for_o beside_o that_o a_o resurrection_n which_o be_v a_o release_n from_o death_n the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n be_v only_o make_v know_v by_o revelation_n and_o therefore_o they_o who_o say_v that_o word_n will_v tell_v we_o be_v of_o two_o sort_n 1._o his_o mercy_n be_v in_o the_o scripture_n take_v for_o his_o bounty_n and_o from_o this_o it_o be_v that_o all_o his_o creature_n derive_v all_o they_o be_v and_o all_o they_o have_v and_o this_o his_o mercy_n consist_v in_o give_v but_o then_o 2._o his_o mercy_n be_v take_v for_o the_o pardon_n of_o sinful_a man_n and_o this_o his_o mercy_n according_a to_o the_o unbounded_a liberty_n of_o his_o own_o good_a pleasure_n which_o be_v therefore_o evident_a because_o he_o may_v place_v a_o creature_n in_o what_o station_n and_o bestow_v upon_o it_o what_o endowment_n and_o what_o happiness_n he_o please_v so_o far_o as_o a_o creature_n as_o such_o be_v capable_a of_o either_o and_o in_o this_o sense_n all_o creature_n have_v be_v must_v be_v a_o positive_a justice_n that_o be_v it_o be_v unjust_a not_o to_o punish_v he_o or_o otherwise_o he_o who_o have_v a_o just_a power_n of_o punish_v a_o criminal_a may_v upon_o no_o other_o motive_n but_o his_o own_o will_n and_o pleasure_n not_o do_v it_o to_o tell_v we_o therefore_o that_o god_n by_o a_o resurrection_n grant_v a_o release_n from_o death_n the_o punishment_n the_o present_a case_n revelation_n be_v undoubted_o the_o best_a guide_n of_o our_o reason_n for_o reason_n must_v of_o necessity_n be_v guide_v best_a by_o that_o without_o the_o guidance_n of_o which_o reason_n itself_o be_v confess_o blind_a and_o we_o be_v very_o sure_a that_o it_o become_v all_o those_o who_o acknowledge_v the_o scripture_n to_o be_v the_o revelation_n of_o god_n i_o say_v it_o become_v they_o in_o modesty_n and_o deference_n to_o the_o author_n and_o in_o prudence_n for_o their_o own_o more_o certain_a conduct_n rather_o to_o endeavour_v to_o bring_v their_o reason_n to_o comply_v with_o the_o revelation_n than_o to_o bring_v the_o revelation_n to_o comply_v with_o their_o reason_n and_o therefore_o that_o we_o ourselves_o may_v practice_v what_o we_o can_v but_o judge_v to_o be_v best_a in_o the_o practice_n of_o other_o we_o shall_v lay_v the_o groundwork_n of_o all_o that_o be_v to_o follow_v upon_o the_o word_n of_o st._n peter_n in_o the_o four_o of_o the_o act_n and_o the_o twelve_o verse_n neither_o be_v there_o salvation_n in_o any_o other_o for_o there_o be_v no_o other_o name_n under_o heaven_n give_v among_o man_n whereby_o we_o must_v be_v save_v in_o which_o word_n the_o apostle_n and_o he_o too_o at_o that_o time_n fill_v with_o the_o holy-ghost_n as_o appear_v by_o the_o eight_o verse_n do_v express_o tell_v we_o for_o that_o very_a question_n which_o they_o alone_o have_v make_v a_o question_n viz._n whether_o jesus_n christ_n die_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n i_o say_v they_o will_v alter_v it_o into_o another_o question_n neither_o fit_a to_o be_v dispute_v nor_o possible_a to_o be_v determine_v by_o shortsighted_a man_n viz._n what_o god_n can_v do_v and_o what_o god_n can_v do_v whereas_o it_o be_v sufficient_a for_o we_o to_o take_v thing_n as_o we_o find_v they_o and_o if_o we_o find_v that_o thing_n in_o the_o present_a case_n be_v so_o order_v by_o god_n and_o that_o he_o tell_v we_o that_o they_o be_v so_o as_o that_o sinful_a man_n shall_v not_o obtain_v redemption_n but_o only_o by_o the_o merit_n and_o death_n of_o jesus_n christ_n their_o saviour_n i_o say_v if_o god_n tell_v we_o and_o that_o too_o by_o repeat_v declaration_n that_o thing_n in_o the_o present_a case_n be_v so_o order_v we_o ought_v to_o acquiesce_v in_o such_o his_o declaration_n and_o not_o employ_v our_o vanity_n or_o curiosity_n for_o it_o can_v in_o no_o sober_a sense_n be_v call_v our_o reason_n in_o inquire_v whether_o much_o less_o in_o determine_v that_o they_o may_v or_o may_v not_o have_v be_v better_o order_v but_o of_o this_o more_o hereafter_o at_o present_v therefore_o and_o in_o the_o first_o place_n we_o shall_v take_v the_o matter_n of_o fact_n to_o be_v just_a as_o the_o scripture_n have_v in_o most_o plain_a and_o express_v word_n tell_v we_o it_o be_v that_o jesus_n christ_n die_v for_o our_o sin_n that_o he_o die_v to_o save_v sinner_n etc._n etc._n and_o then_o by_o compare_v this_o matter_n of_o fact_n with_o other_o the_o method_n of_o the_o divine_a proceed_n in_o the_o like_a case_n see_v if_o it_o will_v not_o afford_v we_o a_o very_a plausible_a argument_n of_o the_o truth_n lay_v down_o that_o there_o be_v not_o salvation_n in_o any_o other_o now_o if_o we_o carry_v our_o observation_n through_o any_o other_o the_o transaction_n of_o the_o divine_a love_n and_o mercy_n that_o do_v design_n to_o entitle_v man_n to_o the_o same_o salvation_n we_o shall_v find_v that_o god_n do_v never_o make_v use_n of_o extraordinary_a mean_n where_o the_o ordinary_a be_v sufficient_a and_o therefore_o when_o the_o lord_n himself_o appear_v to_o saul_n in_o his_o journey_n to_o damascus_n we_o find_v that_o the_o design_n and_o effect_v of_o that_o vision_n be_v to_o it_o be_v not_o the_o method_n of_o the_o divine_a proceed_n so_o neither_o be_v it_o of_o wisdom_n itself_o to_o let_v the_o measure_n of_o the_o mean_n exceed_v in_o their_o proportion_n to_o the_o design_v end_n and_o in_o any_o case_n whatsoever_o where_o less_o cost_n or_o labour_n be_v sufficient_a there_o common_a prudence_n will_v by_o no_o mean_n allow_v and_o much_o less_o approve_v our_o drudgery_n or_o profuseness_n now_o to_o bring_v what_o we_o have_v say_v to_o our_o present_a purpose_n since_o our_o saviour_n for_o the_o establishment_n of_o the_o gospel-covenant_n do_v and_o which_o upon_o that_o account_n come_v within_o the_o compass_n of_o that_o relaxation_n to_o know_v therefore_o whether_o the_o incarnation_n life_n and_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v