torment_v the_o mind_n when_o a_o man_n begin_v already_o to_o suffer_v what_o he_o do_v fear_n but_o i_o know_v not_o whether_o it_o be_v worth_a the_o while_n to_o dispute_v whether_o despair_n be_v proper_o in_o the_o damn_a yea_o or_o no._n this_o i_o be_o sure_a of_o that_o the_o damn_a know_v that_o they_o be_v miserable_a and_o they_o know_v that_o this_o misery_n shall_v continue_v always_o they_o know_v that_o it_o shall_v not_o be_v otherwise_o with_o they_o than_o now_o it_o be_v and_o this_o be_v equivalent_a unto_o despair_n but_o this_o be_v rather_o a_o adjunct_n of_o their_o torment_n and_o punishment_n than_o the_o substance_n of_o it_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o necessary_a christ_n shall_v undergo_v it_o 2._o we_o say_v that_o despair_n as_o it_o be_v opposite_a to_o the_o grace_n of_o hope_n so_o it_o can_v not_o be_v in_o christ_n because_o despair_v at_o it_o be_v opposite_a to_o hope_v speak_v a_o deordination_n and_o it_o will_v suppose_v some_o sin_n which_o sense_n and_o feel_n of_o god_n love_n but_o complain_v that_o he_o be_v forsake_v yet_o he_o call_v god_n his_o god_n and_o that_o manifest_v his_o faith_n and_o where_o there_o be_v faith_n there_o will_v be_v hope_n for_o hope_n be_v the_o daughter_n of_o faith_n therefore_o despair_n be_v not_o in_o christ_n but_o though_o christ_n do_v not_o suffer_v some_o circumstance_n and_o adjunct_n of_o punishment_n that_o the_o damn_a suffer_v yet_o christ_n suffer_v the_o substance_n of_o what_o we_o be_v to_o suffer_v and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o i_o must_v now_o begin_v to_o speak_v unto_o and_o here_o i_o be_o to_o show_v how_o it_o be_v that_o christ_n suffer_v the_o substance_n of_o what_o we_o ought_v to_o have_v suffer_v 1._o christ_n make_v himself_o passable_a and_o mortal_a for_o our_o sake_n that_o be_v he_o make_v himself_o subject_a to_o suffer_v and_o death_n for_o our_o sake_n sin_n be_v the_o inlet_n of_o suffering_n and_o death_n have_v there_o be_v no_o sin_n there_o have_v be_v no_o suffering_n or_o death_n it_o be_v sin_n that_o bring_v in_o both_o suffering_n and_o death_n when_o man_n have_v sin_v god_n first_o say_v to_o the_o woman_n i_o will_v great_o multiply_v thy_o sorrow_n and_o thy_o conception_n in_o sorrow_n shall_v thou_o bring_v forth_o child_n gen._n 3.16_o to_o the_o man_n he_o say_v curse_v be_v the_o ground_n for_o thy_o sake_n please_v to_o have_v subject_v himself_o unto_o suffer_v and_o unto_o death_n for_o christ_n assume_v our_o nature_n without_o sin_n be_v in_o respect_n of_o the_o innocency_n of_o his_o humanity_n and_o also_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o personal_a union_n exempt_v both_o from_o the_o law_n of_o suffering_n and_o of_o death_n but_o christ_n become_v our_o surety_n and_o be_v to_o bear_v the_o whole_a punishment_n that_o be_v due_a to_o we_o by_o reason_n of_o sin_n and_o it_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o the_o curse_n 1._o that_o we_o shall_v be_v liable_a to_o suffer_v and_o death_n and_o 2._o that_o we_o shall_v actual_o undergo_v suffer_v and_o death_n therefore_o christ_n do_v voluntary_o undergo_v both_o these_o 1._o he_o do_v subject_v himself_o to_o a_o passable_a and_o mortal_a state_n and_o 2._o he_o do_v actual_o undergo_v suffer_v and_o death_n for_o we_o 1._o christ_n do_v subject_v himself_o to_o a_o passable_a estate_n he_o that_o be_v above_o all_o suffering_n make_v true_a christ_n have_v suffer_v all_o these_o thing_n and_o if_o christ_n