a_o resurrection_n and_o that_o not_o only_o because_o at_o that_o time_n when_o the_o law_n be_v give_v to_o he_o there_o be_v not_o only_o no_o resurrection_n promise_v but_o no_o saviour_n after_o we_o have_v suffer_v it_o and_o from_o a_o future_a and_o eternal_a punishment_n express_o reveal_v in_o the_o new_a testament_n to_o christian_n and_o probable_o also_o after_o the_o fall_n of_o adam_n and_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o woman_n believe_v by_o the_o patriarch_n and_o by_o god_n church_n among_o the_o jew_n by_o prevent_v it_o chap._n i._n the_o scripture_n reason_n to_o comply_v with_o the_o revelation_n than_o to_o bring_v the_o revelation_n to_o comply_v with_o their_o reason_n and_o therefore_o that_o we_o ourselves_o may_v practice_v what_o we_o can_v but_o judge_v to_o be_v best_a in_o the_o practice_n of_o other_o we_o shall_v lay_v the_o groundwork_n of_o all_o that_o be_v to_o follow_v upon_o the_o word_n of_o st._n peter_n in_o the_o four_o of_o the_o act_n and_o the_o twelve_o verse_n neither_o be_v there_o salvation_n in_o any_o other_o for_o there_o be_v no_o other_o name_n under_o heaven_n give_v among_o man_n whereby_o we_o that_o very_a question_n which_o they_o alone_o have_v make_v a_o question_n viz._n whether_o jesus_n christ_n die_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n i_o say_v they_o will_v alter_v it_o into_o another_o question_n neither_o fit_a to_o be_v dispute_v nor_o possible_a to_o be_v determine_v by_o shortsighted_a man_n viz._n what_o god_n can_v do_v and_o what_o god_n can_v do_v whereas_o it_o be_v sufficient_a for_o we_o to_o take_v thing_n as_o we_o find_v they_o and_o if_o we_o find_v that_o thing_n in_o the_o present_a case_n be_v so_o order_v by_o god_n and_o that_o he_o tell_v we_o that_o they_o be_v so_o as_o that_o sinful_a man_n shall_v not_o obtain_v redemption_n but_o only_o by_o the_o merit_n and_o death_n of_o jesus_n christ_n their_o saviour_n i_o say_v if_o god_n tell_v we_o and_o that_o too_o by_o repeat_v declaration_n that_o thing_n in_o the_o present_a case_n be_v so_o order_v we_o ought_v to_o acquiesce_v in_o such_o his_o declaration_n and_o not_o employ_v our_o vanity_n or_o curiosity_n for_o it_o can_v in_o no_o sober_a sense_n be_v call_v our_o reason_n in_o inquire_v whether_o much_o less_o in_o determine_v that_o they_o may_v or_o may_v not_o have_v be_v better_o order_v but_o of_o this_o more_o hereafter_o at_o present_v therefore_o and_o in_o the_o first_o place_n we_o shall_v take_v the_o matter_n of_o fact_n to_o be_v just_a as_o the_o scripture_n have_v in_o most_o plain_a and_o express_v word_n tell_v we_o it_o be_v that_o jesus_n christ_n die_v for_o our_o sin_n that_o he_o die_v to_o save_v sinner_n etc._n etc._n and_o then_o by_o compare_v this_o matter_n of_o fact_n with_o other_o the_o method_n of_o the_o divine_a proceed_n in_o the_o like_a case_n see_v if_o it_o will_v not_o afford_v we_o a_o very_a plausible_a argument_n of_o the_o truth_n lay_v down_o that_o there_o be_v not_o salvation_n in_o any_o other_o now_o if_o we_o carry_v our_o observation_n through_o any_o other_o the_o transaction_n of_o the_o divine_a love_n and_o mercy_n that_o do_v design_n to_o entitle_v man_n to_o the_o same_o salvation_n we_o shall_v find_v that_o god_n do_v never_o make_v use_n of_o extraordinary_a mean_n where_o the_o ordinary_a be_v sufficient_a and_o therefore_o when_o the_o lord_n himself_o appear_v to_o saul_n in_o his_o journey_n to_o damascus_n we_o find_v that_o the_o design_n and_o effect_v of_o that_o vision_n be_v to_o