obtain_v for_o he_o a_o gospel-forgiveness_n and_o that_o for_o this_o reason_n because_o there_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n in_o the_o gospel_n as_o a_o eternal_a punishment_n allot_v to_o sin_n and_o as_o under_o the_o last_o head_n we_o find_v that_o reason_n do_v fall_v in_o with_o the_o gospel_n and_o that_o they_o both_o speak_v the_o same_o thing_n so_o also_o we_o shall_v find_v it_o here_o for_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o punishment_n of_o sinful_a man_n can_v therefore_o never_o expiate_v his_o sin_n because_o it_o can_v never_o purchase_v a_o just_a release_n from_o punishment_n and_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o it_o can_v do_v that_o if_o it_o may_v be_v just_o continue_v to_o eternity_n and_o that_o it_o may_v be_v so_o we_o may_v learn_v from_o hence_o because_o the_o law_n of_o grace_n be_v god_n law_n as_o well_o as_o the_o law_n of_o work_n must_v for_o that_o reason_n be_v just_a and_o we_o be_v assure_v by_o this_o law_n as_o much_o as_o word_n can_v assure_v we_o that_o the_o punishment_n which_o it_o denounce_v against_o those_o who_o do_v not_o fulfil_v the_o condition_n of_o it_o be_v eternal_a and_o that_o it_o shall_v so_o prove_v beside_o the_o express_a word_n of_o the_o law_n we_o have_v this_o far_a reason_n which_o be_v that_o the_o suffer_v the_o punishment_n threaten_v by_o the_o law_n to_o those_o who_o neglect_v to_o perform_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o law_n can_v neither_o in_o sense_n or_o reason_n pass_v for_o the_o performance_n of_o such_o condition_n so_o neglect_v and_o that_o the_o neglect_v of_o this_o law_n shall_v and_o that_o in_o reason_n and_o justice_n be_v repay_v with_o a_o additional_a vengeance_n for_o the_o refusal_n of_o the_o mercy_n offer_v in_o it_o which_o design_n to_o free_v we_o from_o the_o punishment_n of_o all_o our_o other_o sin_n as_o well_o as_o with_o that_o punishment_n which_o be_v due_a to_o such_o sin_n for_o it_o be_v reason_n and_o justice_n that_o a_o more_o heinous_a sin_n shall_v be_v punish_v with_o a_o more_o grievous_a judgement_n and_o it_o be_v truth_n and_o reason_n that_o a_o sinner_n do_v then_o become_v a_o more_o heinous_a criminal_a when_o to_o his_o desert_n of_o punishment_n he_o add_v a_o neglect_n or_o contempt_n of_o the_o easy_a condition_n of_o pardon_n and_o since_o by_o the_o tenor_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n such_o sinner_n be_v to_o suffer_v his_o punishment_n after_o his_o resurrection_n from_o the_o dead_a that_o be_v not_o only_o after_o the_o time_n limit_v for_o the_o possibility_n of_o his_o pardon_n be_v expire_v but_o also_o after_o death_n itself_o shall_v be_v destroy_v as_o we_o may_v from_o thence_o conclude_v the_o certainty_n so_o may_v we_o also_o the_o eternal_a duration_n of_o his_o punishment_n for_o as_o a_o punishment_n due_a after_o the_o day_n of_o grace_n be_v past_a will_v not_o be_v remit_v so_o such_o punishment_n when_o death_n be_v no_o more_o can_v be_v determine_v by_o which_o we_o may_v understand_v that_o as_o death_n be_v without_o a_o saviour_n the_o just_a and_o necessary_a wage_n of_o sin_n as_o we_o make_v it_o good_a in_o our_o first_o chapter_n so_o also_o that_o when_o such_o death_n be_v sure_a by_o a_o resurrection_n purchase_v by_o a_o saviour_n to_o be_v take_v away_o in_o order_n to_o a_o happy_a and_o everlasting_a life_n and_o that_o too_o upon_o the_o easy_a or_o at_o worst_a the_o very_a feasible_a condition_n of_o the_o gospel_n yet_o if_o man_n will_v neglect_v such_o salvation_n so_o place_v within_o their_o reach_n and_o so_o leave_v the_o eternal_a life_n purchase_v for_o they_o in_o order_n to_o their_o happiness_n expose_v to_o the_o vengeance_n which_o be_v the_o just_a and_o necessary_a reward_n of_o all_o their_o other_o sin_n and_o of_o such_o their_o neglect_n they_o must_v impute_v it_o to_o their_o own_o folly_n if_o such_o vengeance_n in_o stead_n of_o happiness_n be_v the_o continue_a companion_n of_o their_o eternal_a life_n for_o in_o the_o case_n so_o put_v the_o restoration_n from_o death_n to_o life_n come_v from_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n the_o make_v that_o life_n eternal_a come_v from_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n the_o design_v to_o make_v that_o eternal_a life_n happy_a come_v from_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n the_o grant_v mean_n to_o man_n and_o those_o not_o very_o hard_o one_o neither_o of_o obtain_v that_o happiness_n come_v from_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n but_o foolish_a man_n defeat_v the_o counsel_n of_o god_n by_o a_o obstinate_a and_o unrelenting_a perseverance_n in_o sin_n and_o do_v in_o this_o case_n as_o he_o do_v in_o most_o other_o turn_v the_o blessing_n of_o god_n into_o a_o curse_n upon_o himself_o that_o be_v he_o make_v that_o life_n which_o be_v design_v for_o his_o eternal_a happiness_n a_o occasion_n of_o the_o eternity_n of_o his_o misery_n one_o thing_n more_o may_v be_v add_v to_o what_o have_v be_v say_v upon_o this_o head_n and_o then_o we_o shall_v apply_v it_o to_o our_o present_a design_n and_o that_o be_v that_o at_o that_o time_n when_o the_o punishment_n we_o now_o speak_v of_o shall_v come_v to_o be_v inflict_v our_o saviour_n as_o the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o will_v have_v lay_v down_o his_o mediatorial_n office_n and_o so_o man_n must_v stand_v the_o award_n of_o their_o own_o desert_n and_o then_o if_o such_o their_o desert_n be_v evil_a we_o may_v be_v instruct_v from_o what_o be_v say_v in_o the_o first_o chapter_n that_o the_o justice_n which_o will_v overtake_v they_o will_v be_v justice_n without_o mercy_n and_o that_o pure_a and_o unmixed_a vengeance_n will_v be_v their_o portion_n even_o such_o vengeance_n which_o will_v only_o revenge_v upon_o they_o the_o breach_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o their_o god_n but_o will_v never_o so_o much_o as_o pretend_v to_o make_v up_o such_o breach_n to_o our_o present_a purpose_n then_o if_o the_o punishment_n of_o man_n for_o their_o own_o sin_n shall_v without_o the_o interposition_n of_o a_o saviour_n be_v eternal_a and_o if_o this_o appear_v to_o be_v so_o by_o the_o testimony_n of_o that_o very_a gospel_n in_o which_o however_o there_o be_v a_o possibility_n of_o salvation_n hold_v forth_o and_o if_o reason_n do_v vouch_v for_o the_o truth_n of_o what_o the_o gospel_n in_o this_o case_n teach_v and_o last_o if_o a_o eternity_n of_o punishment_n be_v absolute_o inconsistent_a with_o a_o expiation_n of_o sin_n by_o such_o punishment_n for_o the_o last_o suppose_v the_o sin_n to_o be_v cancel_v and_o the_o first_o suppose_v it_o to_o be_v continue_v then_o we_o may_v conclude_v that_o the_o punishment_n of_o man_n for_o his_o sin_n can_v no_o more_o expâ—ate_a his_o sin_n under_o this_o head_n than_o his_o repentance_n as_o we_o there_o make_v it_o good_a can_v do_v so_o under_o the_o last_o anâ—_n then_o because_o there_o be_v no_o other_o possible_a way_n for_o mankind_n to_o expiate_v their_o sin_n but_o by_o their_o repentance_n or_o by_o their_o punishment_n wâ—_n do_v conclude_v that_o there_o be_v no_o possible_a way_n for_o they_o to_o make_v any_o expiation_n of_o it_o at_o all_o 3._o as_o man_n can_v expiate_v his_o sin_n by_o any_o punishment_n of_o his_o own_o neither_o by_o his_o repentance_n nor_o by_o his_o death_n whether_o temporâ—_fw-la or_o eternal_a so_o neither_o can_v he_o expiate_v his_o siâ—_n by_o the_o death_n of_o any_o other_o creature_n this_o 〈◊〉_d therefore_o add_v because_o we_o may_v be_v apt_a to_o surmise_v that_o what_o have_v be_v do_v already_o may_v be_v do_v again_o and_o we_o can_v hardly_o be_v ignorant_a that_o the_o life_n of_o other_o creature_n have_v be_v offer_v to_o god_n and_o that_o too_o by_o his_o own_o appointment_n for_o the_o expiation_n of_o the_o sinâ—_n of_o men._n and_o which_o be_v yet_o something_o more_o they_o have_v not_o only_o be_v offer_v by_o man_n but_o they_o have_v be_v also_o accept_v by_o god_n as_o aâ—_n effectual_a expiation_n and_o that_o they_o have_v beeâ—_n so_o the_o history_n of_o the_o jewish_a religion_n record_v in_o the_o bible_n itself_o may_v easy_o convince_v we_o but_o notwithstanding_o all_o this_o yet_o he_o who_o shall_v look_v near_o into_o the_o matter_n and_o examine_v it_o more_o nice_o will_v be_v satisfy_v 1._o that_o all_o those_o sacrifice_n though_o institute_v by_o god_n himself_o be_v only_a type_n and_o shadow_n of_o that_o great_a propitiatory_a sacrifice_n that_o be_v to_o expiate_v the_o sin_n of_o the_o whole_a world_n and_o therefore_o though_o they_o may_v serve_v to_o inform_v we_o that_o such_o a_o sacrifice_n ought_v to_o be_v in_o order_n to_o the_o expiation_n of_o sin_n and_o because_o they_o do_v prefigure_v such_o a_o sacrifice_n they_o may_v over_o and_o above_o foretell_v that_o such_o a_o sacrifice_n shall_v be_v yet_o because_o they_o themselves_o
