XXIII 1 The age and death of Sarah 3 The purchase of Machpelah 19 where Sarah was buried ANd Sarah was an hundred and seven and twenty years old these were the years of the life of Sarah 2 And Sarah died in Kirjath-arba the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah to weep for her 3 ¶ And Abraham stood up from before his dead and spake unto the sons of Heth saying 4 I am a stranger and a sojourner with you give me a possession of a burying place with you that I may bury my dead out of my sight 5 And the children of Heth answered Abraham saying unto him 6 Hear us my lord thou art †Heb. a prince of God a mighty prince amongst us in the choice of our sepulchres bury thy dead none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulchre but that thou mayest bury thy dead 7 And Abraham stood up and bowed himself to the people of the land even to the children of Heth. 8 And he communed with them saying If it be your minde that I should bury my dead out of my sight hear me and intreat for me to Ephron the son of Zohar 9 That he may give me the cave of Machpelah which he hath which is in the end of his field for †Heb. full money as much money as it is worth he shall give it me for a possession of a burying-place amongst you 10 And Ephron dwelt amongst the children of Heth. Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar. 2 And the LORD appeared unto him and said Go not down into Egypt dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of 3 Sojourn in this land and I will be with thee and will bless thee for unto thee and unto thy seed * Chap. 13.15 15.18 I will give all these countreys and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father 4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven and will give unto thy seed all these countreys and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be * Chap. 12.3 22.18 blessed 5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge my commandments my statutes and my laws 6 ¶ And Isaac dwelt in Gerar. 7 And the men of the place asked him of his wife and he said She in my sister for he feared to say She is my wife lest said he the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah because she was â—air to look upon 8 And it came to pass when he had been there a long time that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window and saw and behold Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife 9 And Abimelech called Isaac and said Behold of a surety she is thy wife and how saidst thou She is my sister And Isaac said unto him Because I said Lest I die for her 10 And Abimelech said What is this thou hast done unto us one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us 11 And Abimelech charged all his people saying He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death 12 Then Isaac sowed in that land and †Heb. found received in the same year an hundred fold and the LORD blessed him 13 And the man waxed great and †Heb. went going went forward and grew until he became very great 14 For he had possession of flocks and possession of herds and great store of ‖ Or husbandry servants And the Philistines envied him 15 For all the wells which his fathers servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father the Philistines had stopped them and filled them with earth 16 And Abimelech said unto Isaac Go from us for thou art much mightier then we 17 ¶ And Isaac departed thence and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar and dwelt there 18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them 19 And Isaacs servants digged in the valley and found there a well of †Heb. livng springing water 20 And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaacs herdmen saying The water is ours and he called the name of the well ‖ That is contention Esek because they strove with him 21 And they digged another well and strove for that also and he called the name of it ‖ That is â—â—tred Sitnah 22 And he removed from thence and digged another well and for that they strove not and he called the name of it ‖ That is room Rehoboth and he said For now the LORD hath made room for us and we shall be fruitful in the land 23 And he went up from thence to Beer-sheba 24 And the LORD appeared unto him the same night and said I am the God of Abraham thy father fear not for I am with thee and will bless thee and multiply thy seed for my servant Abrahams sake 25 And he builded an altar there and called upon the name of the LORD and pitched his tent there there Isaacs servants digged a well 26 ¶ Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar and Ahuzzath one of his friends and Phichol the chief captain of his army 27 And Isaac said unto them Wherefore come ye to me seeing ye hate me and have sent me away from you 28 And they said †Heb. Seeing we saw We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee and we said Let there be now an oath betwixt us even betwixt us and thee and let us make a covenant with thee 29 †Heb. if thou shalt c. Joseph getteth leave of Pharaoh to go to bury him 7 The funeral 15 Joseph comforteth his brethren who craved his pardon 22 His age 23 He seeth the third generation of his sons 24 He prophesieth unto his brethren of their return 25 He taketh an oath of them for his bones 26 He dieth and is chested AND Joseph fell upon his fathers face and wept upon him and kissed him 2 And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father and the physicians embalmed Israel 3 And fourty days were fulfilled for him for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed and the Egyptians †Heb. wept mourned for him threescore and ten days 4 And when the days of his mourning were pact Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh saying If now I have found grace in your eyes speak I pray yon in the ears of Pharaoh saying 5 * Ch. 47.29 My father made me swear saying Lo I die in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan there shalt thou bury me Now therefore let me go up I pray thee and bury my father and I will come again 6 And Pharaoh said Go up and bury thy father according as he made thee swear 7 ¶ And Joseph went up to bury his father and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh the elders of his house and all the elders of the land of Egypt 8 And all the house of Joseph and his brethren and his fathers house onely their little ones and their flocks and their herds they lest in the land of Goshen 9 And there went up with him both chariots and hors-men and it was a very great company 10 And they came to the threshing-floor of Atad which is beyond Jordan and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation and he made a mourning for his father seven days 11 And when the inhabitants of the land the Canaanites saw the mourning in the floor of Atad they said This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians wherefore the name of it was called ‖ That is the mourning of the Egyptians Abel-mizraim which is beyond Jordan 12 And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them 13 For * Act. 7.16 his sons carried him into the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah which Abraham * Ch. 23.16 bought with the field for a possession of a burying-place of Ephron the Hittite before Mamre 14 ¶ And Joseph returned into Egypt he and his brethren and all that went up with him to bury his father after he had buried his father 15 ¶ And when Josephs brethren saw that their father was dead they said Joseph will peradventure hate us and will certainly repute us all the evil which we did unto him 16 And they †Heb. charged sent messengers unto Joseph saying Thy father did command before he died saying 17 So shall ye say unto Joseph Forgive I pray thee now the trespass of thy brethren and their sin for they did unto thee evil And now we pray thee forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father And Joseph wept when they spake unto him 18 And his brethren also went and tell down before his face and they said Behold we be thy servants 19 And Joseph said unto them * Ch. 45.5 Fear not for am I in the place of God 20 But as for you ye thought evil against me but God meant it unto good to bring to pass as it is this day to save much people alive 21 Now therefore fear ye not I will nourish you and your little ones And he comforted them and spake †Heb. to their hearts kindly unto them 22 ¶ And Joseph dwelt in Egypt he and his fathers house and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years 23 And Joseph saw Ephraims children of the third generation * Numb 32.39 the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were †Heb. born brought up upon Josephs knees 24 And Joseph said unto his brethren I die and * Hebr. 11.22 God will surely visit you and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham to Isaac and to Jacob. 25 And * Exod. 13.19 Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel saying God will surely visit you and ye shall carry up my bones from hence 26 So Joseph died being an hundred and ten years old and they embalmed him and he was put in a coffin in Egypt ¶ The second book of Moses called EXODUS CHAP. I. 1 The children of Israel after Josephs death do multiply 8 The more they are oppressed by a new king the more they multiply 15 The godliness of the midwives in saving the men-children alive 22 Pharaoh commandeth the male children to be cast into the river NOw * Gen. 46.8 Ch. 6.14 these are the names of the children of Israel which came into Egypt every man and his houshold came with Jacob. 2 Reuben Simeon Levi and Judah 3 Issachar Zebulun and Beniamin 4 Dan and Naphtali Gad and Ather 5 And all the souls that came out of the †Heb. thigb loyns of Jacob were * Gen. 46.27 Deut 10.22 seventy souls for Joseph was in Egypt already 6 And Joseph died and all his brethren and all that generation 7 ¶ * Act. 7.17 And the children of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly and multiplyed and waxed exceeding mighty and the land was filled with them 8 Now there arose up a new king over Egypt which knew not Joseph 9 And he said unto his people Behold the people of the children of Israel are mo and mightier then we 10 Come on let us deal wisely with them lest they multiply and it come to pass that when there falleth out any war they joyn also unto our enemies and fight against us and so get them up out of the land 11 Therefore they did set over them task-masters to afflict them with their burdens And they built for Pharaoh treasure-cities Pithom and Raamses 12 †Heb. and as they afflicted them so they multiplied c. But the more they afflicted them the more they multiplyed and grew And they were grieved because of the children of Israel 13 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour 14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage in morter and in brick and in all manner of service in the field all their service wherein they made them serve was with rigour 15 And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives of which the name of one was Shiphrah and the name of the other Puah 16 And he said When ye do the office of a midwise to the Hebrew women and see them upon the stools if it be a son then ye shall kill him but if it be a daughter then she shall live 17 But the
