give_v it_o but_o to_o their_o destruction_n and_o that_o this_o sweat_n &_o this_o travel_n please_v god_n high_o here_o be_v two_o great_a commodity_n for_o one_o discommodity_n which_o the_o flesh_n see_v only_o and_o no_o more_o but_o here_o we_o must_v note_v that_o this_o be_v not_o call_v labour_n only_o when_o the_o body_n be_v exercise_v and_o weary_v but_o the_o care_n and_o trouble_v of_o the_o mind_n be_v also_o a_o labour_n for_o the_o prophet_n use_v here_o such_o a_o word_n as_o signify_v not_o only_o that_o labour_n which_o be_v do_v with_o the_o hand_n but_o also_o the_o discommodity_n the_o sorrow_n and_o vexation_n which_o in_o our_o labour_n and_o with_o our_o labour_n we_o do_v sustain_v such_o trouble_n in_o family_n and_o household_n do_v chance_n very_o often_o many_o time_n it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o when_o the_o husband_n do_v his_o duty_n careful_o and_o diligent_o his_o wife_n be_v unquiet_a and_o full_a of_o strife_n his_o child_n fall_v sick_a his_o servant_n be_v not_o only_o negligent_a but_o also_o deceitful_a and_o unfaithful_a these_o thing_n we_o call_v not_o labour_n but_o sorrow_n and_o vexation_n and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o the_o prophet_n comprehend_v both_o under_o the_o name_n of_o labour_n so_o that_o whether_o we_o seem_v to_o be_v afflict_v either_o in_o do_v or_o in_o suffer_v that_o be_v either_o in_o bodily_a labour_n or_o vexation_n of_o the_o mind_n all_o this_o shall_v we_o patient_o endure_v &_o think_v that_o god_n have_v not_o give_v we_o this_o life_n that_o we_o shall_v affliction_n of_o this_o life_n be_v sure_o that_o even_o in_o death_n our_o life_n be_v hide_v and_o safe_o keep_v with_o christ_n in_o god_n and_o we_o shall_v overcome_v all_o the_o fiery_a dart_n for_o his_o defence_n and_o hide_v himself_o under_o it_o they_o god_n accept_v as_o his_o child_n because_o they_o have_v a_o saviour_n but_o they_o that_o have_v not_o be_v drive_v to_o despair_v for_o what_o can_v all_o their_o work_n their_o merit_n their_o righteousness_n do_v see_v david_n say_v if_o thou_o mark_v our_o iniquity_n oh_o lord_n who_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o stand_v in_o thy_o sight_n in_o this_o verse_n therefore_o consist_v altogether_o which_o hereafter_o follow_v verse_n 4._o but_o mercy_n be_v with_o thou_o that_o thou_o may_v be_v fear_v this_o mercy_n thou_o shall_v not_o find_v in_o moses_n in_o the_o law_n or_o in_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n not_o in_o monkery_n not_o in_o a_o strait_a and_o painful_a life_n not_o in_o alm_n deed_n etc_n etc_n it_o be_v the_o free_a pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n by_o christ_n alone_o which_o mercy_n although_o thou_o shall_v afflict_v and_o punish_v thyself_o in_o a_o monastery_n a_o thousand_o year_n or_o do_v never_o so_o many_o so_o perfect_a or_o so_o holy_a work_n thou_o shall_v never_o find_v as_o the_o conscience_n which_o even_o in_o a_o most_o strait_o and_o holy_a life_n feell_v desperation_n do_v sufficient_o witness_v but_o herein_o alone_a the_o conscience_n find_v rest_n and_o comfort_n when_o altogether_o naked_a &_o without_o any_o addition_n of_o her_o own_o worthiness_n it_o commit_v who_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o impute_v that_o sin_n which_o he_o have_v as_o here_o also_o he_o say_v when_o sin_n be_v not_o mark_v these_o testimony_n must_v be_v diligent_o collect_v and_o note_v that_o we_o may_v see_v how_o that_o this_o doctrine_n be_v found_v upon_o the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o that_o all_o the_o confidence_n and_o trust_v that_o man_n can_v have_v in_o the_o righteousness_n of_o work_n or_o of_o the_o law_n be_v utter_o cut_v of_o in_o the_o judgement_n of_o god._n for_o this_o doctrine_n make_v all_o man_n alike_o and_o before_o god_n leave_v no_o difference_n alike_o for_o if_o by_o imputation_n only_o we_o be_v righteous_a it_o follow_v that_o not_o only_o we_o be_v all_o sinner_n but_o that_o also_o there_o be_v no_o differenee_n between_o the_o learned_a &_o unlearned_a the_o wise_a and_o the_o simple_a the_o marry_a and_o unmarried_a the_o prince_n and_o the_o ploughman_n etc_n etc_n for_o this_o difference_n of_o degree_n in_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n avail_v nothing_o but_o this_o only_a avail_v before_o god_n that_o our_o sin_n be_v forgive_v wherefore_o if_o this_o doctrive_v have_v be_v heretofore_o diligent_o teach_v all_o monkry_n &_o such_o other_o monstrous_a kind_n of_o life_n have_v not_o be_v bring_v into_o the_o church_n which_o the_o foolish_a people_n have_v believe_v to_o be_v more_o holy_a than_o other_o for_o what_o soever_o kind_a of_o life_n a_o man_n be_v in_o this_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o we_o all_o that_o we_o have_v need_n of_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n as_o paul_n teach_v in_o the_o act_n where_o he_o show_v that_o god_n suffer_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o father_n 13._o like_v as_o a_o good_a husband_n suffer_v and_o bear_v with_o the_o manner_n of_o his_o wife_n