that_o know_v that_o they_o all_o come_v from_o one_o single_a fountain_n that_o be_v from_o one_o single_a man_n and_o so_o that_o they_o be_v all_o but_o so_o many_o rivulet_n from_o that_o fountain_n and_o when_o moreover_o we_o be_v assure_v that_o our_o saviour_n be_v one_o of_o those_o rivulet_n for_o though_o our_o saviour_n be_v only_o to_o be_v make_v of_o the_o woman_n yet_o because_o the_o woman_n be_v make_v out_o of_o the_o man_n therefore_o our_o saviour_n do_v by_o the_o woman_n derive_v from_o the_o same_o one_o single_a person_n with_o the_o rest_n of_o mankind_n and_o that_o the_o intimacy_n of_o such_o relation_n consist_v in_o this_o that_o the_o saviour_n and_o all_o mankind_n do_v derive_v from_o one_o single_a and_o common_a fountain_n and_o hence_o we_o be_v tell_v in_o one_o place_n that_o as_o by_o man_n come_v death_n there_o be_v the_o sin_n of_o adam_n and_o the_o wage_n of_o such_o sin_n by_o man_n come_v also_o the_o resurrection_n of_o the_o dead_a there_o be_v the_o redemption_n of_o our_o saviour_n and_o his_o purchase_n and_o more_o express_o still_o to_o our_o present_a purpose_n speak_v the_o same_o apostle_n in_o the_o same_o chapter_n the_o fifteen_o of_o the_o first_o to_o the_o corinthian_n for_o as_o in_o adam_n all_o die_v so_o in_o christ_n shall_v all_o be_v make_v alive_a and_o to_o the_o same_o purpose_n again_o in_o the_o five_o to_o the_o roman_n and_o the_o eighteen_o verse_n therefore_o as_o by_o the_o offence_n of_o one_o judgement_n come_v upon_o all_o man_n to_o condemnation_n even_o so_o by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o one_o the_o free-gift_n come_v upon_o all_o man_n unto_o justification_n of_o life_n in_o all_o which_o text_n and_o several_a other_o that_o may_v be_v name_v it_o be_v upon_o himself_o have_v purchase_v form_n they_o and_o may_v mighty_o conduce_v to_o the_o remove_n of_o those_o difficulty_n which_o the_o enemy_n of_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n have_v throw_v as_o so_o many_o stumbling-block_n in_o the_o way_n of_o plain_a and_o honest_a christian_n 4._o the_o wisdom_n justice_n reasonableness_n and_o congruity_n of_o our_o saviour_n incarnation_n in_o order_n to_o his_o purchase_n of_o man_n redemption_n do_v yet_o far_o appear_v in_o that_o by_o become_a man_n he_o put_v himself_o into_o a_o capacity_n of_o suffer_a death_n that_o be_v of_o suffer_v that_o punishment_n which_o the_o law_n have_v denounce_v against_o those_o that_o shall_v transgress_v it_o for_o it_o be_v a_o gross_a mistake_n and_o do_v indeed_o bring_v a_o scandal_n upon_o god_n veracity_n to_o affirm_v that_o he_o threaten_v great_a vengeance_n in_o any_o law_n before_o the_o transgression_n of_o it_o than_o he_o will_v execute_v after_o the_o transgression_n that_o so_o he_o may_v the_o more_o effectual_o prevent_v such_o transgression_n for_o god_n never_o yet_o threaten_v any_o peremptory_a and_o unconditional_a punishment_n in_o any_o law_n which_o he_o have_v not_o or_o when_o the_o time_n come_v he_o will_v not_o as_o certain_o execute_v in_o the_o day_n thou_o eat_v thereof_o thou_o shall_v sure_o die_v say_v god_n the_o threaten_v we_o see_v be_v peremptory_a and_o the_o execution_n we_o find_v be_v so_o too_o and_o therefore_o all_o sinner_n die_v and_o i_o can_v in_o the_o least_o doubt_n but_o that_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n a_o eternal_a punishment_n will_v be_v the_o certain_a vengeance_n upon_o a_o final_a impenitence_n but_o that_o be_v not_o so_o direct_v to_o my_o present_a purpose_n and_o therefore_o here_o i_o pass_v it_o by_o but_o to_o confirm_v what_o i_o be_o now_o upon_o i_o say_v that_o god_n do_v not_o pardon_v the_o death_n threaten_v in_o his_o law_n against_o sin_n no_o not_o in_o consideration_n of_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n and_o therefore_o notwithstanding_o his_o death_n and_o that_o too_o in_o our_o stead_n we_o see_v that_o all_o man_n and_o even_o those_o who_o hope_v for_o salvation_n by_o such_o his_o death_n do_v yet_o die_v what_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n in_o this_o case_n have_v puchase_v for_o we_o be_v not_o a_o freedom_n but_o a_o release_n from_o death_n and_o therefore_o that_o redemption_n from_o death_n which_o be_v the_o purchase_n of_o his_o blood_n be_v to_o be_v accomplish_v after_o we_o have_v be_v dead_a by_o a_o resurrection_n a_o resurrection_n than_o be_v to_o make_v good_a the_o purchase_n of_o his_o death_n and_o therefore_o his_o death_n purchase_v for_o we_o not_o a_o freedom_n but_o a_o release_n from_o our_o death_n by_o such_o resurrection_n now_o as_o his_o death_n be_v necessary_a for_o such_o a_o purchase_n so_o his_o incarnation_n be_v necessary_a in_o order_n to_o such_o his_o death_n and_o he_o be_v therefore_o make_v of_o the_o same_o blood_n with_o all_o mankind_n that_o by_o shed_v that_o blood_n for_o mankind_n he_o may_v after_o his_o own_o resurrection_n restore_v the_o life_n of_o all_o man_n which_o have_v be_v forfeit_v by_o adam_n transgression_n so_o that_o as_o his_o death_n be_v the_o meritorious_a expiation_n of_o sin_n and_o as_o a_o resurrection_n be_v the_o fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o such_o his_o expiation_n so_o his_o incarnation_n be_v a_o necessary_a forerunner_n of_o such_o his_o death_n and_o therefore_o before_o he_o can_v possible_o die_v for_o man_n and_o so_o purchase_v a_o redemption_n of_o man_n from_o death_n it_o be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o law_n of_o wisdom_n justice_n and_o reason_n that_o he_o shall_v become_v man_n himself_o but_o then_o how_o his_o death_n come_v to_o be_v of_o so_o valuable_a a_o price_n as_o to_o make_v so_o glorious_a a_o purchase_n we_o must_v leave_v to_o far_a enquiry_n for_o by_o that_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o as_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o he_o shall_v die_v the_o death_n of_o a_o man_n so_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o such_o his_o humanity_n shall_v be_v unite_v to_o the_o divinity_n and_o by_o both_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o god_n be_v manifest_v in_o the_o flesh_n to_o destroy_v the_o work_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o that_o therefore_o when_o the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o so_o much_o they_o tell_v we_o no_o more_o than_o what_o be_v agreeable_a to_o wisdom_n justice_n and_o reason_n chap._n vi_o the_o divinity_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n necessary_a for_o the_o expitation_n of_o man_n sin_n as_o well_o as_o his_o humanity_n some_o doctrinal_a inference_n a_o general_a proof_n that_o as_o our_o saviour_n do_v actual_o die_v so_o that_o he_o may_v just_o die_v for_o the_o expiation_n of_o sin_n have_v therefore_o see_v that_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n be_v qualify_v by_o his_o incarnation_n to_o make_v a_o expiation_n for_o sin_n by_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o himself_o and_o that_o such_o his_o qualification_n be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o law_n of_o justice_n and_o to_o the_o rule_n of_o reason_n and_o wisdom_n our_o next_o enquiry_n must_v be_v how_o such_o his_o sacrifice_n come_v to_o be_v of_o such_o a_o value_n as_o to_o be_v just_o sufficient_a to_o make_v good_a such_o a_o expiation_n for_o because_o the_o death_n of_o a_o innocent_a man_n if_o he_o be_v no_o more_o than_o a_o mere_a man_n be_v but_o the_o death_n of_o a_o creature_n and_o because_o no_o creature_n can_v by_o its_o punishment_n in_o another_o creature_n be_v stead_n expiate_v the_o sin_n of_o that_o other_o creature_n for_o if_o it_o can_v than_o a_o creature_n may_v by_o its_o own_o punishment_n
the_o law_n have_v promise_v to_o such_o obedience_n 1._o now_o in_o order_n to_o our_o make_v good_a our_o first_o proposition_n we_o must_v examine_v what_o qualification_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a in_o order_n to_o fit_v any_o one_o to_o make_v such_o purchase_n and_o then_o inquire_v far_o whether_o such_o qualification_n either_o do_v or_o can_v belong_v to_o any_o other_o beside_o our_o saviour_n alone_o 1._o now_o the_o first_o and_o lead_v qualification_n in_o he_o who_o shall_v be_v fit_v for_o the_o purchase_n of_o a_o release_n from_o the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n which_o they_o have_v incur_v who_o transgress_v the_o law_n be_v that_o he_o who_o make_v such_o a_o purchase_n must_v be_v one_o of_o the_o same_o kind_a with_o they_o to_o who_o the_o law_n be_v give_v that_o be_v in_o the_o present_a case_n must_v be_v a_o man._n for_o the_o law_n be_v give_v to_o man_n be_v break_v by_o man_n and_o therefore_o also_o the_o breach_n of_o it_o in_o the_o congruity_n of_o thing_n and_o by_o the_o law_n of_o common_a sense_n and_o justice_n be_v to_o be_v punish_v in_o man._n now_o though_o our_o saviour_n be_v not_o the_o only_a person_n in_o the_o world_n who_o have_v this_o qualification_n for_o every_o man_n beside_o be_v as_o real_a a_o man_n as_o he_o be_v yet_o he_o be_v the_o only_a man_n among_o all_o mankind_n who_o by_o this_o qualification_n be_v fit_v for_o the_o effectual_a enterprise_v and_o bring_v to_o pass_v those_o other_o thing_n which_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a for_o the_o purchase_n of_o the_o release_v speak_v of_o 2._o for_o second_o the_o next_o qualification_n of_o he_o who_o be_v fit_v for_o the_o purchase_n of_o a_o release_n from_o the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n be_v that_o he_o must_v be_v a_o innocent_a man._n he_o be_v to_o be_v a_o lamb_n without_o spot_n or_o blemish_n and_o to_o answer_v to_o the_o paschal_n lamb_n which_o in_o this_o as_o in_o several_a other_o thing_n be_v a_o type_n of_o that_o lamb_n of_o god_n which_o shall_v