sweetness_n in_o the_o pure_a fear_n and_o tremble_v not_o depart_v therefrom_o in_o what_o ever_o it_o do_v for_o god_n or_o receive_v from_o he_o till_o the_o salvation_n be_v whole_o wrought_v form_v and_o perfect_v in_o the_o fear_n abide_v for_o ever_o so_o that_o the_o pure_a love_n do_v not_o cast_v out_o the_o pure_a fear_n wherein_o be_v no_o bondage_n of_o the_o life_n but_o the_o preservation_n of_o the_o life_n from_o the_o bondage_n but_o swallow_v it_o up_o and_o comprehend_v it_o for_o the_o pure_a fear_n be_v but_o love_v descend_v and_o the_o pure_a love_n be_v but_o fear_v ascend_v the_o eternal_a principle_n or_o substance_n be_v one_o and_o the_o same_o in_o both_o quest_n be_v there_o then_o such_o a_o state_n of_o safety_n upon_o which_o the_o enemy_n can_v life_n to_o the_o eye_n of_o spiritual_n israel_n quest_n how_o do_v the_o son_n of_o god_n or_o eternal_a word_n in_o who_o be_v the_o light_n of_o life_n redeem_v man_n out_o of_o the_o fall_v he_o under_o the_o teach_n and_o chastizement_n of_o the_o law_n three_o by_o heal_v and_o bind_v he_o up_o with_o the_o oil_n of_o salvation_n in_o the_o power_n of_o the_o endless_a life_n which_o be_v the_o gospel_n quest_n how_o do_v god_n wound_v he_o in_o the_o natural_a and_o corrupt_a state_n answ_n by_o pursue_v he_o with_o his_o light_n which_o let_v he_o see_v what_o it_o be_v discover_v the_o evil_a and_o danger_n of_o it_o and_o so_o wean_a his_o heart_n from_o it_o and_o make_v he_o look_v out_o after_o and_o long_o for_o a_o redeemer_n o_o how_o burdensome_a be_v the_o captivity_n to_o the_o awaken_v soul_n when_o he_o have_v a_o glimpse_n of_o what_o man_n be_v before_o his_o fall_n when_o he_o have_v a_o place_n and_o be_v in_o the_o life_n with_o a_o spirit_n suitable_a to_o the_o life_n and_o what_o he_o be_v now_o in_o his_o estate_n of_o estrangedness_n and_o alienation_n from_o the_o life_n and_o whither_o he_o be_v go_v in_o his_o path_n of_o unrighteousness_n estrangedness_n and_o alienation_n and_o while_o his_o heart_n be_v thus_o turn_v from_o the_o land_n of_o death_n and_o captivity_n and_o long_v after_o the_o redeem_v power_n and_o virtue_n of_o the_o life_n the_o enemy_n the_o power_n of_o darkness_n lay_v load_n upon_o he_o draw_v he_o more_o and_o more_o under_o the_o chain_n and_o bond_n of_o iniquity_n to_o the_o utmost_a of_o its_o strength_n so_o that_o now_o lust_v abound_v evil_n increase_v temptation_n and_o snare_n multiply_v and_o in_o the_o land_n of_o captivity_n their_o strength_n be_v great_a the_o soul_n weak_a and_o faint_a and_o the_o redeem_v power_n and_o virtue_n seem_v very_o far_o off_o now_o this_o be_v the_o estate_n of_o conversion_n when_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o power_n of_o death_n and_o darkness_n turn_v the_o heart_n from_o they_o towards_o himself_o cause_v it_o to_o wait_v under_o the_o captivity_n for_o the_o appearance_n of_o the_o arm_n of_o his_o strength_n to_o break_v the_o yoke_n of_o the_o oppressor_n from_o off_o the_o neck_n of_o the_o oppress_a and_o so_o to_o bring_v out_o of_o the_o land_n of_o death_n and_o darkness_n into_o the_o travel_n towards_o the_o land_n of_o promise_n where_o the_o peace_n the_o life_n the_o liberty_n in_o the_o lord_n the_o rest_n the_o joy_n the_o full_a content_a and_o happiness_n be_v reap_v by_o the_o soul_n which_o follow_v the_o lamb_n thither_o quest_n how_o do_v god_n weaken_v the_o creature_n under_o the_o teach_n and_o chastisement_n of_o the_o law_n answ_n by_o exercise_v he_o towards_o free_a therefrom_o by_o the_o virtue_n of_o his_o life_n spring_v up_o in_o the_o heart_n than_o he_o exercise_v the_o heart_n and_o conversation_n towards_o the_o good_a and_o from_o the_o evil_a then_o he_o give_v out_o law_n for_o or_o against_o thing_n according_a as_o he_o find_v most_o proper_a to_o the_o estate_n of_o every_o particular_a soul_n now_o upon_o