the_o master_n of_o his_o scholar_n the_o prince_n of_o his_o subject_n now_o if_o this_o evil_a life_n have_v need_n of_o such_o discretion_n and_o moderation_n that_o man_n shall_v not_o be_v always_o extreme_a and_o rigorous_a in_o deal_v one_o towards_o a_o other_o how_o much_o more_o need_n have_v we_o that_o god_n shall_v bear_v with_o we_o in_o this_o our_o great_a weakness_n and_o corruption_n if_o god_n shall_v deal_v sharp_o with_o we_o than_o shall_v our_o transgression_n daily_a and_o continual_o move_v he_o to_o mark_v strait_o and_o sharp_o to_o punish_v we_o but_o he_o will_v not_o mark_v our_o iniquity_n this_o he_o require_v that_o we_o believe_v in_o christ_n then_o will_v he_o bear_v with_o we_o then_o will_v he_o wink_v at_o our_o weakness_n and_o pardon_v our_o transgression_n yea_o in_o respect_n of_o our_o faith_n in_o christ_n he_o will_v accept_v we_o as_o righteous_a thus_o david_n turn_v himself_o from_o desperation_n to_o a_o assure_a hope_n succour_n and_o when_o we_o seem_v to_o be_v cut_v of_o and_o to_o be_v cast_v away_o from_o god_n even_o then_o to_o believe_v and_o by_o faith_n to_o lay_v sure_a handfast_a on_o god_n eternal_a mercy_n and_o grace_n in_o christ_n as_o david_n here_o do_v who_o be_v afflict_v and_o feel_v no_o comfort_n and_o yet_o he_o say_v i_o lift_v up_o my_o eye_n to_o the_o hill_n from_o whence_o come_v lust_n but_o such_o as_o be_v in_o poverty_n contempt_n of_o the_o world_n afflict_v in_o body_n or_o mind_n be_v force_v to_o lift_v up_o their_o eye_n that_o the_o help_n which_o be_v invisible_a may_v be_v make_v to_o they_o visible_a by_o faith_n according_a to_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n make_v unto_o they_o in_o his_o word_n these_o be_v the_o word_n therefore_o of_o a_o man_n that_o feel_v the_o same_o that_o we_o feel_v that_o be_v to_o say_v our_o heart_n to_o be_v oppress_v with_o sorrow_n and_o heaviness_n when_o we_o think_v ourselves_o to_o be_v desolate_a and_o forsake_a can_v see_v no_o succour_n when_o we_o see_v not_o riches_n but_o poverty_n not_o glory_n but_o ignominy_n shame_n and_o confusion_n in_o these_o calamity_n the_o heart_n be_v a_o heavy_a burden_n weigh_v down_o to_o the_o ground_n the_o eye_n and_o the_o head_n that_o they_o can_v see_v or_o think_v upon_o nothing_o else_o but_o terrene_a and_o earthly_a thing_n therefore_o he_o exhort_v we_o by_o his_o own_o example_n to_o lift_v up_o our_o eye_n and_o look_v to_o invisible_a thing_n which_o the_o word_n promise_v we_o shall_v certain_o enjoy_v thus_o we_o see_v the_o nature_n of_o faith_n lively_o set_v out_o in_o this_o psalm_n now_o follow_v as_o it_o be_v a_o explication_n what_o hill_n he_o speak_v of_o verse_n 2._o my_o help_n come_v of_o the_o lord_n which_o have_v make_v heaven_n and_o earth_n he_o speak_v here_o of_o such_o hill_n as_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o flesh_n can_v not_o see_v for_o who_o be_v so_o quick_a of_o sight_n to_o see_v or_o so_o wise_a to_o perceive_v and_o understand_v that_o the_o hill_n moria_n be_v a_o holy_a hill_n a_o heap_n of_o earth_n the_o bodily_a eye_n may_v see_v but_o the_o holiness_n the_o power_n and_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n there_o present_a they_o can_v not_o see_v nor_o that_o the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v there_o that_o the_o lord_n have_v promise_v there_o to_o dwell_v and_o abide_v that_o he_o have_v put_v a_o memorial_n of_o his_o name_n in_o that_o place_n and_o that_o there_o he_o will_v be_v seek_v there_o he_o will_v be_v find_v for_o he_o that_o seek_v not_o god_n in_o this_o place_n can_v not_o find_v he_o in_o heaven_n like_a as_o since_o god_n have_v reveil_v himself_o in_o that_o man_n christ_n we_o true_o say_v and_o also_o believe_v that_o whosoever_o do_v not_o embrace_v and_o by_o faith_n lie_v hold_v on_o this_o man_n which_o be_v bear_v of_o the_o virgin_n they_o can_v never_o believe_v in_o god_n but_o although_o they_o say_v they_o believe_v in_o the_o maker_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n yet_o do_v they_o in_o deed_n believe_v in_o the_o idol_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n for_o without_o christ_n there_o be_v no_o true_a god_n therefore_o david_n behold_v these_o hill_n in_o jerusalem_n not_o with_o bodily_a eye_n as_o the_o ox_n do_v his_o stall_n but_o with_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o spirit_n he_o see_v that_o god_n dwell_v there_o by_o his_o word_n therefore_o these_o hill_n be_v now_o no_o more_o earth_n and_o mould_n but_o they_o be_v the_o hill_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o the_o fullness_n of_o his_o godhead_n so_o that_o with_o out_o these_o hill_n concern_v god_n there_o can_v nothing_o be_v find_v therefore_o it_o be_v true_o say_v of_o the_o prophet_n that_o from_o these_o hill_n come_v help_v and_o succour_n that_o be_v to_o say_v from_o god_n dwell_v and_o abide_v there_o by_o his_o word_n like_a as_o we_o believe_v that_o christ_n be_v the_o throne_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o which_o be_v the_o treasure_n of_o all_o good_a thing_n and_o