deserve_v a_o examination_n and_o they_o will_v most_o if_o not_o all_o of_o they_o occur_v unto_o we_o in_o our_o progress_n that_o which_o alone_o we_o have_v occasion_n to_o inquire_v into_o with_o respect_n unto_o what_o we_o have_v discourse_v concern_v the_o lord_n christ_n as_o surety_n of_o the_o covenant_n and_o which_o be_v the_o foundation_n of_o all_o that_o be_v assert_v in_o they_o be_v that_o christ_n by_o his_o death_n procure_v the_o new_a covenant_n for_o we_o which_o as_o one_o say_v be_v all_o that_o we_o have_v thereby_o which_o if_o it_o shall_v prove_v otherwise_o we_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o it_o or_o by_o what_o other_o kind_n of_o causality_n unless_o this_o be_v state_v we_o be_v altogether_o uncertain_a what_o relation_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n unto_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n be_v intend_v and_o to_o say_v that_o thereunto_o we_o owe_v the_o new_a covenant_n do_v not_o mend_v the_o matter_n but_o rather_o render_v the_o term_n more_o ambiguous_a neither_o be_v it_o declare_v whether_o the_o constitution_n of_o the_o covenant_n or_o the_o communication_n of_o the_o benefit_n of_o it_o be_v intend_v it_o be_v yet_o no_o less_o general_n that_o god_n be_v so_o well_o please_v with_o what_o christ_n do_v as_o that_o hereon_o he_o make_v and_o enter_v into_o a_o new_a covenant_n with_o mankind_n this_o they_o may_v grant_v who_o yet_o deny_v the_o whole_a satisfaction_n and_o merit_n of_o christ._n if_o they_o mean_v that_o the_o lord_n christ_n by_o his_o obedience_n and_o suffer_v do_v meritorious_o procure_v the_o make_n and_o establish_v of_o the_o new_a covenant_n which_o be_v all_o that_o he_o so_o procure_v and_o the_o entire_a effect_n of_o his_o death_n what_o they_o say_v may_v be_v understand_v but_o the_o whole_a nature_n of_o the_o mediation_n of_o christ_n be_v overthrow_v thereby_o 2._o this_o opinion_n be_v liable_a unto_o a_o great_a prejudice_n in_o that_o whereas_o it_o be_v in_o such_o a_o fundamental_a article_n of_o our_o religion_n and_o about_o that_o wherein_o the_o eternal_a welfare_n of_o the_o church_n be_v so_o near_o concern_v there_o be_v no_o mention_n make_v of_o it_o in_o the_o scripture_n for_o be_v it_o not_o strange_a that_o if_o this_o be_v as_o some_o speak_v the_o sole_a effect_n of_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n whereas_o sundry_a other_o thing_n be_v frequent_o in_o the_o scripture_n ascribe_v unto_o it_o as_o the_o effect_n and_o fruit_n thereof_o that_o this_o which_o be_v only_o so_o shall_v be_v no_o where_o mention_v neither_o in_o express_a word_n nor_o such_o as_o will_v allow_v of_o this_o sense_n by_o any_o just_a or_o lawful_a consequence_n our_o redemption_n pardon_v of_o sin_n the_o renovation_n of_o our_o nature_n our_o sanctification_n justification_n peace_n with_o god_n eternal_a life_n be_v all_o joint_o and_o several_o assign_v thereunto_o in_o place_n almost_o without_o number_n but_o it_o be_v no_o where_o say_v in_o the_o scripture_n that_o christ_n by_o his_o death_n merit_v procure_v obtain_v the_o new_a covenant_n or_o that_o god_n shall_v enter_v into_o a_o new_a covenant_n with_o mankind_n yea_o as_o we_o shall_v see_v that_o which_o be_v contrary_a unto_o it_o and_o inconsistent_a with_o it_o be_v frequent_o assert_v 3._o to_o clear_v the_o truth_n herein_o we_o must_v consider_v the_o several_a notion_n and_o cause_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n with_o the_o true_a and_o real_a respect_n of_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n thereunto_o and_o it_o be_v various_o represent_v unto_o we_o 1._o in_o the_o designation_n and_o preparation_n of_o its_o term_n and_o benefit_n in_o the_o counsel_n of_o god_n and_o this_o although_o it_o have_v the_o nature_n of_o a_o eternal_a decree_n yet_o be_v it_o not_o the_o same_o with_o the_o decree_n of_o election_n as_o some_o suppose_n for_o that_o proper_o respect_v the_o subject_n or_o person_n for_o who_o