approve_v their_o choice_n he_o be_v the_o best_a king_n and_o the_o best_a man_n that_o we_o read_v of_o in_o the_o whole_a catalogue_n of_o the_o king_n of_o judah_n he_o perform_v his_o duty_n both_o to_o god_n and_o his_o people_n so_o very_o well_o it_o will_v have_v be_v a_o shame_n to_o his_o subject_n if_o they_o have_v not_o requite_v he_o by_o pay_v he_o all_o that_o observance_n and_o duty_n to_o which_o he_o can_v have_v any_o pretence_n but_o although_o he_o may_v be_v a_o example_n to_o the_o best_a of_o king_n the_o scripture_n give_v he_o this_o eulogy_n and_o like_v unto_o he_o there_o be_v no_o king_n before_o he_o that_o turn_v to_o the_o lord_n with_o all_o his_o heart_n and_o with_o all_o his_o soul_n and_o with_o all_o his_o might_n according_a to_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n neither_o after_o he_o arise_v there_o any_o like_o he_o yet_o from_o he_o we_o may_v best_o learn_v what_o a_o intolerable_a mischief_n a_o wicked_a king_n be_v for_o though_o josiah_n be_v so_o very_o good_a yet_o there_o be_v a_o old_a arrere_n of_o his_o grandfather_n manasseh_n that_o all_o his_o virtue_n and_o goodness_n can_v not_o clear_v for_o notwithstanding_o the_o lord_n turn_v not_o from_o the_o fierceness_n of_o his_o great_a wrath_n wherewith_o his_o anger_n be_v kindle_v against_o judah_n because_o of_o all_o the_o provocation_n that_o manasseh_n have_v provoke_v he_o withal_o and_o the_o lord_n say_v i_o will_v remove_v judah_n out_o of_o my_o sight_n as_o i_o have_v remove_v israel_n and_o will_v cast_v off_o this_o city_n jerusalem_n which_o i_o have_v choose_v and_o the_o house_n of_o which_o i_o say_v my_o name_n shall_v be_v there_o 2_o king_n 23.26_o 27._o therefore_o what_o reason_n have_v both_o church_n and_o state_n to_o deprecate_v such_o a_o king_n as_o will_v infallible_o entail_v ruin_n on_o both_o for_o you_o see_v that_o god_n house_n even_o that_o house_n that_o he_o have_v choose_v to_o set_v his_o name_n there_o shall_v be_v involve_v in_o the_o common_a destruction_n therefore_o be_v i_o to_o add_v a_o new_a clause_n to_o the_o litany_n it_o shall_v be_v from_o such_o a_o king_n as_o manasseh_n good_a lord_n deliver_v we_o but_o above_o all_o we_o ought_v to_o be_v fearful_a of_o and_o pray_v against_o a_o idolatrous_a and_o bloody_a king_n for_o those_o be_v the_o two_o crime_n with_o which_o manasseh_n be_v particular_o charge_v and_o which_o hasten_v the_o captivity_n of_o judah_n and_o consequent_o shorten_v the_o life_n and_o reign_n of_o the_o good_a and_o belove_a josiah_n to_o who_o it_o be_v particular_o promise_v as_o a_o blessing_n that_o he_o shall_v not_o live_v to_o see_v the_o ruin_n and_o desolation_n that_o be_v to_o be_v bring_v on_o the_o nation_n after_o his_o death_n after_o which_o the_o people_n of_o the_o land_n take_v jehoabas_n the_o son_n of_o josiah_n and_o make_v he_o king_n in_o his_o father_n stead_n in_o jerusalem_n 2_o chron._n 36.1_o and_o 2_o king_n 23.30_o but_o although_o he_o inherit_v his_o father_n kingdom_n it_o seem_v he_o do_v not_o his_o virtue_n for_o it_o follow_v in_o ver_fw-la 32._o that_o he_o do_v evil_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o his_o reign_n be_v very_o short_a for_o pharaoh_n necho_n make_v he_o a_o prisoner_n