refer_v he_o to_o ananias_n for_o instruction_n in_o his_o duty_n and_o so_o when_o the_o angel_n appear_v to_o cornelius_n the_o business_n of_o his_o message_n be_v only_o to_o direct_v he_o to_o it_o be_v not_o the_o method_n of_o the_o divine_a proceed_n so_o neither_o be_v it_o of_o wisdom_n itself_o to_o let_v the_o measure_n of_o the_o mean_n exceed_v in_o their_o proportion_n to_o the_o design_v end_n and_o in_o any_o case_n whatsoever_o where_o less_o cost_n or_o labour_n be_v sufficient_a there_o common_a prudence_n will_v by_o no_o mean_n allow_v and_o much_o less_o approve_v our_o drudgery_n or_o profuseness_n now_o to_o bring_v what_o we_o have_v say_v to_o our_o present_a purpose_n since_o our_o saviour_n for_o the_o establishment_n of_o the_o gospel-covenant_n do_v actual_o take_v upon_o he_o our_o flesh_n and_o in_o that_o flesh_n suffer_v it_o will_v afford_v we_o no_o slight_a argument_n that_o that_o covenant_n can_v not_o have_v be_v establish_v upon_o more_o easy_a condition_n because_o our_o common_a reason_n do_v assure_v we_o that_o all_o excess_n of_o performance_n in_o the_o case_n will_v have_v be_v superfluity_n and_o our_o religion_n and_o modesty_n do_v forbid_v we_o to_o fasten_v any_o such_o imputation_n upon_o the_o divine_a counsel_n and_o action_n and_o here_o we_o may_v well_o put_v abraham_n question_n shall_v not_o the_o and_o holy_a therefore_o the_o conclusion_n that_o fair_o offer_v itself_o be_v that_o nothing_o less_o than_o the_o incarnation_n and_o death_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n can_v in_o wisdom_n and_o vengeance_n be_v as_o the_o just_a so_o also_o the_o necessary_a wage_n of_o sin_n and_o here_o before_o we_o begin_v to_o prevent_v as_o much_o as_o possible_a all_o objection_n that_o may_v be_v start_v against_o what_o we_o shall_v deliver_v we_o must_v desire_v the_o reader_n to_o take_v notice_n that_o we_o do_v at_o present_v only_o make_v it_o our_o business_n to_o measure_v the_o other_o measure_n in_o account_v for_o the_o proceed_n of_o the_o divine_a justice_n than_o what_o our_o experience_n acquaint_v we_o with_o in_o this_o world_n for_o while_o we_o live_v here_o we_o come_v within_o the_o compass_n and_o so_o enjoy_v the_o benefit_n of_o that_o relaxation_n of_o the_o law_n which_o be_v the_o purchase_n of_o our_o saviour_n merit_n and_o therefore_o we_o can_v true_o pass_v a_o judgement_n upon_o the_o exact_a proceed_n of_o the_o divine_a justice_n from_o the_o contemplation_n of_o those_o proceed_n of_o justice_n which_o we_o see_v in_o this_o world_n and_o which_o upon_o that_o account_n come_v within_o the_o compass_n of_o that_o relaxation_n to_o know_v therefore_o whether_o the_o incarnation_n life_n and_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v necessary_a for_o man_n redemption_n we_o must_v inquire_v what_o have_v become_v of_o sinful_a man_n if_o the_o son_n of_o god_n have_v not_o become_v his_o saviour_n and_o if_o upon_o that_o enquiry_n it_o shall_v appear_v that_o vengeance_n without_o any_o remedy_n have_v be_v his_o portion_n than_o it_o will_v also_o appear_v at_o least_o a_o probable_a conclusion_n for_o we_o shall_v adventure_v no_o far_o because_o we_o be_v utter_a stranger_n to_o the_o

