XXII 1 Abraham is tempted to offer Isaac 3 He giveth proof of his faith and obedience 11 The angel stayeth him 13 Isaac is exchanged with a ram 14 The place is called Jehovah jireh 15 Abraham is blessed again 20 The generation of Nahor unto Rebekah ANd it came to pass after these things that * Heb. 11.17 God did tempt Abraham and said unto him Abraham And he said †Heb. Behold me Behold here I am 2 And he said Take now thy son thine onely son Isaac whom thou lovest and get thee into the land of Morâ—ah and offer him there for a burnt-offering upon one of the mountain which I will tell thee of 3 ¶ And Abraham rose up early in the morning and sadled his ass and took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son and clave the wood for the burnt offering and rose up and went unto the place of which God had told him 4 Then on the third day Abraham lift up his eyes and saw the place afar off 5 And Abraham said unto his young men Abide you here with the ass â—nd I and the lad will go yonder and worship come again to you 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt-offering and said it upon Isaac his son and he took the fire in his hand and a knife and they went both of them together 7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father and said My father and he said †Heb. Joseph getteth leave of Pharaoh to go to bury him 7 The funeral 15 Joseph comforteth his brethren who craved his pardon 22 His age 23 He seeth the third generation of his sons 24 He prophesieth unto his brethren of their return 25 He taketh an oath of them for his bones 26 He dieth and is chested AND Joseph fell upon his fathers face and wept upon him and kissed him 2 And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father and the physicians embalmed Israel 3 And fourty days were fulfilled for him for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed and the Egyptians †Heb. wept mourned for him threescore and ten days 4 And when the days of his mourning were pact Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh saying If now I have found grace in your eyes speak I pray yon in the ears of Pharaoh saying 5 * Ch. 47.29 My father made me swear saying Lo I die in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan there shalt thou bury me Now therefore let me go up I pray thee and bury my father and I will come again 6 And Pharaoh said Go up and bury thy father according as he made thee swear 7 ¶ And Joseph went up to bury his father and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh the elders of his house and all the elders of the land of Egypt 8 And all the house of Joseph and his brethren and his fathers house onely their little ones and their flocks and their herds they lest in the land of Goshen 9 And there went up with him both chariots and hors-men and it was a very great company 10 And they came to the threshing-floor of Atad which is beyond Jordan and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation and he made a mourning for his father seven days 11 And when the inhabitants of the land the Canaanites saw the mourning in the floor of Atad they said This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians wherefore the name of it was called ‖ That is the mourning of the Egyptians Abel-mizraim which is beyond Jordan 12 And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them 13 For * Act. 7.16 his sons carried him into the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah which Abraham * Ch. 23.16 bought with the field for a possession of a burying-place of Ephron the Hittite before Mamre 14 ¶ And Joseph returned into Egypt he and his brethren and all that went up with him to bury his father after he had buried his father 15 ¶ And when Josephs brethren saw that their father was dead they said Joseph will peradventure hate us and will certainly repute us all the evil which we did unto him 16 And they †Heb. charged sent messengers unto Joseph saying Thy father did command before he died saying 17 So shall ye say unto Joseph Forgive I pray thee now the trespass of thy brethren and their sin for they did unto thee evil And now we pray thee forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father And Joseph wept when they spake unto him 18 And his brethren also went and tell down before his face and they said Behold we be thy servants 19 And Joseph said unto them * Ch. 45.5 Fear not for am I in the place of God 20 But as for you ye thought evil against me but God meant it unto good to bring to pass as it is this day to save much people alive 21 Now therefore fear ye not I will nourish you and your little ones And he comforted them and spake †Heb. to their hearts kindly unto them 22 ¶ And Joseph dwelt in Egypt he and his fathers house and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years 23 And Joseph saw Ephraims children of the third generation * Numb 32.39 the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were †Heb. born brought up upon Josephs knees 24 And Joseph said unto his brethren I die and * Hebr. 11.22 God will surely visit you and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham to Isaac and to Jacob. 25 And * Exod. 13.19 Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel saying God will surely visit you and ye shall carry up my bones from hence 26 So Joseph died being an hundred and ten years old and they embalmed him and he was put in a coffin in Egypt ¶ The second book of Moses called EXODUS CHAP. I. 1 The children of Israel after Josephs death do multiply 8 The more they are oppressed by a new king the more they multiply 15 The godliness of the midwives in saving the men-children alive 22 Pharaoh commandeth the male children to be cast into the river NOw * Gen. 46.8 Ch. 6.14 these are the names of the children of Israel which came into Egypt every man and his houshold came with Jacob. 2 Reuben Simeon Levi and Judah 3 Issachar Zebulun and Beniamin 4 Dan and Naphtali Gad and Ather 5 And all the souls that came out of the †Heb. thigb loyns of Jacob were * Gen. 46.27 Deut 10.22 seventy souls for Joseph was in Egypt already 6 And Joseph died and all his brethren and all that generation 7 ¶ * Act. 7.17 And the children of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly and multiplyed and waxed exceeding mighty and the land was filled with them 8 Now there arose up a new king over Egypt which knew not Joseph 9 And he said unto his people Behold the people of the children of Israel are mo and mightier then we 10 Come on let us deal wisely with them lest they multiply and it come to pass that when there falleth out any war they joyn also unto our enemies and fight against us and so get them up out of the land 11 Therefore they did set over them task-masters to afflict them with their burdens And they built for Pharaoh treasure-cities Pithom and Raamses 12 †Heb. and as they afflicted them so they multiplied c. XXV 1 The sabbath of the seventh year 8 The jubile in the fiftieth year 14 Of Oppression 18 A blessing of obedience 23 The redemption of land 29 of houses 35 Compassion of the poor 39 The usage of bond-men 47 〈◊〉 redemptâ—on of servants ANd the LORD spake unto Moses in mount Sinai saying 2 Speak unto the children of Israel and say unto them When ye come into the land which I give you then shall the land †Heb. rest keep * Ex. 23.10 a sabbath unto the LORD 3 Six years thou shalt sowe thy field and six years thou shalt prune thy vineyard and gather in the fruit thereof 4 But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land a sabbath for the LORD thou shalt neither sowe thy field nor prune thy vineyard 5 That which groweth of it own accord of thy harvest thou shalt not reap neither gather the grapes †Heb. of thy seâ—aration of thy vine undressed for it is a year of rest unto the land 6 And the sabbath of the land shall be meat for you for thee and for thy servant and for thy maid and for thy hired servant and for thy stranger that sojourneth with thee 7 And for thy cattel and for the beast that are in thy land shall all the increase thereof be meat 8 ¶ And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee seven times seven years and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be unto thee fourty and nine years 9 Then shalt thou cause the trumpet †Heb. loud of sound of the jubile to sound on the tenth day of the seventh moneth in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land 10 And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof it shall be a jubile unto you and ye shall return every man unto his possession and ye shall return every man unto his family 11 A jubile shall that fiftieth year be unto you ye shall not sowe neither reap that which groweth of it self in it nor gather the grapes in it of thy vine undressed 12 For it is the jubile it shall be holy unto you ye shall eat the increase thereof out of the field 13 In the year of this jubile ye shall return every man unto his possession 14 And if thou sell ought unto thy neighbour or buyest ought of thy neighbours hand ye shall not oppress one another 15 According to the number of years after the jubile thou shalt buy of thy neighbour and according unto the number of years of the fruits he shall sell unto thee 16 According to the multitude of years thou shalt increase the price thereof and according to the fewness of years thou shalt diminish the price of it for according to the number of the years of the fruits doth he sell unto thee 17 Ye shall not therefore oppress one another but thou shalt fear thy God For I am the LORD your God 18 ¶ Wherefore ye shall do my statutes and keep my judgements and do them and ye shall dwell in the land in safety 19 And the land shall yeeld her fruit and ye shall eat your fill and dwell therein in safety 20 And if ye shall say What shall we eat the seventh year behold we shall not sowe nor gather in our increase 21 Then I will command my blessing upon you in the sixth year and it shall bring forth fruit for three years 22 And ye shall sowe the eighth year and eat yet of old fruit until the ninth year until her fruits come in ye shall eat of the old store 23 ¶ The land shall not be sold ‖ Or to be quite cut off †Heb. for cutting off for ever for the land is mine for ye are strangers and sojourners with me 24 And in all the land of your possession ye shall grant a redemption for the land 25 ¶ If thy brother be waxen poor and hath sold away some of his possession and if any of his kin come to redeem it then shall he redeem that which his brother sold 26 And if the man have none to redeem it and †Heb. his hand hath attained and found sufficiency himself be able to redeem it 27 Then let him count the years of the sale thereof and restore the overplus unto the man to whom he sold it that he may return unto his possession 28 But if he be not able to restore it to him then that which is sold shall remain in the hand of him that hath bought it until the year of jubile and in the jubile it shall go out and he shall return unto his possession 29 And if a man sell a dwelling-house in a walled city then he may redeem it within a whole year after it is sold within a â—ull year may he redeem it 30 And if it be not redemed within the space of a full year then the house that is in the walled city shall be established for ever to him that bought it throughout his generations it shall not go out in the jubile 31 But the houses of
shall first set forth 10 ¶ On the south-side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their armies and the captain of the children of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur 11 And his host and those that were numbred thereof were fourty and six thousand and five hundred 12 And those which pitch by him shall be the tribe of Simâ—on and the captain of the children of Simeon shall be Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai 13 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fifty and â—ine thousand and three hundred 14 Then the tribe of Gad and the captain of the sons of Gad shall be Eliasaph the son of Reuel 15 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty and five thousand and six hundred and fifty 16 All that were numbred in the camp of Reuben were an hundred thousand and fifty and one thousand and four hundred and fifty throughout their armies and they shall set forth in the second rank 17 ¶ Then the tabernacle of the congregation shall set forward with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camp as they encamp so shall they set forward every man in his place by their standards 18 ¶ On the west-side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their armies and the captain of the sons of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud 19 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty thousand and five hundred 20 And by him shall be the tribe of Manasseh and the captain of the children of Manasseh shall be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur 21 And his host and those that were numbred of them were thirty and two thousand and two hundred 22 Then the tribe of Benjamin and the captain of the sons of Benjamin shall be Abidan the son of Gideoni 23 And his host and those that were numbred of them were thirty and five thousand and four hundred 24 All that were numbred of the camp of Ephraim were an hundred thousand and eight thousand and an hundred throughout their armies and they shall go forward in the third rank 25 ¶ The standard of the camp of Dan shall be on the north-side by their armies and the captain of the children of Dan shall be Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai 26 And his host and those that were numbred of them were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred 27 And those that encamp by him shall be the tribe of Asher and the captain of the children of Asher shall be Pagiel the son of Ocran 28 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty and one thousand and five hundred 29 Then the tribe of Naphtali and the captain of the children of Naphtali shall be Ahira the son of Enan 30 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fifty and three thousand and four hundred 31 All they that were numbred in the camp of Dan were an hundred thousand and fifty and seven thousand and six hundred they shall go hindmost with their standards 32 ¶ These are those which were numbred of the children of Israel by the house of their fathers all those that were numbred of the camps throughout their hosts were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty 33 But the Levites were not numbred among the children of Israel as the LORD commanded Moses 34 And the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses so they pitched by their standards and so they set forward every one after their families according to the house of their fathers CHAP. III. 1 The sons of Aaron 5 The Levites are given to the priests for the service of the tabernacleâ— 11 in stead of the first-born 14 The Levites are numbred by their families 21 The families number and charge of the Gershonites 27 of the Koâ—athites 33 of the Merarites 38 The place and charge of Moses and Aaron 40 The first-born are freed by the Levites 44 The overplus are redeemed THese also are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that the LORD spake with Moses in mount Sinai 2 And these are the names of the sons of Aaron Nadab the * Exod. 6.23 first-born and Abihu Eleazar and Ithamar 3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron the priests which were anointed †Heb. whose hand be filled whom he consecrated to minister in the priests office 4 * Lev. 10.1 Ch. 26.61 1 Chr. 24.2 And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD when they offered strange fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai and they had no children and Eleazar and Ithamar ministred in the priests office in the sight of Aaron their father 5 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 6 Bring the tribe of Levi near and present them before Aaron the priest that they may minister unto him 7 And they shall keep his charge and the charge of the whole congregation before the tabernacle of the congregation to do the service of the tabernacle 8 And they shall keep all the instruments of the tabernacle of the congregation and the charge of the children of Israel to do the service of the tabernacle 9 And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons they are wholly given unto him out of the children of Israel 10 And thou shalt appoint Aaron and his sons and they shall wait on their priests office and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death 11 ¶ And the LORD spake unte Moses saying 12 And I behold I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel in stead of all the first-born that openeth the matrice among the children of Israel therefore the Levites shall be mine 13 Because all the first-born are mine * Exod. 13.2 Lev. 27.26 Chap. 8.16 Luk. 2.23 for on the day that I smote all the first born in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto me all the first-born in Israel both man and beast mine they shall be I am the LORD 14 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai saying 15 Number the children of Levi after the house of their fathers by their families every male from a moneth old and upward shalt thou number them 16 And Moses numbred them according to the †Heb. mouth word of the LORD as he was commanded 17 * Gen. 46.11 Exod. 6.16 Ch. 26.57 1 Chro. 6.1 And these were the sons of Levi by their names Gershon and Kohath and Merari 18 And these are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families Libni and Shimei 19 And the sons of Kohath by their families Amram and Izehar Hebron and Uzziel 20 And the sons of Merari by their families Mahli and Mushi these are the families of the Levites according to the house of their fathers 21 Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites and the family