the_o give_v forth_o of_o the_o law_n the_o life_n be_v in_o some_o measure_n raise_v there_o be_v that_o which_o love_v its_o teach_n and_o pure_a path_n and_o there_o be_v that_o also_o which_o draw_v back_o from_o it_o and_o that_o be_v yet_o strong_a there_o come_v many_o stroke_n and_o chastisement_n from_o the_o lord_n upon_o his_o own_o dear_a child_n and_o these_o be_v bitter_a and_o to_o be_v force_v into_o the_o sin_n which_o it_o loathe_v and_o in_o heart_n be_v turn_v from_o and_o to_o be_v keep_v from_o the_o good_a which_o it_o belong_v after_o &_o in_o heart_n be_v unite_v to_o partly_o by_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o enemy_n and_o partly_o by_o reason_n of_o its_o own_o weakness_n and_o negligence_n this_o be_v bitter_a also_o insomuch_o as_o it_o cry_v out_o day_n after_o day_n and_o find_v this_o administration_n of_o the_o law_n almost_o as_o heavy_a a_o yoke_n as_o the_o land_n of_o captivity_n itself_o be_v because_o of_o the_o weakness_n of_o it_o through_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o quest_n what_o frame_v of_o spirit_n do_v they_o work_v the_o heart_n or_o mind_n into_o answ_n into_o very_o many_o precious_a one_o as_o for_o instance_n first_o they_o make_v the_o spirit_n poor_a the_o daily_a
grace_n even_o as_o the_o jew_n table_n or_o gather_v knowledge_n from_o moses_n and_o the_o prophet_n become_v their_o snare_n and_o trap._n the_o lord_n open_v their_o eye_n in_o his_o due_a time_n to_o discern_v it_o that_o they_o may_v not_o withstand_v that_o ministration_n and_o revelation_n of_o his_o everlasting_a gospel_n which_o god_n see_v good_a to_o visit_v the_o apostatise_v world_n they_o which_o i_o myself_o be_v wrought_v upon_o by_o and_o know_v not_o only_o the_o outward_a knowledge_n which_o they_o be_v acquaint_v with_o but_o also_o the_o inward_a work_n and_o i_o also_o know_v what_o i_o call_v the_o light_n of_o nature_n and_o what_o i_o call_v the_o light_n of_o the_o spirit_n the_o one_o whereof_o be_v not_o the_o other_o but_o differ_v as_o far_o as_o spirit_n and_o flesh_n secondâ—â—_n i_o also_o own_o all_o the_o open_n and_o refreshment_n which_o they_o receive_v from_o the_o lord_n in_o read_v of_o the_o scripture_n in_o their_o public_a or_o private_a exercise_n and_o the_o experience_n which_o they_o have_v from_o god_n in_o their_o own_o heart_n and_o i_o know_v that_o these_o thing_n in_o themselves_o be_v true_a in_o their_o proportion_n however_o their_o present_a sense_n and_o hold_v of_o they_o out_o of_o that_o wherein_o they_o receive_v they_o may_v just_o be_v judge_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o servant_n three_o though_o those_o thing_n be_v true_a in_o their_o day_n and_o in_o their_o proportion_n and_o measure_n yet_o in_o they_o they_o may_v lose_v their_o virtue_n and_o die_v and_o so_o they_o not_o retain_v the_o thing_n in_o its_o life_n in_o its_o own_o principle_n in_o the_o newness_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o that_o birth_n to_o which_o god_n give_v it_o but_o only_o a_o image_n of_o it_o in_o the_o natural_a understanding_n in_o the_o earthly_a part_n in_o the_o dead_a principle_n and_o then_o their_o knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o their_o experience_n can_v but_o be_v corrupt_v and_o now_o become_v the_o possession_n of_o death_n and_o the_o engine_n of_o death_n in_o their_o heart_n again_o god_n have_v somewhat_o further_o to_o manifest_v even_o to_o bring_v forth_o that_o which_o they_o so_o earnest_o pray_v for_o in_o that_o day_n which_o they_o have_v abide_v in_o that_o virtue_n wherein_o they_o pray_v may_v easy_o have_v discern_v and_o embrace_v but_o be_v out_o of_o that_o and_o please_v themselves_o with_o the_o literal_a knowledge_n of_o the_o thing_n they_o then_o receive_v hold_v they_o in_o the_o wise_a earthly_a part_n that_o part_n can_v but_o