unworthy_o be_v in_o this_o place_n the_o discern_a the_o lord_n body_n will_v secure_v man_n from_o it_o and_o this_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o make_v plain_a in_o these_o follow_a consideration_n 1._o the_o not_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n be_v here_o make_v the_o reason_n of_o their_o eat_n and_o drink_v unworthy_o this_o i_o have_v clear_v already_o to_o be_v the_o reason_n both_o of_o the_o sin_n and_o punishment_n too_o from_o whence_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n will_v secure_v from_o both_o for_o if_o man_n eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o because_o they_o do_v not_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n then_o if_o they_o do_v discern_v it_o they_o will_v not_o eat_v unworthy_o for_o the_o old_a rule_n be_v true_a in_o morality_n as_o well_o as_o nature_n and_o will_v hold_v in_o this_o instance_n as_o well_o as_o other_o take_v away_o the_o cause_n and_o the_o effect_n will_v cease_v 2._o but_o second_o this_o appear_v clear_a in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n for_o there_o be_v a_o direct_a and_o immediate_a virtue_n and_o power_n in_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n to_o cause_v in_o man_n all_o those_o qualification_n that_o render_v they_o meet_v for_o this_o service_n and_o sufficient_o secure_v they_o from_o eat_v unworthy_o as_o the_o corinthian_n do_v yea_o and_o from_o do_v so_o in_o any_o sense_n like_o unto_o they_o for_o first_o in_o general_n if_o man_n discern_v the_o lord_n body_n they_o will_v present_o perceive_v that_o this_o be_v a_o most_o sacred_a solemn_a service_n of_o religion_n and_o not_o any_o ordinary_a thing_n and_o by_o this_o will_v not_o only_o be_v admonish_v of_o that_o reverence_n and_o devotion_n that_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v perform_v with_o but_o strong_o induce_v to_o it_o man_n natural_o have_v some_o sense_n of_o reverence_n and_o awe_n upon_o their_o mind_n when_o they_o be_v address_v themselves_o to_o devotion_n and_o when_o they_o engage_v into_o the_o service_n of_o religion_n and_o so_o they_o will_v have_v here_o also_o when_o they_o consider_v what_o a_o solemn_a service_n of_o religion_n this_o be_v and_o have_v always_o be_v esteem_v to_o be_v in_o the_o christian_a church_n and_o true_o they_o can_v hardly_o be_v otherwise_o if_o they_o have_v any_o sense_n of_o religion_n or_o any_o dread_n of_o the_o almighty_a upon_o their_o spirit_n and_o second_o if_o man_n discern_v the_o lord_n body_n here_o so_o as_o to_o understand_v the_o special_a reason_n of_o this_o institution_n that_o it_o be_v to_o commemorate_v the_o mighty_a love_n of_o our_o lord_n in_o die_v for_o we_o that_o it_o be_v to_o be_v a_o religious_a solemn_a representation_n of_o his_o meritorious_a bitter_a death_n and_o passion_n for_o our_o sin_n they_o will_v find_v that_o it_o will_v even_o natural_o beget_v in_o they_o repentance_n and_o faith_n and_o joy_n and_o charity_n and_o thankfulness_n and_o a_o very_a high_a sense_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o effect_n of_o it_o so_o that_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n be_v so_o sensible_a a_o commemoration_n of_o this_o death_n the_o very_a visible_a representation_n of_o it_o the_o evident_a crucify_a of_o immediate_a service_n of_o religion_n and_o that_o the_o morsel_n of_o bread_n which_o they_o do_v eat_v and_o glass_n of_o wine_n that_o they_o do_v drink_v be_v sacramental_o the_o very_a body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n they_o put_v no_o difference_n between_o these_o sacred_a symboll_n of_o our_o lord_n body_n and_o blood_n and_o