of the Shimites these are the families of the Gershonites 22 Those that were numbred of them according to the number of all the males from a moneth old and upward even those that were numbred of them were seven thousand and five hundred 23 The families of the Gershonites shall pitch behinde the tabernacle west-ward 24 And the chief of the house of the father of the Gershonites shall be Eliasaph the son of Lael 25 And the charge of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation shall be the tabernacle and the tent the covering thereof and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation 26 And the hangings of the court and the curtain for the door of the court which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about and the cords of it for all the service thereof 27 ¶ And of Kohath was the family of the Amramites and the family of the Izeharites and the family of the Hebronites and the family of the Uzzielites these are the families of the Kohathites 28 In the number of all the males from a moneth old and uâ—ward were eight thousand six hundred keeping the charge of the sanctâ—ary 29 The families of the sons of Kohath shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle south-ward 30 And the chief of the house of the father of the families of the Kohathites shall be Elizaphan the son of Uzziel 31 And their charge shall be the ark and the table and the candlestick and the altars and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith they minister and the hanging and all the service thereof 32 And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be chief over the chief of the Levites and have the oversight of them that keep the charge of the sanctuary 33 ¶ Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites and the family of the Mushites these are the families of Merari 34 And those that were numbred of them according to the number of all the males from a moneth old and upward were six thousand and two hundred 35 And the chief of the house of the father of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail these shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle north-ward 36 And †Heb. the office of the charge under the custody and charge of the sons of Merari shall be the boards of the tabernacle and the bars thereof and the pillars thereof and the sockets thereof and all the vessels thereof and all that serveth thereto 37 And the pillars of the court round about and their sockets and their pins and their cords 38 ¶ But those that encamp before the tabernacle toward the east even before the tabernacle of the congregation east-ward shall be Moses and Aaron and his sons keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Israel and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death 39 All that were numbred of the Levites which Moses and Aaron numbred at the commandment of the LORD throughout their families all the males from a moneth old and upward were twenty and two thousand 40 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Number all the first-born of the males of the children of Israel from a moneth old and upward and take the number of their names 41 And thou shalt take the Levites for me I am the LORD in stead of all the first-born among the children of Israel and the cattel of the Levites instead of all the firstlings among the cattel of the children of Israel 42 And Moses numbred as the LORD commanded him all the first-born among the children of Israel 43 And all the first-born males by the number of names from a moneth old and upward of those that were numbred of them were twenty and two thousand two hundred and threescore and thirteen 44 And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 45 Take the Levites in stead of all the first-born among the children of Israel and the cattel of the Levites in stead of their cattel and the Levites shall be mine I am the LORD 46 And for those that are to be redeemed of the two hundred and threescore and thirteen of the first-born of the children of Israel which are more then the Levites 47 Thou shalt even take five shekels a piece by the poll after the shekel of the sanctuary shalt thou take them * Exod. 30.13 Lev. 27.25 Ch. 18.16 Ezek. 45.12 the shekel is twenty gerahs 48 And thou shalt give the money wherewith the odd number of them is to be redeemed unto Aaron and to his sons 49 And Moses took the redemption-money of them that were over and above them that were redeemed by the Levites 50 Of the first-born of the children of Israel took he the money a thousand three hundred and threescore and five shekels after the shekel of the sanctuary 51 And Moses gave the money of them that were redeemed unto Aaron and to his sons according to the word of the LORD as the LORD commanded Moses CHAP. IV. 1 The age and time of the Levites service 4 The carriage of the Kohathites when the priests have taken down the tabernacle 16 The charge of Eleazar 17 The office of the priests 21 The carriage of the Gershonites 29 The carriage of the Merarites 34 The number of the Kohathites 38 of the Gershonites 42 and of the Merarites ANd the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron saying 2 Take the sum of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi after their families by the house of their fathers 3 From thirty years old upward even until fifty years old all that enter into the host to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation 4 This shall be the service of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation about the most holy things 5 ¶ And when the camp setteth forward Aaron shall come and his sons and they shall take down the covering vail and cover the ark of testimony with it 6 And shall put thereon the covering of badgers skins and shall spread over it a cloth wholly of blue and shall put in the staves thereof 7 And upon the * Ex. 25.30 table of shew-bread they shall spread a cloth of blue and put thereon the dishes and the spoons and the bowls and covers to ‖ Or pour out withal cover withal and the continual bread shall be thereon 8 And they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet and cover the same with a covering of badgers skins and shall put in the staves thereof 9 And they shall take a cloth of blue and cover the * Exod. 25.31 candlestick of the light * Exod. 25.37 38. and his lamps and his tongs and his snuff-dishes and all the oyl-vessels thereof wherewith they mâ—nister unto it 10 And they shall put it and all the vessels thereof within a covering of badgers skins and shall put it upon a bar 11 And
him that †Heb. doeth sinneth through ignorance both for him that is born amongst the children of Israel and for the stranger that sojourneth among them 30 ¶ But the soul that doeth ought †Heb. with an high hand presumptuously whether he be born in the land or a stranger the same reproacheth the LORD and that soul shall be cut off from among his people 31 Because he hath despised the word of the LORD and hath broken his commandment that soul shall utterly be cut off his iniquity shall be upon him 32 ¶ And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness they found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath-day 33 And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron and unto all the congregation 34 And they put him * Lev. 24.12 in ward because it was not declared what should be done to him 35 And the LORD said unto Moses The man shall be surely put to death all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp 36 And all the congregation brought him without the camp and stoned him with stones and he died as the LORD commanded Moses 37 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 38 Speak unto the children of Israel and bid * Deut. 22.12 Mat. 23.5 them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue 39 And it shall be unto you for a fringe that ye may look upon it and remember all the commandments of the LORD and do them and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes after which ye use to go a whoring 40 That ye may remember and do all my commandments and be holy unto your God 41 I am the LORD your God which brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God I am the LORD your God CHAP. XVI 1 The rebellion of Korah Dathan and Abiram 23 Moses separateth the people from the rebels tents 31 The earth swalloweth up Korah and a fire consumeth others 36 The censers are reserved to holy use 41 Fourteen thousand and seven hundred are slain by a plague for murmuring against Moses and Aaron 46 Aaron by incense stayeth the plague NOw * Ch. 27.3 Ecclus 45.18 Jude 11. It is much for you Ye take too much upon you seeing all the congregation are holy everyone of them and the LORD is among them wherefore then lift you up your selves above the congregation of the LORD 4 And when Moses heard it he fell upon his face 5 And he spake unto Korah and unto all his company saying Even to morrow the LORD will shew who are his and who is holy and will cause him to come near unto him even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to come near unto him 6 This do take you censers Korah and all his company 7 And put fire therein and put incense in them before the LORD to morrow and it shall be that the man whom the LORD doth choose he shall be holy ye take too much upon you ye sons of Levi. 8 And Moses said unto Korah Hear I pray you ye sons of Levi 9 Seemeth it but a small thing unto you that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them 10 And he hath brought thee near to him and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee and seek ye the priesthood also 11 For which cause both thou and all thy company are gathered together against the LORD and what is Aaron that ye murmure against him 12 ¶ And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab which said We will not come up 13 Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land that floweth with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness except thou make thy self altogether a prince over us 14 Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land that floweth with milk and honey or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards wilt thou †Heb. here out put out the eyes of these men we will not come up 15 And Moses was very wroth and said unto the LORD * Gen. 4 4. Respect not thou their offering I have not taken one ass from them neither have I hurt one of them 16 And Moses said unto Korah Be thou and all thy company before the LORD thou and they and Aaron to morrow 17 And take every man his censer and put incense in them and bring ye before the LORD every man his censer two hundred and fifty censers thou also and Aaron each of you his censer 18 And they took every man his censer and put fire in them and said incense thereon and stood in the door of the tabernacle of the congregation with Moses and Aaron 19 And Korah gathered all the congregation against them unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the congregation 20 And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron saying 21 Separate your selves from among this congregation that I may consume them in a moment 22 And they fell upon their faces and said O God the God of the spirits of all flesh shall one man sin and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation 23 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 24 Speak unto the congregation saying Get you up from about the taberlacle of Korah Dathan and Abiram 25 And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram and the elders of Israel followed him 26 And he spake unto the congregation saying Depart I pray you from the tents of these wicked men and touch nothing of theirs lest ye be consumed in all their sins 27 So they gat up from the tabernacle of Korah Dathan and Abiram on every side and Dathan and Abiram came out and stood in the door of their tents and their wives and their sons and their little children 28 And Moses said Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works for I have not done them of mine own minde 29 If these men die †Heb. as every man dieth the common death of all men or if they be visited after the visitation of all men then

What thing is this thou hast done unto us Why hast thou served us thus that thou calledst us not when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites And they did chide with him †Heb. strongly sharply 2 And he said unto them What have I done now in comparison of you Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better then the vintage of Abiezer 3 God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian Oreb and Zeeb and what was I able to do in comparison of you Then their †Heb. spirit anger was abated toward him when he had said that 4 ¶ And Gideon came to Jordan and passed over he and the three hundred men that were with him saint yet pursuing them 5 And he said unto the men of Succoth Give I pray you loaves of bread unto the people that follow me for they be faint and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna kings of Midian 6 ¶ And the princes of Succoth said Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand that we should give bread unto thine army 7 And Gideon said Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zulmunna into mine hand then I will †Heb. 〈◊〉 tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers 8 And he went up thence to Penuel and spake unto them likewise and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him 9 And he spake also unto the men of Penuel saying When I come again in peace I will break down this tower 10 ¶ Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor and their hosts with them about fifteen thousand men all that were lest of all the hosts of the children of the east for there fell ‖ Or an hundred and twenty thousand every one drewing a sword an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword 11 ¶ And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah and smote the host for the host was secure 12 And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled he pursued after them and took the two kings of Midian Zebah and Zalmunna and †Heb. terrified discomfited all the host 13 ¶ And Gideon the son of Joash returned from battel before the sun was up 14 And caught a young man of the men of Succoth and enquired of him and he †Heb. â—â—rit described unto him the princes of Succoth and the elders thereof even threescore and seventeen men 15 And he came unto the men of Succoth and said Behold Zebah and Zalmunna with whom ye did upbraid me saying Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary 16 And he took the elders of the city and thorns of the wilderness and briers and with them he †Heb. maâ—e to know taught the men of Succoth 17 and he beat down the tower of * 1 King 12.25 Penuel and slew the men of the city 18 ¶ Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna What manner of men were they whom ye
and the LORD delivered them into the hand of the Philistines fourty years 2 ¶ And there was a certain man of Zorah of the family of the Danites whose name was Manoah and his wife was barren and bare not 3 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman and said unto her Behold now thou art barren and bearest not but thou shalt conceive and bear a son 4 Now therefore beware I pray thee and * Numb 6 2 3. drink not wine nor strong drink and eat not any unclean thing 5 For lo thou shalt conceive and bear a son and * Numb 6.5 1 Sam. 1.11 no rasour shall come on his head for the childe shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines 6 ¶ Then the woman came and told her husband saying A man of God came unto me and his countenance was like the countenance of an angel of God very terrible but I asked him not whence he was neither told he me his name 7 But he said unto me Behold thou shalt conceive and bear a son and now drink no wine nor strong drink neither eat any unclean thing for the childe shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death 8 ¶ Then Manoah intreated the LORD and said O my Lord let the man of God which thou didst send come again unto us and teach us what we shall do unto the childe that shall be born 9 And God hearkned to the voice of Manoah and the angel of God came again unto the woman as she sat in the field but Manoah her husband was not with her 10 And the woman made haste and ran and shewed her husband and said unto him Behold the man hath appeared unto me that came unto me the other day 11 And Manoah arose and went after his wife and came to the man and said unto him Art thou the man that spakest unto the woman And he said I am 12 And Manoah said Now let thy words come to pass †Heb. How shall we order the childe and ‖ Or what shall be do †Heb. what shall be his work how shall we do unto him 13 And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah Of all that I said unto the woman let her beware 14 She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the vine neither let her drink wine or strong drink nor eat any unclean thing all that I commanded her let her observe 15 ¶ And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD I pray thee let us detain thee until we shall have made ready a kid †Heb. before thee for thee 16 And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah Though thou detain me I will not eat of thy bread and it thou wilt offer a burnt-offering thou must offer it unto the LORD for Manoah knew not that he was an angel of the LORD 17 And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD What is thy name that when thy sayings come to pass we may do thee honour 18 And the angel of the LORD said unto him Why askest thou thus after my name seeing it is ‖ Or wonderful secret 19 So Manoah took a kid with a meat-offering and offered it upon a rock unto the LORD and the angel did wondrously and Manoah and his wife looked on 20 For it came to pass when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar and Manoah and his wife looked on it and fell on their faces to the ground 21 But the angel of the LORD did no more appear to Manoah and to his wife Then Manoah knew that he was an angel of the LORD 22 And Manoah said unto his wife * Exod. 33.20 Ch. 6.22 We shall surely die because we have seen God 23 But his wife said unto him If the LORD were pleased to kill us he would not have received a burnt-offering and a meat-offering at our hands neither would he have shewed us all these things nor would as at this time have told us such things as these 24 ¶ And the woman bare a son and called his name Samson and the childe grew and the LORD blessed him 25 And the spirit of the LORD began to move him at times in the camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol CHAP. XIV 1 Samson desireth a wife of the Philistines 5 In his journey he killeth a lion 8 In a second journey be findeth honey in the carcase 10 Samsons marriate-feast 12 His riddle by his wife is made known 19 He spoileth thirty Philistines 20 His wife is married to another ANd Samson went down to Timnath and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines 2 And he came up and told his father and his mother and said I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines now therefore get her for me to wife 3 Then his father and his mother said unto him Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren or among all my people that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines And Samson said unto his father Get her for me for †Heb. she is right in mine eyes she pleaseth me well 4 But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the LORD that he sought an occasion against the Philistines for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel 5 Then went Samson down and his father and his mother to Timnath and came to the vineyards of Timnath and behold a young lion roared †Heb. in meeting him against him 6 And the spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him and he rent him as he would have rent a kid and he had nothing in his hand but he told not his father or his mother what he had done 7 And he went down and talked with the woman and she pleased Samson well 8 ¶ And after a time he returned to take her and he turned aside to see the carcase of the lion and behold there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcase of the lion 9 And he took thereof in his hands and went on eating and came to his father and mother and he gave them and they did eat but he told not them that he had taken the honey out of the carcase of the lion 10 ¶ So his father went down unto the woman and Samson made there a feast for so used the young men to do 11 And it came to pass when they saw him that they brought thirty companions to be with him 12 ¶ And Samson said unto them I will now put forth a riddle unto you if you can certainly declare it me within the seven days of the feast and finde it out then I will give