heavenly_a blessing_n to_o be_v find_v and_o without_o the_o which_o there_o be_v nothing_o now_o in_o that_o he_o do_v not_o only_o say_v my_o help_n come_v from_o the_o lord_n but_o add_v moreover_o which_o make_v heaven_n &_o earth_n he_o reprove_v &_o condemn_v all_o other_o help_n which_o man_n seek_v &_o procure_v unto_o themselves_o beside_o god_n with_o false_a trust_n &_o affiance_n in_o the_o same_o as_o idol_n of_o their_o own_o imagination_n so_o be_v mammon_n a_o god_n also_o that_o be_v to_o say_v be_v worship_v of_o man_n as_o a_o god_n &_o help_v they_o also_o sometime_o but_o in_o penury_n of_o food_n &_o victual_n what_o succour_n can_v he_o bring_v no_o man_n can_v satisfy_v his_o hungry_a belly_n with_o gold_n and_o silver_n likewise_o in_o drought_n and_o barrenness_n of_o the_o earth_n what_o can_v he_o help_v what_o good_a can_v he_o do_v in_o disease_n &_o infirmity_n of_o the_o body_n if_o then_o in_o these_o corporal_a malady_n he_o can_v not_o help_v what_o can_v he_o do_v when_o the_o conscience_n be_v trouble_v with_o sin_n &_o the_o horror_n of_o death_n it_o be_v therefore_o but_o a_o false_a pleasure_n and_o delight_n that_o mammon_n bring_v which_o be_v but_o only_o to_o satisfy_v &_o please_v the_o eye_n as_o a_o picture_n or_o paint_a table_n against_o these_o help_n therefore_o &_o such_o like_a which_o the_o world_n seek_v after_o the_o prophet_n set_v the_o lord_n himself_o who_o make_v not_o only_a gold_n &_o silver_n not_o only_a food_n &_o sustenance_n heaven_n and_o earth_n that_o be_v to_o say_v angel_n man_n and_o the_o whole_a world_n but_o beside_o these_o give_v remission_n of_o sin_n faith_n righteousness_n joy_n &_o peace_n of_o heart_n with_o everlasting_a life_n he_o be_v say_v the_o prophet_n my_o almighty_a and_o sure_a help_n of_o who_o i_o can_v not_o doubt_v that_o he_o will_v ever_o fail_v i_o the_o twinkle_n of_o a_o eye_n to_o this_o lord_n i_o fly_v for_o aid_n &_o succour_n who_o not_o only_o in_o this_o life_n can_v and_o do_v give_v health_n &_o welfare_n for_o a_o few_o year_n with_o security_n of_o conscience_n &_o contempt_n of_o death_n &_o all_o the_o fury_n of_o the_o world_n but_o also_o after_o this_o life_n eternal_a felicity_n &_o life_n everlasting_a thus_o the_o prophet_n inflame_v himself_o &_o stir_v up_o his_o faith_n for_o our_o example_n that_o we_o likewise_o shall_v magnify_v the_o blessing_n &_o good_a gift_n of_o god_n in_o we_o &_o also_o our_o hope_n &_o trust_v in_o he_o for_o if_o the_o rich_fw-fr man_n of_o the_o world_n do_v glory_n in_o their_o money_n if_o they_o vaunt_v of_o their_o wealth_n and_o riches_n why_o shall_v not_o we_o also_o glory_v in_o the_o trust_n &_o confidence_n we_o have_v in_o god_n which_o have_v make_v heaven_n and_o earth_n which_o have_v also_o in_o his_o hand_n all_o thing_n necessary_a both_o for_o this_o life_n &_o for_o the_o life_n to_o come_v but_o because_o these_o thing_n be_v invisible_a &_o can_v not_o be_v see_v but_o with_o spiritual_a eye_n therefore_o we_o common_o neglect_v they_o and_o albeit_o the_o lord_n do_v sometime_o hide_v these_o help_n from_o we_o &_o let_v we_o feel_v the_o lack_n thereof_o for_o a_o time_n as_o he_o do_v in_o deed_n to_o make_v we_o the_o more_o desirous_a of_o they_o
the_o more_o to_o esteem_v they_o when_o we_o have_v they_o and_o to_o be_v the_o more_o thankful_a to_o god_n for_o the_o same_o yet_o must_v we_o learn_v sure_o to_o trust_v and_o undoubted_o believe_v that_o they_o will_v come_v verse_n 3._o he_o will_v not_o suffer_v thy_o foot_n to_o slip_v for_o he_o that_o keep_v israel_n will_v not_o slumber_v this_o verse_n depend_v upon_o those_o that_o go_v before_o for_o the_o prophet_n because_o he_o begin_v with_o a_o exhortation_n to_o faith_n now_o go_v about_o as_o it_o be_v with_o promise_n lord_n to_o move_v and_o exhort_v the_o faithful_a to_o hold_v fast_o this_o confidence_n &_o trust_n in_o the_o help_n &_o succour_v of_o the_o lord_n and_o very_o necessary_a it_o be_v for_o we_o to_o exhort_v and_o stir_v up_o not_o only_o other_o but_o ourselves_o also_o because_o of_o the_o present_a danger_n and_o affliction_n for_o see_v the_o thing_n which_o discomfort_v we_o be_v present_a and_o they_o which_o comfort_v we_o be_v absent_a therefore_o so_o long_o as_o the_o present_a thing_n which_o vex_v we_o do_v endure_v it_o be_v needful_a that_o we_o shall_v be_v stir_v up_o with_o the_o word_n and_o exhortation_n to_o perseverance_n and_o patience_n for_o this_o experience_n of_o trouble_n and_o affliction_n must_v be_v join_v with_o doctrine_n &_o exhâ—â—â—â—tion_n for_o our_o sight_n be_v so_o dim_a that_o we_o can_v not_o see_v these_o inviâ—â—â—â—â—_n thing_n and_o the_o end_n of_o affliction_n therefore_o the_o flesh_n ever_o sâ—â—keth_v mean_n how_o it_o may_v be_v deliver_v and_o when_o it_o can_v see_v nonâ—â—as_v the_o carnal_a eye_n can_v never_o see_v god_n marvellous_a help_n &_o deliverance_n then_o be_v it_o miserable_o vex_v and_o torment_v and_o can_v find_v noâ—est_v nor_o quietness_n we_o have_v need_v therefore_o of_o exhortation_n out_o 〈◊〉_d the_o word_n of_o god_n that_o this_o streatnes_n of_o our_o