come_v from_o the_o king_n to_o thou_o and_o tell_v thou_o that_o if_o thou_o will_v go_v to_o he_o and_o humble_v thyself_o it_o shall_v be_v pardon_v and_o be_v not_o our_o case_n the_o same_o we_o be_v guilty_a of_o eternal_a death_n and_o have_v forfeit_v life_n and_o all_o when_o therefore_o god_n himself_o shall_v say_v if_o thou_o will_v humble_v thyself_o thy_o sin_n shall_v be_v forgive_v what_o comfort_n be_v it_o such_o a_o word_n as_o this_o shall_v not_o be_v lose_v a_o man_n that_o know_v the_o bitterness_n of_o sin_n will_v wait_v and_o wait_v again_o to_o gain_v such_o a_o word_n as_o this_o from_o the_o lord_n mouth_n and_o will_v keep_v it_o as_o his_o life_n it_o be_v not_o a_o light_a thing_n to_o get_v such_o a_o word_n as_o this_o from_o god_n none_o but_o a_o favourite_n can_v get_v it_o nay_o none_o but_o his_o son_n and_o he_o not_o but_o by_o his_o death_n if_o christ_n have_v not_o provide_v this_o charter_n for_o we_o every_o man_n shall_v have_v die_v in_o his_o sin_n now_o this_o we_o can_v and_o do_v say_v from_o god_n through_o christ_n that_o though_o your_o sin_n be_v great_a and_o you_o have_v fall_v into_o they_o many_o a_o time_n and_o commit_v they_o with_o the_o worst_a of_o circumstance_n yet_o if_o thou_o humble_a thyself_o thou_o shall_v be_v forgive_v so_o as_o thou_o may_v say_v i_o may_v challenge_v god_n of_o his_o promise_n and_o put_v this_o bond_n in_o suit_n and_o he_o can_v deny_v it_o this_o be_v a_o great_a matter_n if_o a_o man_n shall_v but_o serious_o consider_v what_o it_o be_v to_o have_v this_o great_a god_n the_o governor_n of_o the_o world_n to_o be_v a_o enemy_n one_o will_v think_v they_o shall_v think_v this_o gospel_n good_a news_n but_o you_o will_v say_v i_o do_v yet_o neither_o know_v distinct_o what_o it_o be_v to_o humble_v myself_o neither_o can_v i_o humble_v myself_o there_o be_v not_o a_o hard_a thing_n than_o it_o be_v therefore_o i_o will_v show_v it_o you_o once_o again_o that_o you_o may_v know_v it_o for_o why_o shall_v we_o

heavy_a lade_v many_o other_o expression_n there_o be_v but_o i_o will_v digest_v all_o into_o two_o head_n to_o humble_a a_o man_n self_n be_v but_o to_o bring_v his_o heart_n and_o mind_n unto_o these_o two_o act_n be_v out_o of_o a_o sense_n of_o a_o man_n unworthiness_n to_o say_v sin_n thus_o unto_o the_o lord_n oh_o lord_n i_o haâ—e_v do_v exceed_o wicked_o and_o be_o worthy_a to_o be_v my_o sin_n will_v break_v my_o back_n i_o be_o not_o able_a to_o stand_v under_o they_o and_o i_o be_o utter_o undo_v and_o when_o i_o look_v upon_o all_o the_o prop_n of_o my_o life_n my_o health_n charge_v they_o that_o be_v rich_a that_o they_o be_v not_o high_o mind_v nor_o trust_v in_o uncertain_a 17_o riches_n they_o be_v both_o join_v together_o for_o so_o far_o as_o a_o man_n do_v trust_v in_o they_o he_o be_v high_a mind_v and_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n do_v trust_v in_o they_o so_o long_o as_o it_o apprehend_v substance_n in_o they_o and_o that_o they_o be_v not_o vanity_n so_o far_o the_o heart_n bear_v itself_o upon_o they_o and_o so_o be_v careless_a of_o the_o lord_n and_o why_o else_o do_v affliction_n humble_a man_n as_o manasses_n but_o because_o a_o man_n then_o see_v the_o emptiness_n of_o all_o thing_n it_o bring_v he_o to_o say_v with_o the_o prodigal_n i_o die_v for_o hunger_n and_o these_o can_v feed_v i_o and_o so_o to_o hold_v fast_o to_o the_o lord_n which_o a_o man_n must_v needs_o do_v when_o he_o have_v but_o one_o thing_n to_o hold_v to_o now_o when_o thou_o be_v wrought_v on_o so_o as_o to_o express_v this_o unfeigned_o this_o be_v it_o to_o humble_v thyself_o we_o shall_v hence_o learn_v to_o strengthen_v our_o faith_n if_o we_o have_v do_v this_o if_o thou_o have_v thus_o humble_v thy_o faith_n self_n confess_v thy_o sin_n take_v up_o a_o full_a resolution_n to_o forsake_v they_o thou_o shall_v have_v mercy_n according_a to_o that_o promise_n prov._n 28._o 13._o he_o that_o confess_v and_o 13_o for_o sake_v shall_v have_v mercy_n but_o here_o we_o find_v