take_v away_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n for_o he_o who_o be_v qualify_v to_o suffer_v for_o other_o in_o order_n to_o release_v those_o other_o from_o the_o penalty_n of_o sin_n must_v not_o therefore_o be_v a_o sinner_n himself_o because_o if_o he_o be_v so_o than_o he_o must_v by_o the_o law_n of_o justice_n and_o even_o according_a to_o the_o tenor_n of_o that_o law_n which_o assign_v such_o penalty_n suffer_v the_o penalty_n for_o his_o own_o sin_n and_o he_o who_o suffer_v the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n for_o his_o own_o sin_n can_v therefore_o suffer_v the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o at_o least_o in_o the_o present_a case_n he_o can_v because_o the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n upon_o the_o transgression_n of_o it_o be_v the_o loss_n of_o life_n his_o own_o penalty_n exhaust_v the_o whole_a stock_n or_o possibility_n of_o his_o so_o suffer_v for_o he_o who_o have_v but_o one_o can_v make_v such_o a_o purchase_n for_o himself_o for_o what_o no_o single_a man_n death_n can_v do_v for_o himself_o that_o the_o death_n of_o all_o man_n can_v do_v for_o all_o for_o there_o be_v just_a the_o same_o proportion_n between_o all_o man_n and_o the_o death_n of_o all_o that_o there_o be_v between_o one_o man_n and_o the_o death_n of_o one_o beside_o suppose_v a_o man_n to_o be_v a_o transgressor_n of_o the_o law_n it_o look_v very_o absurd_a to_o affirm_v that_o the_o death_n of_o such_o a_o man_n which_o be_v the_o punishment_n of_o his_o transgression_n can_v be_v the_o purchase_n of_o his_o release_n from_o such_o punishment_n for_o then_o the_o selfsame_a thing_n and_o that_o be_v his_o death_n will_v bear_v a_o quite_o contrary_a character_n for_o it_o will_v be_v both_o the_o wage_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o the_o purchase_n of_o his_o ransom_n that_o be_v it_o will_v be_v the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o his_o freedom_n from_o the_o same_o vengeance_n every_o sinner_n therefore_o against_o the_o law_n must_v be_v a_o sufferer_n under_o the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o law_n and_o that_o law_n which_o adjudge_v those_o who_o transgress_v it_o to_o death_n do_v not_o by_o so_o do_v design_n to_o return_v they_o to_o life_n for_o if_o it_o do_v then_o by_o inflict_v its_o sentence_n it_o must_v design_n to_o revoke_v man_n who_o it_o seize_v now_o this_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o all_o man_n who_o die_v because_o they_o be_v sinner_n we_o may_v from_o hence_o safe_o conclude_v that_o if_o any_o man_n who_o be_v not_o a_o sinner_n shall_v undertake_v by_o his_o own_o death_n to_o make_v good_a the_o ransom_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n from_o death_n and_o after_o that_o shall_v make_v good_a his_o undertake_n i_o say_v if_o any_o man_n shall_v do_v this_o we_o may_v be_v sure_a that_o his_o death_n or_o his_o life_n which_o you_o will_v be_v therefore_o of_o more_o value_n than_o the_o life_n or_o death_n natural_a appetite_n or_o want_n do_v desire_n or_o require_v they_o and_o where_o their_o power_n and_o faculty_n be_v such_o in_o pursuit_n of_o such_o their_o desire_n they_o endeavour_v to_o we_o be_v instruct_v both_o by_o god_n word_n and_o by_o our_o own_o experience_n that_o though_o a_o perfect_a holiness_n may_v be_v hearty_o desire_v and_o sincere_o endeavour_v after_o yet_o that_o it_o be_v never_o attain_v by_o any_o man_n in_o this_o life_n and_o therefore_o so_o neither_o be_v a_o perfect_a happiness_n the_o evidence_n for_o the_o first_o be_v because_o all_o man_n in_o this_o world_n be_v sinner_n and_o the_o evidence_n for_o the_o last_o be_v because_o all_o man_n in_o this_o world_n be_v mortal_a now_o as_o sin_n be_v a_o infallible_a confutation_n of_o a_o perfect_a holiness_n so_o mortality_n be_v a_o infallible_a confutation_n of_o a_o perfect_a happiness_n we_o be_v therefore_o at_o last_o arrive_v thus_o far_o that_o no_o man_n shall_v arrive_v at_o a_o perfect_a holiness_n till_o he_o be_v translate_v to_o another_o world_n and_o because_o it_o be_v difficult_a if_o not_o impossible_a to_o conceive_v how_o any_o man_n shall_v arrive_v at_o a_o happiness_n which_o our_o saviour_n have_v purchase_v for_o believer_n be_v a_o eternal_a happiness_n and_o because_o as_o we_o have_v see_v it_o be_v impossible_a that_o there_o shall_v be_v any_o such_o thing_n as_o a_o eternal_a happiness_n without_o a_o eternal_a holiness_n and_o because_o to_o pretend_v to_o bestow_v a_o everlasting_a happiness_n upon_o man_n and_o not_o a_o everlasting_a holiness_n without_o which_o such_o a_o happiness_n be_v impossible_a be_v to_o mock_v man_n and_o not_o to_o save_v he_o and_o because_o last_o we_o can_v without_o blasphemy_n and_o absurdity_n to_o show_v wherein_o the_o happiness_n of_o such_o eternal_a life_n do_v consist_v but_o before_o we_o speak_v to_o that_o i_o shall_v lay_v down_o two_o or_o three_o practical_a consideration_n which_o as_o they_o look_v back_o to_o what_o have_v be_v speak_v already_o so_o will_v be_v no_o improper_a introduction_n to_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v to_o follow_v 1._o and_o first_o we_o top_v appetite_n be_v that_o of_o life_n so_o we_o be_v tell_v by_o the_o same_o
it_o then_o let_v the_o punishment_n be_v what_o it_o will_v yet_o still_o it_o will_v be_v just_a now_o where_o a_o person_n do_v willing_o free_o and_o oâ—_n his_o own_o accord_n submit_v to_o a_o punishment_n there_o the_o punishment_n though_o he_o do_v not_o by_o his_o crime_n deserve_v it_o can_v therefore_o be_v think_v unjust_a because_o it_o will_v be_v a_o odd_a and_o unheard-of_a kind_n of_o injustice_n to_o any_o person_n to_o injure_v he_o by_o sulfil_v his_o own_o desire_n and_o by_o gratify_v his_o choice_n if_o then_o we_o apply_v this_o to_o our_o saviour_n suffering_n which_o he_o undergo_v in_o our_o stead_n we_o may_v be_v inform_v by_o he_o himself_o that_o he_o lay_v down_o his_o life_n and_o that_o no_o man_n take_v it_o from_o he_o that_o be_v he_o lay_v it_o of_o which_o there_o be_v no_o just_a law_n and_o therefore_o the_o case_n of_o our_o saviour_n in_o the_o present_a instance_n do_v so_o far_o forth_o differ_v from_o all_o the_o case_n of_o all_o of_o it_o as_o he_o himself_o shall_v please_v and_o if_o he_o shall_v by_o any_o mean_n destroy_v it_o without_o his_o own_o demerit_n it_o will_v be_v in_o he_o self-murder_n and_o that_o too_o though_o he_o shall_v offer_v it_o for_o a_o criminal_a but_o if_o he_o shall_v so_o order_v his_o life_n as_o to_o deserve_v death_n then_o that_o very_a crime_n that_o forfeit_v his_o life_n will_v spoil_v his_o innocence_n too_o and_o therefore_o shall_v a_o magistrate_n who_o be_v invest_v with_o the_o lawful_a power_n of_o the_o sword_n accept_v the_o life_n of_o a_o innocent_a in_o lieu_n of_o the_o forfeit_a life_n of_o a_o criminal_a he_o will_v therefore_o become_v a_o criminal_a himself_o because_o in_o such_o a_o commutation_n he_o allow_v the_o innocent_a man_n to_o become_v a_o criminal_a by_o usurp_v upon_o the_o prerogative_n of_o god_n himself_o which_o may_v serve_v to_o show_v the_o fraud_n and_o deceit_n of_o that_o way_n of_o argue_v which_o will_v not_o therefore_o allow_v it_o to_o be_v just_a that_o our_o saviour_n shall_v offer_v his_o life_n as_o a_o sacrifice_n for_o sinner_n because_o it_o can_v be_v just_o allow_v that_o other_o innocent_a person_n shall_v do_v so_o whereas_o the_o life_n which_o our_o saviour_n offer_v in_o the_o present_a case_n be_v entire_o his_o own_o and_o absolute_o at_o his_o own_o disposal_n which_o yet_o can_v be_v true_o affirm_v of_o the_o life_n of_o any_o other_o innocent_a person_n in_o the_o world_n if_o yet_o we_o shall_v suppose_v such_o a_o person_n from_o the_o day_n of_o the_o creation_n to_o the_o consummation_n of_o all_o thing_n as_o therefore_o we_o learn_v by_o the_o last_o head_n that_o god_n may_v have_v refuse_v to_o accept_v our_o saviour_n death_n in_o our_o stead_n because_o the_o they_o make_v death_n a_o natural_a thing_n which_o by_o the_o way_n be_v but_o a_o heathen-notion_n of_o it_o for_o it_o do_v not_o in_o the_o least_o agree_v with_o what_o the_o scripture_n teach_v we_o about_o it_o but_o i_o say_v they_o themselves_o allow_v our_o saviour_n to_o be_v innocent_a and_o therefore_o they_o must_v allow_v that_o