necessary_a for_o man_n redemption_n we_o must_v inquire_v what_o have_v become_v of_o sinful_a man_n if_o the_o son_n of_o god_n have_v not_o become_v his_o saviour_n and_o if_o upon_o that_o christian_a religion_n for_o to_o tell_v we_o that_o our_o saviour_n be_v only_o such_o a_o man_n as_o other_o man_n be_v but_o only_o conceive_v in_o a_o different_a and_o therefore_o more_o wonderful_a manner_n to_o tell_v we_o that_o he_o die_v patient_o though_o wrongful_o only_o that_o he_o may_v give_v we_o a_o example_n of_o a_o exact_a patience_n and_o of_o a_o entire_a submission_n to_o god_n providence_n to_o tell_v we_o that_o he_o be_v slay_v a_o sacrifice_n only_o to_o confirm_v the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n but_o that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o design_n in_o man._n for_o the_o scripture_n give_v we_o no_o account_n of_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o the_o breach_n of_o any_o other_o law_n but_o only_o of_o that_o law_n which_o god_n have_v prescribe_v to_o mankind_n and_o therefore_o though_o in_o the_o scripture_n we_o have_v several_a broad_a hint_n of_o the_o fall_n of_o the_o angel_n and_o though_o our_o reason_n tell_v we_o that_o that_o which_o put_v they_o under_o the_o displeasure_n of_o god_n must_v needs_o be_v sin_n in_o the_o general_a yet_o we_o be_v therefore_o ignorant_a what_o their_o sin_n be_v because_o we_o be_v ignorant_a what_o that_o law_n be_v against_o which_o they_o sin_v 2._o we_o take_v notice_n that_o as_o that_o law_n about_o which_o alone_o the_o gospel-forgiveness_n be_v concern_v be_v the_o law_n give_v by_o god_n to_o man_n so_o the_o gospel_n take_v no_o other_o or_o far_a notice_n of_o the_o transgression_n of_o that_o law_n than_o as_o that_o law_n be_v break_v by_o man._n from_o whence_o we_o infer_v in_o the_o 3._o three_o place_n that_o that_o punishment_n which_o the_o law_n threaten_v against_o those_o who_o transgress_v it_o can_v only_o in_o justice_n belong_v to_o those_o to_o who_o the_o law_n be_v give_v and_o direct_v for_o they_o can_v never_o transgress_v a_o law_n who_o have_v no_o law_n assign_v they_o and_o they_o can_v never_o be_v just_o punish_v for_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n who_o can_v never_o transgress_v the_o law_n the_o law_n therefore_o about_o which_o alone_o a_o gospel-forgiveness_n be_v concern_v be_v the_o law_n give_v to_o man_n and_o transgress_v by_o man_n man_n alone_o can_v just_o suffer_v the_o penalty_n of_o such_o transgression_n from_o whence_o we_o infer_v in_o the_o 4._o four_o place_n that_o if_o any_o penalty_n can_v ever_o just_o expiate_v that_o gild_n which_o be_v contract_v by_o the_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n that_o penalty_n that_o must_v make_v such_o expiation_n must_v be_v a_o penalty_n lay_v upon_o know_v that_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o death_n be_v sin_n because_o we_o know_v that_o the_o wage_n of_o sin_n be_v death_n if_o therefore_o as_o we_o have_v already_o see_v the_o sin_n of_o the_o faithful_a be_v take_v away_o by_o the_o expiation_n and_o if_o upon_o their_o resurrection_n they_o obtain_v a_o indefectible_a holiness_n the_o inference_n will_v be_v that_o the_o cause_n certain_a when_o we_o know_v that_o the_o same_o apostle_n do_v acquaint_v we_o not_o only_o that_o our_o body_n which_o be_v sow_o in_o dishonour_n shall_v be_v raise_v in_o glory_n but_o over_o to_o show_v wherein_o the_o happiness_n of_o such_o eternal_a life_n do_v consist_v but_o before_o we_o speak_v to_o that_o i_o shall_v lay_v down_o two_o or_o three_o practical_a consideration_n which_o as_o they_o look_v back_o to_o what_o have_v be_v speak_v already_o so_o will_v be_v no_o improper_a introduction_n to_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v to_o follow_v 1._o and_o first_o we_o shall_v be_v sensible_a of_o and_o grateful_a for_o that_o bless_a provision_n that_o our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n have_v make_v for_o our_o everlasting_a happiness_n and_o security_n and_o this_o we_o shall_v so_o much_o the_o rather_o be_v because_o by_o what_o have_v be_v say_v we_o may_v now_o understand_v that_o such_o provision_n do_v full_o answer_v to_o our_o high_a natural_a desire_n and_o inclination_n for_o our_o anxiety_n for_o our_o own_o welfare_n will_v tell_v we_o that_o among_o all_o the_o several_a appetite_n by_o which_o we_o pursue_v after_o our_o own_o happiness_n our_o desire_n of_o life_n do_v hold_v the_o first_o and_o chief_a place_n with_o we_o and_o the_o reason_n be_v plain_a because_o the_o loss_n of_o life_n must_v needs_o be_v follow_v by_o the_o loss_n of_o all_o other_o enjoyment_n whatsoever_o that_o can_v in_o any_o wise_a conduce_v to_o our_o happiness_n and_o as_o we_o be_v tell_v by_o our_o common_a sense_n that_o our_o grand_a and_o top_v appetite_n be_v that_o of_o life_n so_o we_o be_v tell_v by_o the_o same_o
if_o the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n be_v absolute_o just_a and_o necessary_a then_o how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o god_n do_v in_o his_o counsel_n design_n and_o in_o his_o wisdom_n appoint_v a_o saviour_n in_o order_n to_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n for_o in_o order_n of_o nature_n the_o design_n of_o pardon_n must_v be_v antecedent_n to_o thâ—_n design_n of_o send_v a_o saviour_n and_o therefore_o if_o the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n be_v as_o it_o be_v laâ—_n down_o both_o just_a and_o necessary_a god_n design_n of_o pardon_n go_v counter_a to_o this_o law_n shall_v seem_v to_o be_v unjust_a for_o how_o can_v he_o justâ—_n design_n to_o pardon_v that_o which_o in_o justice_n anâ—_n necessity_n he_o stand_v oblige_v to_o punish_v now_o to_o this_o several_a thing_n may_v be_v answer_v as_o 1._o first_o that_o god_n do_v never_o design_n 〈◊〉_d pardon_n sin_n