say_v the_o prophet_n david_n psal_n 119.49_o wherever_o we_o meet_v with_o a_o promise_n we_o have_v there_o ground_n of_o hope_n and_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n of_o this_o namely_o because_o christ_n be_v the_o faithful_a witness_n from_o who_o all_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n do_v receive_v their_o establishment_n and_o therefore_o according_o we_o shall_v rest_v and_o rely_v hereupon_o and_o strengthen_v our_o faith_n from_o it_o especial_o in_o case_n of_o difficulty_n and_o obstruction_n which_o we_o do_v at_o any_o time_n meet_v with_o we_o shall_v here_o make_v use_n of_o this_o property_n in_o christ_n which_o be_v above_o all_o impediment_n whatsoever_o his_o faithfulness_n and_o his_o truth_n shall_v be_v our_o shield_n and_o buckler_n as_o the_o psalmist_n make_v it_o psal_n 91.4_o this_o will_v hold_v when_o nothing_o else_o will_v and_o we_o shall_v not_o need_v to_o call_v it_o in_o question_n as_o st._n paul_n speak_v of_o himself_o 2_o tim._n 1.12_o i_o be_o not_o ashamed_a for_o i_o know_v who_o i_o have_v trust_v etc._n etc._n that_o be_v to_o say_v such_o a_o person_n as_o will_v make_v god_n whatsoever_o he_o have_v promise_v and_o so_o second_o as_o for_o promise_n so_o for_o threaten_n he_o be_v the_o faithful_a witness_n here_o likewise_o and_o so_o we_o shall_v look_v upon_o he_o there_o be_v many_o who_o be_v perhaps_o now_o and_o then_o willing_a to_o believe_v god_n in_o point_n of_o promise_n because_o they_o be_v comfortable_a thing_n and_o such_o as_o they_o desire_v et_fw-la facile_fw-la credimus_fw-la quod_fw-la volumus_fw-la we_o believe_v that_o easy_o which_o we_o will_v have_v to_o be_v so_o but_o in_o point_n of_o threaten_v here_o they_o withdraw_v they_o think_v that_o god_n will_v not_o be_v so_o severe_a a_o punisher_n and_o revenger_n of_o sin_n as_o he_o have_v threaten_v yes_o but_o he_o will_v be_v this_o also_o as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o christ_n be_v a_o faithful_a witness_n in_o both_o and_o so_o at_o last_o he_o will_v prove_v thus_o joshua_n speak_v to_o the_o israelite_n in_o josh_n 23.14_o 15._o you_o know_v say_v he_o in_o all_o your_o heart_n and_o in_o all_o your_o soul_n that_o not_o one_o thing_n have_v fail_v of_o all_o the_o good_a thing_n which_o the_o lord_n your_o god_n speak_v concern_v you_o all_o be_v come_v to_o pass_v unto_o you_o not_o one_o thing_n have_v fail_v therefore_o it_o shall_v come_v to_o pass_v that_o as_o all_o good_a thing_n be_v come_v unto_o you_o which_o the_o lord_n your_o god_n have_v promise_v you_o so_o shall_v the_o lord_n bring_v upon_o person_n because_o he_o be_v a_o faithful_a witness_n we_o judge_v of_o man_n common_o in_o the_o world_n according_a to_o their_o interest_n and_o relation_n and_o the_o person_n that_o they_o have_v to_o deal_v withal_o take_v man_n that_o have_v but_o little_a by_o they_o as_o to_o present_a enjoyment_n and_o possession_n yet_o if_o they_o have_v the_o bond_n and_o engagement_n of_o such_o as_o be_v able_a and_o faithful_a we_o think_v they_o rich_a upon_o that_o account_n why_o this_o now_o be_v the_o case_n and_o condition_n of_o true_a christian_n whatever_o they_o have_v at_o present_a here_o below_o they_o have_v much_o in_o reversion_n and_o expectation_n and_o that_o because_o they_o have_v a_o interest_n in_o christ_n who_o will_v be_v sure_a not_o to_o fail_v they_o therefore_o by_o the_o way_n it_o shall_v teach_v we_o especial_o to_o look_v to_o this_o for_o our_o particular_n there_o be_v nothing_o excellent_a in_o christ_n which_o we_o be_v any_o thing_n better_o for_o any_o further_a than_o we_o be_v member_n of_o he_o and_o such_o person_n as_o belong_v unto_o he_o and_o so_o as_o to_o his_o faithfulness_n among_o the_o rest_n it_o be_v that_o which_o will_v do_v we_o no_o good_a without_o this_o but_o rather_o the_o contrary_n take_v man_n that_o be_v as_o yet_o out_o of_o christ_n in_o a_o carnal_a and_o unregenerate_a condition_n and_o christ_n will_v