heart_n may_v be_v dilate_v and_o enlarge_v which_o he_o alone_o can_v do_v that_o see_v the_o end_n of_o our_o tentation_n we_o must_v hear_v what_o his_o word_n say_v and_o not_o what_o our_o own_o heart_n say_v which_o only_o see_v and_o fele_v the_o beginning_n of_o tentation_n and_o affliction_n but_o the_o end_n thereof_o it_o can_v not_o see_v therefore_o the_o holy_a ghost_n here_o amplify_v and_o enlarge_v the_o matter_n that_o the_o exhortation_n may_v be_v the_o more_o effectual_a and_o here_o be_v first_o to_o be_v note_v that_o if_o the_o contrary_n be_v not_o that_o be_v to_o say_v no_o tentation_n feel_v or_o peril_n to_o be_v fear_v then_o be_v this_o exhortation_n but_o in_o vain_a for_o if_o tentation_n shall_v have_v a_o end_n as_o soon_o as_o it_o begin_v or_o if_o as_o soon_o as_o we_o feel_v any_o lack_n god_n shall_v give_v we_o that_o we_o desire_v wherefore_o then_o shall_v god_n promise_v any_o thing_n therefore_o neither_o be_v doctrine_n necessary_a in_o those_o thing_n that_o we_o know_v before_o neither_o exhortation_n when_o we_o be_v out_o of_o danger_n and_o feel_v no_o tentation_n therefore_o where_o the_o prophet_n say_v he_o will_v not_o suffer_v thy_o foot_n to_o slip_v he_o plain_o show_v what_o be_v the_o state_n of_o the_o afflict_a for_o when_o they_o feel_v themselves_o to_o be_v in_o danger_n through_o the_o grievousness_n of_o tentation_n their_o heart_n be_v heavy_a and_o careful_a lest_o they_o shall_v perish_v and_o be_v forsake_v of_o the_o lord_n for_o ever_o here_o have_v they_o need_v therefore_o of_o exhortation_n that_o their_o faith_n fail_v not_o or_o be_v not_o utter_o quench_v for_o reason_n can_v judge_v no_o other_o wise_a but_o that_o a_o man_n be_v in_o this_o case_n be_v clean_o reject_v &_o forsake_v of_o god_n and_o after_o his_o own_o sense_n feel_v that_o to_o be_v true_a which_o a_o certain_a soldier_n be_v wont_a to_o say_v that_o there_o be_v none_o which_o suffer_v more_o misery_n or_o be_v in_o great_a danger_n than_o such_o as_o serve_v god_n and_o their_o prince_n faithful_o here_o be_v now_o no_o succour_n but_o to_o fly_v to_o the_o word_n of_o faith_n and_o first_o this_o word_n pronounce_v that_o all_o they_o which_o will_v live_v a_o godly_a life_n in_o christ_n jesus_n shall_v suffer_v trouble_n and_o affliction_n it_o set_v forth_o christ_n for_o a_o ensample_n who_o by_o the_o cross_n enter_v into_o glory_n it_o tell_v we_o that_o we_o must_v be_v make_v like_o unto_o his_o image_n that_o be_v we_o must_v suffer_v with_o he_o if_o we_o look_v to_o be_v glorify_v with_o he_o then_o we_o see_v that_o trouble_n and_o cross_n be_v prepare_v for_o we_o it_o show_v moreover_o what_o be_v to_o be_v do_v and_o what_o remedy_n be_v to_o be_v fight_v in_o such_o affliction_n affliction_n even_o to_o a_o woman_n where_o death_n and_o life_n be_v join_v together_o as_o near_o as_o may_v be_v for_o she_o that_o even_o now_o see_v nothing_o but_o death_n and_o despair_v of_o the_o life_n both_o of_o herself_o and_o of_o her_o child_n as_o soon_o as_o the_o child_n be_v bear_v forget_v all_o her_o sorrow_n past_a saint_n paul_n say_v the_o affliction_n of_o this_o life_n be_v not_o to_o be_v compare_v to_o the_o glory_n which_o shall_v be_v reveil_v upon_o us._n follow_v this_o judgement_n of_o the_o word_n thou_o must_v follow_v and_o not_o thine_o own_o sense_n which_o so_o judge_v of_o the_o cross_n and_o affliction_n that_o of_o a_o molehill_n or_o rather_o of_o a_o mote_n it_o make_v a_o great_a mountain_n so_o blind_a be_v reason_n and_o so_o unable_a to_o judge_v in_o matter_n of_o faith_n for_o that_o which_o god_n count_v but_o as_o a_o moment_n a_o drop_n a_o sparkle_n reason_n judge_v to_o be_v everlasting_a a_o huge_a sea_n and_o a_o terrible_a fire_n but_o thou_o will_v say_v i_o find_v and_o feel_v it_o so_o to_o be_v what_o then_o do_v thou_o feel_v or_o do_v god_n see_v and_o know_v more_o perfect_o think_v thou_o we_o must_v not_o judge_v therefore_o promise_n it_o may_v also_o be_v easy_o understand_v by_o that_o which_o we_o have_v say_v before_o for_o herein_o consist_v all_o this_o heavenly_a wisdom_n that_o we_o do_v utter_o remove_v out_o of_o our_o sight_n what_o so_o ever_o flesh_n can_v comprehend_v and_o believe_v that_o which_o the_o word_n only_o tell_v we_o even_o against_o all_o that_o which_o either_o we_o know_v feel_v or_o see_v and_o therefore_o this_o wisdom_n be_v against_o all_o humane_a wisdom_n and_o reason_n for_o by_o reason_n and_o all_o that_o reason_n can_v comprehend_v we_o feel_v see_v and_o conceive_v all_o thing_n contrary_a to_o that_o which_o faith_n lead_v we_o unto_o he_o that_o lie_v sick_a and_o at_o the_o point_n of_o death_n can_v by_o reason_n conceive_v nothing_o else_o but_o y_fw-fr imagination_n of_o death_n but_o a_o christian_n man_n leave_v that_o imagination_n know_v that_o in_o death_n there_o be_v true_a life_n but_o thou_o will_v say_v he_o see_v and_o feel_v death_n in_o so_o he_o work_v by_o his_o word_n that_o in_o death_n there_o be_v nothing_o but_o life_n they_o then_o which_o stick_n to_o the_o word_n and_o promise_n of_o god_n and_o follow_v the_o same_o do_v