measure_n of_o his_o give_v they_o who_o as_o also_o in_o the_o person_n to_o who_o then_o be_v it_o to_o the_o jew_n only_o who_o be_v the_o peculiar_a people_n of_o god_n now_o the_o partition_n wall_n be_v break_v down_o and_o the_o covenant_n be_v to_o the_o gentile_n as_o well_o as_o to_o the_o jew_n so_o also_o for_o the_o measure_n he_o speak_v to_o they_o by_o vision_n and_o dream_n thereof_o whereby_o it_o have_v a_o deadly_a wound_n give_v it_o which_o it_o shall_v never_o recover_v so_o from_o his_o burial_n his_o spirit_n convey_v power_n to_o hold_v under_o our_o corruption_n that_o they_o get_v head_n no_o more_o so_o from_o his_o resurrection_n power_n to_o rise_v to_o newness_n of_o life_n so_o that_o now_o be_v graft_v into_o such_o a_o live_a stock_n by_o true_a olive_n therefore_o the_o fruit_n be_v and_o must_v needs_o be_v according_o so_o that_o though_o he_o sin_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o as_o before_o before_o he_o be_v guide_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o satan_n and_o the_o world_n now_o by_o the_o holy_a spirit_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o must_v needs_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o holiness_n 20._o as_o it_o be_v holy_a must_v needs_o be_v renew_v throughout_o though_o not_o whole_o and_o perfect_o 1._o here_o be_v a_o great_a comfort_n to_o god_n child_n 1_o and_o infinite_a cause_n have_v they_o to_o praise_n god_n that_o whereas_o before_o they_o bring_v forth_o nothing_o but_o fruit_n unto_o death_n now_o they_o be_v enable_v to_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n to_o god_n and_o to_o life_n before_o servant_n to_o the_o flesh_n reap_v corruption_n now_o to_o the_o spirit_n 8._o the_o fruit_n thereof_o be_v everlasting_a life_n there_o must_v needs_o be_v joy_n in_o do_v such_o work_n 2._o this_o condemn_v they_o that_o say_v they_o believe_v 2._o and_o they_o be_v convert_v and_o hope_v to_o be_v save_v by_o jesus_n christ_n and_o yet_o continue_v in_o their_o course_n no_o every_o one_o that_o be_v in_o christ_n be_v a_o new_a creature_n it_o be_v a_o disgrace_n to_o christ_n to_o say_v such_o fruit_n come_v from_o he_o 7._o the_o growth_n of_o one_o that_o be_v true_o regenerate_v degree_n he_o be_v not_o at_o his_o pitch_n the_o first_o day_n it_o be_v not_o with_o he_o as_o with_o adam_n who_o be_v perfect_a at_o once_o in_o his_o creation_n but_o he_o come_v to_o it_o by_o degree_n as_o every_o thing_n that_o move_v from_o one_o place_n to_o another_o do_v it_o in_o some_o space_n of_o time_n so_o in_o this_o motion_n from_o sin_n to_o righteousness_n and_o life_n eternal_a it_o be_v do_v in_o time_n and_o by_o degree_n and_o that_o not_o in_o all_o alike_o but_o as_o some_o man_n be_v of_o great_a stature_n some_o of_o small_a and_o sometime_o the_o young_a be_v tall_a than_o the_o elder_a so_o it_o may_v be_v in_o this_o but_o all_o do_v and_o must_v grow_v and_o that_o by_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n and_o sacrament_n as_o corn_n by_o the_o early_a and_o latter_a rain_n spring_v up_o by_o degree_n and_o a_o babe_n first_o small_a and_o weak_a yet_o by_o good_a tendance_n and_o god_n blessing_n grow_v big_a and_o strong_a in_o every_o part_n then_o can_v go_v alone_o speak_v digest_v strong_a meat_n begin_v to_o bear_v burden_n and_o do_v the_o work_n of_o a_o man_n so_o must_v a_o christian_a grow_v from_o a_o babe_n to_o be_v strong_a to_o digest_v strong_a meat_n high_a point_n of_o doctrine_n to_o be_v able_a to_o go_v alone_o in_o good_a duty_n by_o the_o finger_n as_o in_o prayer_n read_v another_o prayer_n but_o now_o can_v go_v alone_o in_o it_o so_o in_o other_o duty_n then_o strong_a to_o bear_v affliction_n temptation_n mock_v discouragement_n and_o also_o to_o put_v up_o wrong_n and_o go_v through_o duty_n