common_a food_n and_o drink_n nor_o show_v great_a reverence_n in_o eat_v and_o drink_v the_o one_o than_o do_v so_o to_o the_o other_o they_o eat_v in_o god_n house_n just_a as_o they_o do_v in_o their_o own_o and_o make_v no_o distinction_n between_o this_o and_o a_o common_a meal_n yea_o and_o which_o be_v something_o worse_o yet_o they_o do_v this_o not_o only_o thus_o irreverent_o but_o in_o intemperance_n and_o downright_a eat_n and_o drink_v unworthy_o we_o may_v full_o satisfy_v ourselves_o by_o consider_v the_o apostle_n deal_v with_o they_o in_o the_o latter_a part_n of_o this_o chapter_n where_o he_o fall_v upon_o this_o argument_n for_o because_o they_o be_v so_o gross_o ignorant_a in_o the_o reason_n and_o design_n of_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n he_o explain_v that_o full_o to_o they_o from_o verse_n 22d_o to_o the_o 27_o acquaint_v they_o with_o the_o author_n reason_n and_o purpose_n of_o this_o institution_n that_o it_o be_v a_o immediate_a service_n of_o religion_n institute_v by_o christ_n himself_o just_a before_o his_o suffering_n and_o institute_v to_o no_o mean_a a_o purpose_n than_o to_o be_v a_o solemn_a rite_n of_o commemorate_n his_o death_n which_o shall_v be_v use_v in_o his_o do_v you_o as_o oft_o as_o you_o drink_v it_o in_o remembrance_n of_o i_o for_o as_o often_o as_o you_o eat_v this_o bread_n and_o drink_v this_o cup_n you_o do_v show_v the_o lord_n death_n till_o he_o come_v and_o because_o through_o their_o scandalous_a intemperance_n precede_v they_o so_o horrible_o profane_v this_o service_n therefore_o he_o show_v they_o both_o the_o sin_n and_o great_a danger_n of_o it_o and_o press_v they_o to_o a_o serious_a care_n to_o reform_v it_o as_o you_o may_v see_v in_o the_o 27_o 28_o 29_o and_o 30_o verse_n wherefore_o whosoever_o shall_v eat_v this_o yet_o afterward_o that_o sense_n of_o thing_n may_v wear_v of_o and_o that_o purpose_n of_o mind_n abate_v and_o that_o specious_a promise_n may_v come_v final_o to_o nothing_o but_o this_o be_v not_o because_o the_o man_n be_v not_o then_o real_o in_o earnest_n but_o because_o afterward_o he_o be_v careless_a and_o trifle_a and_o easy_o lead_v away_o with_o temptation_n that_o interfere_v with_o his_o former_a promise_n and_o purpose_n of_o mind_n and_o so_o i_o doubt_v not_o it_o may_v be_v and_o too_o often_o be_v with_o man_n when_o they_o come_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n their_o pious_a purpose_n for_o that_o time_n may_v be_v sincere_a and_o in_o earnest_n and_o yet_o afterward_o wear_v off_o and_o come_v to_o nothing_o 3._o and_o therefore_o three_o i_o affirm_v a_o man_n in_o this_o case_n do_v come_v with_o one_o great_a qualification_n which_o shall_v attend_v his_o communicate_v in_o the_o sacrament_n i._n e._n a_o purpose_n of_o repentance_n and_o reformation_n and_o which_o will_v most_o certain_o secure_v he_o against_o all_o possibility_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o this_o text_n or_o any_o like_o it_o so_o that_o instead_o certain_o lie_v on_o this_o side_n see_v there_o be_v not_o any_o better_a course_n that_o he_o can_v at_o present_a take_v to_o fasten_v his_o good_a purpose_n and_o to_o secure_v it_o of_o effect_n than_o this_o for_o by_o this_o mean_v he_o will_v make_v his_o promise_n more_o solemn_a and_o affect_v upon_o himself_o cause_v it_o to_o stick_v the_o deep_a and_o close_o upon_o his_o own_o thought_n and_o receive_v that_o grace_n most_o infallible_o from_o god_n which_o if_o he_o be_v faithful_a and_o true_a unto_o his_o pious_a resolution_n will_v continue_v and_o he_o may_v be_v enable_v to_o act_v according_a to_o the_o intention_n of_o it_o sect_n vi_o 4._o i_o add_v now_o a_o