stumble_v at_o the_o low_a and_o contemptible_a appearance_n of_o god_n which_o be_v still_o offensive_a to_o that_o part_n the_o great_a glory_n of_o god_n be_v hide_v in_o a_o little_a seed_n and_o how_o can_v the_o great_a eye_n of_o the_o fleshly-wise_a see_v it_o we_o have_v moses_n and_o the_o prophet_n say_v the_o jew_n after_o the_o flesh_n but_o as_o for_o this_o man_n we_o know_v not_o whence_o he_o be_v even_o so_o it_o be_v now_o we_o know_v the_o relation_n which_o the_o scripture_n have_v give_v of_o christ_n by_o the_o apostle_n we_o be_v sure_o this_o be_v of_o god_n say_v the_o professor_n but_o as_o for_o this_o little_a seed_n of_o the_o kingdom_n or_o light_n of_o god_n in_o the_o heart_n we_o can_v believe_v that_o all_o we_o want_v be_v to_o spring_v up_o in_o it_o now_o four_o there_o be_v a_o necessity_n both_o of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o person_n to_o pass_v away_o and_o also_o of_o their_o experience_n to_o be_v give_v up_o and_o let_v fall_v in_o these_o two_o case_n follow_v first_o when_o the_o virtue_n be_v withdraw_v from_o they_o when_o death_n have_v catch_v they_o when_o they_o become_v death_n good_n for_o that_o which_o be_v receive_v from_o the_o life_n be_v only_o profitable_a to_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o virtue_n of_o the_o life_n when_o the_o earthly_a part_n have_v catch_v they_o and_o seat_v itself_o there_o they_o then_o become_v the_o strong_a hold_v of_o the_o enemy_n and_o the_o engine_n of_o death_n to_o the_o heart_n so_o that_o then_o life_n and_o true_a relief_n be_v not_o to_o be_v have_v in_o they_o but_o where_o the_o eternal_a virtue_n please_v next_o to_o appear_v second_o when_o god_n have_v somewhat_o to_o bring_v forth_o further_o in_o the_o world_n or_o in_o any_o particular_a heart_n to_o make_v way_n for_o it_o he_o bring_v death_n upon_o that_o which_o be_v before_o live_v thus_o when_o god_n be_v please_v to_o bring_v forth_o a_o great_a measure_n of_o faith_n and_o power_n of_o his_o spirit_n he_o distress_v the_o heart_n make_v the_o foregoing_a faith_n and_o power_n appear_v weak_a and_o pass_v away_o and_o many_o time_n for_o a_o season_n shut_v up_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o unbelief_n until_o the_o fresh_a faith_n and_o fresh_a power_n spring_v up_o and_o arise_v and_o this_o cause_v the_o necessity_n of_o the_o further_a dispensation_n of_o his_o eternal_a virtue_n to_o appear_v and_o the_o beauty_n of_o they_o to_o shine_v which_o they_o will_v not_o have_v do_v so_o abundant_o have_v it_o not_o be_v for_o the_o foregoing_a distress_n of_o the_o heaâ—_n theâ—â—â—â—â—e_v yet_o some_o thing_n further_o weighty_a upon_o my_o heart_n to_o lay_v before_o they_o needful_a for_o they_o to_o consider_v of_o which_o may_v be_v serviceable_a and_o helpful_a to_o they_o in_o their_o present_a condition_n if_o the_o lord_n please_v to_o open_v their_o heart_n and_o impress_v they_o thereon_o they_o be_v four_o proposition_n relate_v to_o the_o right_a knowledge_n of_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n which_o be_v these_o follow_v first_o that_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n come_v from_o the_o spirit_n as_o the_o scripture_n themselves_o come_v from_o the_o spirit_n so_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o they_o be_v alone_o give_v to_o any_o man_n which_o receive_v it_o by_o the_o same_o spirit_n and_o no_o man_n live_a can_v know_v the_o mind_n of_o the_o word_n which_o the_o spirit_n speak_v but_o as_o the_o same_o spirit_n which_o speak_v they_o gives_z the_o meaning_n of_o they_o second_o that_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n the_o live_a knowledge_n the_o serviceable_a knowledge_n be_v 〈◊〉_d hold_v in_o the_o spirit_n and_o in_o the_o birth_n which_o be_v of_o the_o spirit_n man_n natural_a part_n be_v not_o the_o true_a treasury_n