of_o their_o soul_n as_o they_o do_v receive_v by_o look_v upon_o the_o brazen_a serpent_n the_o very_a behold_v of_o christ_n have_v a_o power_n to_o sanctify_v the_o heart_n and_o therefore_o if_o you_o will_v have_v holiness_n you_o must_v often_o look_v upon_o christ_n set_v christ_n in_o your_o eye_n be_v not_o only_o pore_v upon_o your_o corruption_n and_o look_v downward_o into_o the_o blackness_n that_o there_o be_v in_o your_o spirit_n many_o christian_n be_v labour_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o their_o corruption_n a_o long_a time_n why_o because_o they_o spend_v their_o time_n and_o strength_n mere_o in_o pore_v upon_o their_o corruption_n and_o look_v down_o to_o their_o corruption_n but_o oh_o christian_n thou_o must_v look_v up_o set_v thy_o eye_n upon_o christ_n the_o great_a ordinance_n and_o behold_v he_o as_o the_o great_a ordinance_n set_v up_o by_o god_n the_o father_n for_o the_o conveyance_n of_o grace_n to_o the_o soul_n of_o believer_n and_o for_o the_o heal_n of_o all_o their_o soul_n and_o wound_n and_o then_o there_o will_v come_v heal_a virtue_n from_o he_o we_o read_v of_o the_o poor_a woman_n that_o have_v the_o bloody_a issue_n that_o spend_v all_o upon_o the_o physician_n she_o do_v but_o come_v to_o christ_n and_o touch_v the_o hem_n of_o his_o garment_n and_o then_o she_o be_v heal_v sure_o christ_n have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o virtue_n in_o he_o that_o the_o very_a touch_n do_v heal_v she_o and_o therefore_o he_o say_v who_o have_v touch_v i_o virtue_n go_v from_o he_o at_o the_o very_a touch_n of_o the_o hem_n of_o his_o garment_n christ_n be_v the_o great_a ordinance_n and_o he_o be_v full_a of_o virtue_n and_o excellency_n the_o look_v upon_o he_o and_o touch_v of_o he_o bring_v virtue_n to_o the_o soul_n to_o heal_v the_o soul_n of_o its_o corruption_n three_o more_o particular_o christ_n bring_v sanctification_n unto_o the_o heart_n because_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n be_v appoint_v by_o god_n to_o that_o it_o shall_v have_v efficacy_n upon_o the_o heart_n to_o mortify_v corruption_n in_o the_o heart_n a_o man_n may_v resolve_v against_o his_o corruption_n he_o may_v vow_v and_o covenant_n against_o a_o sin_n he_o may_v strive_v and_o struggle_v against_o a_o sin_n he_o may_v pray_v against_o a_o sin_n he_o may_v fast_o to_o overcome_v his_o sin_n he_o may_v use_v all_o mean_n that_o he_o think_v he_o can_v possible_o use_v to_o overcome_v his_o sin_n and_o yet_o still_o his_o sin_n not_o dead_a in_o he_o perhaps_o the_o mean_n that_o he_o may_v use_v to_o restrain_v sin_n may_v keep_v down_o his_o sin_n but_o it_o will_v never_o mortify_v his_o sin_n the_o application_n of_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n that_o be_v appoint_v by_o god_n for_o christ_n be_v appoint_v himself_o as_o the_o great_a ordinance_n but_o now_o more_o particular_o i_o say_v that_o the_o way_n that_o be_v appoint_v by_o god_n for_o the_o mortify_n of_o corruption_n it_o be_v the_o application_n of_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n to_o the_o soul_n the_o virtue_n that_o come_v from_o christ_n as_o a_o die_a christ_n from_o christ_n as_o a_o crucify_a christ_n from_o christ_n as_o a_o dead_a christ_n to_o mortify_v corruption_n in_o the_o heart_n that_o be_v clear_a from_o that_o place_n in_o rom._n 6._o the_o begin_n what_o shall_v we_o say_v then_o shall_v we_o continue_v in_o sin_n that_o grace_n may_v abound_v god_n forbid_v how_o shall_v we_o that_o be_v dead_a to_o sin_n live_v any_o long_a therein_o dead_a a_o part_n of_o his_o come_n know_v you_o not_o that_o so_o many_o of_o we_o in_o the_o soul_n with_o the_o connexion_n of_o they_o and_o join_v one_o to_o another_o as_o the_o member_n be_v join_v in_o the_o body_n they_o come_v to_o be_v destroy_v that_o be_v though_o not_o whole_o cast_v out_o and_o radicate_v yet_o the_o roll_a power_n of_o they_o be_v take_v away_o as_o soon_o as_o ever_o the_o soul_n be_v come_v to_o christ_n the_o body_n of_o sin_n have_v a_o deadly_a stroke_n give_v to_o it_o there_o be_v many_o of_o you_o strive_v against_o this_o particular_a corruption_n sometime_o one_o and_o sometime_o another_o for_o those_o that_o be_v god_n child_n their_o heart_n be_v more_o incline_v unto_o some_o sin_n than_o other_o and_o at_o sometime_o to_o some_o particular_a sin_n more_o than_o other_o it_o may_v be_v one_o labour_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o passion_n and_o another_o of_o unbelief_n and_o another_o of_o pride_n and_o another_o of_o wantonness_n and_o divers_a particular_a corruption_n they_o be_v labour_v under_o it_o may_v be_v at_o some_o time_n