find_v it_o true_a which_o david_n say_v 33._o he_o speak_v the_o word_n and_o it_o be_v do_v etc_n etc_n but_o before_o we_o can_v come_v to_o this_o experience_n we_o must_v abide_v some_o trouble_n &_o therefore_o have_v need_n of_o such_o exhortation_n as_o this_o psalm_n here_o set_v forth_o verse_n 1._o they_o that_o trust_v in_o the_o lord_n shall_v be_v as_o mount_n zion_n which_o can_v not_o be_v remove_v but_o remain_v for_o ever_o the_o prophet_n use_v here_o a_o similitude_n of_o mount_n zion_n because_o jerusalem_n wherein_o zion_n stand_v when_o the_o temple_n be_v build_v etc_n etc_n and_o therefore_o david_n in_o a_o other_o psalm_n glory_v on_o this_o wise_a 48._o loe_o the_o king_n be_v gather_v and_o go_v together_o when_o they_o see_v it_o they_o marvel_v they_o be_v astonish_v and_o sudden_o drive_v back_o as_o we_o may_v see_v it_o come_v to_o pass_v under_o ezechias_n in_o that_o great_a destruction_n of_o the_o assyrian_n and_o other_o king_n as_o the_o story_n witness_v which_o show_v that_o jerusalem_n remain_v safe_a in_o all_o danger_n not_o by_o the_o strength_n and_o policy_n of_o the_o inhabitant_n but_o by_o the_o miraculous_a work_n of_o way_n unto_o god_n pronounce_v this_o to_o be_v the_o chief_a anchor_n of_o our_o salvation_n only_o to_o hope_v and_o trust_v in_o the_o lord_n he_o and_o that_o this_o be_v the_o great_a service_n flesh_n although_o they_o be_v compass_v about_o with_o such_o high_a and_o mighty_a mountain_n as_o touch_v the_o spirit_n as_o satan_n can_v never_o surmount_v yet_o touch_v the_o flesh_n and_o the_o old_a man_n they_o lie_v open_a on_o every_o side_n to_o the_o dart_n of_o satan_n and_o of_o the_o world_n for_o god_n by_o these_o mean_n will_v afflict_v and_o exercise_v the_o flesh_n that_o sin_n &_o the_o foolishness_n of_o the_o flesh_n may_v be_v mortify_v in_o they_o and_o that_o spiritual_a wisdom_n and_o the_o inward_a man_n may_v increase_v this_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o we_o be_v according_a to_o the_o flesh_n as_o a_o break_a hedge_n and_o as_o a_o city_n who_o wall_n be_v cast_v down_o and_o so_o lie_v open_a to_o the_o enemy_n on_o every_o side_n wherefore_o there_o be_v no_o sort_n of_o man_n so_o vile_a and_o abject_a which_o do_v not_o think_v that_o they_o may_v do_v what_o they_o listen_v against_o the_o true_a professor_n of_o the_o gospel_n hereof_o come_v such_o intolerable_a injury_n horrible_a blasphemy_n cruel_a torment_n and_o bloody_a slaughter_n of_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n for_o the_o flesh_n have_v no_o wall_n no_o munition_n to_o defend_v it_o but_o the_o spirit_n therefore_o the_o flesh_n be_v in_o danger_n to_o all_o storm_n and_o tempest_n break_a &_o tread_v down_o of_o the_o wicked_a as_o isaiah_n say_v chap._n 51._o which_o have_v say_v unto_o thy_o soul_n bow_v down_o that_o we_o may_v go_v over_o thou_o have_v lay_v thy_o body_n as_o the_o ground_n and_o as_o the_o street_n to_o they_o that_o go_v over_o these_o affliction_n we_o must_v needs_o suffer_v and_o by_o patience_n overcome_v they_o &_o withal_o we_o must_v beware_v that_o by_o these_o outward_a affliction_n the_o inward_a man_n be_v not_o weaken_v or_o overcome_v rest_v in_o this_o assure_a hope_n and_o trust_v that_o the_o lord_n will_v never_o forsake_v we_o but_o that_o we_o be_v in_o the_o bosom_n of_o the_o father_n and_o be_v close_v within_o most_o sure_a and_o strong_a hold_n so_o that_o now_o although_o our_o good_n our_o wife_n our_o child_n yea_o and_o our_o life_n also_o be_v take_v from_o we_o yet_o we_o shall_v never_o be_v spoil_v of_o our_o christ_n by_o who_o we_o be_v so_o sure_o defend_v that_o in_o the_o mid_n of_o all_o our_o tentation_n he_o will_v make_v away_o for_o we_o to_o escape_v or_o else_o geve_v we_o strength_n to_o bear_v they_o thus_o we_o see_v what_o consolation_n the_o holy_a ghost_n set_v forth_o unto_o they_o which_o believe_v the_o word_n for_o unto_o such_o as_o look_v for_o a_o better_a life_n than_o this_o all_o thing_n be_v here_o full_a of_o calamity_n and_o misery_n death_n follow_v death_n as_o paul_n say_v and_o we_o continual_o die_v one_o tentation_n follow_v a_o other_o until_o at_o the_o length_n by_o the_o death_n of_o the_o flesh_n all_o misery_n shall_v cease_v and_o have_v a_o end_n this_o verse_n therefore_o make_v much_o for_o our_o comfort_n admonish_v we_o that_o we_o must_v suffer_v many_o trouble_n yet_o so_o that_o at_o the_o length_n we_o shall_v be_v safe_a and_o set_v at_o liberty_n from_o they_o all_o though_o not_o in_o this_o life_n yet_o in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v and_o in_o eternal_a life_n and_o why_o shall_v we_o not_o thus_o bold_o promise_v unto_o ourselves_o remain_v under_o this_o diligent_a custody_n of_o the_o tentation_n which_o tentation_n whether_o they_o be_v within_o in_o the_o spirit_n or_o without_o in_o the_o flesh_n the_o time_n shall_v come_v when_o we_o through_o christ_n shall_v have_v full_a victory_n hereof_o as_o this_o verse_n full_a of_o sweet_a consolation_n do_v promise_n unto_o us._n notwithstanding_o this_o promise_n seem_v incredible_a both_o to_o we_o