miracle_n of_o wisdom_n and_o power_n than_o either_o of_o their_o rest_n can_v be_v and_o of_o great_a benefit_n and_o advantage_n to_o the_o child_n of_o man_n and_o yet_o because_o it_o be_v common_a and_o usual_a man_n be_v not_o affect_v with_o the_o admiration_n of_o it_o or_o gratitude_n for_o it_o but_o if_o the_o sun_n shall_v stand_v still_o but_o a_o day_n it_o will_v present_o put_v the_o world_n into_o admiration_n great_a work_n and_o benefit_n be_v light_o value_v or_o observe_v when_o common_a and_o ordinary_a three_o but_o although_o these_o be_v but_o the_o dull_a apprehension_n of_o the_o common_a sort_n of_o mankind_n yet_o there_o be_v many_o considerate_a and_o observe_a man_n in_o the_o world_n that_o have_v a_o better_a advertence_n and_o valuation_n of_o the_o divine_a beneficence_n even_o in_o these_o external_a dispensation_n of_o providence_n and_o they_o take_v notice_n of_o almighty_a god_n to_o be_v the_o bountiful_a author_n of_o all_o these_o external_a benefit_n and_o yet_o there_o be_v some_o consideration_n that_o make_v they_o set_v the_o less_o value_n upon_o they_o which_o in_o truth_n be_v of_o moment_n and_o they_o be_v principal_o let_v a_o man_n have_v the_o most_o plentiful_a enjoyment_n of_o the_o good_a thing_n of_o this_o life_n and_o a_o most_o high_a gust_n and_o relish_v of_o they_o yet_o still_o man_n be_v under_o the_o praesensation_n and_o apprehension_n of_o death_n which_o will_v infallible_o put_v a_o end_n to_o the_o best_a of_o these_o enjoyment_n and_o allay_v and_o abate_v the_o contentment_n of_o their_o present_a enjoyment_n so_o that_o according_a to_o the_o signicant_a expression_n of_o the_o apostle_n heb._n 2.15_o through_o fear_n of_o death_n man_n be_v all_o their_o life-time_n subject_a to_o bondage_n even_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o their_o most_o exquisite_a enjoyment_n five_o but_o this_o be_v not_o all_o the_o more_o serious_a sort_n of_o mankind_n begin_v to_o consider_v the_o excellence_n of_o the_o humane_a soul_n and_o the_o great_a disproportion_n that_o there_o be_v between_o the_o best_a external_o of_o this_o life_n and_o the_o capacity_n desire_n and_o delight_n of_o the_o humane_a neither_o do_v they_o rest_v there_o but_o they_o have_v not_o only_o strong_a suspicion_n but_o high_a persuasion_n of_o the_o immortality_n of_o the_o intellectual_a soul_n and_o they_o very_o easy_o find_v that_o those_o thing_n that_o we_o ordinary_o set_v a_o great_a esteem_n upon_o as_o bodily_a pleasure_n wealth_n riches_n fame_n power_n honour_n must_v needs_o be_v very_o insignificant_a thing_n to_o the_o state_n and_o condition_n of_o a_o separate_a immortal_a intellectual_a soul_n but_o somewhat_o else_o be_v to_o be_v reach_v after_o more_o suitable_a to_o such_o a_o nature_n and_o such_o a_o state_n and_o therefore_o these_o remporal_a benefit_n though_o they_o be_v of_o use_n for_o the_o state_n of_o this_o life_n be_v not_o of_o so_o true_a a_o value_n as_o ordinary_o man_n think_v and_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o even_o the_o wise_a and_o most_o perspicacious_a man_n be_v in_o the_o dark_a and_o know_v not_o how_o with_o any_o certainty_n to_o frame_v to_o themselves_o a_o idea_n of_o the_o state_n of_o a_o separate_a soul_n or_o wherein_o its_o happiness_n consist_v or_o how_o it_o be_v to_o be_v certain_o attain_v and_o although_o the_o more_o mercurial_a and_o poetical_a wit_n run_v out_o into_o a_o thousand_o fancy_n of_o elysian_a field_n of_o the_o migration_n of_o soul_n of_o the_o various_a period_n and_o peragration_n of_o the_o soul_n yet_o the_o more_o judicious_a though_o satisfy_v in_o the_o opinion_n of_o the_o immortality_n of_o the_o soul_n yet_o be_v not_o satisfy_v with_o these_o uncertain_a and_o conjectural_a supposition_n touch_v the_o manner_n of_o its_o future_a state_n and_o condition_n upon_o all_o these_o account_n the_o divine_a wisdom_n and_o goodness_n take_v another_o and_o more_o effectual_a and_o yet_o a_o most_o rational_a mean_n