we_o can_v lessen_v by_o this_o our_o sorrow_n the_o most_o grievous_a and_o exessive_a sorrow_n that_o our_o saviour_n suffer_v for_o we_o yet_o this_o our_o compassion_n be_v most_o grateful_a to_o he_o whereby_o we_o make_v his_o dolour_n we_o and_o apply_v his_o suffering_n unto_o ourselves_o wherefore_o the_o apostle_n have_v say_v very_o right_o we_o be_v coheire_n of_o christ_n yet_o if_o we_o suffer_v with_o he_o that_o we_o may_v be_v also_o glorify_v with_o he_o for_o he_o that_o will_v not_o be_v a_o partaker_n with_o christ_n in_o his_o suffering_n can_v be_v a_o partaker_n with_o he_o in_o his_o kingdom_n there_o be_v two_o thing_n which_o be_v most_o available_a to_o provoke_v this_o commiseration_n first_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o person_n that_o be_v to_o say_v his_o nobility_n his_o goodness_n his_o piety_n towards_o man_n and_o such_o other_o thing_n which_o do_v aggravate_v the_o indignity_n of_o his_o inflict_v misery_n second_o the_o cruelty_n and_o immanity_n of_o his_o torment_n if_o therefore_o we_o desire_v to_o feeâ—e_v in_o our_o heart_n this_o commiseration_n we_o must_v consider_v in_o every_o article_n first_o who_o it_o be_v that_o suffer_v as_o first_o that_o it_o be_v god_n who_o with_o his_o majesty_n fill_v heaven_n and_o earth_n second_o a_o most_o honourable_a man_n descend_v of_o the_o house_n of_o david_n and_o conceive_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o the_o womb_n of_o the_o virgin_n three_o one_o most_o learned_a in_o his_o understanding_n and_o most_o holy_a in_o his_o will_n who_o by_o no_o error_n or_o sin_n do_v ever_o offend_v either_o god_n or_o man_n four_o most_o grave_a and_o sober_a in_o his_o conversation_n be_v never_o see_v to_o laugh_v but_o often_o to_o weep_v and_o that_o for_o our_o sin_n fift_o more_o beautiful_a in_o his_o body_n then_o all_o the_o son_n of_o man_n and_o of_o a_o more_o tender_a and_o delicate_a complexion_n second_o we_o must_v set_v before_o our_o eye_n the_o greatness_n of_o his_o torment_n and_o with_o what_o particular_a pain_n every_o member_n be_v afflict_v consider_v first_o that_o all_o the_o sense_n of_o his_o body_n and_o all_o the_o power_n of_o his_o soul_n sustain_v their_o proper_a and_o peculiar_a torture_n second_o that_o his_o â—_z be_v most_o grievous_a both_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o most_o tender_a constitution_n of_o his_o body_n and_o also_o because_o he_o want_v all_o interior_a comfort_n to_o endure_v the_o same_o certain_o it_o be_v the_o undoubted_a opinion_n of_o all_o divine_n that_o never_o any_o creature_n endure_v such_o pain_n and_o torment_n as_o our_o bless_a saviour_n do_v if_o we_o see_v a_o wicked_a man_n suffer_v such_o punishment_n as_o he_o have_v most_o just_o deserve_v we_o can_v but_o be_v move_v to_o compassion_n and_o grief_n and_o if_o we_o see_v but_o a_o dog_n or_o a_o ass_n cruel_o whip_v or_o beat_v we_o be_v present_o touch_v with_o commiseration_n ought_v we_o not_o then_o to_o condole_v with_o the_o son_n of_o god_n suffer_v so_o unspeakable_a torture_n and_o that_o for_o our_o sake_n the_o second_o affection_n be_v compunction_n compunction_n compunction_n or_o sorrow_n for_o our_o sin_n when_o we_o be_v induce_v to_o a_o horror_n and_o detestation_n of_o our_o sin_n by_o the_o remembrance_n of_o our_o saviour_n passion_n which_o may_v easy_o be_v do_v if_o we_o ponder_v what_o the_o malice_n of_o sin_n be_v and_o what_o torment_v it_o have_v draw_v upon_o christ_n our_o saviour_n as_o god_n be_v infinite_a so_o the_o malice_n of_o sin_n which_o be_v commit_v against_o god_n be_v also_o infinite_a and_o this_o malice_n in_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n which_o ought_v not_o to_o be_v violate_v can_v not_o by_o any_o satisfaction_n be_v take_v away_o but_o by_o that_o which_o be_v infinite_a wherefore_o either_o a_o infinite_a pain_n be_v to_o be_v endure_v which_o no_o finite_a creature_n can_v endure_v or_o for_o a_o infinite_a time_n which_o the_o damn_a in_o hell_n endure_v or_o by_o a_o infinite_a person_n which_o be_v god_n himself_o hence_o let_v we_o proceed_v and_o consider_v what_o it_o be_v that_o draw_v god_n from_o heaven_n to_o earth_n and_o induce_v he_o to_o undergo_v his_o passion_n which_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o our_o sin_n for_o if_o man_n have_v never_o sin_v god_n have_v never_o be_v incarnate_v nâ—uer_o suffer_v never_o die_v wherefore_o like_v as_o for_o the_o sinner_n his_o sin_n prepare_v a_o place_n in_o hell_n &_o for_o the_o thief_n his_o theft_n prepare_v his_o punishment_n so_o for_o our_o bless_a saviour_n our_o grievous_a sin_n have_v procure_v a_o necessity_n of_o suffer_a death_n the_o malice_n therefore_o of_o sin_n be_v above_o all_o thing_n to_o be_v detest_v which_o cause_v even_o our_o lord_n god_n himself_o to_o be_v crucify_v but_o lest_o thou_o shall_v imagine_v perhaps_o that_o the_o grievousnesse_n of_o sin_n be_v hereby_o extenuate_v because_o christ_n do_v not_o suffer_v pulpit_n as_o it_o be_v of_o the_o cross_n he_o teach_v all_o kind_n of_o virtue_n yea_o and_o teach_v they_o most_o perfect_o both_o for_o that_o he_o be_v destitute_a of_o all_o interior_a comfort_n always_o abhor_v beyond_o measure_n &_o also_o of_o the_o sin_n of_o all_o mankind_n which_o he_o take_v upon_o he_o in_o the_o garden_n and_o clothe_v himself_o therewith_o as_o with_o a_o garment_n weave_v of_o all_o kind_n of_o filthiness_n with_o which_o in_o the_o person_n of_o all_o sinner_n he_o must_v suffer_v the_o severity_n of_o god_n the_o second_o grief_n be_v loathsomnesse_n be_v weary_a of_o all_o thing_n in_o this_o life_n see_v himself_o forsake_v not_o only_o of_o all_o man_n but_o also_o of_o his_o heavenly_a father_n the_o three_o be_v sorrowfulness_n first_o for_o the_o