and_o service_n 1._o this_o may_v rebuke_v they_o that_o be_v so_o far_o from_o grow_v 1_o as_o they_o go_v back_o and_o be_v worse_o than_o sometime_o they_o be_v these_o may_v suspect_v that_o either_o they_o never_o begin_v in_o truth_n but_o be_v sudden_o move_v have_v but_o some_o common_a gift_n and_o be_v but_o build_v upon_o the_o sand_n or_o else_o that_o they_o have_v ill_o behave_v themselves_o begin_v in_o the_o spirit_n to_o end_v in_o the_o flesh_n be_v you_o too_o well_o what_o fault_n find_v you_o that_o you_o be_v weary_a and_o go_v back_o to_o your_o old_a master_n if_o you_o belong_v to_o god_n and_o do_v not_o awaken_v yourselves_o the_o lord_n will_v whip_v you_o home_o will_v send_v you_o as_o runagate_n to_o the_o house_n of_o correction_n 2._o for_o those_o that_o stand_v at_o a_o stay_n 2._o and_o no_o difference_n can_v be_v discern_v between_o that_o they_o be_v many_o year_n ago_o and_o now_o they_o also_o be_v in_o a_o woeful_a case_n do_v not_o a_o man_n look_v his_o child_n shall_v grow_v in_o learn_v every_o year_n and_o will_v it_o not_o grieve_v if_o he_o shall_v stand_v always_o at_o one_o stay_n we_o love_v to_o see_v our_o child_n grow_v and_o will_v grieve_v to_o see_v they_o dwarf_n and_o no_o big_a now_o than_o they_o be_v many_o year_n ago_o and_o have_v we_o no_o care_n of_o our_o own_o or_o their_o growth_n in_o grace_n as_o man_n every_o year_n aim_n more_o and_o more_o to_o grow_v in_o wealth_n and_o as_o in_o a_o race_n man_n press_v hard_a forward_o towards_o the_o mark_n so_o shall_v we_o to_o grow_v in_o grace_n but_o why_o do_v man_n grow_v no_o fast_o goodness_n a._n 1._o some_o be_v proud_a and_o conceit_a they_o have_v more_o than_o they_o have_v and_o so_o strive_v not_o 2._o some_o compare_n themselves_o with_o they_o that_o be_v under_o they_o and_o not_o with_o they_o that_o exceed_v they_o in_o grace_n and_o so_o think_v they_o have_v enough_o whereas_o in_o worldly_a thing_n they_o reach_v always_o at_o those_o above_o that_o they_o may_v not_o only_o equal_v they_o but_o overtop_n they_o 3._o some_o be_v so_o cloy_v with_o the_o love_n of_o the_o world_n and_o multitude_n of_o business_n that_o they_o can_v spare_v no_o time_n for_o this_o this_o be_v the_o bane_n of_o religion_n and_o hinder_v from_o many_o a_o duty_n public_a and_o private_a choke_v the_o word_n in_o the_o obedience_n thereto_o and_o practice_n thereof_o and_o cause_v many_o a_o duty_n to_o be_v but_o poor_o perform_v 4._o ill_o company_n be_v as_o great_a a_o hindrance_n to_o spiritual_a growth_n as_o the_o east_n and_o north_n wind_n to_o tender_a flower_n and_o plant_n 5._o neglect_v and_o fail_v of_o the_o mean_n of_o grow_v as_o if_o any_o man_n want_v his_o meal_n he_o will_v soon_o faint_v and_o if_o any_o tradesman_n want_v his_o market_n he_o will_v soon_o be_v bankrupt_a 6._o some_o use_v they_o negligent_o as_o hear_v pray_v etc._n etc._n and_o thrive_v according_o he_o that_o keep_v the_o market_n but_o once_o in_o a_o month_n will_v not_o gain_v much_o so_o they_o that_o hear_v the_o word_n but_o now_o and_o then_o at_o their_o leisure_n will_v not_o get_v forward_o very_o fast_o especial_o they_o that_o keep_v not_o the_o main_a market_n nay_o the_o mart_n of_o their_o soul_n the_o lord_n day_n when_o they_o shall_v make_v off_o their_o corruption_n and_o provide_v themselves_o with_o all_o spiritual_a commodity_n 7._o such_o as_o hear_v often_o but_o without_o preparation_n before_o or_o regard_v after_o do_v man_n thrive_v by_o meat_n take_v into_o a_o full_a or_o foul_a stomach_n or_o by_o swallow_v their_o meat_n whole_a no_o more_o shall_v we_o spiritual_o thrive_v though_o we_o swallow_v down_o whole_a sermon_n unless_o we_o chew_v they_o by_o meditation_n and_o practice_n they_o will_v never_o nourish_v we_o and_o whereas_o many_o humble_a soul_n