turned himself and went out from Pharaoh 7 And Pharaohs servants said unto him How long shall this man be a snare unto us Let the men go that they may serve the LORD their God Knowest thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed 8 And Moses and Aaron were brought again unto Pharaoh and he said unto them Go serve the LORD your God but †Heb. who and who c. who are they that shall go 9 And Moses said We will go with our young and with our old with our sons and with our daughters with our flocks and with our herds will we go for we must hold a feast unto the LORD 10 And he said unto them Let the LORD be so with you as I will let you go and your little ones look to it for evil is before you 11 Not so go now ye that are men and serve the LORD for that you did desire And they were driven out from Pharaohs presence 12 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Stretch out thine hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts that they may come up upon the land of Egypt and eat every herb of the land even all that the hail hath left 13 And Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt and the LORD brought an east-wind upon the land all that day and all that night and when it was morning the east-wind brought the locusts 14 And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt and rested in all the coasts of Egypt very grievous were they before them there were no such locusts as they neither after them shall be such 15 For they covered the face of the whole earth so that the land was darkned and they did eat every herb of the land and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left and there remained not any green thing in the trees or in the herbs of the field through all the land of Egypt 16 ¶ Then Pharaoh †Heb. hastned to call called for Moses and Aaron in haste and he he said I have sinned against the LORD your God and against you 17 Now therefore forgive I pray thee my sin onely this once and intreat the LORD your God that he may take away from me this death onely 18 And he went out from Pharaoh and intreated the LORD 19 And the LORD turned a mighty strong west-wind which took away the locusts and †Heb. fastned cast them into the Red sea there remained not one locust in all the coasts of Egypt 20 But the LORD hardned Pharaohs heart so that he would not let the children of Israel go 21 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Stretch out thine hand toward heaven that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt †Heb. that one may feel darkness even darkness which may be felt 22 And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days 23 They saw not one another neither rose any from his place for three days * Wisd 18.1 but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings 24 ¶ And Pharaoh called unto Moses and said Go ye serve the LORD onely let your flocks and your herds be stayed let your little ones also go with you 25 And Moses said Thou must give †Heb. into our hands us also sacrifices and burnt-offerings that we may sacrifice unto the LORD our God 26 Our cattel also shall go with us there shall not an hoof be left behinde for thereof must we take to serve the LORD our God and we know not with what we must serve the LORD until we come thither 27 ¶ But the LORD hardned Pharaohs heart and he would not let them go 28 And Pharaoh said unto him Get thee from me take heed to thy self see my face no more for in that day thou seest my face thou shalt die 29 And Moses said Thou hast spoken well I will see thy face again no more CHAP. XI 1 Gods message to the Israelites to borrow jewels of their neighbours 4 Moses threatneth Pharaoh with the death of the first-born ANd the LORD said unto Moses Yet will I bring one plague more upon Pharaph and upon Egypt afterwards he will let you go hence when he shall let you go he shall surely thrust you out hence altogether 2 Speak now in the ears of the people and let every man borrow of his neighbour and every woman of her neighbour * Chap. â— 22 and 12 35. jewels of silver and jewels of gold 3 And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians Moreover the man * Eccluâ— 45.1 Moses was very great in the land of Egypt in the sight of Pharaohs servants and in the sight of the people 4 And Moses said Thus saith the LORD * Chap. 12.29 About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt 5 And all the first-born in the land of Egypt shall die from the first-born of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne even unto the first-born of the maid servant that is behinde the mill and all the first-born of beasts 6 And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt such as there was none like it nor shall be like it any more 7 But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue against man or beast that ye may know how that the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel 8 And all these thy servants shall come down unto me and bow down themselves unto me saying Get thee out and all the people †Heb. that is at thy feet that follow thee and after that I will go out and he went out from Pharaoh in †Heb. heat of anger a great anger 9 And the LORD said unto Moses Pharaoh shall not hearken unto you that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt 10 And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh and the LORD hardned Pharaohs heart so that he would not let the children of Israel go out of his land CHAP. XII 1 The beginning of the year is changed 3 The pass-over is instituted 11 The rice of the pass-over 15Vnleavened bread 29 The first-born are slain 31 The Israelites are driven out of the land 37 They come to Succoth 43 The ordinance of the pass-over ANd the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt saying 2 This moneth shall be unto you the beginning of moneths it shall be the first moneth of the year to you 3 ¶ Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel saying In the tenth day of this moneth they shall take to them every man a ‖ Or kid lamb according to the house of their fathers a lamb for an house 4 And if the hoâ—â—hold be too little for the lamb let him his neighbour next unto his

It is not in heaven that thou shouldest say Who shall go up for us to heaven and bring it unto us that we may hear it and do it 13 Neither is it beyond the sea that thou shouldest say Who shall go over the sea for us and bring it unto us that we may hear it and do it 14 But the word is very nigh unto thee in thy mouth and in thy heart that thou mayest do it 15 ¶ See I have set before thee this day life good and death and evil 16 In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God to walk in his ways to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgements that thou mayest live and multiply and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it 17 But if thine heart turn away so that thou wilt not hear but shalt be drawn away and worship other gods and serve them 18 I denounce unto you this day that ye shall surely perish and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land whither thou passest over Jordan to go to possess it 19 * Chap. 4.26 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you that I have set before you life and death blessing and cursing therefore choose life that both thou and thy seed may â—ive 20 That thou mayest love the LORD thy God and that thou mayest obey his voice and that thou mayest cleave unto him for he is thy life and the length of thy days that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers to Abraham to Isaac and to Jacob to give them CHAP. XXXI 1 Moses encourageth the people 7 He encourageth Joshua 9 He delivereth the law unto the priests to read it in the seventh â—ear to the people 14 God giveth a charge to Joshua 19 and a song to testifie against the people 24 Moses delivereth the book of the law to the Levites to keep 28 He maketh a protestation to the elders ANd Moses went and spake these words unto all Israel 2 And he said unto them I am an hundred and twenty years old this day I can no more go out and come in also the LORD hath said unto me * Numb 20.12 Chap. 3.27 Thou shalt not go over this Jordan 3 The LORD thy God he will go over before thee and he will destroy these nations from before thee and thou shalt possess them and Joshua he shall go over before thee * Numb 27.21 as the LORD hath said 4 And the LORD shall do unto them as he did to Sihon and to Og kings of the Amorites and unto the land of them whom he destroyed 5 And * Chap. â— 2 the LORD shall give them up before your face that ye may do unto them according unto all the commandments which I have commanded you 6 Be strong and of a goood courage fear not nor be afraid of them