which_o suffer_v and_o the_o wicked_a for_o see_v he_o have_v say_v i_o be_o the_o lord_n thy_o god_n he_o will_v never_o suffer_v that_o which_o be_v his_o own_o to_o be_v wrest_v either_o by_o the_o world_n or_o by_o the_o gate_n of_o hell_n out_o of_o his_o hand_n if_o he_o then_o abide_v and_o continue_v they_o shall_v also_o continue_v for_o ever_o which_o be_v he_o thus_o to_o believe_v and_o thus_o to_o lay_v hold_n on_o thing_n invisible_a be_v true_a divinity_n and_o true_a spiritual_a wisdom_n in_o deed_n whereupon_o we_o may_v ground_v this_o proposition_n out_o of_o the_o invisible_a counsel_n of_o god_n god_n hate_v the_o wicked_a &_o love_v the_o just_a ergo_fw-la he_o will_v damn_v and_o destroy_v the_o wicked_a and_o will_v deliver_v and_o save_v the_o just_a and_o here_o we_o see_v that_o which_o be_v the_o chief_a thing_n in_o all_o the_o psalm_n and_o prophet_n to_o spring_v out_o of_o the_o first_o precept_n i_o be_o the_o lord_n thy_o god._n now_o have_v we_o to_o learn_v how_o we_o may_v apply_v this_o verse_n right_o and_o to_o our_o comfort_n for_o true_a divinity_n consist_v in_o use_n and_o practice_v we_o be_v vex_v on_o every_o side_n with_o cruel_a bishop_n wicked_a prince_n and_o other_o which_o hate_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o the_o doctrine_n which_o we_o profess_v but_o these_o be_v very_a trifle_n if_o you_o compare_v they_o with_o those_o vexation_n which_o satan_n sin_n and_o our_o own_o infirmity_n raise_v up_o in_o our_o conscience_n we_o must_v learn_v therefore_o thus_o to_o judge_v of_o all_o these_o thing_n that_o they_o be_v the_o rod_n or_o sceptre_n of_o the_o wicked_a and_o to_o set_v the_o lord_n against_o they_o reveal_v his_o will_n here_o in_o his_o word_n and_o pronounce_v that_o he_o will_v not_o suffer_v the_o sceptre_n of_o the_o wicked_a to_o rest_v upon_o the_o godly_a see_v then_o the_o same_o prince_n promise_v thus_o much_o unto_o we_o which_o have_v all_o thing_n in_o his_o hand_n what_o can_v we_o require_v more_o for_o the_o will_n of_o god_n be_v certain_a that_o though_o he_o suffer_v we_o to_o be_v afflict_v yet_o will_v he_o not_o see_v we_o tread_v under_o foot_n or_o perish_v thus_o must_v we_o and_o rule_v which_o be_v for_o the_o amendment_n and_o correction_n of_o such_o as_o do_v offend_v so_o be_v it_o take_v in_o the_o 110._o psalm_n the_o lord_n shall_v send_v forth_o the_o rod_n of_o thy_o power_n out_o of_o zion_n that_o be_v to_o say_v thy_o kingdom_n for_o there_o he_o signify_v such_o a_o rod_n whereby_o kingdom_n and_o people_n be_v govern_v on_o this_o wise_a the_o
holy_a ghost_n permit_v here_o to_o the_o wicked_a dominion_n and_o tyranny_n over_o the_o godly_a which_o they_o be_v compel_v to_o suffer_v like_a as_o we_o be_v compel_v not_o only_o to_o see_v consume_v for_o he_o be_v a_o murderer_n and_o seek_v by_o all_o mean_n how_o to_o destroy_v we_o it_o be_v necessary_a then_o for_o we_o to_o have_v our_o sense_n exercise_v and_o our_o mind_n occupy_v in_o the_o meditation_n of_o the_o word_n and_o prayer_n that_o the_o enemy_n find_v we_o not_o unarm_v or_o unprovided_a which_o so_o busy_o seek_v to_o spoil_v we_o of_o this_o redemption_n i_o also_o be_o a_o divine_a which_o by_o great_a trouble_n have_v get_v some_o knowledge_n and_o understanding_n of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o yet_o be_o not_o i_o so_o lift_v up_o through_o this_o gift_n but_o that_o i_o do_v daily_o exercise_v myself_o even_o â—mongest_v the_o child_n in_o the_o catechism_n in_o secret_a meditation_n i_o mean_v of_o the_o commandment_n the_o article_n of_o the_o belief_n and_o the_o lord_n prayer_n etc_n etc_n with_o a_o earnest_n and_o attentive_a mind_n not_o only_o recount_v with_o myself_o the_o word_n but_o observe_v and_o weigh_v also_o what_o every_o word_n signify_v and_o doubtless_o when_o i_o be_o not_o thus_o exercise_v but_o be_o occupy_v with_o other_o matter_n i_o find_v a_o manifest_a discommodity_n thereby_o for_o
call_v grace_n heaven_n itself_o by_o the_o which_o we_o have_v a_o open_a passage_n unto_o heaven_n and_o the_o which_o we_o can_v never_o attain_v unto_o by_o the_o law_n by_o work_n or_o by_o our_o own_o endeavour_n but_o rather_o as_o a_o most_o large_a heaven_n it_o receive_v we_o beleve_v that_o by_o adoption_n we_o be_v make_v righteous_a before_o god_n through_o christ._n hereby_o we_o may_v see_v what_o the_o intent_n and_o purpose_n of_o the_o prophet_n be_v in_o this_o psalm_n namely_o to_o teach_v we_o the_o true_a way_n to_o righteousness_n life_n and_o salvation_n again_o to_o show_v we_o the_o way_n how_o to_o escape_v death_n sin_n and_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n that_o out_o of_o this_o life_n we_o may_v pass_v to_o life_n everlasting_a and_o in_o teach_v of_o these_o thing_n he_o show_v his_o own_o experience_n and_o lay_v open_a unto_o we_o his_o own_o heart_n which_o the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v exercise_v and_o school_v with_o many_o tentation_n that_o so_o he_o may_v attain_v to_o this_o doctrine_n wherein_o he_o go_v about_o here_o to_o enstruct_v we_o also_o the_o sum_n whereof_o be_v