you_o find_v one_o corruption_n stir_v and_o you_o strive_v against_o that_o and_o another_o time_n another_o corruption_n stir_v and_o you_o spend_v your_o strength_n against_o that_o but_o now_o here_o be_v the_o way_n to_o strike_v at_o the_o whole_a body_n of_o corruption_n at_o once_o if_o one_o shall_v go_v to_o cut_v down_o a_o tree_n and_o stand_v chap_a at_o one_o sprig_n and_o one_o branch_n and_o another_o branch_n the_o tree_n may_v stand_v long_o enough_o for_o all_o that_o but_o now_o if_o he_o will_v get_v the_o tree_n down_o he_o go_v to_o the_o root_n and_o a_o few_o blow_n get_v down_o all_o there_o so_o this_o be_v the_o wisdom_n of_o a_o christian_a that_o when_o he_o come_v to_o labour_v against_o any_o corruption_n he_o do_v not_o spend_v his_o time_n so_o much_o against_o this_o or_o that_o particular_a corruption_n but_o strike_v at_o the_o body_n of_o corruption_n and_o how_o get_v he_o strength_n against_o that_o by_o apply_v the_o blood_n of_o christ_n the_o death_n of_o christ_n by_o faith_n against_o that_o and_o by_o this_o mean_v the_o body_n of_o death_n come_v to_o be_v destroy_v and_o here_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o christian_n in_o a_o little_a time_n grow_v so_o much_o and_o get_v so_o much_o power_n against_o their_o corruption_n whereas_o other_o be_v a_o long_a time_n before_o they_o get_v any_o power_n at_o all_o those_o that_o be_v not_o acquaint_v with_o the_o way_n of_o christ_n you_o shall_v have_v one_o that_o have_v be_v a_o notorious_a wretch_n a_o wicked_a person_n a_o swearer_n a_o sabbath-breaker_n if_o it_o please_v god_n to_o bring_v he_o to_o the_o word_n and_o reveal_v christ_n to_o the_o soul_n you_o shall_v have_v a_o mighty_a change_n in_o this_o man_n in_o a_o week_n a_o great_a change_n that_o he_o do_v not_o only_o leave_v off_o now_o drunkenness_n and_o then_o lie_v and_o then_o swear_v and_o then_o sabbath-breaking_a but_o all_o go_v down_o soul_n come_v to_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o it_o hear_v the_o voice_n behind_o he_o as_o it_o be_v say_v come_v to_o i_o and_o the_o soul_n be_v enable_v to_o answer_v to_o the_o call_v and_o to_o come_v to_o christ_n it_o do_v now_o perform_v duty_n as_o much_o as_o it_o do_v before_o and_o make_v conscience_n of_o they_o as_o much_o as_o it_o do_v before_o but_o now_o they_o come_v to_o do_v they_o in_o another_o manner_n than_o they_o do_v before_o and_o they_o come_v to_o be_v easy_a to_o they_o over_o that_o they_o be_v before_o and_o they_o come_v to_o have_v rest_n to_o their_o soul_n notwithstanding_o their_o imperfection_n in_o duty_n when_o you_o go_v to_o prayer_n indeed_o sometime_o when_o your_o heart_n be_v much_o enlarge_v in_o prayer_n and_o your_o thought_n be_v take_v up_o whole_o with_o the_o duty_n that_o you_o be_v perform_v than_o you_o think_v you_o have_v some_o comfort_n but_o when_o you_o have_v any_o wander_a thought_n and_o distraction_n in_o prayer_n than_o you_o rise_v up_o with_o a_o mighty_a trouble_a spirit_n and_o can_v have_v no_o rest_n all_o the_o day_n long_o now_o when_o you_o come_v to_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o mystery_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n though_o there_o be_v many_o imperfection_n in_o your_o duty_n yet_o than_o you_o shall_v find_v rest_n unto_o your_o soul_n notwithstanding_o all_o your_o imperfection_n but_o that_o will_v come_v to_o be_v more_o clear_o open_v when_o we_o come_v to_o that_o an_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v those_o that_o have_v labour_v under_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n and_o find_v it_o toilsome_a and_o exceed_o burdensome_a to_o they_o christ_n call_v they_o to_o come_v to_o he_o that_o they_o may_v have_v rest_n the_o burden_n under_o sin_n second_o those_o that_o labour_n and_o be_v heavy_a lade_v under_o the_o weight_n and_o burden_n of_o their_o sin_n the_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n that_o be_v upon_o they_o for_o their_o sin_n this_o be_v another_o thing_n beside_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n the_o other_o labour_n be_v from_o under_o duty_n but_o this_o labour_n be_v from_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o weight_n and_o burden_n of_o sin_n and_o we_o be_v to_o know_v that_o this_o be_v a_o great_a labour_n and_o burden_n oh_o when_o the_o soul_n come_v to_o be_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n it_o work_v to_o purpose_n it_o labour_v then_o indeed_o the_o thought_n they_o gather_v together_o and_o conscience_n be_v awaken_v make_v a_o great_a disturbance_n and_o cause_v fear_n and_o tremble_n in_o the_o soul_n