for the LORD thy God he it is that doth go with thee he will not fail thee nor forsake thee 7 ¶ And Moses called unto Joshua and said unto him in the sight of all Israel Be strong and of a good courage for thou must go with this people unto the land which the LORD hath sworn unto their fathers to give them and thou shalt cause them to inherit it 8 And the LORD he it is that doth go before thee he will be with thee he will not fail thee neither forsake thee fear not neither be dismayed 9 ¶ And Moses wrote this law and delivered it unto the priests the sons of Levi which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD and unto all the elders of Israel 10 And Moses commanded them saying At the end of every seven years in the solemnity of the * Chap. 25.1 year of release in the fâ—ast of tabernacles 11 When all Israel is come to appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose thou shalt read this law before all Israel in their hearing 12 Gather the people together men and women and children and thy stranger that is within thy gates that they may hear and that they may learn and fear the LORD your God and observe to do all the words of this law 13 And that their children which have not known any thing may hear and learn to fear the LORD your God as long as ye live in the land whither ye go over Jordan to possess it 14 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Behold thy days approach that thou must die call Joshua and present yourselves in the tabernacle of the congregation that I may give him a charge And Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in the tabernacle of the congregation 15 And the LORD appeared in the tabernacle in a pillar of a cloud and the pillar of the cloud stood over the door of the tabernacle 16 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Behold thou shalt †Heb. lie down sleep with thy fathers and this people will rise up and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land whither they go to be amongst them and will forsake me and break my covenant which I have made with them 17 Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day and I will forsake them and I will hide my face from them and they shall be devoured and many evils and troubles shall †Heb. finde them befal them so that they will say in that day Are not these evils come upon us because our God is not amongst us 18 And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought in that they are turned unto other gods 19 Now therefore write ye this song for you and teach it the children of Israel put it in their mouths that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel 20 For when I shall have brought them into the land which I sware unto their fathers that floweth with milk and honey and they shall have eaten and filled themselves and waxen fat then will they turn unto other gods and serve them and provoke me and break my covenant 21 And it shall come to pass when many evils and troubles are befaln them that this song shall testifie †Heb. before against them as a witness for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed for I know their imagination which they †Heb. dâ— go about even now before I have brought them into the land which I sware 22 ¶ Moses
therefore wrote this song the same day and taught it the children of Israel 23 And he gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge and said * Jos 1.6 Be strong and of a good courage for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I sware unto them and I will be with thee 24 ¶ And it came to pass when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book until they were finished 25 That Moses commanded the Levites which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD saying 26 Take this book of the law and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God that it may be there for a witness against thee 27 For I know thy rebellion and thy stiff neck behold while I am yet alive with you this day ye have been rebellious against the LORD and how much more after my death 28 Gather unto me all the elders of your tribes and your officers that I may speak these words in their ears and call heaven and earth to record against them 29 For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt your selves and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you and evil will befal you in the latter days because ye will do evil in the sight of the LORD to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands 30 And Moses spake in the ears of all the congregation of Israel the words of this song until they were ended CHAP. XXXII 1 Moses song which setteth forth Gods mercy and vengeance 46 He exhorteth them to set their hearts upon it 48 God sendeth him up to mount Nebo to see the land and die GIve ear O ye heavens and I will speak and hear O earth the words of my mouth 2 My doctrine shall drop as the rain my speech shall distil as the dew as the small rain upon the tender herb and as the showers upon the grass 3 Because I will publish the name of the LORD ascribe ye greatness unto our God 4 He is the Rock his work is perfect for all his ways are judgement a God of truth and without iniquity just and right is he 5 †Heb. he hath corrupted to himself They have corrupted themselves ‖ Or that they are not his children that is their blot their spot is not the spot of his children they are a perverse and crooked generation 6 Do ye thus requite the LORD O foolish people and unwise is not he thy father that hath bought thee hath he not made thee and established thee 7 ¶ Remember the days of old consider the years of †Heb. generation and generation many generations ask thy father and he will shew thee thy elders and they will tell thee 8 When the most high divided to the nations their inheritance when he separated the sons of Adam he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel 9 For the LORDs portion is his people Jacob is the †Heb. cord lot of his inheritance 10 He found him in a desert land and in the waste howling wilderness he ‖ Or compassed him about led him about he instructed him he kept him as the apple of his eye 11 As an eagle stirreth up her nest fluttereth over her young spreadeth abroad her wings taketh them beareth them on her wings 12 So the LORD alone did lead him and there was no strange god with him 13 He made him ride on the high places of the earth that he might eat the increase of the fields and he made him to suck honey out of the rock and oyl out of the flinty rock 14 Butter of kine and milk of sheep with fat of lambs and rams of the breed of Bashan and goats with the fat of kidneys of wheat and thou didst drink the pure bloud of the grape 15 ¶ But Jeshurun waxed fat and kicked thou art waxen fat thou art grown thick thou art covered with fatness then he forsook God which made him lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation 16 They provoked him to jealousie with strange gods with abominations provoked they him to anger 17 They sacrificed unto devils ‖ Or which were not God not to God to gods whom they knew not to new gods that came newly up whom your fathers feared not 18 Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful and hast forgotten God that formed thee 19 And when the LORD saw it he ‖ Or despised abhorred them because of the provoking of his sons and of his daughters 20 And he said I will hide my face from them I will see what their end shall be for they are a very froward generation children in whom is no faith 21 They have moved me to jealousie with that which is not god they have provoked me to anger with their vanities and * Rom. 10.19 I will move them to jealousie with those which are not a people I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation 22 For a fire is kindled in my anger and ‖ Or hath burned shall burn unto the lowest hell and ‖ Or hath consumed shall consume the earth with her increase and set on fire the foundations of the mountains 23 I will heap mischiefs upon them I will spend mine arrows upon them 24 They shall be burnt with hunger and devoured with †Heb. burning â—oals burning heat and wâ—th bitter destruction I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them with the poyson of serpents of the dust 25 The sword without and terrour †Heb. from the chambers within shall †Heb. bereave destroy both the young man and the virgin the suckling also with the man of gray hairs 26 I said I would scatter them into corners I would make the remembrance of them to cease from among men 27 Were it not that I feared the wrath of the enemy lest their adversaries should behave themselves strangely and lest they should say ‖ Or Our high hand and not the LORD hath done all this Our hand is high and the LORD hath not done all this 28 For they are a nation void of counsel neither is there any understanding in them 29 O that they were wise that they understood this that they would consider their latter end 30 How should * Jos 23.10 one chase a thousand and two put ten thousand to flight except their Rock had sold them and the LORD had shut them up 31 For their rock is not as our Rock even our enemies themselves being judges 32 For their vine ‖ Or is worse then the vine of Sodom c. is of the vine of Sodom and of the fields of Gomorrah their grapes are grapes of gall their clusters are bitter 33 Their wine is the poyson of dragons and the cruel venome of asps 34 Is not this laid up in store with
