be_v to_o take_v heed_n of_o the_o leven_a of_o the_o pharisee_n and_o saducee_n matt._n 16._o marc._n 8._o which_o signify_v their_o evil_a doctrine_n and_o example_n they_o will_v needs_o understand_v as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v it_o because_o they_o be_v not_o provide_v of_o bread_n enough_o for_o the_o desert_n and_o so_o they_o be_v afraid_a they_o may_v want_v food_n and_o our_o lord_n reprehend_v this_o fault_n in_o they_o which_o they_o have_v add_v to_o the_o former_a say_v in_o this_o manner_n do_v you_o not_o understand_v and_o remember_v the_o five_o love_n of_o bread_n and_o the_o five_o thousand_o man_n which_o i_o sustain_v with_o they_o nor_o yet_o the_o seven_o love_n wherewith_o i_o feed_v four_o thousand_o man_n and_o thus_o reprove_v they_o as_o much_o as_o and_o while_o he_o speak_v of_o the_o fault_n he_o give_v hope_n of_o pardon_n and_o remedy_n so_o do_v saint_n chrysostome_n observe_v consider_v the_o reprehension_n which_o he_o give_v they_o all_o whatsoever_o be_v to_o happen_v to_o he_o there_o &_o that_o if_o he_o shall_v have_v a_o mind_n to_o free_v himself_o from_o his_o enemy_n they_o can_v fasten_v no_o hurt_n upon_o he_o and_o that_o towards_o such_o as_o come_v to_o he_o full_a of_o imperfection_n weakness_n and_o ignorance_n and_o we_o must_v receive_v after_o a_o sweet_a manner_n our_o neighbour_n when_o they_o come_v to_o we_o full_o of_o necessity_n &_o ignorance_n endure_v with_o a_o serene_a countenance_n their_o importunity_n &_o rudeness_n and_o give_v ear_n and_o satisfaction_n to_o their_o question_n and_o benign_o instruct_v they_o in_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v fit_a for_o they_o to_o be_v know_v by_o they_o according_a to_o the_o capacity_n of_o every_o one_o and_o remove_v the_o ignorance_n wherein_o they_o be_v &_o comfort_v they_o with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o truth_n and_o the_o hope_n of_o salvation_n and_o appease_v their_o conscience_n deliver_v they_o from_o vain_a scruple_n and_o fear_n to_o this_o do_v the_o apostle_n saint_n paul_n gal._n 6._o advice_n in_o these_o word_n my_o brethren_n if_o any_o of_o you_o be_v surprise_v by_o any_o sin_n as_o it_o happen_v to_o they_o who_o sin_n out_o of_o passion_n or_o weakness_n orignorance_n and_o not_o out_o of_o mere_a malice_n and_o who_o be_v as_o it_o be_v prevent_v and_o surprise_v by_o that_o sin_n into_o which_o they_o such_o i_o say_v have_v fall_v you_o who_o be_v spiritual_a man_n and_o live_v according_a to_o spirit_n that_o be_v according_a to_o the_o true_a and_o spiritual_a understanding_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n instruct_v and_o inform_v well_o such_o a_o kind_n of_o sinner_n as_o this_o and_o do_v it_o not_o with_o sharpness_n &_o rigour_n but_o with_o sweetness_n and_o gentleness_n both_o of_o word_n and_o deed_n wherein_o true_a benignity_n consist_v and_o for_o this_o purpose_n let_v every_o one_o consider_v himself_o and_o reflect_v well_o upon_o his_o own_o weakness_n and_o danger_n and_o how_o subject_a he_o be_v to_o fall_v as_o the_o other_o do_v and_o peradventure_o worse_o and_o from_o hence_o he_o will_v grow_v to_o instruct_v and_o correct_v other_o with_o the_o sweetness_n of_o mercy_n and_o benignity_n and_o not_o with_o too_o much_o rigour_n and_o severity_n lest_o himself_o also_o grow_v both_o to_o be_v tempt_v and_o conquer_v this_o in_o substance_n be_v deliver_v by_o the_o apostle_n and_o with_o great_a reason_n he_o wish_v he_o who_o treat_v such_o as_o have_v fall_v into_o sin_n without_o mercy_n and_o benignity_n that_o he_o look_v well_o to_o himself_o lest_o he_o be_v tempt_v and_o overcome_v for_o in_o very_a truth_n it_o be_v the_o punishment_n which_o he_o deserve_v and_o which_o ordinary_o almighty_a god_n inflict_v upon_o such_o in_o great_a ignorance_n and_o by_o reason_n of_o their_o much_o rudeness_n make_v little_a profit_n of_o the_o great_a light_n of_o doctrine_n which_o be_v propound_v to_o they_o