that_o purpose_n but_o alas_o we_o be_v so_o far_o from_o use_v any_o such_o diligence_n in_o endeavour_v to_o make_v sure_a to_o ourselves_o our_o eternal_a happiness_n though_o we_o may_v be_v always_o as_o sure_o that_o we_o shall_v have_v power_n to_o do_v this_o as_o we_o be_v that_o we_o sincere_o endeavour_v it_o that_o we_o hardly_o once_o consider_v that_o we_o be_v in_o any_o danger_n of_o lose_v it_o sure_o it_o will_v be_v grant_v by_o all_o that_o a_o bless_a life_n for_o ever_o in_o heaven_n after_o this_o very_a short_a and_o very_o troublesome_a life_n on_o earth_n shall_v be_v at_o a_o end_n be_v a_o very_a desirable_a thing_n and_o such_o as_o one_o can_v but_o desire_n when_o he_o have_v well_o consider_v that_o there_o it_o may_v be_v have_v but_o here_o it_o can_v and_o though_o there_o may_v be_v some_o who_o do_v not_o yet_o believe_v that_o such_o a_o life_n of_o eternal_a blessedness_n be_v to_o be_v have_v in_o heaven_n after_o death_n yet_o i_o dare_v say_v that_o even_o these_o seeing_z they_o know_v they_o must_v short_o die_v can_v hearty_o wish_v it_o may_v be_v so_o i_o can_v easy_o be_v persuade_v to_o think_v that_o any_o one_o can_v hate_v life_n for_o any_o thing_n else_o but_o the_o trouble_n and_o the_o misery_n which_o he_o find_v it_o can_v be_v without_o and_o therefore_o i_o believe_v that_o no_o man_n will_v willing_o die_v and_o be_v no_o more_o for_o ever_o suppose_v it_o possible_a that_o he_o may_v live_v again_o for_o ever_o without_o any_o such_o trouble_n or_o misery_n now_o every_o one_o know_v that_o he_o must_v die_v and_o that_o it_o can_v be_v long_o ere_o he_o must_v live_v no_o more_o here_o and_o therefore_o no_o man_n can_v choose_v but_o wish_n that_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a he_o may_v live_v soever_o it_o may_v be_v be_v to_o be_v look_v upon_o as_o the_o only_a time_n of_o make_v a_o eternal_a life_n sure_a unto_o we_o if_o we_o let_v this_o time_n pass_v over_o we_o before_o we_o be_v prepare_v for_o that_o eternity_n it_o be_v like_a to_o prove_v unto_o we_o a_o eternity_n of_o sorrow_n now_o be_v we_o travel_v towards_o god_n our_o happiness_n and_o those_o heavenly_a mansion_n life_n wherein_o but_o few_o walk_n if_o then_o we_o step_v out_o of_o the_o one_o way_n we_o must_v needs_o be_v in_o the_o other_o for_o there_o be_v no_o middle_a path_n to_o be_v find_v wherein_o we_o may_v walk_v and_o neither_o go_v to_o life_n nor_o distraction_n the_o broad_a way_n be_v that_o of_o man_n lust_n wherein_o there_o be_v latitude_n enough_o and_o the_o narrow_a way_n be_v the_o way_n of_o god_n commandment_n and_o a_o man_n must_v be_v very_o strict_a and_o upright_a in_o his_o walk_v therein_o and_o must_v not_o swerve_v either_o to_o the_o right-hand_a or_o to_o the_o left_a if_o he_o have_v a_o mind_n to_o be_v safe_a it_o seem_v i_o must_v needs_o say_v one_o of_o the_o strange_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n to_o i_o that_o we_o all_o shall_v be_v so_o exceed_o concern_v as_o at_o every_o turn_n we_o show_v ourselves_o to_o be_v about_o our_o live_n safe_o and_o comfortable_o in_o this_o present_a world_n so_o that_o we_o can_v hear_v the_o least_o ill_a news_n but_o it_o put_v we_o quite_o out_o of_o humour_n and_o we_o be_v all_o in_o fear_n what_o will_v become_v of_o we_o and_o yet_o so_o very_a few_o among_o we_o seem_v to_o have_v any_o concernment_n at_o all_o upon_o they_o what_o shall_v become_v of_o they_o when_o they_o die_v i_o confess_v if_o man_n can_v be_v any_o way_n assure_v that_o there_o be_v nothing_o at_o all_o to_o be_v expect_v after_o death_n i_o shall_v the_o less_o wonder_n that_o their_o whole_a concern_n shall_v be_v for_o this_o life_n because_o i_o know_v nothing_o else_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v concern_v for_o but_o see_v it_o be_v a_o impossible_a thing_n that_o any_o one_o shall_v be_v assure_v of_o that_o and_o see_v we_o have_v all_o the_o assurance_n that_o man_n can_v have_v of_o the_o contrary_a to_o wit_n that_o a_o endless_a state_n of_o either_o happiness_n or_o misery_n shall_v follow_v our_o short_a life_n here_o what_o a_o unaccountable_a madness_n seem_v this_o to_o be_v which_o have_v so_o general_o possess_v we_o to_o be_v so_o concern_v how_o we_o shall_v fare_v for_o a_o few_o day_n here_o and_o altogether_o as_o regardless_o for_o so_o the_o most_o of_o we_o seem_v to_o be_v how_o it_o shall_v go_v with_o we_o for_o evermore_o whence_o can_v this_o