and_o carry_v he_o into_o egypt_n and_o make_v his_o elder_a brother_n jehoiakim_n king_n in_o his_o stead_n in_o who_o day_n the_o king_n of_o babylon_n first_o come_v up_o against_o judah_n and_o after_o his_o death_n jehoiachin_n succeed_v who_o nabuchadnezzar_n carry_v to_o babylon_n and_o make_v zedekiah_n king_n in_o who_o the_o succession_n be_v quite_o invert_v for_o he_o be_v uncle_n and_o not_o in_o the_o direct_a line_n and_o the_o monarchy_n also_o end_v with_o he_o i_o shall_v here_o have_v concude_v this_o part_n of_o my_o discourse_n but_o that_o i_o can_v omit_v one_o observation_n and_o that_o be_v that_o there_o be_v several_a king_n of_o judah_n alive_a at_o the_o same_o time_n it_o be_v certain_a two_o jeconiah_n and_o zedekiah_n but_o for_o any_o thing_n i_o know_v there_o may_v be_v three_o for_o we_o do_v not_o read_v of_o the_o death_n of_o jehoahas_n who_o be_v carry_v prisoner_n into_o egypt_n and_o by_o his_o age_n i_o be_o sure_a he_o may_v survive_v zedekiah_n carry_v to_o babylon_n for_o he_o be_v but_o twenty_o three_o year_n old_a when_o he_o begin_v to_o reign_v and_o his_o own_o reign_n with_o all_o the_o three_o king_n that_o succeed_v he_o do_v not_o make_v twenty_o three_o year_n more_o before_o the_o captivity_n but_o now_o i_o will_v fain_o know_v what_o the_o royalist_n of_o our_o age_n will_v do_v in_o such_o a_o case_n and_o which_o of_o the_o three_o they_o will_v own_v for_o there_o be_v great_a variety_n one_o set_v up_o by_o the_o people_n the_o second_o as_o heir_n to_o he_o who_o the_o king_n of_o egypt_n have_v set_v up_o and_o the_o three_o set_v up_o by_o the_o king_n of_o babylon_n but_o i_o do_v not_o find_v that_o the_o jew_n have_v any_o such_o scruple_n at_o that_o time_n but_o always_o obey_v they_o which_o be_v in_o possession_n as_o long_o as_o they_o be_v so_o let_v they_o be_v set_v up_o by_o who_o they_o will_v and_o the_o scripture_n give_v they_o the_o same_o epithet_n they_o be_v all_o call_v king_n without_o ever_o dispute_v their_o title_n nor_o be_v the_o people_n reprove_v for_o obey_v zedekiah_n although_o they_o know_v that_o jehoiachin_n who_o have_v certain_o the_o better_a title_n and_o have_v also_o reign_v as_o king_n be_v alive_a but_o although_o the_o people_n be_v not_o rebuke_v for_o submit_v to_o zedekiah_n who_o nebuchanezzar_n have_v set_v over_o they_o yet_o zedekiah_n be_v for_o not_o obey_v the_o king_n of_o babylon_n to_o who_o he_o have_v past_o his_o word_n that_o he_o will_v so_o that_o we_o may_v see_v that_o king_n be_v oblige_v by_o their_o oath_n and_o promise_n as_o well_o as_o other_o men._n which_o bring_v i_o to_o my_o three_o particular_a i_o be_v to_o prove_v which_o be_v that_o at_o the_o first_o set_v up_o of_o king_n among_o the_o jew_n their_o power_n be_v not_o absolute_a but_o that_o they_o be_v oblige_v to_o certain_a covenant_n and_o condition_n and_o although_o i_o will_v not_o pretend_v to_o prove_v it_o of_o every_o individual_a king_n yet_o if_o i_o can_v do_v it_o of_o the_o first_o and_o second_o and_o also_o the_o solemn_a repeat_n of_o it_o after_o a_o interregnum_fw-la i_o shall_v hope_v i_o have_v do_v all_o that_o can_v be_v expect_v from_o i_o for_o whoever_o succeed_v to_o a_o crown_n be_v suppose_v to_o take_v it_o on_o