high_o suitable_a to_o the_o nature_n and_o exigence_n of_o mankind_n to_o retain_v he_o and_o reduce_v he_o to_o the_o true_a and_o just_a position_n of_o his_o soul_n in_o relation_n to_o the_o almighty_a and_o consequent_o to_o happiness_n and_o blessedness_n chap._n xi_o touch_v the_o second_o mean_n of_o conversion_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o god_n namely_o divine_a revelation_n i_o come_v now_o to_o that_o other_o great_a mean_n of_o the_o true_a conversion_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o god_n and_o place_v it_o in_o its_o true_a and_o by_o he_o and_o the_o christian_a religion_n i_o shall_v principal_o apply_v myself_o thereunto_o and_o upon_o the_o due_a consideration_n of_o this_o admirable_a attractive_a we_o shall_v find_v that_o it_o be_v not_o for_o nothing_o that_o our_o saviour_n say_v and_o if_o i_o be_v lift_v up_o i_o will_v draw_v all_o man_n to_o i_o and_o here_o i_o must_v again_o brief_o resume_v what_o i_o say_v in_o the_o former_a chapter_n viz._n that_o the_o three_o great_a hinge_n of_o the_o humane_a soul_n the_o ansulae_fw-la humanae_fw-la animae_fw-la which_o in_o a_o special_a manner_n convert_v and_o turn_v about_o the_o soul_n be_v love_n gratitude_n and_o dependence_n and_o those_o cord_n of_o a_o man_n that_o lie_v hold_v of_o these_o affection_n first_o be_v beauty_n excellence_n beneficence_n and_o bounty_n that_o which_o lay_v hold_v of_o the_o second_o be_v also_o beneficence_n and_o that_o which_o lay_v hold_v of_o the_o three_o be_v power_n goodness_n and_o a_o certain_a knowledge_n of_o our_o exigence_n fear_n and_o want_v which_o draw_v out_o the_o soul_n into_o trust_n dependence_n and_o invocation_n of_o that_o powerful_a good_a and_o all-knowing_a be_v and_o although_o these_o affection_n of_o the_o humane_a soul_n do_v principal_o and_o more_o immediate_o move_v and_o turn_v about_o the_o soul_n to_o the_o suitable_a object_n of_o those_o affection_n yet_o in_o as_o much_o as_o the_o humane_a soul_n be_v a_o intellectual_a and_o reasonable_a nature_n and_o all_o its_o faculty_n in_o their_o due_n orderly_o and_o regular_a act_n and_o motion_n act_n upon_o a_o presuppose_a intellection_n and_o with_o reason_n and_o deliberation_n we_o must_v therefore_o suppose_v that_o antecedent_n to_o the_o motion_n of_o these_o affection_n there_o must_v be_v a_o due_a discovery_n and_o apprehension_n of_o that_o object_n to_o which_o they_o be_v thus_o direct_v now_o upon_o a_o just_a and_o impartial_a consideration_n and_o reflection_n upon_o the_o christian_a doctrine_n the_o revelation_n of_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n jesus_n we_o shall_v find_v the_o most_o powerful_a effectual_a and_o rational_a mean_n contain_v and_o discover_v in_o it_o of_o convert_v the_o humane_a soul_n to_o god_n and_o place_v it_o in_o its_o just_a and_o true_a
froward_o and_o perverse_o and_o the_o natural_a object_n of_o the_o will_n unto_o which_o it_o be_v proper_o ordinate_v be_v to_o will_v that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o to_o will_v that_o chief_o which_o be_v the_o chief_a good_a and_o that_o subordinate_o which_o be_v a_o less_o or_o subordinate_a good_n 3._o the_o affection_n which_o whether_o they_o be_v distinct_a from_o the_o will_n or_o but_o the_o more_o intense_a motion_n of_o it_o be_v not_o necessary_a here_o to_o dispute_v but_o certain_o they_o have_v a_o great_a share_n in_o the_o bring_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o its_o just_a position_n and_o respect_n to_o almighty_a god_n and_o although_o the_o brute_n animal_n have_v certain_a passion_n analogal_a to_o these_o affection_n in_o man_n yet_o there_o be_v a_o great_a disparity_n between_o they_o 1._o because_o there_o be_v some_o affection_n that_o seem_v most_o peculiar_a to_o the_o humane_a nature_n i_o shall_v name_v but_o those_o of_o hope_n dependence_n and_o gratitude_n and_o although_o there_o be_v some_o extraordinary_a example_n and_o instance_n of_o such_o