but_o only_o in_o and_o through_o a_o saviour_n and_o how_o far_o such_o his_o design_n undeâ—_n such_o a_o account_n 〈◊〉_d the_o punishment_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o as_o foâ—_n man_n those_o of_o they_o that_o shall_v be_v save_v aâ—_n last_o in_o consideration_n of_o their_o saviour_n merit_n do_v yet_o in_o this_o world_n suffer_v loss_n anâ—_n cross_n and_o pain_n and_o disease_n and_o death_n all_o which_o be_v undoubted_a punishment_n of_o sinâ—_n and_o for_o the_o rest_n who_o shall_v by_o a_o final_a impenitence_n reject_v the_o benefit_n of_o the_o saviour_n purchase_n beside_o the_o calamity_n which_o they_o suffer_v in_o common_a with_o the_o good_a in_o this_o world_n the_o scripture_n do_v acquaint_v we_o sufficient_o with_o their_o doom_n in_o the_o next_o so_o that_o if_o it_o may_v be_v a_o argument_n that_o punishment_n be_v the_o necessary_a reward_n of_o sin_n because_o all_o sinner_n have_v do_v and_o shall_v suffer_v punishment_n then_o god_n design_v of_o a_o saviour_n for_o mankind_n in_o order_n to_o their_o pardon_n do_v not_o take_v off_o the_o force_n of_o such_o argument_n because_o notwithstanding_o such_o his_o design_n and_o such_o saviour_n no_o sinner_n whatsoever_o do_v or_o ever_o will_v go_v unpunished_a 3._o but_o then_o three_o it_o be_v a_o mistake_n that_o the_o salvation_n of_o man_n from_o punishment_n be_v the_o immediate_a and_o direct_a design_n in_o god_n counsel_n of_o send_v a_o saviour_n for_o as_o we_o shall_v see_v hereafter_o see_v chap._n 12._o the_o business_n of_o our_o saviour_n come_v be_v to_o bring_v back_o mankind_n to_o his_o father_n kingdom_n who_o have_v be_v draw_v into_o a_o revolt_n from_o his_o dominion_n and_o jurisdiction_n by_o the_o solicitation_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o have_v thereby_o put_v a_o slight_a upon_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o king_n of_o all_o the_o world_n and_o so_o in_o some_o sense_n lessen_v the_o extent_n of_o his_o kingdom_n now_o those_o who_o our_o saviour_n shall_v so_o bring_v back_o to_o their_o allegiance_n by_o restore_v they_o to_o their_o lose_a holiness_n shall_v indeed_o be_v save_v but_o then_o their_o salvation_n be_v a_o consequence_n of_o their_o return_n to_o holiness_n and_o so_o be_v not_o proper_o the_o design_n of_o god_n send_v a_o saviour_n but_o the_o consequence_n of_o the_o success_n of_o such_o design_n chap._n ii_o the_o gospel_n hold_v forth_o no_o such_o thing_n as_o a_o absolute_a or_o unconditional_a pardon_n no_o nor_o yet_o a_o arbitrary_a pardon_n the_o next_o and_o second_o proposition_n offer_v to_o be_v make_v good_a in_o order_n to_o our_o main_a design_n be_v this_o that_o the_o gospel_n hold_v out_o no_o such_o thing_n to_o we_o as_o a_o absolute_a forgiveness_n of_o sin_n which_o proposition_n i_o therefore_o lie_v down_o here_o not_o only_o because_o it_o be_v introductive_a to_o some_o thing_n which_o be_v to_o follow_v but_o also_o to_o obviate_v the_o conceit_n of_o those_o man_n who_o think_v they_o do_v sufficient_o wipe_v away_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n in_o reference_n to_o the_o pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n by_o tell_v we_o that_o god_n may_v without_o any_o more_o ado_n pardon_v such_o our_o sin_n by_o his_o free_a grace_n 1._o but_o in_o the_o first_o place_n we_o can_v but_o take_v notice_n that_o what_o god_n may_v do_v and_o what_o he_o have_v declare_v he_o will_v do_v be_v two_o very_a different_a and_o distinct_a thing_n though_o therefore_o it_o be_v suppose_v that_o god_n may_v grant_v we_o a_o absolute_a pardon_n yet_o if_o in_o those_o very_a revelation_n in_o which_o he_o have_v discover_v to_o we_o his_o intention_n of_o pardon_v we_o he_o do_v express_o tell_v we_o that_o he_o will_v not_o do_v so_o it_o will_v be_v proper_a and_o modest_a in_o we_o to_o acquiesce_v in_o what_o he_o so_o tell_v we_o rather_o than_o to_o raise_v in_o our_o imagination_n conceit_a possibility_n which_o do_v direct_o contradict_v such_o his_o declaration_n 2._o but_o second_o he_o who_o bring_v we_o the_o gospel-dispensation_n in_o order_n to_o the_o pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n do_v in_o that_o dispensation_n require_v our_o repentance_n in_o order_n to_o such_o our_o pardon_n now_o if_o repentance_n be_v a_o condition_n of_o the_o pardon_n then_o for_o that_o reason_n alone_o the_o pardon_n can_v be_v absolute_a because_o a_o absolute_a pardon_n be_v a_o inconditional_a pardon_n and_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o the_o same_o pardon_n shall_v be_v a_o conditional_a and_o a_o inconditional_a pardon_n too_o 3._o a_o absolute_a pardon_n of_o sin_n fight_v direct_o against_o all_o that_o we_o have_v say_v under_o our_o last_o head_n concern_v the_o necessary_a justice_n of_o punishment_n and_o therefore_o till_o all_o that_o be_v wipe_v away_o we_o may_v upon_o those_o ground_n deny_v that_o there_o be_v any_o such_o sort_n of_o pardon_n for_o it_o look_v a_o little_a too_o harsh_a and_o that_o too_o to_o natural_a reason_n to_o tell_v we_o that_o god_n will_v be_v reconcile_v to_o the_o enemy_n of_o his_o nature_n and_o that_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o mere_a mercy_n and_o compassion_n and_o that_o in_o order_n to_o his_o be_v so_o he_o will_v throw_v away_o all_o consideration_n of_o his_o justice_n which_o in_o this_o case_n we_o may_v adventure_v to_o call_v his_o natural_a displeasure_n 4._o if_o we_o shall_v suppose_v or_o allow_v such_o a_o thing_n as_o a_o absolute_a forgiveness_n then_o we_o must_v also_o allow_v that_o it_o may_v be_v the_o same_o thing_n whether_o a_o man_n have_v be_v the_o best_a or_o the_o worst_a man_n in_o the_o whole_a world_n for_o a_o absolute_a forgiveness_n in_o the_o reason_n and_o nature_n of_o it_o may_v as_o well_o be_v extend_v to_o the_o one_o as_o to_o the_o other_o for_o let_v what_o