all_o that_o do_v not_o arrive_v at_o that_o justification_n and_o acceptation_n with_o god_n which_o the_o gentile_n attain_v and_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o they_o do_v not_o seek_v it_o in_o the_o gospel-way_n in_o which_o the_o gentile_n find_v it_o they_o shall_v have_v let_v go_v the_o doctrine_n of_o moses_n and_o have_v embrace_v the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n and_o have_v reckon_v themselves_o but_o in_o the_o same_o capacity_n with_o the_o gentile_n for_o all_o their_o work_n of_o the_o law_n and_o have_v say_v as_o some_o of_o they_o do_v we_o believe_v that_o through_o the_o grace_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n we_o shall_v be_v save_v even_o as_o they_o act_v 15.11_o but_o instead_o of_o this_o they_o stumble_v at_o that_o stumbling-stone_n christ_n jesus_n and_o he_o crucify_v and_o the_o offer_n of_o salvation_n by_o he_o and_o do_v adhere_v unto_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n for_o all_o thing_n pertain_v to_o salvation_n and_o will_v have_v justification_n upon_o the_o law_n term_n this_o run_v in_o their_o mind_n if_o a_o man_n do_v those_o thing_n he_o shall_v live_v in_o they_o and_o so_o venture_v all_o upon_o that_o score_n it_o be_v quite_o beyond_o their_o expectation_n that_o the_o messiah_n when_o ever_o he_o shall_v come_v shall_v turn_v they_o out_o of_o their_o way_n of_o sacrifice_v by_o become_v a_o sacrifice_n himself_o or_o that_o their_o expectation_n of_o remission_n of_o sin_n shall_v be_v take_v off_o the_o former_a and_o place_v on_o the_o latter_a and_o therefore_o they_o cleave_v to_o the_o letter_n of_o the_o law_n for_o eternal_a salvation_n which_o so_o far_o be_v ordain_v by_o god_n but_o for_o a_o temporal_a and_o reject_v christ_n and_o the_o term_n of_o salvation_n by_o he_o which_o the_o law_n point_v they_o to_o in_o the_o spiritual_a signification_n of_o it_o of_o which_o they_o be_v whole_o ignorant_a hence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o for_o all_o their_o labour_a seek_v and_o strive_v after_o righteousness_n justification_n and_o salvation_n yet_o they_o miss_v it_o as_o seek_v it_o out_o of_o god_n way_n upon_o their_o own_o term_n not_o go_n gal._n 2.21_o for_o if_o righteousness_n come_v by_o the_o law_n than_o christ_n be_v dead_a in_o vain_a how_o can_v that_o be_v but_o that_o they_o do_v attribute_n and_o ascribe_v the_o same_o atone_a virtue_n and_o sin-purging_a efficacy_n unto_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n which_o the_o gospel_n do_v attribute_n unto_o the_o blood_n of_o jesus_n and_o then_o indeed_o if_o it_o have_v be_v so_o as_o they_o suppose_v it_o be_v that_o sacrifice_n or_o any_o other_o work_v of_o the_o law_n can_v have_v purge_v sin_n so_o as_o christ_n do_v by_o his_o death_n and_o blood_n than_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n will_v have_v be_v in_o vain_a god_n will_v never_o have_v put_v himself_o to_o that_o charge_n as_o to_o give_v his_o son_n to_o death_n to_o take_v away_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n if_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n have_v be_v a_o competent_a mean_n to_o bring_v it_o about_o if_o there_o have_v be_v a_o law_n say_v the_o same_o apostle_n which_o can_v have_v give_v life_n very_o righteousness_n shall_v have_v be_v by_o the_o law_n gal._n 3.21_o if_o the_o law_n and_o the_o wotk_v therein_o command_v can_v have_v do_v the_o same_o thing_n towards_o the_o confer_v of_o life_n and_o salvation_n love_n justice_n and_o

