water_n rather_o strengthen_v than_o extinguish_v a_o full_a kindle_a fire_n so_o by_o the_o increase_n of_o his_o torment_n which_o be_v small_a in_o respect_n of_o his_o excessive_a love_n his_o content_a and_o desire_v of_o suffer_v far_o great_a be_v more_o and_o more_o enkindle_v and_o augment_v consider_v further_o that_o he_o endure_v all_o this_o by_o no_o external_a violence_n nor_o for_o any_o self-interest_n but_o as_o he_o tell_v thou_o for_o thy_o love_n and_o that_o thou_o may_v imitate_v he_o and_o exercise_v thyself_o in_o the_o virtue_n of_o patience_n and_o then_o honour_n be_v to_o he_o devout_a for_o to_o suffer_v for_o god_n be_v the_o best_a prayer_n and_o make_v thou_o true_o devout_a the_o most_o acceptable_a prayer_n and_o therefore_o to_o endure_v this_o dryness_n with_o perfect_a patience_n and_o humble_a resignation_n make_v thou_o true_o devout_a because_o true_a devotion_n consist_v in_o no_o other_o thing_n than_o to_o have_v a_o ready_a will_n to_o follow_v christ_n thy_o lord_n with_o thy_o cross_n on_o thy_o shoulder_n whither_o and_o which_o way_n he_o please_v have_v and_o desire_v god_n only_o for_o god_n and_o sometime_o leave_v god_n for_o god_n 9_o if_o therefore_o spiritual_a person_n especial_o religious_a man_n and_o woman_n will_v seerious_o examine_v and_o measure_v their_o progress_n in_o the_o way_n of_o perfection_n and_o piety_n by_o this_o rule_n and_o not_o by_o the_o feel_n of_o sensible_a devotion_n which_o many_o do_v chief_o devotion_n and_o not_o sensible_a devotion_n regard_v they_o sure_o will_v make_v better_a use_n of_o sensible_a comfort_n in_o their_o exercise_n of_o devotion_n which_o their_o love_a lord_n afford_v to_o make_v they_o more_o zealous_a in_o submit_v to_o his_o sacred_a will_n which_o dispose_v all_o thing_n in_o order_n to_o our_o salvation_n and_o benefit_n deceive_v wherein_o many_o be_v deceive_v 10._o and_o in_o this_o also_o many_o be_v much_o deceive_v that_o when_o they_o be_v trouble_v with_o impure_a and_o perverse_a thought_n they_o present_o become_v fearful_a and_o fainthearted_a and_o as_o if_o god_n have_v utter_o forsake_v they_o think_v it_o impossible_a that_o his_o holy_a spirit_n shall_v inhabit_v a_o heart_n so_o trouble_v and_o torment_v and_o they_o so_o intricate_a themselves_o in_o these_o fancy_n till_o by_o degree_n they_o fall_v into_o a_o grievous_a dislike_n of_o themselves_o and_o last_o into_o a_o certain_a dangerous_a despair_n which_o they_o no_o soon_o apprehend_v in_o themselves_o but_o they_o present_o run_v to_o their_o wont_a way_n to_o recover_v their_o quiet_n but_o hereby_o they_o show_v themselves_o little_a grateful_a to_o god_n who_o therefore_o permit_v they_o to_o be_v thus_o trouble_v