the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n that_o be_v before_o slugish_a dull_a heavy_a and_o dead_a when_o god_n come_v to_o make_v it_o to_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n than_o it_o be_v quicken_v enliven_v and_o work_v you_o that_o labour_n and_o be_v heavy_a lade_v you_o that_o feel_v the_o weight_n of_o sin_n upon_o your_o soul_n and_o know_v not_o what_o in_o the_o world_n to_o do_v come_v you_o to_o i_o say_v christ_n and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v the_o burden_n of_o corruption_n three_o you_o that_o labour_v under_o the_o power_n of_o any_o corruption_n not_o only_o under_o the_o gild_n of_o your_o sin_n but_o under_o the_o power_n of_o corruption_n that_o feel_v your_o sin_n strong_a in_o you_o and_o you_o will_v fain_o get_v the_o mastery_n of_o they_o you_o that_o carry_v about_o with_o you_o such_o a_o weight_n as_o make_v you_o to_o cry_v out_o with_o st._n paul_n oh_o wretched_a man_n or_o woman_n that_o i_o be_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o this_o body_n of_o death_n you_o that_o will_v fain_o overcome_v those_o strong_a corruption_n that_o be_v in_o you_o and_o it_o be_v the_o great_a burden_n of_o your_o soul_n that_o you_o can_v overcome_v they_o come_v to_o i_o say_v christ_n and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_n from_o they_o also_o first_o you_o that_o labour_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o duty_n and_o find_v they_o toilsome_a second_o you_o that_o labour_n under_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n and_o find_v your_o soul_n perplex_v by_o it_o three_o you_o that_o labour_v under_o the_o power_n of_o any_o corruption_n and_o can_v overcome_v it_o come_v to_o i_o and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v and_o then_o the_o burden_n of_o affliction_n four_o you_o that_o labour_v under_o any_o outward_a trouble_n or_o affliction_n in_o this_o world_n all_o you_o that_o be_v in_o any_o sad_a condition_n that_o have_v any_o burden_n upon_o you_o outward_o if_o you_o come_v to_o christ_n he_o will_v ease_v you_o of_o they_o though_o perhaps_o he_o will_v not_o take_v they_o from_o you_o though_o you_o may_v be_v under_o the_o affliction_n as_o before_o yet_o you_o shall_v have_v rest_n and_o ease_v in_o they_o have_v you_o any_o burden_n of_o poverty_n have_v you_o any_o burden_n in_o your_o child_n have_v you_o any_o burden_n in_o your_o yoke_n fellow_n or_o burden_n by_o reason_n of_o weakness_n in_o body_n if_o you_o will_v have_v rest_n you_o must_v go_v for_o it_o to_o chirst_n many_o when_o they_o be_v under_o any_o outward_a affliction_n they_o go_v no_o further_o than_o the_o creature_n for_o rest_n oh_o if_o i_o have_v but_o good_a friend_n i_o shall_v be_v happy_a or_o if_o i_o have_v but_o a_o estate_n i_o shall_v be_v well_o but_o if_o thy_o poverty_n do_v work_v upon_o thy_o heart_n kind_o it_o will_v drive_v thou_o to_o chest_n and_o make_v thou_o to_o say_v true_a i_o be_o poor_a in_o this_o world_n but_o there_o be_v enough_o in_o christ_n to_o make_v i_o rich_a there_o be_v mercy_n enough_o in_o christ_n to_o make_v my_o life_n comfortable_a to_o make_v i_o who_o be_o for_o the_o present_a in_o a_o miserable_a condition_n happy_a for_o ever_o those_o that_o be_v poor_a outward_o they_o shall_v go_v to_o christ_n if_o their_o poverty_n do_v drive_v they_o to_o christ_n it_o be_v a_o good_a sign_n that_o the_o lord_n do_v sanctify_v their_o poverty_n unto_o they_o now_o because_o all_o these_o burden_n if_o they_o be_v handle_v distinct_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n the_o burden_n of_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n the_o burden_n of_o the_o power_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o burden_n of_o outward_a affliction_n in_o this_o world_n to_o open_v these_o full_o and_o to_o show_v how_o christ_n call_v those_o that_o be_v under_o these_o to_o himself_o will_v take_v up_o much_o time_n therefore_o i_o will_v pitch_v upon_o the_o second_o at_o present_a and_o handle_v that_o more_o thorough_o and_o that_o be_v the_o labour_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n you_o that_o labour_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o gild_n of_o sin_n come_v to_o i_o and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v i_o will_v not_o here_o stand_v to_o open_v unto_o you_o what_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o gild_n of_o sin_n be_v then_o i_o shall_v soon_o slip_v into_o a_o christ_n and_o make_v he_o sweat_v drop_n of_o blood_n and_o it_o be_v that_o that_o have_v be_v a_o great_a weight_n and_o burden_n upon_o many_o thousand_o of_o