be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v a_o faithful_a witness_n for_o they_o as_o that_o he_o will_v rather_o be_v a_o swift_a witness_n against_o they_o as_o he_o sometime_o threaten_v to_o be_v in_o mal._n 3.5_o but_o those_o that_o will_v have_v benefit_n by_o his_o faithfulness_n they_o must_v have_v first_o interest_n in_o his_o person_n three_o see_v christ_n be_v a_o faithful_a witness_n it_o shall_v teach_v we_o also_o conformity_n to_o christ_n in_o this_o particular_a that_o we_o may_v herein_o be_v like_a unto_o he_o whether_o minister_n or_o other_o christian_n for_o minister_n especial_o forasmuch_o as_o we_o be_v witness_n by_o our_o place_n we_o shall_v be_v faithful_a in_o the_o discharge_n of_o they_o as_o our_o lord_n and_o master_n be_v before_o we_o it_o be_v record_v in_o commendation_n of_o moses_n that_o he_o be_v faithful_a in_o all_o his_o house_n as_o a_o servant_n heb_fw-mi 3.5_o and_o so_o shall_v we_o be_v likewise_o it_o be_v the_o charge_n which_o the_o the_o end_n of_o it_o and_o in_o every_o thing_n about_o it_o and_o so_o for_o other_o christian_n likewise_o in_o their_o place_n and_o according_a to_o their_o condition_n to_o be_v faithful_a witness_n likewise_o they_o shall_v be_v ready_a upon_o all_o occasion_n to_o justify_v the_o truth_n of_o religion_n and_o to_o bear_v witness_n unto_o they_o especial_o by_o a_o life_n and_o conversation_n suitable_a to_o they_o and_o savour_v of_o they_o this_o be_v to_o conform_v to_o christ_n himself_o in_o this_o property_n which_o be_v here_o fasten_v upon_o he_o and_o so_o i_o have_v do_v with_o the_o first_o general_n part_n of_o the_o text_n which_o be_v the_o description_n of_o christ_n take_v from_o his_o prophetical_a office_n in_o those_o word_n who_o be_v the_o faithful_a witness_n the_o second_o be_v take_v from_o his_o priestly_a in_o these_o and_o the_o first-begotten_a of_o the_o dead_a the_o principal_a action_n of_o christ_n priesthood_n consist_v in_o two_o particular_n the_o one_o be_v in_o die_v for_o we_o and_o the_o other_o in_o rise_v again_o from_o the_o dead_a and_o make_v intercession_n for_o we_o and_o both_o of_o they_o be_v couch_v in_o this_o passage_n which_o we_o have_v here_o before_o we_o there_o be_v three_o distinct_a point_n which_o be_v here_o observable_a of_o we_o though_o the_o last_o most_o to_o be_v insist_v on_o as_o most_o agreeable_a to_o the_o scope_n of_o the_o place_n first_o that_o christ_n be_v once_o dead_a second_o that_o he_o rise_v again_o from_o the_o dead_a three_o that_o he_o be_v the_o that_o thou_o will_v keep_v i_o jabez_n when_o he_o will_v now_o be_v free_v and_o preserve_v from_o approach_a danger_n and_o evil_n which_o hang_v over_o his_o head_n he_o go_v to_o the_o right_a person_n for_o the_o effect_n of_o it_o and_o that_o be_v god_n himself_o as_o all_o kind_n of_o evil_n of_o punishment_n be_v order_v and_o dispose_v of_o by_o god_n no_o evil_a at_o all_o in_o the_o city_n that_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o do_v say_v the_o prophet_n so_o all_o evil_a of_o the_o same_o nature_n likewise_o be_v to_o be_v remove_v and_o prevent_v by_o god_n or_o else_o it_o can_v be_v do_v unto_o thou_o at_o all_o as_o it_o be_v he_o that_o must_v enlarge_v our_o coast_n and_o he_o who_o hand_n must_v be_v with_o we_o so_o it_o be_v he_o also_o that_o must_v keep_v we_o from_o evil_a and_o preserve_v we_o if_o ever_o we_o be_v keep_v all_o other_o mean_n beside_o without_o he_o be_v in_o vain_a and_o to_o no_o purpose_n at_o all_o this_o show_v we_o what_o to_o think_v of_o such_o person_n as_o have_v other_o shelter_n to_o defend_v themselves_o by_o which_o as_o the_o prophet_n esay_n speak_v of_o they_o have_v make_v a_o covenant_n with_o death_n and_o with_o hell_n be_v at_o a_o agreement_n that_o say_v when_o the_o overflow_a scourge_n shall_v pass_v through_o it_o shall_v not_o come_v unto_o they_o for_o they_o have_v make_v lie_v their_o refuge_n and_o under_o falsehood_n they_o have_v hide_v themselves_o such_o