allow_v of_o some_o treasure_n as_o 2._o cor._n 12._o 14._o for_o the_o child_n and_o for_o the_o church_n 29._o and_o joseph_n be_v commend_v for_o hoard_v up_o corn_n in_o the_o seven_o year_n of_o plenty_n against_o the_o seven_o year_n of_o dearth_n gen._n 41._o 48._o yea_o in_o the_o temple_n there_o be_v a_o treasure_n by_o the_o appointment_n of_o god_n make_v maintain_v and_o continue_v from_o time_n to_o time_n therefore_o he_o do_v not_o simple_o condemn_v the_o gather_n of_o riches_n or_o the_o lay_n up_o of_o they_o what_o forbid_v he_o then_o sundry_a practice_n of_o covetousness_n imply_v in_o the_o 19_o verse_n the_o first_o practice_n be_v excess_n in_o seek_v worldly_a wealth_n when_o man_n know_v &_o keep_v no_o mean_a moderation_n or_o measure_n and_o that_o we_o may_v see_v the_o danger_n of_o this_o vice_n i_o will_v answer_v this_o question_n how_o far_o a_o man_n may_v seek_v and_o provide_v for_o worldly_a wealth_n in_o answer_v whereof_o i_o lay_v this_o ground_n for_o a_o foundation_n that_o be_v man_n good_n must_v be_v distinguish_v into_o three_o sort_n viz._n necessaria_fw-la abundantia_fw-la superflua_fw-la that_o be_v necessary_a abundance_n and_o superfluous_a necessary_a good_n be_v twofolde_v some_o be_v necessary_a to_o the_o nature_n and_o some_o be_v necessary_a to_o the_o person_n and_o condition_n of_o man_n those_o which_o be_v necessary_a to_o nature_n be_v such_o as_o without_o which_o neither_o a_o man_n himself_o nor_o his_o family_n can_v live_v as_o meat_n drink_n cloth_n and_o lodging_n those_o which_o be_v necessary_a to_o the_o person_n that_o be_v to_o any_o man_n state_n condition_n call_v or_o kind_n of_o life_n be_v such_o as_o the_o artificer_n instrument_n the_o tradesman_n tool_n and_o the_o student_n book_n now_o here_o arise_v a_o question_n or_o two_o by_o the_o way_n what_o good_n and_o how_o much_o be_v necessary_a for_o the_o person_n for_o answer_v whereof_o the_o opinion_n and_o judgement_n of_o the_o covetous_a must_v be_v no_o rule_n because_o his_o heart_n be_v a_o sea_n unsatiable_a or_o that_o can_v be_v fill_v what_o then_o must_v be_v the_o rule_n thereof_o there_o be_v no_o certain_a rule_n therefore_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o wise_a learned_a godly_a and_o christian_a frugal_a man_n must_v be_v the_o rule_n to_o judge_v what_o be_v necessary_a and_o whatsoever_o be_v in_o their_o judgement_n necessary_a must_v be_v so_o account_v further_o thing_n necessary_a must_v not_o be_v judge_v only_o by_o the_o present_a use_n but_o also_o by_o the_o use_n in_o time_n to_o come_v as_o for_o example_n a_o tradesman_n grow_v in_o year_n and_o have_v nothing_o to_o live_v on_o beside_o his_o trade_n his_o hand_n and_o sight_n fail_v he_o therefore_o he_o provide_v something_o to_o maintain_v he_o in_o his_o old_a age_n and_o lay_v it_o up_o for_o a_o certain_a and_o necessary_a use_n in_o time_n to_o come_v until_o his_o death_n again_o a_o man_n that_o have_v child_n the_o time_n will_v come_v when_o he_o must_v give_v they_o their_o portion_n and_o therefore_o he_o may_v provide_v for_o they_o against_o they_o come_v to_o age_n and_o he_o sin_v not_o but_o do_v well_o because_o it_o serve_v for_o a_o certain_a use_n in_o time_n to_o come_v thus_o far_o of_o the_o first_o sort_n that_o be_v of_o necessary_a good_n now_o of_o the_o next_o the_o second_o kind_n be_v abundance_n that_o be_v plenty_n of_o worldly_a riches_n wherewith_o a_o man_n be_v so_o store_v that_o he_o have_v both_o for_o a_o necessity_n and_o also_o for_o a_o holy_a delight_n and_o hearts-ease_n the_o three_o be_v superfluous_a these_o be_v such_o whereof_o a_o man_n have_v neither_o present_a use_n nor_o any_o