be_v lay_v down_o and_o well_o observe_v the_o first_o proposition_n viz._n that_o punishment_n or_o vengeance_n be_v the_o just_a and_o necessary_a wage_n of_o sin_n will_v appear_v more_o easy_a and_o rational_a and_o for_o assert_v the_o truth_n of_o it_o we_o lay_v it_o down_o in_o the_o 1._o first_o place_n that_o god_n be_v in_o his_o own_o nature_n holy_a this_o do_v necessary_o fall_v in_o with_o our_o very_a notion_n of_o a_o god_n because_o it_o be_v a_o contradiction_n to_o our_o very_a conception_n of_o a_o deity_n to_o suppose_v any_o wickedness_n or_o turpitude_n in_o he_o 2._o we_o lay_v it_o down_o second_o that_o god_n love_v himself_o this_o will_v easy_o be_v allow_v for_o more_o reason_n than_o one_o both_o because_o the_o notion_n be_v natural_a and_o universal_a that_o all_o live_a thing_n do_v so_o as_o also_o because_o god_n can_v but_o be_v suppose_v to_o be_v the_o most_o noble_a and_o adequate_a as_o well_o as_o natural_a object_n if_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v of_o his_o own_o love_n nay_o some_o man_n have_v strain_v this_o point_n so_o far_o as_o to_o tell_v we_o that_o the_o great_a and_o infinite_a complacency_n that_o god_n take_v in_o himself_o and_o in_o his_o own_o perfection_n will_v never_o have_v allow_v he_o to_o condescend_v to_o his_o work_n of_o creation_n and_o by_o that_o mean_n to_o have_v allow_v any_o of_o his_o love_n and_o goodwill_n to_o low_a mean_a and_o inferior_a creature_n as_o the_o best_a of_o creature_n be_v if_o compare_v to_o he_o if_o the_o son_n who_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n have_v not_o interpose_v upon_o that_o occasion_n and_o so_o they_o make_v he_o a_o mediator_n of_o creation_n as_o well_o as_o of_o redemption_n but_o lay_v that_o aside_o at_o present_a as_o be_v nothing_o to_o our_o purpose_n it_o may_v suffice_v for_o our_o design_n that_o whatever_o love_n god_n bear_v to_o his_o creature_n it_o can_v be_v suppose_v but_o that_o he_o not_o only_a love_n but_o that_o he_o his_o nature_n and_o because_o all_o sin_n and_o wickedness_n be_v so_o that_o therefore_o he_o can_v choose_v but_o hate_n and_o abhor_v all_o sin_n and_o wickedness_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o of_o sin_n and_o as_o the_o experiment_n have_v pass_v the_o test_n that_o mankind_n can_v save_v itself_o from_o its_o sin_n so_o it_o have_v as_o good_a as_o do_v so_o that_o neither_o can_v the_o to_o our_o condescend_v fellow-creature_n we_o ought_v in_o reason_n to_o receive_v his_o visit_n to_o we_o that_o bring_v salvation_n with_o it_o not_o only_o with_o humble_a acknowledgement_n but_o with_o humble_a adoration_n too_o and_o when_o we_o find_v that_o he_o do_v not_o disdain_v to_o take_v care_n in_o his_o own_o person_n if_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v of_o our_o happiness_n and_o immutable_a law_n of_o truth_n holiness_n and_o justice_n but_o before_o we_o leave_v this_o head_n i_o will_v if_o that_o be_v possible_a make_v all_o a_o little_a plain_o by_o a_o instance_n and_o that_o instance_n shall_v be_v in_o that_o punishment_n which_o the_o first_o sin_n bring_v upon_o the_o whole_a race_n of_o mankind_n and_o i_o do_v the_o rather_o take_v my_o instance_n there_o because_o the_o law_n be_v give_v and_o break_v and_o so_o the_o penalty_n both_o threaten_v and_o incur_v when_o there_o be_v no_o saviour_n to_o remit_v the_o rigorous_a but_o just_a execution_n of_o such_o penalty_n now_o we_o be_v assure_v by_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o thing_n it-self_n as_o we_o have_v already_o discourse_v but_o if_o that_o will_v not_o do_v we_o be_v assure_v by_o god_n word_n by_o his_o promise_n by_o his_o oath_n that_o he_o neither_o will_n nor_o delight_n in_o the_o death_n of_o a_o sinner_n and_o when_o he_o swear_v so_o to_o we_o it_o will_v be_v both_o proper_a and_o modest_a in_o we_o to_o believe_v