proceed_v but_o from_o inconsideration_n or_o want_v of_o think_v on_o thing_n as_o man_n shall_v do_v if_o we_o do_v real_o think_v in_o earnest_n what_o we_o be_v whence_o we_o come_v what_o we_o have_v here_o to_o do_v how_o soon_o we_o may_v and_o must_v go_v hence_o whither_o we_o be_v to_o go_v and_o what_o shall_v final_o become_v of_o we_o we_o must_v needs_o become_v a_o little_a more_o serious_a and_o provident_a both_o than_o now_o we_o be_v and_o how_o little_a assurance_n soever_o we_o have_v of_o what_o be_v to_o come_v we_o will_v be_v concern_v a_o little_a so_o to_o behave_v ourselves_o in_o this_o world_n as_o we_o may_v go_v out_o of_o it_o with_o this_o comfort_n at_o least_o that_o if_o we_o can_v be_v sure_a of_o no_o good_a after_o death_n yet_o we_o shall_v not_o need_v to_o fear_v any_o evil_n any_o one_o that_o be_v wise_a if_o he_o have_v no_o hope_n to_o he_o happy_a will_v yet_o take_v a_o course_n to_o be_v safe_a and_o yet_o god_n know_v the_o generality_n of_o people_n be_v far_o short_a of_o this_o wisdom_n all_o we_o seem_v to_o mind_n be_v some_o little_a thing_n that_o we_o take_v pleasure_n in_o for_o the_o present_a and_o all_o our_o care_n be_v not_o to_o lose_v that_o whatever_o it_o be_v so_o long_o as_o we_o live_v but_o we_o so_o little_o think_v of_o
what_o either_o shall_v be_v or_o may_v be_v after_o death_n yea_o and_o what_o be_v stranger_n consider_v we_o know_v it_o so_o well_o we_o so_o little_o think_v that_o we_o be_v every_o moment_n step_v towards_o the_o grave_a and_o that_o the_o next_o step_n we_o take_v for_o aught_o we_o know_v may_v be_v into_o it_o that_o death_n surprise_v most_o of_o we_o when_o ever_o it_o come_v and_o how_o slow_o soever_o through_o god_n wonderful_a forbearance_n it_o come_v yet_o it_o steal_v upon_o we_o unaware_o and_o take_v we_o unprepared_a and_o so_o prove_v what_o we_o be_v well-taught_a to_o pray_v against_o a_o sudden_a death_n to_o most_o of_o we_o and_o if_o there_o be_v any_o thing_n worse_o than_o another_o after_o death_n as_o certain_o there_o be_v both_o a_o better_a and_o a_o worse_a than_o any_o thing_n can_v be_v in_o this_o world_n we_o be_v sure_a of_o it_o to_o make_v we_o a_o little_a more_o sensible_a of_o this_o great_a folly_n and_o to_o show_v we_o what_o course_n we_o be_v to_o take_v if_o we_o have_v any_o mind_n to_o do_v ourselves_o good_a or_o have_v no_o mind_n to_o make_v ourselves_o miserable_a for_o ever_o be_v the_o design_n of_o this_o discourse_n and_o i_o shall_v divide_v it_o into_o two_o part_n in_o the_o former_a of_o which_o i_o shall_v show_v the_o necessity_n of_o a_o serious_a consideration_n and_o give_v some_o few_o direction_n for_o it_o in_o the_o late_a shall_v be_v show_v the_o danger_n of_o delay_v our_o repentance_n and_o a_o exhortation_n give_v to_o make_v haste_n to_o live_v well_o that_o we_o may_v be_v word_n i_o think_v on_o my_o way_n and_o turn_v my_o foot_n unto_o thy_o testimony_n i_o make_v haste_n and_o delay_v not_o to_o keep_v thy_o commandment_n where_o we_o be_v to_o observe_v both_o make_v haste_n to_o keep_v his_o commandment_n whatsoever_o he_o find_v amiss_o in_o himself_o he_o immediate_o correct_v it_o by_o a_o speedy_a repentance_n regulate_v his_o whole_a conversation_n henceforward_o by_o the_o right_a rule_n thereof_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n 2._o that_o which_o he_o do_v not_o be_v this_o he_o delay_v not_o to_o keep_v god_n commandment_n or_o as_o some_o man_n serious_a thought_n or_o which_o can_v be_v think_v worthy_a of_o his_o care_n and_o fit_a for_o he_o to_o busy_v his_o head_n much_o about_o but_o the_o thing_n which_o a_o man_n shall_v serious_o think_v upon_o be_v such_o thing_n as_o we_o be_v wont_n to_o call_v considerable_a thing_n matter_n of_o some_o weight_n and_o of_o some_o concernment_n to_o he_o one_o way_n or_o other_o and_o especial_o such_o as_o be_v of_o great_a concernment_n they_o shall_v be_v such_o as_o it_o may_v do_v one_o some_o good_a to_o think_v on_o and_o the_o serious_a think_v of_o which_o may_v change_n of_o the_o whole_a man_n for_o the_o better_a both_o of_o the_o inward_a temper_n of_o his_o heart_n and_o of_o the_o outward_a course_n of_o his_o life_n and_o conversation_n and_o can_v it_o now_o be_v needful_a to_o prove_v that_o this_o can_v be_v do_v too_o soon_o can_v one_o too_o early_o get_v out_o of_o danger_n and_o be_v safe_a can_v one_o too_o soon_o begin_v to_o grow_v happy_a need_v i_o use_v argument_n