their_o grace_n answer_n faith_n do_v not_o save_v any_o because_o it_o be_v perfect_a but_o because_o it_o rest_v on_o god_n mercy_n and_o though_o a_o man_n unbelief_n be_v great_a than_o his_o faith_n yet_o it_o will_v not_o condemn_v he_o if_o he_o do_v bewail_v it_o and_o use_v mean_n diligent_o that_o it_o may_v increase_v this_o first_o point_n of_o doctrine_n be_v to_o be_v remember_v because_o every_o child_n of_o god_n can_v attain_v to_o abraham_n faith_n and_o to_o a_o full_a persuasion_n and_o therefore_o all_o such_o as_o have_v but_o the_o begin_n of_o faith_n must_v not_o be_v discourage_v for_o thou_o may_v be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n with_o thy_o little_a faith_n if_o thou_o bewail_v it_o and_o be_v diligent_a to_o attain_v to_o strong_a faith_n endless_a &_o unspeakable_a be_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n in_o this_o behalf_n he_o pardon_v manifold_a doubt_n distrust_n and_o unbelief_n to_o they_o that_o bewail_v it_o and_o desire_v to_o increase_v in_o faith_n second_o the_o cause_n why_o christ_n reprove_v his_o own_o disciple_n thus_o sharp_o be_v because_o they_o do_v not_o believe_v in_o god_n for_o raiment_n as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v because_o you_o believe_v not_o this_o therefore_o you_o be_v to_o be_v blame_v as_o have_v little_a faith_n and_o therefore_o he_o call_v they_o thus_o because_o they_o do_v not_o believe_v in_o god_n for_o meat_n drink_n and_o cloth_n here_o a_o second_o point_n of_o doctrine_n be_v to_o be_v observe_v that_o true_a save_a faith_n do_v not_o only_o apprehend_v god_n mercy_n for_o life_n eternal_a but_o 〈◊〉_d for_o the_o temporal_a blessing_n of_o this_o life_n the_o very_a same_o faith_n whereby_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o life_n eternal_a be_v apprehend_v lay_v hold_v on_o temporal_a blessing_n this_o must_v not_o seem_v strange_a for_o to_o make_v it_o plain_a there_o be_v two_o kind_n of_o blessing_n promise_v in_o the_o scripture_n viz._n principal_a and_o less_o principal_a the_o principal_n be_v christ_n god_n and_o man_n the_o redeemer_n of_o mankind_n with_o righteousness_n and_o life_n eternal_a in_o he_o this_o be_v the_o main_a &_o principal_a blessing_n now_o upon_o this_o there_o follow_v blessing_n less_o principal_a which_o be_v also_o promise_v as_o well_o as_o the_o principal_a and_o these_o be_v meat_n drink_n clothing_n health_n etc._n etc._n and_o these_o be_v promise_v we_o so_o far_o forth_o as_o they_o be_v for_o our_o good_a in_o christ_n and_o by_o christ_n all_o these_o be_v promise_v to_o this_o purpose_n paul_n say_v all_o the_o premise_n in_o he_o 1._o be_v yea_o and_o amen_n not_o only_o remission_n of_o sin_n be_v yea_o and_o amen_o that_o be_v a_o thing_n grant_v and_o accomplish_v but_o all_o other_o temporal_a blessing_n this_o be_v so_o now_o mark_v what_o follow_v when_o true_a faith_n lay_v hold_v on_o the_o main_a and_o principal_a blessing_n then_o withal_o it_o apprehend_v all_o other_o temporal_a blessing_n necessary_a they_o be_v all_o apprehend_v in_o and_o with_o the_o principal_n it_o be_v say_v of_o abraham_n 4._o that_o by_o his_o very_a justify_n faith_n he_o do_v believe_v that_o god_n will_v give_v he_o a_o son_n when_o he_o be_v a_o hundred_o year_n old_a it_o be_v not_o a_o diverse_a faith_n noah_n by_o the_o same_o faith_n 11._o whereby_o he_o be_v save_v believe_v that_o he_o shall_v be_v preserve_v and_o his_o household_n in_o the_o flood_n in_o like_a manner_n by_o one_o and_o the_o same_o faith_n we_o believe_v our_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n in_o christ_n &_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o that_o god_n will_v give_v we_o necessary_n meat_n drink_n cloth_n one_o and_o the_o same_o faith_n lay_v hold_v first_o on_o the_o main_a and_o principal_a promise_n and_o then_o on_o the_o less_o principal_a this_o point_n must_v be_v mark_v and_o this_o point_n remember_v first_o mercy_n than_o providence_n first_o the_o principal_a blessing_n and_o then_o the_o temporal_a every_o man_n say_v he_o look_v to_o be_v save_v by_o faith_n when_o he_o die_v and_o it_o be_v well_o but_o we_o must_v add_v this_o we_o must_v live_v by_o faith_n too_o we_o must_v lead_v our_o life_n by_o the_o same_o faith_n by_o which_o we_o look_v to_o be_v save_v after_o this_o life_n and_o we_o must_v depend_v on_o god_n providence_n as_o certain_o for_o these_o necessary_n as_o we_o do_v upon_o his_o mercy_n for_o our_o salvation_n we_o must_v not_o live_v by_o sense_n or_o reason_n but_o by_o faith_n how_o this_o be_v to_o be_v do_v you_o shall_v see_v afterward_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o