carnal_a and_o profane_a creature_n a_o pride_n hateful_a to_o god_n and_o man_n and_o such_o which_o have_v constant_o betray_v itself_o to_o come_v from_o that_o proud_a spirit_n which_o be_v the_o great_a deceiver_n by_o the_o detect_v falsity_n forgery_n and_o villainy_n of_o its_o most_o celebrate_a pretender_n let_v we_o therefore_o have_v a_o care_n that_o we_o be_v sober_a and_o humble_a flesh_n and_o so_o under_o the_o law_n do_v alone_o in_o justice_n deserve_v that_o eternal_a happiness_n which_o be_v promise_v in_o the_o gospel_n so_o the_o imputation_n of_o such_o his_o righteousness_n to_o believer_n be_v the_o only_a true_a and_o just_a reason_n why_o they_o shall_v be_v make_v partaker_n of_o such_o eternal_a happiness_n when_o the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o in_o the_o four_o to_o the_o galatian_n the_o four_o and_o five_o verse_n that_o god_n send_v forth_o his_o son_n make_v of_o a_o woman_n make_v under_o the_o law_n to_o redeem_v they_o that_o be_v under_o the_o law_n he_o seem_v to_o insinuate_v at_o least_o that_o our_o saviour_n be_v under_o the_o law_n be_v in_o such_o saviour_n a_o requisite_a condition_n in_o order_n to_o his_o work_n out_o of_o man_n salvation_n now_o have_v our_o saviour_n be_v such_o a_o man_n as_o other_o man_n be_v the_o reward_n it_o be_v confess_v have_v only_o concern_v his_o own_o obedience_n but_o because_o by_o take_v upon_o he_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n he_o oblige_v himself_o to_o obey_v that_o law_n which_o god_n have_v give_v to_o man_n and_o because_o he_o take_v upon_o himself_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n when_o he_o may_v have_v refuse_v so_o to_o do_v and_o last_o because_o he_o take_v it_o upon_o himself_o for_o man_n sake_n alone_o and_o not_o for_o his_o own_o therefore_o for_o man_n sake_n alone_o and_o not_o for_o his_o own_o he_o put_v himself_o under_o a_o obligation_n of_o obey_v the_o law_n from_o all_o which_o the_o least_o that_o can_v be_v infer_v be_v that_o man_n be_v to_o reap_v some_o considerable_a benefit_n and_o advantage_n from_o such_o his_o obedience_n it_o be_v usual_o allege_v in_o this_o place_n that_o have_v he_o not_o obey_v the_o law_n himself_o he_o can_v not_o have_v be_v qualify_v to_o make_v a_o expiation_n by_o his_o death_n for_o the_o transgression_n of_o other_o and_o we_o may_v take_v notice_n that_o they_o who_o offer_v this_o allegation_n do_v in_o effect_n tell_v we_o that_o his_o persect_n obedience_n to_o the_o law_n be_v nothing_o more_o in_o order_n to_o man_n salvation_n than_o a_o previous_a condition_n to_o sit_v and_o capacitate_v he_o to_o make_v such_o expiation_n 2._o and_o therefore_o we_o offer_v it_o to_o consideration_n in_o the_o second_o place_n that_o the_o reward_n promise_v in_o a_o saviour_n to_o those_o who_o do_v confess_o pay_v but_o a_o imperfect_a obedience_n to_o the_o law_n be_v great_a than_o that_o reward_n which_o be_v promise_v to_o adam_n perfect_a obedience_n without_o a_o saviour_n it_o be_v true_a there_o be_v not_o in_o the_o law_n give_v to_o adam_n any_o express_a promise_n at_o all_o but_o than_o it_o be_v as_o true_a that_o there_o be_v a_o imply_v promise_n for_o when_o the_o law_n do_v threaten_v his_o transgression_n with_o death_n it_o do_v as_o good_a as_o promise_v life_n to_o his_o obedience_n and_o indeed_o there_o be_v no_o occasion_n much_o reward_n which_o be_v promise_v to_o adam_n perfect_a innocence_n because_o we_o be_v assure_v by_o the_o gospel_n that_o eye_n have_v not_o see_v nor_o ear_n hear_v nor_o can_v it_o enter_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n to_o conceive_v the_o reward_n which_o god_n have_v prepare_v for_o those_o who_o in_o a_o saviour_n shall_v be_v save_v but_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o no_o such_o thing_n can_v be_v true_o say_v of_o the_o reward_n promise_v to_o man_n in_o his_o innocence_n for_o he_o know_v his_o reward_n experimental_o and_o therefore_o it_o can_v not_o be_v to_o he_o inconceivable_a put_v we_o the_o question_v then_o how_o come_v the_o reward_n promise_v in_o the_o new_a covenant_n so_o far_o to_o differ_v from_o and_o to_o exceed_v the_o reward_n promise_v in_o the_o old_a for_o no_o doubt_n there_o be_v therefore_o a_o good_a reason_n for_o such_o difference_n because_o all_o god_n word_n and_o action_n proceed_v if_o i_o may_v be_v allow_v so_o to_o at_o all_o to_o his_o reward_n therefore_o we_o do_v at_o last_o conclude_v that_o that_o immense_a reward_n which_o the_o gospel_n assign_v to_o the_o believe_a christian_a it_o do_v assign_v to_o or_o in_o his_o death_n or_o in_o other_o word_n whether_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o reward_n be_v not_o so_o ground_v upon_o our_o saviour_n obedience_n as_o the_o promise_n of_o pardon_n be_v happiness_n of_o believer_n can_v be_v the_o purchase_n of_o our_o saviour_n obedience_n to_o the_o law_n to_o which_o i_o shall_v say_v no_o more_o at_o present_a than_o this_o viz._n that_o it_o be_v agree_v that_o our_o saviour_n by_o his_o death_n take_v away_o death_n the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n and_o make_v good_a such_o his_o achievement_n by_o a_o resurrection_n now_o the_o life_n after_o the_o resurrection_n be_v a_o life_n in_o a_o spiritual_a body_n not_o in_o a_o natural_a i_o speak_v the_o apostle_n word_n and_o our_o natural_a reason_n tell_v we_o that_o a_o life_n in_o a_o spiritual_a body_n be_v a_o more_o refine_a and_o exalt_a life_n than_o a_o life_n in_o a_o natural_a body_n and_o that_o in_o multitude_n of_o circumstance_n it_o must_v needs_o differ_v from_o it_o perhaps_o in_o so_o many_o that_o it_o may_v be_v as_o inconceivable_a to_o we_o now_o as_o the_o future_a happiness_n of_o the_o saint_n and_o yet_o this_o refine_a and_o exalt_a life_n be_v no_o good_a argument_n that_o it_o be_v not_o purchase_v by_o our_o saviour_n death_n nor_o that_o such_o his_o death_n have_v no_o eye_n to_o the_o law_n of_o work_n in_o such_o purchase_n and_o so_o say_v we_o though_o the_o happiness_n of_o the_o bless_a be_v great_a vast_o great_a than_o what_o be_v by_o the_o law_n of_o work_n promise_v to_o adam_n upon_o his_o obedience_n yet_o that_o can_v never_o make_v it_o out_o that_o such_o happiness_n be_v not_o the_o purchase_n of_o our_o saviour_n obedience_n or_o that_o such_o his_o obedience_n be_v not_o a_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n of_o work_n it_o may_v indeed_o convince_v we_o of_o the_o supereminent_a dignity_n of_o his_o person_n and_o of_o the_o inconceivable_a value_n of_o that_o reward_n which_o by_o be_v purchase_v by_o he_o derive_v such_o its_o value_n from_o such_o his_o dignity_n as_o we_o observe_v before_o and_o which_o be_v direct_o to_o our_o present_a purpose_n it_o may_v furthermore_o convince_v we_o that_o the_o reward_n of_o believer_n be_v the_o reward_n of_o their_o saviour_n obedience_n make_v over_o to_o they_o but_o not_o a_o reward_n that_o do_v or_o can_v belong_v to_o their_o own_o at_o the_o very_o best_a imperfect_a righteousness_n i_o know_v very_o well_o that_o this_o doctrine_n be_v deny_v by_o many_o divine_n and_o other_o learned_a man_n and_o those_o too_o not_o only_o such_o who_o do_v utter_o deny_v that_o god_n bestow_v salvation_n upon_o man_n in_o consideration_n of_o their_o saviour_n merit_n and_o purchase_n but_o even_o by_o the_o generality_n of_o those_o who_o yet_o do_v ascribe_v the_o salvation_n of_o man_n to_o such_o purchase_n and_o merit_n what_o reason_n they_o offer_v for_o such_o their_o denial_n we_o shall_v speak_v to_o hereafter_o but_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n we_o shall_v go_v on_o to_o make_v good_a the_o imputation_n against_o each_o party_n that_o deny_v it_o and_o after_o that_o shall_v show_v that_o the_o reason_n of_o such_o their_o denial_n have_v not_o that_o weight_n which_o they_o seem_v to_o have_v 1._o and_o first_o we_o shall_v speak_v to_o they_o who_o do_v not_o bare_o acknowledge_v but_o even_o contend_v that_o the_o salvation_n of_o man_n be_v obtain_v in_o consideration_n of_o the_o merit_n that_o be_v in_o consideration_n of_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n and_o the_o man_n of_o who_o we_o now_o speak_v do_v maintain_v that_o in_o order_n to_o man_n redemption_n our_o saviour_n die_v for_o man_n sin_n and_o that_o by_o such_o his_o death_n he_o puchase_v for_o man_n a_o freedom_n from_o that_o vengeance_n which_o be_v the_o just_a wage_n of_o such_o sin_n now_o what_o they_o so_o maintain_v we_o believe_v to_o be_v true_a and_o be_v ready_a to_o join_v hand_n with_o they_o to_o make_v it_o good_a against_o all_o the_o adversary_n of_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n so_o far_o therefore_o we_o be_v agree_v but_o then_o it_o may_v be_v demand_v how_o our_o saviour_n can_v possible_o suffer_v for_o man_n sin_n if_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n be_v not_o impute_v to_o he_o for_o in_o order_n to_o his_o suffering_n for_o man_n sin_n he_o must_v take_v upon_o he_o such_o sin_n and_o the_o take_n upon_o he_o man_n sin_n be_v the_o have_v man_n sin_n account_v as_o his_o own_o that_o be_v in_o effect_n and_o in_o other_o word_n the_o have_v man_n sin_n impute_v to_o he_o and_o then_o on_o the_o other_o side_n how_o can_v man_n have_v any_o pretence_n of_o benefit_n from_o his_o saviour_n suffering_n if_o the_o merit_n of_o such_o suffering_n be_v not_o impute_v to_o man_n for_o without_o such_o imputation_n the_o merit_n be_v it_o what_o it_o will_v can_v only_o belong_v to_o the_o saviour_n himself_o it_o be_v evident_a therefore_o by_o what_o have_v be_v say_v in_o short_a but_o may_v be_v make_v out_o in_o more_o word_n that_o they_o who_o assert_v the_o expiation_n of_o sin_n by_o our_o saviour_n suffering_n in_o man_n stead_n do_v therefore_o entitle_v man_n to_o the_o benefit_n of_o such_o expiation_n because_o man_n sin_n be_v impute_v to_o his_o saviour_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o saviour_n suffering_n at_o least_o impute_v to_o man._n thing_n therefore_o stand_v thus_o in_o the_o case_n of_o the_o expiation_n it_o may_v be_v reasonable_o and_o further_o demand_v why_o our_o saviour_n righteousness_n or_o obedience_n may_v not_o as_o warrantable_o be_v impute_v to_o man_n as_o man_n sin_n may_v be_v impute_v to_o his_o saviour_n or_o why_o the_o eternal_a happiness_n which_o be_v assign_v as_o the_o reward_n of_o obedience_n by_o the_o law_n may_v not_o be_v bestow_v upon_o man_n in_o consideration_n that_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o saviour_n obedience_n be_v impute_v to_o man_n as_o well_o as_o a_o release_n from_o punishment_n may_v be_v grant_v to_o man_n in_o consideration_n that_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o saviour_n punishment_n be_v impute_v to_o man_n for_o there_o be_v the_o very_a selfsame_a reason_n why_o the_o obedience_n of_o our_o saviour_n shall_v be_v impute_v to_o man_n in_o order_n to_o man_n salvation_n that_o there_o be_v that_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n shall_v be_v impute_v to_o our_o saviour_n in_o order_n to_o such_o saviour_n condemnation_n and_o there_o be_v the_o selfsame_a reason_n why_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n obedience_n shall_v be_v impute_v to_o man_n in_o order_n to_o man_n obtain_v eternal_a life_n as_o there_o be_v