the_o same_o condition_n his_o predecessor_n have_v it_o which_o it_o will_v be_v superfluous_a for_o the_o story_n to_o repeat_v every_o time_n iii_o and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v not_o make_v a_o long_a preface_n to_o a_o point_n that_o i_o hope_v so_o easy_o to_o dispatch_v for_o i_o suppose_v that_o a_o few_o plain_a scripture-proof_n will_v for_o i_o be_o sure_a they_o ought_v to_o go_v far_o than_o a_o long_a rhetorical_a discourse_n and_o how_o few_o instance_n soever_o i_o can_v bring_v yet_o i_o shall_v begin_v at_o the_o springhead_n and_o make_v the_o first_o king_n saul_n and_o david_n witness_n to_o the_o truth_n of_o what_o i_o now_o assert_v and_o prove_v that_o such_o a_o compact_a and_o agreement_n between_o the_o prince_n and_o people_n be_v the_o very_a cornerstone_n of_o monarchy_n itself_o and_o that_o i_o may_v do_v this_o the_o more_o full_o and_o clear_o i_o must_v beg_v my_o reader_n be_v pardon_n though_o i_o carry_v he_o so_o far_o back_o as_o the_o inauguration_n of_o saul_n the_o first_o king_n of_o israel_n but_o i_o shall_v not_o tire_v his_o patience_n so_o much_o as_o to_o repeat_v all_o that_o i_o have_v already_o say_v of_o samuel_n displeasure_n at_o the_o people_n for_o reject_v god_n and_o defire_v a_o man_n to_o be_v set_v over_o they_o for_o their_o king_n 1_o sam._n 10.19_o and_o though_o samuel_n to_o terrify_v they_o have_v represent_v the_o king_n they_o desire_v rather_o in_o the_o shape_n of_o a_o tyrant_n that_o will_v destroy_v and_o ruin_v than_o of_o a_o prince_n that_o be_v to_o defend_v and_o save_v they_o 1_o sam._n 8._o from_o the_o 11_o the_o to_o the_o 19_o the_o yet_o see_v they_o will_v not_o be_v discourage_v but_o still_o persist_v in_o their_o resolution_n nay_o but_o we_o will_v have_v a_o king_n over_o we_o god_n be_v so_o merciful_a to_o they_o as_o to_o give_v rule_n to_o this_o unruly_a king_n that_o samuel_n have_v describe_v as_o i_o think_v we_o may_v safe_o collect_v from_o 1_o sam._n 10.25_o then_o samuel_n tell_v the_o people_n the_o manner_n of_o the_o kingdom_n and_o write_v it_o in_o a_o book_n
have_v establish_v a_o heptarchy_n among_o we_o yet_o they_o find_v they_o be_v too_o many_o for_o this_o small_a plat_v of_o ground_n for_o they_o be_v always_o encroach_a and_o fight_v with_o one_o another_o wherefore_o grow_v weary_a of_o that_o horn_n tell_v you_o in_o his_o mirror_n chap._n 1._o how_o they_o choose_v themselves_o one_o king_n to_o maintain_v and_o defend_v their_o person_n and_o good_n in_o peace_n by_o rule_n of_o law_n and_o make_v he_o swear_v that_o he_o will_v be_v obedient_a to_o suffer_v right_o as_o well_o as_o his_o people_n shall_v be_v and_o these_o be_v the_o term_n on_o the_o which_o our_o first_o monarch_n proper_o so_o call_v for_o true_o before_o they_o do_v not_o deserve_v the_o name_n of_o king_n for_o i_o be_o sure_a their_o power_n be_v not_o so_o great_a or_o perhaps_o so_o extensive_a as_o that_o of_o a_o lord_n mayor_n of_o london_n do_v ascend_v the_o throne_n and_o that_o the_o same_o term_n and_o condition_n be_v agree_v to_o and_o confirm_v by_o his_o successor_n may_v be_v easy_o prove_v will_v it_o not_o take_v up_o too_o much_o time_n but_o yet_o king_n edgar_n think_v it_o worth_a their_o while_n to_o