grace_n and_o glory_n be_v prepare_v this_o be_v the_o preparation_n of_o that_o grace_n and_o glory_n as_o to_o the_o way_n and_o manner_n of_o their_o communication_n some_o learned_a man_n do_v judge_v that_o this_o counsel_n and_o purpose_n of_o the_o will_n of_o god_n to_o give_v grace_n and_o glory_n in_o and_o by_o jesus_n christ_n unto_o the_o elect_a in_o the_o way_n and_o by_o the_o mean_n by_o he_o prepare_v be_v formal_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n or_o at_o least_o that_o the_o substance_n of_o the_o covenant_n be_v comprise_v therein_o but_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o more_o be_v require_v to_o complete_a the_o whole_a nature_n of_o a_o covenant_n nor_o be_v this_o purpose_n or_o counsel_n of_o god_n call_v the_o covenant_n in_o the_o scripture_n but_o be_v only_o propose_v as_o the_o spring_n and_o fountain_n of_o it_o eph._n 1._o â—â—_o 4_o 5_o 6_o 7_o 8_o 9_o 10_o 11._o unto_o the_o full_a exemplification_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n there_o be_v require_v the_o declaration_n of_o this_o counsel_n of_o god_n will_n accompany_v with_o the_o mean_n and_o power_n of_o its_o accomplishment_n and_o the_o prescription_n of_o the_o way_n whereby_o we_o be_v so_o to_o be_v interest_v in_o it_o and_o make_v partaker_n of_o the_o benefit_n of_o it_o but_o in_o the_o enquiry_n after_o the_o procure_a cause_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n it_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n that_o ought_v to_o come_v under_o consideration_n for_o nothing_o can_v be_v the_o procure_a cause_n of_o the_o covenant_n which_o be_v not_o so_o of_o this_o spring_n and_o fountain_n of_o it_o of_o this_o idea_n of_o it_o in_o the_o mind_n of_o god_n of_o the_o preparation_n of_o its_o term_n and_o benefit_n but_o this_o be_v no_o where_o in_o the_o scripture_n affirm_v to_o be_v the_o effect_n of_o the_o death_n or_o mediation_n of_o christ_n and_o to_o ascribe_v it_o thereunto_o be_v to_o overthrow_v the_o whole_a freedom_n of_o eternal_a grace_n and_o love_n neither_o can_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v absolute_o eternal_a as_o be_v this_o decree_n and_o counsel_n of_o god_n be_v the_o effect_n of_o or_o procure_v by_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v external_a and_o temporal_a 2._o it_o may_v be_v consider_v with_o respect_n unto_o the_o foederal_a transaction_n between_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n concern_v the_o accomplishment_n of_o this_o counsel_n of_o his_o will._n what_o these_o be_v wherein_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n but_o this_o be_v that_o wherein_o it_o have_v its_o design_a establishment_n as_o unto_o all_o the_o way_n mean_n and_o end_n of_o its_o accomplishment_n and_o all_o thing_n so_o dispose_v as_o that_o it_o may_v be_v effectual_a unto_o the_o eternal_a glory_n of_o the_o wisdom_n grace_n righteousness_n and_o power_n of_o
god_n wherefore_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n can_v not_o be_v procure_v by_o any_o mean_n or_o cause_n but_o that_o which_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o this_o covenant_n of_o the_o mediator_n or_o of_o god_n the_o father_n with_o the_o son_n as_o undertake_v the_o work_n of_o mediation_n and_o as_o this_o be_v no_o where_o ascribe_v unto_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o scripture_n so_o to_o communication_n of_o grace_n and_o glory_n unto_o sinner_n in_o and_o by_o the_o mediation_n of_o christ_n according_a to_o the_o way_n and_o on_o the_o term_n prepare_v and_o dispose_v in_o his_o sovereign_a wisdom_n and_o pleasure_n be_v formal_o the_o new_a covenant_n though_o something_o yet_o be_v to_o be_v add_v to_o complete_a its_o application_n unto_o we_o now_o the_o substance_n of_o the_o first_o promise_n wherein_o the_o whole_a covenant_n of_o grace_n be_v virtual_o comprise_v direct_o respect_v and_o express_v the_o give_v of_o he_o for_o the_o recovery_n of_o mankind_n from_o