those_o who_o have_v humble_v themselves_o come_v in_o with_o two_o objection_n that_o hinder_v their_o comfort_n 1._o that_o they_o can_v mourn_v for_o their_o sin_n 2_o that_o they_o fall_v into_o the_o same_o sin_n again_o and_o again_o and_o that_o therefore_o they_o have_v not_o humble_v themselves_o now_o as_o we_o will_v not_o have_v the_o false_a deceive_v with_o false_a evidence_n so_o nor_o the_o true_a discomfort_a and_o therefore_o we_o will_v answer_v these_o objection_n to_o the_o first_o if_o thou_o be_v so_o far_o convince_v in_o thy_o judgement_n of_o thy_o sin_n and_o misery_n and_o unability_n to_o help_v effectual_a thyself_o as_o it_o have_v turn_v the_o bent_n and_o rudder_n of_o thy_o will_n so_o as_o thou_o say_v i_o will_v go_v and_o humble_v myself_o to_o my_o father_n change_v my_o course_n confess_v and_o forsake_v my_o sin_n though_o thy_o affection_n seem_v to_o thou_o not_o stir_v yet_o this_o be_v enough_o to_o translate_v thou_o into_o the_o estate_n of_o grace_n for_o i_o ask_v to_o what_o end_n be_v mourn_a and_o weep_v require_v but_o to_o awaken_v a_o man_n to_o come_v home_o to_o god_n in_o this_o manner_n mention_v when_o therefore_o thou_o find_v these_o effect_n thou_o may_v be_v sure_a thou_o have_v the_o end_n of_o these_o and_o that_o be_v enough_o to_o save_v thou_o suppose_v a_o man_n carry_v about_o he_o a_o deadly_a disease_n so_o as_o upon_o the_o discovery_n and_o knowledge_n of_o it_o he_o be_v content_a to_o part_v with_o all_o he_o have_v to_o the_o physician_n and_o be_v wary_a of_o meddle_v simile_n with_o any_o meat_n that_o will_v hurt_v he_o and_o increase_v it_o if_o he_o know_v this_o that_o it_o be_v deadly_a though_o he_o have_v no_o sense_n of_o pain_n it_o be_v all_o one_o and_o there_o be_v some_o disease_n you_o know_v wherein_o a_o man_n feel_v not_o so_o much_o pain_n that_o yet_o be_v mortal_a it_o may_v make_v he_o as_o careful_a to_o use_v the_o mean_n and_o so_o be_v it_o here_o if_o the_o conviction_n of_o the_o sinfulness_n and_o deadliness_n of_o sin_n work_v those_o disposition_n mention_v in_o thou_o than_o thou_o have_v the_o end_n which_o mourning_n tend_v to_o and_o that_o be_v all_o one_o though_o thy_o affection_n be_v not_o so_o stir_v consider_v to_o the_o promise_n be_v make_v to_o one_o come_v in_o and_o take_v christ_n and_o believe_v in_o he_o they_o be_v not_o make_v to_o the_o commotion_n of_o the_o affection_n and_o here_o in_o the_o word_n the_o promise_n be_v make_v to_o humble_v thyself_o out_o of_o a_o solidity_n of_o judgement_n it_o be_v no_o matter_n by_o what_o mean_v you_o be_v bring_v to_o take_v hold_n on_o christ_n so_o you_o come_v to_o he_o it_o be_v all_o one_o whether_o i_o come_v to_o my_o journey_n end_n by_o land_n or_o by_o water_n on_o horse_n back_o or_o on_o foot_n so_o i_o be_v come_v thither_o if_o thou_o find_v thou_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o a_o humble_a man_n shall_v do_v then_o though_o thy_o affection_n seem_v not_o to_o be_v move_v yet_o in_o very_a deed_n they_o be_v move_v and_o change_v as_o if_o thou_o be_v fearful_a to_o return_v to_o thy_o sin_n be_v resolve_v to_o please_v god_n in_o all_o thing_n to_o thy_o power_n for_o what_o be_v affection_n but_o divers_a position_n and_o situation_n of_o the_o will_n and_o what_o the_o foot_n it_o walk_v upon_o they_o be_v but_o the_o divers_a motion_n and_o inclination_n whereby_o the_o will_n shoot_v itself_o into_o the_o object_n of_o it_o now_o look_v which_o way_n thy_o will_n be_v resolve_v and_o set_v that_o way_n be_v thy_o affection_n set_v also_o if_o thou_o see_v one_o ro_o rise_v up_o soon_o and_o go_v to_o bed_v late_o to_o avoid_v poverty_n and_o to_o get_v riches_n a_o wise_a man_n will_v assure_v himself_o that_o his_o simile_n aim_n be_v such_o and_o his_o heart_n set_v upon_o riches_n his_o action_n show_v that_o his_o affection_n do_v move_v strong_o that_o way_n and_o never_o turn_v true_o who_o yet_o suppose_v that_o they_o be_v convert_v therefore_o we_o will_v endeavour_v to_o open_a