affection_n in_o animal_n yet_o in_o truth_n they_o be_v but_o shadow_n of_o these_o that_o be_v in_o the_o reasonable_a nature_n as_o the_o fantasy_n of_o brute_n be_v but_o a_o kind_n of_o shadow_n of_o the_o humane_a intellect_n and_o the_o appetite_n but_o a_o shadow_n of_o the_o will._n 2._o because_o even_o in_o all_o the_o affection_n or_o passion_n which_o seem_v most_o common_a to_o the_o humane_a and_o animal_n nature_n as_o love_n joy_n fear_v anger_n etc._n etc._n there_o be_v this_o great_a difference_n 1._o that_o the_o affection_n of_o the_o humane_a nature_n be_v natural_o under_o the_o regiment_n of_o reason_n and_o understanding_n and_o so_o be_v or_o aught_o to_o be_v govern_v by_o it_o and_o be_v therefore_o in_o man_n reasonable_a faculty_n but_o the_o passion_n of_o brute_n as_o they_o be_v excite_v mere_o by_o their_o sentient_a fantasy_n so_o they_o be_v at_o best_a but_o under_o the_o regiment_n of_o it_o so_o that_o the_o humane_a affection_n have_v another_o kind_n of_o formal_a nature_n or_o tincture_n as_o i_o may_v call_v it_o than_o the_o like_a affection_n in_o animal_n 2._o that_o the_o affection_n in_o animal_n and_o man_n that_o come_v under_o the_o same_o denomination_n yet_o be_v distinguish_v by_o their_o object_n the_o affection_n of_o a_o bare_a sentient_a nature_n as_o love_n hatred_n fear_v joy_n etc._n etc._n be_v always_o terminate_v in_o a_o sensible_a good_a to_o be_v desire_v or_o evil_a to_o be_v avoid_v but_o the_o affection_n of_o the_o humane_a soul_n have_v not_o only_o for_o their_o object_n sensible_a good_a or_o evil_a but_o also_o good_a and_o evil_a of_o a_o high_a and_o noble_a size_n namely_o moral_a or_o intellectual_a good_a to_o be_v prosecute_v and_o entertain_v with_o love_n joy_n delight_n complacency_n and_o desire_n and_o moral_a and_o intellectual_a evil_n to_o be_v shun_v or_o avoid_v or_o bear_v with_o hatred_n detestation_n grief_n etc._n etc._n and_o these_o object_n of_o this_o latter_a nature_n strike_v upon_o the_o humane_a affection_n with_o more_o vigour_n and_o energy_n by_o how_o much_o they_o be_v great_a and_o of_o great_a importance_n than_o sensible_a good_a or_o evil._n and_o as_o thus_o the_o divine_a goodness_n have_v furnish_v the_o humane_a soul_n with_o these_o excellent_a faculty_n and_o instrument_n to_o keep_v and_o bring_v about_o the_o humane_a soul_n to_o her_o due_a position_n to_o her_o maker_n so_o he_o have_v furnish_v these_o faculty_n with_o such_o object_n as_o be_v high_o serviceable_a and_o conducible_a to_o this_o end_n and_o these_o be_v contain_v in_o those_o two_o book_n or_o volume_n 〈◊〉_d that_o of_o the_o work_n and_o providence_n of_o god_n 2._o that_o of_o divine_a revelation_n both_o which_o do_v afford_v to_o the_o humane_a reason_n intellect_n and_o nature_n admirable_a motive_n to_o incline_v the_o soul_n to_o its_o true_a habitude_n and_o position_n towards_o almighty_a god_n but_o especial_o the_o latter_a of_o these_o chap._n x._o touch_v the_o rational_a instance_n and_o motive_n of_o the_o conversion_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o god_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o the_o work_n of_o nature_n and_o providence_n although_o almighty_a god_n have_v so_o order_v the_o frame_n of_o the_o humane_a soul_n that_o it_o have_v many_o handle_n as_o it_o be_v whereby_o it_o may_v be_v keep_v and_o turn_v about_o to_o its_o due_a position_n unto_o almighty_a god_n which_o be_v its_o happiness_n and_o perfection_n and_o he_o that_o make_v we_o know_v so_o well_o our_o frame_n that_o he_o can_v and_o do_v daily_o apply_v fit_a attractive_n to_o those_o ansulae_fw-la humanae_fw-la animae_fw-la yet_o among_o they_o all_o there_o be_v three_o principal_a affection_n of_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v of_o great_a moment_n and_o use_n in_o this_o matter_n viz._n love_n gratitude_n and_o dependence_n 1._o love_n be_v the_o strong_a and_o most_o vigorous_a affection_n of_o the_o humane_a soul_n it_o be_v the_o great_a spring_n