of_o it_o 1._o our_o not_o consider_v it_o will_v not_o make_v our_o conditon_n better_a there_o be_v great_a reason_n indeed_o to_o walk_v in_o the_o way_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o our_o eye_n and_o never_o trouble_v ourselves_o with_o what_o will_v happen_v at_o the_o great_a day_n if_o the_o put_v it_o out_o of_o our_o head_n will_v make_v our_o account_n the_o easy_a when_o it_o come_v but_o alas_o whether_o we_o think_v of_o it_o or_o no_o the_o account_n run_v on_o and_o we_o must_v answer_v to_o every_o particular_a at_o last_o and_o how_o unprovided_a shall_v we_o be_v if_o we_o spend_v no_o time_n here_o in_o examine_v state_v and_o clear_v of_o they_o as_o far_o as_o we_o be_v able_a it_o be_v a_o mighty_a privilege_n we_o have_v by_o the_o gospel_n have_v no_o serious_a thought_n or_o apprehension_n of_o divine_a and_o spiritual_a thing_n this_o world_n they_o pretend_v to_o know_v something_o of_o and_o have_v too_o great_a a_o esteem_n of_o disposition_n of_o soul_n either_o they_o look_v on_o we_o with_o amazement_n as_o if_o they_o be_v insensible_a of_o such_o thing_n or_o else_o with_o scorn_n and_o contempt_n as_o if_o we_o go_v about_o to_o deceive_v they_o alas_o they_o be_v too_o wise_a to_o be_v impose_v upon_o by_o we_o and_o they_o have_v other_o thing_n to_o mind_n i_o be_o sure_a not_o great_a or_o weighty_a which_o take_v up_o all_o their_o time_n and_o so_o what_o through_o the_o business_n and_o the_o impertinency_n of_o this_o world_n their_o time_n pass_v away_o as_o a_o table_n that_o be_v tell_v and_o as_o body_n of_o christ_n so_o may_v we_o of_o the_o carnal_a mind_n there_o be_v a_o gross_a and_o capernaitical_a sense_n and_o there_o be_v a_o more_o refine_a and_o if_o i_o may_v use_v the_o expression_n a_o more_o spiritual_a sense_n of_o it_o for_o although_o it_o be_v a_o great_a absurdity_n in_o they_o to_o suppose_v that_o a_o mere_a body_n can_v be_v after_o the_o manner_n of_o a_o spirit_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o so_o to_o suppose_v a_o carnal_a mind_n to_o have_v a_o mixture_n of_o some_o spiritual_a quality_n and_o disposition_n in_o it_o and_o this_o make_v the_o difference_n so_o much_o hard_a to_o be_v perceive_v between_o the_o carnal_o and_o spiritual_o mind_v since_o there_o be_v the_o same_o faculty_n of_o perception_n reason_v and_o application_n in_o both_o and_o as_o that_o hold_v which_o fall_v into_o it_o but_o a_o spring_n have_v it_o rise_v up_o within_o and_o so_o continue_v run_v when_o the_o other_o be_v spend_v a_o carnal_a mind_n may_v have_v many_o spiritual_a conviction_n and_o good_a motion_n and_o inclination_n but_o after_o a_o time_n they_o wear_v off_o and_o leave_v no_o last_a effect_n behind_o they_o but_o where_o there_o be_v a_o spring_n in_o the_o soul_n there_o be_v a_o fresh_a and_o continual_a supply_n of_o such_o inclination_n as_o keep_v up_o a_o constant_a course_n of_o a_o spiritual_a life_n which_o our_o saviour_n call_v river_n of_o live_a water_n 38._o i_o confess_v it_o be_v hard_o to_o determine_v what_o a_o habit_n or_o principle_n abide_v in_o our_o mind_n be_v yet_o the_o scripture_n do_v evident_o suppose_v such_o a_o thing_n when_o it_o speak_v of_o the_o new_a birth_n and_o the_o new_a 6._o life_n and_o the_o new_a creature_n and_o the_o 13._o child_n of_o god_n all_o which_o be_v very_o insignificant_a term_n if_o there_o be_v not_o under_o they_o something_o answerable_a to_o the_o first_o principle_n of_o life_n and_o if_o there_o 10._o be_v not_o a_o divine_a spirit_n dwell_v and_o act_v in_o the_o soul_n of_o good_a man_n and_o raise_v they_o up_o above_o carnal_a and_o sensual_a object_n to_o thing_n divine_a and_o spiritual_a and_o carry_v they_o through_o the_o passage_n of_o this_o world_n so_o as_o to_o prepare_v they_o for_o a_o better_a but_o yet_o there_o may_v be_v many_o thing_n which_o carry_v some_o resemblance_n to_o this_o principle_n within_o which_o come_v not_o up_o to_o it_o there_o