collect_v and_o transcribe_v they_o and_o we_o find_v william_n the_o first_o be_v willing_a to_o wave_v his_o title_n of_o conqueror_n and_o by_o confirm_v the_o ancient_a right_n and_o privilege_n of_o the_o people_n be_v receive_v as_o their_o legal_a not_o their_o conqueror_n or_o arbitrary_a governor_n for_o although_o conquest_n may_v give_v one_o power_n it_o can_v of_o its_o self_n give_v one_o right_o to_o rule_v a_o nation_n for_o the_o consent_n of_o the_o people_n either_o tacit_a that_o be_v when_o they_o like_o their_o new_a governor_n so_o well_o that_o they_o never_o offer_v to_o resist_v but_o quiet_o comply_v and_o submit_v to_o his_o government_n receive_v the_o advantage_n of_o his_o protection_n and_o law_n and_o pay_v he_o in_o return_n what_o his_o law_n require_v or_o explicit_a that_o be_v when_o they_o make_v condition_n and_o term_n for_o themselves_o before_o they_o will_v submit_v be_v so_o necessary_a that_o no_o king_n can_v be_v long_o safe_a without_o it_o and_o since_o the_o way_n of_o explicit_a contract_n have_v be_v the_o general_a method_n of_o our_o predecessor_n therefore_o whatever_o objection_n be_v make_v against_o that_o know_a saying_n of_o bracton_n lex_fw-la facit_fw-la regem_fw-la it_o will_v hold_v good_a in_o law_n and_o i_o very_o believe_v none_o of_o our_o king_n will_v exchange_v the_o title_n that_o the_o law_n give_v they_o to_o the_o crown_n for_o all_o the_o evidence_n the_o clergy_n can_v furnish_v they_o with_o out_o of_o the_o gospel_n to_o prove_v their_o power_n absolute_a and_o arbitrary_a therefore_o since_o it_o be_v the_o law_n that_o must_v tell_v we_o with_o what_o power_n our_o king_n be_v invest_v perhaps_o bracton_n may_v give_v we_o as_o good_a a_o account_n of_o it_o as_o any_o body_n when_o he_o say_v the_o whole_a power_n of_o the_o king_n of_o england_n be_v to_o do_v good_a and_o not_o to_o do_v hurt_v which_o he_o explain_v by_o add_v nor_o can_v he_o do_v anything_o as_o a_o king_n but_o what_o he_o can_v legal_o do_v lib._n 3._o c._n 9_o from_o whence_o i_o suppose_v the_o old_a maxim_n that_o the_o king_n can_v do_v no_o wrong_n first_o spring_v for_o while_o he_o act_v by_o law_n it_o be_v evident_a he_o can_v and_o for_o what_o he_o do_v against_o law_n he_o do_v not_o do_v it_o as_o a_o king._n nay_o the_o same_o bracton_n seem_v to_o think_v that_o he_o actual_o unk_v himself_o by_o it_o for_o he_o say_v non_fw-fr est_fw-fr enim_fw-la rex_fw-la ubi_fw-la dominatur_fw-la voluntas_fw-la &_o non_fw-la lex_fw-la by_o which_o certain_o he_o do_v not_o mean_a that_o he_o cease_v to_o be_v a_o good_a king_n for_o that_o he_o need_v not_o have_v be_v at_o the_o pain_n of_o tell_v we_o for_o our_o own_o sad_a experience_n will_v soon_o have_v convince_v we_o of_o it_o but_o have_v tell_v we_o before_o that_o he_o can_v do_v nothing_o as_o a_o king_n but_o what_o he_o can_v legal_o do_v without_o all_o doubt_n his_o meaning_n be_v that_o we_o be_v not_o to_o look_v upon_o he_o nor_o obey_v he_o as_o our_o king_n when_o he_o command_v any_o thing_n contrary_a to_o law._n but_o there_o have_v be_v so_o much_o write_v on_o this_o subject_a already_o that_o as_o it_o will_v be_v hard_a to_o say_v any_o thing_n new_a upon_o it_o so_o it_o will_v be_v both_o tedious_a and_o