house went out unto them and said unto them Nay my brethren nay I pray you do not so wickedly seeing that this man is come into mine house do not this folly 24 Behold here is my daughter a maiden and his concubine them I will bring out now and humble ye them and do with them what seemeth good unto you but unto this man do not †Heb. the matter of this folly so vile a thing 25 But the men would not hearken to him so the man took his concubine and brought her forth unto them and they knew her and abused her all the night until the morning and when the day began to spring they let her go 26 Then came the woman in the dawning of the day and fell down at the door of the mans house where her lord was till it was light 27 And her lord rose up in the morning and opened the doors of the house and went out to go his way and behold the woman his concubine was falâ— down at the door of the house and her hands were upon the threshold 28 And he said unto her Up and let us be going but none answered Then the man took her up vpon an ass and the man rose up and gat him unto his place 29 ¶ And when he was come into his house he took a knife and laid hold on his concubine and divided her together with her bones into twelve pieces and sent her into all the coasts of Israel 30 And it was so that all that saw it said there was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day consider of it take advice and speak your minds CHAP. XX. 1 The Levite in a general assembly declareth his wrong 8 The decree of the assembly 12 The Benjamites being cited make head against the Israelites 18 The Israelites in two battels lose fourty thousand 26 They destroy by a stratagem all the Benjamites except six hundred THen all the children of Israel went out and the congregation was gathered together as one man from Dan even to Beer-sheba with the land of Gilead unto the LORD in Mizpeh 2 And the chief of all the people even of all the tribes of Israel presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword 3 Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpeh Then said the children of Israel Tell us how was this wickedness 4 And †Heb. the man the Levite the Levite the husband of the woman that was slain answered and said I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin I and my concubine to lodge 5 And the men of Gibeah rose against me and beset the house round about upon me by night and thought to have slain me and my concubine have they †Heb. humbled forced that she is dead 6 And I took my concubine and cut her in pieces and sent her throughout all the countrey of the inheritance of Israel for they have committed lewdness and folly in Israel 7 Behold ye are all children of Israel give here your advice and counsel 8 ¶ And all the people arose as one man saying We will not any of us go to his tent neither will we any of us turn into his house 9 But now this shall be the thing which we will do to Gibeah we will go up by lot against it 10 And we will take ten men of an hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel and an hundred of a thousand and a thousand out of ten thousand to fetch victual for the people that they may do when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin according to all the folly that they have wrought in Israel 11 So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city †Heb. fellows knit together as one man 12 ¶ And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin saying What wickedness is this that is done among you 13 Now therefore deliver us the men the children of Belial which are in Gibeah that we may put them to death and put away evil from Israel But the children of Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel 14 But the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah to go out to battel against the children of Israel 15 And the children of Benjamin were numbred at that time out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword beside the inhabitants of Gibeah which were numbred seven hundred chosen men 16 Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men * Chap. 3.15 left-handed every one could sling stones at an hair breadth and not miss 17 And the men of Israel beside Benjamin were numbred four hundred thousand men that drew sword all these were men of war 18 ¶ And the children of Israel arose and went up to the house of God and asked counsel of God and said Which of us shall go up first to the battâ—l against the children of Benjamin And the LORD said Judah shall go up first 19 And the children of Israel rose up in the morning and encamped against Gibeah 20 And the men of Israel went out to battel against Benjamin and the men of Israel put themselves in aray to fight against them at Gibeah 21 And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites that day twenty and two thousand men 22 And the people the men of Israel encouraged themselves and set their battel again in aray in the place where they put themselves in aray the first day 23 And the children of Israel went up and wept before the LORD until even and asked counsel of the LORD saying Shall I go up again to battel against the children of Benjamin my brother And the LORD said Go up against him 24 And the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day 25 And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men all these drew the sword 26 ¶ Then all the children of Israel and all the people went up and came unto the house of God and wept and sat there before the LORD and fasted that day until even and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings before the LORD 27 And the children of Israel enquired of the LORD for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days 28 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron stood before it in those days saying Shall I yet again go out to battel against the children of Benjamin my brother or shall I cease And the LORD said Go up for to morrow I will deliver them into thine hand 29 And Israel set liers in
wait round about Gibeah 30 And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day and put themselves in aray against Gibeah as at other times 31 And the children of Benjamin went out against the people and were drawn away from the city and they began †Heb. to smite of the people wounded as at c. to smite of the people and kill as at other times in the high-ways of which one goeth up to ‖ Or Bâ—th-el the house of God and the other to Gibeah in the field about thirty men of Israel 32 And the children of Benjamin said They are smitten down before us as at the first But the children of Israel said Let us flee and draw them from the city unto the high ways 33 And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place and put themselves in aray at Baal-tamar and the liers in wait of Israel came forth out of their places even out of the medows of Gibeah 34 And there came against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel and the battel was sore but they knew not that evil was near them 35 And the LORD smote Benjamin before Israel and the children of Israel destroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty and five thousand and an hundred men all these drew the sword 36 So the children of Benjamin saw that they were smitten for the men of Israel gave place to the Benjamites because they trusted unto the liers in wait which they had set beside Gibeah 37 And the liers in wait hasted and rushed upon Gibeah and the liers in wait ‖ Or made a long sound with the trumpets drew themselves along and smote all the city with the edge of the sword 38 Now there was an appointed ‖ Or time signe between the men of Israel †Heb with and the liers in wait that they should make a great †Heb. elevation flame with smoke to rise up out of the city 39 And when the men of Israel retired in the battel Benjamin began †Heb. to smite the wounded to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons for they said Surely they are smitten down before us as in the first battel 40 But when the flame began to arise up out of the city with a pillar of smoke the Benjamites looked behinde them and behold †Heb. the whole consumption the flame of the city ascended up to heaven 41 And when the men of Israel turned again the men of Benjamin were amazed for they saw that evil †Heb. touched them was come upon them 42 Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness but the battel overtook them and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them 43 Thus they inclosed the Benjamites round about and chased them and trode them down ‖ Or from Minuchah c. with ease †Heb. unto over against over against Gibeah toward the sun-rising 44 And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men all these were men of valour 45 And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon and they gleaned of them in the high-ways five thousand men and pursued hard after them unto Gidom and slew two thousand men of them 46 So that all which fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword all these were men of valour 47 * Ch. 21.13 But six hundred men turned and fled to the wilderness unto the rock Rimmon and abode in the rock Rimmon â—our moneths 48 And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin and smote them with the edge of the sword as well the men of every city as the beast and all that †Heb. was found came to hand also they set on fire all the cities that †Heb. were found they came to CHAP. XXI 1 The people bewail the desolation of Benjamin 8 By the destruction of Jabesh-gilead they provide them four hundred wives 16 They advise them to surprise the virgins that danced at Shiloh NOw the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpeh saying There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife 2 And the people came to the house of God and abode there till even before God and lift up their voices and went sore 3 And said O LORD God of Israel why is this come to pass in Israel that there should be to day one tribe lacking in Israel 4 And it came to pass on the morrow that the people rose early and built there an altar and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings 5 And the children of Israel said Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the LORD for they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Mizpeh saying He shall surely be put to death 6 And the children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother and said There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day 7 How shall we do for wives for them that remain seeing we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them of our daughters to wives 8 ¶ And they said What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpeh to the LORD and behold there came none to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly 9 For the people were numbred and behold there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead there 10 And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest and commanded them saying Go smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword with the women the children 11 And this is the thing that ye shall do * Numb 31.17 Ye shall utterly destroy every male and every woman that †Heb. knoweth the lying with man hath lien by man 12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred †Heb. young women virgins young virgins that had known no man by lying with any male and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh which is in the land of Canaan 13 And the whole congregation sent some †Heb. and spake and called to speak to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock Rimmon and to ‖ Or proclaim peace call peaceably unto them 14 And Benjamin came again at that time and they gave them wives which they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead and yet so they sufficed them not 15 And the people repented them for Benjamin because that the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel 16 ¶ Then the elders of the congregation said How shall we do for wives for them that remain seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin 17 And they said There must be an inheritance
LORD and set it in his place in the midst of the tabernacle that David had †pitched for it and David offered burnt-offerings and peace offerings before the LORD 18 And assoon as David had made an end of offering burnt-offerings and peace offerings * 1 Chr. 16.2 he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts 19 And he dealt among all the people even among the whole multiâ—â—de of Israel as well to the women as men to every one a cake of bread and a good piece of flesh and a flagon of wine so all the people departed eâ—â—â—y one to his house 20 ¶ Then David returned to bless his houshold and Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said How glorious was the king of Israel to day who uncovered himself to day in the eyes of the hand-maids of his servants as one of the vain fellows ‖ Or openly shamelesly uncovereth himself 21 And David said unto Michal It was before the LORD which chose me before thy father and before all his house to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD over Israel therefore will I play before the LORD 22 And I will yet be more vile then thus and will be base in mine own sight and ‖ Or of the handmaidâ— of my servants of the maid servants which thou hast spoken of of them shall I be had in honour 23 Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no childe until the day of her death CHAP. VII 1 Nathan first approving the purpose of David to build God an house 4 after by the word of God forbiadeth him 12 He promiseth him benefits and blessings in his seed 18 Davids prayer and thanksgiving ANd it came to pass * 1 Chr. 17.1 when the king sat in his house and the LORD had given him rest round about from all his enemies 2 That the king said unto Nathan the prophet See now I dwell in an house of cedar but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains 3 And Nathan said to the king Go do all that is in thine heart for the LORD is with thee 4 ¶ And it came to pass that night that the word of the LORD came unto Nathan saying 5 Go and tell †Heb. to my servant to David my servant David Thus saith the LORD Shalt thou build me an house for me to dwell in 6 Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children of Israel out of â—gypt even to this day but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle 7 In all the places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel spake I a word with ‖ Chro. 1â— â— any of the judges any of the tribes of Israel whom I commanded to feed my people Israel saying Why build ye not me an house of cedar 8 Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David Thus saith the LORD of hosts * 1 Sam. 16.11 Ps 78.70 I took thee from the sheep-cote †Heb. from after from following the sheep to be ruler over my people over Israel 9 And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest and have out off all thine enemies †Heb. from thy â—ace out of thy sight and have made thee a great name like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth 10 Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them that they may dwell in a place of their own and move no more neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more as beforetime 11 And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house 12 ¶ And * 1 King 8.20 when thy days be fulfilled and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers I will set up thy seed after thee which shall proceed out of thy bowels and I will establish his kingdom 13 * 1 Kin. 5.5 6.12 1 Chr. 22.10 He shall build an house for my name and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever 14 * Heb. 1.5 I will be his father and he shall be my son * Ps 89.30 31 32. if he commit iniquity I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the stripes of the children of men 15 But my mercy shall not depart a way from him as I took it from Saul whom I put away before thee 16 And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee thy throne shall be established for ever 17 According to all these words and according to all this vision so did Nathan speak unto David 18 ¶ Then went king David in and sat before the LORD and he said Who am I O Lord GOD and what is my house that thou hast brought me hitherto 19 And this was yet a small thing in thy sight O Lord GOD but thou hast spoken also of thy servants house for a great while to come and is this the †Heb. law manner of man O Lord GOD 20 And what can David say more unto thee for thou Lord GOD knowest thy servant 21 For thy words sake and according to thine own heart hast thou done all these great things to make thy servant know them 22 Wherefore thou art great O LORD God for there is none like thee neither is there any God beside thee according to all that we have heard with our ears 23 And * Deut. 4.7 what one nation in the earth is like thy people even like Israel whom God went to redeem for a people to himself and to make him a name and to do for you great things and terrible for thy land before thy people which thou redeemest to thee from Egypt from the nations and their gods 24 For thou hast confirmed to thy self thy people Israel to be a people unto thee for ever and thou LORD art become their God 25 And now O LORD God the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy serâ—ant and concerning his house establish it for ever and do as thou hast said 26 And let thy name be magnified for ever saying The LORD of hosts is the God over Israel and let the house of thy servant David be established before thee 27 For thou O LORD of hosts God of Israel hast †Heb. opened the ear revealed to thy servant saying I will build thee an house therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray this prayer unto thee 28 And now O Lord GOD thou art that God and * John 17.17 thy words be true and thou hast promised this goodness unto thy servant 29 Therefore now †Heb. be thou pleased let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant that it may continue for ever before thee for thou O Lord GOD hast spoken