of the LORD our God that is before his tabernacle 30 ¶ And when Phinehas the priest and the princes of the congregation and heads of the thousands of Israel which were with him heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spake †Heb. it was good in their eyes it pleased them 31 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said unto the children of Reuben and to the children of Gad and to the children of Manasseh This day we perceive that the LORD is among us because ye have not committed this trespass against the LORD †Heb. then now ye have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the LORD 32 ¶ And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest and the princes returned from the children of Reuben and from the children of Gad out of the land of Gilead unto the land of Canaan to the children of Israel and brought them word again 33 And the thing pleased the children of Israel and the children of Israel blessed God and did not intend to go up against them in battel to destroy the land wherein the children of Reuben and Gad dwelt 34 And the chiâ—dren of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar ‖ That is A witness Ed for it shall be a witness between us that the LORD is God CHAP. XXIII 1 Joshua's exhortation before his death 3 by former benâ—fits 5 by promises 11 and by threatnings ANd it came to pass a long time after that the LORD had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round about that Joshua waxed old and †Heb. come into days stricken in age 2 And Joshua called for all Israel and for their elders and for their heads and for their judges and for their officers and said unto them I am old and stricken in age 3 And ye have seen all that the LORD your God hath done unto all these nations because of you for the * Exod. 14.14 LORD your God is he that hath fought for you 4 Behold I have divided unto you by lot these nations that remain to be an inheritance for your tribes from Jordan with all the nations that I have cut off even unto the great sea †Heb. at the sunsâ—â— west-ward 5 And the LORD your God he shall expel them from before you and drive them from out of your sight and ye shall possess their land as the LORD your God hath promised unto you 6 Be ye therefore very couragious to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses * Deu. 5. â—2 28.14 that ye turn not aside therefrom to the right hand or to the left 7 That ye come not among these nations these that remain amongst you neither * Ps 16.4 make mention of the name of their gods nor cause to swear by them neither serve them nor bow your selves unto them 8 ‖ Or for if you will cleave c. III. 1 Haman advanced by the king and despised by Mordecai seeketh revenge upon all the Jews 7 He casteth lots 8 He obtaineth by calumniation a decree of the king to put the Jews to death AFter these things did king Ahasuerus promote Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite and advanced him and set his seat above all the princes that were with him 2 And all the kings servants that were in the kings gate bowed and reverenced Haman for the king had so commanded concerning him but Mordecai bowed not nor did him reverence 3 Then the kings servants which were in the kings gate said unto Mordecai Why transgressest thou the kings commandment 4 Now it came to pass when they spake daily unto him and he hearkned not unto them that they told Haman to see whether Mordecai his maâ—ters would stand for he had told them that he was a Jew 5 And when Haman saw that Mordecai bowed not nor did him reverence then was Haman full of wrath 6 And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone for they had shewed him the people of Mordecai wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus even the people of Mordecai 7 ¶ In the first moneth that is the moneth Nisan in the twelfth year of king Ahasuerus they cast Pur that is the lot before Haman from day to day and from moneth to moneth to the twelfth moneth that is the moneth Adar 8 ¶ And Haman said unto king Ahasuerus There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the people in all the province of thy kingdom and their laws are diverse from all people neither keep they the kings laws therefore it is not †Heb. meet or eâ—uâ—l for the kings profit to suffer them 9 If it please the king let it be written †Heb. to destroy them that they may be destroyed and I will †Heb. weigh pay ten thousand talents of silver to the hands of those that have the charge of the business to bring it into the kings treasuries 10 And the king took his ring from his hand and gave it unto Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite the Jews ‖ Or oppressour enemy 11 And the king said unto Haman The silver is given to thee the people also to do with them as it seemeth good to thee 12 Then were the kings ‖ Or secretariâ—s scribes called on the thirteenth day of the first moneth and there was written according to all that Haman had commanded unto the kings lieutenants and to the governours that were over every province and to the rulers of every people of every province according to the writing thereof and to every people after their language in the name of king Ahasuerus was it written and sealed with the kings ring 13 And the letters were sent by posts into all the kings provinces to destroy to kill and to cause to perish all Jews both young and old little children and women in one day even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth moneth which is the moneth Adar and to take the spoil of them for a prey 14 The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was published unto all people that they should be ready against that day 15 The posts went out being hastned by the kings commandment and the decree was given in Shushan the palace and the king and Haman sat down to drink but the city Shushan was perplexed CHAP. IV. 1 The great mourning of Mordecai and the Jews 4 Esther understanding it sendeth to Mordecai who sheweth the cause and adviseth her to undertake the suit 10 She excusing her self is threatned by Mordecai 15 She appointing a fast undertaketh the suit WHen Mordecai perceived all that was done Mordecai rent his clothes and put on sackcloth with ashes and went out into the midst of the city and cried with a loud and a bitter cry 2 And came even before the kings gate for none miâ—ht enter into the kings gate clothed with sackcloth 3 And in every province whithersoever the kings commandment and his decree came there was great mourning among the Jews and fasting and weeping and wailing and †Heb. sackcloth and ashes were laid under many many lay in sackcloth ashes 4 ¶ So Esthers maids and her †Heb. â—â—muchs chamberlains came told it her then was the queen exceedingly grieved she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai and to take away his sackcloth from him but he received it not 5 Then called Esther for Hatach one of the kings chamberlains †Heb. whom he had set before her whom he had appointed to attend upon her and gave him a commandment to Mordecai to know what it was and why it was 6 So Hatach went forth to Mordecai unto the street of the city which was before the kings gate 7 And Mordecai told him of all that had hapned unto him and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the kings treasuries for the Jews to destroy them 8 Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them to shew it unto Esther and to declare it unto her and to charge her that she should go in unto the king to make supplication unto him and to make request before him for her people 9 And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai 10 ¶ Again Esther spake unto Hatach and gave him commandment unto Mordecai 11 All the kings servants and the people of the kings provinces do know that whosoever whether man or woman shall come unto the king into the inner court who is not called there is one saw of his to put him to death except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre that he may live

XVIII David praiseth God for his manifold and marvellous blâ—sings ¶ To the â—met musician A psalm of David the servant of the LORD who spake unto the LORD the words of * 2 Sam. 22. this long in the day that the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul And he said I Will love thee O LORD my strength 2 The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer my God †Heb. my â—â—â—k my strength in whom I will trust my buckler and the horn of my salvation and my high tower 3 I will call upon the LORD who is worthy to be praised so shall I be saved from mine enemies 4 * Psal 115.3 The sorrows of death compassed me and the flouds of †Heb. Belial ungodly men made me afraid 5 The ‖ Or â—ordâ— sorrows of hell compassed me about the snares of death prevented me 6 In my distress I called upon the LORD and cried unto my God he heard my voice out of his temple and my cry came before him even into his ears 7 Then the earth shook and trembled the foundations also of the hills moved and were shaken because he was wroth 8 There went up a smoke †Heb. by his out of his nostrils and fire out of his mouth devoured coals were kindled by it 9 He bowed the heavens also and came down and darkness was under his feet 10 And he rode upon a cherub and did flie yea he did flie upon the wings of the wind 11 He made darkness his secret place his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies 12 At the brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed hail stones and coals of fire 13 The LORD also thundred in the heavens and the Highest gave his voice hail stones and coals of fire 14 Yea he sent out his arrows and scattered them and he shot out lightnings and discomfited them 15 Then the chanels of waters were seen and the foundations of the world were discovered at thy rebuke O LORD at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils 16 He sent from above he took me he drew me out of ‖ Or. great waters many waters 17 He delivered me from my strong enemy and from them which hated me for they were too strong for me 18 They prevented me in the day of my calamity but the LORD was my stay 19 He brought me forth also into a large place he delivered me because he delighted in me 20 The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me 21 For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not wickedly departed from my God 22 For all his judgments were before me and I did not put away his statutes from me 23 I was also upright †Heb. with before him and I kept my self from mine iniquity 24 Therefore hath the LORD recompensed me according to my righteousness according to the cleanness of my hands †Heb. before his eyes in his eye-sight 25 With the merciful thou wilt shew thy self merciful with an upright man thou wilt shew thy self upright 26 With the pure thou wilt shew thy self pure and with the froward thou wilt ‖ Or â—reâ—iâ—e shew thy self froward 27 For thou wilt save the afflicted people but wilt bring down high looks 28 For thou wilt light my ‖ Or lamp candle the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness 29 For by thee I have ‖ Or broken run through a troop and by my God have I leaped over a wall 30 As for God his way is perfect * Psal â—2 6. and 119.140 Prov. 30. â— the word of the LORD is ‖ Or refined tried he is a buckler to all those that trust in him 31 * Deut. 3â— 39. 1 Sam. 2.2 Psal 86.8 Isa 45.5 For who is God save the LORD or who is a rock save our God 32 It is God that girdeth me with strength and maketh my way perfect 33 He maketh my feet