superfluous_a to_o repeat_v the_o old_a but_o i_o suppose_v i_o may_v safe_o take_v for_o grant_v what_o all_o side_n allow_v and_o that_o be_v that_o we_o be_v a_o limit_a monarchy_n for_o all_o must_v own_v that_o if_o our_o king_n act_n as_o they_o ought_v to_o do_v they_o must_v keep_v within_o the_o boundary_n of_o the_o law_n and_o where_o the_o regal_a authority_n be_v circumscribe_v and_o the_o king_n power_n as_o king_n have_v its_o non_fw-la ultra_fw-la yet_o that_o the_o people_n obedience_n shall_v know_v no_o measure_n but_o be_v extend_v ad_fw-la infinitum_fw-la be_v to_o i_o i_o must_v confess_v a_o very_a unintelligible_a doctrine_n for_o if_o we_o be_v equal_o oblige_v to_o render_v obedience_n either_o active_a or_o passive_a to_o the_o king_n command_v which_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o law_n as_o we_o be_v to_o those_o which_o be_v consistent_a with_o it_o and_o authorize_v by_o it_o i_o must_v crave_v leave_n to_o say_v that_o law_n be_v a_o very_a superfluous_a because_o a_o very_a insignificant_a thing_n nay_o certain_o if_o the_o case_n be_v so_o it_o be_v much_o better_o be_v take_v away_o for_o perhaps_o it_o may_v betray_v some_o poor_a ignorant_a people_n who_o it_o be_v possible_a may_v think_v it_o give_v they_o some_o right_n when_o indeed_o it_o give_v they_o none_o but_o if_o they_o shall_v think_v fit_a to_o make_v any_o distinction_n between_o the_o obedience_n we_o be_v to_o render_v to_o the_o king_n when_o he_o speak_v like_o a_o king_n by_o the_o consent_n and_o authority_n of_o the_o law_n and_o what_o we_o be_v to_o pay_v he_o when_o he_o speak_v in_o his_o personal_a and_o private_a capacity_n if_o i_o say_v they_o shall_v think_v fit_a to_o make_v any_o distinction_n in_o the_o case_n i_o shall_v desire_v they_o to_o set_v the_o boundary_n for_o true_o according_a to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o passive_a obedience_n in_o the_o latitude_n they_o now_o take_v it_o i_o know_v no_o body_n else_o that_o can_v fix_v they_o but_o i_o will_v fain_o know_v of_o they_o whether_o there_o be_v not_o such_o a_o rule_n in_o divinity_n that_o where_o there_o be_v no_o law_n there_o be_v no_o transgression_n and_o if_o no_o transgression_n certain_o no_o obligation_n to_o undergo_v any_o penalty_n for_o the_o same_o text_n tell_v we_o in_o the_o same_o verse_n rom._n 4.15_o that_o the_o law_n work_v wrath_n that_o be_v that_o the_o law_n oblige_v to_o the_o punishment_n threaten_v to_o the_o breaker_n of_o it_o but_o where_o there_o be_v no_o law_n there_o be_v no_o transgression_n and_o consequent_o no_o wrath_n and_o if_o they_o will_v please_v to_o apply_v this_o to_o the_o point_n in_o hand_n i_o think_v i_o need_v not_o add_v any_o thing_n to_o it_o but_o proceed_v to_o show_v that_o beside_o the_o general_a and_o implicit_a obligation_n that_o our_o law_n lay_v upon_o all_o that_o have_v any_o share_n in_o the_o government_n or_o any_o interest_n in_o the_o state_n our_o king_n have_v a_o more_o particular_a and_o actual_a obligation_n to_o govern_v by_o they_o and_o to_o submit_v to_o they_o for_o that_o august_n ceremony_n of_o their_o coronation_n be_v not_o intend_v only_o to_o please_v and_o amuse_v the_o vulgar_a with_o the_o gaiety_n and_o splendour_n of_o