dispute_n much_o about_o purgatory_n let_v he_o only_o ask_v a_o popish_a priest_n how_o the_o doctrine_n of_o purgatory_n can_v be_v reconcile_v with_o that_o stupendous_a love_n of_o god_n declare_v to_o penitent_a sinner_n in_o his_o son_n jesus_n christ_n for_o it_o be_v a_o contradiction_n to_o the_o notion_n of_o goodness_n among_o man_n to_o inflict_v such_o terrible_a punishment_n in_o mere_a grace_n and_o love_n even_o when_o the_o sin_n be_v pardon_v and_o the_o sinner_n reconcile_v and_o no_o long_o in_o a_o state_n of_o discipline_n and_o trial_n this_o be_v the_o force_n of_o the_o argument_n and_o here_o the_o jesuit_n if_o he_o like_v it_o may_v try_v his_o skill_n second_o another_o argument_n i_o urge_v against_o purgatory_n be_v this_o that_o it_o destroy_v or_o weaken_v that_o security_n the_o gospel_n have_v give_v sinner_n of_o their_o redemption_n from_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o the_o just_a punishment_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o that_o upon_o two_o unless_o man_n sin_n after_o baptism_n they_o be_v neither_o in_o danger_n of_o hell_n nor_o purgatory_n and_o yet_o it_o be_v evident_a they_o deny_v that_o christ_n have_v expiate_v the_o temporal_a punishment_n due_a to_o sin_n either_o in_o this_o world_n or_o in_o purgatory_n for_o if_o he_o have_v there_o be_v a_o end_n both_o of_o the_o popish_a sacrament_n of_o penance_n and_o purgatory_n and_o if_o christ_n by_o his_o death_n have_v expiate_v the_o temporal_a punishment_n of_o sin_n i_o will_v desire_v to_o know_v why_o the_o temporal_a punishment_n of_o sin_n be_v not_o as_o well_o a_o mere_a fallacy_n for_o though_o a_o sinner_n in_o baptism_n be_v deliver_v from_o all_o punishment_n due_a to_o sin_n yet_o he_o be_v not_o in_o a_o proper_a sense_n deliver_v from_o what_o they_o call_v the_o temporal_a punishment_n of_o sin_n for_o there_o be_v no_o such_o punishment_n due_a to_o sin_n before_o baptism_n hell_n not_o purgatory_n be_v the_o punishment_n of_o all_o sin_n before_o baptism_n and_o therefore_o a_o baptize_v person_n be_v deliver_v by_o christ_n from_o hell_n which_o be_v the_o only_a punishment_n due_a to_o sin_n before_o baptism_n and_o if_o he_o die_v before_o he_o commit_v any_o actual_a sin_n after_o baptism_n he_o escape_v purgatory_n and_o go_v immediate_o to_o heaven_n not_o because_o christ_n death_n have_v deliver_v he_o from_o the_o temporal_a pain_n of_o purgatory_n but_o because_o he_o have_v do_v nothing_o to_o deserve_v it_o for_o what_o they_o call_v the_o temporal_a punishment_n of_o sin_n be_v only_o the_o pain_n of_o penance_n and_o no_o man_n be_v capable_a of_o the_o sacrament_n of_o penance_n who_o be_v not_o a_o baptize_v christian_n and_o yet_o purgatory_n be_v of_o the_o same_o nature_n with_o the_o pain_n of_o penance_n for_o there_o man_n complete_a the_o expiation_n of_o their_o sin_n by_o endure_v the_o pain_n of_o purgatory_n which_o be_v want_v to_o perfect_v their_o penance_n in_o this_o world._n and_o therefore_o baptism_n do_v not_o remit_v the_o temporal_a punishment_n of_o sin_n because_o there_o be_v none_o due_a till_o man_n sin_n after_o baptism_n it_o can_v no_o more_o remit_v the_o temporal_a pain_n of_o purgatory_n than_o the_o temporal_a pain_n of_o penance_n which_o none_o but_o a_o baptize_v sinner_n be_v obnoxious_a to_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v false_a according_a to_o their_o doctrine_n to_o say_v that_o christ_n obtain_v