deceit shall not dwell within my house he that telleth lies †Heb. shall not be established shall not tarry in my sight 8 I will early destroy all the wicked of the land that I may cut off all wicked doers from the city of the LORD PSâ—L CII 1 The prophet in his prayer maketh a grievous complaint 12 He taketh comfort in the eternity and mercy of God 18 The mercies of God are to be recorded 23 He sustaineth his weakness by the unchangeableness of God ¶ A prayer ‖ Or for of the afflicted when he is over whelmed and poureth out his complaint before the LORD HEar my prayer O LORD and let my cry come unto thee 2 Hide not thy face from me in the day when I am in trouble incline thine ear unto me in the day when I call answer me speedily 3 For my days are consumed ‖ Or as some read into smoke like smoke and my bones are burnt as an hearth 4 My heart is smitten and withered like grass so that I forget to eat my bread 5 By reason of the voice of my groaning my bones cleave to my ‖ Or flesh skin 6 I am like a pelican of the wilderness I am like an owl of the desert 7 I watch and am as a sparrow alone upon the house-top 8 Mine enemies reproach me all the day and they that are mad against me are sworn against me 9 For I have eaten ashes like bread and mingled my drink with weeping 10 Because of thine indignation and thy wrath for thou hast lifted me up and cast me down 11 * Isa 40.6 Jam. 1.10 My days are like a shadow that declineth and I am withered like grass 12 But thou O LORD shalt endure for ever and thy remembrance unto all generations 13 Thou shalt arise and have mercy upon Zion for the time to favour her yea the set time is come 14 For thy servants take pleasure in her stones and favour the dust thereof 15 So the heathen shall fear the name of the LORD and all the kings of the earth thy glory 16 When the LORD shall build up Zion he shall appear in his glory 17 He will regard the prayer of the destitute and not despise their prayer 18 This shall be written for the generation to come and the people which shall be created shall praise the LORD 19 For he hath looked down from the height of his sanctuary from heaven did the LORD behold the earth 20 To hear the groaning of the prisoner to loose †Heb. the children of death those that are appointed to death 21 To declare the name of the LORD in Zion and his praise in Jerusalem 22 When the people are gathered together and the kingdoms to serve the LORD 23 He †Heb. afflicted weakned my strength in the way he shortned my days 24 I said O my God take me not away in the midst of my days thy years are throughout all generations 25 †Heb. 1.10 Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth and the heavens are the work of thy hands 26 They shall perish but thou shalt †Heb. stanâ— endure yea all of them shall wax old like a garment as a vesture shalt thou change them and they shall be changed 27 But thou art the same and thy years shall have no end 28 The children of thy servants shall continue and their seed shall be established before thee PSAL. CIII 1 An exhortation to bless God for his mercy 15 and for the constancy thereof ¶ A psalm of David BLess the LORD O my soul and all that is within me bless his holy name 2 Bless the LORD O my soul and forget not all his benefits 3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities who healeth all thy diseases 4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction who crowneth thee with loving kindness and tender mercies 5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things so that thy youth is renewed like the eagles 6 The LORD executeth righteousness and judgement for all that are oppressed 7 He made known his ways unto Moses his acts unto the children of Israel 8 * Exod 34.6 7. XXV 1 Observations about kings 8 and about avoiding causes of quarrels and sundry causes thereof THese are also proverbs of Solomon which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out 2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing but the honour of kings is to search out a matter 3 The heaven for height and the earth for depth and the heart of kings †Heb. there is no starching is unsearchable 4 Take away the dross from the silver and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer 5 * Ch. 20.8 Take away the wicked from before the king and his throne shall be established in righteousness 6 †Heb. set not out thy glory Put not forth thy self in the presence of the king and stand not in the place of great men 7 * Lu. 14.10 For better it is that it be said unto thee Come up hither then that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes have seen 8 Go not forth hastily to strive lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame 9 * Mat. 5.25 18.15 Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself and ‖ Or discover not the secret of another discover not a secret to another 10 Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame and thine infamy turn not away 11 A word †Heb. spoken upon his wheels fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver 12 As an ear-ring of gold and an ornament of fine gold so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear 13 * Ch. 13.17 As the cold of snow in the time of harvest so is a faithful messenger to them that send him for he refresheth the soul of his masters 14 Whoso boasteth himself †Heb. in a gift of falshood of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain 15 * Gen. 32.4 c. 1 Sa. 25.24 c. XXVII 1 The care of God over his vineyard 7 His chastisements differ from judgements 12 The Church of Jews and Gentiles IN that day the LORD with his fore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the ‖ Or crossing like a bar piercing serpent even leviathan that crooked serpent and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea 2 In that day sing ye unto her A vineyard of red wine 3 I the LORD do keep it I will water it every moment lest any hurt it I will keep it night and day 4 Fury is not in me who would set the briers and thorns against me in battel I would ‖ Or march against go through them I would burn them together 5 Or let him take hold of my strength that he may make peace with me and he shall make peace with me 6 He shall cause them that come of Jacob to take root Israel shall blossom and bud and fill the face of the world with fruit 7 ¶ Hath he smitten him †Heb. according to the sâ—oâ—e of those as he smote those that smote him or is he slain according to the slaughter of them that are slain by him 8 In measure ‖ Or. when thou sendest it forth when it shooteth forth thou wilt debate with it ‖ Or when he removeth it he stayeth his rough wind in the day of the east-wind 9 By this therefore shall the iniquity of Jacob be purged and this is all the fruit to take away his sin when he maketh all the stones of the altar as chalk-stones that are beaten in sunder the groves and ‖ Or 〈◊〉 images images shall not stand up 10 Yet the defenced city shall be desolate and the habitation forsaken and left like a wilderness there shall the calf feed and there shall he lie down and consume the branches thereof 11 When the boughs thereof are withered they shall be broken off the women come and set them on fire for it is a people of no understanding therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them and he that formed them will shew them no favour 12 ¶ And it shall come to pass in that day that the LORD shall beat off from the chanel of the river unto the stream of Egypt and ye shall be gathered one by one O ye children of Israel 13 And it shall come to pass in that day that the great trumpet shall be blown and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria and the out casts in the land of Egypt and shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem CHAP. XXVIII 1 The prophet threatneth Ephraim for their pride and drunkenness 5 The residue shall be advanced in the kingdom of Christ 7 He rebuketh their errour 9 their untowardness to learn 14 and their security 16 Christ the sure foundationis promised 18 Their security shall be tried 23 They are incited to the consideration of Gods discreet providence WO to the crown of pride to the drunkards of Ephraim whose glorious beauty is a sading stower which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are †Heb. broken overcome with wine 2 Behold the Lord hath a mighty and strong one which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm as a floud of mighty waters overflowing shall cast down to the earth with the hand 3 The crown of pride the drunkards of Ephraim shall be troden †Heb. with feet under feet 4 And the glorious beauty which is on the head of the fat valley shall be a fading flower and as the hasty fruit before the summer which when he that looketh upon it seeth it while it is yet in his hand he †Heb. swalloweth eateth it up 5 ¶ In that day shall the LORD of hosts be for a crown of glory and for a diadem of beauty unto the residue of his people 6 And for a spirit of judgement to him that sitteth in judgement and for strength