reason_n soever_o be_v assign_v why_o it_o may_v not_o and_o that_o very_a reason_n be_v it_o what_o it_o will_v will_v prove_v the_o forgiveness_n not_o to_o be_v absolute_a for_o that_o forgiveness_n can_v be_v so_o that_o be_v limit_v or_o restrain_v by_o any_o reason_n whatsoever_o 5._o a_o absolute_a pardon_n do_v throw_v a_o slur_n upon_o god_n wisdom_n no_o less_o than_o it_o do_v so_o upon_o his_o justice_n for_o the_o law_n be_v his_o against_o which_o we_o have_v transgress_v and_o he_o have_v in_o that_o very_a law_n threaten_v vengeance_n upon_o such_o as_o shall_v transgress_v it_o if_o after_o the_o transgression_n he_o shall_v grant_v a_o absolute_a pardon_n to_o such_o transgression_n he_o will_v by_o such_o a_o pardon_n as_o much_o void_a and_o annul_v the_o law_n as_o he_o have_v by_o his_o threaten_v establish_v and_o confirm_v it_o and_o so_o it_o may_v come_v to_o the_o same_o pass_n as_o to_o the_o final_a event_n whether_o he_o have_v make_v any_o law_n or_o no._n for_o what_o be_v the_o difference_n not_o to_o make_v a_o law_n and_o not_o to_o execute_v it_o and_o therefore_o st._n paul_n pointblank_o to_o our_o purpose_n tell_v we_o in_o the_o three_o to_o the_o roman_n the_o fifth_z and_o six_o verse_n that_o if_o god_n shall_v not_o execute_v vengeance_n he_o will_v not_o only_o be_v unrighteous_a but_o that_o also_o he_o can_v not_o judge_v the_o world_n and_o we_o may_v add_v that_o he_o will_v not_o only_o be_v unrighteous_a but_o consider_v the_o contrariety_n that_o will_v be_v between_o his_o practice_n
with_o god_n will_v yet_o in_o spite_n of_o these_o and_o a_o multitude_n of_o other_o express_a declaration_n to_o the_o contrary_a still_o allow_v our_o saviour_n to_o be_v no_o more_o than_o a_o mere_a man._n now_o it_o be_v free_o confess_v that_o if_o the_o case_n be_v so_o than_o his_o single_a death_n will_v be_v no_o valuable_a compensation_n for_o the_o death_n of_o all_o the_o sinner_n in_o the_o world_n and_o much_o less_o will_v it_o be_v so_o for_o the_o eternal_a death_n of_o such_o sinner_n but_o since_o the_o scripture_n have_v over_o and_o over_o tell_v we_o that_o his_o death_n be_v such_o a_o compensation_n and_o since_o such_o a_o compensation_n can_v not_o exceed_v the_o dignity_n of_o that_o character_n which_o the_o same_o scripture_n have_v give_v we_o of_o he_o though_o their_o way_n of_o reason_v say_v otherwise_o i_o dare_v leave_v it_o to_o any_o sober_a christian_a to_o judge_n whether_o it_o do_v not_o more_o concern_v they_o to_o answer_v what_o the_o scripture_n do_v object_n to_o they_o than_o it_o do_v we_o in_o the_o present_a case_n to_o answer_v what_o they_o do_v object_n to_o we_o for_o if_o the_o fullness_n of_o the_o godhead_n dwell_v in_o our_o saviour_n bodily_a and_o so_o be_v unite_v to_o and_o with_o that_o body_n than_o it_o will_v be_v no_o inconceivable_a strain_n to_o imagine_v that_o the_o infinite_a dignity_n of_o the_o person_n suffer_v must_v needs_o add_v a_o immense_a value_n to_o such_o his_o suffering_n and_o by_o so_o do_v must_v make_v they_o more_o than_o adequate_a to_o the_o gild_n of_o all_o mankind_n and_o though_o this_o of_o itself_o may_v be_v sufficient_a to_o stop_v the_o mouth_n of_o the_o present_a objection_n yet_o if_o we_o do_v but_o recollect_v some_o few_o thing_n that_o have_v be_v speak_v to_o and_o make_v good_a already_o we_o may_v still_o be_v far_o satisfy_v that_o the_o objection_n against_o the_o value_n of_o his_o suffering_n in_o order_n to_o the_o expiation_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n will_v be_v of_o no_o force_n at_o all_o if_o we_o do_v consider_v therefore_o that_o because_o our_o saviour_n take_v on_o he_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n and_o not_o of_o angel_n that_o he_o do_v therefore_o die_v for_o man_n and_o not_o for_o angel_n if_o we_o consider_v that_o the_o fall_v angel_n be_v leave_v without_o any_o hope_n of_o escape_n from_o the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o final_a judgement_n which_o man_n be_v not_o if_o we_o consider_v that_o the_o vengeance_n which_o the_o fall_a angel_n shall_v then_o suffer_v will_v never_o work_v out_o their_o redemption_n or_o forgiveness_n and_o that_o for_o that_o very_a reason_n because_o that_o vengeance_n shall_v be_v eternal_a if_o we_o consider_v that_o neither_o will_v eternal_a vengeance_n work_v out_o the_o salvation_n of_o any_o man_n for_o the_o same_o reason_n and_o last_o if_o we_o consider_v that_o notwithstanding_o the_o utter_a impossibility_n of_o man_n satisfy_v the_o divine_a justice_n by_o his_o own_o punishment_n yet_o we_o be_v assure_v by_o the_o voice_n of_o god_n that_o some_o man_n shall_v obtain_v redemption_n by_o their_o saviour_n blood_n even_o reminion_n of_o death_n of_o one_o and_o though_o it_o be_v but_o a_o temporal_a death_n neither_o yet_o will_v do_v that_o which_o all_o the_o eternal_a death_n in_o the_o world_n can_v not_o do_v that_o be_v it_o will_v reconcile_v sinner_n to_o god_n and_o from_o he_o obtain_v their_o pardon_n and_o that_o upon_o that_o single_a account_n it_o be_v of_o more_o value_n in_o his_o signt_n than_o the_o death_n of_o angel_n and_o man_n and_o that_o therefore_o he_o who_o suffer_v that_o death_n be_v infinite_o great_a than_o both_o by_o which_o we_o may_v also_o understand_v that_o if_o there_o be_v any_o absurdity_n in_o the_o thing_n that_o one_o person_n by_o his_o single_a and_o temporal_a death_n shall_v satisfy_v the_o divine_a justice_n for_o the_o sin_n and_o demerit_n of_o so_o many_o they_o who_o make_v the_o objection_n do_v make_v the_o absurdity_n too_o because_o in_o their_o opinion_n concern_v the_o person_n suffer_v they_o do_v degrade_v he_o below_o that_o infinite_a station_n indeed_o rather_o attempt_v to_o prove_v the_o impossibility_n than_o the_o injustice_n of_o the_o thing_n be_v this_o that_o if_o our_o saviour_n be_v god_n himself_o and_o if_o this_o