remission_n from_o all_o temporal_a as_o well_o as_o eternal_a pain_n unless_o they_o will_v say_v that_o christ_n obtain_v remission_n of_o the_o pain_n of_o penance_n and_o then_o farewell_n penance_n and_o purgatory_n together_o and_o this_o very_a bottom_n our_o jesuit_n set_v it_o on_o p._n 75._o where_o he_o tell_v we_o those_o who_o take_v away_o the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n i_o desire_v one_o text_n to_o prove_v that_o a_o sinner_n who_o be_v pardon_v and_o justify_v shall_v not_o be_v eternal_o punish_v for_o sin_n and_o if_o wit_n as_o to_o say_v nothing_o to_o it_o i_o ask_v far_o whether_o there_o be_v two_o kind_n of_o punishment_n due_a to_o sin_n temporal_a and_o eternal_a of_o such_o a_o distinct_a nature_n that_o the_o promise_n of_o forgiveness_n do_v not_o include_v both_o nay_o that_o god_n can_v forgive_v both_o that_o god_n can_v only_o forgive_v eternal_a punishment_n but_o the_o sinner_n himself_o must_v endure_v the_o temporal_a if_o this_o be_v the_o case_n i_o will_v grant_v the_o promise_n of_o forgiveness_n can_v extend_v only_o to_o eternal_a punishment_n but_o if_o the_o curse_n of_o include_v the_o forgiveness_n of_o temporal_a punishment_n as_o part_n or_o branch_n of_o it_o and_o this_o i_o show_v be_v the_o case_n here_o that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o threaten_v in_o all_o the_o gospel_n against_o sin_n but_o eternal_a death_n and_o therefore_o all_o other_o punishment_n be_v inflict_v by_o virtue_n of_o this_o law_n as_o include_v in_o it_o and_o consequent_o he_o follow_a harangue_n indeed_o for_o purgatory_n he_o endeavour_v to_o prove_v by_o some_o example_n of_o god_n punish_v those_o who_o sin_n be_v forgive_v and_o
by_o some_o say_n of_o the_o father_n that_o after_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n be_v forgive_v there_o remain_v a_o obligation_n to_o undergo_v punishment_n but_o these_o have_v be_v answer_v often_o interior_a invisible_a grace_n i_o will_v confess_v then_o that_o there_o have_v be_v no_o need_n have_v christ_n so_o please_v of_o any_o visible_a sacrament_n he_o add_v upon_o whatever_o account_n that_o interior_a covenant_n but_o we_o speak_v of_o a_o external_a visible_a covenant_n which_o require_v visible_a pledge_n and_o seal_n require_v a_o visible_a sensible_a mark_n and_o our_o actual_a communion_n with_o christ_n another_o all_o the_o communication_n of_o god_n grace_n to_o we_o all_o our_o return_n of_o worship_n and_o adoration_n will_v equal_o admit_v of_o sensible_a sign_n and_o rite_n let_v we_o apply_v this_o then_o to_o those_o instance_n i_o give_v of_o this_o external_a worship_n and_o see_v whether_o there_o be_v the_o same_o reason_n for_o that_o as_o there_o be_v for_o some_o visible_a sign_n of_o a_o visible_a covenant_n the_o same_o reason_n and_o necessity_n for_o instance_n of_o some_o external_a rite_n to_o expiate_v sin_n now_o the_o gospel_n declare_v there_o be_v no_o expiation_n of_o sin_n but_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n that_o there_o be_v of_o gospel-sacrament_n to_o apply_v the_o expiation_n of_o christ_n death_n to_o we_o the_o same_o necessity_n of_o external_a wash_n and_o purification_n distinction_n of_o meat_n etc._n etc._n now_o the_o gospel_n have_v put_v a_o end_n to_o all_o legal_a uncleanness_n as_o there_o be_v of_o baptism_n to_o wash_v away_o our_o sin_n or_o of_o the_o lord_n supper_n to_o strengthen_v and_o refresh_v our_o soul_n