to them that turn the battel to the gate 7 ¶ But they also have erred through wine and through strong drink are out of the way the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink they are swallowed up of wine they are out of the way through strong drink they err in vision they stumble in judgement 8 For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness so that there is no place clean 9 ¶ Whom shall he teach knowledge and whom shall he make to understand †Heb. the bearing doctrine them that are weaned from the milk and drawn from the breasts 10 For precept ‖ Or hath been must be upon precept precept upon precept line upon line line upon line here a little and there a little 11 For with †Heb. stammerings of lips * 1 Cor. 14.21 stammering lips and another tongue ‖ Or he hath spoken will he speak to this people 12 To whom he said This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest and this is the refreshing yet they would not hear 13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept precept upon precept line upon line line upon line here a little and there a little that they might go and fall backward and be broken and snared and taken 14 ¶ Wherefore hear the word of the LORD ye scornful men that rule this people which is in Jerusalem 15 Because ye have said We have made a covenant with death and with hell are we at agreement when the overflowing scourge shall pass through it shall not come unto us for we have made lies our refuge and under falihood have we hid our selves 16 ¶ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD Behold I lay in Zion for a foundation * Psal 118.22 Matth. 21.42 Act. 4.11 Rom. 9.33 10.11 1 Pet 2.6 7 8. a stone a tried stone a precious corner stone a sure foundation he that believeth shall not make haste 17 Judgement also will I lay to the line and righteousness to the plummet and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies and the waters shall overflow the hiding place 18 ¶ And you covenant with death shall be disanulled and your agreement with hell shall not stand when the overflowing scourge shall pass through 〈◊〉 ye shall be †Heb. a treaâ—ing down to it troden down by it 19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you for morning by morning shall it pass over by day and by night and it shall be a vexation onely ‖ Or when be shall make you to understand doctrine to understand the
utterly ‖ Or abolished rooted out 11 Who then should make more mourning then she that hath lost so great a multitude and not thou which art sorry but for one 12 But if thou sayest unto me My lamentation is not like the earths because I have lost the fruit of my womb which I brought forth with pains and bare with sorrows 13 ‖ But the earth after the manner of the earth whereinto the present multitude is gone again as it came out But the earth not so for the multitude present in it according to the course of the earth is gone as it came 14 Then say I unto thee Like as thou hast brought forth with labour even so the earth also hath given her fruit namely man ever since the beginning unto him that made her 15 Now therefore keep thy sorrow to thy self and bear with a good courage that which hath be faln thee 16 For it thou shalt acknowledge the determination of God to be just thou shalt both receive thy son in time and shalt be commended amongst women 17 Go thy way then into the city to thine husband 18 And she said unto me That will I not do I will not go into the city but here will I die 19 So I proceeded to speak further unto her and said 20 Do not so but be counselled by me for how many are the adversities of Sion be comforted in regard of the sorrow of Jerusalem 21 For thou seest that our sanctuary is said waste our altar broken down our temple destroyed 22 Our psaltery is laid on the ground our song is put to silence our rejoycing is at an end the light of our candlestick is put out the ark of our covenant is spoiled our holy things are defiled and the name that is called upon us is almost profaned our children are put to shame our priests are burnt our Levites are gone into captivity our virgins are defiled and our wives ravished our righteous men carried away our little ones destroyed our young men are brought in bondage and our strong men are become weak 23 And which is the greatest of all the seal of Sion hath now lost her honour for she is delivered into the hands of them that hate us 24 And therefore shake off thy great heaviness and put away the multitude of sorrows that the Mighty may be merciful unto thee again and the Highest shall give thee rest and ease from thy labour 25 And it came to pass while I was talking with her behold her face upon a sudden shined exceedingly and her countenance glistered so that I was afraid of her and mused what it might be 26 And behold suddenly she made a great cry very fearful so that the earth shook at the noise of the woman 27 And I looked and behold the woman appeared unto me no more but there was a city builded and a large place shewed it self from the foundations then was I afraid and cried with a loud voice and said 28 Where is * Ch. 4.1 Uriel the angel who came unto me at the first for he hath caused me to fall ‖ Or into the multitude in a trance into many trances and mine end is turned into corruption and my prayer to rebuke 29 And as I was speaking these words behold he came unto me and looked upon me 30 And so I say as one that had been dead and mine understanding was taken from me and he took me by the right hand and comforted me and set me upon my feet and said unto me 31 What aileth thee and why art thou so disquieted and why is thine understanding troubled and the thoughts of thine heart 32 And I said Because thou hast forsaken me and yet I did according to thy * Chap 5.20 words and I went into the field and so I have seen and yet see that I am not able to express 33 And he said unto me Stand up manfully and I will advise thee 34 Then said I Speak on my lord in me onely forsake me not lest I die frustrate of my hope 35 For I have seen that I knew not and hear that I do not know 36 Or is my sense deceived or my soul in a dream 37 Now therefore I beseech thee that thou wilt shew thy servant of this ‖ Or trance vision 38 He answered me then and said Hear me and I shall inform thee and tell thee wherefore thou art afraid for the Highest will reveal many secret things unto thee 39 He hath seen that thy ‖ Or purpose way is right for that thou sorrowest continually for thy people and makest great lamentation for Sion 40 This therefore is the meaning of the vision which thou lately sawest 41 Thou sawest a woman mourning and thou beganst to comfort her 42 But now seest thou the likeness of the woman no more but there appeared unto thee a city builded 43 And whereas she told thee of the death of her son this is the ‖ Or interpretation solution 44 This woman whom thou sawest is Sion and whereas she said unto thee even she whom thou seest as a city builded 45 Whereas I say she said unto thee that she hath been thirty years barren those are the thirty years wherein there was no offering made in her 46 But after thirty years Solomon builded the city and offered offerings and then bare the barren a son 47 And whereas she told thee that she nourished him with labour that was the dwelling in Jerusalem 48 But whereas she said unto thee That my son coming into his marriage-chamber hapned to have a fall and died this was the destruction that came to Jerusalem 49 And behold thou sawest her likeness and because she mourned for her son thou beganst to comfort her and of these things which have chanced these are to be opened unto thee 50 For now the most High seeth that thou art grieved unfeignedly and sufferest from thy whole heart for her so hath he shewed thee the brightness of her glory and the comeliness of her beauty 51 And therefore I bade thee remain in the field where no house was builded 52 For I knew that the Highest would shew this unto thee 53 Therefore I commanded thee to go into the field where no foundation of any building was 54 For in the place wherein the Highest beginneth to shew his city there can no mans building be able to stand 55 And therefore sear not let not thine heart he affrighted but go thy way in and see the beauty and greatness of the building as much as thine eyes be able to see 56 And then shalt thou hear as much as thine ears may comprehend 57 For thou art blessed above many other and ‖ Or at called to be with c. art called with the Highest and so are but few 58 But to morrow at night thou shalt remain here 59 And so shall the Highest shew thee visions of the ‖ Or