and_o of_o that_o so_o admirable_a example_n of_o the_o life_n of_o christ_n our_o lord_n which_o they_o have_v before_o their_o eye_n let_v we_o produce_v some_o example_n to_o prove_v this_o truth_n our_o lord_n have_v already_o wrought_v that_o illustrious_a miracle_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o his_o disciple_n matt_n 15_o of_o feed_v five_o thousand_o man_n with_o five_o loaf_n of_o bread_n and_o short_o after_o another_o necessity_n offer_v itself_o wherein_o our_o lord_n be_v please_v to_o feed_v four_o thousand_o man_n with_o seven_o loaf_n and_o have_v already_o tell_v his_o disciple_n that_o he_o will_v not_o permit_v those_o troop_n of_o man_n &_o woman_n to_o return_v home_o to_o their_o house_n till_o he_o have_v feed_v they_o they_o conceive_v it_o to_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o so_o much_o difficulty_n that_o as_o if_o it_o have_v indeed_o be_v impossible_a for_o our_o lord_n to_o do_v they_o say_v where_o can_v we_o be_v able_a to_o procure_v in_o this_o desert_n such_o a_o quantity_n of_o bread_n as_o will_v be_v necessary_a for_o the_o feed_n of_o such_o a_o multitude_n what_o a_o great_a imperfection_n be_v this_o in_o they_o and_o what_o a_o strange_a rudeness_n and_o blindenes_n of_o heart_n that_o have_v see_v with_o their_o own_o eye_n that_o our_o lord_n have_v wrought_v so_o many_o like_a and_o great_a miracle_n than_o that_o they_o do_v not_o yet_o believe_v and_o confide_v so_o much_o in_o he_o as_o that_o with_o so_o few_o loaf_n he_o be_v able_a to_o feed_v so_o much_o people_n and_o especial_o consider_v that_o he_o have_v declare_v himself_o to_o have_v a_o will_n to_o do_v it_o and_o that_o he_o have_v wrought_v the_o like_a in_o the_o self_n same_o case_n some_o few_o day_n before_o and_o yet_o these_o disciple_n make_v he_o answer_v with_o so_o little_a faith_n and_o indeed_o with_o so_o little_a good_a manner_n our_o most_o bless_a lord_n do_v yet_o treat_v they_o with_o so_o great_a tenderness_n and_o sweetness_n that_o he_o blame_v or_o reprove_v they_o not_o nor_o show_v himself_o a_o whit_n disgu_v or_o offend_v for_o the_o little_a account_n and_o estimation_n which_o they_o show_v themselves_o to_o have_v of_o his_o power_n but_o pass_v by_o all_o this_o he_o ask_v they_o how_o many_o loaf_n they_o have_v and_o they_o say_v that_o they_o have_v seven_o he_o command_v the_o troop_n to_o sit_v down_o and_o he_o give_v they_o all_o to_o eat_v of_o those_o seven_o loaf_n and_o he_o make_v the_o apostle_n gather_v up_o seven_o basket_n full_a of_o the_o overplus_n and_o in_o this_o sort_n he_o do_v by_o that_o action_n of_o his_o let_v they_o see_v their_o rudeness_n and_o he_o remove_v their_o ignorance_n &_o settle_v they_o fast_o in_o their_o faith_n and_o this_o be_v so_o great_a a_o fault_n in_o the_o apostle_n that_o the_o confess_v and_o publish_v of_o it_o themselves_o after_o the_o come_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v a_o act_n of_o great_a humility_n in_o they_o and_o the_o suffering_n and_o cure_v it_o by_o our_o lord_n with_o so_o great_a pity_n and_o mercy_n be_v admirable_a benignity_n in_o he_o so_o say_v saint_n chrysostome_n it_o be_v worthy_a of_o great_a admiration_n to_o see_v the_o apostle_n so_o great_a friend_n to_o the_o truth_n as_o that_o themselves_o who_o write_v the_o evangelicall_a history_n will_v not_o cover_v those_o so_o great_a fault_n of_o their_o own_o for_o it_o be_v no_o little_a one_o that_o they_o can_v so_o soon_o forget_v that_o miracle_n which_o our_o lord_n have_v wrought_v so_o late_o before_o in_o the_o multiplication_n of_o the_o five_o loaf_n of_o bread_n and_o theophylact_v add_v thus_o it_o be_v not_o reason_n that_o they_o shall_v so_o soon_o have_v forget_v that_o miracle_n whereby_o our_o lord_n have_v give_v food_n in_o the_o and_o another_o abase_v one_o honour_v and_o another_o dishonour_v his_o neighbour_n from_o hence_o it_o grow_v that_o the_o miserable_a heart_n which_o love_v praise_n be_v