that_o he_o rest_v whole_o in_o the_o hope_n of_o god_n mercy_n and_o in_o the_o sure_a trust_n of_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o his_o sin_n but_o these_o thing_n shall_v more_o clear_o appear_v hereafter_o in_o expound_v of_o the_o psalm_n verse_n 1._o out_o of_o the_o depth_n have_v i_o call_v unto_o thou_o oh_o lord_n it_o may_v seem_v that_o the_o prophet_n use_v here_o more_o word_n than_o need_v but_o he_o that_o consider_v well_o the_o cause_n which_o force_v but_o he_o set_v forth_o here_o the_o grief_n of_o a_o vex_a and_o wound_a conscience_n &_o the_o very_a sorrow_n of_o death_n when_o a_o man_n feel_v his_o heart_n as_o it_o be_v oppress_v with_o desperation_n think_v himself_o forsake_v of_o god_n when_o he_o see_v his_o own_o unworthiness_n and_o desert_n accuse_v before_o god_n as_o a_o terrible_a judge_n yea_o when_o it_o seem_v unto_o he_o that_o god_n have_v not_o only_o forsake_v he_o but_o cast_v he_o away_o for_o ever_o hate_v &_o abhor_v he_o for_o his_o sin_n these_o tentation_n be_v much_o more_o terrible_a than_o those_o which_o man_n common_o fall_v into_o for_o they_o be_v not_o without_o danger_n of_o soul_n &_o eternal_a salvation_n therefore_o he_o use_v here_o this_o manner_n of_o speech_n say_v out_o of_o the_o depth_n i_o call_v unto_o thou_o etc_n etc_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v great_a be_v the_o trouble_n wherewith_o i_o be_o oppress_v for_o i_o feel_v my_o own_o sin_n and_o the_o just_a wrath_n of_o god_n upon_o i_o for_o the_o same_o neither_o can_v i_o find_v relief_n or_o comfort_n to_o my_o restless_a &_o afflict_a soul_n against_o the_o malice_n of_o man_n wherewith_o they_o molest_v and_o vex_v we_o there_o be_v remedy_n to_o be_v find_v but_o this_o wound_n be_v uncurable_a except_o the_o lord_n send_v help_v and_o succour_v from_o above_o and_o in_o deed_n such_o trouble_n as_o the_o godly_a be_v common_o exercise_v withal_o as_o the_o loss_n of_o good_n wife_n child_n &_o such_o other_o may_v yet_o be_v overcome_v or_o bear_v with_o patience_n moreover_o in_o those_o which_o be_v count_v inferior_a sin_n as_o the_o offence_n of_o youth_n the_o deject_v &_o break_v hearted_a may_v more_o easy_o be_v raise_v up_o again_o but_o these_o affliction_n seem_v to_o they_o and_o be_v in_o deed_n untollerable_a when_o they_o feel_v themselves_o oppress_v with_o such_o horrible_a and_o hellish_a cogitation_n that_o they_o can_v see_v nothing_o else_o but_o that_o they_o be_v cast_v away_o from_o god_n for_o ever_o they_o therefore_o that_o feel_v such_o bitter_a tentation_n god._n have_v here_o a_o example_n that_o david_n in_o himself_o feel_v and_o have_v experience_n of_o the_o like_a for_o it_o make_v the_o tentation_n much_o more_o grevous_a when_o they_o which_o be_v thus_o afflict_v feel_v that_o as_o to_o they_o it_o seem_v which_o none_o else_o do_v feel_v but_o they_o alone_o we_o must_v learn_v therefore_o that_o even_o the_o godly_a have_v ever_o suffer_v the_o same_o affliction_n and_o have_v be_v beat_v down_o even_o to_o death_n with_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o law_n and_o sin_n as_o we_o may_v see_v here_o by_o the_o example_n of_o david_n cry_v even_o as_o it_o be_v out_o of_o hell_n and_o say_n out_o of_o the_o depth_n do_v i_o cry_v unto_o thou_o oh_o lord_n etc_n etc_n but_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o we_o to_o know_v that_o we_o sustain_v not_o these_o trouble_n and_o tentation_n alone_o but_o we_o must_v also_o learn_v the_o way_n whereby_o such_o as_o have_v suffer_v the_o like_a tentation_n have_v be_v raise_v up_o again_o and_o here_o you_o see_v david_n what_o he_o do_v you_o see_v whither_o he_o fly_v in_o his_o great_a distress_n he_o despair_v not_o but_o cry_v unto_o the_o lord_n as_o one_o yet_o hope_v assure_o to_o find_v relief_n and_o comfort_n rest_v thou_o also_o in_o this_o hope_n and_o do_v as_o who_o have_v say_v that_o a_o trouble_a spirit_n be_v a_o sacrifice_n unto_o he_o it_o be_v expedient_a also_o to_o have_v some_o faithful_a brother_n at_o hand_n which_o may_v comfort_v we_o in_o these_o bitter_a conflict_n for_o god_n will_v that_o in_o his_o church_n one_o shall_v help_v to_o comfort_v a_o other_o as_o member_n knit_v together_o in_o one_o body_n and_o he_o have_v promise_v that_o when_o two_o be_v gather_v together_o in_o his_o name_n he_o will_v be_v the_o third_o amongst_o they_o and_o doubtless_o nothing_o comfort_v a_o afflict_a conscience_n so_o much_o as_o to_o hear_v some_o godly_a brother_n declare_v out_o of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n that_o such_o terror_n and_o affliction_n be_v send_v of_o god_n not_o to_o destroy_v we_o but_o to_o humble_v we_o thereby_o to_o make_v we_o to_o acknowledge_v the_o great_a mercy_n of_o god_n offer_v unto_o we_o and_o to_o receive_v the_o same_o with_o thankful_a heart_n but_o if_o in_o this_o distress_n we_o be_v destitute_a of_o the_o help_n of_o such_o faithful_a brethren_n we_o must_v then_o do_v as_o davidâ—id_v â—id_z in_o this_o place_n that_o be_v we_o must_v cry_v unto_o the_o lord_n &_o pray_v madness_n for_o if_o patience_n suffer_v