to_o you_o this_o true_a turn_n now_o it_o may_v be_v find_v out_o four_o way_n first_o by_o the_o cause_n of_o it_o or_o motive_n upon_o which_o second_o by_o the_o term_n from_o which_o and_o to_o which_o we_o turn_v three_o by_o the_o manner_n afffliction_n four_o by_o the_o effect_n first_o for_o the_o cause_n of_o this_o solid_a true_a turn_n and_o the_o motive_n which_o work_v upon_o a_o man_n heart_n to_o turn_v he_o you_o must_v know_v that_o there_o be_v many_o thing_n may_v cause_v a_o man_n to_o leave_v his_o evil_a way_n for_o a_o while_n as_o it_o may_v be_v some_o present_a affliction_n for_o the_o avoid_n of_o which_o a_o man_n may_v seem_v to_o turn_v unto_o god_n therefore_o god_n still_o complain_v of_o the_o jew_n that_o they_o turn_v but_o fained_o unto_o he_o and_o not_o with_o the_o whole_a heart_n because_o when_o he_o slay_v they_o than_o they_o seek_v to_o he_o and_o then_o they_o will_v turn_v from_o their_o evil_a way_n but_o when_o they_o be_v deliver_v they_o turn_v to_o their_o old_a bias_n again_o so_o pharaoh_n when_o as_o he_o be_v plague_v with_o any_o new_a judgement_n than_o he_o will_v let_v the_o israelite_n go_v but_o as_o soon_o as_o that_o be_v off_o he_o harden_v his_o heart_n and_o will_v not_o let_v they_o go_v as_o also_o a_o second_o cause_n to_o move_v man_n to_o turn_n benefit_n may_v be_v some_o present_a commodity_n this_o do_v appear_v in_o many_o of_o those_o that_o apply_v themselves_o to_o christ_n some_o do_v it_o for_o the_o loaf_n and_o some_o for_o their_o convenient_a live_n some_o for_o the_o hope_n of_o a_o earthly_a kingdom_n which_o they_o think_v he_o will_v have_v bring_v but_o these_o all_o leave_v he_o afterward_o there_o be_v many_o such_o false_a motive_n but_o the_o only_a true_a motive_n be_v take_v from_o the_o apprehension_n of_o eternal_a be_v life_n and_o eternal_a death_n the_o conversion_n be_v not_o right_a till_o then_o and_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o all_o other_o motive_n may_v be_v over_o balance_v but_o the_o motive_n of_o life_n and_o death_n can_v be_v over_o top_v by_o any_o thing_n if_o preferment_n be_v offer_v or_o what_o ever_o the_o world_n can_v offer_v but_o these_o exceed_v all_o that_o satan_n or_o the_o world_n or_o the_o flesh_n can_v suggest_v therefore_o a_o man_n be_v then_o turn_v when_o the_o lord_n shall_v enlarge_v his_o thought_n to_o see_v the_o greatness_n and_o the_o vastness_n of_o these_o two_o for_o then_o all_o those_o other_o thing_n appear_v but_o as_o candle_n in_o the_o sunshine_n so_o that_o if_o satan_n come_v with_o earthly_a honour_n and_o pleasure_n in_o his_o hand_n the_o answer_n will_v be_v easy_a but_o what_o be_v these_o to_o eternal_a death_n and_o everlasting_a life_n and_o these_o be_v not_o think_v of_o nor_o consider_v by_o carnal_a man_n though_o they_o death_n bed_n have_v a_o actual_a apprehension_n of_o hell_n as_o present_v be_v strange_o affect_v now_o at_o conversion_n the_o apprehension_n of_o these_o seize_v upon_o a_o man_n by_o a_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o compass_n he_o about_o so_o as_o he_o can_v shake_v it_o off_o till_o he_o turn_v to_o god_n the_o wise_a man_n see_v the_o plague_n before_o hand_n even_o as_o present_v and_o therefore_o stay_v not_o till_o it_o come_v but_o turn_v in_o the_o time_n of_o youth_n health_n and_o strength_n second_o it_o must_v be_v a_o deep_a fix_a and_o settle_a apprehension_n deep_o it_o and_o this_o be_v that_o true_a apprehension_n which_o move_v to_o repentance_n but_o some_o will_v say_v can_v a_o man_n be_v wrought_v upon_o object_n by_o the_o mere_a apprehension_n of_o eternal_a life_n and_o death_n to_o turn_v from_o his_o evil_a way_n without_o a_o apprehension_n of_o sin_n and_o grace_n when_o a_o man_n have_v a_o true_a apprehension_n of_o eternal_a life_n and_o death_n he_o come_v to_o know_v what_o sin_n and_o grace_n grace_n be_v and_o never_o before_o till_o a_o man_n know_v eternal_a death_n he_o look_v on_o sin_n as_o a_o trifle_n as_o a_o thing_n of_o