god_n saint_n it_o be_v that_o that_o the_o damn_a in_o hell_n lie_v under_o now_o and_o must_v do_v so_o eternal_o curse_v blaspheme_v of_o god_n it_o be_v that_o that_o make_v the_o whole_a creation_n to_o groan_v and_o travel_v in_o pain_n however_o many_o people_n think_v slight_o and_o mean_o of_o it_o yet_o when_o the_o lord_n do_v lay_v it_o upon_o any_o soul_n such_o a_o soul_n do_v find_v it_o to_o be_v a_o burden_n indeed_o chap._n iii_o the_o burden_n under_o sin_n lay_v open_a in_o nine_o particular_n 1._o when_o the_o soul_n not_o only_o apprehend_v but_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n in_o they_o but_o they_o have_v art_n to_o make_v their_o tankard_n light_a as_o can_v be_v but_o now_o if_o they_o carry_v their_o water_n in_o tankard_n of_o lead_n though_o the_o water_n be_v no_o be_v useful_a in_o the_o place_n where_o they_o live_v they_o shall_v live_v so_o as_o that_o all_o that_o live_v by_o they_o and_o with_o they_o shall_v bless_v god_n for_o they_o this_o they_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o do_v to_o live_v in_o such_o a_o manner_n as_o all_o that_o come_v near_o they_o shall_v bless_v god_n that_o ever_o they_o come_v near_o or_o have_v converse_v with_o they_o the_o seven_o property_n of_o the_o burden_n of_o corruption_n seven_o this_o burden_n be_v such_o a_o burden_n as_o make_v those_o that_o be_v godly_a to_o be_v burdensome_a to_o themselves_o yea_o even_o to_o be_v weary_a of_o their_o life_n many_o time_n why_o for_o their_o corruption_n in_o they_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o grievous_a than_o death_n will_v be_v to_o they_o we_o use_v to_o express_v a_o thing_n that_o be_v very_o grievous_a to_o we_o and_o say_v it_o be_v death_n to_o we_o those_o that_o be_v godly_a can_v say_v so_o of_o their_o sin_n and_o that_o be_v one_o reason_n that_o paul_n give_v that_o name_n to_o his_o sin_n a_o body_n of_o death_n oh_o wretched_a man_n that_o i_o be_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o this_o body_n of_o death_n why_o because_o the_o remain_a corruption_n that_o then_o be_v in_o his_o heart_n be_v as_o death_n to_o he_o so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o saint_n the_o corruption_n that_o remain_v in_o their_o heart_n it_o be_v death_n to_o they_o and_o they_o can_v appeal_v unto_o god_n and_o speak_v thus_o in_o his_o presence_n the_o bitterness_n of_o death_n will_v not_o be_v so_o much_o to_o i_o a_o thousand_o part_n as_o this_o corruption_n that_o be_v in_o my_o heart_n oh_o this_o corruption_n that_o be_v in_o my_o heart_n that_o overcome_v i_o after_o so_o many_o resolution_n so_o many_o prayer_n so_o many_o sacrament_n so_o many_o engagement_n it_o be_v that_o which_o make_v i_o weary_a of_o my_o life_n as_o rebeccah_n say_v if_o jacob_n shall_v marry_v a_o wife_n of_o the_o daughter_n of_o heth_n it_o will_v make_v her_o weary_a of_o her_o life_n so_o say_v the_o godly_a this_o remain_a corruption_n in_o my_o heart_n make_v i_o weary_a of_o my_o life_n what_o shall_v i_o do_v that_o carry_v such_o a_o body_n of_o death_n about_o i_o so_o as_o i_o do_v there_o be_v many_o man_n and_o woman_n that_o in_o a_o discontent_a mood_n say_v they_o be_v weary_a of_o their_o life_n but_o this_o be_v in_o a_o discontent_a mood_n but_o when_o can_v you_o say_v so_o in_o respect_n of_o your_o heart_n when_o do_v you_o say_v i_o look_v into_o my_o heart_n and_o i_o see_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o sin_n corruption_n worldliness_n pride_n passion_n and_o the_o like_a and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o make_v i_o weary_a of_o my_o life_n the_o truth_n be_v the_o great_a thing_n that_o make_v the_o people_n of_o god_n to_o be_v willing_a to_o die_v be_v this_o because_o they_o know_v when_o they_o die_v they_o shall_v be_v deliver_v from_o this_o burden_n and_o therefore_o when_o death_n come_v they_o entertain_v it_o willing_o because_o they_o know_v they_o shall_v sin_v against_o god_n no_o more_o there_o be_v many_o of_o you_o when_o you_o have_v live_v a_o long_a time_n in_o sickness_n and_o poverty_n and_o be_v in_o great_a strait_n many_o way_n you_o think_v if_o death_n shall_v come_v to_o i_o i_o can_v be_v willing_a to_o die_v because_o than_o i_o shall_v suffer_v no_o such_o thing_n as_o now_o i_o do_v i_o but_o that_o be_v no_o argument_n of_o grace_n but_o this_o be_v a_o argument_n of_o grace_n that_o because_o of_o the_o great_a burden_n of_o corruption_n that_o thou_o carry_v about_o in_o thy_o soul_n therefore_o thou_o will_v be_v willing_a to_o die_v the_o eight_o property_n of_o the_o burden_n of_o corruption_n eight_o sin_n be_v a_o grievous_a