to_o convince_v we_o that_o one_o can_v make_v too_o much_o haste_n to_o be_v a_o good_a man_n and_o yet_o so_o strange_o bewitch_v and_o blind_v be_v sinner_n such_o a_o almost_o inncredible_a power_n have_v satan_n get_v over_o man_n to_o blind_v their_o eye_n and_o darken_v their_o mind_n that_o they_o dote_v on_o nothing_o so_o much_o as_o on_o their_o own_o foulness_n and_o deformity_n and_o nothing_o be_v hard_a to_o convince_v they_o of_o than_o that_o it_o be_v better_a for_o they_o to_o be_v clean_a than_o filthy_a well_o than_o sick_a good_a than_o bad_a wise_a than_o fool_n happy_a than_o miserable_a who_o will_v think_v that_o a_o reasonable_a creature_n shall_v be_v so_o senseless_a and_o yet_o almost_o all_o the_o work_n and_o i_o be_o sure_a the_o hard_a part_n of_o that_o which_o the_o minister_n of_o christ_n have_v to_o do_v be_v to_o make_v man_n sensible_a of_o this_o that_o a_o man_n can_v too_o soon_o be_v good_a the_o our_o infancy_n and_o so_o soon_o as_o we_o have_v offend_v god_n it_o be_v our_o duty_n to_o be_v sorry_a that_o we_o have_v offend_v he_o be_v it_o no_o more_o but_o a_o hatred_n of_o sin_n a_o confess_v of_o it_o or_o resolve_v against_o it_o yea_o or_o any_o sort_n of_o actual_a forsake_v
that_o they_o grow_v insensible_a of_o their_o danger_n and_o not_o only_o so_o but_o they_o can_v find_v much_o pleasure_n too_o such_o as_o it_o be_v in_o serve_v their_o lust_n nay_o and_o whilst_o they_o do_v so_o can_v flatter_v themselves_o with_o a_o foolish_a conceit_n that_o all_o be_v well_o enough_o with_o they_o and_o just_o so_o may_v a_o man_n in_o a_o swoon_n or_o in_o any_o stupify_a disease_n be_v insensible_a that_o he_o be_v in_o danger_n of_o death_n and_o a_o man_n in_o his_o sleep_n may_v not_o perceive_v that_o the_o house_n over_o his_o head_n be_v on_o fire_n this_o as_o absurd_a as_o to_o set_v ourselves_o in_o our_o saviour_n stead_n and_o a_o take_n upon_o we_o to_o make_v for_o ourselves_o a_o new_a and_o easy_a way_n to_o heaven_n that_o i_o may_v not_o seem_v to_o say_v this_o without_o good_a reason_n let_v it_o serious_o be_v consider_v that_o repentance_n be_v not_o only_o a_o duty_n but_o the_o special_a privilege_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o good_a news_n which_o the_o angel_n bring_v from_o heaven_n be_v that_o god_n have_v send_v we_o the_o saviour_n who_o he_o have_v in_o the_o beginning_n promise_v to_o sinner_n and_o the_o good_a news_n that_o our_o saviour_n bring_v we_o be_v that_o god_n will_v for_o his_o sake_n accept_v of_o the_o sinner_n repentance_n and_o faith_n in_o he_o and_o this_o be_v bless_a tiding_n indeed_o to_o a_o sinful_a world_n tell_v it_o be_v true_a before_o in_o the_o old_a testament_n and_o shadow_v forth_o in_o the_o law_n but_o now_o most_o full_o declare_v and_o glorious_o confirm_v by_o jesus_n christ_n in_o the_o new_a testament_n the_o law_n of_o innocence_n and_o covenant_n of_o work_n make_v with_o adam_n allow_v of_o no_o such_o thing_n as_o repentance_n all_o it_o say_v be_v this_o do_v this_o and_o live_v do_v it_o not_o and_o die_v in_o the_o day_n thou_o eat_v thereo_n thou_o shall_v sure_o die_v gen._n ii_o 17._o the_o first_o break_v of_o the_o law_n be_v death_n there_o can_v be_v no_o safe_a delay_n to_o keep_v it_o because_o every_o delay_n of_o keep_v it_o be_v a_o break_n of_o it_o for_o it_o be_v a_o not_o do_v of_o the_o commandment_n and_o death_n be_v threaten_v no_o repentance_n therefore_o can_v have_v place_n under_o this_o covenant_n it_o be_v the_o new_a covenant_n of_o grace_n that_o make_v way_n for_o repentance_n and_o this_o be_v the_o gospel-grace_n that_o sinner_n who_o have_v break_v god_n law_n and_o for_o that_o be_v by_o the_o sentence_n of_o the_o law_n doom_v to_o die_v shall_v yet_o if_o they_o repent_v find_v mercy_n with_o god_n through_o jesus_n christ_n this_o be_v the_o gospel_n which_o the_o apostle_n say_v be_v preach_v before_o to_o abraham_n gal._n iii_o 8._o and_o therefore_o be_v before_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n so_o long_o that_o it_o be_v first_o preach_v by_o god_n in_o that_o gracious_a promise_n of_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o woman_n gen._n iii_o 15._o if_o repentance_n have_v not_o be_v allow_v of_o from_o the_o first_o man_n be_v sin_v even_o all_o along_o to_o the_o come_n of_o our_o saviour_n into_o the_o world_n as_o well_o as_o after_o his_o come_n then_o have_v all_o man_n during_o that_o long_a tract_n of_o