o of_o a_o sinful_a man_n because_o the_o latter_a can_v expiate_v only_o for_o his_o own_o sin_n whereas_o the_o former_a can_v have_v no_o sin_n but_o that_o of_o other_o to_o expiate_v since_o therefore_o man_n be_v all_o spot_a and_o blemish_v his_o eternal_a father_n must_v from_o thence_o necessary_o derive_v upon_o his_o sacrifice_n a_o immensity_n of_o worth_n and_o efficacy_n and_o hence_o we_o be_v say_v to_o be_v purchase_v with_o therefore_o since_o in_o consideration_n of_o christ_n blood_n he_o have_v superad_v these_o gift_n to_o the_o remission_n of_o our_o punishment_n it_o be_v evident_a that_o his_o blood_n be_v equivalent_a to_o both_o i._n e._n that_o it_o be_v not_o only_o a_o valuable_a consideration_n for_o the_o pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n but_o also_o for_o the_o assistance_n of_o his_o spirit_n and_o our_o eternal_a happiness_n iv._o his_o death_n be_v on_o his_o part_n voluntary_a and_o unforced_a for_o since_o as_o a_o sacrifice_n he_o be_v to_o be_v innocent_a and_o yet_o to_o undergo_v the_o punishment_n of_o our_o sin_n he_o can_v not_o be_v the_o one_o and_o do_v the_o other_o without_o his_o own_o free_a consent_n and_o approbation_n for_o no_o innocent_a person_n can_v be_v just_o make_v obnoxious_a to_o punishment_n but_o by_o his_o own_o act_n and_o choice_n because_o punishment_n bear_v a_o necessary_a respect_n to_o sin_n and_o the_o desert_n of_o suffer_v evil_n do_v and_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n can_v be_v so_o sufficient_a to_o this_o end_n as_o a_o valuable_a sacrifice_n to_o suffer_v in_o our_o stead_n and_o bear_v the_o punishment_n of_o our_o sin_n which_o reason_n carry_v with_o it_o such_o a_o awful_a severity_n as_o must_v needs_o dishearten_v any_o consider_a sinner_n from_o presume_v upon_o impunity_n if_o he_o go_v on_o in_o his_o sin_n for_o next_o to_o exact_v the_o punishment_n of_o the_o offender_n himself_o the_o most_o dreadful_a severity_n he_o can_v have_v express_v be_v not_o to_o remit_v it_o upon_o any_o consideration_n but_o this_o that_o some_o other_o shall_v undergo_v it_o in_o his_o stead_n and_o by_o how_o much_o great_a and_o more_o valuable_a the_o person_n be_v who_o undergo_v it_o for_o we_o so_o much_o great_a and_o more_o formidable_a god_n severity_n appear_v in_o remit_v it_o to_o we_o since_o therefore_o in_o consideration_n of_o our_o pardon_n god_n will_v admit_v no_o mean_a sacrifice_n than_o even_o while_o we_o be_v within_o the_o arm_n of_o his_o mercy_n for_o what_o man_n in_o his_o wit_n will_v take_v encouragement_n to_o sin_n on_o from_o a_o mercy_n that_o cost_v the_o blood_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n he_o that_o can_v presume_v upon_o such_o a_o reason_n of_o mercy_n have_v courage_n enough_o to_o outface_v the_o flame_n of_o hell_n and_o if_o hell_n itself_o have_v stand_v severity_n against_o our_o sin_n as_o this_o tremendous_a sacrifice_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n do_v if_o then_o a_o mercy_n that_o be_v so_o secure_v from_o be_v make_v a_o encouragement_n to_o sin_n by_o the_o terrible_a reason_n and_o consideration_n upon_o which_o it_o be_v found_v can_v deter_v we_o from_o sin_v on_o there_o be_v no_o wise_a mercy_n that_o we_o be_v capable_a of_o and_o consequent_o no_o mercy_n that_o the_o great_a god_n can_v indulge_v with_o safety_n to_o his_o authority_n for_o what_o mercy_n can_v