burden_n while_o we_o have_v it_o and_o make_v we_o weary_a of_o our_o life_n and_o yet_o it_o be_v such_o a_o burden_n as_o we_o must_v certain_o carry_v about_o with_o we_o such_o a_o body_n as_o we_o know_v that_o god_n aim_v at_o the_o execution_n of_o his_o just_a judgement_n upon_o they_o thereby_o 7._o god_n do_v it_o for_o this_o reason_n that_o the_o saint_n may_v long_o more_o after_o heaven_n therefore_o it_o be_v that_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o order_n of_o his_o providence_n work_v so_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v keep_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o corruption_n in_o this_o world_n that_o they_o may_v long_o to_o be_v in_o heaven_n with_o their_o father_n and_o that_o when_o they_o come_v to_o heaven_n they_o may_v know_v the_o difference_n between_o heaven_n and_o earth_n between_o their_o state_n there_o in_o heaven_n and_o their_o state_n here_o on_o earth_n thus_o though_o corruption_n may_v be_v a_o great_a burden_n to_o we_o while_o we_o live_v here_o in_o this_o world_n yet_o the_o lord_n have_v many_o great_a end_n and_o purpose_n to_o suffer_v thou_o a_o poor_a creature_n to_o be_v under_o remain_v corruption_n and_o therefore_o thou_o can_v not_o draw_v any_o such_o argument_n god_n love_v i_o not_o for_o if_o he_o love_v i_o he_o will_v deliver_v i_o from_o this_o corruption_n i_o have_v be_v pray_v a_o longtime_n to_o be_v deliver_v and_o yet_o i_o be_o not_o deliver_v do_v not_o gather_v any_o such_o argument_n from_o it_o you_o know_v paul_n pray_v once_o and_o again_o and_o all_o the_o answer_n he_o have_v be_v my_o grace_n shall_v be_v sufficient_a for_o thou_o so_o though_o thou_o pray_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o corruption_n again_o and_o again_o yet_o if_o once_o god_n say_v thus_o to_o thy_o soul_n my_o grace_n shall_v be_v sufficient_a for_o thou_o thy_o corruption_n shall_v not_o crush_v thou_o and_o undo_v thou_o but_o i_o will_v sstrengthen_v thou_o this_o will_v be_v sufficient_a now_o from_o all_o this_o that_o have_v be_v say_v you_o may_v by_o way_n of_o consequence_n see_v first_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o difference_n between_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o godly_a and_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o wicked_a the_o wicked_a they_o sin_n and_o the_o godly_a sin_n too_o we_o use_v to_o say_v we_o be_v all_o sinner_n but_o it_o be_v to_o the_o one_o a_o burden_n to_o the_o other_o a_o delight_n second_o you_o may_v see_v from_o hence_o also_o one_o reason_n why_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n go_v on_o sometime_o so_o sad_o in_o their_o way_n thou_o do_v not_o know_v what_o burden_n they_o be_v under_o but_o you_o will_v say_v we_o be_v better_o we_o do_v not_o feel_v it_o no_o they_o have_v not_o so_o much_o sin_n as_o thou_o have_v they_o have_v get_v some_o grace_n thou_o have_v none_o they_o have_v in_o some_o degree_n mortify_v their_o sin_n thou_o have_v not_o yea_o they_o have_v their_o sin_n pardon_v thou_o have_v not_o but_o yet_o though_o they_o have_v some_o assurance_n that_o the_o guilt_n of_o their_o sin_n be_v remove_v yet_o the_o very_a remain_v of_o the_o corruption_n of_o their_o heart_n be_v their_o burden_n object_n you_o will_v say_v why_o shall_v it_o be_v so_o burdensome_a if_o they_o know_v the_o guilt_n of_o their_o sin_n to_o be_v forgive_v answ_n i_o beseech_v you_o observe_v it_o there_o be_v a_o deal_n of_o difference_n between_o a_o carnal_a heart_n and_o a_o godly_a heart_n one_o that_o have_v a_o carnal_a heart_n if_o he_o can_v be_v ease_v from_o the_o burden_n of_o conscience_n he_o be_v no_o more_o trouble_v but_o now_o a_o gracious_a heart_n though_o he_o be_v first_o burden_v with_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n &_o that_o burden_n be_v remove_v yet_o there_o remain_v a_o body_n of_o death_n there_o be_v another_o burden_n still_o upon_o he_o so_o that_o the_o very_o remain_v of_o some_o corruption_n be_v a_o great_a burden_n unto_o he_o than_o all_o thy_o corruption_n that_o be_v in_o the_o full_a strength_n of_o it_o and_o together_o with_o thy_o corruption_n all_o the_o guilt_n that_o be_v upon_o thou_o only_o thou_o be_v dead_a in_o sin_n and_o do_v not_o feel_v it_o if_o a_o whole_a building_n fall_v down_o those_o that_o be_v bury_v in_o the_o grave_n they_o will_v not_o feel_v it_o but_o all_o you_o that_o be_v alive_a if_o it_o shall_v fall_v down_o will_v feel_v it_o so_o the_o wicked_a have_v the_o burden_n of_o their_o corruption_n in_o the_o full_a strength_n of_o it_o in_o the_o guilt_n of_o it_o upon_o they_o and_o they_o feel_v it_o