the one half of their beardâ— and cut off their garments in the middle even to their buttocks and sent them away 5 When they told it unto David he sent to meet them because the men were greatly ashamed and the king said Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown and then return 6 ¶ And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob and the Syrians of Zoba twenty thousand footmen and of king Maacah a thousand men and of Ish-tob twelve thousand men 7 And when David heard of it he sent Joab and all the host of the mighty men 8 And the children of Ammon came out and put the battel in aray at the entring in of the gate and the Syrians of Zoba and of Rehob and Ish-tob and Maacah were by themselves in the field 9 When Joab saw that the front of the battel was against him before and behinde he chose of all the choice men of Israel and put them in aray against the Syrians 10 And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother that he might put them in aray against the children of Ammon 11 And he said If the Syrians be too strong for me then thou shalt help me but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee then I will come and help thee 12 Be of good courage and let us play the men for our people and for the cities of our God and the LORD do that which seemeth him good 13 And Joab drew nigh and the people that were with him unto the battel against the Syrians and they fled before him 14 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled then fled they also before Abishai and entred into the city so Joab returned from the children of Ammon and came to Jerusalem 15 ¶ And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel they gathered themselves together 16 And Hadarezer sent and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river and they came to Helam and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them 17 And when it was told David he gathered all Israel together and passed over Jordan and came to Helam and the Syrians set themselves in aray against David and fought with him 18 And the Syrians fled before Israel and David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians and fourty thousand horsâ—men and smote Shobach the captain of their host who died there 19 And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel they made peace with Israel and served them So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more CHAP. XI 1 While Joab besieged Rabbah David committeth adultery with Bath-sheba 6Vriah sent for by David to cover the adultery would not go home neither soler nor drunken 14 He carrieth to Joab the Letter of his death 18 Joab sendeth the news thereof to David 26 David taketh Bath-sheba to wife ANd it came to pass that †Heb. at the return of the year after the year was expired at the time when kings go forth to battel that * 1 Chr. 20.1 David sent Joab and his servants with him and all Israel and they destroved the children of Ammon and besieged Rabbah but David tarried still at Jerusalem 2 ¶ And it came to paâ—s in an evening-tide that David arose from off his bed and walked upon the roof of the kings house and from the roof he saw a woman washing her self and the woman was very beautiful to look upon 3 And David sent and enquired after the woman and one said Is not this Bathsheba the daughter of Eliam the wife of Uriah the Hittite 4 And David sent messengers and took her and she came in unto him and he lay with her ‖ Or and when she had purified her self c. she returned for she was * Lev. 15.19 18.19 purified from her uncleanness and she returned unto her house 5 And the woman conceived and sent and told David and said I am with childe 6 ¶ And David sent to Joab saying send me Uriah the Hittite And Joab sent Uriah to David 7 And when Uriah was come unto him David demanded of him †Heb. of the peace of c. how Joab did and how the people did and how the war prospered 8 And David said to Uriah Go down to thy house and wash thy feet And Uriah departed out of the kings house and there †Heb. went out after him followed him a mess of meat from the king 9 But Uriah slept at the door of the kings house with all the servants of his lord and went not down to his house 10 And when they had told David saying Uriah went not down unto his house David said unto Uriah Camest thou not from thy journey why then didst thou not go down unto thine house 11 And Uriah said unto David The ark and Israel and Judah abide in tents and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are encamped in the open fields shall I then go into mine house to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife as thou livest and as thy soul liveth I will not do this thing 12 And David said to Uriah Tarry here to day also and to morrow I will let thee depart So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day and the morrow 13 And when David had called him he did eat and drink before him and he made him drunk and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord but went not down to his house 14 ¶ And it came to pass in the morning that David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah 15 And he wrote in the letter saying Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the †Heb. strong hottest battel and retire ye †Heb. from aftâ—â— him from him that he may be finitten and die 16 And it came to pass when Joab observed the city that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that valiant men were 17 And the men of the city went out and fought with Joab and there fell some of the people of the servants of David and Uriah the Hittite died also 18 ¶ Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war 19 And charged the messenger saying When thou hast made an end of telling the matters of the war unto the king 20 And it so be that the kings wrath arise and he say unto thee Wherefore approached ye so nigh unto the city when ye did fight knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall 21 Who smote * Judgâ—â— 9. â—3 Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth did not a woman cast a piece of a milstone upon him from the wall that he died in Thebez why went ye nigh
he began to reign and reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem 3 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD yet not like David his father he did according to all things as Joash his father did 4 Howbeit the high places were not taken away as yet the people did sacrifice and burnt incense on the high places 5 ¶ And it came to pass assoon as the kingdom was confirmed in his hand that he slew his servants * Chap. 12.20 which had slain the king his father 6 But the children of the murderers he slew not according unto that which is written in the book of the law of Moses wherein the LORD commanded saying * Deut. 24.16 Ezek. 18.20 The fathers shall not be put to death for the children nor the children be put to death for the fathers but every man shall be put to death for his own sin 7 He slew of Edom in the valley of salt ten thousand and took ‖ Ot the rock Selah by war and called the name of it Joktheel unto this day 8 ¶ Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu king of Israel saying Come let us look one another in the face 9 And Jehoash the king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah saying The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon saying Give thy daughter to my son to wife and there passed by a wilde beast that was in Lebanon and trod down the thistle 10 Thou hast indeed smitten Edom and thine heart hath listed thee up glory of this and tarry †Heb. at thy house at home for why shouldest thou meddle to thy hurt that thou shouldest fall even thou and Judah with thee 11 But Amaziah would not hear therefore Jehoash king of Israel went up and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Beth-shemesh which belongeth to Judah 12 And Judah †Heb. was smitten was put to the worse before Israel and they fled every man to their tents 13 And Jehoash king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah the son of Jehoash the son of Ahaziah at Beth-shemesh and came to Jerusalem and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim unto the corner-gate four hundred cubits 14 And he took all the gold and silver and all the vessels that were found in the house of the LORD and in the treasures of the kings house and hostages and returned to Samaria 15 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Jehoash which he did and his might and how he fought with Amaziah king of Judah are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 16 And Jehoash slept with his fathers and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel and Jeroboam his son reigned in his stead 17 ¶ And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years 18 And the rest of the acts of Amaziah are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 19 Now * 2 Chr 25.27 they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem and he fled to Lachish but they sent after him to Lachish and slew him there 20 And they brought him on horses and he was buried at Jerusalem with his fathers in the city of David 21 ¶ And all the people of Judah took †2 Chr. 26.1 he iâ— called Vzziah Azariah which â—â—as sixteen years old and made him king in stead of his father Amaziah 22 He built Elath and restored it to Judah after that the king slept with his fathers 23 ¶ In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel began to reign in Samaria and reigned fourty and one years 24 And he did that which was evil in the fight of the LORD he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat who made Israel to sin 25 He restored the coast of Israel from the entring of Hamath unto the sea of the plain according to the word of the LORD God of Israel which he spake by the hand of his servant * Mat. 12.39 40 called Jonas Jonan the son of Amittai the prophet which was of Gath-hepher 26 For the LORD saw the affliction of Israel that it was very bitter for there was not any shut up nor any lest nor any helper for Israel 27 And the LORD said not that he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven but he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash 28 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam and all that he did and his might how he warred and how he recovered Damascus and Hamath which belonged to Judah for Israel are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 29 And Jeroboam slept with his fathers even with the kings of Israel and Zachariah his son reigned in his stead CHAP. XV. 1 Azariah his good reign 5 He dying a leper Jotham succeedeth 8 Zachariah the last of Jehu his generation reigning ill is slain by Shallum 13 Shallum reigning a moneth is slain by Menahem 16 Menahem strengthneth himself by Pul. 21 Pekahiah succeedeth him 23 Pekahiah is slain by Pekah 27 Pekah is oppressed by Tiglath-pileser and slain by Hoshea 32 Jothams good reign 36 Ahaz succeedeth him IN the twenty and seventh year of Jeroboam king of Israel began Azariah son of Amaziah king of Judah to reign 2 Sixteen years old was he when he began to reign and he reigned two and fifty years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Jecholiah of Jerusalem 3 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD according to all that his father Amaziah had done 4 Save that the high places were not removed the people sacrificed and burnt incense still on the high places 5 ¶ And the LORD smote the king so that he was a leper unto the day of his death and dwelt in a several house and Jotham the kings son was over the house judging the people of the land 6 And the rest of the acts of Azariah and all that he did are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 7 So Azariah slept with his fathers and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David and Jotham his son reigned in his stead 8 ¶ In the thirty and eighth year of Azariah king of Judah did Zachariah the son of Jeroboam reign over Israel in Samaria six moneths 9 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD as his fathers had done he departed not from the fins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat Who made Israel to sin 10 And Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired
up their eyes afar off and knew him not they sified up their voice and wept and they rent every one his mantle and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven 13 So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights and none spake a word unto him for they saw that his grief was very great CHAP. III. 1 Job curseth the day and services of his birth 13 The ease of death 20 He complaineth of life because of his anguish AFter this opened Job his mouth and cursed his day 2 And Job ‡ Heb. answered snake and said 3 * Chap. 10.18.19 Jer. 10.14 Let the day perish wherein I was born and the night in which it was said There is a man childe conceived 4 Let that day be darkness let not God regard it from above neither let the light shine upon it 5 Let darkness and the shadow of death ‖ Or challenge it stain it let a cloud dwell upon it ‖ Or let them terrifie it as those who have a bitter day let the blackness of the day terrifie it 6 As for that night set it darkness seise upon it ‖ Or let it not rejoyce among the days let it not be joyned unto the days of the year let it not come into the number of the moneths 7 Lo let that night be solitary let no joyful voice come therein 8 Let them curse it that curse the day who are ready to raise up ‖ Or a leviathan their mourning 9 Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark let it look for light but have none neither let it see †Heb the eye-lids of the morning the dawning of the day 10 Because it shut not up the doors of my mothers womb nor hid sorrow from mine eyes 11 Why died I not from the womb why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly 12 Why did the knees prevent me or why the breasts that I should suck 13 For now should I have lien still and been quiet I should have slept then had I been at rest 14 With kings and counsellours of the earth which built desolate places for themselves 15 Or with princes that had gold who filled their houses with silver 16 Or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been as infants which never saw light 17 There the wicked cease from troubling and there the †Heb. wearied in strength weary be at rest 18 There the prisoners rest together they hear not the voice of the oppressour 19 The small and great are there and the servant is free from his master 20 Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery and life unto the bitter in soul 21 Which †Heb. wait long for death but it cometh not and dig for it more then for hid treasures 22 Which rejoyce exceedingly and are glad when they can finde the grave 23 Why is light given to a man whose way is hid * Ch. 19.8 and whom God hath hedged in 24 For my sighing cometh †Heb. before my meat before I eat and my roarings are poured out like the waters 25 For †Heb. I feared a fear and it came upon me the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me and that which I was afraid of is come unto me 26 I was not in safety neither had I rest neither was I quiet yet trouble came CHAP. IV. 1 Eliphaz reproveth Job for want of religion 7 He teacheth Gods judgements to be not for the righteous but for the wicked 12 His fearful vision to humble the excellencies of treatures before God THen Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said 2 If we assay †Heb. a word to commune with thee wilt thou be grieved but †Heb. who can refrain from words who can withhold himself from speaking 3 Behold thou half instructed many and thou hast strengthned the weak hands 4 Thy words have upholden him that was falling and thou hast strengthned †Heb. the bowing knees the feeble knees 5 But now it is come upon thee and thou faintest it toucheth thee and thou art troubled 6 Is not this thy fear thy confidence thy hope and the uprightness of thy ways 7 Remember I pray thee who ever perished being innocent or where were the righteous cut off 8 Even as I have seen * Prov. 22.8 Hos 10.13 they that plow iniquity and sowe wickedness reap the same 9 By the blast of God they perish and ‖ That is by his anger as Isa 30.33 by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed 10 The roaring of the lion and the voice of the fierce lion and the teeth of the young lions are broken 11 The old lion perisheth for lack of prey and the stout lions whelps are scattered abroad 12 Now a thing was †Heb. by stealth secretly brought to me and mine ear received a little thereof 13 In thoughts from the visions of the night when deep sleep falleth on men 14 Fear †Heb. meâ— me came upon me and trembling which made †Heb. the multitude of my bones all my bones to shake 15 Then a spirit passed before my face the hair of my flesh stood up 16 It stood still but I could not discern the form thereof an image was before mine eyes ‖ Or I heard a still voice there was silence and I heard a voice saying 17 Shall mortal man be more just then God shall a man be more pure then his maker 18 Behold he * Ch. 15.15 2 Pet. 2.4 put no trust in his servants ‖ Or not in his angels in whom be piâ—â— liâ—ht and his angels he charged with folly 19 How much less on them that dwell in * 2 Cor. 5.1 houses of clay whose foundation is in the dust which are crushed before the moth 20 They are †Heb. beaten in pieces destroyed from morning to evening they perish for ever without any regarding it 21 Doth not their excellency which is in them go away they die even without wisdom CHAP. V. 1 The harm of inconsideration 3 The end of the wicked is misery 6 God is to be regarded in affliction 17 The happy end of Gods correction CAll now if there be any that will answer thee and to which of the saints wilt thou ‖ Or look turn 2 For wrath killeth the foolish man and ‖ Or inaignation envy stayeth the silly one 3 I have seen the foolish taking root but suddenly I cursed his habitation 4 His children are far from safety and they are crushed in the gate neither is there any to deliver them 5 Whose harvest the hungry eateth up and taketh it even out of the thorns and the robber swalloweth up their substance 6 Although ‖ Or iniquity affliction cometh not forth of the dust neither doth trouble spring out of the ground 7 Yet man is born unto ‖