that_o excite_v and_o govern_v all_o the_o wheel_n and_o motion_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o be_v in_o truth_n the_o natural_a and_o proper_a verticity_n of_o the_o humane_a soul_n the_o soul_n move_v entire_o after_o that_o which_o it_o entire_o love_v and_o that_o do_v as_o natural_o carry_v the_o motion_n of_o the_o soul_n towards_o it_o as_o the_o magnet_n govern_v the_o motion_n of_o the_o needle_n so_o that_o it_o be_v somewhat_o more_o than_o moral_o true_a anima_fw-la est_fw-la ubi_fw-la amat_fw-la if_o a_o man_n entire_o love_v wealth_n or_o pleasure_n or_o honour_n the_o soul_n entire_o move_v after_o it_o use_v all_o mean_n to_o attain_v it_o be_v disquiet_v and_o vex_v if_o she_o miss_v it_o and_o be_v in_o effect_n whole_o govern_v and_o manage_v by_o the_o strength_n of_o his_o love_n to_o it_o it_o command_v all_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o affection_n and_o action_n of_o the_o man_n his_o reverence_n his_o care_n his_o vigilance_n attention_n obedience_n love_n be_v as_o strong_a as_o death_n and_o that_o object_n that_o have_v once_o get_v this_o affection_n lead_v the_o man_n as_o it_o please_v and_o therefore_o hos_fw-la 11.4_o style_v the_o cord_n of_o a_o man_n the_o band_n of_o love_n and_o if_o this_o affection_n be_v principal_o set_v upon_o the_o glorious_a god_n the_o soul_n be_v place_v and_o settle_v in_o its_o due_a position_n and_o be_v entire_o under_o his_o government_n now_o there_o be_v two_o great_a and_o powerful_a attractive_n of_o this_o affection_n viz._n one_a excellency_n beauty_n or_o goodness_n which_o be_v but_o different_a expression_n of_o the_o same_o thing_n and_o 2._o love_n and_o the_o effect_n or_o indication_n thereof_o bounty_n and_o beneficence_n 1._o as_o to_o excellence_n and_o beauty_n it_o be_v in_o all_o instance_n a_o motive_n and_o excitation_n of_o love_n every_o thing_n in_o nature_n so_o much_o as_o it_o have_v of_o beauty_n and_o excellence_n so_o much_o of_o our_o love_n it_o do_v obtain_v now_o the_o admirable_a order_n and_o beauty_n of_o the_o universe_n do_v not_o only_o convince_v the_o understanding_n that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n the_o sovereign_a cause_n of_o this_o order_n and_o beauty_n of_o the_o universe_n and_o the_o several_a part_n thereof_o but_o do_v necessary_o conclude_v a_o transcendent_a beauty_n and_o excellence_n in_o that_o sovereign_a cause_n namely_o a_o immense_a power_n wisdom_n goodness_n and_o perfection_n in_o he_o who_o make_v and_o continual_o order_v and_o dispose_v it_o in_o that_o excellent_a frame_n and_o order_n 2._o beneficence_n and_o bounty_n unto_o allthing_n especial_o to_o that_o subject_a wherein_o this_o affection_n lodge_v and_o although_o it_o be_v true_a that_o the_o innate_a intrinsic_a appropriate_a goodness_n and_o perfection_n of_o any_o be_v do_v upon_o a_o true_a rational_a account_n deserve_v our_o love_n though_o it_o be_v not_o at_o all_o extrinsecally_a communicative_a of_o goodness_n to_o we_o yet_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o love_n and_o beneficence_n in_o any_o object_n do_v more_o vigorous_o work_v upon_o our_o affection_n of_o love_n than_o the_o simple_a intrinsic_a excellence_n of_o the_o object_n itself_o and_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o beneficence_n love_n and_o communicative_a goodness_n have_v not_o only_o a_o intrinsic_a beauty_n and_o loveliness_n but_o also_o give_v we_o a_o interest_n and_o benefit_n in_o it_o and_o by_o it_o and_o so_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o self-love_n of_o love_n to_o ourselves_o it_o increase_v our_o love_n to_o that_o beneficent_a object_n and_o self-love_n that_o have_v a_o great_a interest_n in_o every_o man_n render_v his_o love_n to_o a_o beneficent_a object_n more_o vigorous_a and_o active_a now_o if_o any_o man_n consider_v the_o incomparable_a bounty_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n to_o the_o humane_a nature_n upon_o the_o account_n
