say_v even_o in_o this_o incredulous_a and_o unbelieving_a age_n i_o be_o nevertheless_o very_o persuade_v that_o for_o one_o man_n that_o be_v ruin_v by_o infidelity_n many_o hundred_o be_v ruin_v by_o thoughtlesness_n and_o inconsideration_n that_o where_o there_o be_v one_o that_o be_v wicked_a because_o he_o believe_v nothing_o of_o the_o gospel-motive_n nor_o that_o there_o be_v any_o such_o place_n or_o state_n as_o heaven_n or_o hell_n there_o be_v a_o great_a many_o that_o do_v believe_v these_o thing_n and_o yet_o continue_v in_o their_o wicked_a course_n because_o they_o never_o take_v any_o time_n serious_o to_o consider_v what_o heaven_n and_o hell_n be_v and_o that_o vast_a that_o infinite_a difference_n that_o there_o be_v between_o these_o two_o state_n and_o how_o much_o it_o behoove_v they_o to_o use_v all_o diligence_n to_o attain_v that_o and_o to_o avoid_v this_o leave_v therefore_o those_o who_o believe_v little_a or_o nothing_o of_o these_o thing_n to_o my_o follow_a discourse_n wherein_o i_o hope_v to_o prove_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n revelation_n beyond_o all_o reasonable_a exception_n i_o shall_v now_o address_v myself_o to_o you_o that_o do_v believe_v these_o thing_n and_o who_o every_o time_n you_o meet_v together_o in_o the_o church_n do_v repeat_v all_o the_o article_n of_o the_o christian_a faith_n and_o declare_v your_o either_o have_v no_o sense_n or_o feel_v of_o any_o thing_n when_o therefore_o in_o repeat_v the_o creed_n we_o declare_v that_o we_o believe_v we_o shall_v live_v again_o after_o our_o death_n the_o meaning_n be_v that_o we_o shall_v be_v hereafter_o in_o such_o a_o state_n of_o sensation_n as_o we_o be_v in_o now_o that_o in_o that_o life_n we_o shall_v be_v as_o sensible_a of_o pain_n or_o pleasure_n as_o we_o be_v in_o this_o life_n but_o then_o what_o make_v the_o great_a difference_n between_o this_o life_n and_o that_o be_v that_o this_o be_v short_a transient_a and_o momentary_a that_o if_o it_o be_v pleasant_a it_o be_v soon_o over_o and_o that_o if_o it_o be_v painful_a it_o will_v not_o last_v long_o whereas_o that_o such_o as_o it_o be_v once_o such_o it_o will_v ever_o be_v for_o that_o be_v the_o mean_v of_o a_o life_n everlasting_a it_o be_v a_o life_n that_o will_v never_o be_v end_v a_o life_n that_o will_v continue_v to_o all_o eternity_n and_o now_o that_o we_o come_v to_o speak_v of_o eternity_n though_o the_o word_n have_v a_o fix_a mean_v yet_o how_o be_v our_o thought_n lose_v and_o bewilder_v when_o we_o set_v ourselves_o to_o meditate_v thereupon_o when_o we_o speak_v of_o a_o thousand_o or_o ten_o thousand_o or_o even_o of_o a_o million_o of_o year_n we_o have_v some_o notion_n of_o what_o we_o say_v but_o when_o we_o come_v to_o multiply_v these_o thousand_o and_o million_o by_o ten_o thousand_o or_o ten_o million_o or_o by_o million_o of_o million_o our_o thought_n be_v not_o capacious_a enough_o to_o conceive_v and_o our_o mouth_n want_v word_n to_o express_v that_o infinite_a length_n of_o time_n which_o these_o number_n do_v comprehend_v and_o yet_o all_o that_o these_o number_n denote_v be_v nothing_o in_o comparison_n with_o eternity_n if_o the_o whole_a sea_n be_v to_o run_v out_o drop_v by_o drop_n what_o a_o prodigious_a length_n of_o time_n will_v this_o take_v up_o and_o yet_o in_o time_n this_o will_v be_v do_v and_o they_o that_o live_v for_o ever_o will_v live_v to_o see_v the_o vast_a cavern_n of_o the_o ocean_n without_o one_o drop_n of_o water_n leave_v in_o they_o and_o which_o be_v more_o yet_o there_o will_v be_v no_o part_n of_o their_o eternity_n then_o spend_v they_o will_v then_o be_v as_o far_o from_o die_v as_o they_o be_v at_o first_o or_o if_o only_o once_o in_o ten_o such_o a_o life_n after_o this_o short_a life_n be_v over_o do_v it_o not_o high_o behoove_v we_o to_o think_v of_o it_o now_o and_o to_o make_v the_o best_a provision_n that_o be_v possible_a that_o we_o may_v be_v happy_a in_o it_o and_o this_o lead_v i_o to_o the_o