as_o these_o shall_v not_o prosper_v in_o that_o way_n wherein_o they_o flatter_v themselves_o their_o covenant_n shall_v be_v disannulled_n and_o their_o agreement_n shall_v not_o stand_v etc._n etc._n there_o can_v be_v no_o hope_n or_o confidence_n for_o they_o but_o only_o in_o god_n alone_o who_o have_v these_o thing_n in_o his_o own_o dispose_n this_o do_v not_o exclude_v the_o use_n of_o mean_n on_o our_o behalf_n which_o in_o their_o place_n be_v to_o be_v use_v by_o we_o we_o may_v not_o thrust_v ourselves_o upon_o evil_a or_o careless_o fall_v into_o it_o and_o think_v it_o enough_o for_o we_o to_o desire_n god_n to_o keep_v we_o from_o it_o this_o be_v to_o tempt_v his_o providence_n rather_o than_o any_o thing_n else_o no_o but_o with_o endeavour_n on_o our_o part_n to_o betake_v ourselves_o humble_o to_o god_n and_o to_o rest_n and_o rely_v upon_o he_o for_o it_o as_o jabez_n here_o do_v i_o may_v here_o also_o take_v notice_n of_o the_o word_n which_o in_o the_o hebrew_n text_n be_v very_o emphatical_a gnazthea_n hand_n of_o strength_n and_o activity_n or_o help_v thereunto_o but_o i_o pass_v over_o that_o and_o so_o much_o of_o the_o request_n that_o thou_o will_v keep_v i_o from_o evil_n the_o second_o be_v the_o amplification_n of_o it_o in_o these_o word_n that_o it_o may_v not_o grieve_v i_o here_o be_v in_o his_o name_n jabez_n which_o as_o i_o have_v show_v signify_v forrowful_a but_o he_o will_v not_o willing_o have_v grief_n in_o his_o hand_n his_o mother_n bear_v he_o in_o sorrow_n in_o the_o verse_n before_o the_o text_n but_o he_o desire_v not_o to_o live_v in_o sorrow_n from_o evil_n that_o it_o may_v not_o grieve_v i_o mark_v here_o how_o he_o expess_v himself_o in_o these_o present_a word_n before_o we_o he_o do_v not_o desire_v absolute_o and_o whole_o to_o be_v keep_v from_o evil_a that_o almost_o as_o the_o world_n common_o go_v may_v seem_v to_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o petition_n but_o he_o desire_v to_o be_v keep_v from_o the_o trouble_n and_o vexation_n of_o it_o it_o be_v not_o from_o evil_a that_o it_o may_v not_o touch_v i_o but_o from_o evil_a that_o it_o may_v not_o grieve_v i_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o condition_n but_o only_o to_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o affection_n this_o be_v that_o which_o we_o may_v according_o desire_v of_o the_o lord_n in_o such_o case_n as_o these_o be_v that_o if_o he_o shall_v bring_v we_o at_o any_o time_n into_o sorrowful_a and_o sad_a condition_n yet_o at_o least_o that_o he_o will_v keep_v we_o from_o sorrowful_a and_o sad_a heart_n this_o be_v that_o which_o seem_v strange_a to_o nature_n but_o grace_n do_v very_o easy_o apprehend_v it_o god_n can_v suffer_v we_o to_o fall_v into_o evil_n and_o yet_o keep_v we_o from_o the_o grief_n of_o the_o evil_n god_n can_v give_v a_o man_n a_o comfortable_a spirit_n in_o a_o sad_a and_o sorrowful_a estate_n and_o oftentimes_o do_v and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o jabez_n rather_o than_o fail_v will_v obtain_v in_o this_o place_n so_o far_o forth_o as_o convenient_o may_v be_v that_o he_o may_v be_v keep_v from_o evil_a but_o if_o not_o from_o evil_a whole_o yet_o from_o evil_a at_o least_o in_o the_o sad_a effect_n and_o consequent_n of_o of_o it_o from_o evil_n that_o it_o may_v not_o grieve_v he_o thus_o for_o the_o better_a open_n and_o unfolding_n of_o it_o to_o we_o may_v be_v take_v with_o these_o follow_a explication_n first_o he_o desire_v to_o be_v keep_v from_o grief_n that_o be_v from_o the_o extremity_n of_o the_o affliction_n so_o as_o to_o sink_v or_o to_o overwhelm_v his_o spirit_n jabez_n can_v not_o imagine_v to_o have_v evil_a and_o not_o to_o have_v grief_n with_o it_o but_o hope_v not_o to_o have_v it_o in_o the_o excess_n and_o violence_n of_o it_o and_o this_o he_o desire_v that_o though_o god_n in_o his_o providence_n shall_v afflict_v he_o yet_o he_o will_v not_o afflict_v he_o beyond_o his_o strength_n or_o lay_v upon_o he_o more_o