four_o thing_n worthy_a to_o be_v consider_v in_o order_n to_o our_o satisfaction_n in_o this_o inquiry_n viz._n that_o whatever_o the_o sense_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o be_v in_o this_o text_n or_o whatever_o man_n can_v think_v to_o be_v like_o it_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n will_v secure_v they_o from_o it_o what_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n mean_v i_o have_v show_v already_o and_o i_o need_v repeat_v very_o little_a of_o it_o again_o it_o mean_v these_o two_o thing_n first_o put_v a_o difference_n between_o the_o consecrate_a element_n and_o common_a bread_n and_o wine_n the_o look_v upon_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n as_o a_o immediate_a duty_n and_o service_n of_o religion_n and_o consequent_o perform_v it_o with_o that_o devotion_n and_o seriousness_n that_o reverence_n and_o respect_n that_o man_n use_v to_o show_v in_o other_o service_n of_o religion_n the_o want_n of_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o make_v the_o corinthian_n to_o eat_v unworthy_o and_o provoke_v god_n to_o punish_v they_o with_o sundry_a disease_n and_o death_n as_o he_o afterward_o tell_v they_o they_o do_v not_o make_v any_o difference_n between_o this_o and_o a_o common_a meal_n in_o their_o own_o house_n they_o do_v not_o take_v it_o to_o be_v any_o peculiar_a act_n of_o religion_n they_o come_v intemperate_a and_o drink_v to_o the_o lord_n table_n and_o therefore_o to_o be_v sure_a be_v far_o enough_o from_o that_o reverence_n and_o devotion_n that_o so_o sacred_a a_o service_n ought_v to_o have_v be_v perform_v with_o second_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n mean_v something_o more_o not_o only_o to_o look_v upon_o this_o holy_a sacrament_n as_o a_o solemn_a and_o immediate_a act_n of_o religion_n but_o as_o the_o sacrament_n and_o immediate_a representation_n of_o christ_n body_n i._n e._n his_o body_n break_v and_o slay_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n and_o the_o communicate_v therein_o to_o be_v the_o commemoration_n of_o his_o death_n and_o partake_v in_o the_o bless_a effect_n of_o it_o to_o look_v beyond_o the_o element_n to_o that_o which_o they_o be_v design_v to_o signify_v and_o sacramental_o be_v to_o look_v upon_o the_o bread_n not_o as_o common_a bread_n but_o the_o substitute_n of_o christ_n body_n and_o the_o wine_n not_o as_o ordinary_a wine_n but_o the_o figure_n of_o his_o blood_n and_o so_o regard_v the_o whole_a service_n both_o as_o the_o most_o devout_a and_o solemn_a commemoration_n of_o christ_n death_n and_o passion_n for_o the_o expiation_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o partake_v as_o true_o and_o effectual_o in_o the_o benefit_n and_o blessing_n of_o his_o body_n and_o blood_n as_o if_o we_o do_v eat_v and_o drink_v that_o very_a body_n and_o blood_n themselves_o this_o be_v the_o great_a end_n of_o this_o service_n and_o the_o reason_n of_o our_o lord_n institution_n of_o it_o and_o to_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n be_v to_o understand_v it_o so_o and_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o such_o which_o it_o be_v most_o certain_a these_o corinthian_n be_v far_o from_o do_v either_o so_o ignorant_a as_o not_o to_o understand_v the_o reason_n of_o