nor_o be_v man_n reason_n to_o be_v master_n of_o any_o of_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n spirit_n but_o that_o which_o hold_v the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o kingdom_n the_o grace_n of_o the_o kingdom_n the_o live_a experience_n be_v that_o which_o be_v bear_v of_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o kingdom_n and_o man_n reason_n be_v for_o ever_o to_o be_v shut_v out_o of_o the_o thing_n of_o which_o i_o have_v certain_o receive_v from_o god_n and_o which_o the_o true_a birth_n at_o first_o have_v feed_v on_o the_o earthly_a birth_n will_v be_v catch_v at_o lay_v hold_n of_o and_o treasure_v up_o to_o feed_v on_o at_o another_o time_n likewise_o in_o my_o read_n of_o the_o scripture_n i_o lay_v open_a to_o this_o great_a snare_n of_o read_v in_o my_o own_o will_n and_o of_o gather_v from_o thence_o in_o my_o own_o understanding_n &_o so_o grow_v wise_a concern_v the_o thing_n of_o god_n after_o the_o flesh_n for_o though_o at_o that_o time_n i_o be_v not_o without_o live_a knowledge_n and_o experience_n of_o god_n yet_o i_o know_v not_o how_o to_o turn_v from_o the_o death_n nor_o to_o keep_v to_o the_o life_n and_o so_o the_o bad_a the_o lean_a the_o earthly_a the_o ill-favoured_a overgrew_n the_o good_a
he_o to_o a_o great_a wisdom_n glory_n and_o excellency_n than_o his_o creator_n have_v place_v he_o in_o with_o which_o he_o consult_v out_o of_o the_o dependence_n upon_o his_o creator_n fall_v from_o that_o which_o alone_o be_v able_a to_o uphold_v he_o in_o the_o pure_a state_n wherein_o he_o be_v make_v thus_o be_v he_o take_v in_o the_o snare_n of_o misery_n and_o bring_v to_o that_o loss_n which_o all_o the_o son_n of_o adam_n lie_v grovel_v under_o to_o this_o day_n when_o the_o lord_n at_o any_o time_n awaken_v the_o sense_n thereof_o in_o they_o quest_n what_o be_v the_o state_n of_o man_n in_o and_o since_o the_o fall_n answ_n a_o state_n of_o darkness_n a_o state_n of_o death_n a_o state_n of_o deep_a captivity_n wherein_o his_o soul_n body_n and_o spirit_n be_v become_v dark_a as_o to_o the_o light_n of_o god_n dead_a as_o to_o the_o life_n of_o righteousness_n and_o captive_a unto_o that_o spirit_n which_o have_v enter_v they_o by_o their_o harken_v thereto_o who_o dwell_v and_o rule_v in_o they_o in_o the_o darkness_n as_o god_n do_v before_o in_o the_o light_n quest_n how_o be_v man_n dark_a how_o be_v man_n dead_a be_v his_o soul_n or_o body_n dead_a as_o to_o their_o be_v or_o how_o else_o be_v it_o answ_n man_n be_v not_o dead_a as_o to_o his_o being_n either_o in_o soul_n or_o body_n but_o as_o to_o the_o right_n pure_a and_o sanctify_a state_n of_o each_o the_o vessel_n still_o remain_v the_o same_o in_o be_v but_o they_o be_v empty_v of_o their_o proper_a liquor_n and_o fill_v with_o other_o wine_n the_o understanding_n be_v the_o same_o the_o reason_n the_o same_o the_o will_v the_o same_o the_o memory_n the_o same_o the_o bodily_a member_n the_o same_o as_o to_o their_o be_v or_o matter_n but_o they_o be_v all_o otherwise_o relation_n to_o man_n recovery_n but_o only_o a_o change_n of_o the_o leaven_n answ_n man_n be_v become_v another_o thing_n by_o degeneration_n from_o the_o life_n he_o be_v so_o poison_a by_o sin_n can_v that_o eye_n see_v but_o according_a to_o the_o darkness_n judge_v evil_a good_a and_o good_a evil_n bitter_a sweet_a and_o sweet_a bitter_a quest_n but_o there_o be_v no_o man_n but_o have_v some_o light_n no_o man_n but_o at_o some_o time_n or_o other_o see_v good_a or_o evil_a in_o some_o measure_n answ_n that_o arise_v not_o from_o the_o light_n of_o man_n nature_n as_o it_o now_o attract_v he_o from_o the_o one_o to_o the_o other_o according_a to_o the_o lord_n be_v good_a pleasure_n who_o be_v both_o the_o light_n and_o also_o the_o determination_n of_o the_o proportion_n of_o every_o man_n visitation_n by_o it_o quest_n but_o have_v