be_v safe_a from_o our_o abuse_n and_o presumption_n if_o this_o saviour_n in_o his_o agony_n deprecate_v with_o fruitless_a cry_n that_o fearful_a cup_n which_o i_o deserve_v if_o after_o i_o have_v behold_v he_o hang_v on_o the_o cross_n cover_v with_o wound_n and_o blood_n and_o in_o the_o bitter_a agony_n of_o his_o soul_n hear_v he_o cry_v out_o my_o god_n my_o god_n why_o have_v thou_o forsake_v i_o and_o in_o a_o word_n if_o after_o i_o have_v see_v that_o god_n to_o who_o he_o be_v infinite_o dear_a and_o precious_a turn_v a_o deaf_a ear_n to_o his_o mournful_a cry_n and_o utter_o refuse_v to_o abate_v he_o so_o much_o as_o one_o degree_n or_o circumstance_n of_o a_o most_o shameful_a and_o torment_a death_n in_o consideration_n of_o my_o pardon_n if_o i_o say_v after_o such_o a_o horrible_a spectacle_n i_o have_v heart_n enough_o to_o sin_v on_o i_o be_o a_o courageous_a sinner_n indeed_o or_o rather_o a_o desperate_a one_o not_o to_o be_v affect_v or_o restrain_v by_o all_o the_o terror_n of_o hell._n three_o this_o sacrifice_n of_o christ_n be_v also_o to_o be_v consider_v as_o a_o most_o oblige_a expression_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o our_o saviour_n to_o we_o for_o if_o god_n have_v so_o please_v he_o may_v have_v exact_v our_o punishment_n at_o our_o own_o hand_n and_o make_v we_o smart_v for_o ever_o in_o our_o own_o person_n and_o this_o notwithstanding_o we_o have_v hearty_o repent_v for_o though_o to_o repent_v be_v the_o best_a thing_n a_o sinner_n can_v do_v yet_o it_o do_v not_o alter_v the_o nature_n of_o the_o sin_n he_o repent_v of_o so_o as_o to_o render_v it_o less_o evil_a or_o less_o deserve_v of_o punishment_n nor_o indeed_o be_v repentance_n a_o sufficient_a reason_n to_o move_v the_o alwise_a governor_n of_o the_o world_n to_o grant_v a_o public_a act_n of_o pardon_n and_o indulgence_n to_o sinner_n it_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o the_o safety_n of_o any_o government_n divine_a or_o humane_a so_o far_o to_o encourage_v offender_n as_o to_o indemnify_v they_o by_o a_o public_a declaration_n mere_o upon_o condition_n of_o their_o future_a repentance_n and_o amendment_n for_o all_o man_n be_v natural_o apt_a to_o presume_v that_o god_n will_v be_v better_o to_o they_o than_o his_o word_n and_o therefore_o have_v he_o declare_v that_o he_o will_v pardon_v they_o upon_o their_o repentance_n without_o any_o other_o reason_n this_o will_v have_v encourage_v they_o to_o hope_v that_o he_o may_v pardon_v they_o though_o they_o repent_v not_o at_o all_o or_o at_o least_o though_o they_o repent_v but_o by_o half_n wherefore_o since_o our_o repentance_n be_v not_o a_o sufficient_a reason_n to_o oblige_v god_n to_o grant_v a_o public_a pardon_n to_o sinner_n and_o since_o this_o be_v the_o best_a reason_n we_o can_v offer_v in_o our_o own_o behalf_n to_o move_v he_o thereunto_o it_o hence_o necessary_o follow_v that_o he_o may_v have_v just_o exact_v the_o punishment_n of_o our_o sin_n of_o we_o and_o make_v we_o smart_v for_o it_o for_o ever_o notwithstanding_o the_o best_a reason_n we_o can_v have_v offer_v he_o to_o the_o contrary_n but_o such_o be_v his_o goodness_n towards_o we_o as_o to_o admit_v another_o to_o suffer_v in_o our_o stead_n that_o so_o neither_o we_o may_v be_v ruin_v nor_o our_o sin_n be_v unpunished_a and_o then_o that_o the_o punishment_n of_o our_o sin_n may_v be_v a_o sufficient_a reparation_n