love_n of_o god_n to_o poor_a man_n what_o can_v so_o clear_o and_o almost_o beyond_o desire_n assure_v we_o of_o it_o as_o the_o death_n of_o his_o son_n you_o may_v see_v how_o the_o scripture_n triumph_v in_o this_o and_o magnify_v it_o as_o the_o mighty_a instance_n the_o high_a exaltation_n of_o the_o divine_a love_n that_o be_v conceivable_a and_o how_o can_v i_o possible_o question_v ready_a to_o receive_v and_o embrace_v i_o it_o can_v not_o have_v affect_v i_o much_o more_o than_o the_o visible_a representation_n of_o all_o this_o in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n may_v do_v if_o i_o reflect_v upon_o it_o then_o as_o i_o shall_v and_o that_o i_o shall_v do_v if_o i_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n i_o can_v scarce_o entertain_v the_o thought_n of_o it_o with_o less_o than_o rapture_n and_o transport_v but_o i_o be_o certain_o the_o most_o ill_a nature_a person_n live_v and_o for_o ever_o the_o most_o unworthy_a of_o the_o blessing_n of_o it_o if_o i_o fail_v in_o any_o measure_n of_o joy_n and_o thankfulness_n that_o i_o be_o able_a to_o express_v these_o now_o be_v even_o the_o natural_a effect_n of_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n and_o they_o be_v such_o thing_n as_o will_v make_v we_o meet_a partaker_n of_o these_o holy_a mystery_n as_o our_o church_n speak_v they_o will_v set_v we_o far_o above_o that_o unworthiness_n that_o the_o corinthian_n be_v guilty_a of_o yea_o or_o any_o other_o thing_n that_o can_v be_v count_v unworthiness_n in_o preparation_n to_o it_o by_o all_o which_o thing_n my_o four_o proposition_n be_v i_o hope_v make_v good_a and_o bring_v to_o a_o issue_n and_o so_o be_v all_o that_o i_o intend_v to_o say_v on_o this_o first_o general_a collection_n chap._n iii_o i_o advance_v to_o the_o second_o collection_n that_o i_o make_v in_o order_n to_o the_o take_v off_o the_o exception_n that_o man_n make_v against_o come_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n upon_o the_o reason_n of_o these_o word_n viz._n that_o the_o possibility_n and_o danger_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o be_v not_o a_o sufficient_a reason_n for_o man_n to_o abstain_v from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n upon_o i_o add_v this_o collection_n to_o come_v up_o more_o close_o to_o the_o exception_n that_o man_n make_v against_o this_o service_n and_o that_o which_o they_o hope_v to_o excuse_v their_o neglect_n of_o it_o upon_o the_o danger_n they_o tell_v we_o of_o receive_v unworthy_o be_v great_a and_o the_o apostle_n say_v express_o that_o it_o be_v so_o now_o we_o have_v great_a reason_n to_o think_v ourselves_o unworthy_a to_o come_v and_o to_o fear_v we_o shall_v come_v unworthy_o if_o we_o adventure_v to_o come_v and_o therefore_o think_v it_o the_o safe_a course_n not_o to_o come_v at_o all_o than_o run_v so_o great_a a_o danger_n in_o come_v we_o be_v very_o unwilling_a to_o damn_v ourselves_o and_o we_o hold_v it_o the_o safe_a way_n to_o stay_v away_o and_o venture_v it_o to_o god_n mercy_n than_o by_o come_v unworthy_o to_o incur_v the_o plain_a danger_n of_o damnation_n this_o be_v the_o great_a exception_n and_o the_o general_a plea_n of_o man_n in_o this_o case_n and_o at_o the_o first_o hear_v it_o seem_v to_o argue_v great_a modesty_n and_o regard_n to_o a_o man_n eternal_a salvation_n and_o therefore_o deserve_v to_o be_v consider_v by_o we_o now_o though_o what_o i_o have_v already_o say_v be_v intend_v to_o satisfy_v this_o exception_n and_o if_o true_o consider_v be_v i_o hope_v of_o good_a effect_n in_o order_n thereto_o for_o if_o man_n consider_v that_o eat_n and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o this_o text_n be_v a_o sin_n that_o they_o can_v hardly_o be_v guilty_a of_o and_o when_o they_o consider_v themselves_o may_v be_v sure_o they_o be_v not_o it_o may_v sure_o enable_v they_o to_o surmount_v this_o scruple_n for_o while_o they_o be_v so_o far_o from_o the_o sin_n they_o need_v not_o be_v afraid_a of_o the_o punishment_n yet_o i_o advance_v this_o collection_n in_o order_n to_o the_o further_a