very_a saviour_n do_v die_v to_o reconcile_v sinner_n to_o god_n than_o it_o will_v follow_v that_o god_n suffer_v to_o reconcile_v sinner_n to_o himself_o which_o at_o at_o the_o very_a first_o sight_n look_v absurd_a 1._o and_o so_o it_o may_v indeed_o to_o humane_a reason_n which_o in_o many_o other_o thing_n but_o more_o especial_o in_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n be_v very_o often_o guide_v by_o this_o very_a case_n as_o far_o as_o our_o circumstance_n will_v allow_v command_v we_o to_o follow_v his_o example_n for_o in_o the_o eighteen_o of_o st._n matthew_n and_o the_o fifteen_o verse_n he_o require_v that_o if_o our_o brother_n offend_v we_o we_o that_o be_v we_o the_o offend_v shall_v go_v and_o tell_v he_o his_o fault_n so_o that_o though_o the_o injury_n be_v do_v not_o by_o we_o god_n thought_n be_v not_o as_o man_n thought_n nor_o his_o way_n as_o man_n way_n and_o therefore_o though_o your_o enemy_n begin_v the_o injury_n yet_o if_o he_o command_v you_o must_v begin_v the_o reconciliation_n and_o if_o god_n do_v not_o only_o begin_v the_o reconciliation_n in_o the_o case_n before_o we_o but_o also_o suffer_v himself_o that_o he_o may_v complete_a it_o all_o the_o be_v not_o impossible_a and_o as_o we_o have_v already_o make_v it_o out_o that_o it_o be_v not_o unjust_a so_o we_o shall_v go_v on_o far_o to_o make_v it_o out_o that_o it_o be_v not_o impossible_a 2._o for_o second_o our_o saviour_n be_v as_o we_o have_v already_o make_v it_o out_o a_o middle_a person_n between_o god_n and_o man_n a_o mediator_n in_o his_o person_n as_o well_o as_o in_o his_o office_n as_o he_o be_v not_o so_o man_n but_o that_o he_o be_v god_n so_o he_o be_v not_o so_o god_n but_o that_o he_o be_v man._n and_o then_o if_o we_o add_v that_o as_o man_n he_o suffer_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n so_o much_o may_v be_v allow_v now_o because_o so_o much_o have_v be_v prove_v already_o and_o indeed_o strict_o and_o close_o speak_v it_o be_v man_n not_o god_n who_o suffer_v in_o the_o person_n of_o our_o saviour_n for_o god_n we_o be_v sure_a be_v utter_o and_o in_o his_o own_o nature_n incapable_a of_o any_o such_o thing_n as_o that_o be_v which_o we_o call_v suffer_v so_o far_o forth_o therefore_o as_o the_o objection_n furmise_n that_o we_o take_v god_n to_o have_v suffer_v so_o far_o the_o objection_n be_v mistake_v and_o lay_v wrong_n but_o yet_o 3._o because_o god_n and_o man_n be_v personal_o

law_n have_v threaten_v and_o which_o we_o have_v deserve_v by_o our_o transgression_n of_o the_o direction_n of_o it_o and_o so_o do_v only_o free_v we_o from_o the_o vindictive_a part_n of_o the_o law_n but_o do_v not_o for_o that_o reason_n entitle_v we_o to_o those_o reward_n which_o the_o law_n promise_v to_o those_o who_o obey_v its_o direction_n now_o it_o be_v a_o very_a different_a thing_n to_o be_v bare_o free_v from_o the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o law_n and_o to_o be_v entitle_v to_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o law_n because_o the_o case_n may_v real_o so_o be_v put_v as_o that_o a_o man_n may_v obtain_v a_o release_n in_o the_o first_o case_n and_o yet_o never_o be_v entitle_v to_o or_o possess_v the_o promise_n in_o the_o last_o and_o in_o all_o case_n let_v they_o be_v what_o they_o will_v yet_o still_o we_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o first_o can_v only_o in_o reason_n nay_o in_o nature_n belong_v to_o those_o who_o have_v transgress_v the_o law_n and_o that_o the_o last_o can_v only_o in_o strictness_n of_o law_n belong_v to_o those_o who_o have_v obey_v the_o law_n and_o therefore_o that_o the_o first_o can_v be_v only_a matter_n of_o favour_n whereas_o the_o last_o may_v be_v matter_n of_o right_n now_o if_o there_o be_v any_o difference_n in_o the_o two_o case_n then_o let_v that_o difference_n be_v lodge_v where_o it_o will_v yet_o we_o be_v from_o thence_o assure_v that_o the_o case_n be_v not_o the_o same_o and_o therefore_o neither_o can_v the_o forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o our_o saviour_n suffering_n the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o law_n in_o our_o stead_n be_v any_o argument_n that_o we_o have_v fulfil_v the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n and_o therefore_o though_o it_o be_v affirm_v by_o several_a learned_a man_n that_o we_o be_v sufficient_o entitle_v to_o eternal_a happiness_n by_o the_o bare_a pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n in_o consideration_n of_o our_o saviour_n suffering_n and_o that_o for_o this_o reason_n because_o when_o we_o be_v treat_v by_o god_n with_o impunity_n we_o be_v at_o the_o same_o time_n treat_v as_o innocent_n and_o that_o he_o who_o be_v treat_v as_o a_o innocent_a by_o god_n himself_o who_o can_v be_v mistake_v in_o the_o case_n must_v therefore_o needs_o be_v so_o yet_o these_o man_n as_o they_o do_v not_o sufficient_o distinguish_v between_o a_o innocent_a and_o a_o saint_n so_o neither_o do_v they_o between_o impunity_n and_o a_o reward_n for_o though_o our_o saviour_n suffering_n be_v meritorious_a of_o a_o reward_n to_o himself_o and_o so_o the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o yet_o they_o be_v only_o expiatory_a to_o we_o and_o that_o too_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n for_o the_o utmost_a design_n the_o natural_a tendency_n and_o the_o only_a business_n of_o a_o expiation_n be_v to_o obtain_v a_o impunity_n for_o such_o who_o have_v deserve_v and_o therefore_o must_v in_o justice_n without_o such_o a_o expiation_n suffer_v punishment_n but_o neither_o scripture_n reason_n or_o justice_n will_v tell_v we_o that_o a_o purchase_n of_o impunity_n from_o the_o vengeance_n due_a to_o the_o transgressor_n of_o the_o law_n can_v be_v a_o purchase_n of_o that_o reward_n that_o be_v only_o due_a to_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n in_o one_o word_n reward_n