XXIX 1 Job bemoaneth himself of his former prosperity and honour MOreover Job †Heb. aâ—â—ed tâ— take up continuâ—d his parable and said 2 Oh that I were as in moneths past as in the days when God preserved me 3 When his ‖ Or lamp candle shined upon my head and when by his light I walked through darkness 4 As I was in the days of my youth when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle 5 When the Almighty was yet with me when my children were about me 6 When I washed my steps with butter and the rock poured †Heb. with me me out rivers of oyl 7 When I went out to the gate through the city when I prepared my seat in the street 8 The young men saw me and hid themselves and the aged arose and stood up 9 The princes refrained talking and laid their hand on their mouth 10 †Heb. the voice of the nobles was hid The nobles held their peace and their tongue cleaved to the root of their mouth 11 When the ear heard me then it blessed me and when the eye saw me it gave witness to me 12 Because I delivered the poor that cried and the fatherless and him that had none to help him 13 The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me and I caused the widows heart to sing for joy 14 I put on righteousness and it clothed me my judgement was as a robe and a diadem 15 I was eyes to the blinde and feet was I to the lame 16 I was a father to the poor and the cause which I knew not I searched out 17 And I brake †Heb. the jaw-teeth of the â—â—inâ—ers the jaws of the wicked and †Heb. cast pluckt the spoil out of his teeth 18 Then I said I shall die in my nest and I shall multiply my days as the sand 19 My root was †Heb. opened spread out bâ— the waters and the dew lay all night upon my branch 20 My glory was †Heb. new fresh in me and my bowe was †Heb. changed renewed in my hand 21 Unto me men gave ear and waited and
sling-stones are turned with him into stubble 29 Darts are counted as stubble he laugheth at the shaking of a spear 30 †Heb. sharp pieces of the potsheâ—â—d Sharp stones are under him he spreadeth sharp-pointed things upon the mire 31 He maketh the deep to boyl like a pot he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment 32 He maketh a path to shine after him one would think the deep to be hoary 33 Upon earth there is not his like ‖ Or who behave themselves without fear who is made without fear 34 He beholdeth all high things he is a king over all the children of pride CHAP. XLII 1 Job submitteth himself unto God 7 God preferring Jobs cause maketh his friends submit themselves and accepteth him 10 He magnifieth and blesseth Job 16 Jobs age and death THen Job answered the LORD and said 2 I know that thou canst do every thing and that ‖ Or no thought of thine can be hindred no thought can be withholden from thee 3 * Chap. 38.2 Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge therefore have I uttered that I understood not things too wonderful for me which I knew not 4 Hear I beseech thee and I will speak I will demand of thee and declare thou unto me 5 I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear but now mine eye seeth thee 6 Wherefore I abhor my self and repent in dust and ashes 7 ¶ And it was so that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite My wrath is kindled against thee and against thy two friends for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right as my servant Job hath 8 Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams and go to my servant â—ob and offer up for your selves a burnt-offering and my servant Job shall pray for you for †Heb. his face or person him will I accept lest I deal with you after your folly in that ye have not spoken of me the thing which is right like my servant Job 9 So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went and did according as the LORD commanded them the LORD also accepted †Heb. the face of Job Job 10 And the LORD turned the captivity of Job when he prayed for his friends also the LORD †Heb. added all that had been to Job unto the double gave Job twice as much as he had before 11 Then came there unto him all his brethren and all his sisters and all they that had been of his acquaintance before and did eat bread with him in his house and they bemoaned him and comforted him over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him every man also gave him a piece of money and every one an ear-ring of gold 12 So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more then his beginning for he had fourteen thousand sheep and six thousand camels and a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand she-asses 13 He had also seven sons and three daughters 14 And he called the name of the first Jemima and the name of the second Kezia and the name of the third Keren-happuch 15 And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren 16 After this lived Job an hundred and fourty years and saw his sons and his sons sons even four generations 17 So Job died being old and full of days ¶ The book of PSALMS PSAL. I. 1 The happiness of the godly 4 The unhappiness of the ungodly BLessed * Pro. 4.14 is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ‖ Or wicked ungodly nor standeth in the way of sinners nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD * Josh 1.8 Psal 119.1 and in his law doth he meditate day and night 3 And he shall be like a tree * Jer. 17.8 planted by the rivers of water that bringeth forth his fruit in his season his leaf also shall not †Heb. fade wither and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper 4 The ungodly are not so but are * Psal 35.5 Isa 17.13 like the chaff which the wind driveth away 5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgement nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous 6 For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous but the way of the ungodly shall perish PSAL. The security of Gods protection ¶ A psalm of David * 2 Sam. 15 14. when he fled from Absalom his son LORD how are they increased that trouble me many are they that rise up against me 2 Many there be which say of my soul There is no help for him in God Selah 3 But thou O LORD art a shield ‖ Or about for me my glory and the sister up of mine head 4 I cried unto the LORD with my voice and he heard me out of his holy hill Selah 5 * Psal 4 8. And say Hear ye the word of the LORD O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Behold I will bring evil upon this place the which whosoever heareth his ears shall * 1 Sam. 3.11 tingle 4 Because they have forsaken me and have estranged this place and have burnt incense in it unto other gods whom neither they nor their fathers have known nor the kings of Judah and have filled this place with the bloud of innocents 5 They have built also the high places of Baal to burn their sons with fire for burnt-offerings unto Baal * Ch. 7.31 32. which I commanded not nor spake it neither came it into my minde 6 Therefore behold the days come saith the LORD that this place shall no more be called Tophet nor the valley of the son of Hinnom but the valley of slaughter 7 And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies and by the hands of them that seek their lives and their * Ch. 7.33 and 16.4 carcases will I give to be meat for the fowls of the heaven and for the beasts of the earth 8 And I will make this city * Ch. 18.16 and 49.13 and 50.13 desolate and an hissing every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof 9 And I will cause them to eat the * Lev. 26.29 Deu. 28.53 Lam. 4.10 flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend in the siege and straitness wherewith their enemies and they that seek their lives shall straiten them 10 Then shalt thou break the bottle in the sight of the men that go with thee 11 And shalt say unto them Thus saith the LORD of hosts Even so will I break this people and this city as one breaketh a potters vessel that cannot †Heb. be healed be made whose again and they shall * Ch. 7.32 bury them in Tophet till there be no place to bury 12 Thus will I do unto this place saith the LORD and to the inhabitants thereof and even make this city as Tophet 13 And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah shall be defiled as the place of Tophet because of all the houses upon whose * Ch. 32.29 roofs they have burnt incense unto all the host of heaven and have poured out drink-offerings unto other gods 14 Then came Jeremiah from Tophet whither the LORD had sent him to prophesie and he stood in the court of the LORDS house and said to all the people 15 Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Behold I will bring upon this city and upon all her towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it because they have hardned their necks that they might not hear my words CHAP. XX. 1 Pashur smiting Jeremiah receiveth a new name and a fearful doom 7 Jeremiah complaineth of contempt 10 of treachery 14 and of his birth NOw Pashur the son of * 1 Chr. 24.14 Immer the priest who was also chief governour in the house of the LORD heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things 2 Then Pashur smote Jeremiah the prophet and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin which was by the house of the LORD 3 And it came to pass on the morrow that Pashur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks Then said Jeremiah unto him The LORD hath not called thy name Pashur but ‖ That is Fear

I. 1 Josias his charge to the priests and Levites 7 A great pass-over is kept 32 His death is much lamented 34 His successours 53 The temple eity and people are destroyed 56 Therest are carried unto Babylon ANd Josias held the * 2 Kings 23.21 2 Chr. 35.1 feast of the pass-over in Jerusalem unto his Lord and offered the pass-over the fourteenth day of the first moneth 2 Having set the priests according to their daily courses being arayed in long garments in the temple of the Lord. 3 And he spake unto the Levites the holy ministers of Israel that they should hallow themselves unto the Lord to set the holy ark of the Lord in the house that king Solomon the son of David had built 4 And said Ye shall no more bear the ark upon your shoulders now therefore serve the Lord your God and minister unto his people Israel and prepare you after your families and kindreds 5 According as David the king of Israel prescribed and according to the magnificence of Solomon his son and standing in the temple according to the several dignity of the families of you the Levites who minister in the presence of your brethren the children of Israel 6 Offer the pass-over in order and make ready the sacrifices for your brethren and keep the pass-over according to the commandment of the Lord which was given unto Moses 7 And unto the people that was found there Josias gave thirty thousand lambs and kids and three thousand calves these things were given of the kings allowance according as he promised to the people to the priests and to the Levites 8 And Helkias Zacharias and ‖ Or Jâ—â—iâ—l Syelus the governours of the temple gave to the priests for the pass-over two thousand and six hundred sheep and three hundred calves 9 And Jeconias and Samaias and Nathanael his brother and Assabias and Ochiel and Joram captains over thousands gave to the Levites for the pass-over five thousand sheep and ‖ Or fâ—â—e hundred calves 2 Chr. 35.9 seven hundred calves 10 And when these things were done the priests and Levites having the unleavened bread stood in very comely order according to the kindreds 11 And according to the several dignities of the fathers before the people to offer to the Lord as it is written in the book of Moses * 2 Chr. 35.13 and so of the â—â—â—locks and thus did they in the morning 12 And they rosted the pass-over with fire as appertaineth as for the sacrifices they sod them in brass pots and pans ‖ Or with good sâ—â—d or willingly 2 Chr. 35.13 with a good savour 13 And set them before all the people and afterward they prepared for themselves and for the priests their brethren the sons of Aaron 14 For the priests offered the fat until night and the Levites prepared for themselves and the priests their brethren the sons of Aaron 15 The holy singers also the sons of Asaph were in their order according to the appointment * 2. Chr. 35.15 of David and Asaph of David to wit Asaph Zacharias and Jeduthun who was * 2 Chr. 35.15 the kings stâ—â— of the kings retinue 16 Moreover the porters were at every gate it was not lawful for any to go from his ordinary service for their brethren the Levites prepared for them 17 Thus were the things that belonged to the sacrifices of the Lord accomplished in that day that they might hold the pass-over 18 And offer sacrifices upon the altar of the LORD according to the commandment of king Josias 19 So the children of Israel which were present held the pass-over at that time and the feast of sweet bread seven days 20 And such a pass-over was not kept in Israel since the time of the prophet Samuel 21 Yea all the kings of Israel held not such a pass-over as Josias and the priests and the Levites and the Jews held with all Israel that were found dwelling at Jerusalem 22 In the eighteenth year of the reign of Josias was this pass-over kept 23 And the works of Josias were upright before his Lord with an heart full of godliness 24 As for the things that came to pass in his time they were written in former times concerning those
utterly ‖ Or abolished rooted out 11 Who then should make more mourning then she that hath lost so great a multitude and not thou which art sorry but for one 12 But if thou sayest unto me My lamentation is not like the earths because I have lost the fruit of my womb which I brought forth with pains and bare with sorrows 13 ‖ But the earth after the manner of the earth whereinto the present multitude is gone again as it came out But the earth not so for the multitude present in it according to the course of the earth is gone as it came 14 Then say I unto thee Like as thou hast brought forth with labour even so the earth also hath given her fruit namely man ever since the beginning unto him that made her 15 Now therefore keep thy sorrow to thy self and bear with a good courage that which hath be faln thee 16 For it thou shalt acknowledge the determination of God to be just thou shalt both receive thy son in time and shalt be commended amongst women 17 Go thy way then into the city to thine husband 18 And she said unto me That will I not do I will not go into the city but here will I die 19 So I proceeded to speak further unto her and said 20 Do not so but be counselled by me for how many are the adversities of Sion be comforted in regard of the sorrow of Jerusalem 21 For thou seest that our sanctuary is said waste our altar broken down our temple destroyed 22 Our psaltery is laid on the ground our song is put to silence our rejoycing is at an end the light of our candlestick is put out the ark of our covenant is spoiled our holy things are defiled and the name that is called upon us is almost profaned our children are put to shame our priests are burnt our Levites are gone into captivity our virgins are defiled and our wives ravished our righteous men carried away our little ones destroyed our young men are brought in bondage and our strong men are become weak 23 And which is the greatest of all the seal of Sion hath now lost her honour for she is delivered into the hands of them that hate us 24 And therefore shake off thy great heaviness and put away the multitude of sorrows that the Mighty may be merciful unto thee again and the Highest shall give thee rest and ease from thy labour 25 And it came to pass while I was talking with her behold her face upon a sudden shined exceedingly and her countenance glistered so that I was afraid of her and mused what it might be 26 And behold suddenly she made a great cry very fearful so that the earth shook at the noise of the woman 27 And I looked and behold the woman appeared unto me no more but there was a city builded and a large place shewed it self from the foundations then was I afraid and cried with a loud voice and said 28 Where is * Ch. 4.1 Uriel the angel who came unto me at the first for he hath caused me to fall ‖ Or into the multitude in a trance into many trances and mine end is turned into corruption and my prayer to rebuke 29 And as I was speaking these words behold he came unto me and looked upon me 30 And so I say as one that had been dead and mine understanding was taken from me and he took me by the