satisfaction_n of_o it_o and_o when_o man_n be_v convince_v in_o this_o point_n also_o that_o if_o they_o be_v in_o any_o likelihood_n or_o danger_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o yet_o that_o be_v not_o a_o sufficient_a reason_n for_o they_o to_o abstain_v from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n upon_o than_o it_o may_v reasonable_o be_v hope_v that_o they_o will_v no_o long_o stick_v at_o this_o exception_n nor_o hope_v to_o be_v excuse_v upon_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o this_o therefore_o be_v that_o which_o i_o be_o go_v to_o make_v good_a the_o truth_n and_o reasonableness_n of_o that_o the_o possibility_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o be_v not_o a_o sufficient_a reason_n for_o man_n to_o keep_v away_o from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n upon_o nor_o fit_a to_o be_v admit_v as_o a_o excuse_n in_o this_o case_n and_o therefore_o how_o honest_a and_o sincere_a how_o conscientious_a and_o tender_a soever_o man_n may_v account_v themselves_o in_o stay_v from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n upon_o this_o exception_n yet_o it_o be_v a_o temptation_n and_o a_o snare_n a_o very_a great_a error_n and_o mistake_n and_o that_o which_o will_v never_o bear_v they_o out_o in_o this_o omission_n and_o this_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o make_v good_a first_o by_o the_o circumstance_n of_o this_o place_n and_o the_o apostle_n discourse_n in_o it_o and_o second_o by_o some_o argument_n found_v upon_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o thing_n 1._o from_o the_o circumstance_n of_o the_o apostle_n discourse_n in_o this_o place_n there_o be_v many_o thing_n in_o it_o pertinent_a to_o my_o purpose_n but_o i_o shall_v only_o brief_o observe_v these_o few_o that_o follow_v first_o the_o corinthian_n be_v gross_o guilty_a of_o this_o sin_n they_o do_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o the_o most_o notorious_a and_o scandalous_a manner_n possible_a the_o apostle_n plain_o tell_v they_o so_o instance_n in_o evident_a matter_n of_o fact_n and_o blame_v they_o with_o that_o sharpness_n that_o so_o foul_a a_o matter_n just_o deserve_v yea_o second_o he_o aggravate_v the_o sin_n and_o guilt_n of_o this_o miscarriage_n to_o a_o very_a high_a degree_n and_o threaten_v it_o with_o a_o very_a sharp_a and_o severe_a punishment_n and_o yet_o three_o after_o all_o this_o he_o do_v not_o give_v they_o any_o the_o least_o allowance_n or_o liberty_n to_o stay_v from_o this_o holy_a service_n till_o they_o have_v repent_v of_o and_o reform_v sufficient_o this_o miscarriage_n he_o do_v not_o tell_v they_o that_o their_o unworthiness_n render_v they_o unfit_a to_o come_v to_o the_o table_n of_o the_o lord_n or_o give_v they_o a_o dispensation_n from_o it_o he_o do_v not_o advise_v they_o to_o stay_v away_o for_o the_o future_a till_o they_o have_v better_o fit_v themselves_o for_o fear_v of_o damnation_n by_o come_v unworthy_o you_o do_v not_o read_v one_o word_n speak_v by_o he_o to_o any_o such_o purpose_n but_o rather_o direct_o the_o contrary_a let_v a_o man_n examine_v himself_o and_o so_o let_v he_o eat_v and_o when_o you_o come_v together_o tarry_v one_o for_o another_o and_o if_o any_o man_n hunger_n let_v he_o eat_v at_o home_n that_o you_o come_v not_o together_o to_o condemnation_n in_o all_o which_o the_o apostle_n do_v not_o advise_v they_o to_o intermit_v this_o service_n and_o let_v it_o alone_o till_o they_o have_v better_a consider_v it_o and_o better_o prepare_v themselves_o for_o it_o but_o he_o require_v they_o still_o to_o keep_v up_o the_o practice_n of_o it_o but_o to_o reform_v their_o great_a
