suppress_v and_o hinder_v it_o that_o his_o kingdom_n may_v not_o be_v know_v 36._o but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o noble_a twig_n defend_v itself_o and_o will_v none_o of_o the_o fierce_a god_n which_o be_v tender_v unto_o it_o out_o of_o pure_a love_n but_o seek_v itself_o and_o its_o own_o love_n of_o transitory_a thing_n and_o love_v itself_o and_o the_o thing_n being_n of_o this_o world_n more_o than_o god_n 4._o therefore_o man_v own_o nature_n which_o in_o its_o own_o centre_n without_o the_o love_n of_o god_n stand_v in_o mere_a anguish_n strife_n enmity_n and_o unquiet_a contrariety_n tempt_v he_o into_o which_o also_o the_o devil_n snoot_v his_o false_a desire_n to_o lead_v man_n
astray_o from_o such_o high_a grace_n and_o love_n of_o god_n 5._o this_o temptation_n be_v the_o great_a and_o it_o be_v even_o the_o combat_n which_o christ_n maintain_v with_o his_o love_n shed_v forth_o into_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n against_o such_o selfenesse_n also_o against_o god_n anger_n sin_n death_n devil_n and_o hell_n in_o which_o combat_n the_o (null)_o dragon_n must_v be_v devout_v by_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n and_o change_v into_o a_o angelical_a image_n 6._o and_o if_o the_o love_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n have_v not_o its_o influence_n in_o you_o ☞_o you_o shall_v have_v none_o of_o this_o combat_n but_o the_o dragon_n viz._n the_o false_a devilish_a will_n will_v maintain_v his_o natural_a right_n and_o possession_n without_o any_o such_o conflict_n or_o disturbance_n 7._o now_o therefore_o this_o perplex_v and_o distress_v temptation_n be_v wrought_v very_o sensible_o in_o nature_n by_o the_o dragon_n who_o be_v in_o travel_a anguish_n with_o his_o own_o nature_n when_o such_o great_a love_n of_o god_n come_v into_o he_o and_o will_v change_v his_o natural_a right_n into_o a_o divine_a self_n deny_v will_n 8._o for_o here_o christ_n the_o serpent-stroy_a stand_v in_o man_n in_o hell_n and_o storm_v or_o assault_v the_o strong_a prey-fort_n of_o the_o devil_n whence_o arise_v such_o strife_n where_o christ_n and_o lucifer_n fight_v for_o the_o soul_n as_o god_n have_v give_v you_o to_o see_v and_o know_v experimental_o in_o the_o first_o temptation_n 9_o thus_o christ_n bruise_v the_o head_n of_o the_o serpent_n and_o the_o serpent_n sting_v christ_n in_o the_o heel_n ☞_o and_o the_o poor_a soul_n stand_v in_o the_o midst_n in_o great_a tremble_a and_o sadness_n and_o can_v do_v nothing_o but_o only_o stand_v still_o in_o hope_n it_o be_v not_o able_a also_o to_o lift_v up_o its_o face_n before_o god_n and_o pour_v forth_o its_o effectual_a prayer_n for_o the_o dragon_n turn_v its_o face_n towards_o the_o vanity_n of_o this_o world_n and_o show_v it_o the_o beauty_n and_o glory_n of_o this_o world_n and_o mock_v it_o because_o it_o will_v become_v another_o creature_n and_o represent_v unto_o it_o the_o kingdom_n in_o which_o it_o live_v and_o its_o natural_a ground_n 10._o and_o here_o the_o soul_n stand_v with_o christ_n in_o the_o wilderness_n in_o the_o fâ—â—ty_a day_n temptation_n where_o the_o might_n glory_n riches_n and_o pleasure_n of_o this_o world_n be_v tender_v unto_o it_o allure_a it_o to_o elevate_v itself_o and_o enter_v into_o its_o own_o self_n will_n 11._o the_o second_o temptation_n of_o lucifer_n and_o the_o selfish_a dragon_n of_o nature_n ☞_o be_v this_o that_o when_o the_o soul_n have_v taste_v the_o divine_a love_n and_o have_v be_v once_o illuminate_v than_o the_o soul_n will_v have_v that_o same_o light_n for_o its_o own_o propriety_n ☞_o and_o work_v therein_o in_o its_o own_o power_n and_o ability_n as_o in_o its_o own_o peculiar_a possession_n understand_v the_o nature_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v without_o god_n light_n be_v a_o dragon_n as_o lucifer_n that_o i_o say_v will_v have_v it_o for_o its_o own_o propriety_n but_o this_o dragon_n will_v not_o resign_v up_o his_o natural_a right_n he_o will_v be_v a_o maker_n and_o disposer_n of_o the_o divine_a power_n and_o live_v therein_o in_o great_a joy_n in_o his_o fiery_a selfish_a nature_n and_o this_o can_v be_v 12._o this_o dragon_n viz._n the_o fiery_a nature_n must_v be_v change_v with_o its_o own_o will_n into_o a_o love-â—â—re_a and_o forgo_v his_o natural_a right_n but_o he_o be_v unwilling_a to_o do_v it_o but_o he_o in_o such_o a_o charge_n or_o transmutation_n look_v for_o a_o own_o self_n power_n and_o yet_o find_v none_o and_o therefore_o he_o begin_v to_o doubt_v of_o grace_n because_o he_o see_v that_o in_o such_o work_n he_o must_v forsake_v his_o natural_a desire_n and_o will_n and_o hence_o he_o continual_o be_v afraid_a and_o will_v not_o die_v in_o the_o divine_a light_n from_o his_o own_o natural_a right_n but_o always_o think_v that_o the_o light_n of_o grace_n which_o work_v without_o such_o sharpness_n and_o fiery_a might_n be_v a_o false_a light_n 13._o whence_o it_o come_v ☞_o that_o the_o outward_a reason_n which_o however_o be_v blind_a and_o see_v nothing_o aright_o of_o itself_o continual_o think_v o_o who_o know_v how_o it_o be_v with_o thou_o whether_o it_o be_v true_a or_o no_o that_o god_n have_v illuminate_v thou_o that_o he_o be_v in_o thou_o i_o may_v likely_o proceed_v from_o such_o a_o fancy_n thou_o