time_n for_o about_o four_o thousand_o year_n perish_v in_o their_o sin_n but_o to_o prevent_v this_o it_o please_v god_n that_o so_o soon_o as_o the_o law_n be_v break_v the_o gospel_n shall_v be_v preach_v that_o man_n may_v believe_v and_o repent_v and_o be_v save_v in_o a_o most_o astonish_a condescension_n to_o the_o weakness_n of_o sinner_n he_o mitigate_v the_o rigour_n of_o the_o law_n and_o be_v please_v to_o accept_v henceforward_o of_o a_o sincere_a obedience_n to_o it_o instead_o of_o a_o perfect_a fulfil_n of_o it_o hearty_o a_o man_n must_v endeavour_v to_o do_v the_o whole_a will_n of_o god_n and_o whatever_o fail_n he_o find_v in_o himself_o he_o must_v as_o hearty_o repent_v of_o they_o and_o believe_v that_o god_n for_o christ_n his_o sake_n will_v not_o only_o forgive_v he_o his_o repent_a fail_n but_o also_o reward_v his_o sincere_a obedience_n with_o eternal_a life_n this_o be_v the_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o this_o admit_v of_o no_o delay_n of_o our_o sincere_a obedience_n or_o of_o our_o repentance_n but_o make_v it_o our_o duty_n every_o day_n sincere_o to_o obey_v and_o unfeigned_o to_o repent_v and_o he_o that_o do_v not_o so_o daily_o sin_v against_o the_o gospel_n of_o grace_n and_o he_o that_o hope_v for_o salvation_n whilst_o he_o thus_o daily_o sin_v against_o the_o gospel_n of_o grace_n must_v needs_o frame_v to_o himself_o in_o his_o imagination_n some_o other_o gospel_n than_o that_o which_o christ_n have_v preach_v as_o the_o foundation_n of_o his_o hope_n the_o gospel_n yearly_a die_n in_o the_o heat_n and_o wantonness_n of_o their_o youthful_a blood_n how_o many_o in_o the_o very_a fullness_n of_o strength_n and_o vigour_n how_o many_o in_o the_o very_a throng_n of_o their_o worldly_a business_n and_o whilst_o they_o be_v as_o busy_a as_o the_o bee_n in_o gather_v for_o old_a age_n how_o many_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o their_o mirth_n and_o jollity_n yea_o in_o the_o very_a act_n of_o sin_n in_o their_o drunkenness_n and_o gluttony_n their_o fornication_n and_o adultery_n their_o theft_n and_o robbery_n their_o anger_n and_o revenge_v how_o many_o in_o the_o height_n of_o their_o security_n and_o confidence_n sleep_v in_o their_o bed_n ride_v merry_o on_o the_o road_n go_v busy_o about_o their_o common_a affair_n it_o be_v no_o news_n to_o hear_v of_o sudden_a and_o unexpected_a death_n of_o many_o sort_n and_o less_o strange_a can_v it_o be_v to_o any_o one_o to_o see_v those_o young_a people_n cut_v off_o by_o death_n who_o think_v it_o too_o soon_o to_o become_v good_a and_o serious_a and_o be_v unwilling_a to_o mar_v their_o juvenile_a pleasure_n with_o many_o thought_n of_o piety_n and_o religion_n let_v we_o but_o think_v how_o many_o be_v already_o dead_a who_o delay_v their_o repentance_n with_o as_o much_o confidence_n as_o we_o can_v do_v to_o repent_v hereafter_o till_o they_o have_v no_o time_n leave_v they_o to_o repent_v in_o and_o how_o fruitless_o they_o now_o lament_v their_o folly_n in_o do_v so_o think_v but_o what_o they_o will_v now_o be_v content_a to_o give_v that_o they_o may_v have_v their_o life_n to_o begin_v again_o on_o earth_n and_o whether_o they_o will_v be_v that_o grant_v they_o venture_v again_o to_o delay_v their_o repentance_n and_o hazard_v another_o sudden_a fall_n into_o those_o intolerable_a torment_n which_o now_o they_o feel_v o_o let_v we_o not_o stay_v till_o think_v of_o this_o will_v do_v we_o no_o good_a let_v we_o not_o go_v on_o till_o we_o fall_v into_o their_o condition_n and_o experience_n the_o torment_n of_o vain_a and_o fruitless_a wish_n let_v we_o not_o indulge_v our_o infidelity_n as_o to_o these_o thing_n till_o some_o come_v from_o the_o dead_a to_o make_v we_o believe_v lest_o we_o be_v make_v before_o we_o fear_v it_o to_o see_v and_o feel_v what_o we_o make_v no_o more_o haste_n to_o escape_v we_o say_v still_o we_o will_v repent_v and_o become_v new_a man_n to_o morrow_n but_o alas_o we_o know_v not_o yet_o whether_o we_o shall_v live_v till_o then_o nay_o we_o know_v not_o but_o that_o our_o body_n may_v be_v in_o the_o grave_a and_o our_o soul_n in_o hell_n to_o morrow_n and_o for_o this_o very_a reason_n because_o we_o repent_v not_o to_o day_n who_o then_o that_o be_v wise_a will_v venture_v one_o moment_n long_o on_o such_o a_o uncertainty_n but_o suppose_v we_o may_v live_v and_o have_v the_o time_n we_o at_o present_a presume_v so_o groundless_o upon_o we_o may_v not_o be_v one_o