have_v suffer_v all_o these_o thing_n than_o all_o of_o we_o do_v stand_v in_o need_n of_o they_o and_o if_o we_o need_v certain_o the_o cup_n of_o divine_a wrath_n as_o i_o may_v show_v you_o more_o hereafter_o this_o than_o be_v that_o which_o our_o saviour_n fear_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n fear_v say_v a_o learned_a be_v to_o bear_v the_o guilt_n not_o of_o the_o sin_n of_o some_o of_o the_o elect_a only_o but_o the_o guilt_n of_o all_o the_o sin_n of_o all_o the_o elect_n what_o a_o torrent_n then_o or_o sea_n rather_o of_o wrath_n must_v our_o saviour_n need_v see_v come_v on_o his_o most_o holy_a soul_n when_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n which_o be_v due_a for_o the_o sin_n of_o all_o the_o elect_n be_v like_a to_o come_v upon_o he_o at_o once_o well_o therefore_o may_v he_o be_v afraid_a if_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o satan_n to_o aggravate_v and_o blow_v up_o the_o guilt_n of_o a_o little_a sin_n as_o we_o will_v account_v it_o in_o the_o eye_n of_o a_o man_n conscience_n so_o as_o it_o shall_v seem_v the_o great_a sin_n in_o all_o the_o world_n as_o certain_o he_o can_v and_o those_o that_o have_v to_o do_v with_o trouble_a conscience_n know_v how_o often_o he_o do_v it_o and_o such_o a_o sin_n be_v ready_a to_o make_v a_o soul_n to_o despair_v unless_o divine_a grace_n do_v step_n in_o and_o help_v it_o into_o what_o a_o consternation_n than_o may_v we_o well_o suppose_v the_o humane_a soul_n of_o our_o saviour_n to_o be_v cast_v when_o the_o sin_n of_o all_o the_o elect_n the_o most_o great_a horrid_a and_o heinous_a sin_n as_o well_o as_o the_o least_o be_v bind_v upon_o he_o by_o the_o omnipotent_a hand_n of_o god_n his_o father_n and_o he_o know_v he_o be_v to_o answer_v for_o they_o all_o well_o may_v our_o saviour_n fear_n in_o this_o case_n neither_o be_v it_o to_o be_v wonder_v at_o that_o our_o saviour_n shall_v be_v thus_o strike_v with_o fear_n and_o astonishment_n if_o we_o consider_v that_o christ_n do_v not_o only_o take_v our_o nature_n but_o he_o take_v the_o infirmity_n of_o our_o nature_n namely_o such_o as_o be_v inculpable_a and_o without_o sin_n and_o he_o also_o assume_v our_o natural_a affection_n as_o grief_n sorrow_n and_o the_o like_a it_o be_v natural_a to_o the_o creature_n to_o fear_v and_o tremble_v at_o the_o sight_n and_o presence_n of_o a_o angry_a god_n thus_o we_o read_v how_o the_o rock_n cleave_v in_o sunder_o and_o the_o mountain_n have_v tremble_v when_o god_n have_v show_v forth_o the_o terribleness_n of_o his_o majesty_n and_o it_o be_v natural_a to_o man_n when_o any_o terrible_a object_n present_v itself_o and_o some_o evil_a approach_n although_o it_o be_v not_o as_o yet_o inflict_v especial_o nature_n in_o he_o and_o have_v the_o verity_n and_o truth_n of_o humane_a passion_n in_o he_o yet_o without_o sin_n have_v the_o most_o terrible_a object_n that_o ever_o be_v set_v before_o he_o and_o that_o which_o will_v have_v be_v too_o great_a for_o he_o to_o bear_v have_v he_o be_v but_o mere_a man_n and_o that_o be_v the_o wrath_n of_o the_o great_a god_n due_a to_o the_o sin_n of_o for_o we_o now_o that_o i_o may_v unfold_v a_o little_a more_o particular_o and_o distinct_o how_o it_o be_v that_o christ_n suffer_v the_o pain_n and_o torment_n of_o hell_n for_o we_o i_o must_v do_v it_o in_o some_o particular_a proposition_n and_o i_o will_v speak_v of_o this_o a_o little_a for_o these_o two_o end_n 1._o that_o we_o may_v more_o full_o understand_v what_o it_o be_v that_o