because_o in_o the_o case_n so_o put_v he_o can_v have_v no_o concern_v with_o justice_n but_o what_o be_v his_o own_o and_o because_o he_o himself_o have_v pay_v a_o exact_a obedience_n to_o the_o law_n and_o because_o life_n be_v the_o reward_n of_o such_o obedience_n as_o death_n be_v the_o wage_n of_o disobedience_n therefore_o if_o we_o do_v allow_v he_o to_o have_v unload_v himself_o of_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n which_o he_o have_v take_v upon_o himself_o by_o his_o death_n we_o must_v and_o do_v by_o so_o do_v reinstate_v he_o in_o his_o own_o right_n that_o be_v we_o must_v allow_v that_o he_o have_v a_o right_a to_o be_v and_o therefore_o in_o justice_n ought_v to_o be_v restore_v to_o life_n again_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o at_o all_o to_o be_v question_v but_o that_o our_o saviour_n have_v never_o die_v at_o all_o if_o he_o have_v never_o take_v upon_o himself_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o men._n but_o of_o this_o more_o by_o and_o by_o in_o the_o mean_a while_n these_o thing_n be_v lay_v down_o we_o proceed_v and_o 1._o observe_v in_o the_o first_o place_n that_o our_o saviour_n resurrection_n be_v almost_o constant_o by_o the_o scripture_n of_o the_o new_a testament_n ascribe_v to_o god_n the_o father_n and_o multitude_n of_o text_n may_v be_v quote_v for_o it_o as_o the_o second_o of_o the_o act_n ver_fw-la 24_o &_o 30._o the_o five_o chapter_n of_o the_o same_o ver_fw-la 26_o &_o 30._o the_o ten_o ver_fw-la 40._o the_o seventeen_o ver_fw-la 31._o the_o ten_o to_o the_o roman_n ver_fw-la 9_o the_o first_o to_o the_o corinthian_n chap._n 6._o make_v use_n of_o these_o text_n for_o such_o their_o purpose_n but_o we_o know_v withal_o that_o there_o be_v other_o text_n though_o indeed_o not_o so_o many_o and_o some_o of_o they_o when_o compare_v with_o their_o context_n not_o so_o categorical_a which_o yet_o ascribe_v his_o resurrection_n to_o himself_o such_o be_v that_o in_o the_o second_o chapter_n of_o st._n john_n v._o 19_o destroy_v this_o temple_n and_o in_o three_o day_n i_o will_v raise_v it_o up_o and_o so_o again_o in_o the_o ten_o of_o st._n john_n v._o 18._o no_o man_n take_v it_o from_o i_o but_o i_o lay_v it_o down_o of_o myself_o i_o have_v power_n to_o lay_v it_o down_o and_o i_o have_v power_n to_o take_v it_o again_o now_o as_o we_o make_v it_o out_o just_a now_o that_o after_o the_o expiation_n finish_v he_o have_v a_o right_a to_o rise_v from_o the_o dead_a so_o we_o do_v not_o at_o all_o question_n but_o that_o he_o have_v a_o power_n to_o raise_v himself_o too_o but_o though_o it_o shall_v be_v allow_v as_o we_o do_v not_o at_o all_o question_n and_o that_o too_o from_o several_a thing_n already_o lay_v down_o and_o make_v good_a but_o that_o it_o may_v be_v prove_v but_o i_o say_v though_o it_o shall_v be_v allow_v that_o he_o have_v both_o a_o right_n and_o a_o power_n to_o raise_v himself_o from_o the_o dead_a yet_o notwithstanding_o that_o it_o be_v not_o altogether_o so_o congruous_a or_o agreeable_a to_o the_o equitable_a proceed_n of_o justice_n that_o he_o shall_v exercise_v such_o his_o power_n or_o put_v himself_o into_o the_o possession_n of_o such_o his_o right_n in_o the_o present_a case_n for_o because_o he_o have_v submit_v to_o offer_v his_o life_n a_o expiatory_a sacrifice_n to_o the_o divine_a justice_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n he_o have_v it_o must_v be_v confess_v that_o the_o offering_n of_o the_o blood_n to_o god_n be_v in_o order_n to_o his_o acceptance_n and_o that_o god_n acceptance_n of_o the_o blood_n that_o be_v of_o the_o life_n of_o the_o sacrifice_n be_v the_o ratification_n of_o that_o expiation_n that_o be_v make_v by_o such_o sacrifice_n and_o in_o deed_n and_o truth_n our_o saviour_n in_o the_o business_n now_o before_o we_o be_v both_o the_o priest_n and_o the_o sacrifice_n to_o god_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n and_o his_o resurrection_n be_v the_o first_o testimony_n or_o declaration_n of_o the_o acceptance_n of_o such_o his_o sacrifice_n we_o can_v in_o any_o congruity_n suppose_v that_o such_o testimony_n or_o declaration_n shall_v be_v ascribe_v to_o any_o other_o but_o to_o god_n alone_o and_o therefore_o as_o all_o those_o text_n which_o ascribe_v our_o saviour_n resurrection_n to_o god_n do_v in_o this_o case_n speak_v strict_o and_o proper_o so_o we_o may_v now_o by_o what_o have_v be_v say_v perceive_v that_o they_o be_v no_o prejudice_n to_o his_o divinity_n because_o he_o have_v oblige_v himself_o to_o offer_v that_o body_n to_o which_o his_o deity_n be_v unite_v a_o sacrifice_n for_o sin_n he_o have_v by_o the_o same_o act_n oblige_v himself_o to_o expect_v from_o god_n the_o approbation_n and_o allowance_n of_o such_o his_o sacrifice_n and_o therefore_o also_o to_o receive_v from_o he_o his_o resurrection_n which_o be_v a_o effectual_a declaration_n of_o such_o allowance_n and_o therefore_o 2._o i_o do_v offer_v it_o to_o consideration_n that_o the_o resurrection_n of_o our_o saviour_n from_o the_o dead_a be_v a_o undoubted_a argument_n that_o he_o have_v finish_v and_o complete_v that_o expiation_n which_o he_o have_v undertake_v to_o make_v by_o the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n and_o because_o we_o be_v assure_v by_o the_o same_o natural_a reason_n that_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v unjust_a to_o inflict_v the_o same_o punishment_n upon_o a_o our_o present_a purpose_n and_o argument_n that_o death_n be_v what_o the_o law_n threaten_v for_o our_o sin_n and_o that_o we_o be_v sinner_n and_o so_o have_v incur_v the_o vengeance_n threaten_v
our_o saviour_n who_o as_o we_o have_v show_v have_v a_o absolute_a and_o uncontrollable_a power_n to_o dispose_v of_o his_o own_o life_n as_o he_o himself_o please_v do_v put_v himself_o in_o our_o stead_n become_v a_o sacrifice_n for_o we_o and_o so_o in_o his_o own_o person_n suffer_v that_o death_n which_o we_o by_o our_o sin_n have_v deserve_v but_o then_o to_o the_o make_v good_a of_o our_o present_a proposition_n we_o add_v that_o as_o he_o suffer_v death_n for_o the_o expiation_n of_o our_o sin_n so_o if_o he_o have_v not_o finish_v and_o complete_v such_o expiation_n he_o have_v not_o rose_n again_o for_o so_o long_o as_o the_o gild_n remain_v so_o long_o the_o punishment_n be_v and_o that_o too_o in_o justice_n to_o be_v continue_v for_o in_o such_o case_n there_o have_v be_v the_o same_o reason_n for_o the_o continuation_n of_o the_o punishment_n that_o there_o be_v for_o its_o first_o infliction_n and_o therefore_o as_o it_o be_v first_o inflict_v for_o a_o gild_n so_o it_o must_v have_v be_v continue_v for_o the_o continuation_n of_o such_o gild_n from_o which_o we_o do_v infer_v that_o if_o he_o be_v just_o acquit_v from_o the_o continuation_n of_o the_o a_o sufficient_a ransom_n and_o have_v make_v a_o sufficient_a expiation_n for_o such_o sin_n so_o that_o strict_o speak_v in_o his_o death_n consist_v the_o punishment_n of_o our_o sin_n in_o the_o infinite_a value_n of_o his_o death_n consist_v the_o expiation_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o in_o the_o resurrection_n appear_v the_o full_a proof_n and_o evidence_n of_o such_o his_o expiation_n before_o it_o down_o and_o so_o he_o may_v for_o any_o thing_n that_o justice_n can_v offer_v to_o the_o contrary_a have_v descend_v alive_a from_o the_o cross_n after_o he_o have_v once_o die_v upon_o it_o nor_o need_v his_o resurrection_n in_o point_n of_o justice_n to_o have_v be_v defer_v to_o the_o three_o day_n but_o may_v have_v god_n so_o please_v have_v be_v cause_v on_o the_o first_o but_o our_o faith_n the_o first_o be_v the_o purchase_n of_o our_o salvation_n the_o last_o be_v our_o assurance_n of_o and_o therefore_o also_o our_o comfort_n in_o such_o a_o purchase_n by_o which_o we_o may_v understand_v that_o his_o love_n be_v express_v to_o we_o even_o in_o the_o grave_a and_o though_o as_o the_o psalmist_n speak_v no_o man_n remember_v god_n in_o the_o pit_n yet_o we_o may_v hence_o learn_v that_o even_o in_o the_o pit_n our_o god_n both_o can_v and_o have_v remember_v we_o we_o may_v also_o under_o this_o head_n take_v notice_n that_o as_o our_o saviour_n have_v never_o die_v at_o all_o as_o we_o observe_v before_o because_o he_o himself_o be_v perfect_o innocent_a if_o he_o have_v not_o by_o his_o own_o choice_n put_v himself_o in_o the_o stead_n and_o so_o expose_v can_v but_o judge_v to_o be_v best_a in_o the_o