to_o his_o while_o i_o serious_o consider_v it_o puzzle_v my_o conceit_n and_o outreach_v my_o wonder_n so_o that_o though_o i_o have_v infinite_a reason_n to_o rejoice_v in_o it_o yet_o while_o i_o be_o contemplate_v it_o i_o seem_v to_o be_v look_v down_o from_o some_o stupendous_a precipice_n who_o height_n fill_v i_o with_o a_o sacred_a horror_n and_o almost_o overset_n my_o reason_n but_o oh_o the_o amaze_a love_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n towards_o we_o that_o he_o shall_v put_v himself_o in_o our_o stead_n and_o interpose_v his_o own_o breast_n as_o a_o live_a shield_n between_o we_o and_o his_o father_n vengeance_n which_o consider_v the_o greatness_n of_o his_o person_n and_o of_o our_o unworthiness_n be_v such_o a_o stupendous_a expression_n of_o love_n as_o no_o romance_n of_o friendship_n ever_o think_v of_o and_o what_o be_v the_o proper_a influence_n of_o all_o this_o love_n but_o to_o oblige_v we_o for_o ever_o to_o god_n and_o our_o saviour_n in_o the_o band_n of_o a_o reciprocal_a affection_n to_o melt_v down_o our_o stubbornness_n and_o enmity_n against_o they_o and_o draw_v we_o on_o to_o our_o duty_n with_o the_o cord_n of_o a_o invincible_a indearment_n for_o be_v it_o possible_a my_o sin_n shall_v be_v as_o dear_a to_o i_o as_o the_o son_n of_o god_n be_v to_o his_o own_o father_n and_o yet_o the_o father_n leave_v he_o out_o of_o love_n to_o i_o and_o shall_v not_o i_o leave_v they_o out_o of_o love_n to_o he_o and_o when_o the_o son_n of_o god_n have_v be_v so_o kind_a to_o i_o as_o to_o lay_v down_o his_o life_n for_o i_o can_v i_o be_v so_o ingrateful_a to_o he_o as_o to_o dote_v upon_o those_o sin_n which_o he_o hate_v more_o than_o all_o the_o shame_n and_o torment_v which_o he_o endure_v on_o their_o account_n those_o sin_n that_o it_o and_o therefore_o since_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o the_o same_o individual_a action_n shall_v proceed_v from_o two_o distinct_a agent_n in_o this_o act_n of_o forgiveness_n the_o father_n must_v do_v something_o which_o the_o son_n do_v not_o and_o the_o son_n must_v do_v something_o which_o the_o father_n do_v not_o they_o must_v both_o of_o they_o act_v a_o appropriate_a part_n in_o in_o short_a i_o answer_v that_o the_o father_n part_n herein_o be_v to_o make_v a_o general_a grant_n of_o pardon_n to_o offender_n upon_o such_o a_o consideration_n as_o he_o shall_v think_v meet_a to_o accept_v and_o with_o such_o a_o limitation_n and_o restriction_n he_o shall_v think_v fit_a to_o make_v which_o general_a grant_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o those_o glad_a tiding_n of_o the_o three_o his_o make_n it_o with_o those_o restriction_n and_o limitation_n of_o faith_n and_o repentance_n first_o one_o thing_n peculiar_a to_o god_n the_o father_n in_o forgive_a sin_n be_v his_o make_v a_o general_n grant_v of_o pardon_n and_o forgiveness_n to_o sinner_n for_o the_o law_n against_o which_o all_o man_n have_v sin_v and_o by_o which_o they_o be_v oblige_v to_o eternal_a punishment_n be_v strict_o and_o proper_o the_o law_n of_o god_n the_o father_n who_o be_v the_o first_o and_o supreme_a person_n in_o the_o godhead_n be_v consequent_o always_o the_o first_o and_o supreme_a in_o the_o divine_a dominion_n now_o the_o divine_a dominion_n consist_v even_o as_o all_o other_o dominion_n do_v of_o a_o legislative_a and_o executive_a power_n the_o father_n must_v be_v