jot_n the_o better_a for_o it_o when_o we_o have_v it_o we_o be_v to_o consider_v yet_o far_o how_o many_o thing_n may_v happen_v to_o we_o at_o that_o time_n or_o before_o which_o may_v as_o much_o disable_v we_o to_o repent_v as_o death_n itself_o we_o may_v live_v and_o yet_o be_v as_o good_a as_o dead_a unto_o all_o manner_n of_o religious_a duty_n and_o exercise_n we_o may_v be_v we_o know_v not_o how_o soon_o in_o such_o a_o condition_n as_o we_o may_v not_o be_v able_a either_o to_o reflect_v on_o what_o be_v past_a or_o understand_v what_o be_v present_a or_o consider_v what_o be_v to_o come_v we_o can_v be_v ignorant_a how_o many_o disease_n sudden_o surprise_v man_n which_o though_o they_o do_v not_o immediate_o deprive_v they_o of_o life_n yet_o destroy_v their_o memory_n and_o understanding_n and_o reason_n or_o so_o weaken_v they_o that_o they_o can_v be_v of_o little_a use_n for_o the_o exercise_n of_o repentance_n may_v we_o not_o be_v sudden_o take_v with_o a_o apoplexy_n or_o a_o lethargy_n with_o a_o frenzy_n or_o melancholy_a or_o dotage_n may_v we_o not_o become_v mad_a or_o foolish_a and_o so_o distract_a and_o craze_v in_o our_o head_n that_o we_o can_v at_o all_o consider_v either_o what_o we_o do_v or_o what_o we_o shall_v do_v yea_o suppose_v none_o of_o these_o thing_n befall_v we_o yet_o be_v there_o other_o disease_n and_o pain_n whereunto_o we_o be_v subject_a and_o which_o we_o may_v labour_v under_o a_o very_a considerable_a time_n before_o they_o kill_v we_o by_o which_o yet_o we_o may_v be_v bring_v into_o such_o a_o condition_n as_o we_o shall_v find_v it_o very_o hard_a to_o perform_v any_o religious_a duty_n as_o we_o ought_v we_o may_v lie_v under_o such_o continual_a and_o even_o intolerable_a pain_n of_o body_n under_o such_o daily_a languish_n and_o faint_n and_o decay_v of_o strength_n and_o spirit_n that_o we_o shall_v have_v very_o little_a freedom_n or_o strength_n of_o mind_n leave_v we_o to_o consider_v and_o do_v all_o that_o be_v needful_a to_o repentance_n which_o till_o then_o have_v be_v delay_v why_o do_v not_o we_o think_v ourselves_o concern_v to_o prevent_v all_o these_o evil_n be_v we_o not_o sensible_a that_o such_o thing_n often_o befall_v man_n who_o as_o little_a fear_v they_o as_o we_o do_v and_o may_v they_o not_o for_o aught_o we_o
consider_v both_o that_o the_o minister_n may_v take_v heed_n that_o he_o go_v not_o beyond_o his_o commission_n in_o comfort_v the_o sick_a and_o that_o we_o may_v all_o learn_v in_o due_a time_n how_o far_o we_o may_v build_v and_o rely_v on_o such_o comfort_n as_o man_n in_o such_o a_o case_n can_v administer_v unto_o we_o and_o therefore_o i_o here_o in_o answer_n to_o it_o say_v these_o thing_n first_o we_o very_o earnest_o exhort_v the_o worst_a of_o sinner_n even_o to_o the_o last_o gasp_n to_o repent_v of_o their_o sin_n because_o though_o we_o can_v assure_v they_o that_o god_n will_v now_o at_o the_o last_o hour_n accept_v of_o their_o late_a repentance_n see_v he_o have_v nowhere_o as_o be_v say_v before_o declare_v that_o he_o will_v and_o though_o by_o reason_n of_o what_o be_v say_v in_o his_o word_n concern_v his_o ordinary_a method_n of_o deal_n with_o sinner_n we_o be_v rather_o afraid_a that_o he_o will_v not_o yet_o we_o do_v not_o know_v the_o depth_n of_o god_n mercy_n nor_o the_o riches_n of_o his_o infinite_a goodness_n nor_o what_o he_o may_v be_v please_v to_o do_v in_o a_o extraordinary_a way_n if_o sinner_n at_o last_o use_v extraordinary_a endeavour_n and_o if_o by_o such_o motive_n and_o argument_n and_o prayer_n as_o we_o can_v use_v god_n seem_v to_o work_v mighty_o on_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o die_a sinner_n though_o we_o dare_v not_o assure_v he_o of_o the_o life_n which_o god_n have_v not_o promise_v to_o a_o deathbed_n repentance_n and_o therefore_o we_o can_v be_v sure_a that_o he_o will_v give_v it_o yet_o dare_v we_o not_o leave_v he_o to_o despair_v because_o we_o know_v not_o but_o god_n may_v give_v it_o second_o we_o therefore_o exhort_v the_o worst_a of_o die_a sinner_n to_o repentance_n and_o declare_v unto_o they_o the_o gracious_a and_o comfortable_a promise_n which_o god_n in_o christ_n have_v make_v to_o all_o true_a penitent_n because_o god_n have_v command_v we_o to_o preach_v repentance_n unto_o sinner_n without_o exception_n and_o herein_o as_o we_o obey_v so_o we_o imitate_v our_o lord_n and_o master_n jesus_n christ_n who_o cease_v not_o to_o invite_v all_o sinner_n to_o