other_o branch_n of_o meditation_n on_o this_o subject_a which_o we_o ought_v likewise_o frequent_o and_o serious_o to_o dwell_v upon_o in_o our_o mind_n namely_o of_o what_o sort_v and_o kind_a this_o eternal_a life_n will_v be_v and_o as_o it_o be_v life_n it_o be_v as_o be_v say_v before_o a_o state_n of_o sensation_n and_o as_o it_o be_v a_o everlasting_a life_n it_o be_v a_o state_n in_o which_o we_o shall_v for_o ever_o feel_v ourselves_o either_o in_o pain_n or_o at_o ease_n and_o if_o there_o be_v no_o more_o in_o slander_n or_o to_o tell_v a_o lie_n of_o a_o man_n it_o be_v evident_o a_o sin_n of_o a_o more_o heinous_a nature_n to_o report_v a_o untruth_n concern_v god_n and_o to_o utter_v a_o falsehood_n in_o the_o name_n of_o god_n and_o if_o to_o lead_v man_n into_o any_o mistake_n by_o a_o false_a relation_n be_v a_o practice_n not_o to_o be_v justify_v although_o the_o mistake_v they_o be_v lead_v into_o be_v of_o no_o hurtful_a consequence_n either_o to_o themselves_o or_o to_o the_o world_n it_o be_v evident_o a_o great_a aggravation_n of_o the_o lie_n if_o man_n be_v thereby_o deceive_v in_o a_o case_n of_o the_o near_a and_o dear_a concern_v to_o they_o if_o they_o be_v lead_v thereby_o into_o a_o error_n that_o may_v prove_v fatal_a to_o they_o to_o all_o eternity_n and_o last_o if_o it_o be_v a_o very_a great_a sin_n only_o once_o to_o speak_v a_o untruth_n that_o may_v be_v prejudicial_a to_o one_o man_n it_o be_v plain_o the_o great_a and_o the_o most_o unpardonable_a sin_n of_o this_o kind_a to_o record_v a_o untruth_n with_o a_o design_n thereby_o to_o deceive_v to_o their_o everlasting_a destruction_n all_o the_o man_n that_o shall_v ever_o be_v bear_v into_o the_o world_n in_o all_o future_a age_n if_o therefore_o the_o gospel_n history_n be_v false_a there_o be_v manifest_o such_o a_o complication_n of_o most_o horrid_a wickedness_n in_o the_o publisher_n and_o compiler_n of_o it_o as_o it_o be_v not_o fair_a to_o suppose_v even_o one_o single_a man_n will_v be_v guilty_a of_o and_o much_o less_o can_v it_o be_v reasonable_o suppose_v that_o several_a man_n viz._n not_o only_o the_o four_o evangelist_n but_o all_o the_o other_o apostle_n who_o preach_v the_o same_o thing_n that_o they_o write_v do_v consent_n to_o the_o report_n of_o so_o many_o and_o such_o notorious_a and_o hurtful_a untruth_n but_o this_o it_o may_v be_v it_o will_v be_v say_v be_v not_o a_o direct_a proof_n that_o the_o evangelist_n be_v true_a and_o faithful_a in_o their_o relation_n but_o only_o a_o probable_a ground_n of_o presume_v that_o they_o be_v so_o and_o i_o grant_v it_o be_v no_o more_o but_o nevertheless_o i_o think_v if_o nothing_o more_o can_v be_v offer_v this_o alone_a will_v be_v sufficient_a to_o render_v their_o testimony_n high_o credible_a so_o long_o as_o nothing_o be_v allege_v on_o the_o other_o side_n to_o disprove_v it_o and_o in_o all_o other_o case_n we_o allow_v it_o to_o be_v so_o for_o by_o the_o testimony_n of_o person_n of_o who_o truth_n we_o have_v no_o other_o assurance_n but_o such_o a_o probable_a presumption_n all_o themselves_o a_o liberty_n of_o vary_v from_o the_o truth_n in_o any_o particular_a it_o can_v be_v imagine_v but_o that_o they_o will_v at_o least_o have_v conceal_v their_o own_o frailty_n and_o infirmity_n it_o can_v be_v suppose_v they_o will_v have_v furnish_v their_o adversary_n with_o matter_n wherewith_o to_o reproach_v they_o but_o it_o be_v possible_a that_o a_o historian_n who_o mean_v to_o deceive_v his_o reader_n in_o some_o matter_n of_o great_a moment_n may_v purposely_o insert_v some_o few_o such_o passage_n as_o these_o thereby_o to_o gain_v himself_o a_o easy_a by_o these_o glorious_a pretence_n though_o in_o the_o event_n it_o prove_v otherwise_o but_o the_o gospel-history_n furnish_v we_o with_o a_o very_a clear_a and_o full_a answer_n to_o this_o objection_n in_o those_o many_o prediction_n of_o our_o lord_n therein_o record_v concern_v his_o own_o suffering_n 16.31.20.17_o mat._n 16.31.20.17_o