and_o punishment_n derive_v not_o only_o from_o different_a but_o from_o contrary_a principle_n and_o impunity_n have_v and_o that_o too_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n a_o respect_n or_o relation_n only_o to_o punishment_n but_o none_o at_o all_o to_o reward_v and_o for_o that_o reason_n the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o impunity_n can_v have_v no_o concern_v with_o reward_n neither_o since_o then_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o pardon_n to_o those_o who_o have_v transgress_v the_o law_n it_o be_v absurd_a in_o nature_n and_o reason_n to_o make_v it_o also_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o that_o reward_n which_o as_o it_o suppose_v no_o need_n of_o pardon_n so_o do_v by_o the_o law_n only_o belong_v to_o those_o who_o have_v obey_v the_o law_n so_o that_o a_o expiation_n do_v at_o the_o most_o but_o make_v a_o man_n innocent_a but_o do_v nothing_o to_o make_v he_o a_o saint_n for_o it_o only_o cancel_v his_o neglect_n of_o duty_n but_o do_v not_o do_v that_o duty_n for_o he_o which_o he_o have_v neglect_v by_o all_o which_o it_o appear_v 1._o that_o reward_n do_v in_o propriety_n and_o justice_n only_o belong_v to_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n 2._o that_o punishment_n do_v in_o propriety_n and_o justice_n only_o belong_v to_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n 3._o that_o expiation_n have_v no_o relation_n to_o the_o reward_n of_o obedience_n but_o that_o it_o only_o concern_v that_o punishment_n which_o without_o such_o expiation_n be_v in_o justice_n due_a to_o disobedience_n now_o because_o god_n have_v teach_v we_o not_o only_o that_o our_o sin_n shall_v be_v forgive_v in_o and_o through_o our_o saviour_n but_o that_o also_o in_o and_o through_o the_o same_o saviour_n we_o shall_v obtain_v a_o glorious_a reward_n and_o because_o as_o have_v appear_v in_o general_n reward_n do_v in_o reason_n and_o justice_n as_o proper_o belong_v to_o duty_n and_o obedience_n as_o forgiveness_n do_v to_o expiation_n therefore_o our_o next_o enquiry_n must_v be_v upon_o what_o obedience_n such_o reward_n be_v ground_v for_o we_o be_v very_o sure_a that_o because_o the_o distribution_n of_o such_o reward_n be_v lodge_v in_o god_n hand_n therefore_o the_o reward_n will_v be_v bestow_v just_o and_o because_o we_o be_v sure_a of_o that_o therefore_o we_o be_v far_o assure_v that_o it_o will_v be_v confer_v upon_o duty_n and_o obedience_n and_o indeed_o have_v in_o what_o go_v before_o see_v what_o provision_n god_n have_v make_v for_o the_o fulfil_n the_o vindictive_a part_n of_o the_o law_n in_o order_n to_o the_o possibility_n and_o justice_n of_o man_n salvation_n and_o be_v satisfy_v that_o that_o provision_n which_o he_o have_v make_v for_o that_o purpose_n will_v not_o also_o fulfil_v the_o directive_n part_v of_o the_o law_n it_o must_v be_v our_o next_o business_n to_o inquire_v what_o provision_n he_o have_v make_v for_o the_o fulfil_n of_o such_o directive_n part._n for_o 1._o in_o the_o first_o place_n we_o may_v therefore_o be_v certain_a that_o it_o shall_v be_v fulfil_v one_o way_n or_o other_o because_o the_o law_n be_v god_n be_v in_o itself_o holy_a just_a and_o good_n and_o we_o know_v and_o that_o too_o by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n that_o it_o can_v be_v a_o indifferent_a thing_n to_o the_o ever-wise_a and_o most_o holy_a lawgiver_n whether_o a_o law_n which_o be_v so_o be_v obey_v or_o not_o for_o that_o will_v be_v in_o effect_n to_o cast_v off_o all_o regard_n to_o duty_n holiness_n and_o righteousness_n nay_o which_o be_v yet_o more_o because_o every_o just_a law_n must_v for_o that_o reason_n even_o because_o it_o be_v just_a design_v the_o obedience_n of_o they_o for_o who_o it_o be_v make_v i_o say_v because_o it_o
must_v principal_o and_o in_o the_o first_o place_n design_v their_o obedience_n and_o not_o their_o punishment_n and_o therefore_o not_o their_o forgiveness_n neither_o it_o will_v be_v in_o effect_n to_o contradict_v his_o own_o design_n in_o give_v forth_o his_o law_n for_o the_o design_n of_o his_o law_n be_v the_o holiness_n of_o his_o creature_n result_v from_o their_o conformity_n to_o the_o direction_n of_o such_o law_n if_o he_o shall_v so_o pardon_v their_o neglect_n of_o such_o conformity_n that_o be_v the_o neglect_v of_o their_o obedience_n as_o to_o make_v no_o provision_n for_o such_o obedience_n it_o be_v evident_a that_o by_o so_o do_v he_o will_v have_v no_o more_o regard_n to_o the_o directive_n part_v of_o his_o own_o law_n than_o they_o have_v have_v and_o so_o the_o manner_n of_o forgive_a the_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n will_v unravel_v the_o main_a and_o principal_a design_n of_o make_v the_o law_n but_o we_o know_v very_o well_o that_o such_o a_o way_n of_o proceed_v be_v neither_o agreeable_a to_o wisdom_n nor_o to_o holiness_n and_o therefore_o much_o less_o to_o infinite_a holiness_n and_o wisdom_n and_o therefore_o if_o the_o ever-ho_o and_o wise_a god_n give_v up_o his_o belove_a and_o only_o beget_v son_n to_o death_n for_o the_o accomplish_n the_o vindictive_a part_n of_o the_o law_n and_o if_o for_o the_o same_o purpose_n he_o punish_v all_o mankind_n not_o only_o with_o many_o misery_n in_o this_o world_n but_o also_o with_o death_n in_o their_o go_v out_o of_o it_o i_o say_v if_o he_o do_v all_o this_o which_o yet_o he_o himself_o tell_v we_o be_v his_o strange_a work_n that_o so_o the_o vindictive_a part_n of_o the_o law_n may_v not_o fall_v to_o the_o ground_n shall_v we_o think_v that_o he_o will_v do_v less_o or_o indeed_o shall_v we_o think_v that_o he_o will_v not_o rather_o do_v more_o to_o make_v good_a the_o main_a and_o grand_a and_o i_o may_v add_v the_o more_o natural_a design_n of_o his_o law_n which_o be_v the_o holiness_n of_o his_o creature_n no_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o no_o word_n of_o god_n