have_v confidence_n of_o salvation_n because_o they_o believe_v though_o they_o do_v not_o indeed_o believe_v with_o that_o belief_n unto_o which_o salvation_n be_v promise_v do_v direct_o tread_v in_o the_o step_n of_o some_o in_o the_o apostle_n day_n who_o will_v needs_o be_v confident_a of_o salvation_n though_o all_o the_o faith_n they_o have_v be_v not_o of_o that_o power_n as_o to_o produce_v a_o holy_a life_n and_o the_o apostle_n know_v the_o danger_n of_o such_o a_o confidence_n labour_v exceed_o to_o take_v they_o off_o it_o and_o to_o build_v they_o upon_o a_o better_a bottom_n this_o be_v the_o business_n in_o which_o the_o apostle_n james_n labour_v so_o mighty_o in_o his_o epistle_n and_o we_o may_v easy_o perceive_v what_o disease_n be_v among_o the_o christian_n by_o the_o remedy_n which_o this_o servant_n of_o the_o lord_n apply_v for_o their_o cure_n viz._n a_o inordinate_a love_n of_o the_o world_n which_o manifest_v itself_o in_o a_o adulterous_a and_o too_o near_o a_o compliance_n therewith_o chap._n 4._o beginning_n and_o thereupon_o they_o despise_v the_o poor_a saint_n and_o prefer_v man_n less_o worthy_a if_o they_o be_v rich_a chap._n 2._o their_o want_n of_o the_o true_a christian_n humility_n and_o love_n break_v out_o into_o bitter_a envy_v and_o strife_n and_o a_o undue_a judge_n and_o censure_v one_o of_o another_o chap._n 3._o throughout_o and_o yet_o for_o all_o these_o unchristian_a and_o unsaint-like_a deportment_n they_o be_v ready_a to_o glory_v as_o if_o they_o be_v the_o know_a man_n and_o man_n of_o the_o right_a religion_n wherein_o salvation_n be_v to_o be_v have_v and_o that_o it_o do_v belong_v to_o they_o in_o opposition_n to_o which_o vain-confidence_n and_o confident_a boast_n he_o express_v himself_o thus_o chap._n 3.14_o 15._o but_o if_o you_o have_v bitter_a envy_v and_o strife_n in_o your_o heart_n glory_v not_o and_o lie_v not_o against_o the_o truth_n this_o wisdom_n descend_v not_o from_o above_o but_o be_v earthly_a sensual_a devilish_a for_o they_o to_o glory_n of_o their_o religion_n and_o of_o their_o wisdom_n and_o knowledge_n and_o yet_o to_o be_v man_n of_o such_o a_o unchristian_a carriage_n they_o do_v but_o lie_v against_o the_o truth_n which_o they_o pretend_v to_o have_v on_o their_o side_n but_o indeed_o be_v point_n blank_a against_o they_o but_o if_o any_o man_n will_v approve_v himself_o a_o wise_a man_n indeed_o endue_v with_o the_o christian_n knowledge_n of_o the_o right_a kind_n the_o apostle_n tell_v they_o it_o must_v be_v by_o show_v out_o of_o a_o good_a conversation_n his_o work_n with_o meekness_n of_o wisdom_n v._o 13._o again_o chap._n 1.26_o he_o have_v likewise_o encounter_v that_o vain-confidence_n that_o be_v build_v upon_o a_o form_n of_o knowledge_n faith_n and_o profession_n without_o the_o life_n and_o power_n of_o it_o say_v if_o any_o man_n among_o you_o seem_v to_o be_v religious_a and_o bridle_v not_o his_o tongue_n but_o deceive_v his_o own_o heart_n this_o man_n religion_n be_v vain_a man_n that_o shall_v give_v way_n to_o the_o flesh_n though_o but_o in_o one_o thing_n as_o for_o instance_n a_o licentious_a liberty_n to_o the_o tongue_n not_o endeavour_v by_o watchfulness_n heed_n and_o circumspection_n to_o conform_v to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o lord_n which_o forbid_v not_o only_o lie_v revile_v backbiting_a slander_v corrupt_a and_o unclean_a communication_n but_o also_o foolish_a talk_n and_o jest_v yea_o every_o idle_a word_n how_o religious_a soever_o they_o may_v otherwise_o seem_v to_o themselves_o upon_o account_n of_o their_o formal_a knowledge_n and_o faith_n of_o external_a