whereby_o it_o clear_o appear_v that_o the_o suffering_n which_o befall_v he_o for_o give_v this_o testimony_n concern_v himself_o do_v not_o happen_v to_o he_o unexpected_o but_o that_o he_o know_v long_o before_o all_o that_o afterward_o come_v to_o pass_v and_o therefore_o i_o say_v again_o that_o no_o reason_n can_v be_v imagine_v why_o he_o shall_v say_v that_o he_o be_v send_v from_o god_n but_o only_o because_o he_o know_v it_o continue_v to_o testify_v the_o same_o at_o his_o death_n which_o he_o have_v do_v before_o in_o his_o life_n give_v thereby_o the_o best_a assurance_n that_o a_o man_n can_v give_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o his_o testimony_n for_o the_o main_a matter_n of_o his_o accusation_n to_o pilate_n be_v that_o he_o have_v give_v out_o himself_o to_o be_v the_o messiah_n and_o the_o messiah_n be_v according_a to_o the_o expectation_n of_o the_o jew_n to_o be_v a_o great_a temporal_a king_n have_v our_o lord_n therefore_o but_o deny_v this_o charge_n have_v he_o but_o grant_v that_o he_o be_v not_o the_o messiah_n he_o may_v have_v save_v his_o life_n but_o this_o he_o will_v not_o do_v he_o disown_v indeed_o the_o false_a notion_n that_o the_o jew_n have_v of_o the_o messiah_n my_o kingdom_n 62._o john_n 18.26_o mat._n 27.11_o joh._n 18.37_o mat._n 26.63_o 64._o mar._n 14.61_o 62._o say_v he_o be_v not_o of_o this_o world_n but_o that_o he_o be_v a_o king_n and_o that_o he_o be_v the_o christ_n the_o son_n of_o god_n although_o we_o have_v only_o his_o own_o word_n for_o it_o but_o we_o have_v more_o than_o his_o own_o word_n for_o it_o i_o be_o not_o alone_a say_v he_o joh._n viij_o 16_o etc._n etc._n but_o i_o and_o the_o father_n that_o send_v i_o it_o be_v also_o write_v in_o your_o law_n that_o the_o testimony_n of_o two_o man_n be_v true_a i_o be_o one_o that_o bear_v be_v offer_v but_o what_o be_v liable_a to_o cavil_n and_o unreasonable_a exception_n 3._o that_o if_o god_n shall_v gratify_v all_o man_n in_o this_o request_n the_o abundance_n and_o commonness_n of_o the_o miracle_n that_o must_v then_o be_v wrought_v will_v go_v near_o to_o destroy_v the_o efficacy_n and_o persuasiveness_n thereof_o and_o last_o that_o it_o be_v matter_n of_o fact_n and_o to_o preach_v to_o we_o if_o lazarus_n be_v send_v on_o purpose_n to_o persuade_v we_o what_o can_v he_o offer_v more_o towards_o it_o can_v he_o give_v we_o assurance_n of_o any_o thing_n better_o or_o more_o desirable_a than_o of_o god_n readiness_n to_o forgive_v we_o upon_o our_o repentance_n and_o of_o complete_a and_o perfect_a happiness_n both_o of_o body_n and_o soul_n to_o all_o eternity_n if_o we_o do_v repent_v or_o can_v he_o threaten_v any_o thing_n more_o like_a to_o deter_v we_o from_o sin_n than_o intolerable_a and_o everlasting_a misery_n if_o not_o to_o what_o threaten_v clear_o enough_o in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n life_n and_o immortality_n be_v already_o full_o bring_v to_o light_n by_o the_o gospel_n and_o if_o the_o hope_n of_o eternal_a life_n and_o happiness_n and_o if_o the_o dread_a of_o everlasting_a and_o intolerable_a torment_n will_v not_o persuade_v we_o nothing_o certain_o will_n or_o can_v persuade_v we_o all_o that_o i_o think_v can_v in_o any_o new_a revelation_n be_v add_v to_o that_o encouragement_n that_o be_v already_o give_v we_o in_o scripture_n to_o virtue_n and_o godliness_n or_o to_o that_o discouragement_n that_o be_v therein_o give_v as_o to_o vice_n and_o wickedness_n will_v be_v a_o assurance_n that_o there_o shall_v be_v always_o as_o remarkable_a a_o difference_n make_v by_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n between_o good_a and_o bad_a man_n in_o this_o world_n as_o we_o be_v tell_v in_o scripture_n there_o will_v be_v by_o his_o righteous_a judgement_n in_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v and_o a_o good_a assurance_n give_v we_o of_o this_o by_o some_o new_a revelation_n confirm_v by_o our_o own_o constant_a observation_n that_o it_o