not_o for_o they_o be_v dead_a but_o the_o godly_a though_o they_o have_v the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n remove_v yet_o the_o very_a lest_o sin_n remain_v in_o they_o be_v a_o burden_n though_o they_o have_v mortify_v their_o sin_n and_o do_v it_o every_o day_n yet_o the_o remain_v of_o sin_n be_v a_o great_a burden_n to_o they_o and_o hence_o you_o may_v see_v the_o reason_n of_o the_o watchfulness_n of_o the_o saint_n over_o their_o spirit_n why_o they_o spend_v so_o much_o time_n and_o rise_v so_o early_o to_o hear_v the_o word_n what_o be_v the_o reason_n you_o will_v say_v they_o know_v that_o if_o they_o do_v not_o labour_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o their_o corruption_n to_o a_o void_a sin_n it_o will_v be_v a_o great_a burden_n to_o labour_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n afterward_o now_o you_o do_v not_o watch_v over_o sin_n because_o you_o do_v not_o know_v what_o a_o grievous_a burden_n sin_n be_v when_o they_o labour_n under_o it_o but_o such_o a_o one_o as_o feel_v the_o burden_n of_o sin_n the_o lord_n be_v break_v and_o that_o be_v the_o reason_n of_o the_o watchfulness_n and_o carefulness_n of_o the_o saint_n under_o this_o burden_n now_o the_o main_a thing_n that_o have_v be_v intend_v in_o all_o that_o i_o have_v say_v about_o this_o burden_n be_v this_o that_o i_o may_v point_v out_o those_o who_o christ_n call_v to_o himself_o that_o you_o may_v be_v prepare_v to_o hearken_v to_o the_o invitation_n of_o christ_n to_o come_v to_o he_o for_o rest_n though_o we_o be_v not_o come_v to_o that_o yet_o take_v notice_n that_o there_o be_v rest_n in_o christ_n for_o all_o these_o from_o under_o all_o these_o burden_n and_o so_o much_o for_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o remain_a part_n of_o corruption_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o saint_n chap._n xviii_o of_o the_o burden_n of_o outward_a affliction_n and_o the_o grievousness_n thereof_o lay_v open_a in_o three_o particular_n 1._o in_o themselves_o they_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n 2._o they_o hinder_v much_o in_o do_v service_n to_o god_n 3._o they_o often_o help_v forward_o many_o strong_a temptation_n why_o god_n will_v have_v his_o saint_n to_o be_v under_o this_o burden_n namely_o 1._o because_o he_o will_v have_v his_o servant_n to_o honour_n and_o obey_v he_o mere_o out_o of_o love_n 2._o because_o he_o know_v that_o thus_o their_o corruption_n may_v be_v best_a mortify_v 3._o to_o be_v a_o stumbling-block_n to_o the_o wicked_a the_o next_o burden_n be_v the_o burden_z of_o affliction_n the_o burden_n of_o outward_a affliction_n poverty_n disgrace_n sickness_n or_o any_o kind_n of_o trouble_n in_o this_o world_n you_o shall_v find_v these_o thing_n to_o be_v very_o burdensome_a to_o you_o now_o christ_n call_v such_o as_o labour_n under_o this_o burden_n to_o come_v to_o he_o and_o promise_v to_o give_v they_o rest_n christ_n have_v a_o tender_a affection_n towards_o poor_a creature_n under_o outward_a burden_n towards_o all_o those_o that_o the_o father_n have_v give_v to_o he_o especial_o when_o they_o be_v burden_v with_o outward_a affliction_n and_o the_o gospel_n have_v in_o it_o abundance_n of_o refreshment_n to_o help_v and_o ease_v sinner_n that_o feel_v the_o burden_n of_o affliction_n in_o this_o world_n no_o such_o way_n of_o ease_n and_o rest_v unto_o they_o as_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n as_o we_o shall_v open_v more_o full_o when_o we_o come_v to_o the_o promise_n now_o the_o burden_n of_o affliction_n be_v very_o grievous_a to_o many_o the_o burden_z of_o poverty_n disgrace_n sickness_n or_o the_o like_a those_o who_o god_n let_v prosper_v in_o their_o way_n little_o think_v what_o burden_n be_v upon_o their_o brethren_n how_o many_o in_o these_o day_n be_v there_o of_o our_o brethren_n that_o groan_n under_o these_o burden_n though_o we_o do_v not_o feel_v they_o we_o know_v not_o how_o soon_o we_o may_v be_v bring_v under_o they_o and_o therefore_o it_o will_v be_v very_o seasonable_a to_o show_v the_o rest_n that_o we_o have_v in_o christ_n even_o from_o under_o these_o burden_n i_o have_v spend_v some_o time_n in_o open_v the_o grievousness_n of_o other_o burden_n now_o this_o burden_n of_o