shall_v return_v empty_a and_o that_o therefore_o his_o more_o solemn_a and_o express_a declaration_n and_o such_o be_v his_o law_n shall_v be_v sure_a to_o have_v their_o accomplishment_n and_o shall_v be_v fulfil_v in_o their_o due_a time_n notwithstanding_o the_o counter-endeavour_n of_o hell_n and_o wickedness_n for_o it_o shall_v not_o be_v in_o the_o power_n of_o any_o enemy_n to_o defeat_v the_o counsel_n or_o evacuate_v the_o main_a design_n of_o that_o law_n which_o proceed_v from_o eternal_a and_o essential_a holiness_n and_o which_o moreover_o be_v back_v with_o omnipotence_n we_o may_v therefore_o very_a well_o be_v satisfy_v that_o god_n have_v make_v provision_n for_o the_o performance_n and_o fulfil_n of_o the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n as_o well_o as_o of_o the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o law_n 2._o and_o we_o may_v be_v satisfy_v in_o the_o second_o place_n that_o such_o his_o provision_n do_v and_o must_v extend_v itself_o to_o man_n to_o who_o the_o law_n be_v give_v for_o it_o will_v be_v unreasonable_a to_o imagine_v the_o design_n of_o any_o law_n to_o be_v fulfil_v when_o such_o law_n be_v not_o obey_v by_o any_o of_o those_o for_o who_o it_o be_v proclaim_v and_o to_o who_o it_o be_v give_v and_o therefore_o because_o the_o law_n be_v give_v to_o man_n and_o require_v obedience_n from_o man_n we_o can_v say_v that_o the_o design_n of_o the_o law_n be_v fulfil_v unless_o man_n do_v obey_v it_o 3._o we_o may_v be_v satisfy_v in_o the_o three_o place_n that_o no_o man_n in_o this_o world_n except_o our_o saviour_n alone_o have_v obey_v the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n from_o the_o day_n of_o adam_n transgression_n to_o this_o very_a day_n and_o we_o may_v be_v satisfy_v moreover_o from_o so_o long_a a_o experience_n of_o the_o thing_n and_o from_o reason_n ground_v upon_o such_o experience_n but_o if_o both_o will_v not_o do_v we_o may_v be_v satisfy_v from_o scripture_n that_o no_o man_n ever_o will_n or_o shall_v pay_v a_o perfect_a obedience_n to_o such_o direction_n nay_o it_o be_v notorious_a that_o no_o man_n do_v so_o because_o we_o know_v that_o every_o man_n in_o this_o world_n be_v under_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n and_o we_o know_v that_o every_o man_n be_v so_o because_o we_o be_v assure_v that_o every_o man_n in_o his_o go_v out_o of_o the_o world_n shall_v undergo_v such_o curse_n that_o be_v that_o every_o man_n shall_v die_v now_o death_n be_v the_o penalty_n express_o assign_v by_o the_o law_n to_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n we_o may_v be_v sure_a that_o those_o who_o be_v not_o only_o liable_a to_o such_o penalty_n but_o who_o shall_v also_o certain_o undergo_v it_o be_v transgressor_n of_o the_o law_n and_o then_o because_o that_o be_v the_o case_n of_o all_o man_n in_o this_o world_n we_o may_v from_o hence_o also_o conclude_v that_o all_o man_n in_o this_o world_n be_v transgressor_n of_o the_o directive_n part_v of_o the_o law_n 4._o we_o may_v be_v satisfy_v in_o the_o four_o place_n both_o because_o it_o be_v the_o object_n of_o each_o good_a christian_n faith_n and_o hope_n in_o particular_a and_o because_o it_o be_v a_o express_a revelation_n of_o the_o will_n of_o god_n in_o general_n that_o some_o man_n shall_v be_v save_v that_o be_v shall_v obtain_v a_o eternal_a happiness_n in_o another_o world_n though_o we_o know_v most_o assure_o that_o all_o man_n do_v transgress_v the_o law_n in_o this_o world_n now_o because_o it_o be_v impossible_a in_o justice_n and_o absurd_a in_o reason_n that_o vengeance_n and_o salvation_n shall_v both_o be_v the_o recompense_n of_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n and_o because_o though_o all_o man_n be_v transgressor_n and_o some_o of_o those_o transgressor_n shall_v be_v pursue_v with_o vengeance_n yet_o other_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o their_o sincere_a though_o imperfect_a obedience_n shall_v be_v reward_v with_o salvation_n therefore_o we_o do_v infer_v in_o the_o 5._o five_o place_n that_o those_o who_o shall_v be_v so_o reward_v shall_v in_o order_n to_o such_o their_o reward_n be_v then_o entitle_v to_o a_o perfect_a obedience_n when_o such_o reward_n shall_v come_v to_o be_v bestow_v that_o this_o be_v a_o truth_n lay_v down_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n the_o covenant_n by_o which_o alone_a man_n shall_v obtain_v salvation_n that_o reason_n and_o justice_n do_v fall_v in_o with_o such_o covenant_n in_o assert_v and_o maintain_v the_o in_o truth_n and_o reality_n whatever_o it_o be_v call_v a_o transgression_n and_o so_o be_v so_o far_o from_o deserve_v a_o reward_n that_o it_o do_v indeed_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o a_o pardon_n for_o the_o defect_n of_o such_o obedience_n be_v sin_n and_o sin_n mix_v with_o any_o thing_n corrupt_v the_o whole_a and_o make_v it_o unclean_a and_o impure_a and_o we_o know_v that_o nothing_o that_o be_v so_o can_v enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o in_o order_n to_o his_o salvation_n st._n paul_n renounce_v his_o own_o righteousness_n which_o be_v of_o the_o law_n in_o the_o three_o to_o the_o philippian_n and_o the_o nine_o verse_n alas_o the_o very_o best_a of_o we_o in_o this_o world_n have_v our_o fail_n and_o imperfection_n and_o not_o only_o sinful_a weakness_n but_o sinful_a wilfulness_n also_o nay_o our_o very_a righteousness_n be_v but_o filthy_a rag_n and_o then_o we_o may_v be_v satisfy_v that_o we_o shall_v never_o in_o those_o rag_n be_v admit_v to_o the_o marriage-supper_n of_o the_o lamb._n when_o the_o prodigal_a son_n return_v to_o his_o father_n the_o father_n not_o only_o provide_v the_o feast_n but_o the_o robe_n and_o the_o ring_n too_o to_o qualify_v his_o son_n to_o be_v a_o fit_a guest_n for_o such_o a_o feast_n now_o from_o these_o proposition_n so_o lay_v down_o and_o confirm_v it_o may_v seem_v no_o very_a remote_a consequence_n that_o that_o righteousness_n to_o which_o those_o who_o shall_v be_v save_v shall_v be_v entitle_v in_o order_n to_o such_o their_o salvation_n shall_v be_v the_o righteousness_n of_o that_o person_n who_o the_o new_a testament_n set_v forth_o to_o be_v the_o saviour_n of_o mankind_n for_o their_o salvation_n must_v in_o justice_n and_o reason_n depend_v upon_o their_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n otherwise_o such_o salvation_n can_v in_o no_o sense_n be_v true_o