that_o there_o be_v something_o in_o sin_n which_o do_v oblige_v god_n in_o justice_n and_o that_o be_v the_o same_o thing_n with_o god_n as_o to_o be_v oblige_v by_o necessity_n to_o punish_v it_o with_o death_n and_o to_o this_o purpose_n we_o may_v take_v notice_n that_o it_o be_v derogatory_n to_o god_n honour_n for_o we_o to_o resolve_v any_o punishment_n which_o we_o suffer_v into_o god_n will_n only_o and_o not_o into_o his_o justice_n because_o as_o we_o shall_v present_o perceive_v when_o god_n will_v the_o death_n of_o a_o sinner_n he_o therefore_o only_o will_v it_o because_o justice_n do_v require_v it_o and_o that_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n antecedent_o to_o such_o his_o will._n for_o if_o the_o death_n of_o a_o man_n shall_v be_v therefore_o just_a only_o because_o god_n will_v it_o though_o the_o man_n do_v not_o deserve_v it_o than_o it_o may_v be_v all_o one_o as_o to_o the_o event_n and_o that_o just_o too_o whether_o a_o man_n be_v perfect_o innocent_a or_o the_o most_o profligate_v miscreant_n upon_o the_o face_n of_o the_o earth_n for_o according_a to_o that_o doctrine_n which_o we_o now_o oppose_v god_n may_v in_o such_o a_o case_n just_o will_v the_o death_n of_o the_o innocent_a and_o save_v the_o criminal_a alive_a for_o if_o the_o ultimate_a resolution_n of_o the_o justice_n of_o our_o death_n be_v only_o into_o the_o will_n of_o god_n than_o nothing_o can_v hinder_v but_o that_o god_n may_v just_o slay_v a_o perfect_a innocent_a and_o so_o when_o god_n tell_v adam_n that_o in_o the_o day_n of_o his_o transgression_n he_o shall_v sure_o die_v the_o mean_v of_o his_o threat_n must_v have_v be_v that_o he_o may_v have_v die_v whether_o he_o have_v transgress_v or_o not_o but_o because_o we_o can_v without_o blasphemy_n tax_v god_n law_n of_o such_o notorious_a prevarication_n therefore_o we_o must_v determine_v that_o the_o ultimate_a resolution_n of_o adam_n punishment_n in_o such_o case_n must_v be_v into_o the_o desert_n of_o such_o punishment_n by_o the_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n and_o that_o god_n willing_a his_o death_n be_v a_o just_a consequent_a of_o such_o his_o desert_n in_o short_a god_n will_v such_o thing_n only_o which_o he_o can_v will_v just_o and_o he_o who_o will_v rational_o and_o true_o account_v for_o the_o proceed_n of_o god_n in_o that_o and_o such_o like_a case_n must_v have_v a_o care_n to_o do_v it_o so_o as_o to_o maintain_v the_o harmony_n of_o all_o his_o attribute_n he_o must_v not_o magnify_v his_o power_n no_o nor_o his_o mercy_n so_o as_o to_o impeach_v his_o truth_n wisdom_n and_o justice_n for_o he_o who_o confound_v the_o event_n of_o innocence_n and_o gild_n will_v be_v find_v when_o his_o opinion_n come_v narrow_o to_o be_v scan_v to_o make_v god_n either_o a_o favourer_n of_o sin_n or_o a_o enemy_n of_o righteousness_n the_o sum_n of_o all_o be_v that_o when_o god_n tell_v we_o that_o death_n all_o one_o as_o to_o the_o event_n and_o that_o just_o and_o final_o too_o whether_o a_o man_n depart_v this_o life_n the_o best_a or_o the_o worst_a man_n in_o the_o whole_a world_n for_o if_o there_o be_v not_o some_o law_n of_o justice_n that_o shall_v at_o the_o last_o day_n distinguish_v the_o event_n of_o their_o contrary_a course_n than_o nothing_o can_v and_o if_o that_o justice_n be_v not_o necessary_a let_v the_o mean_n by_o which_o it_o be_v not_o so_o be_v what_o they_o will_v the_o difference_n between_o their_o condition_n can_v be_v but_o casual_a or_o at_o the_o very_o best_a but_o arbitrary_a and_o so_o we_o must_v leave_v they_o both_o to_o a_o grand_a perhaps_o which_o will_v be_v in_o effect_n to_o destroy_v all_o religion_n and_o justice_n there_o be_v one_o thing_n against_o this_o discourse_n of_o weight_n and_o moment_n which_o though_o i_o shall_v profess_o answer_v in_o another_o place_n yet_o shall_v not_o go_v unmentioned_a here_o and_o that_o be_v that_o