practice_n of_o other_o we_o shall_v lay_v the_o groundwork_n of_o all_o that_o be_v to_o follow_v upon_o the_o word_n of_o st._n peter_n in_o the_o his_o word_n so_o be_v we_o also_o that_o this_o word_n be_v make_v flesh_n and_o that_o by_o be_v so_o make_v he_o become_v to_o we_o after_o we_o be_v dead_a in_o trespass_n and_o sin_n the_o word_n of_o life_n from_o all_o which_o and_o a_o great_a deal_n more_o that_o may_v be_v offer_v both_o from_o reason_n and_o from_o revelation_n some_o of_o which_o thing_n we_o have_v already_o speak_v to_o and_o some_o of_o which_o we_o shall_v have_v occasion_n to_o speak_v to_o hereafter_o we_o may_v be_v not_o only_o inform_v but_o assure_v that_o the_o great_a merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n expiation_n make_v for_o sin_n by_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n do_v arise_v from_o hence_o that_o his_o divinity_n be_v personal_o unite_v to_o that_o body_n which_o undergo_v such_o death_n or_o that_o nothing_o less_o than_o the_o death_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n can_v expiate_v that_o death_n which_o the_o law_n have_v denounce_v against_o the_o sin_n of_o man._n but_o because_o these_o speak_v and_o 1._o by_o what_o have_v be_v say_v it_o appear_v plain_o that_o though_o our_o saviour_n make_v good_a the_o purchase_n of_o our_o redemption_n by_o his_o death_n and_o resurrection_n yet_o that_o such_o his_o purchase_n shall_v not_o be_v full_o make_v over_o to_o we_o till_o our_o own_o resurrection_n that_o he_o make_v good_a the_o purchase_n his_o resurrection_n be_v a_o demonstration_n for_o because_o the_o wage_n of_o sin_n be_v death_n and_o because_o he_o die_v for_o our_o sin_n and_o not_o for_o his_o own_o and_o because_o after_o such_o his_o death_n he_o rise_v till_o we_o rise_v from_o the_o dead_a that_o be_v till_o our_o own_o resurrection_n therefore_o it_o be_v as_o evident_a that_o till_o such_o our_o resurrection_n we_o be_v not_o put_v into_o the_o possession_n of_o such_o his_o purchase_n and_o therefore_o strict_o speak_v no_o man_n be_v he_o who_o he_o will_v be_v â—actually_o justify_v in_o this_o life_n for_o because_o every_o man_n that_o without_o all_o restraint_n but_o have_v by_o affliction_n fit_v such_o a_o curb_n for_o it_o which_o notwithstanding_o the_o saviour_n purchase_n be_v a_o irrefragable_a proof_n of_o his_o justice_n but_o though_o it_o be_v so_o do_v in_o no_o wise_n encroach_v upon_o such_o purchase_n but_o rather_o promote_v the_o design_n of_o it_o for_o a_o life_n continue_v in_o order_n to_o the_o performance_n of_o those_o condition_n by_o the_o performance_n of_o which_o man_n in_o and_z through_o his_o saviour_n may_v obtain_v salvation_n a_o life_n i_o say_v continue_v to_o such_o a_o the_o justice_n of_o the_o expiation_n do_v not_o contradict_v such_o their_o own_o position_n which_o maintain_v the_o justice_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n and_o passion_n one_o thing_n more_o i_o will_v remark_n and_o then_o i_o shall_v proceed_v and_o that_o be_v that_o because_o the_o objection_n under_o this_o head_n be_v only_o lay_v against_o the_o justice_n but_o not_o at_o all_o against_o the_o value_n merit_n or_o extensive_a influence_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n therefore_o i_o have_v precise_o stick_v to_o the_o matter_n of_o the_o present_a objection_n without_o mix_v other_o thing_n with_o it_o relate_v to_o the_o expiation_n that_o be_v i_o have_v here_o only_o assert_v the_o justice_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n in_o order_n to_o the_o expiation_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o mankind_n 2._o the_o second_o objection_n against_o our_o saviour_n expiation_n of_o our_o sin_n by_o his_o death_n stand_v thus_o and_o that_o be_v that_o though_o it_o shall_v be_v grant_v that_o he_o have_v power_n over_o his_o own_o life_n that_o he_o be_v willing_a to_o lay_v down_o that_o life_n and_o that_o god_n be_v willing_a to_o accept_v it_o yet_o all_o this_o will_v amount_v but_o to_o part_v of_o payment_n for_o first_o the_o death_n that_o we_o deserve_v by_o our_o sin_n be_v eternal_a but_o that_o which_o he_o suffer_v in_o our_o stead_n be_v but_o transient_a and_o temporal_a it_o be_v confess_v that_o as_o the_o socinian_o do_v deny_v the_o expiation_n so_o do_v they_o also_o a_o eternity_n of_o punishment_n but_o yet_o that_o do_v not_o at_o all_o take_v saviour_n be_v only_o the_o death_n of_o one_o so_o that_o if_o either_o we_o consider_v the_o extent_n of_o our_o gild_n or_o the_o malignity_n of_o it_o it_o will_v by_o no_o mean_n seem_v reasonable_a and_o therefore_o neither_o just_a that_o the_o single_a death_n of_o our_o saviour_n shall_v be_v look_v upon_o as_o a_o proportionats_n expiation_n of_o it_o nor_o indeed_o will_v it_o according_a to_o those_o who_o make_v the_o objection_n who_o though_o the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o in_o one_o place_n that_o in_o he_o dwell_v all_o the_o fullness_n of_o the_o godhead_n bodily_a and_o in_o another_o place_n that_o be_v in_o the_o form_n of_o god_n he_o think_v it_o no_o robbery_n to_o be_v equal_a
reckon_v a_o reward_n and_o if_o that_o obedience_n to_o which_o such_o reward_n be_v by_o the_o law_n assign_v be_v entire_o their_o own_o than_o that_o person_n who_o yet_o the_o scripture_n call_v their_o saviour_n can_v in_o no_o sense_n be_v true_o so_o call_v because_o in_o such_o case_n their_o salvation_n will_v be_v their_o own_o legal_a purchase_n as_o be_v the_o reward_n of_o their_o own_o obedience_n and_o last_o to_o suppose_v the_o saviour_n to_o be_v therefore_o their_o saviour_n because_o he_o bestow_v upon_o they_o salvation_n in_o consideration_n of_o a_o imperfect_a obedience_n that_o be_v a_o obedience_n which_o be_v so_o far_o from_o deserve_a salvation_n that_o it_o do_v indeed_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o a_o pardon_n be_v to_o suppose_v he_o to_o bestow_v the_o reward_n there_o where_o the_o law_n do_v not_o lay_v it_o that_o be_v upon_o supposition_n that_o such_o law_n be_v just_a it_o be_v to_o suppose_v he_o to_o be_v unjust_a from_o all_o which_o the_o conclusion_n at_o last_o must_v be_v that_o since_o their_o saviour_n must_v save_v they_o for_o their_o exact_a obedience_n to_o the_o law_n if_o he_o save_v they_o just_o and_o since_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o he_o do_v save_v they_o just_o though_o they_o have_v pay_v no_o such_o obedience_n that_o therefore_o the_o method_n in_o which_o he_o save_v they_o be_v by_o entitle_v they_o to_o a_o perfect_a obedience_n now_o how_o that_o be_v do_v will_v be_v our_o business_n to_o make_v out_o as_o also_o that_o the_o manner_n of_o his_o do_v it_o be_v just_a and_o righteous_a and_o therefore_o reasonable_a by_o which_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o our_o present_a way_n of_o reason_v do_v not_o want_v its_o weight_n though_o perhaps_o it_o may_v at_o present_a seem_v too_o light_a we_o too_o too_o apt_a to_o think_v that_o god_n be_v so_o too_o and_o in_o this_o case_n we_o be_v foolish_o incline_v to_o think_v he_o to_o be_v altogether_o such_o a_o one_o as_o ourselves_o and_o this_o make_v we_o to_o entertain_v soft_a and_o easy_a thought_n of_o his_o mercy_n and_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n to_o have_v no_o due_a regard_n to_o his_o justice_n but_o if_o we_o will_v but_o consider_v that_o both_o his_o mercy_n and_o his_o justice_n be_v guide_v by_o his_o holiness_n and_o that_o as_o he_o will_v not_o punish_v we_o without_o our_o demerit_n so_o neither_o will_v he_o reward_v we_o unless_o we_o become_v righteous_a i_o say_v if_o we_o will_v but_o serious_o consider_v this_o it_o may_v be_v a_o effectual_a mean_n to_o engage_v we_o to_o look_v better_o to_o our_o way_n lest_o whilst_o we_o think_v we_o be_v on_o our_o journey_n towards_o happiness_n we_o be_v find_v by_o mistake_n to_o tread_v in_o the_o broad_a road_n that_o lead_v to_o destruction_n 2._o from_o what_o have_v be_v say_v we_o may_v learn_v where_o to_o seek_v and_o to_o find_v what_o we_o do_v all_o natural_o desire_n and_o that_o be_v happiness_n i_o say_v we_o may_v learn_v that_o such_o our_o sin_n and_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o without_o return_v to_o the_o path_n of_o holiness_n we_o shall_v not_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o such_o expiation_n and_o that_o therefore_o we_o shall_v only_o enjoy_v the_o benefit_n of_o it_o when_o we_o be_v find_v in_o such_o path_n the_o most_o certain_a mean_n therefore_o of_o make_v ourselves_o happy_a will_v be_v by_o keep_v ourselves_o holy_a for_o so_o long_o as_o we_o do_v so_o we_o keep_v ourselves_o within_o the_o reach_n of_o the_o gospel-promises_a and_o though_o our_o holiness_n be_v not_o in_o this_o world_n perfect_a yet_o as_o we_o shall_v see_v short_o god_n will_v provide_v a_o way_n to_o make_v that_o and_o our_o happiness_n perfect_a in_o another_o world_n 3._o by_o what_o have_v be_v say_v we_o may_v learn_v how_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o we_o have_v no_o sincere_a and_o entire_a happiness_n in_o this_o world_n and_o that_o be_v because_o we_o have_v not_o here_o any_o sincere_a and_o entire_a holiness_n for_o be_v we_o free_v from_o all_o sin_n we_o shall_v be_v also_o free_v from_o all_o misery_n for_o we_o mistake_v if_o we_o do_v not_o think_v