the_o law_n have_v promise_v to_o such_o obedience_n 1._o now_o in_o order_n to_o our_o make_v good_a our_o first_o proposition_n we_o must_v examine_v what_o qualification_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a in_o order_n to_o fit_v any_o one_o to_o make_v such_o purchase_n and_o then_o inquire_v far_o whether_o such_o qualification_n either_o do_v or_o can_v belong_v to_o any_o other_o beside_o our_o saviour_n alone_o 1._o now_o the_o first_o and_o lead_v qualification_n in_o he_o who_o shall_v be_v fit_v for_o the_o purchase_n of_o a_o release_n from_o the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n which_o they_o have_v incur_v who_o transgress_v the_o law_n be_v that_o he_o who_o make_v such_o a_o purchase_n must_v be_v one_o of_o the_o same_o kind_a with_o they_o to_o who_o the_o law_n be_v give_v that_o be_v in_o the_o present_a case_n must_v be_v a_o man._n for_o the_o law_n be_v give_v to_o man_n be_v break_v by_o man_n and_o therefore_o also_o the_o breach_n of_o it_o in_o the_o congruity_n of_o thing_n and_o by_o the_o law_n of_o common_a sense_n and_o justice_n be_v to_o be_v punish_v in_o man._n now_o though_o our_o saviour_n be_v not_o the_o only_a person_n in_o the_o world_n who_o have_v this_o qualification_n for_o every_o man_n beside_o be_v as_o real_a a_o man_n as_o he_o be_v yet_o he_o be_v the_o only_a man_n among_o all_o mankind_n who_o by_o this_o qualification_n be_v fit_v for_o the_o effectual_a enterprise_v and_o bring_v to_o pass_v those_o other_o thing_n which_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a for_o the_o purchase_n of_o the_o release_v speak_v of_o 2._o for_o second_o the_o next_o qualification_n of_o he_o who_o be_v fit_v for_o the_o purchase_n of_o a_o release_n from_o the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n be_v that_o he_o must_v be_v a_o innocent_a man._n he_o be_v to_o be_v a_o lamb_n without_o spot_n or_o blemish_n and_o to_o answer_v to_o the_o paschal_n lamb_n which_o in_o this_o as_o in_o several_a other_o thing_n be_v a_o type_n of_o that_o lamb_n of_o god_n which_o shall_v take_v away_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n for_o he_o who_o be_v qualify_v to_o suffer_v for_o other_o in_o order_n to_o release_v those_o other_o from_o the_o penalty_n of_o sin_n must_v not_o therefore_o be_v a_o sinner_n himself_o because_o if_o he_o be_v so_o than_o he_o must_v by_o the_o law_n of_o justice_n and_o even_o according_a to_o the_o tenor_n of_o that_o law_n which_o assign_v such_o penalty_n suffer_v the_o penalty_n for_o his_o own_o sin_n and_o he_o who_o suffer_v the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n for_o his_o own_o sin_n can_v therefore_o suffer_v the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o at_o least_o in_o the_o present_a case_n he_o can_v because_o the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n upon_o the_o transgression_n of_o it_o be_v the_o loss_n of_o life_n his_o own_o penalty_n exhaust_v the_o whole_a stock_n or_o possibility_n of_o his_o so_o suffer_v for_o he_o who_o have_v but_o one_o life_n and_o no_o man_n have_v more_o can_v pay_v that_o life_n but_o once_o and_o therefore_o if_o he_o lay_v it_o down_o for_o his_o own_o sin_n he_o must_v for_o that_o reason_n have_v nothing_o remain_v to_o lay_v down_o for_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o 3._o he_o who_o be_v due_o qualify_v to_o purchase_v for_o mankind_n a_o release_n from_o the_o penalty_n of_o their_o sin_n must_v be_v a_o man_n who_o life_n be_v of_o more_o value_n than_o the_o life_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n and_o the_o reason_n for_o it_o be_v plain_a and_o obvious_a because_o we_o know_v that_o the_o life_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n can_v make_v no_o such_o purchase_n and_o the_o life_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n can_v therefore_o make_v any_o such_o purchase_n because_o the_o death_n of_o no_o single_a man_n can_v make_v such_o a_o purchase_n for_o himself_o for_o what_o no_o single_a man_n death_n can_v do_v for_o himself_o that_o the_o death_n of_o all_o man_n can_v do_v for_o all_o for_o there_o be_v just_a the_o same_o proportion_n between_o all_o man_n and_o the_o death_n of_o all_o that_o there_o be_v between_o one_o man_n and_o the_o death_n of_o one_o beside_o suppose_v a_o man_n to_o be_v a_o transgressor_n of_o the_o law_n it_o look_v very_o absurd_a to_o affirm_v that_o the_o death_n of_o such_o a_o man_n which_o be_v the_o punishment_n of_o his_o transgression_n can_v be_v the_o purchase_n of_o his_o release_n from_o such_o punishment_n for_o then_o the_o selfsame_a thing_n and_o that_o be_v his_o death_n will_v bear_v a_o quite_o contrary_a character_n for_o it_o will_v be_v both_o the_o wage_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o the_o purchase_n of_o his_o ransom_n that_o be_v it_o will_v be_v the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o his_o freedom_n from_o the_o same_o vengeance_n every_o sinner_n therefore_o against_o the_o law_n must_v be_v a_o sufferer_n under_o the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o law_n and_o that_o law_n which_o adjudge_v those_o who_o transgress_v it_o to_o death_n do_v not_o by_o so_o do_v design_n to_o return_v they_o to_o life_n for_o if_o it_o do_v then_o by_o inflict_v its_o sentence_n it_o must_v design_n to_o revoke_v