right hand and comforted me and set me upon my feet and said unto me 31 What aileth thee and why art thou so disquieted and why is thine understanding troubled and the thoughts of thine heart 32 And I said Because thou hast forsaken me and yet I did according to thy * Chap 5.20 words and I went into the field and so I have seen and yet see that I am not able to express 33 And he said unto me Stand up manfully and I will advise thee 34 Then said I Speak on my lord in me onely forsake me not lest I die frustrate of my hope 35 For I have seen that I knew not and hear that I do not know 36 Or is my sense deceived or my soul in a dream 37 Now therefore I beseech thee that thou wilt shew thy servant of this ‖ Or trance vision 38 He answered me then and said Hear me and I shall inform thee and tell thee wherefore thou art afraid for the Highest will reveal many secret things unto thee 39 He hath seen that thy ‖ Or purpose way is right for that thou sorrowest continually for thy people and makest great lamentation for Sion 40 This therefore is the meaning of the vision which thou lately sawest 41 Thou sawest a woman mourning and thou beganst to comfort her 42 But now seest thou the likeness of the woman no more but there appeared unto thee a city builded 43 And whereas she told thee of the death of her son this is the ‖ Or interpretation solution 44 This woman whom thou sawest is Sion and whereas she said unto thee even she whom thou seest as a city builded 45 Whereas I say she said unto thee that she hath been thirty years barren those are the thirty years wherein there was no offering made in her 46 But after thirty years Solomon builded the city and offered offerings and then bare the barren a son 47 And whereas she told thee that she nourished him with labour that was the dwelling in Jerusalem 48 But whereas she said unto thee That my son coming into his marriage-chamber hapned to have a fall and died this was the destruction that came to Jerusalem 49 And behold thou sawest her likeness and because she mourned for her son thou beganst to comfort her and of these things which have chanced these are to be opened unto thee 50 For now the most High seeth that thou art grieved unfeignedly and sufferest from thy whole heart for her so hath he shewed thee the brightness of her glory and the comeliness of her beauty 51 And therefore I bade thee remain in the field where no house was builded 52 For I knew that the Highest would shew this unto thee 53 Therefore I commanded thee to go into the field where no foundation of any building was 54 For in the place wherein the Highest beginneth to shew his city there can no mans building be able to stand 55 And therefore sear not let not thine heart he affrighted but go thy way in and see the beauty and greatness of the building as much as thine eyes be able to see 56 And then shalt thou hear as much as thine ears may comprehend 57 For thou art blessed above many other and ‖ Or at called to be with c. art called with the Highest and so are but few 58 But to morrow at night thou shalt remain here 59 And so shall the Highest shew thee visions of the ‖ Or
upon the wicked 12 upon Egypt 28 An horrible vision 43 Babylon and Asia are threatned BEhold speak thou in the ears of my people the words of prophesie which I will put in thy mouth saith the Lord. 2 And cause them to be written in paper for they are faithful and true 3 Fear not the imaginations against thee let not the incredulity of them trouble thee that speak against thee 4 For all the unfaithful shall die in their unfaithfulness 5 Behold saith the Lord I will bring plagues upon the world the sword famine death and destruction 6 For wickedness hath exceedingly polluted the whose earth and their hurtful works are fulfilled 7 Therefore faith the Lord 8 I will hold my tongue no more as touching their wickedness which they profanely commit neither will I suffer them in those things in which they wickedly exercise themselves behold the * Rev. 6.10 â— 19.2 innocent and râ—ghteouâ— bloâ—d cryeth unto me and the souls of the just complain continually 9 And therefore faith the Lord. I will surely avenge them and receive unto me all the innocent bloud from among them 10 Behold my people is led as a flock to the slaughter I will not suffer them now to dwell in the land of Egypt 11 But I will bring them with a mighty hand and a stretched out arm and smite Egypt with plagues as before and will destroy all the land thereof 12 Egypt shall mourn and the foundation of it shall be smitten with the plague and punishment that God shall bring upon it 13 They that till the ground shall mourn for their seeds shall fail through the blasting and hail and with a fearful constellation 14 Wo to the world and them that dwell therein 15 For the sword and their destruction draweth nigh and one people shall stand up to fight against another and swords in their hands 16 For there shall be sedition among men and invading one another they shall not regard their kings nor princes and the course of their actions shall stand in their power 17 A man shall desire to go into a city and shall not be able 18 For because of their pride the cities shall be troubled the houses shall be destroyed and men shall be afraid 19 A man shall have no pity upon his neighbour but shall destroy their houses with the sword and spoil their goods because of the lack of bread and for great tribulation 20 Behold saith God I will call together all the kings of the earth to reverence me which are from the rising of the sun from the south from the east and Libanus to turn themselves one against another and repay the things that they have done to them 21 Like as they do yet this day unto my chosen so will I do also and recompense in their bosom Thus saith the Lord God 22 My right hand shall not spare the sinners and my sword shall not cease over them that shed innocent bloud upon the earth 23 The fire is gone forth from his wrath and hath consumed the foundations of the earth and the sinners like the straw that is kindled 24 Wo to them that sin and keep not my commandments saith the Lord 25 I will not spare them go your way ye children from the power defile not my sanctuary 26 For the Lord knoweth all them that sin against him and therefore delivereth he them unto death and destruction 27 For now are the plagues come upon the whole earth and ye shall remain in them for God shall not deliver you because ye have finned against him 28 Behold an horrible vision and the appearance thereof from the east 29 Where the nations of the dragons of Arabia shall come out with many chariots and the multitude of them shall be carried as the wind upon earth that all they which hear them may fear and tremble 30 Also the Carmanians raging in wrath shall go forth as the wilde bores of the wood and with great power shall they come and joyn battel with them and shall waste a portion of the land of the Assyrians 31 And then shall the dragons have the upper hand remembring their nature and if they shall turn themselves conspiring together in great power to persecute them 32 Then these shall be troubled and keep silence through their power and shall flee 33 And from the land of the Assyrians shall the enemy besiege them and consume some of them and in their host shall be fear and dread and strife ‖ Or against among their kings 34 Behold clouds from the east and from the north unto the south and they are very horrible to look upon full of wrath and storm 35 They shall smite one upon another and they shall smite down a great multitude of stars upon the earth even their own star and bloud shall be from the sword unto the belly 36 And dung of men unto the camels ‖ Or pastern or litter hough 37 And there shall be great fearfulness and trembling upon earth and they that see the wrath shall be afraid and trembling shall come upon them 38 And then shall there come great storms from the south and from the north and another part from the west 39 And strong winds shall arise from the east and shall open it and the cloud which he raised up in wrath and the star stirred to cause fear toward the east and west wind shall be destroyed 40 The great and mighty clouds shall be lifted up full of wrath and the star that they may make all the earth afraid and them that dwell therein and they shall pour out over every high and eminent place and horrible star 41 Fire and hail and flying swords and many waters that all fields may be full and all rivers with the abundance of great waters 42 And they shall break down the cities and walls mountains and hills trees of the wood and grass of the medows and their corn 43 And they shall go stedfastly unto Babylon and ‖ Or destroy make her afraid 44 They shall come to her and besiege her the star and all wrath shall they pour out upon her then shall the dust and smoke go up unto the heaven and all they that be about her shall bewail her 45 And they that remain under her shall do service unto them that have put her in fear 46 And thou Asia that art ‖ Or like unto Babylon partaker of the hope of Babylon and art the glory of her person 47 Wo be unto thee thou wretch because thou hast made thy self like unto her and hast deckt thy daughters in wheredom that they might please and glory in thy lovers which have alway desired to commit whoredom with thee 48 Thou hast followed her that is hated in all her works and inventions therefore saith God 49 I will send plagues upon thee widowhood poverty famine sword and pestilence to waste thy houses with destruction and death 50 And the glory of
one accord and said unto her Thou art the exaltation of Jerusalem thou art the great glory of Israel thou art the great rejoycing of our nation 10 Thou hast done all these thingâ— by thine hand thou hast done much good to Israel and God is pleased therewith blessed be thou of the Almighty Lord for evermore and all the people said So be it 11 And the people spoiled the camp the space of thirty days and they gave unto Judith Holofernes his tent and all his plate and beds and vessels and all his stuff and she took it and laid it on her mule and made ready her carts and laid them thereon 12 Then all the women of Israel ran together to see her and blessed her and made a dance among them for her and she took branches in her hand and gave also to the women that were with her 13 And they put a garland of olive upon her and her maid that was with her and she went before all the people in the dance leading all the women and all the men of Israel followed in their armour with garlands and with longs in their mouths CHAP. XVI 6 The song of Judith 19 She dedicateth the stuff of Holofernes 23 She died at Bethullas a widow of great honour 24 All Israel did lament her death THen Judith began to sing this thanksgiving in all Israel and all the people sang after her ‖ Or. this prâ—ising this song of praise 2 And Judith said Begin unto my God with timbrels sing unto my Lord with cymbals tune unto him a ‖ Or. Psalm and praise new psalm exalt him and call upon his name 3 For God breaketh the battels for amongst the camps in the midst of the people he hath delivered me out of the hands of them that persecuted me 4 Assur came out of the mountains from the north he came with ten thousands of his army the * Chap. 2.19 multitude whereof stopped the torrents and their hors-men have covered the hills 5 He bragged that he would burn up my borders and kill my young men with the sword and dash the sucking children against the ground and make mine infants as a prey and my virgins as a spoil 6 But the Almighty Lord hath disappointed them by the hand of a woman 7 For the mighty one did not fall by the young men neither did the sons of the Titans smite him nor high giants set upon him but Judith the daughter of Merari weakned him with the beauty of her countenance 8 For she put off the garment of her widowhood for the exaltation of those that were oppressed in Israel and anointed her face with ointment and bound her hair in a †Gr. mitrâ— tire and took a linen garment to deceive him 9 Her sandals ravished his eyes her beauty took his minde prisoner and the fauchion passed through his neck 10 The Perlians quaked at her boldness and the Medes were ‖ Or confounded daunted at her hardiness 11 Then my afflicted shouted for joy and my weak ones cried aloud but ‖ the Assyrians they were astonished these lifted up their voices but they were overthrown 12 The sons of the damsels have pierced them through and wounded them as fugitives children they perished by the battel of the Lord. 13 I will sing unto the Lord ‖ Or a song of praise a new song O Lord thou art great and glorious wonderful in strength and invincible 14 Let all creatures serve thee for thou spakest and they were made thou didst send forth thy spirit and it created them and there is none that can resist thy voice 15 For the mountains shall be moved from their foundations with the waters the rocks shall melt as wax at thy presence yet thou art merciful to them that fear thee 16 For all sacrifice is too little for a sweet savour unto thee and all the fat is not sufficient for thy burnt-offering but he that feareth the Lord is great at all times 17 Wo to the nations that rise up against my kindred the Lord Almighty will take vengeance of them in the day of judgement in putting fire and worms in their flesh and they shall feel them and weep for ever 18 Now assoon as they entred into Jerusalem they worshipped the Lord and assoon as the people were purified they offered their burnt-offerings and their free-offerings and their gifts 19 Judith also dedicated all the stuff of Holofernes which the people had given her and gave the canopy which she had taken out of his bed-chamber for a gift unto the Lord. 20 So the people continued feasting in Jerusalem before the sanctuary for the space of three moneths and Judith remained with them 21 After this time every one returned to his own inheritance and Judith went to Bethulia and remained in her own possession and was in her time honourable in all the countrey 22 And many desired her but none knew her all the days of her life after that Manasses her husband was dead and was gathered to his people 23 But she increased more and more in honour and waxed old in her husbands house being an hundred and five years old and made her maid free so she died in Bethulia and they buried her in the ‖ Or sepulebre cave of her husband Manasses 24 And the house of Israel lamented her * Gen. 50.10 seven days and before she died she did distribute her goods to all them that were nearest of kindred to Manasses her husband and to them that were the nearest of her kindred 25 And there was none that made the children of Israel any more afraid in the days of Judith nor a long time after her death ¶ The rest of the chapters of the book of ESTHER which are found neither in the Hebrew nor in the Caldee Part of the tenth Chapter after the Greek 5 Mardotheus remembreth and expoundeth his dream of the river and the two draâ—ons THen Mardocheus said God hath done these things 5 For I remember a dream which I saw concerning these matters and nothing thereof hath failed 6 A little fountain became a river and there was light and the sun and much water this river is Esther whom the king married and made queen 7 And the two dragons are I and Aman. 8 And the nations were those that were assembled to destroy the name of the Jews 9 And my nation is this Israel which cried to God and were saved for the Lord hath saved his people and the Lord hath delivered us from all those evils and God hath wrought signs and great wonders which have not been done among the Gentiles 10 Therefore hath he made two lots one for the people of God and another for all the Gentileâ— 11 And these two lots came at the hour and time and day of Judgement before God amongst all nations 12 So God remembred his people and justified his inheritance 13 Therefore those days shall be unto them in

XVII 1 Why the Egyptians were punished with darkness 4 The terrours of that darkness 11 The terrours of an ill conscience FOr great are thy judgements and cannot be expressed therefore ‖ Or souls that will not be reformed unnurtured souls have erred 2 For when unrighteous men thought to oppress the holy nation they being shut up ‖ Or under their roofs in their houses the prisoners of darkness and fettered with the bonds of a long night lay there ‖ Or fugitives exiled from the eternal providence 3 For while they supposed to lie hid in their secret sins they were scattered ‖ Or in undera dark vail of forgetfulness being horribly astonished and troubled with strange ‖ Or sights apparitions 4 For neither might the corner that held them keep them from fear but noises as of waters falling down sounded about them and sad visions appeared unto them with heavy countenances 5 No power of the fire might give them light neither could the bright flames of the stars endure to lighten that horrible night 6 Onely there appeared unto them a fire kindled of it self very dreadful for being much terrified they thought the things which they saw to be worse then the sight they saw not 7 * Ex. 7.12 8.7 19. XVIII 4 Why Egypt was punished with darkness 5 and with the death of their children 18 They themselves saw the cause thereof 20 God also plagued his own people 21 By what means that plague was stayed NEvertheless thy saints had a very great * Exod. 20.23 light whose voice they hearing and not seeing their shape because they also had not suffered the same things they counted them happy 2 But for that they did not hurt them now of whom they had been wronged before they thanked them and besought them pardon for that they had been enemies 3 * Ex. 13.21 14.24 Ps 78.14 105.39 In stead whereof thou gavest them a burning pillar of fire both to be a guide of the unknown journey and an harmless sun to entertain them honourably 4 For they were worthy to be deprived of light and imprisoned in darkness who had kept thy sons shut up by whom the ‖ Or incorruptible uncorrupt light of the law was to be given unto the world 5 * Exod. 14 â—4 25. Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king behold there came wise-men from the east to Jorusalem 2 Saying Where is he that is born King of the Jews for we have â—en his star in the east and are come to worship him 3 When Herod the king had heard these things he was troubled and all Jerusalem with him 4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together he demanded of them where Christ should be born 5 And they said unto him In Bethlehem of Judea for thus it is written by the prophet 6 * Mic. 5.2 Joh. 7.42 And thou Bethlehem in the land of Juda art not the least among the princes of Juda for out of thee shall come a Governour that shall ‖ Or seed rule my people Israel 7 Then Herod when he had privily called the wise-men enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said Go and search diligently for the young childe and when ye have found him bring me word again that I may come and worship him also 9 When they had heard the king they departed and so the star which they saw in the east went before them till it came and stood over where the young childe was 10 When they saw the star they rejoyced with exceeding great joy 11 ¶ And when they were come into the house they saw the young childe with Mary his mother and tell down and worshipped him and when they had opened their treasures they ‖ Or â—â—eed presented unto him gifts gold and frankincense and myrrh 12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod they departed into their own countrey another way 13 And when they were departed behold the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream saying Arise and take the young childe and his mother and flee into Egypt and be thou there until I bring thee word for Herod will seek the young childe to destroy him 14 When he arose he took the young childe and his mother by night and departed into Egypt 15 And was there until the death of Herod that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet saying * Hos 1â— â— Out of Egypt have I called my son 16 ¶ Then Herod when he saw that he was mocked of the wise-men was exceeding wroth and sent forth and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem and in all the coasts thereof from two years old and under according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise-men 17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by * Jer. 31.15 Jeremy the prophet saying 18 In Rama was there a voice heard lamentation and weeping and great mourning Rachel weeping for her children and