that_o cross_n losle_n pain_n sickness_n and_o death_n be_v all_o of_o they_o the_o effect_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o we_o may_v be_v sure_a that_o they_o therefore_o be_v so_o because_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o when_o our_o sin_n be_v do_v away_o all_o these_o misery_n shall_v be_v take_v away_o too_o no_o sin_n be_v mix_v with_o our_o life_n that_o spot_n stain_n and_o corrupt_v it_o and_o so_o affliction_n and_o misery_n come_v to_o be_v mix_v with_o it_o too_o and_o therefore_o be_v sin_n once_o banish_v out_o of_o this_o low_a world_n and_o true_a righteousness_n plant_v in_o its_o place_n be_v god_n will_v do_v 5._o last_o if_o no_o man_n obedience_n be_v perfect_a in_o this_o world_n than_o it_o will_v but_o ill_o become_v we_o to_o boast_v of_o our_o perfection_n here_o which_o in_o this_o latter_a age_n concern_v our_o saviour_n therefore_o lay_v aside_o at_o present_a all_o scheme_n of_o humane_a reason_v or_o contrivance_n we_o shall_v entire_o apply_v ourselves_o to_o they_o for_o such_o instruction_n take_v we_o notice_n therefore_o that_o they_o inform_v we_o that_o our_o saviour_n be_v deliver_v to_o death_n by_o the_o determinate_a counsel_n and_o foreknowledge_n of_o god_n so_o st._n peter_n tell_v we_o in_o the_o second_o of_o act_n and_o twenty_o three_o verse_n and_o so_o we_o be_v tell_v in_o other_o place_n from_o which_o we_o infer_v that_o the_o suffering_n and_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v a_o act_n of_o obedience_n to_o the_o will_n and_o counsel_n of_o god_n all_o which_o st._n paul_n give_v we_o in_o a_o few_o word_n but_o those_o very_a full_a to_o our_o present_a purpose_n when_o he_o tell_v we_o in_o the_o second_o to_o the_o philippian_n the_o eight_o verse_n that_o jesus_n christ_n be_v find_v in_o fashion_n as_o a_o man_n humble_v himself_o and_o become_v obedient_a unto_o death_n even_o the_o death_n of_o the_o cross_n since_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n death_n be_v at_o least_o one_o branch_n of_o his_o obedience_n to_o the_o will_n of_o his_o father_n that_o be_v since_o his_o obedience_n in_o the_o scripture-account_a be_v show_v in_o his_o death_n as_o well_o as_o in_o his_o life_n and_o therefore_o both_o when_o in_o conjunction_n be_v one_o and_o the_o selfsame_a thing_n i_o will_v desire_v to_o know_v upon_o what_o ground_n or_o by_o what_o warrant_n it_o can_v be_v imagine_v and_o much_o less_o defend_v that_o man_n be_v save_v for_o the_o sake_n of_o his_o death_n but_o that_o he_o be_v not_o save_v for_o the_o sake_n of_o his_o obedience_n and_o i_o will_v so_o much_o the_o rather_o insist_v upon_o this_o inquiry_n because_o though_o it_o shall_v be_v grant_v that_o our_o saviour_n death_n be_v meritorious_a of_o man_n everlasting_a happiness_n and_o that_o be_v the_o present_a case_n then_o if_o we_o must_v make_v a_o opposition_n between_o his_o death_n and_o his_o obedience_n and_o to_o ascribe_v man_n happiness_n to_o his_o death_n but_o not_o to_o his_o obedience_n do_v make_v such_o a_o opposition_n but_o i_o say_v if_o there_o must_v be_v a_o opposition_n make_v between_o they_o it_o seem_v much_o more_o agreeable_a to_o reason_n nay_o indeed_o to_o common_a sense_n to_o ascribe_v such_o merit_n to_o the_o obedience_n of_o his_o death_n than_o to_o his_o death_n for_o it_o be_v the_o voice_n of_o natural_a justice_n that_o duty_n and_o obedience_n may_v deserve_v a_o reward_n but_o it_o be_v a_o strain_n beyond_o conceit_n that_o punishment_n shall_v do_v so_o too_o for_o if_o that_o be_v allow_v than_o the_o suffering_n of_o punishment_n for_o the_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n may_v be_v just_o meritorious_a of_o a_o reward_n as_o well_o as_o obedience_n to_o the_o command_n of_o the_o law_n and_o so_o at_o long_o run_v it_o will_v come_v to_o the_o same_o event_n to_o break_v the_o law_n as_o to_o keep_v it_o but_o because_o that_o can_v be_v allow_v therefore_o if_o people_n will_v have_v a_o opposition_n in_o the_o case_n where_o the_o scripture_n have_v make_v none_o we_o shall_v rather_o ascribe_v man_n eternal_a happiness_n to_o the_o obedience_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n than_o to_o the_o death_n itself_o and_o then_o if_o our_o eternal_a happiness_n may_v be_v ascribe_v to_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n obedience_n in_o one_o case_n why_o may_v it_o not_o be_v so_o in_o more_o for_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n that_o a_o believer_n may_v be_v interest_v in_o the_o obedience_n of_o his_o death_n he_o may_v be_v interest_v in_o the_o obedience_n of_o his_o life_n too_o since_o then_o in_o the_o present_a case_n it_o be_v allow_v that_o a_o believer_n have_v his_o interest_n by_o imputation_n in_o the_o first_o case_n it_o will_v follow_v that_o he_o may_v and_o consider_v what_o have_v already_o be_v say_v that_o he_o must_v have_v it_o so_o in_o the_o last_o that_o be_v in_o a_o few_o word_n that_o the_o obedience_n of_o our_o saviour_n both_o in_o his_o life_n and_o in_o his_o death_n must_v purchase_v for_o man_n that_o happiness_n which_o by_o the_o tenor_n of_o justice_n be_v the_o proper_a and_o appropriate_v reward_n of_o obedience_n it_o be_v evident_a then_o that_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n for_o which_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n may_v belong_v to_o believer_n the_o merit_n of_o his_o obedience_n may_v do_v so_o too_o and_o that_o both_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o do_v therefore_o belong_v to_o they_o because_o they_o be_v impute_v to_o they_o our_o next_o business_n must_v be_v with_o those_o man_n who_o deny_v all_o imputation_n whatsoever_o and_o therefore_o neither_o allow_v the_o merit_n of_o his_o life_n or_o death_n to_o have_v any_o thing_n to_o do_v in_o the_o purchase_n of_o man_n salvation_n and_o because_o we_o have_v already_o and_o large_o discourse_v of_o the_o purchase_n make_v by_o his_o death_n our_o only_a business_n at_o present_a will_v be_v to_o inquire_v concern_v the_o purchase_n make_v by_o his_o obedience_n and_o because_o the_o man_n we_o have_v now_o to_o do_v with_o do_v deny_v all_o imputation_n of_o what_o our_o saviour_n do_v or_o suffer_v whatsoever_o therefore_o we_o shall_v lay_v down_o and_o attempt_v the_o proof_n of_o this_o follow_a proposition_n that_o that_o righteousness_n by_o which_o believer_n shall_v be_v judge_v and_o in_o consideration_n of_o which_o they_o shall_v obtain_v salvation_n at_o the_o resurrection_n and_o the_o great_a day_n shall_v be_v the_o obedience_n of_o their_o saviour_n while_o he_o live_v in_o the_o flesh_n impute_v to_o such_o believer_n 1._o in_o order_n to_o this_o we_o take_v notice_n in_o the_o first_o place_n that_o the_o scripture_n do_v tell_v we_o that_o all_o man_n shall_v be_v judge_v according_a to_o their_o work_n that_o be_v according_a to_o their_o obedience_n or_o disobedience_n in_o this_o life_n 2._o we_o lay_v it_o down_o in_o the_o second_o place_n that_o all_o those_o who_o shall_v be_v adjudge_v to_o enjoy_v a_o eternal_a happiness_n must_v in_o order_n to_o that_o bless_a sentence_n be_v first_o entitle_v to_o a_o perfect_a righteousness_n this_o we_o reckon_v be_v prove_v before_o 3._o we_o take_v notice_n in_o the_o three_o place_n that_o no_o man_n though_o never_o so_o righteous_a yet_o ever_o do_v do_v or_o shall_v arrive_v at_o a_o perfect_a righteousness_n in_o this_o life_n the_o question_n then_o that_o remain_v to_o be_v resolve_v be_v how_o any_o man_n shall_v come_v to_o be_v entitle_v to_o a_o perfect_a righteousness_n
that_o so_o he_o may_v be_v entitle_v to_o eternal_a happiness_n and_o because_o no_o man_n can_v warrantable_o say_v how_o he_o shall_v not_o be_v unless_o he_o do_v assign_v some_o way_n how_o he_o and_o second_o that_o as_o it_o be_v better_a accommodate_v to_o the_o rule_n of_o reason_n and_o to_o the_o law_n of_o justice_n so_o that_o it_o be_v so_o also_o to_o that_o account_n which_o the_o scripture_n give_v we_o of_o this_o matter_n 1._o for_o the_o obedience_n by_o which_o believer_n be_v to_o be_v judge_v at_o the_o last_o day_n be_v that_o obedience_n which_o be_v require_v of_o they_o in_o this_o world_n and_o according_o as_o man_n have_v behave_v themselves_o here_o so_o they_o shall_v receive_v the_o reward_n of_o such_o their_o behaviour_n there_o so_o st._n paul_n in_o the_o second_o to_o the_o corinthian_n chap._n 5._o ver_fw-la 10._o we_o shall_v all_o appear_v before_o the_o judgment-seat_n of_o christ_n that_o every_o one_o may_v receive_v the_o thing_n do_v in_o his_o body_n according_a to_o that_o he_o have_v do_v whether_o it_o be_v good_a or_o bad_a by_o which_o we_o may_v understand_v that_o the_o distribution_n to_o be_v make_v by_o justice_n upon_o a_o resurrection_n have_v a_o eye_n to_o the_o life_n of_o man_n before_o their_o death_n and_o from_o thence_o we_o may_v infer_v that_o they_o be_v not_o to_o be_v guide_v by_o a_o infuse_a holiness_n which_o do_v even_o by_o those_o who_o plead_v for_o it_o not_o take_v place_n till_o after_o the_o resurrection_n for_o it_o be_v agree_v on_o all_o hand_n that_o no_o man_n holiness_n be_v perfect_a in_o this_o life_n now_o it_o do_v not_o look_v altogether_o so_o rational_a nor_o so_o agreeable_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o justice_n or_o the_o revelation_n of_o scripture_n that_o