complain_v that_o they_o do_v not_o grow_v grow_v though_o earnest_o desirous_a thereof_o and_o diligent_a in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n they_o must_v examine_v themselves_o whether_o indeed_o they_o have_v use_v the_o mean_n and_o that_o diligent_o with_o preparation_n and_o prayer_n if_o not_o they_o must_v reform_v the_o same_o if_z yea_o they_o may_v be_v of_o good_a comfort_n for_o assure_o they_o can_v but_o grow_v somewhat_o though_o not_o as_o they_o will_v they_o must_v yet_o be_v constant_a and_o that_o god_n who_o have_v give_v they_o a_o heart_n to_o use_v the_o mean_n of_o grow_v 12._o will_v also_o enable_v they_o to_o grow_v we_o must_v be_v grow_v as_o long_o as_o we_o live_v here_o if_o we_o have_v methuselahs_n year_n to_o live_v and_o still_o take_v pain_n yet_o still_o there_o will_v be_v work_n so_o hard_o be_v it_o to_o get_v victory_n over_o and_o to_o subdue_v this_o army_n of_o our_o lust_n and_o to_o draw_v dry_a this_o ocean_n of_o our_o corrupt_a affection_n bless_a be_v he_o that_o make_v this_o his_o chief_a or_o only_o work_v to_o mortify_v more_o and_o more_o his_o sinful_a nature_n apply_v the_o word_n promise_n threat_n mercy_n judgement_n general_a particular_a on_o ourselves_o or_o other_o to_o this_o end_n god_n
have_v give_v we_o many_o mean_n to_o subdue_v they_o therefore_o will_v be_v angry_a if_o we_o keep_v they_o not_o under_o and_o grow_v especial_o against_o our_o strong_a corruption_n they_o offend_v god_n hurt_v we_o glad_a satan_n defile_v the_o temple_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o christ_n death_n be_v of_o long_a continuance_n and_o therefore_o must_v be_v put_v away_o and_o as_o we_o must_v labour_v daily_a to_o mortify_v our_o lust_n and_o old_a man_n so_o to_o grow_v in_o all_o grace_n 8._o the_o perfection_n of_o a_o christian_a life_n there_o be_v none_o here_o in_o this_o life_n we_o know_v but_o in_o part_n there_o be_v still_o remnant_n of_o sin_n in_o we_o we_o be_v indeed_o perfect_o justify_v not_o but_o in_o part_n sanctify_v sin_n and_o grace_n be_v mingle_v in_o every_o part_n 9_o not_o sin_n in_o one_o part_n and_o grace_n in_o another_o as_o heat_n and_o cold_a in_o lukewarm_a water_n 27._o light_n and_o darkness_n in_o the_o twilight_n god_n will_v have_v it_o so_o to_o be_v hereof_o 1._o that_o we_o may_v be_v save_v of_o mercy_n and_o by_o christ_n merit_n and_o not_o by_o any_o merit_n of_o our_o own_o for_o if_o we_o be_v perfect_o sanctify_v here_o then_o shall_v christ_n seem_v only_o to_o make_v we_o fit_a to_o merit_v our_o own_o salvation_n 2._o that_o his_o power_n may_v be_v make_v know_v in_o our_o indeed_o troublesome_a and_o hurtful_a as_o the_o canaanite_n to_o the_o israelite_n or_o rebel_n that_o make_v insurrection_n in_o a_o kingdom_n but_o have_v not_o the_o sceptre_n in_o their_o hand_n but_o be_v subdue_v in_o time_n and_o they_o dwell_v in_o we_o as_o unwelcome_a guest_n there_o be_v always_o a_o civil_a war_n in_o a_o child_n of_o god_n two_o man_n in_o one_o man_n the_o old_a and_o the_o new_a two_o law_n the_o law_n of_o our_o member_n and_o the_o law_n of_o our_o mind_n the_o flesh_n and_o spirit_n fight_v each_o against_o other_o 7._o now_o the_o one_o prevail_a than_o the_o other_o 17._o yet_o so_o as_o the_o old_a man_n grow_v weak_a and_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n strong_a it_o have_v a_o deadly_a blow_n at_o first_o and_o still_o languish_v and_o be_v in_o a_o consumption_n simil._n as_o a_o serpent_n that_o be_v deadly_o wound_v in_o his_o head_n yet_o wriggle_v with_o the_o tail_n or_o a_o soldier_n deadly_a wound_v in_o his_o brain_n yet_o thrust_v with_o his_o weapon_n the_o scripture_n speak_v of_o the_o old_a man_n in_o regeneration_n as_o if_o it_o be_v crucify_v and_o whole_o destroy_v because_o it_o be_v so_o wound_v that_o