we_o to_o be_v save_v by_o faith_n when_o we_o die_v if_o we_o do_v not_o live_v by_o faith_n he_o that_o can_v cast_v himself_o upon_o god_n providence_n for_o the_o necessary_n of_o this_o life_n can_v much_o less_o cast_v himself_o on_o god_n mercy_n for_o the_o salvation_n of_o his_o soul_n so_o much_o for_o the_o second_o point_n three_o christ_n give_v we_o here_o a_o note_n and_o mark_v whereby_o we_o may_v try_v our_o faith_n whether_o it_o be_v a_o save_a faith_n or_o no_o true_a or_o feign_a great_a or_o little_a for_o he_o give_v we_o to_o understand_v that_o the_o more_o man_n be_v distract_v with_o worldly_a care_n the_o less_o be_v their_o faith_n and_o the_o reason_n be_v plain_a the_o more_o man_n care_n be_v the_o less_o their_o trust_n be_v in_o god_n providence_n and_o the_o less_o their_o trust_n be_v in_o god_n providence_n the_o less_o faith_n in_o his_o mercy_n for_o their_o salvation_n so_o that_o where_o worldly_a care_n bear_v rule_v there_o be_v no_o faith_n in_o god_n providence_n as_o long_o as_o man_n be_v in_o prosperity_n they_o think_v they_o have_v great_a faith_n but_o in_o poverty_n and_o affliction_n their_o faith_n be_v try_v for_o then_o common_o the_o hart_n be_v swallow_v up_o with_o grief_n and_o fear_n he_o that_o can_v rest_v on_o god_n providence_n for_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n how_o shall_v he_o rest_v on_o god_n mercy_n in_o the_o pain_n of_o death_n and_o thus_o much_o of_o the_o reproof_n 31._o therefore_o take_v no_o thought_n say_v what_o shall_v we_o eat_v or_o what_o shall_v we_o drink_v or_o wherewith_o shall_v we_o be_v clothe_v these_o word_n be_v a_o repetition_n of_o the_o commandment_n deliver_v in_o the_o 25._o verse_n and_o here_o the_o commandment_n be_v the_o second_o time_n repeat_v once_o before_o it_o be_v repeat_v the_o cause_n of_o this_o repetition_n be_v diverse_a one_o i_o have_v declare_v before_o and_o that_o be_v that_o he_o may_v set_v a_o edge_n upon_o the_o commandment_n and_o make_v it_o take_v place_n in_o their_o heart_n second_o that_o they_o may_v learn_v their_o duty_n how_o they_o ought_v to_o confirm_v their_o faith_n for_o as_o christ_n urge_v it_o by_o a_o repetition_n so_o man_n must_v by_o meditate_v upon_o it_o the_o often_o increase_v their_o faith_n faith_n be_v wrought_v in_o the_o heart_n as_o the_o print_n of_o a_o seal_n in_o the_o wax_n or_o as_o a_o vision_n or_o revelation_n in_o the_o night_n where_o the_o man_n do_v nothing_o but_o faith_n be_v wrought_v by_o these_o mean_v ordinary_a viz._n the_o word_n read_v hear_v preach_v or_o meditate_a further_o that_o these_o mean_n may_v be_v effectual_a there_o must_v be_v a_o motion_n in_o we_o whereby_o we_o must_v strive_v against_o doubt_v distrust_n and_o unbelief_n &_o therefore_o we_o be_v often_o to_o urge_v the_o commandment_n to_o ourselves_o and_o exercise_v ourselves_o in_o it_o and_o apply_v it_o strive_v &_o struggle_v wrestle_v &_o labour_n for_o this_o end_n that_o we_o may_v more_o constant_o and_o hearty_o apply_v the_o promise_n of_o mercy_n and_o providence_n to_o ourselves_o this_o be_v the_o second_o cause_n of_o the_o repetition_n that_o we_o may_v master_v our_o unbelief_n by_o strive_v and_o labour_v you_o must_v do_v that_o which_o you_o can_v do_v by_o nature_n and_o grace_n that_o be_v come_v to_o the_o assembly_n and_o endeavour_n to_o put_v away_o unbelief_n and_o by_o this_o mean_v you_o shall_v increase_v in_o faith_n so_o much_o for_o the_o repetition_n of_o the_o commandment_n now_o to_o the_o word_n therefore_o take_v no_o thought_n etc._n etc._n these_o word_n tend_v to_o this_o end_n not_o to_o breed_v idleness_n or_o carelessness_n in_o any_o but_o as_o i_o declare_v in_o the_o 25._o verse_n therefore_o i_o will_v show_v you_o how_o far_o forth_o we_o may_v care_v for_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n and_o where_o it_o must_v end_v first_o it_o go_v thus_o far_o every_o man_n must_v have_v a_o care_n to_o do_v the_o good_a and_o profitable_a duty_n of_o his_o call_n with_o diligence_n and_o painfulness_n from_o that_o care_n christ_n free_v no_o man_n therefore_o every_o man_n must_v consider_v what_o