repentance_n or_o to_o promise_v good_a thing_n to_o the_o penitent_a even_o when_o he_o who_o know_v the_o heart_n of_o all_o man_n know_v that_o many_o of_o they_o to_o who_o he_o preach_v will_v never_o repent_v nor_o become_v capable_a of_o the_o good_a thing_n promise_v god_n have_v bid_v we_o exhort_v to_o repentance_n but_o he_o have_v not_o tell_v we_o that_o we_o be_v to_o cease_v from_o exhort_v any_o one_o that_o will_v hear_v we_o so_o long_o as_o he_o live_v we_o can_v therefore_o excuse_v ourselves_o if_o we_o do_v not_o all_o we_o can_v to_o render_v they_o who_o will_v not_o repent_v inexcusable_a it_o will_v not_o be_v safe_a for_o we_o to_o leave_v they_o this_o plea_n that_o they_o want_v any_o mean_n or_o help_v at_o any_o time_n that_o we_o can_v afford_v they_o three_o we_o hold_v on_o to_o exhort_v even_o to_o the_o last_o because_o how_o near_o unto_o death_n soever_o the_o sinner_n may_v seem_v to_o be_v we_o know_v that_o the_o lord_n of_o life_n and_o death_n can_v raise_v he_o up_o again_o and_o we_o know_v not_o but_o he_o may_v do_v so_o and_o let_v he_o live_v yet_o long_o to_o complete_a the_o repentance_n which_o may_v now_o be_v begin_v god_n be_v please_v sometime_o by_o severe_a chastisement_n and_o heavy_a affliction_n to_o awake_a sinner_n to_o repentance_n who_o have_v live_v in_o sin_n secure_o many_o year_n and_o now_o when_o the_o sinner_n see_v himself_o at_o the_o pit_n brink_n and_o hell_n open_v its_o mouth_n to_o swallow_v he_o up_o he_o may_v possible_o think_v it_o fit_a to_o hearken_v to_o counsel_n of_o safety_n though_o no_o more_o can_v be_v say_v but_o possible_o he_o may_v yet_o be_v save_v we_o know_v not_o but_o now_o he_o may_v enter_v upon_o a_o repentance_n which_o though_o it_o will_v do_v he_o no_o good_a shall_v he_o now_o die_v may_v prove_v unto_o salvation_n if_o he_o recover_v and_o live_v to_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o it_o which_o god_n be_v yet_o able_a to_o make_v he_o do_v and_o have_v not_o tell_v we_o that_o he_o will_v not_o do_v last_o we_o to_o the_o very_a last_o exhort_v to_o repentance_n and_o mind_n die_v sinner_n of_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n to_o penitent_n because_o that_o whether_o it_o will_v then_o avail_v to_o salvation_n or_o no_o yet_o we_o be_v sure_a enough_o it_o can_v do_v they_o no_o hurt_n it_o be_v certain_o their_o duty_n to_o repent_v and_o we_o to_o exhort_v they_o to_o it_o and_o as_o it_o will_v hurt_v we_o to_o neglect_v our_o duty_n so_o can_v it_o not_o hurt_v they_o to_o be_v mind_v of_o they_o for_o sinner_n to_o be_v make_v sensible_a of_o their_o sin_n and_o of_o this_o aggravation_n of_o they_o that_o they_o have_v despise_v the_o comfort_n and_o promise_n of_o mercy_n to_o the_o penitent_a be_v a_o good_a thing_n whatever_o the_o end_n may_v be_v of_o such_o sinner_n god_n be_v glorify_v by_o man_n be_v bring_v to_o a_o sense_n and_o acknowledgement_n of_o his_o authority_n and_o goodness_n and_o of_o their_o own_o wickedness_n and_o baseness_n by_o their_o confess_v that_o in_o all_o that_o be_v bring_v upon_o they_o he_o be_v righteous_a and_o they_o be_v wicked_a by_o man_n acknowledge_v at_o last_o that_o god_n have_v be_v always_o good_a especial_o in_o his_o great_a patience_n and_o long_a forbearance_n hitherto_o and_o that_o he_o be_v now_o very_o just_a in_o his_o punishment_n for_o our_o obstinacy_n glory_n be_v give_v to_o god_n and_o this_o aught_o to_o be_v do_v and_o if_o this_o will_v not_o qualify_v sinner_n for_o pardon_n and_o salvation_n it_o be_v however_o a_o part_n of_o their_o duty_n and_o may_v for_o aught_o we_o know_v mitigate_v the_o severity_n of_o their_o sentence_n and_o lessen_v their_o torment_n but_o now_o after_o this_o be_v say_v it_o be_v a_o very_a sad_a thing_n that_o man_n shall_v by_o wilful_a delay_n bring_v themselves_o into_o this_o uncomfortable_a condition_n and_o it_o be_v a_o very_a afflict_a thing_n to_o every_o good_a minister_n of_o christ_n to_o stand_v by_o the_o bedside_n of_o those_o die_a person_n to_o who_o he_o be_v able_a to_o speak_v no_o more_o comfort_n than_o all_o this_o amount_n to_o for_o first_o he_o can_v speak_v no_o comfort_n at_o all_o to_o the_o sick_a person_n but_o upon_o supposition_n that_o he_o be_v what_o he_o find_v too_o much_o cause_n to_o fear_n he_o be_v not_o a_o sincere_a penitent_n and_o this_o be_v very_o sad_a and_o second_o he_o can_v speak_v no_o comfort_n but_o on_o supposition_n of_o such_o