not_o man_n natural_o a_o light_n in_o the_o fall_v estate_n which_o discover_v unto_o he_o good_a and_o evil_a answ_n not_o a_o true_a light_n not_o a_o true_a discovery_n but_o only_o somewhat_o which_o the_o enemy_n set_v up_o in_o man_n as_o such_o to_o keep_v he_o in_o the_o entanglement_n of_o the_o deceit_n and_o out_o of_o and_o captivity_n yet_o these_o do_v not_o at_o present_a appear_v to_o man_n what_o they_o be_v but_o be_v miscoloured_a or_o paint_a to_o appear_v what_o they_o be_v not_o the_o better_a to_o deceive_v bewitch_v and_o entangle_v man_n therein_o the_o enemy_n do_v not_o represent_v darkness_n in_o its_o black_a hue_n death_n and_o captivity_n in_o its_o dreadful_a appearance_n to_o adam_n but_o as_o wisdom_n as_o light_n as_o a_o better_a life_n as_o a_o great_a freedom_n and_o thus_o he_o still_o enter_v man_n and_o after_o this_o manner_n he_o still_o dwell_v in_o man_n until_o the_o true_a light_n pursue_v he_o open_v and_o discover_v his_o deceit_n and_o draw_v man_n back_o from_o this_o false_a paradise_n of_o pleasure_n in_o wisdom_n and_o liberty_n out_o of_o the_o life_n into_o a_o sense_n of_o his_o want_n of_o and_o breathe_n after_o the_o true_a garden_n of_o the_o live_a god_n q._n be_v man_n then_o mistake_v in_o his_o judgement_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a since_o innocency_n which_o be_v nothing_o and_o have_v nothing_o but_o by_o a_o continual_a dependence_n on_o the_o goodness_n of_o the_o creator_n he_o seem_v also_o advance_v in_o life_n advance_v in_o liberty_n he_o can_v speak_v his_o own_o word_n think_v his_o own_o thought_n do_v his_o own_o will_n seek_v himself_o please_v himself_o satisfy_v himself_o the_o life_n of_o righteousness_n be_v a_o yoke_n a_o bond_n in_o his_o eye_n he_o be_v free_a from_o the_o restraint_n of_o it_o he_o have_v life_n in_o himself_o and_o be_v exceed_o wise_a in_o the_o compass_n of_o his_o own_o dominion_n principle_n not_o know_v the_o remove_n of_o their_o habitation_n thither_o nor_o think_v that_o they_o be_v there_o he_o that_o read_v these_o thing_n let_v he_o not_o strive_v to_o comprehend_v they_o but_o be_v content_a with_o what_o he_o feel_v thereof_o suitable_a to_o his_o own_o present_a estate_n and_o as_o the_o life_n grow_v in_o he_o and_o he_o in_o the_o life_n and_o he_o come_v to_o meet_v with_o the_o thing_n and_o exercise_n speak_v of_o the_o word_n and_o experience_n concern_v they_o will_v of_o themselves_o open_a to_o he_o and_o be_v useful_a and_o serviceable_a to_o he_o so_o far_o as_o the_o lord_n please_v he_o keep_v to_o the_o leading_n savour_n and_o principle_n of_o life_n in_o in_o himself_o wherein_o alone_o his_o knowledge_n sight_n growth_n and_o experience_n be_v safe_a now_o he_o that_o will_v travel_v safe_o in_o spirit_n unto_o the_o land_n of_o life_n let_v he_o wait_v to_o have_v these_o thing_n follow_v write_v by_o the_o finger_n of_o god_n in_o his_o heart_n and_o the_o sense_n and_o impression_n thereof_o preserve_v fresh_a in_o he_o first_o it_o be_v the_o free_a grace_n of_o god_n which_o begin_v the_o work_n of_o redemption_n if_o it_o be_v not_o mix_v with_o faith_n in_o the_o heart_n hear_v it_o prove_v ineffectual_a if_o strength_n issue_n forth_o from_o the_o lord_n yet_o if_o the_o soul_n receive_v not_o the_o strength_n which_o issue_v forth_o and_o bubble_v up_o in_o it_o or_o answer_v it_o not_o in_o give_v up_o to_o it_o and_o travel_v on_o the_o soul_n abide_v where_o it_o be_v at_o least_o if_o it_o also_o retire_v not_o backward_o from_o that_o estate_n and_o condition_n whereto_o the_o life_n have_v advance_v it_o for_o if_o the_o virtue_n of_o the_o life_n and_o grace_n be_v refuse_v there_o be_v a_o advantage_n give_v to_o death_n to_o re-enter_v and_o gain_v ground_n by_o its_o contrary_a virtue_n and_o power_n six_o mark_v therefore_o diligent_o how_o the_o lord_n do_v carry_v on_o