X. 2 Christ disputeth with the Pharisees touching divorcement 13 blesseth the children that are brought unto him 17 resolveth a rich man how he may inherit â—â—fe everlasting 23 telleth his disciples of the danger of riches 28 promiseth rewards to them that forsake any thing for the gospel 32 foretelleth his death and resurrection 35 biddeth the two ambitious suiters to think rather of suffering with him 45 and restoreth to Bartimeus his sight ANd * Mat. 19.1 he arose from thence and cometh into the coasts of Judea by the farther side of Jordan and the people resort unto him again and as he was wont he taught them again 2 ¶ And the Pharisees came to him and asked him Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife tempting him 3 And he answered said unto them What did Moses command you 4 And they said Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement and to put her away 5 And Jesus answered and said unto them For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept 6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female 7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife 8 And they twain shall be one flesh so then they are no more twain but one flesh 9 What therefore God hath joyned together let no man put asunder 10 And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter 11 And he said unto them * Mat. 5.32 19.9 Whosoever shall put away his wife and marry another committeth adultery against her 12 And if a woman shall put away her husband and be married to another she committeth adultery 13 ¶ * Mat. 19.13 And they brought young children to him that he should touch them and his disciples rebuked those that brought them 14 But when Jesus saw it he was much displeased and said unto them Suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not for of such is the kingdom of God 15 Verily I say unto you Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little childe he shall not enter therein 16 And he took them up in his arms put his hands upon them and blessed them 17 ¶ * Mat. 19.15 And when he was gone forth into the way there came one running and kneeled to him and asked him Good Master what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life 18 And Jesus said unto him Why callest thou me good there is none good but one that is God 19 Thou knowest the commandments Do not commit adultery Do not kill Do not steal Do not bear false witness Defraud not Honour thy father and mother 20 And he answered and said unto him Master all these have I observed from my youth 21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him and said unto him One thing thou lackest go thy way sell whatsoever thou hast and give to the poor and thou shalt have treasure in heaven and come take up the cross and follow me 22 And he was sad at that saying and went away grieved for he had great possessions 23 ¶ And Jesus looked round about and saith unto his disciples How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 24 And the disciples were astonished at his words But Jesus answereth again and saith unto them Children how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle then for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God 26 And they were astonished out of measure saying among themselves Who then can be saved 27 And Jesus looking upon them saith With men it is impossible but not with God for with God all things are possible 28 ¶ * Mat. 19.27 Then Peter began to say unto him Lo we have left all and have followed thee 29 And Jesus answered and said Verily I say unto you There is no man that hath left house or brethren or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands for my sake and the gospels 30 But he shall receive an hundred-sold now in this time houses and brethren and sisters and mothers and children and lands with persecutions and in the world to come eternal life 31 * Mat. 19.30 But many that are first shall be last and the last first 32 ¶ * Mat. 20.17 And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem and Jesus went before them and they were amazed and as they followed they were afraid And he took again the twelve and began to tell them what things should happen unto him 33 Saying Behold we go up to Jerusalem and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests and unto the scribes and they shall condemn him to death and shall deliver him to the Gentiles 34 And they shall mock him and shall scourge him and shall spit upon him and shall kill him and the third day he shall rise again 35 ¶ * Mat. 20 2â— And James and John the sons of Zebedee come unto him saying Master we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire 36 And he said unto them What would ye that I should do for you 37 They said unto him Grant unto us that we may sit one on thy right hand and the other on thy left hand in thy glory 38 But Jesus said unto them Ye know not
him his disciples and saith unto them Verily I say unto you that this poor widow hath cast more in then all they which have cast into the treasury 44 For all they did cast in of their abundance but she of her want did cast in all that she had even all her living CHAP. XIII 1 Christ foretelleth the destruction of the temple 9 the persecutions for the gospel 10 that the gospel must be preached to all nations 14 that great calamities shall happen to the Jews 24 and the manner of his coming to judgement 32 The hour whereof being known to none every man is to watch and pray that we be not found unprovided when he cometh to eath one particularly by death ANd * Mat. 24. ◠as he went out of the temple one of his disciples saith unto him Master see what manner of stones and what buildings are hero 2 And Jesus answering said unto him Seest thou these great buildings there shall not be left one stone upon another that shall not be thrown down 3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately 4 * Mat. 24.3 Tell us when shall these things be and what shall be the signe when all these things shall be fulfilled 5 And Jesus answering them began to say Take heed lest any man deceive you 6 For many shall come in my name saying I am Christ and shall deceive many 7 And when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars be ye not troubled for such things must needs be but the end shall not be yet 8 For nation shall rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom and there shall be earth-quakes in divers places and there shall be famines and troubles these are the beginnings of ‖ The word in the original importeth the pains of a woman in travail sorrows 9 ¶ But take heed to your selves for they shall deliver you up to councils and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten and ye shall be brought before rulers kings for my sake for a testimony against them 10 And the gospel must first be published among all nations 11 * Mat. 10.19 But when they shall lead you and deliver you up take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak neither do ye premeditate but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour that speak ye for it is not ye that speak but the holy Ghost 12 Now the brother shall betray the brother to death and the father the son and children shall rise up against their parents and shall cause them to be put to death 13 And ye shall be hated of all men for my names sake but he that shall endure unto the end the same shall be saved 14 ¶ * Mat. 24.15 But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation spoken of by Damel the prophet standing where it ought not let him that readeth understand then let them that be in Judea flee to the mountains 15 And let him that is on the house-top not go down into the house neither enter therein to take any thing out of his house 16 And let him that is in the field not turn back again for to take up his garment 17 But wo to them that are with childe and to them that give suck in those days 18 And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter 19 For in those days shall be affliction such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time neither shall be 20 And except that the Lord had shortned those days no flesh should be saved but for the elects sake whom he hath chosen he hath shortned the days 21 * Mat. 24.23 And then if any man shall say to you Lo here is Christ or lo he is there beleeve him not 22 For false Christs and false prophets shall rise and shall shew signs and wonders to seduce if it were possible even the elect 23 But take ye heed behold I have foretold you all things 24 ¶ * Mat. 24.29 But in those days after that tribulation the sun shall be darkned and the moon shall not give her sight 25 And the stars of heaven shall fall and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken 26 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory 27 And then shall he send his angels and shall gather together his elect from the four winds from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven 28 Now learn a parable of the fig-tree When her branch is yet tender and putteth sorth leaves ye know that summer is near 29 So ye in like manner When ye shall see these things come to pass know that it is nigh even at the doors 30 Verily I say unto you that this generation shall not pass till all these things be done 31 Heaven and earth shall pass away but my words shall not pass away 32 ¶ But of that day and that hour knoweth no man no not the angels which are in heaven neither the Son but the Father 33 * Mat. 24.42 Take ye heed watch and pray for ye know not when the time is 34 For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey who lest his house and gave authority to his servants and to every man his work and commanded the porter to watch 35 Watch ye therefore for ye know not when the master of the house cometh at even or at midnight or at the cock-crowing or in the morning 36 Lest coming suddenly he finde you sleeping 37 And what I say unto you I say unto all Watch. XIV 1 A conspiracy against Christ 3 Precious ointment is poured on his head by a woman 10 Judas selleth his Master for money 12 Christ himself foretelieth how he shall be betrared of one of his disciples 22 after the pass-over prepared and eaten instituteth his supper 26 declareth aforehand the flight of all his disciples and Peters denial 43 Judas betrayeth him with a kiss 46 He is apprehended in the garden 55 falsly accused and impiously condemned of the Jews council 65 shamefully abused by them 66 and thrice denied of Peter AFter * Mat. 26.2 two days was the feast of the pass-over and of unleavened bread and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft and put him to death 2 But they said Not on the feast day lest there be an uproar of the people 3 ¶ * Mat. 26.6 And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper as he sat at meat there came a woman having an alabaster-box of ointment of ‖ Or part nard or liquid nard spikenard very precious and she brake the box and poured it on his head 4 And there were some that had indignation within themselves and said Why was this waste of the
turn again to thee saying I repent thou shalt forgive him 5 And the apostles said unto the Lord Increase our faith 6 * Matth. 1â— â—0 And the Lord said If ye had faith as a grain of mustard-seed ye might say unto this sycamine-tree Be thou plucked up by the root and be thou planted in the sea and it should obey you 7 But which of you having a servant plowing or feeding cattle will lay unto him by and by when he is come from the field Go and sit down to meat 8 And will not rather say unto him Make ready wherewith I may sup and gird thy self and serve me till I have eaten and drunken and afterward thou shalt eat and drink 9 Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him I trow not 10 So likewise ye when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you say We are unprofitable servants we have done that which was our duty to do 11 ¶ And it came to pass as he went to Jerusalem that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee 12 And as he entred into a certain village there met him ten men that were lepers which stood afar off 13 And they lifted up their voices and said Jesus Master have mercy on us 14 And when he saw them he said unto them * Levit 14.2 Go shew your selves unto the priests And it came to pass that as they went they were cleansed 15 And one of them when he saw that he was healed turned back and with a loud voice glorified God 16 And fell down on his face at his feet giving him thanks and he was a Samaritan 17 And Jesus answering said Were there not ten cleansed but where are the nine 18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God save this stranger 19 And he said unto him Arise go thy way thy faith hath made thee whole 20 ¶ And when he was demanded of the Pharisees when the kingdom of God should come he answered them and said The kingdom of God cometh not ‖ Or with outward soew with observation 21 Neither shall they say Lo here or lo there for behold the kingdom of God is ‖ Or among you within you 22 And he said unto his disciples The days will come when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man and ye shall not see it 23 * Matth. 24.23 And they shall say to you See here or see there go not after them nor follow them 24 For as the lightning that lightneth out of the one part under heaven shineth unto the other part under heaven so shall also the Son of man be in his day 25 But first must he suffer many things and be rejected of this generation 26 * Gen. 7. And as it was in the days of Noe so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man 27 They did eat they drank they married wives they were given in marriage until the day that Noe entred into the ark and the floud came and destroyed them all 28 * Gen. 19. Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot they did eat they drank they bought they sold they planted they builded 29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all 30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed 31 In that day he which shall be upon the house-top and his stull in the house let him not come down to take it away and he that is in the field let him likewise not return back 32 * Gen. 19. â—6 Remember Lots wife 33 * Matth. 16.25 Whosoever shall seek to save his lise shall lose it and whosoever shall lofe his life shall preserve it 34 * Matth. 24.40 I tell you in that night there shall be two men in one bed the one shall be taken and the other shall be left 35 Two women shall be grinding together the one shall be taken and the other left 36 ‖ This 35 verse is wanting in most of the Greek Copies Two men shall be in the field the one shall be taken and the other left 37 And they answered and said unto him * Matth. 24.28 Where Lord And he said unto them Wheresoever the body is thither will the eagles be gathered together CHAP. XVIII 3 Of the importunate widow 9 Of the Pharisee and the publican 15 Children brought to Christ 18 A ruler that would follow Christ but is bindred by his riches 28 The reward of them that leave all for his sake 31 He foresheweth â—is death 35 and restoreth a blinde man to his sight ANd he spake a parable unto them to this end that men onght * 1 Thes 5.17 always to pray and not to saint 2 Saying There was in a city a judge which feared not God neither regarded man 3 And there was a widow in that city and she came unto him saying Avenge me of mine adversary 4 And he would not for a while but afterward he said within himself Though I fear not God nor regard man 5 Yet because this widow troubleth me I will avenge her lest by her continual coming the weary me 6 And the Lord said Hear what the unjust judge saith 7 And shall not God avenge his own elect which cry day and night unto him though he bear long with them 8 I tell you that he will avenge them speedily Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh shall he finde faith on the earth 9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves ‖ Or as being righteous that they were righteous and despised others 10 Two men went up into the temple to pray the one a Pharisee and the other a publican 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself God I thank thee that I am not as other men are extortioners unjust adulterers or even as this publican 12 I fast twice in the week I give tithes of all that I possess 13 And the publican standing afar off would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven but smote upon his breast saying God be merciful to me a sinner 14 I tell you this man went down to his house justified rather then the other * Matth. 23.12 for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted 15 And they brought unto him also infants that he would touch them but when his disciples saw it they rebuked them 16 But Jesus called them unto him and said Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not for of such is the kingdom of God 17 Verily I say unto you Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little childe shall in no wise enter therein 18 * Matth. 19. â—â— And a certain ruler