a_o repentanee_n as_o the_o sick_a person_n himself_o can_v know_v without_o some_o extraordinary_a mean_n that_o he_o now_o have_v and_o therefore_o can_v tell_v how_o to_o apply_v the_o comfort_n to_o himself_o and_o this_o be_v very_o sad_a again_o the_o sincerity_n of_o one_o repentance_n can_v ordinary_o be_v know_v to_o himself_o but_o by_o the_o fruit_n of_o it_o in_o a_o holy_a life_n and_o by_o these_o he_o that_o be_v now_o die_a can_v never_o know_v it_o it_o be_v only_o such_o a_o repentance_n as_o will_v produce_v holiness_n of_o life_n if_o the_o sick_a person_n shall_v recover_v that_o be_v repentance_n to_o salvation_n and_o when_o the_o sinner_n on_o his_o deathbed_n call_v to_o mind_n how_o often_o his_o heart_n have_v in_o this_o point_n deceive_v he_o when_o he_o remember_v how_o his_o love_n to_o sin_n have_v hitherto_o conquer_v all_o such_o purpose_n and_o resolution_n of_o holy_a live_n how_o often_o he_o have_v heretofore_o upon_o the_o same_o or_o some_o other_o occasion_n very_o serious_o as_o he_o think_v resolve_v as_o now_o he_o do_v and_o yet_o never_o keep_v his_o resolution_n how_o shall_v he_o be_v able_a to_o assure_v himself_o that_o he_o will_v keep_v it_o any_o better_a now_o shall_v he_o yet_o live_v i_o hope_v what_o have_v be_v already_o say_v be_v abundant_o enough_o to_o convince_v we_o all_o both_o that_o a_o sinner_n can_v never_o repent_v too_o soon_o and_o that_o he_o may_v drive_v it_o off_o till_o it_o be_v too_o late_o and_o therefore_o see_v repentance_n be_v altogether_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n it_o be_v a_o work_n that_o require_v great_a haste_n and_o admit_v of_o no_o delay_n the_o conclusion_n from_o what_o we_o have_v now_o prove_v it_o may_v be_v too_o easy_a i_o fear_v for_o many_o of_o we_o to_o reflect_v very_o sad_o upon_o ourselves_o it_o be_v certain_o if_o these_o thing_n be_v so_o as_o have_v be_v say_v high_a time_n for_o we_o all_o to_o think_v what_o we_o have_v be_v do_v all_o the_o while_o we_o have_v already_o live_v in_o

before_o the_o judgement_n seat_n of_o christ_n that_o every_o one_o may_v receive_v the_o thing_n do_v in_o his_o body_n according_a to_o that_o he_o have_v do_v whether_o it_o be_v good_a or_o bad_a 2_o cor._n v._o 10._o we_o must_v appear_v that_o be_v certain_a there_o be_v no_o flinch_v or_o evasion_n all_o of_o we_o without_o exception_n and_o there_o will_v god_n render_v to_o every_o man_n according_a to_o his_o deed_n rom._n ii_o 6._o when_o we_o call_v this_o to_o mind_n do_v we_o not_o think_v ourselves_o concern_v to_o inquire_v how_o we_o be_v prepare_v to_o answer_v for_o ourselves_o at_o that_o most_o dreadful_a tribunal_n we_o see_v that_o according_a to_o our_o deed_n or_o behaviour_n in_o the_o body_n or_o whilst_o we_o here_o live_v so_o we_o must_v then_o be_v doom_v to_o receive_v either_o eternal_a reward_n or_o eternal_a punishment_n as_o be_v elsewhere_o plain_a enough_o be_v we_o able_a to_o plead_v for_o ourselves_o that_o we_o have_v live_v a_o life_n of_o repentance_n faith_n and_o new_a obedience_n then_o all_o will_v be_v well_o through_o the_o rich_a mercy_n of_o god_n and_o merit_n of_o our_o bless_a jesus_n eternal_a life_n be_v assure_v unto_o we_o but_o if_o we_o can_v plead_v this_o what_o will_v become_v of_o we_o know_v we_o how_o soon_o we_o must_v die_v or_o how_o we_o must_v die_v as_o we_o die_v so_o must_v we_o have_v quite_o lose_v the_o comfort_n of_o be_v sure_a of_o it_o as_o long_o as_o we_o live_v they_o who_o be_v young_a can_v but_o know_v that_o every_o day_n they_o live_v they_o grow_v old_a what_o any_o day_n add_v to_o the_o time_n past_a so_o much_o it_o take_v from_o the_o time_n to_o come_v and_o the_o more_o they_o have_v live_v the_o less_o they_o have_v to_o live_v and_o they_o be_v always_o ignorant_a whether_o they_o have_v a_o day_n more_o to_o live_v or_o no._n if_o then_o the_o young_a person_n have_v not_o yet_o repent_v it_o be_v high_a time_n for_o he_o too_o now_o to_o begin_v if_o he_o stay_v any_o long_o his_o repentance_n will_v be_v late_o too_o and_o so_o much_o the_o less_o comfortable_a and_o possible_o it_o may_v be_v too_o late_a for_o it_o be_v ten_o to_o one_o he_o shall_v die_v before_o he_o be_v old_a and_o if_o not_o why_o shall_v he_o grudge_v himself_o the_o best_a of_o comfort_n in_o old_a age_n a_o conscience_n that_o can_v testify_v that_o he_o have_v repent_v and_o keep_v god_n commandment_n from_o his_o youth_n up_o till_o