the_o show_n but_o be_v institute_v for_o wise_a end_n that_o by_o the_o magnificence_n and_o solemnity_n of_o the_o action_n it_o may_v fix_v upon_o the_o heart_n both_o of_o king_n and_o people_n the_o remembrance_n of_o those_o vow_n and_o engagement_n they_o at_o that_o time_n mutual_o make_v to_o one_o another_o and_o i_o do_v not_o at_o all_o doubt_n but_o the_o custom_n be_v derive_v from_o the_o jew_n and_o be_v the_o same_o thing_n that_o i_o have_v so_o large_o treat_v on_o in_o my_o first_o part_n for_o here_o king_n and_o people_n make_v a_o solemn_a covenant_n before_o the_o lord_n and_o that_o nothing_o may_v be_v want_v to_o the_o resemblance_n they_o partake_v of_o a_o common_a meal_n together_o which_o be_v the_o ancient_a way_n of_o confirm_v and_o ratify_v all_o compact_n and_o agreement_n betwixt_o party_n and_o party_n and_o i_o think_v i_o may_v not_o improper_o style_v the_o coronation_n the_o marriage-day_n between_o the_o king_n and_o kingdom_n for_o although_o in_o
hereditary_a monarchy_n there_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o precontract_n as_o there_o often_o be_v between_o private_a person_n which_o may_v be_v so_o obligatory_a that_o nothing_o but_o death_n can_v dissolve_v it_o yet_o the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o law_n do_v not_o think_v that_o sufficient_a but_o require_v a_o formal_a and_o public_a own_n of_o it_o for_o these_o two_o reason_n among_o many_o other_o first_o for_o the_o satisfaction_n of_o the_o party_n themselves_o and_o to_o give_v they_o the_o great_a confidence_n in_o one_o another_o second_o that_o the_o number_n of_o witness_n may_v be_v some_o check_n to_o they_o and_o make_v they_o think_v how_o notorious_a their_o perjury_n will_v be_v after_o they_o have_v confirm_v their_o vow_n before_o a_o multitude_n so_o that_o as_o we_o before_o prove_v the_o king_n power_n be_v limit_v so_o now_o i_o think_v we_o may_v say_v it_o be_v conditional_a also_o for_o i_o can_v but_o suppose_v that_o all_o that_o shall_v read_v this_o paper_n understand_v the_o nature_n of_o a_o covenant_n so_o well_o that_o i_o need_v not_o tell_v they_o the_o obligation_n be_v mutual_a and_o that_o if_o i_o break_v my_o part_n of_o the_o covenant_n i_o have_v no_o right_a to_o challenge_v the_o performance_n of_o the_o other_o side_n but_o if_o king_n have_v any_o particular_a privilege_n of_o break_v their_o word_n and_o forswear_v themselves_o they_o will_v do_v well_o to_o produce_v their_o grant_n of_o exemption_n from_o the_o rule_n of_o god_n and_o nature_n for_o we_o know_v where_o it_o be_v say_v i_o will_v not_o hold_v he_o guiltless_a that_o take_v my_o name_n in_o vain_a in_o which_o law_n i_o do_v not_o remember_v any_o exception_n but_o i_o know_v to_o this_o it_o will_v be_v reply_v that_o they_o shall_v answer_v for_o it_o to_o god_n but_o be_v not_o accountable_a to_o their_o subject_n for_o the_o breach_n of_o their_o oath_n and_o if_o so_o i_o do_v wonder_n why_o they_o be_v at_o first_o impose_v for_o i_o think_v i_o may_v not_o improper_o urge_v what_o st._n paul_n say_v 1_o tim._n 1.9_o the_o law_n be_v not_o make_v for_o the_o righteous_a man_n but_o for_o the_o lawless_a etc._n etc._n so_o it_o be_v not_o a_o good_a king_n that_o we_o desire_v