a_o man_n shall_v be_v judge_v according_a to_o what_o he_o have_v do_v in_o the_o body_n before_o his_o death_n and_o yet_o that_o he_o shall_v by_o the_o last_o judicial_a sentence_n be_v everlasting_o reward_v for_o a_o holiness_n infuse_v by_o god_n after_o his_o resurrection_n and_o therefore_o if_o we_o will_v adhere_v to_o reason_n justice_n and_o revelation_n we_o must_v conclude_v that_o believer_n do_v not_o after_o this_o life_n obtain_v a_o everlasting_a happiness_n in_o consideration_n of_o such_o a_o infuse_a holiness_n 2._o and_o second_o we_o may_v do_v well_o to_o take_v notice_n that_o the_o obedience_n of_o our_o saviour_n to_o the_o law_n be_v the_o obedience_n which_o be_v require_v of_o man_n and_o which_o be_v also_o pay_v by_o man_n in_o this_o life_n and_o that_o because_o such_o his_o obedience_n be_v perfect_a therefore_o the_o reward_n assign_v by_o the_o law_n to_o obedience_n be_v in_o strictness_n of_o law_n and_o justice_n due_a to_o such_o his_o obedience_n if_o therefore_o his_o obedience_n while_o he_o be_v in_o the_o flesh_n may_v by_o any_o mean_n be_v so_o make_v over_o to_o believer_n as_o to_o be_v just_o account_v they_o then_o there_o can_v be_v no_o doubt_n but_o that_o their_o right_n to_o the_o reward_n appoint_v to_o such_o obedience_n will_v be_v just_a and_o good_a too_o and_o that_o it_o may_v be_v just_o account_v they_o we_o have_v as_o we_o believe_v make_v it_o good_a already_o but_o a_o holiness_n infuse_v by_o god_n after_o a_o resurrection_n can_v in_o no_o sense_n nor_o in_o any_o congruity_n be_v account_v and_o much_o less_o can_v it_o be_v a_o obedience_n pay_v by_o man_n while_o in_o the_o body_n to_o the_o law_n and_o therefore_o it_o can_v in_o any_o sense_n or_o in_o any_o congruity_n be_v such_o a_o holiness_n to_o which_o the_o reward_n allot_v only_o to_o obedience_n can_v belong_v and_o therefore_o neither_o can_v eternal_a happiness_n be_v bestow_v upon_o believer_n in_o consideration_n of_o such_o a_o infuse_a holiness_n in_o one_o word_n infuse_v holiness_n in_o order_n to_o man_n salvation_n do_v in_o no_o wise_n agree_v to_o that_o account_n which_o the_o scripture_n give_v we_o of_o the_o last_o judgement_n and_o though_o it_o pretend_v to_o magnify_v god_n mercy_n yet_o it_o take_v no_o care_n in_o the_o mean_a while_n to_o assert_v and_o vindicate_v his_o justice_n but_o make_v the_o whole_a process_n of_o that_o great_a assize_n to_o be_v arbitrary_a and_o illegal_a whilst_o it_o open_v a_o way_n to_o man_n happiness_n by_o a_o holiness_n which_o have_v nothing_o to_o do_v with_o the_o cause_n upon_o which_o alone_o his_o trial_n depend_v for_o a_o reward_n confer_v in_o another_o world_n upon_o a_o holiness_n infuse_v in_o another_o world_n do_v in_o no_o wise_a look_n back_o to_o or_o pass_v a_o judgement_n upon_o the_o life_n that_o be_v lead_v in_o this_o world_n but_o because_o we_o know_v assure_o and_o that_o by_o many_o express_a testimony_n of_o scripture_n that_o that_o will_v be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o last_o day_n therefore_o for_o that_o reason_n alone_o if_o yet_o there_o be_v no_o other_o we_o can_v ascribe_v a_o future_a happiness_n the_o happy_a just_a and_o final_a sentence_n of_o that_o day_n to_o such_o a_o infuse_a holiness_n no_o the_o holiness_n for_o which_o we_o be_v to_o be_v reward_v in_o a_o future_a life_n must_v be_v a_o obedience_n practise_v in_o this_o life_n the_o duty_n be_v lay_v upon_o man_n by_o the_o law_n here_o and_o the_o reward_n stand_v engage_v to_o the_o performance_n of_o such_o duty_n and_o if_o the_o righteousness_n of_o man_n at_o the_o resurrection_n be_v not_o a_o obedience_n pay_v to_o the_o law_n then_o when_o the_o law_n require_v such_o obedience_n the_o reward_n promise_v by_o the_o law_n can_v in_o no_o wise_n belong_v to_o such_o righteousness_n and_o therefore_o to_o fancy_n a_o reward_n for_o a_o holiness_n in_o which_o the_o law_n be_v not_o at_o all_o concern_v as_o it_o be_v not_o in_o a_o infuse_a holiness_n be_v to_o have_v no_o regard_n to_o the_o law_n at_o all_o for_o happiness_n bestow_v in_o consideration_n of_o a_o infuse_a holiness_n may_v as_o well_o be_v grant_v without_o the_o law_n as_o with_o it_o nay_o indeed_o much_o better_o because_o have_v there_o be_v no_o law_n at_o all_o than_o such_o a_o management_n have_v not_o affront_v the_o law_n whereas_o the_o law_n have_v be_v once_o settle_v to_o bestow_v the_o reward_n promise_v by_o the_o law_n upon_o a_o holiness_n which_o have_v no_o eye_n to_o the_o law_n as_o a_o infuse_a holiness_n have_v not_o be_v to_o slight_a and_o overlook_v the_o law_n for_o it_o allow_v the_o law_n to_o have_v nothing_o to_o do_v in_o the_o allotment_n of_o such_o a_o reward_n it_o may_v be_v plausible_o object_v in_o this_o place_n that_o while_o i_o vindicate_v the_o cause_n which_o i_o undertake_v against_o one_o adversary_n i_o give_v it_o up_o to_o another_o because_o while_o i_o assert_v that_o every_o man_n shall_v at_o the_o last_o day_n be_v judge_v according_a to_o his_o behaviour_n in_o this_o world_n i_o do_v in_o effect_n refer_v the_o reward_n that_o shall_v then_o be_v adjudge_v to_o believer_n to_o such_o their_o behaviour_n that_o be_v in_o the_o present_a case_n to_o their_o obedience_n in_o this_o world_n and_o that_o because_o i_o do_v so_o i_o therefore_o pull_v down_o with_o one_o hand_n that_o which_o before_o i_o have_v set_v up_o with_o another_o viz._n the_o imputation_n of_o their_o saviour_n righteousness_n in_o order_n to_o their_o salvation_n 1._o but_o this_o objection_n be_v ground_v upon_o a_o mistake_n which_o mistake_n be_v
use_v of_o at_o that_o time_n by_o the_o most_o celebrate_a law_n but_o also_o in_o consideration_n of_o our_o saviour_n purchase_n i_o say_v when_o we_o find_v thing_n so_o and_o that_o too_o in_o sense_n of_o justice_n in_o those_o law_n which_o be_v then_o most_o current_a in_o the_o world_n we_o can_v i_o be_o sure_a we_o can_v rational_o think_v so_o for_o why_o be_v we_o tell_v that_o we_o be_v buy_v with_o a_o price_n why_o be_v we_o tell_v that_o our_o saviour_n purchase_v we_o with_o his_o blood_n why_o be_v we_o tell_v that_o we_o be_v redeem_v not_o with_o corruptible_a thing_n as_o silver_n and_o gold_n but_o with_o the_o precious_a blood_n of_o christ_n but_o that_o our_o redemption_n and_o salvation_n do_v as_o to_o the_o justice_n and_o equity_n of_o it_o answer_n to_o those_o legal_a way_n of_o transfer_v of_o right_n from_o man_n to_o man_n for_o our_o redemption_n be_v purchase_v by_o our_o saviour_n so_o it_o be_v express_o word_v and_o by_o he_o therefore_o convey_v and_o make_v over_o to_o we_o because_o otherwise_o it_o can_v in_o no_o sense_n be_v call_v our_o redemption_n indeed_o a_o purchase_n do_v in_o the_o very_a import_n of_o the_o word_n imply_v the_o acquisition_n of_o a_o thing_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n and_o by_o so_o do_v do_v in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n imply_v also_o a_o legal_a power_n of_o make_v over_o such_o thing_n to_o another_o for_o he_o can_v only_o legal_o sell_v or_o otherwise_o give_v or_o convey_v who_o have_v a_o legal_a right_n in_o the_o thing_n sell_v give_v or_o convey_v and_o he_o can_v only_o legal_o purchase_v who_o pay_v a_o legal_a price_n when_o therefore_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o the_o scripture_n do_v so_o word_n the_o manner_n of_o god_n bestow_v and_o our_o receive_a salvation_n in_o and_o by_o our_o saviour_n as_o to_o do_v it_o in_o such_o term_n which_o be_v at_o that_o time_n term_n of_o the_o most_o celebrate_a law_n next_o to_o his_o own_o that_o ever_o of_o conveyance_n at_o that_o time_n familiar_a among_o mankind_n in_o such_o a_o way_n as_o be_v establish_v both_o by_o their_o own_o law_n and_o by_o their_o own_o practice_n in_o such_o a_o way_n that_o their_o best_a reason_n grant_v to_o they_o by_o himself_o have_v set_v on_o foot_n and_o that_o upon_o this_o account_n his_o way_n of_o do_v it_o so_o as_o be_v by_o he_o express_v and_o that_o too_o all_o along_o in_o that_o very_a book_n where_o he_o afford_v we_o the_o discovery_n of_o it_o be_v just_a equitable_a and_o legal_a i_o do_v but_o run_v over_o these_o thing_n and_o in_o a_o manner_n glance_n at_o they_o because_o i_o rather_o design_v to_o give_v a_o hint_n to_o other_o more_o able_a so_o to_o do_v than_o to_o pursue_v they_o myself_o for_o if_o a_o man_n well-studied_n in_o the_o civil_a law_n a_o law_n that_o will_v weigh_v with_o mankind_n so_o long_o as_o good_a and_o sound_a reason_n have_v a_o free_a passage_n in_o the_o world_n but_o i_o say_v will_v such_o a_o man_n so_o thorough_o acquaint_v himself_o with_o the_o new-covenant_n the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n in_o jesus_n christ_n as_o to_o be_v able_a exact_o to_o compare_v it_o with_o that_o law_n which_o be_v the_o business_n of_o his_o profession_n i_o do_v not_o at_o all_o question_n but_o that_o such_o a_o comparison_n judicious_o manage_v will_v go_v a_o great_a way_n in_o that_o intimate_v union_n that_o be_v between_o he_o and_o man_n by_o his_o take_n upon_o he_o the_o same_o flesh_n and_o blood_n with_o man_n and_o by_o afford_v to_o man_n the_o communication_n of_o his_o spirit_n a_o way_n be_v open_v as_o for_o the_o more_o congruous_a and_o equitable_a way_n of_o such_o conveyanee_n on_o the_o one_o side_n so_o on_o the_o other_o side_n for_o the_o more_o