then_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o whether_o we_o be_v old_a or_o young_a we_o be_v so_o well_o satisfy_v at_o least_o many_o of_o we_o that_o repentance_n be_v necessary_a to_o salvation_n that_o we_o will_v not_o willing_o die_v without_o it_o and_o we_o can_v not_o be_v so_o easy_a within_o ourselves_o as_o may_v be_v we_o be_v then_o in_o good_a earnest_n and_o serious_o purpose_n to_o perform_v our_o promise_n and_o we_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n upon_o it_o and_o so_o seal_v up_o our_o repentance_n god_n be_v in_o himself_o and_o what_o he_o have_v always_o be_v and_o will_v be_v to_o we_o i_o think_v it_o may_v be_v safe_o conclude_v that_o there_o can_v be_v imagine_v any_o high_a degree_n of_o baseness_n whereof_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o man_n to_o be_v guilty_a than_o this_o amount_n to_o and_o therefore_o nothing_o can_v be_v more_o odious_a and_o provoke_a to_o almighty_a god_n than_o this_o foul_a sin_n of_o delay_v our_o repentance_n sect_n iv._o the_o first_o danger_n of_o delay_v i_o be_o sensible_a how_o hard_o a_o thing_n it_o be_v to_o make_v one_o who_o love_v his_o sin_n to_o see_v the_o baseness_n of_o it_o if_o he_o be_v young_a it_o be_v hard_a to_o bring_v he_o to_o that_o degree_n of_o seriousness_n as_o be_v needful_a to_o such_o a_o thorough_a consideration_n as_o must_v make_v he_o understand_v it_o and_o if_o he_o be_v old_a long_a custom_n have_v harden_v he_o in_o it_o and_o take_v away_o the_o sense_n of_o baseness_n but_o he_o that_o be_v grow_v too_o impudent_a to_o be_v ashamed_a may_v possible_o be_v make_v afraid_a and_o a_o apprehension_n of_o danger_n may_v move_v he_o that_o have_v lose_v the_o sense_n of_o baseness_n let_v we_o therefore_o now_o consider_v the_o great_a danger_n we_o be_v in_o by_o delay_v our_o repentance_n and_o the_o keep_n of_o god_n commandment_n and_o we_o shall_v find_v it_o to_o be_v no_o less_o holiness_n from_o earth_n to_o heaven_n from_o our_o carnal_a self_n to_o god_n but_o only_o a_o change_n of_o our_o security_n into_o fear_n and_o of_o our_o pleasure_n into_o sorrow_n and_o it_o may_v be_v of_o our_o mind_n into_o a_o very_a serious_a resolution_n to_o live_v better_o if_o we_o shall_v live_v any_o long_o and_o that_o mere_o because_o we_o be_v afraid_a that_o we_o shall_v live_v no_o long_o how_o any_o one_o shall_v think_v such_o a_o force_a change_n as_o this_o a_o acceptable_a repentance_n i_o must_v confess_v i_o know_v not_o unless_o he_o have_v forget_v not_o only_o his_o bible_n but_o his_o reason_n too_o there_o be_v some_o thing_n as_o useful_a as_o they_o be_v easy_a to_o be_v observe_v in_o die_a people_n who_o have_v spend_v their_o day_n in_o wickedness_n and_o i_o think_v they_o be_v enough_o to_o affright_v any_o one_o from_o think_v any_o long_o of_o have_v the_o benefit_n of_o a_o deathbed_n repentance_n first_o it_o be_v too_o easy_a to_o observe_v that_o often_o such_o a_o sinner_n conscience_n be_v quite_o dead_a within_o he_o i_o speak_v of_o some_o not_o of_o all_o a_o long_a time_n before_o he_o die_v and_o never_o revive_v future_a state_n when_o they_o be_v about_o to_o die_v that_o though_o they_o be_v desirous_a of_o good_a advice_n and_o send_v for_o the_o minister_n to_o talk_v to_o they_o and_o pray_v for_o they_o and_o confess_v to_o he_o some_o few_o of_o their_o most_o notorious_a fault_n yet_o be_v they_o the_o confident_a person_n in_o the_o world_n of_o their_o pardon_n it_o be_v not_o easy_a to_o persuade_v they_o that_o their_o case_n be_v very_o dangerous_a but_o after_o they_o have_v confess_v they_o be_v great_a sinner_n and_o have_v be_v pray_v for_o as_o though_o all_o be_v do_v they_o pass_v off_o the_o stage_n of_o this_o world_n as_o unconcerned_o as_o if_o they_o have_v never_o act_v any_o ill_a part_n thereon_o three_o it_o have_v be_v very_o often_o observe_v that_o those_o of_o they_o who_o in_o some_o very_a dangerous_a sickness_n have_v make_v more_o ado_n than_o ordinary_a have_v cry_v out_o very_o bitter_o of_o their_o past_a wickedness_n and_o folly_n have_v shed_v one_o so_o late_o but_o we_o be_v not_o sure_o it_o be_v a_o example_n of_o a_o delay_a repentance_n for_o we_o can_v find_v that_o this_o late_a penitent_n ever_o one_o minute_n delay_v his_o repentance_n after_o he_o be_v call_v to_o it_o and_o convince_v that_o it_o be_v his_o duty_n and_o indeed_o see_v this_o man_n case_n be_v very_o extraordinary_a he_o that_o will_v encourage_v