it_o can_v never_o recover_v his_o former_a strength_n 1._o this_o condemn_v all_o anabaptist_n 1_o and_o other_o that_o dream_v of_o a_o purity_n in_o this_o life_n 2._o it_o teach_v we_o to_o bear_v with_o one_o another_o 2._o the_o husband_n though_o godly_a must_v not_o look_v the_o wife_n shall_v be_v without_o fault_n nor_o the_o wife_n the_o husband_n so_o the_o master_n the_o servant_n or_o the_o servant_n the_o master_n there_o be_v none_o without_o imperfection_n we_o never_o read_v of_o any_o but_o note_v with_o some_o weakness_n christ_n alone_o except_v therefore_o think_v it_o not_o strange_a neither_o neglect_v the_o grace_n that_o be_v in_o any_o for_o one_o or_o more_o infirmity_n so_o as_o they_o grow_v to_o no_o height_n 3._o here_o be_v comfort_n to_o those_o that_o doubt_v of_o their_o conversion_n 3_o because_o they_o meet_v with_o temptation_n and_o feel_v sin_n rebel_a in_o they_o and_o their_o corrupt_a nature_n lust_a after_o evil_n it_o be_v not_o so_o much_o a_o sign_n you_o be_v not_o convert_v because_o you_o have_v sin_n for_o that_o be_v common_a to_o all_o as_o that_o you_o be_v because_o you_o feel_v it_o strive_v against_o it_o and_o grieve_v for_o it_o this_o be_v indeed_o a_o sign_n you_o have_v the_o spirit_n in_o you_o the_o godly_a and_o wicked_a sin_n both_o but_o there_o be_v great_a odds_o in_o the_o manner_n the_o wicked_a sin_n willing_o and_o advise_o yea_o delight_n in_o it_o be_v loath_a to_o be_v hinder_v from_o it_o when_o they_o have_v do_v be_v not_o humble_v but_o go_v on_o therein_o whereas_o the_o regenerate_v sin_n not_o with_o full_a consent_n but_o hale_v thereto_o by_o force_n of_o temptation_n and_o strength_n of_o corruption_n be_v thereafter_o humble_v ashamed_a grieve_v if_o it_o be_v thus_o with_o thou_o be_v of_o good_a comfort_n be_v still_o constant_a in_o resist_v use_v mean_n to_o subdue_v the_o old_a man_n and_o cherish_v the_o new_a so_o shall_v you_o every_o day_n get_v the_o victory_n more_o and_o more_o and_o when_o you_o be_v overtake_v thus_o it_o shall_v not_o be_v lay_v to_o your_o charge_n but_o pardon_v in_o the_o death_n and_o obedience_n of_o jesus_n christ_n neither_o shall_v your_o corruption_n recover_v itself_o again_o to_o rule_v over_o you_o as_o before_o but_o shall_v still_o languish_v and_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o the_o scripture_n speak_v as_o if_o our_o regeneration_n be_v perfect_a our_o old_a man_n destroy_v and_o at_o last_o by_o death_n we_o shall_v get_v a_o final_a and_o perfect_a victory_n and_o never_o feel_v sin_n more_o for_o with_o lay_v down_o our_o body_n we_o lay_v down_o our_o sin_n and_o not_o before_o not_o of_o corruptible_a seed_n etc._n etc._n here_o be_v set_v down_o 1._o the_o efficient_a cause_n of_o our_o regeneration_n both_o negative_o where_o be_v show_v what_o it_o be_v not_o and_o affirmative_o what_o be_v not_o 2._o the_o instrument_n thereof_o the_o word_n of_o god_n 3._o a_o description_n of_o god_n that_o he_o live_v and_o abide_v for_o ever_o not_o of_o corruptible_a seed_n of_o mortal_a seed_n we_o be_v bear_v obseru._n not_o bear_v again_o nature_n by_o it_o we_o be_v make_v creature_n not_o new_a creature_n we_o be_v not_o bear_v holy_a but_o by_o be_v bear_v again_o we_o be_v make_v holy_a the_o godly_a saint_n of_o god_n can_v convey_v grace_n into_o their_o child_n 6._o but_o not_o as_o it_o ought_v the_o will_n desire_v nothing_o that_o good_a be_v or_o at_o least_o as_o it_o ought_v for_o it_o be_v defile_v and_o so_o the_o whole_a man_n again_o mortal_a seed_n beget_v that_o though_o in_o they_o there_o be_v many_o want_n yet_o god_n in_o christ_n jesus_n will_v accept_v the_o will_n for_o the_o deed_n he_o will_v accept_v of_o their_o heart_n and_o of_o the_o with_o the_o lord_n in_o care_n who_o be_v so_o careful_a of_o they_o heavy_n