any_o thing_n it_o come_v of_o a_o certain_a desperation_n as_o when_o a_o man_n thus_o think_v with_o himself_o all_o that_o i_o suffer_v be_v but_o in_o vain_a this_o patience_n be_v turn_v into_o fury_n and_o be_v oppress_v with_o desperation_n â–ª_o but_o christian_a patience_n will_v not_o suffer_v itself_o to_o be_v oppress_v but_o continual_o take_v hold_v upon_o hope_n whereby_o at_o length_n it_o prevail_v and_o get_v the_o victory_n it_o be_v a_o hard_a thing_n not_o to_o be_v discourage_v with_o such_o trouble_n as_o daily_o happen_v in_o matter_n pertain_v to_o the_o common_a course_n of_o this_o life_n but_o patient_o to_o endure_v those_o affliction_n which_o david_n by_o his_o own_o example_n show_v that_o christian_n which_o have_v already_o receive_v the_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n must_v suffer_v to_o have_v a_o steadfast_a hope_n in_o the_o bitter_a vexation_n of_o sin_n and_o accusation_n of_o conscience_n and_o patient_o to_o suffer_v all_o other_o affliction_n wherewith_o satan_n vex_v and_o torment_v the_o believe_a heart_n this_o be_v in_o deed_n a_o divine_a and_o a_o heavenly_a virtue_n and_o such_o a_o conflict_n that_o god_n have_v promise_v unto_o it_o a_o incorruptible_a crown_n of_o glory_n now_o ensue_v a_o exhortation_n that_o we_o shall_v follow_v this_o example_n of_o david_n and_o embrace_v man_n whether_o they_o have_v need_n of_o comfort_n or_o succour_v in_o mind_n or_o in_o body_n who_o see_v not_o how_o far_o faith_n excel_v charity_n for_o how_o great_a a_o difference_n be_v there_o between_o god_n &_o man_n between_o corporal_a necessity_n &_o eternal_a death_n these_o be_v therefore_o the_o exercise_n of_o faith_n even_o in_o the_o great_a danger_n to_o fight_v continual_o against_o satan_n in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n for_o as_o i_o say_v before_o our_o â—ruel_a enemy_n will_v give_v we_o no_o breathe_n no_o time_n of_o rest_n wherefore_o albeit_o the_o charity_n be_v not_o only_o a_o goodly_a virtue_n but_o also_o extend_v far_o in_o comparison_n of_o other_o moral_a virtue_n yet_o be_v faith_n without_o all_o comparison_n a_o far_o more_o mercy_n of_o god_n in_o this_o conflict_n because_o the_o mind_n do_v not_o so_o soon_o feel_v those_o comfort_n which_o the_o word_n promise_v and_o faith_n believe_v as_o it_o will_v do_v it_o be_v ready_a to_o despair_v against_o this_o tentation_n david_n arm_v we_o and_o warn_v we_o to_o be_v mindful_a that_o we_o must_v wait_v on_o the_o lord_n and_o never_o depart_v from_o the_o word_n or_o believe_v any_o thing_n against_o the_o word_n and_o he_o show_v the_o cause_n why_o for_o with_o the_o lord_n say_v he_o be_v mercy_n he_o the_o flesh_n in_o tentation_n and_o affliction_n think_v that_o with_o the_o lord_n there_o be_v nothing_o but_o wrath_n the_o holy_a ghost_n therefore_o comfort_v we_o and_o go_v about_o to_o pluck_v this_o opinion_n out_o of_o our_o heart_n &_o pronounce_v that_o there_o be_v mercy_n and_o goodness_n with_o the_o lord_n if_o we_o can_v but_o only_o wait_v on_o the_o lord_n and_o put_v our_o trust_n in_o he_o this_o testimony_n of_o conscience_n and_o of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n we_o have_v great_a need_n of_o for_o if_o we_o follow_v our_o own_o sense_n we_o shall_v be_v deceive_v and_o find_v in_o ourselves_o the_o contrary_n but_o we_o may_v not_o judge_v of_o these_o matter_n according_a to_o our_o own_o sense_n or_o as_o we_o feel_v in_o ourselves_o but_o we_o must_v stand_v to_o the_o word_n and_o thus_o think_v with_o ourselves_o that_o these_o be_v matter_n of_o faith_n and_o not_o of_o our_o own_o sense_n and_o feeling_n for_o to_o believe_v be_v not_o to_o feel_v not_o because_o these_o thing_n shall_v never_o be_v feel_v which_o we_o now_o believe_v but_o because_o faith_n must_v go_v before_o feeling_n and_o experience_n and_o we_o must_v believe_v the_o word_n although_o we_o feel_v in_o our_o own_o heart_n and_o judgement_n never_o so_o much_o to_o the_o contrary_n as_o when_o our_o heart_n oppress_v with_o calamity_n do_v think_v god_n to_o be_v angry_a with_o we_o not_o to_o care_v for_o we_o but_o to_o hate_v we_o then_o faith_n clean_a contrary_n must_v thus_o assure_v itself_o that_o with_o god_n there_o be_v neither_o anger_n nor_o hatred_n that_o he_o neither_o think_v of_o punishment_n nor_o offence_n but_o although_o he_o suffer_v we_o to_o be_v afflict_v yet_o he_o do_v it_o not_o to_o the_o end_n to_o destroy_v we_o for_o with_o he_o say_v the_o psalm_n be_v mercy_n enemy_n in_o punish_v we_o yet_o let_v we_o not_o yield_v so_o much_o to_o our_o own_o sense_n and_o feeling_n as_o to_o the_o write_a word_n and_o to_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o pronounce_v that_o hope_v for_o deliverance_n at_o his_o hand_n in_o his_o good_a time_n like_a as_o paul_n also_o write_v to_o the_o roman_n will_v we_o to_o rejoice_v even_o in_o our_o affliction_n and_o tentation_n for_o if_o god_n do_v not_o love_v we_o satan_n will_v not_o hate_v we_o if_o we_o be_v not_o partaker_n of_o life_n our_o enemy_n will_v not_o persecute_v we_o with_o death_n so_o those_o which_o