now_o cheerful_a and_o then_o sad_a now_o refresh_v &_o they_o dismay_v and_o never_o do_v enjoy_v strength_n or_o rest_n on_o the_o other_o a_o man_n who_o care_v not_o for_o the_o praise_n of_o man_n but_o despise_v and_o avoide_v they_o and_o for_o his_o part_n desire_v only_o to_o be_v approve_v and_o praise_v by_o almighty_a god_n who_o judgement_n be_v right_a and_o upon_o who_o approbation_n and_o praise_n our_o salvation_n depend_v and_o who_o content_v himself_o with_o this_o testimony_n do_v proceed_v like_o a_o just_a man_n who_o love_v true_a justice_n and_o not_o vanity_n and_o so_o keep_v his_o heart_n quiet_a and_o firm_o set_v upon_o goodness_n because_o he_o rest_v himself_o upon_o god_n who_o be_v not_o subject_a to_o any_o change_n so_o say_v saint_n chrysostome_n the_o wicked_a man_n be_v delight_v with_o the_o praise_n of_o man_n and_o though_o he_o have_v not_o the_o virtue_n for_o which_o he_o be_v praise_v yet_o he_o hold_v his_o peace_n and_o be_v glad_a of_o it_o but_o the_o the_o praise_n of_o man_n and_o so_o nothing_o make_v they_o so_o firm_a and_o constant_a and_o strong_a as_o the_o contempt_n of_o all_o the_o honour_n and_o praise_n of_o this_o world_n but_o now_o since_o it_o be_v not_o lawful_a to_o like_v the_o praise_n of_o man_n for_o his_o own_o honour_n and_o temporal_a comfort_n let_v we_o see_v whether_o it_o be_v lawful_a for_o he_o to_o like_v and_o desire_v they_o for_o the_o animate_v and_o encourage_v himself_o thereby_o to_o the_o exercise_n of_o virtue_n we_o therefore_o say_v first_o that_o this_o may_v be_v lawful_a in_o some_o case_n and_o with_o some_o moderation_n as_o namely_o for_o a_o man_n who_o be_v in_o affliction_n or_o desolation_n to_o desire_v that_o man_n may_v comfort_v he_o put_v he_o in_o mind_n of_o the_o good_a he_o have_v do_v or_o of_o the_o fruit_n which_o have_v follow_v upon_o his_o action_n or_o by_o his_o example_n or_o instruction_n that_o so_o he_o may_v not_o be_v dismay_v with_o his_o affliction_n and_o if_o he_o be_v dismay_v that_o he_o may_v take_v heart_n not_o admit_v of_o that_o praise_n with_o any_o meaning_n to_o dwell_v therein_o but_o as_o a_o receipt_n of_o physic_n wherewith_o to_o cure_v his_o infirmity_n and_o weakness_n and_o to_o induce_v himself_o the_o better_a to_o serve_v god_n for_o what_o god_n be_v and_o for_o the_o accomplishment_n of_o his_o holy_a will_n as_o king_n ezechias_n do_v who_o be_v in_o the_o extremity_n of_o sickness_n and_o much_o afflict_v with_o the_o approach_n of_o death_n do_v for_o the_o increase_n of_o his_o confidence_n in_o god_n and_o for_o the_o comfort_n of_o his_o soul_n and_o the_o redress_n of_o his_o desolation_n commemorate_v to_o god_n himself_o the_o good_a deed_n he_o have_v do_v say_v thus_o i_o beseech_v thou_o o_o lord_n remember_v how_o i_o have_v live_v and_o converse_v before_o thou_o with_o truth_n and_o without_o all_o hypocrisy_n or_o dissimulation_n &_o how_o in_o all_o thing_n which_o concern_v thy_o religion_n i_o have_v serve_v thou_o with_o the_o entire_a affection_n of_o my_o heart_n not_o honour_v any_o other_o god_n but_o thou_o who_o be_v the_o true_a god_n and_o how_o i_o have_v perform_v these_o good_a work_n which_o thou_o have_v command_v in_o this_o sort_n the_o good_a afflict_a king_n acknowledge_v that_o all_o the_o good_a thing_n which_o he_o have_v do_v be_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n and_o refer_v they_o all_o to_o he_o reduce_v they_o to_o his_o memory_n and_o present_v they_o before_o almighty_a god_n not_o rest_v and_o rely_v upon_o they_o but_o upon_o the_o mercy_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n by_o mean_n whereof_o he_o have_v wrought_v they_o &_o he_o do_v it_o to_o the_o end_n that_o he_o may_v erect_v himself_o to_o some_o good_a hope_n and_o to_o comfort_v his_o sad_a heart_n and_o so_o it_o may_v be_v lawful_a for_o a_o afflict_a man_n with_o the_o same_o intention_n and_o to_o the_o same_o end_n to_o like_v and_o accept_v of_o be_v assist_v