by_o a_o spiritual_a feed_n on_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n the_o same_o external_a holiness_n of_o place_n to_o sanctify_v our_o worship_n now_o god_n have_v declare_v that_o he_o have_v no_o symbolical_a presence_n on_o earth_n the_o same_o necessity_n of_o material_a and_o inanimate_a receptacle_n and_o conveyance_n of_o divine_a grace_n and_o virtue_n the_o same_o necessity_n of_o a_o external_a and_o ceremonial_a righteousness_n which_o be_v such_o a_o contradiction_n to_o the_o whole_a design_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o there_o be_v of_o the_o gospel-sacrament_n to_o receive_v we_o into_o covenant_n and_o to_o convey_v the_o blessing_n of_o the_o covenant_n to_o we_o as_o for_o external_a act_n and_o circumstance_n of_o worship_n and_o adoration_n i_o allow_v the_o necessity_n of_o they_o under_o the_o gospel_n but_o these_o be_v very_o different_a thing_n from_o external_a religious_a rite_n and_o if_o he_o know_v no_o reason_n why_o the_o conveyance_n of_o grace_n shall_v rather_o be_v confine_v to_o the_o two_o gospel-sacrament_n then_o to_o holy_a water_n or_o agnus_n dei_n or_o the_o relic_n of_o saint_n or_o such_o other_o popish_a invention_n i_o will_v tell_v he_o one_o because_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n be_v the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n and_o derive_v his_o influence_n only_o to_o the_o mystical_a body_n of_o christ_n all_o our_o grace_n be_v the_o immediate_a influx_n of_o the_o divine_a spirit_n and_o nothing_o can_v entitle_v we_o to_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n but_o be_v member_n of_o christ_n body_n and_o there_o be_v no_o visible_a sacrament_n of_o union_n to_o christ_n but_o baptism_n and_o the_o lord_n supper_n and_o therefore_o no_o visible_a rite_n of_o convey_v the_o grace_n of_o the_o divine_a spirit_n to_o we_o but_o these_o again_o as_o our_o spiritual_a life_n consist_v in_o our_o union_n to_o christ_n so_o this_o union_n make_v we_o new_a creature_n for_o he_o that_o be_v in_o christ_n be_v a_o new_a creature_n now_o there_o be_v but_o two_o thing_n necessary_a to_o a_o new_a creature_n a_o new_a birth_n and_o a_o constant_a supply_n of_o nourishment_n for_o its_o increase_n and_o growth_n baptism_n be_v our_o regeneration_n or_o new_a birth_n whereby_o we_o be_v incorporate_v into_o christ_n mystical_a body_n and_o receive_v the_o first_o communication_n of_o a_o divine_a life_n from_o the_o holy_a spirit_n the_o lord_n supper_n be_v the_o constant_a food_n and_o nourishment_n of_o our_o soul_n wherein_o we_o receive_v fresh_a supply_n of_o grace_n as_o our_o natural_a body_n do_v new_a spirit_n from_o the_o meat_n we_o eat_v now_o let_v any_o man_n tell_v i_o what_o more_o be_v necessary_a to_o a_o new_a creature_n than_o to_o be_v bear_v and_o to_o be_v nourish_v by_o fresh_a supply_n of_o grace_n till_o it_o grow_v up_o to_o a_o perfect_a man_n in_o christ_n jesus_n all_o this_o be_v do_v for_o we_o by_o baptism_n and_o the_o lord_n supper_n and_o if_o all_o divine_a grace_n must_v be_v derive_v to_o we_o from_o our_o union_n to_o christ_n as_o the_o member_n of_o his_o body_n nothing_o can_v be_v more_o congruous_a than_o that_o the_o sacrament_n of_o our_o union_n to_o christ_n shall_v be_v the_o only_a visible_a and_o external_a rite_n of_o convey_v all_o supernatural_a grace_n to_o we_o so_o that_o unless_o holy_a water_n and_o relic_n etc._n etc._n be_v new_a