be_v always_o well_o with_o the_o righteous_a and_o ill_a with_o the_o wicked_a in_o this_o world_n we_o may_v think_v perhaps_o will_v do_v much_o more_o towards_o the_o reformation_n of_o mankind_n than_o only_o those_o promise_n and_o threaten_n of_o future_a happiness_n or_o misery_n that_o we_o meet_v with_o in_o the_o scripture_n have_v do_v or_o be_v ever_o like_a to_o do_v and_o this_o indeed_o may_v be_v but_o then_o it_o be_v to_o be_v consider_v that_o a_o new_a revelation_n to_o this_o effect_n will_v be_v inconsistent_a with_o the_o nature_n of_o religion_n and_o will_v frustrate_v the_o design_n of_o god_n in_o send_v we_o into_o this_o world_n which_o be_v to_o prove_v and_o try_v we_o to_o see_v whether_o we_o love_v the_o lord_n with_o all_o our_o heart_n whether_o we_o can_v believe_v he_o for_o those_o thing_n which_o we_o do_v not_o see_v and_o whether_o we_o be_v so_o wise_a as_o to_o prefer_v a_o great_a future_a good_n before_o a_o less_o that_o be_v present_a a_o bless_a and_o glorious_a immortality_n after_o this_o life_n before_o the_o pleasure_n of_o sin_n which_o be_v but_o for_o a_o season_n for_o if_o the_o reward_n of_o virtue_n and_o the_o punishment_n of_o vice_n be_v always_o visible_a and_o present_a there_o will_v be_v no_o room_n leave_v for_o faith_n in_o god_n which_o be_v a_o firm_a belief_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o his_o promise_n and_o threaten_n though_o we_o do_v not_o be_v the_o certain_a and_o never-failing_a consequence_n of_o sin_n there_o will_v be_v no_o room_n leave_v for_o a_o virtuous_a and_o wise_a choice_n nay_o indeed_o there_o will_v be_v hardly_o matter_n for_o choice_n at_o all_o for_o it_o can_v be_v conceive_v that_o a_o creature_n that_o have_v understanding_n and_o a_o power_n of_o choose_v and_o refuse_v shall_v know_o choose_v all_o misery_n rather_o than_o all_o happiness_n such_o a_o revelation_n as_o this_o be_v therefore_o so_o evident_o inconsistent_a with_o the_o nature_n of_o faith_n and_o religion_n and_o with_o the_o design_n of_o god_n in_o send_v we_o into_o this_o world_n can_v be_v expect_v and_o i_o say_v that_o bate_v this_o there_o can_v be_v nothing_o add_v to_o the_o matter_n of_o the_o scripture_n revelation_n from_o whence_o therefore_o it_o plain_o follow_v that_o such_o as_o be_v not_o persuade_v by_o the_o gospel_n motive_n to_o repentance_n be_v not_o capable_a of_o be_v persuade_v by_o any_o such_o motive_n as_o consistent_o with_o the_o nature_n of_o faith_n and_o religion_n and_o virtue_n can_v be_v offer_v to_o they_o and_o it_o can_v be_v suppose_v that_o any_o true_a divine_a revelation_n shall_v ever_o offer_v any_o motive_n to_o persuade_v we_o that_o be_v not_o such_o but_o it_o may_v be_v say_v perhaps_o that_o though_o better_a or_o strong_a motive_n to_o repentance_n can_v be_v offer_v by_o any_o new_a revelation_n than_o be_v offer_v already_o in_o holy_a scripture_n yet_o we_o may_v by_o a_o new_a revelation_n have_v better_a assurance_n give_v we_o of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n motive_n and_o that_o if_o we_o have_v it_o be_v very_o like_a they_o will_v be_v then_o more_o prevail_a than_o they_o now_o be_v and_o this_o likewise_o i_o believe_v must_v be_v grant_v but_o then_o it_o be_v to_o be_v consider_v that_o the_o nature_n of_o faith_n and_o religion_n and_o of_o that_o state_n of_o trial_n which_o we_o be_v now_o in_o require_v that_o there_o shall_v be_v a_o reasonable_a boundary_a set_v to_o the_o clearness_n of_o that_o evidence_n that_o be_v give_v to_o man_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o those_o motive_n whereby_o they_o be_v to_o be_v persuade_v as_o well_o as_o to_o the_o force_n and_o strength_n of_o the_o motive_n themselves_o because_o as_o i_o note_v in_o my_o last_o discourse_n such_o very_a clear_a and_o strong_a evidence_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o religion_n as_o leave_v no_o room_n for_o a_o possibility_n of_o doubt_v will_v destroy_v