to_o tie_v up_o for_o we_o know_v he_o will_v be_v a_o law_n to_o himself_o but_o it_o be_v the_o lawless_a king_n that_o we_o will_v set_v bound_n to_o but_o if_o the_o most_o sacred_a and_o solemn_a oath_n give_v the_o subject_n no_o right_n at_o all_o to_o require_v or_o expect_v performance_n i_o know_v not_o of_o what_o use_v they_o be_v unless_o it_o be_v to_o damn_v the_o king_n which_o sure_o will_v be_v but_o small_a consolation_n to_o a_o christian_a subject_n but_o this_o by_o the_o by_o but_o since_o such_o covenant_n have_v in_o all_o age_n and_o nation_n be_v count_v so_o obligatory_a and_o sacred_a that_o the_o apostle_n tell_v you_o gal._n 3.15_o though_o it_o be_v but_o a_o man_n covenant_n yet_o if_o it_o be_v confirm_v no_o man_n disanmil_v or_o add_v thereto_o nor_o can_v any_o after-act_n as_o he_o prove_v very_o well_o in_o the_o 17_o the_o verse_n make_v it_o void_a therefore_o by_o this_o doctrine_n i_o can_v see_v what_o authority_n any_o three_o person_n have_v to_o acquit_v either_o king_n or_o people_n of_o their_o oath_n to_o each_o other_o so_o that_o i_o hope_v i_o may_v without_o offence_n say_v that_o king_n be_v oblige_v by_o their_o covenant_n since_o god_n almighty_n own_v himself_o to_o be_v so_o for_o moses_n desire_v the_o people_n shall_v take_v particular_a notice_n of_o it_o deut._n 7.9_o know_v therefore_o that_o the_o lord_n thy_o god_n he_o be_v god_n the_o faithful_a god_n which_o keep_v covenant_n and_o mercy_n with_o they_o that_o love_v he_o and_o keep_v his_o commandment_n that_o be_v god_n will_v be_v sure_a to_o perform_v his_o part_n of_o the_o covenant_n if_o the_o people_n keep_v they_o and_o in_o psal._n 89.34_o my_o covenant_n will_v i_o not_o break_v say_v god._n and_o it_o seem_v to_o be_v a_o title_n wherein_o he_o take_v more_o than_o ordinary_a delight_n for_o both_o nehemiah_n and_o daniel_n desire_v to_o procure_v his_o favour_n and_o to_o make_v he_o propitious_a to_o his_o people_n begin_v their_o address_n to_o he_o in_o these_o very_a word_n o_o lord_n god_n the_o great_a and_o terrible_a god_n that_o keep_v covenant_n and_o mercy_n etc._n etc._n neh._n 1.5_o and_o dan._n 9.4_o therefore_o since_o it_o be_v one_o of_o the_o attribute_n and_o excellency_n of_o god_n that_o he_o be_v true_a and_o faithful_a to_o his_o word_n it_o shall_v be_v no_o part_n of_o the_o privilege_n of_o king_n to_o be_v at_o liberty_n to_o break_v they_o now_o all_o covenant_n be_v conditional_a where_o there_o be_v a_o possibility_n of_o the_o party_n break_v their_o part_n of_o the_o covenant_n there_o be_v also_o a_o possibility_n of_o their_o forfeit_v the_o advantage_n of_o it_o and_o the_o right_n they_o have_v to_o claim_v performance_n of_o the_o other_o side_n now_o that_o king_n can_v break_v their_o word_n and_o oath_n too_o as_o well_o as_o mean_a man_n we_o have_v have_v a_o little_a too_o late_a experience_n therefore_o it_o be_v a_o point_n of_o great_a concern_v to_o know_v how_o far_o and_o when_o it_o may_v be_v lawful_a for_o the_o subject_n to_o take_v the_o forfeiture_n for_o their_o king_n brench_n of_o covenant_n and_o here_o god_n forbid_v that_o i_o shall_v attempt_v to_o make_v the_o government_n precarious_a or_o to_o make_v king_n accountable_a for_o every_o little_a failure_n