sacrament_n of_o our_o union_n to_o christ_n they_o can_v be_v no_o gospel_n conveyance_n of_o grace_n and_o by_o the_o way_n whoever_o well_o consider_v this_o will_v think_v it_o little_o less_o than_o a_o demonstration_n that_o there_o can_v be_v but_o two_o gospel_n sacrament_n because_o there_o be_v no_o other_o visible_a rite_n of_o unite_n we_o to_o christ_n and_o consequent_o of_o convey_v supernatural_a grace_n to_o we_o which_o be_v the_o notion_n of_o a_o sacrament_n but_o to_o proceed_v i_o come_v to_o apply_v this_o discourse_n to_o popish_a worship_n to_o see_v how_o consistent_a it_o be_v with_o that_o reformation_n christ_n have_v make_v of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n under_o the_o gospel_n and_o i_o observe_v in_o general_a that_o whoever_o only_o consider_v the_o vast_a number_n of_o rite_n and_o ceremony_n in_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n must_v conclude_v it_o as_o ritual_a and_o ceremonial_a a_o religion_n as_o judaisme_n itself_o the_o ceremony_n be_v as_o many_o more_o obscure_a unintelligible_a and_o useless_a more_o severe_a and_o intolerable_a than_o the_o jewish_a yoke_n itself_o which_o st._n peter_n tell_v the_o jew_n neither_o they_o nor_o their_o father_n be_v able_a to_o bear_v the_o first_o part_n he_o have_v nothing_o to_o say_v to_o and_o by_o his_o silence_n confess_v it_o to_o be_v true_a and_o that_o be_v proof_n enough_o that_o it_o be_v no_o christian_a worship_n but_o he_o will_v by_o no_o mean_n allow_v that_o they_o be_v as_o severe_a and_o as_o intolerable_a as_o the_o jewish_a yoke_n 80._o this_o he_o call_v a_o misrepresentation_n and_o look_v about_o to_o see_v what_o it_o shall_v be_v that_o be_v so_o intolerable_a he_o suspect_v i_o mean_v their_o fast_n in_o lent_n or_o on_o friday_n and_o saturday_n but_o he_o be_v much_o mistake_v i_o know_v all_o these_o be_v very_o easy_a and_o gentle_a thing_n in_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n or_o that_o prayer_n and_o almsdeed_n may_v be_v these_o terrible_a thing_n and_o here_o he_o come_v pretty_a near_o the_o matter_n for_o i_o look_v upon_o it_o very_o intolerable_a to_o say_v over_o so_o many_o prayer_n and_o mass_n every_o day_n without_o understanding_n one_o word_n they_o say_v which_o be_v the_o daily_a task_n of_o many_o thousand_o priest_n who_o understand_v no_o more_o what_o they_o say_v than_o the_o people_n do_v to_o part_v with_o their_o real_a estate_n many_o time_n to_o the_o great_a damage_n of_o their_o family_n out_o of_o a_o blind_a devotion_n to_o deliver_v their_o soul_n from_o the_o imaginary_a flame_n of_o purgatory_n which_o they_o call_v almsdeed_n to_o whip_v and_o macerate_v their_o body_n if_o they_o be_v so_o blind_o devout_a with_o severe_a fast_n for_o man_n may_v fast_o severe_o in_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n if_o they_o please_v with_o long_a watch_n hard_a lodging_n tedious_a and_o expensive_a pilgrimage_n not_o to_o cure_v but_o to_o expiate_v their_o sin_n he_o say_v if_o the_o ceremony_n use_v in_o the_o liturgy_n he_o shall_v have_v say_v in_o their_o mass-book_n and_o ritual_n and_o breviaries_n be_v a_o burden_n sure_o the_o clergy_n or_o religious_a must_v feel_v the_o weight_n of_o it_o yet_o i_o be_o sure_a not_o one_o ever_o own_v it_o be_v he_o sure_a of_o this_o have_v he_o confess_v all_o the_o nun_n and_o monk_n but_o if_o they_o have_v not_o own_v it_o have_v they_o never_o feel_v it_o neither_o will_v