may_v be_v such_o principle_n of_o education_n and_o good_a manner_n such_o awakening_n of_o conscience_n such_o a_o strength_n of_o natural_a reason_n and_o common_a ingenuity_n as_o may_v carry_v one_o on_o to_o do_v some_o very_a good_a thing_n and_o yet_o he_o may_v fall_v short_a of_o have_v a_o true_a principle_n of_o spiritual_a life_n in_o he_o but_o then_o there_o must_v be_v another_o principle_n within_o which_o contradict_v this_o and_o prevail_v over_o it_o and_o carry_v he_o on_o to_o the_o love_n of_o sin_n which_o prove_v too_o strong_a for_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o the_o due_a regard_n to_o spiritual_a thing_n the_o result_n of_o this_o discourse_n be_v since_o the_o carnal_a mind_n be_v not_o to_o be_v take_v mere_o for_o such_o a_o one_o which_o stand_v out_o in_o opposition_n to_o the_o gospel_n nor_o for_o such_o a_o one_o which_o be_v insensible_a of_o spiritual_a thing_n but_o such_o as_o may_v consist_v with_o a_o common_a profession_n of_o religion_n and_o have_v the_o same_o conviction_n and_o good_a impression_n which_o other_o have_v it_o do_v require_v a_o more_o than_o ordinary_a acquaintance_n with_o ourselves_o to_o be_v able_a to_o judge_v aright_o whether_o the_o temper_n of_o our_o mind_n be_v carnal_a or_o spiritual_a 2._o but_o this_o be_v not_o all_o for_o since_o there_o be_v so_o great_a a_o mixture_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a in_o the_o better_a sort_n of_o mankind_n there_o be_v require_v not_o bare_o knowledge_n of_o ourselves_o but_o a_o good_a judgement_n too_o to_o adjust_a the_o proportion_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a in_o particular_a person_n so_o as_o to_o be_v able_a to_o judge_v whether_o we_o be_v carnal_o or_o spiritual_o mind_v for_o as_o those_o who_o be_v carnal_a while_o they_o follow_v their_o carnal_a inclination_n may_v have_v many_o inward_a struggle_n by_o spiritual_a conviction_n so_o those_o who_o be_v spiritual_o mind_v may_v meet_v with_o many_o combat_n from_o the_o flesh_n which_o may_v be_v troublesome_a where_o it_o can_v prevail_v but_o there_o be_v a_o great_a difference_n between_o the_o spirit_n struggle_v against_o the_o flesh_n in_o the_o carnal_o mind_v and_o the_o flesh_n struggle_v against_o the_o spirit_n in_o those_o who_o be_v spiritual_o mind_v for_o where_o there_o be_v no_o perfect_a victory_n there_o will_v be_v some_o opposition_n and_o the_o best_a have_v so_o many_o fail_n to_o complain_v of_o in_o this_o world_n so_o many_o infirmity_n and_o defect_n in_o their_o good_a action_n so_o many_o passion_n not_o bring_v into_o their_o due_a order_n so_o many_o omission_n of_o personal_n and_o relative_n duty_n such_o variety_n of_o temper_n and_o weakness_n of_o resolution_n such_o coldness_n in_o devotion_n and_o unreasonable_a dejection_n of_o mind_n so_o many_o unaccountable_a fear_n and_o such_o dreadful_a apprehension_n of_o death_n and_o the_o consequence_n of_o it_o that_o these_o difficulty_n still_o increase_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v time_n to_o come_v to_o the_o resolution_n of_o it_o and_o that_o will_v be_v by_o show_v that_o the_o difference_n between_o the_o carnal_a and_o spiritual_a mind_n lie_v in_o these_o three_o thing_n 1._o in_o the_o deliberate_a judgement_n and_o choice_n 2._o in_o the_o prevail_a interest_n 3._o in_o the_o constant_a rule_n and_o measure_n of_o action_n 1._o in_o the_o deliberate_a judgement_n and_o choice_n for_o the_o main_a difference_n as_o to_o the_o carnal_a and_o spiritual_a mind_n lie_v in_o the_o different_a end_n which_o be_v aim_v at_o by_o they_o where_o the_o chief_a end_n be_v the_o please_a ourselves_o and_o the_o enjoy_n of_o any_o thing_n as_o our_o happiness_n under_o the_o supreme_a good_a whatever_o thought_n and_o intention_n we_o may_v at_o some_o time_n have_v to_o repent_v of_o our_o sin_n and_o turn_v our_o soul_n from_o the_o love_n of_o sin_n to_o the_o love_n of_o god_n as_o long_o as_o we_o