the army of Assur and behold the canopy wherein he did lie in his drunkenness and the Lord hath smitten him by the hand of a woman 16 As the Lord liveth who hath kept me in my way that I went my countenance hath deceived him to his destruction and yet hath he not committed sin with me to defile and shame me 17 Then all the people were wonderfully astonished and bowed themselves and worshipped God and said with one accord Blessed be thou O our God which hast this day brought to nought the enemies of thy people 18 Then said Ozias unto her O daughter blessed art thou of the most high God above all the women upon the earth and blessed be the Lord God which hath created the heavens and the earth which hath directed thee to the cutting off of the head of the chief of our enemies 19 For this thy confidence shall not depart from the heart of men which remember the power of God for ever 20 And God turn these things to thee for a perpetual praise to visit thee in good things because thou hast not spared thy life for the affliction of our nation but hast revenged our ruine walking a straight way before our God And all the people said So be it so be it CHAP. XIV 8 Achior heareth Judith shew what she had done and is cirâ—umcised 11 The bead of Holofernes is hanged up 15 He as found dead and much lamented THen said Judith unto them Hear me now my brethren and take this * 2 Mac. 15.35 head and hang it upon the highest place of your walls 2 And so soon as the morning shall appear and the sun shall come forth upon the earth take you every one his weapons and go forth every valiant man out of the city and set you a captain over them as though you would go down into the field toward the watch of the Assyrians but go not down 3 Then they shall take their armour and shall go into their camp and raise up the captains of the army of Assur and they shall run to the tent of Holofernes but shall not finde him then fear shall fall upon them and they shall flee before your face 4 So you and all that inhabit the coast of Israel shall pursue them and overthrow them as they go 5 But before you do these things call me Achior the Ammonite that he may see and know him that despised the house of Israel and that sent him to us as it were to his death 6 Then they called Achior out of the house of Ozias and when he was come and saw the head of Holofernes in a mans hand in the assembly of the people he fell down on his face and his spirit failed 7 But when they had recovered him he fell at Judiths feet and reverenced heâ— and said Blessed art thou in all the tabernacle of Juda and in all nations which hearing thy name shall be astonished 8 Now therefore tell me all the things that then hast done in these days Then Judith declared unto him in the midst of the people all that she had done from the day that she went forth until that hour she spake unto them 9 And when she had left off speaking the people shouted with a loud voice and made a joyful noise in their city 10 And when Achior had seen all that the God of Israel had done he beleeved in God greatly and circumcised the flesh of his fore-skin and was joyned unto the house of Israel unto this day 11 And assoon as the morning arose they hanged the head of Holofernes upon the wall and every man took his weapons and they went forth by bands unto the ‖ Or â—sâ—â—es straits of the mountain 12 But when the Assyrians saw them they sent to their leaders which came to their captains and tribunes and to every one of their rulers 13 So they came to Holofernes tent and said to him that had the charge of all his things Waken now our lord for the slaves have been bold to come down against us to battel that they may be utterly destroyed 14 Then went in Bagoas and knocked at the door of the tent for he thought that he had slept with Judith 15 But because none answered he opened it and went into the bed-chamber and found him cast upon the floor dead and his head was taken from him 16 ‖ Then Therefore he cried with a loud voice with weeping and sighing and a mighty cry and rent his garments 17 After he went into the tent where Judith lodged and when he found her not he leaped out to the people and cried 18 These slaves have dealt treacherously one woman of the Hebrews hath brought shame upon the house of king Nabuchodonolor for behold Holofernes lieth upon the ground without a head 19 When the captains of the Assyrians army heard these words they rent their coats and their minds were wonderfully troubled and there was a cry and a very great noise throughout the camp CHAP. XV. 1 The Assyrians are chased and slain 8 The high priest cometh to see Judith 11 The stuff of Holofernes is given to Judith 13 The women crown her with a garland ANd when they that were in the tents heard they were astonished at the thing that was done 2 And fear and trembling fell upon them so that there was no man that durst abide in the sight of his neighbour but rushing out altogether they fled into every way of the plain and of the hill-countrey 3 They also that had camped in the mountains round about Bethulia fled away Then the children of Israel every one that was a warriour among them rushed out upon them 4 Then sent Oziaâ— to Betomasthem and to Bebai and Chobai and Cola and to all the coasts of Israel such as should tell the things that were done and that all should rush forth upon their enemies to destroy them 5 Now when the children of Israel heard it they all fell upon them with one consent and slew them unto Chobai likewise also they that came from Jerusalem and from all the hill-countrey for men had told them what things were done in the camp of their enemies and they that were in Galaad and in Galilee ‖ Or â—â—â—ams chased them with a great slaughter until they were past Damascus and the borders thereof 6 And the residue that dwelt at Bethulia fell upon the camp of Assur and spoiled them and were greatly enriched 7 And the children of Israel that returned from the slaughter had that which remained and the villages and the cities that were in the mountains and in the plain gat many spoils for the multitude was very great 8 Then Joacim the high pâ—â—â—st and the ancients of the children of Israel that dwelt in Jerusalem came to behold the good things that God had shewed to Israel and to see Judith and to salute her 9 And when they came unto her they blessed her with
carry the dinner that thou hast into Babylon unto Daniel who is in the lions den 35 And Habbacuc said Lord I never saw Babylon neither do I know where the den is 36 Then the angel of the Lord took him by the crown and * Ezek. 8.3 bare him by the hair of his head and through the vehemency of his spirit set him in Babylon over the den 37 And Habbacuc cried saying O Daniel Daniel * 1 Kin. 17.4 take the dinner which God hath sent thee 38 And Daniel said Thou hast remembred me O God neither hast thou forsaken them that seek thee and love thee 39 So Daniel arose and did eat and the angel of the Lord set Habbacuc in his own place again immediately 40 Upon the seventh day the king went to bewail Daniel and when he came to the den he looked in and behold Daniel was sitting 41 Then cried the king with a loud voice saying Great art thou O Lord God of Daniel and there is none other besides thee 42 * Jer. 37.17 And he drew him out and cast those that were the cause of his destruction into the den and they were devoured in a moment before his face ¶ The prayer of MANASSES king of Juda when he was holden captive in Babylon O Lord almighty God of our fathers Abraham Isaac and Jacob and of their righteous seed who hast made heaven and earth with all the ornament thereof who hast bound the sea by the word of thy commandment who hast shut up the deep and sealed it by thy terrible and glorious name whom all men fear and tremble before they power for the majesty of thy glory cannot be born and thine angry threatning towards sinners is importable but thy merciful promise is unmeasurable and unsearchable for thou art the most high Lord of great compassion long-suffering very merciful and repentest of the evils of men Thou O Lord according to thy great goodness hast promised repentance and forgiveness to them that have sinned against thee and of thine infinite mercies hast appointed repentance unto sinners that they may be saved Thou therefore O Lord that art the God of the just hast not appointed repentance to the just as to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob which have not sinned against thee but thou hast appointed repentance unto me that am a sinner for I have sinned above the number of the sands of the sea My transgressions O Lord are multiplied my transgressions are multiplied and I am not worthy to behold and see the height of heaven for the multitude of mine iniquity I am bowed down with many iron bands that I cannot lift up mine head ‖ Or neither take my breath neither have any release for I have provoked thy wrath and done evil before thee I did not thy will neither kept I thy commandments I have set up abominations and have multiplied offences Now therefore I bow the knee of mine heart beseeching thee of grace I have sinned O Lord I have sinned and I acknowledge mine iniquities wherefore I humbly beseech thee forgive me O Lord forgive me and destroy me not with mine iniquities Be not angry with me for ever by reserving evil for me neither condemn me into the lower parts of the earth For thou art the God even the God of them that repent and in me thou wilt shew all thy goodness for thou wilt save me that am unworthy according to thy great mercy Therefore I will praise thee for ever all the days of my life for all the powers of the heavens do praise thee and thine is the glory for ever and ever Amen ¶ The first book of the MACCABEES CHAP. I. 14 Antiochus gave leave to set up the fashions of the Gentiles in Jerusalem 22 and spoiled it and the temple in it 57 and set up therein the abomination of desolation 63 and slew those that did circumcise their children ANd it hapned after that Alexander son of Philip the Macedonian who came out of the land of ‖ Or Chetbiim Chettiim had smitten Darius king of the Persians and Medes that he reigned in his stead the first over Greece 2 And made many wars and wan many strong holds and slew the kings of the earth 3 And went through to the ends of the earth and took spoils of many nations insomuch that the earth was quiet before him whereupon ‖ Or his heart was exalted and lifted up he was exalted and his heart was lifted up 4 And he gathered a mighty strong host and ruled over countreys and nations and ‖ Or kingdoms which became c. kings who became tributaries unto him 5 And after these things he fell sick and perceived †Gr. that he dieth that he should die 6 Wherefore he called his servants such as were honourable and had been brought up with him from his youth and parted his kingdom among them while he was yet alive 7 So Alexander reigned twelve years and then died 8 And his servants bare rule every one in his place 9 And after his death they all put crowns upon themselves so did their sons after them many years and evils were multiplied in the earth 10 And there came out of them a wicked root Antiochus surnamed Epiphanes son of Antiochus the king who had been an hostage at Rome and he reigned in the hundred and thirty and seventh year of the kingdom of the Greeks 11 In those days went there out of Israel wicked men who perswaded many saying Let us go and make a covenant with the heathen that are round about us for since we departed from them †Gr. many evils have found us we have had much sorrow 12 So this device pleased them well 13 Then certain of the people were so forward herein that they went to the king who gave them licence to do after the ordinances of the heathen 14 Whereupon they ‖ Or set up an open school at Jerusalem built a place of exercise at Jerusalem according to the customs of the heathen 15 And made themselves uncircumcised and forsook the holy covenant and joyned themselves to the heathen and were sold to do mischief 16 Now when the kingdom was established before Antiochus he thought to reign over Egypt that he might have the dominion of two realms 17 Wherefore he entred into Egypt with a great multitude with chariots and elephants and hors-men and a great navy 18 And made war against Ptolemee king of Egypt but Ptolemee was afraid of him and fled and many were wounded to death 19 Thus they got the strong cities in the land of Egypt and he took the spoils thereof 20 And after that Antiochus had smitten Egypt he returned again in the hundred fourty and third year and went up against Israel and Jerusalem with a great multitude 21 And entred proudly into the sanctuary and took away the golden altar and the candlestick of light and all the vessels thereof 22 And the table