devotion_n to_o the_o ordinance_n yet_o the_o apostle_n testify_v as_o from_o the_o lord_n that_o such_o do_v but_o deceive_v their_o own_o heart_n befool_v themselves_o with_o a_o vain_a confidence_n of_o be_v religious_a man_n and_o of_o be_v accept_v with_o god_n as_o such_o and_o that_o such_o man_n religion_n be_v vain_a that_o be_v as_o to_o the_o end_n for_o which_o the_o true_a religion_n serve_v not_o as_o if_o all_o their_o religion_n be_v make_v up_o of_o vain_a notion_n but_o though_o they_o have_v never_o so_o sound_a a_o knowledge_n and_o right_a belief_n of_o many_o excellent_a gospel-truth_n and_o though_o they_o add_v thereto_o the_o do_v of_o many_o thing_n yea_o how_o seem_o religious_a soever_o they_o be_v upon_o what_o account_n soever_o yet_o the_o want_n but_o of_o this_o one_o thing_n a_o care_n to_o bridle_v the_o tongue_n will_v render_v all_o a_o man_n religion_n and_o all_o his_o confidence_n of_o salvation_n build_v thereupon_o but_o vain_a &_o unprofitable_a touch_v the_o end_n of_o religion_n the_o end_n of_o faith_n which_o be_v the_o salvation_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o if_o he_o have_v never_o have_v any_o religion_n nor_o seem_a show_n of_o it_o at_o all_o yet_o once_o more_o james_n 2.14_o to_o the_o same_o purpose_n thus_o what_o do_v it_o profit_v my_o brethren_n though_o a_o man_n say_v he_o have_v faith_n and_o have_v not_o work_n can_v faith_n save_v he_o that_o be_v can_v such_o a_o faith_n save_o he_o a_o form_n of_o speech_n emphatical_o deny_v the_o thing_n interogated_a like_a unto_o that_o afterward_o chap._n 3.11_o 12._o do_v a_o fountain_n send_v forth_o at_o the_o same_o place_n sweet_a water_n and_o bitter_a can_v the_o figtree_n my_o brethren_n bear_v olive_n berry_n either_o a_o vine_n figgs_n why_o not_o it_o can_v no_o more_o can_v that_o faith_n save_v that_o have_v not_o think_v it_o can_v he_o be_v not_o blame_v their_o faith_n as_o if_o not_o place_v upon_o a_o right_a object_n or_o as_o if_o there_o be_v not_o a_o real_a close_n with_o that_o object_n in_o point_n of_o assent_n in_o the_o begin_n of_o this_o chapter_n he_o clear_o suppose_v they_o to_o have_v the_o faith_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n only_o there_o caution_n they_o not_o to_o yoke_v or_o couple_v their_o faith_n with_o a_o unchristian_a carriage_n assure_v they_o by_o the_o tenor_n of_o his_o discourse_n throughout_o this_o chapter_n especial_o from_o the_o fourteen_o verse_n to_o the_o end_n that_o a_o faith_n so_o yoke_v and_o want_v its_o true_a yoke-fellow_n and_o companion_n the_o gospel_n conversation_n which_o he_o call_v by_o the_o name_n of_o work_n will_v not_o profit_v he_o that_o have_v it_o which_o unprofitableness_n of_o that_o faith_n which_o have_v not_o work_n he_o further_o illustrate_v by_o way_n of_o comparison_n verse_n 15_o 16._o if_o a_o brother_n or_o sister_n be_v naked_a or_o destitute_a of_o daily_a food_n and_o one_o of_o you_o say_v unto_o they_o depart_v in_o peace_n be_v you_o warm_v and_o fill_v notwithstanding_o you_o give_v they_o not_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v needful_a to_o the_o body_n what_o do_v it_o profit_n nothing_o at_o all_o that_o be_v to_o the_o fill_n or_o warm_v of_o the_o necessitous_a person_n even_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n than_o a_o parcel_n of_o good_a word_n will_v feed_v and_o cloth_n fill_v and_o warm_v the_o needy_a brother_n and_o indigent_a sister_n when_o a_o contribution_n of_o a_o real_a relief_n be_v want_v though_o i_o can_v speak_v with_o the_o tongue_n of_o man_n and_o