keep_v from_o the_o act_n of_o sin_n so_o much_o as_o to_o find_v that_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n be_v apply_v to_o he_o and_o hence_o you_o never_o read_v of_o any_o such_o thing_n as_o mortification_n in_o any_o heathen_a author_n in_o the_o world_n the_o mortification_n of_o corruption_n be_v a_o riddle_n to_o all_o heathen_a writer_n in_o the_o world_n the_o mortify_n of_o corruption_n and_o the_o mortify_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n this_o be_v a_o peculiar_a expression_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o indeed_o it_o be_v peculiar_a to_o believer_n many_o man_n through_o good_a education_n be_v so_o restrain_v that_o they_o be_v very_o fair_a in_o their_o course_n other_o as_o they_o come_v to_o more_o understanding_n the_o vanity_n of_o their_o youth_n be_v overcome_v there_o be_v not_o that_o profaneness_n commit_v by_o they_o as_o heretofore_o i_o but_o what_o be_v this_o to_o mortification_n of_o the_o body_n of_o death_n that_o be_v in_o their_o heart_n this_o be_v only_o peculiar_a to_o a_o christian_a and_o it_o be_v from_o the_o application_n of_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n the_o application_n of_o a_o christ_n die_v of_o a_o christ_n crucify_a of_o a_o christ_n shed_v his_o blood_n for_o sin_n this_o have_v a_o virtue_n to_o mortify_v sin_n there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o difference_n between_o a_o mortify_a lust_n and_o a_o restrain_a lust_n a_o mortify_a sin_n and_o a_o restrain_a sin_n the_o difference_n lie_v in_o this_o one_o thing_n for_o i_o must_v not_o go_v out_o to_o handle_v the_o point_n but_o only_o this_o one_o thing_n take_v it_o by_o the_o way_n when_o a_o lust_n be_v mortify_v there_o be_v not_o only_o a_o cease_n from_o the_o act_n of_o it_o but_o there_o be_v now_o a_o unsuitableness_n between_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o sin_n whereas_o there_o may_v be_v much_o restraint_n of_o sin_n and_o yet_o still_o there_o may_v remain_v a_o suitableness_n between_o the_o disposition_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o sin_n only_o they_o dare_v not_o commit_v it_o but_o when_o sin_n be_v mortify_v the_o heart_n be_v so_o change_v that_o there_o be_v a_o unsuitableness_n wrought_v between_o the_o heart_n and_o corruption_n now_o and_o this_o mortification_n of_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n be_v by_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n four_o christ_n be_v our_o sanctification_n and_o he_o only_o because_o it_o be_v by_o he_o that_o the_o spiritual_a curse_n that_o be_v upon_o every_o man_n heart_n natural_o be_v take_v away_o it_o be_v christ_n only_o that_o do_v deliver_v the_o soul_n from_o the_o spiritual_a curse_n that_o be_v upon_o every_o man_n heart_n natural_o you_o know_v this_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o man_n by_o nature_n he_o be_v under_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n curse_a be_v the_o man_n that_o abide_v not_o in_o all_o thing_n that_o be_v write_v in_o the_o law_n to_o do_v it_o but_o now_o we_o apprehend_v ordinary_o this_o curse_n to_o be_v either_o in_o outward_a misery_n or_o else_o in_o hell_n fire_n curse_v eternal_o but_o we_o be_v to_o know_v that_o one_o branch_n of_o this_o curse_n be_v that_o that_o be_v upon_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n here_o there_o be_v a_o spiritual_a curse_n that_o be_v upon_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n by_o the_o fall_n of_o adam_n and_o that_o be_v god_n give_v they_o up_o unto_o themselves_o unto_o the_o lust_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n unto_o their_o own_o counsel_n and_o way_n now_o i_o confess_v as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o curse_n of_o outward_a affliction_n in_o this_o world_n it_o be_v in_o some_o degree_n upon_o some_o and_o in_o a_o further_a degree_n upon_o other_o but_o all_o be_v under_o it_o natural_o so_o this_o spiritual_a death_n be_v execute_v in_o some_o degree_n upon_o some_o and_o in_o more_o degree_n upon_o other_o but_o every_o soul_n be_v in_o some_o measure_n in_o some_o degree_n or_o other_o give_v up_o to_o the_o lust_n of_o its_o own_o heart_n there_o be_v a_o final_a degree_n of_o give_v the_o soul_n up_o to_o the_o lust_n of_o its_o own_o heart_n sometime_o but_o there_o be_v in_o every_o one_o a_o measure_n a_o degree_n of_o this_o and_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o prevail_a of_o the_o corruption_n of_o man_n heart_n may_v appear_v in_o some_o measure_n by_o this_o it_o be_v strange_a to_o see_v that_o notwithstanding_o all_o the_o conviction_n of_o conscience_n &_o tell_v man_n of_o the_o dangerousness_n of_o their_o way_n that_o it_o will_v never_o be_v peace_n in_o the_o end_n that_o they_o will_v rue_v it_o at_o the_o last_o and_o their_o conscience_n give_v they_o many_o a_o secret_a nip_n yet_o they_o go_v on_o still_o notwithstanding_o the_o terror_n in_o the_o law_n many_o time_n nay_o notwithstanding_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n