there was a great calm 27 But the men marvelled saying What manner of man is this that even the winds and the sea obey him 28 ¶ * Mar. 5.1 Luk. 8.26 And when he was come to the other side into the countrey of the Gergesenes there met him two possessed with devils coming out of the tombs exceeding fierce so that no man might pass by that way 29 And behold they cryed out saying What have we to do with thee Jesus thou Son of God art thou come hither to torment us before the time 30 And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding 31 So the devils besought him saying If thou cast us out suffer us to go away into the herd of swine 32 And he said unto them Go. And when they were come out they went into the herd of swine and behold the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea and perished in the waters 33 And they that kept them fled and went their ways into the city told everything and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils 34 And behold the whole city came out to meet Jesus and when they saw him they besought him that he would depart out of their coasts CHAP. IX 2 Christ curinâ— one sick of the palsie 9 calleth Matthew from the receipt of custom 10 eateth with publicans and sinners 14 defendeth his disciples for not fasting 20 cureth the bloudy issue 23 raiseth from death Jairus daughter 2â— giveth sight to two blinde mâ—n 32 healeth a dumb man possessed of a devil 36 and hath compassion of the multitude ANd he entred into a ship and passed over and cheer thy sins be forgiven thee 3 And behold certain of the scribes said within themselves This man blasphemeth 4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts said Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts 5 For whether is easier to say Thy sins be forgiven thee or to say Arise and walk 6 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins then saith he to the sick of the palsie Arise take up thy bed and go unto thine house 7 And he arose and departed to his house 8 But when the multitude saw it they marvelled and glorified God which had given such power unto men 9 ¶ * Mar. 2.14 have mercy not sacrifice for I am not come to call the righteous * 1 Tim. 1.15 but sinners to repentance 14 ¶ Then came to him the disciples of John saying * Mar. 2.18 Luk. 5.33 Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft but thy disciples fast not 15 And Jesus said unto them Can the children of the bride-chamber mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them but the days will come when the bridegroom shall be taken from them then shall they fast 16 No man putteth a piece of ‖ Or raw or unwrought cloth new cloth unto an old garment for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment and the rent is made worse 17 Neither do men put new wine into old bottles else the bottles break and the wine runneth out and the bottles perish but they put new wine into new bottles and both are tabernacle which is called the holiest of all 4 Which had the golden censer and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold wherein was * Ex. 16.34 the golden pot that had manna and * Num. 17.16 Aâ—rons rod that budded and * Deut. 10.5 1 King 8.9 〈◊〉 Chr. 5.10 the tables of the covenant 5 And * Ex. 25.22 over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercy-seat of which we cannot now speak particularly 6 Now when these things were thus ordained the priests went always into the first tabernacle accomplishing the service of God 7 But into the second went the high priest alone * Ex. 30.10 â—ev 16. 〈◊〉 once every year not without bloud which he offered for himself and for the errours of the people 8 The holy Ghost this signifying that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest while as the first tabernacle was yet standing 9 Which was a sigure for the time then present in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices that could not make him that did the service perfect as pertaining to the conscience 10 Which stood onely in meats and drinks and divers washings and carnal ‖ Or vitor ceremonies ordinances imposed on them until the time of reformation 11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come by a greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands that is to say not of this building 12 Neither by the bloud of goats and calves but by his own bloud he entred in once into the holy place having obtained eternal redemption fâ—r us 13 For it * Lev. 1â— 14 the bloud of bulls and of goats and * 1 Num. 19.17 c. the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh 14 How much more shall the bloud of Christ who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without ‖ Or fault spot to God purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God 15 And for this cause he is the Mediatour of the new testament that by means of death for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance 16 For where a testament is there must also of necessity ‖ Or be brought in be the death of the testatour 17 For a testament is of force after men are dead otherwise it is of no strength at all whilest the testatour liveth 18 Whereupon neither the first testament was ‖ Or purified dedicated without bloud 19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law he took the bloud of calves and of goats with water and ‖ Or purple scarlet wooll and hyssop and sprinkled both the book and all the people 20 Saying * Eâ— 24.8 This is the bloud of the testament which God hath enjoyned unto you 21 Moreover he sprinkled likewise with bloud both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministery 22 And almost all things are by the law purged with bloud and without shedding of bloud is no remission 23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices then these 24 For Christ is not entred into the holy places made with hands which are the figures of the true but into heaven it self now * 1 Joh. 2.1 to appear in the presence of God for us 25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often as the high priest entreth into the holy place every year with bloud of others 26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself 27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die but after this the judgement 28 So * 1 Pet. 3.18 Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation CHAP. X. 1 The weakness of the law-sacrifices 10 The sacrifice of Christs body once offered 14 for ever hath taken away sins 19 An exhortation to hold fast the faith with patience and thanksgiving FOr the law having a shadow of good things to come and not the very image of the things can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins 3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year 4 For it is not possible that the bloud of bulls and of goats should take away sins 5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world he saith * Psal 10.6 c. Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not but a body ‖ Or thou â—â—st fitted me hast thou prepared me 6 In burnt-offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure 7 Then said I Lo I come In the volume of the book it is written of me to do thy will O God 8 Above when he said Sacrifice and offering and barnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not neither hadst pleasure therein which are offered by the law 9 Then said he Lo I come to do thy will O God He taketh away the first that he may establish the second 10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all 11 And every priest standeth daily ministring and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices which can never take away sins 12 But this man after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever sat down on the right hand of God 13 From henceforth expecting * Psal 11â— 1. 1 Cor. 15.25 Chap. 1.13 till his enemies be made his footstool 14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified 15 Whereof the holy Ghost also is a witness to us for after that he had said before 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days saith the Lord I will * Jer. 31.33 put my laws into their hearts and in their minds will I write them 17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more 18 Now where remission of these is there is no more offering for sin 19 Having therefore brethren ‖ Or liberty boldness to enter into the holiest by the bloud of Jesus 20 By a new and living way which he hath ‖ Or new mâ—dâ— consecrated for us through the vail that is to say his flesh 21 And having an high priest over the house of God 22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and