than_o he_o can_v well_o and_o patient_o endure_v this_o be_v that_o which_o we_o be_v subject_a unto_o if_o god_n do_v not_o prevent_v we_o from_o it_o to_o be_v cast_v down_o upon_o every_o occasion_n and_o to_o be_v discourage_v and_o put_v out_o of_o heart_n almost_o upon_o the_o small_a affliction_n and_o therefore_o be_v there_o need_v of_o prayer_n to_o god_n to_o support_v we_o and_o uphold_v we_o to_o this_o purpose_n and_o to_o keep_v we_o within_o bound_n this_o be_v one_o thing_n which_o jabez_n here_o intend_v second_o when_o he_o desire_v to_o be_v keep_v from_o grief_n that_o be_v from_o the_o sinfulness_n of_o grief_n and_o that_o inordinancy_n and_o distemper_n of_o mind_n which_o we_o be_v common_o subject_a unto_o through_o our_o corruption_n in_o such_o condition_n lord_n keep_v i_o from_o evil_n that_o it_o may_v not_o grieve_v i_o that_o be_v that_o i_o may_v not_o be_v fretful_a in_o it_o that_o i_o may_v not_o be_v sinful_a under_o it_o that_o i_o may_v not_o be_v offensive_a by_o it_o that_o it_o may_v not_o grieve_v i_o nor_o i_o may_v not_o grieve_v thou_o nor_o thy_o holy_a spirit_n occasional_o from_o it_o this_o be_v the_o main_a and_o principal_a desire_n of_o every_o good_a christian_n in_o such_o case_n as_o these_o and_o where_o god_n be_v please_v at_o any_o time_n to_o do_v this_o for_o we_o it_o be_v that_o which_o may_v very_o well_o satisfy_v we_o and_o quiet_v we_o and_o give_v we_o contentment_n whatsoever_o he_o do_v else_o beside_o a_o man_n spirit_n it_o will_v help_v his_o infirmity_n as_o solomon_n speak_v and_o if_o our_o mind_n be_v once_o well_o in_o we_o all_o thing_n else_o shall_v be_v well_o with_o we_o what_o be_v it_o that_o we_o will_v to_o care_n for_o more_o and_o thus_o now_o we_o have_v also_o the_o three_o particular_a whereof_o this_o prayer_n of_o jabez_n be_v make_v up_o to_o wit_n for_o a_o blessing_n in_o reference_n to_o his_o protection_n and_o personal_a preservation_n that_o thou_o will_v keep_v i_o in_o evil_n and_o so_o likewise_o we_o have_v do_v with_o the_o first_o general_n part_n of_o he_o request_v which_o word_n may_v be_v look_v upon_o by_o we_o two_o manner_n of_o way_n either_o first_o of_o all_o in_o their_o common_a and_o general_a notion_n as_o they_o do_v include_v in_o they_o god_n manner_n of_o deal_n in_o his_o answer_n of_o prayer_n at_o large_a or_o second_o in_o their_o restrain_a particular_a notion_n as_o they_o do_v point_n out_o to_o we_o god_n answer_n of_o prayer_n in_o these_o particular_n which_o be_v here_o mention_v before_o we_o and_o which_o jabez_n here_o beg_v at_o god_n hand_n first_o to_o take_v they_o and_o to_o look_v upon_o they_o a_o little_a in_o the_o general_n god_n grant_v he_o that_o which_o he_o request_v what_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o that_o
and_o disease_n and_o plague_n and_o corporal_a death_n those_o that_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n unworthy_o they_o be_v say_v to_o eat_v and_o drink_v judgement_n to_o themselves_o that_o be_v in_o part_n temporal_a judgement_n we_o shall_v find_v if_o we_o look_v into_o scripture_n many_o sad_a proof_n and_o instance_n of_o this_o unto_o we_o wherein_o as_o people_n have_v be_v any_o thing_n more_o formal_a and_o hypocritical_a in_o god_n service_n he_o have_v exercise_v they_o and_o follow_v they_o with_o many_o grievous_a temporal_a calamity_n which_o for_o this_o cause_n he_o have_v inflict_v upon_o they_o three_o and_o last_o of_o all_o eternal_a the_o vengeance_n of_o eternal_a fire_n and_o everlasting_a destruction_n damnation_n as_o some_o render_v that_o place_n 1_o cor._n agreement_n it_o be_v say_v that_o their_o covenant_n with_o death_n shall_v be_v disannul_v and_o their_o agreement_n with_o hell_n shall_v not_o stand_v for_o the_o bed_n be_v short_a than_o that_o a_o man_n can_v stretch_v himself_o upon_o it_o and_o the_o cover_n narrow_a than_o that_o he_o can_v wrap_v himself_o in_o it_o that_o be_v all_o their_o refuge_n and_o vain_a hope_n shall_v prove_v