have_v be_v strong_a upon_o they_o and_o they_o have_v cry_v out_o against_o their_o sin_n and_o promise_v against_o they_o and_o notwithstanding_o that_o they_o find_v that_o their_o sin_n do_v destroy_v the_o very_a health_n of_o their_o body_n waste_v their_o estate_n take_v away_o their_o good_a name_n and_o thereby_o loose_a all_o their_o friend_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o overcome_v it_o as_o the_o scripture_n speak_v of_o some_o that_o have_v eye_n full_a of_o adultery_n they_o can_v cease_v to_o sin_n now_o sometime_o they_o plead_v this_o as_o a_o excuse_n for_o their_o sin_n and_o say_v they_o will_v fain_o leave_v it_o but_o they_o can_v and_o they_o think_v this_o be_v a_o sufficient_a excuse_n for_o their_o sin_n a_o excuse_n no_o this_o their_o can_v may_v be_v from_o the_o spiritual_a curse_n that_o be_v upon_o their_o soul_n because_o the_o curse_n of_o god_n be_v in_o a_o high_a degree_n upon_o their_o heart_n give_v they_o up_o in_o just_a judgement_n unto_o the_o lust_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n and_o this_o i_o take_v in_o some_o part_n to_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o that_o place_n in_o 1._o cor._n 15.56_o verse_n the_o strength_n of_o sin_n be_v the_o law_n now_o spiritual_o the_o meaning_n of_o it_o be_v this_o that_o all_o the_o strength_n that_o sin_n have_v to_o condemn_v one_o to_o kill_v one_o to_o bring_v death_n it_o be_v by_o the_o law_n that_o i_o take_v to_o be_v the_o special_a scope_n of_o those_o word_n but_o there_o be_v include_v likewise_o in_o that_o expression_n thus_o much_o that_o the_o law_n of_o god_n give_v a_o strength_n to_o go_v a_o journey_n and_o know_v the_o end_n of_o his_o journey_n shall_v be_v very_o glorious_a to_o he_o if_o it_o be_v to_o receive_v a_o crown_n a_o kingdom_n though_o it_o be_v a_o boisterous_a day_n and_o stormy_a weather_n and_o the_o way_n be_v very_o foul_a he_o will_v not_o be_v trouble_v at_o it_o but_o he_o will_v account_v it_o very_o comfortable_a to_o know_v that_o he_o be_v in_o the_o right_a way_n for_o he_o think_v this_o will_v lead_v i_o to_o my_o journey_n end_n and_o when_o i_o come_v there_o that_o will_v make_v amends_o for_o al._n and_o the_o truth_n be_v there_o be_v ease_n and_o rest_n enough_o in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n if_o god_n do_v reveal_v no_o more_o unto_o a_o soul_n than_o this_o these_o be_v the_o way_n that_o lead_v thou_o to_o life_n and_o the_o way_n of_o eternal_a life_n but_o thou_o be_v in_o eternal_a life_n itself_o not_o only_o in_o the_o way_n to_o the_o kingdom_n but_o in_o the_o kingdom_n not_o only_o in_o the_o way_n to_o heaven_n but_o in_o heaven_n it_o be_v eternal_a life_n this_o be_v eternal_a life_n to_o know_v thou_o the_o true_a god_n and_o thy_o son_n who_o thou_o have_v send_v into_o the_o world_n and_o that_o place_n in_o the_o epistle_n of_o st._n john_n he_o speak_v of_o a_o murderer_n one_o that_o do_v hate_v his_o brother_n in_o the_o first_o of_o john_n 3.15_o whosoever_o hate_v his_o brother_n though_o they_o may_v meet_v with_o much_o trouble_n in_o this_o world_n yet_o they_o find_v abundance_n of_o rest_n of_o spirit_n in_o christ_n in_o regard_n of_o those_o trouble_n indeed_o christ_n do_v not_o say_v come_v to_o i_o and_o i_o will_v present_o free_v you_o from_o all_o trouble_n that_o you_o can_v expect_v but_o come_v to_o i_o and_o this_o i_o will_v promise_v you_o that_o you_o shall_v have_v rest_n in_o your_o spirit_n your_o condition_n may_v be_v as_o troublesome_a in_o regard_n of_o outward_a thing_n here_o in_o this_o world_n as_o any_o but_o this_o i_o will_v promise_v have_v no_o affliction_n ever_o befall_v you_o but_o it_o shall_v be_v at_o the_o dispose_n of_o your_o own_o father_n he_o shall_v dispose_v of_o it_o and_o your_o father_n a_o wise_a and_o love_a father_n or_o take_v the_o dear_a friend_n that_o ever_o be_v in_o the_o world_n and_o if_o i_o say_v you_o shall_v be_v make_v sure_a of_o this_o from_o heaven_n that_o you_o shall_v never_o have_v any_o affliction_n in_o this_o world_n but_o it_o shall_v be_v by_o his_o dispose_n will_v not_o this_o bring_v rest_n into_o your_o heart_n though_o you_o have_v a_o disquiet_a heart_n before_o will_v there_o not_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o calm_a quiet_a and_o rest_n upon_o your_o spirit_n i_o make_v no_o question_n but_o if_o such_o a_o voice_n shall_v come_v from_o heaven_n and_o you_o shall_v know_v it_o be_v a_o voice_n from_o heaven_n and_o not_o a_o delusion_n say_v be_v of_o good_a comfort_n you_o that_o be_v so_o trouble_v for_o fear_n of_o loss_n and_o outward_a affliction_n