continue_v pursue_v a_o wrong_a end_n we_o have_v too_o great_a reason_n to_o conclude_v our_o mind_n to_o be_v yet_o carnal_a and_o sell_v under_o sin_n for_o while_o the_o apostle_n represent_v himself_o so_o he_o tell_v we_o he_o have_v his_o conscience_n thorough_o awaken_v with_o the_o sense_n of_o his_o sin_n even_o of_o those_o which_o the_o world_n be_v least_o apt_a to_o be_v sensible_a of_o inward_a and_o secret_a sin_n he_o be_v not_o only_o convince_v 22._o of_o the_o excellency_n and_o purity_n of_o the_o law_n but_o have_v some_o pleasure_n and_o satisfaction_n in_o it_o he_o have_v some_o hearty_a desire_n to_o be_v rid_v of_o his_o belove_a sin_n but_o yet_o they_o be_v too_o hard_o for_o he_o he_o sigh_v and_o lament_v under_o his_o deplorable_a condition_n but_o till_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n come_v to_o set_v he_o free_a he_o be_v in_o a_o miserable_a and_o hopeless_a state_n but_o how_o be_v it_o that_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n thus_o refine_v and_o purify_v the_o mind_n of_o man_n so_o as_o of_o carnal_a to_o make_v they_o spiritual_a when_o the_o same_o passion_n and_o inclination_n remain_v a_o change_n there_o must_v be_v and_o that_o real_a and_o spiritual_a and_o therefore_o in_o our_o best_a faculty_n viz._n our_o understanding_n and_o our_o will_n not_o by_o a_o revelation_n of_o new_a object_n to_o the_o mind_n nor_o by_o offer_v any_o force_n upon_o the_o will_n but_o by_o fix_v the_o judgement_n of_o the_o mind_n and_o the_o choice_n of_o the_o will_n upon_o the_o best_a and_o most_o desirable_a object_n which_o be_v god_n himself_o as_o the_o supreme_a good_n the_o turn_v of_o the_o soul_n which_o make_v one_o spiritual_o mind_v must_v not_o be_v only_o from_o gross_a and_o sensual_a inclination_n but_o from_o every_o other_o kind_n of_o good_a which_o stand_v in_o competition_n with_o the_o supreme_a a_o true_o spiritual_a mind_n be_v one_o that_o be_v possess_v with_o the_o love_n of_o god_n above_o all_o and_o that_o value_v other_o thing_n as_o they_o tend_v to_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o he_o god_n must_v be_v the_o only_a centre_n of_o his_o hope_n and_o design_n for_o in_o he_o alone_o his_o true_a of_o love_n which_o be_v alone_o proper_a and_o suitable_a to_o he_o all_o other_o kind_n of_o love_n be_v beneath_o his_o infinite_a goodness_n and_o perfection_n and_o to_o love_v he_o as_o we_o do_v his_o creature_n be_v to_o do_v he_o the_o great_a dishonour_n for_o it_o level_v their_o perfection_n and_o suppose_v they_o to_o deserve_v the_o same_o degree_n of_o affection_n from_o we_o but_o there_o may_v be_v many_o spiritual_a notion_n in_o man_n mind_n about_o god_n and_o religion_n about_o mystical_a union_n and_o the_o participation_n of_o divine_a love_n many_o seem_a spiritual_a rapture_n and_o ecstasy_n and_o yet_o there_o may_v not_o be_v this_o spiritual_a mind_n for_o the_o heat_n of_o enthusiasm_n may_v seem_v to_o be_v very_o spiritual_a but_o be_v of_o another_o kind_n they_o be_v spiritual_a as_o they_o be_v the_o effect_n of_o a_o great_a heat_n of_o the_o spirit_n by_o the_o force_n of_o a_o vehement_a imagination_n which_o have_v be_v often_o accompany_v with_o as_o vehement_a a_o inclination_n to_o sensual_a pleasure_n which_o show_v the_o plain_a difference_n between_o a_o exalt_a fancy_n and_o a_o spiritual_a mind_n a_o spiritual_a mind_n be_v such_o a_o one_o as_o be_v not_o only_o thorough_o convince_v of_o the_o reality_n of_o spiritual_a thing_n but_o of_o their_o excellency_n and_o desirableness_n above_o any_o other_o world_n may_v be_v full_o convince_v that_o the_o thing_n which_o be_v see_v can_v not_o be_v what_o they_o be_v be_v it_o not_o for_o the_o thing_n which_o be_v not_o see_v and_o that_o the_o thing_n which_o be_v not_o see_v be_v of_o incomparable_o great_a value_n than_o those_o which_o be_v so_o much_o more_o admire_a because_o they_o be_v see_v but_o we_o must_v not_o conclude_v that_o