angel_n and_o have_v all_o faith_n so_o that_o i_o can_v remove_v mountain_n and_o have_v not_o love_n it_o will_v profit_v i_o nothing_o 1_o cor._n 13.1_o 2._o and_o whereas_o he_o say_v that_o faith_n be_v dead_a be_v alone_o he_o plain_o suppose_v that_o faith_n may_v be_v alone_o without_o the_o company_n of_o work_n a_o faith_n that_o be_v true_o so_o in_o its_o kind_n a_o faith_n that_o be_v act_v on_o a_o right_a object_n but_o where_o ever_o it_o be_v alone_o there_o it_o be_v dead_a that_o be_v it_o be_v unprofitable_a as_o to_o the_o end_n for_o which_o faith_n be_v appoint_v viz._n to_o justify_v

the_o state_n and_o condition_n of_o sensual_a and_o carnal_a christian_n who_o live_v in_o such_o time_n and_o place_n as_o we_o now_o do_v in_o which_o man_n may_v believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o public_o own_o their_o faith_n especial_o if_o it_o put_v they_o upon_o no_o extraordinary_a strain_n of_o self-denial_n without_o run_v any_o hazard_n of_o persecution_n but_o shall_v rather_o expose_v themselves_o to_o suffer_v in_o case_n they_o shall_v not_o own_o the_o faith_n which_o be_v the_o religion_n of_o the_o country_n and_o in_o such_o place_n faith_n such_o as_o it_o be_v be_v as_o common_a as_o silver_n be_v in_o the_o day_n of_o solomon_n all_o man_n in_o a_o manner_n do_v believe_v that_o christ_n die_v for_o sinner_n and_o that_o salvation_n be_v to_o be_v have_v by_o believe_v in_o his_o name_n &_o that_o their_o believe_v will_v justify_v they_o &_o without_o work_n too_o as_o they_o have_v be_v general_o teach_v which_o be_v their_o snare_n hereupon_o they_o live_v they_o die_v in_o hope_n of_o salvation_n upon_o this_o very_a account_n that_o they_o do_v believe_v though_o there_o be_v too_o much_o cause_n to_o fear_v that_o the_o conversation_n and_o temper_n i_o will_v i_o can_v not_o say_v of_o far_o the_o great_a part_n even_o of_o these_o do_v give_v too_o loud_a a_o testimony_n that_o their_o faith_n be_v but_o the_o dead_a faith_n they_o be_v not_o renew_v to_o god_n and_o bear_v again_o by_o it_o and_o consequent_o that_o their_o confidence_n of_o salvation_n by_o christ_n be_v but_o a_o vain_a confidence_n and_o such_o as_o will_v deceive_v they_o i_o profess_v it_o be_v a_o very_a sad_a thing_n so_o to_o say_v and_o that_o which_o occasion_n many_o a_o sorrowful_a thought_n to_o my_o soul_n and_o my_o love_n to_o man_n and_o my_o desire_n after_o their_o salvation_n exceed_o incline_v i_o to_o hope_v better_a thing_n concern_v these_o man_n of_o who_o i_o speak_v if_o i_o have_v but_o any_o scriptural_a ground_n to_o relieve_v such_o a_o hope_n but_o i_o be_o either_o quite_o mistake_v in_o the_o nature_n of_o holiness_n and_o of_o the_o new_a creature_n or_o else_o such_o scripture_n as_o do_v positive_o affirm_v that_o without_o holiness_n no_o man_n shall_v see_v the_o lord_n and_o that_o except_o a_o man_n be_v bear_v again_o he_o can_v see_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n that_o neither_o circumcision_n nor_o uncircumcision_n avail_v but_o a_o new_a creature_n with_o many_o the_o like_a i_o fear_v do_v fast_o bar_v the_o door_n of_o life_n against_o the_o confidence_n of_o a_o vast_a multitude_n of_o professor_n of_o belief_n in_o jesus_n unless_o the_o generality_n of_o those_o i_o know_v not_o be_v better_o than_o very_a many_o of_o those_o i_o know_v sect._n 8_o not_o to_o multiply_v more_o scripture_n to_o demonstrate_v that_o man_n belief_n in_o christ_n and_o reliance_n upon_o he_o for_o salvation_n will_v not_o avail_v they_o unless_o it_o draw_v the_o soul_n in_o love_n and_o