for_o as_o every_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n in_o a_o subject_n be_v not_o treason_n so_o every_o violation_n of_o it_o by_o the_o prince_n be_v not_o the_o forfeit_v of_o his_o prerogative_n nay_o they_o be_v so_o very_a few_o case_n wherein_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o be_v do_v that_o perhaps_o our_o late_a unhappy_a king_n james_n be_v the_o first_o instance_n of_o it_o in_o our_o nation_n not_o but_o that_o we_o have_v have_v as_o bad_a king_n and_o worse_a man_n to_o rule_v over_o we_o but_o none_o but_o himself_o do_v ever_o attempt_n in_o so_o many_o instance_n to_o destroy_v the_o constitution_n and_o overturn_v the_o very_a foundation_n of_o our_o government_n for_o it_o be_v neither_o his_o maladministration_n in_o general_n nor_o the_o several_a particular_a injustice_n that_o be_v commit_v in_o his_o reign_n that_o i_o look_v upon_o as_o his_o great_a crime_n for_o although_o the_o proceed_n against_o the_o bishop_n and_o magdalen_n college_n be_v very_o ill_a thing_n and_o make_v a_o very_a great_a noise_n yet_o sure_o none_o can_v say_v that_o he_o forseit_v his_o crown_n by_o those_o particular_a breach_n of_o the_o law._n no_o there_o be_v the_o time_n for_o show_v and_o exercise_v true_a passive_a obedience_n for_o have_v the_o bishop_n do_v any_o thing_n but_o just_a what_o they_o do_v they_o have_v not_o do_v their_o duty_n but_o their_o patience_n and_o submission_n to_o those_o injustice_n do_v extreme_o well_o become_v they_o for_o it_o will_v be_v a_o sad_a world_n indeed_o if_o every_o body_n that_o think_v themselves_o hardly_o or_o unjust_o deal_v withal_o shall_v fly_v in_o the_o face_n of_o public_a authority_n and_o have_v power_n to_o resist_v the_o lawful_a magistrate_n no_o i_o will_v rather_o choose_v to_o live_v under_o the_o great_a tyrant_n in_o the_o world_n than_o in_o such_o a_o anarchy_n for_o where_o there_o be_v any_o law_n private_a person_n be_v not_o nor_o ought_v not_o to_o be_v judge_n in_o their_o own_o cause_n and_o that_o be_v one_o reason_n why_o a_o unjust_a sentence_n be_v obligatory_a for_o in_o such_o case_n private_a person_n must_v suffer_v rather_o than_o by_o force_n right_v themselves_o for_o it_o be_v a_o old_a say_n better_a a_o mischief_n than_o a_o inconvenience_n that_o be_v better_o a_o private_a person_n shall_v be_v wrong_v than_o the_o public_a peace_n disturb_v and_o the_o call_a authority_n in_o question_n for_o every_o little_a complaint_n will_v be_v a_o great_a inconvenience_n than_o thousand_o unjust_a sentence_n against_o particular_a person_n for_o although_o justice_n be_v never_o so_o much_o violate_v yet_o if_o the_o law_n itself_o be_v preserve_v entire_a and_o the_o constitution_n and_o basis_n of_o the_o government_n remain_v firm_a and_o unshaken_a the_o subject_n must_v be_v content_a to_o suffer_v and_o neither_o oppose_v nor_o depose_v their_o king._n but_o yet_o after_o all_o there_o be_v some_o thing_n that_o may_v be_v do_v by_o prince_n which_o the_o great_a asserter_n of_o the_o monarchical_a right_n hold_v to_o be_v forfeiture_n of_o it_o particular_o the_o sell_v of_o they_o or_o betray_v they_o to_o a_o foreign_a power_n and_o jurisdiction_n to_o which_o i_o shall_v crave_v leave_n to_o add_v