priest that same year said unto them Ye know nothing at all 50 * Chap. 18.14 Nor consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people and that the whole nation perish not 51 And this spake he not of himself but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation 52 And not for that nation onely but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad 53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death 54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews but went thence unto a countrey near to the wilderness into a city called Ephraim and there continued with his disciples 55 ¶ And the Jews pass-over was nigh at hand and many went out of the countrey up to Jerusalem before the pass-over to purifie themselves 56 Then sought they for Jesus and spake among themselves as they stood in the temple What think ye that he will not come to the feast 57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment that if any man knew where he were he should shew it that they might take him CHAP. XII 1 Jesus excuseth Mary anointing his feet 9 The people flock to see Lazarus 10 The hiâ—h priests consult to kill him 12 Christ rideth into Jerusalem 20 Greeks desire to see Jesus 23 He foretelleth his death 37 The Jews are generally blinded 42 yet many chief rulers beleeve but do not consess him 44 therefore Jesus calleth earnestly for confession of faith THen Jesus six days before the pass-over came to Bethany where Lazarus was which had been dead whom he raised from the dead 2 There they made him a supper and Martha served but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him 3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard very costly and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feâ—t with her hair and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment 4 Then saith one of his disciples Judas Iscariot Simons son which should betray him 5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence and given to the poor 6 This he said not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief and * Chap. 13.29 had the bag and bare what was put therein 7 Then said Jesus Let her alone against the day of my burying hath she kept this 8 For the poor always ye have with you but me ye have not always 9 Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there and they came not for Jesus sake onely but that they might see Lazarus also whom he had raised from the dead 10 ¶ But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death 11 Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away and beleeved on Jesus 12 ¶ * Mat. 21.8 On the next day much people that were come to the feast when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem 13 Took branches of palm-trees and went forth to meet him and cried Hosanna blessed is the king of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. 14 And Jesus when he had found a young ass sat thereon as it is written 15 * Zech. 9.9 Fear not daughter of Sion behold thy King cometh sitting on an asses colt 16 These things understood not his disciples at the first but when Jesus was glorified then remembred they that these things were written of him and that they had done these things unto him 17 The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave and raised him from the dead bare record 18 For this cause the people also met him for that they heard that he had done this miracle 19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing behold the world is gone after him 20 ¶ And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast 21 The same came therefore to Philip which was of Bethsaida of Galilee and desired him saying Sir we would see Jesus 22 Philip cometh and telleth Andrew and again Andrew and Philip told Jesus 23 ¶ And Jesus answered them saying The hour is come that the Son of man should be glorified 24 Verily verily I say unto you Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die it abideth alone but if it die it bringeth forth much fruit 25 * Mat. 10 39. He that loveth his life shall lose it and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal 26 It any man serve me let him follow me and where I am there shall also my servant be if any man serve me him will my Father honour 27 Now is my soul troubled and what shall I say Father save me from this hour but for this cause came I unto this hour 28 Father glorifie thy name Then came there a voice from heaven saying I have both glorified it and will glorifie it again 29 The people therefore that stood by and heard it said that it thundred others said An angel spake to him 30 Jesus answered and said This voice came not because of me but for your sakes 31 Now is the judgement of this world now shall the prince of this world be cast out 32 And I if I be lifted up from the earth will draw all men unto me 33 This he said signifying what death he should die 34 The people answered him * Pla. 110.4 We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever and how sayest thou The Son of man must be lift up who is this Son of man 35 Then Jesus said unto them Yet a little while is the light with you walk while ye have the light lest darkness come upon you for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth 36 While ye have light beleeve in the light that ye may be the children of light These things spake Jesus and departed and did hide himself from them 37 ¶ But though he had done so many miracles before them yet they beleeved not on him 38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled which he spake * Is 53.1 Rom. 10.19 Lord who hath beleeved our report and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed 39 Therefore they could not beleeve because that Esaias said again 40 * Mat. 13.14 He hath blinded their eyes and hardned their heart that they should not see with their eyes nor understand with their heart and be converted and I should heal them 41 These things said Esaias when he saw his glory spake of him 42 ¶ Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many beleeved on him but because of the Pharisees they did not consess him lest they should be put out of the synagogue 43 * Chap. 5.44 For they loved

II. 1 We ought to be obedient to Christ Jesus 5 and that because he vouchsafed to take our nature upon him 14 as it was necessary THerefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard lest at any time we should †Gr. run out as seeking vessels let them slip 2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward 3 How shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him 4 God also bearing them witness both with signs and wonders and with dâ—vers miracles and ‖ Or distribution gifts of the holy Ghost according to his own will 5 For unto the angles hath he not put in subjection the world to come whereof we speak 6 But one in a certain place testified saying * Psal 8.4 What is man that thou art mindful of him or the son of man that thou visitest him 7 Thou madest him ‖ Or a little while inferiour to a little lower then the angels thou crownedst him with glory honour didst set him over the works of thy hands 8 * 1 Cor. 15.27 Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet For in that he put all in subjection under him he left nothing that is not put under him But now we see not yet all things put under him 9 But we see Jesus who was made a little lower then the angels ‖ Or by for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honour that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man 10 For it became him for whom are all things and by whom are all things in bringing many sons unto glory to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings 11 For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren 12 Saying * Psal 22.22 I will declare thy name unto my brethren in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee 13 And again * Psal 18.2 I will put my trust in him And again * Isa 8.18 Behold I and the children which God hath given me 14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and bloud he also himself likewise took part of the same that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death that is the devil 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their life-time subject to bondage 16 For verily †Gr. he taketh not hold of angels but of the seed of Abraham he taketh hold he took not on him the nature of angels but he took on him the seed of Abraham 17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God to make reconciliation for the sins of the people 18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted he is able to succour them that are tempted CHAP. III. 1 Christ is more worthy then Moses 7 therefore if we beleeve not in him we shall be more worthy punishment then hard-hearted Israel WHerefore holy brethren partakers of the heavenly calling consider the Apostle and high Priest of our profession Christ Jesus 2 Who was faithful to him that †Gr. made 1 Sam. 12.6 appointed him as also * Num. 12.7 Moses was faithful in all his house 3 For this man was counted worthy of more glory then Moses in as much as he who hath builded the house hath more honour then the house 4 For every house is builded by some man but he that built all things is God 5 And Moses verily was faithful in all his house as a servant for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after 6 But Christ as a Son over his own house whose house are we if we hold fast the confidence the rejoycing of the hope firm unto the end 7 Wherefore as the holy Ghost saith * Psal 95.7 Chap. 4.7 To day if ye will hear his voice 8 Harden not your hearts as in the provocation in the day of temptation in the wilderness 9 When your fathers tempted me proved me and saw my works fourty years 10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation and said They do alway err in their heart and they have not known my ways 11 So I sware in my wrath †Gr. If they shall enter They shall not enter into my rest 12 Take heed brethren lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God 13 But exhort one another daily while it is called To day lest any of you be hardned through the deceitfulness of sin 14 For we are made partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence sted fast unto the end 15 While it is said To day if ye will hear his voice harden not your hearts as in the provocation 16 For some when they had heard did provoke howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses 17 But with whom was he grieved fourty years was it not with them that had sinned * Num. 14.29 c. whose carcases fell in the wilderness 18 And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest but to them that beleeved not 19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief CHAP. IV. 1 The rest of Christians is attained by faith 12 The power of Gods word 14 By our high priest Jesus the Son of God subject to infirmities but not sin 16 we must and may go boldly to the throne of grace LEt us therefore fear lest a promise being left us of entring into his rest any of you should seem to come short of it 2 For unto us was the gospel preached as well as unto them but †Gr. the word of hearing the word preached did not profit them ‖ Or because they were not united by faith to not being mixed with faith in them that heard it 3 For we which have beleeved do enter into rest as he said * Psal 95.11 As I have sworn in my wrath If they shall enter into my rest although the works were finished from the foundation of the world 4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise * Gen. 2 2. And God did rest the seventh day from all his works 5 And in this place again If they shall enter into my rest 6
seven golden candlesticks The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches CHAP. II. What is commanded to be written to the angels that is the ministers of the churches of 1 Ephesus 8 Smyrna 12 Pergamos 18 Thyatira and what is commended or found wanting in them UNto the angel of the church of Ephesus write These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks 2 I know thy works and thy labour and thy patience and how thou canst not bear them which are evil and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles and are not and hast found them liars 3 And hast born and hast patience and for my names sake hast laboured and hast not fainted 4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee because thou hast left thy first love 5 Remember therefore from whence thou art faln and repent and do the first works or else I will come unto thee quickly and will remove thy candlestick out of his place except thou repent 6 But this thou hast that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans which I also hate 7 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life which is in the midst of the paradise of God 8 And unto the Angel of the church in Smyrna write These things saith the first and the last which was dead and is alive 9 I know thy works and tribulation and poverty but thou art rich and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews and are not but are the synagogue of Satan 10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer behold the devil shall cast some of you into prison that ye may be tried and ye shall have tribulation ten days be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life 11 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death 12 And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges 13 I know thy works and where thou dwellest even where Satans seat is and thou holdest fast my name and hast not denied my faith even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr who was slain among you where Satan dwelleth 14 But I have a few things against thee because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of * Num. 25. Balaam who taught Balac to cast a stumbling-block before the children of Israel to eat things sacrificed unto idols and to commit fornication 15 So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans which thing I hate 16 Repent or else I will come unto thee quickly and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth 17 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna and will give him a white stone and in the stone a new name written which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it 18 And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write These things saith the Son of God who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire and his feet are like fine brass 19 I know thy works and charity and service and faith and thy patience and thy works and the last to be more then the first 20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee because thou sufferest that woman * â— Kin. 16. â—1 Jezabel which calleth her self a prophetess to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication and to eat things sacrificed unto idols 21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication and she repented not 22 Behold I will cast her into a bed and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation except they repent of their deeds 23 And I will kill her children with death and all the churches shall know that * Ps 7.9 Jer. 11.20 17.10 I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts and I will give unto every one of you according to your works 24 But unto you I say and unto the rest in Thyatira As many as have not this doctrine and which have not known the depths of Satan as they speak I will put upon you none other burden 25 But that which ye have already hold fast till I come 26 And he that overcometh and keepeth my works unto the end to him will I give power over the nations 27 * Psal 2.6 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers even as I received of my Father 28 And I will give him the morning star 29 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches CHAP. III. 2 The angel of the church of Sardis is reproved 3 exhorted to repent and threatned if he do not repent 8 The angel of the church of Philadelphia 10 is approved for his dilâ—â—enâ—e and patience 15 The angel of Laodicea is rebuzed for being neither hot nor cold 19 and admonished to be more zealous 20 Christ standeth at the door and knocketh ANd unto the angel of the church in Sardis write These things saith he that hath the seven spirits of God and the seven stars I know thy works that thou hast a name that thou livest and art dead 2 Be watchful and strengthen the things which remain that are ready to die for I have not found thy works perfect before God 3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard and hold fast and repent * 1 Thes 5. â— 2 Pet. 3.10 Ch 16.15 If therefore thou shalt not watch I will come on thee as a thief thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee 4 Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments and they shall walk with me in white for they are worthy 5 He that overcometh the same shall be clothed in white raiment and I will not blot out his name out of the * Phil. 4.3 Ch. 20.12 book of life but I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels 6 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches 7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write These things saith he that is holy he that is true he that hath * Is 2â— 22 the key of David he that openeth and no man shutteth and shutteth no man openeth 8 I know thy works behold I have set before thee an open door and no man can shut it for thou hast a little strength and hast kept my word and hast not denied