and_o his_o law_n he_o will_v be_v unwise_a also_o and_o therefore_o 6._o last_o the_o last_o judgement_n and_o that_o description_n that_o we_o meet_v with_o of_o it_o in_o god_n word_n do_v full_o assure_v we_o that_o he_o have_v no_o such_o design_n in_o his_o counsel_n as_o to_o throw_v away_o his_o law_n to_o gratify_v his_o enemy_n with_o impunity_n from_o all_o which_o reason_n and_o as_o we_o do_v believe_v from_o each_o of_o they_o in_o particular_a it_o seem_v satisfactory_o evident_a that_o a_o gospel-pardon_a of_o sin_n be_v no_o absolute_a pardon_n and_o that_o therefore_o when_o god_n do_v in_o the_o gospel_n promise_v pardon_n of_o sin_n there_o must_v be_v some_o previous_a condition_n that_o must_v be_v observe_v in_o order_n to_o such_o a_o pardon_n and_o what_o share_v our_o saviour_n have_v in_o the_o performance_n and_o accomplishment_n of_o such_o condition_n we_o shall_v learn_v hereafter_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n before_o we_o dismiss_v this_o chapter_n we_o must_v not_o dissemble_v that_o it_o may_v be_v surmise_v and_o therefore_o also_o that_o it_o may_v be_v object_v that_o though_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o alsolute_a gospel-pardon_a that_o yet_o there_o may_v be_v a_o arbitrary_a gospel-pardon_a and_o that_o there_o be_v some_o expression_n in_o the_o new_a testament_n that_o lean_a that_o way_n and_o may_v at_o least_o incline_v we_o to_o believe_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n but_o because_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o no_o pardon_n can_v come_v from_o god_n but_o what_o be_v just_a and_o because_o we_o know_v that_o arbitrary_a justice_n be_v only_o one_o branch_n of_o arbitrary_a power_n and_o therefore_o be_v in_o reality_n no_o justice_n at_o all_o for_o it_o be_v only_o a_o resolute_a determination_n of_o the_o will_n without_o any_o reason_n for_o such_o determination_n therefore_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o it_o can_v belong_v to_o god_n for_o all_o his_o action_n be_v limit_v and_o bound_v by_o his_o holiness_n that_o be_v by_o the_o eternal_a rule_n of_o reason_n and_o justice_n and_o he_o only_o therefore_o will_v what_o he_o please_v because_o he_o neither_o do_v not_o can_n please_v to_o will_v any_o thing_n but_o what_o be_v just_o chap._n iii_o a_o gospel-salvation_n contain_v in_o it_o 1._o pardon_v of_o sin_n 2._o the_o gift_n of_o eternal_a happiness_n to_o these_o two_o other_o thing_n require_v 1._o a_o expiation_n of_o sin_n 2._o a_o restitution_n to_o holiness_n negative_o the_o several_a way_n how_o such_o expiation_n can_v be_v make_v from_o whence_o a_o inference_n of_o the_o doctrine_n assert_v with_o some_o practical_a inference_n have_v in_o the_o first_o chapter_n make_v it_o good_a that_o misery_n and_o death_n that_o be_v in_o one_o word_n that_o vengeance_n be_v as_o the_o just_a so_o also_o the_o necessary_a wage_n of_o sin_n and_o in_o the_o second_o that_o the_o gospel_n itself_o hold_v out_o no_o such_o thing_n to_o we_o as_o either_o a_o absolute_a or_o arbitrary_a forgiveness_n of_o sin_n our_o next_o proposition_n must_v be_v that_o because_o the_o gospel_n in_o this_o very_a case_n be_v the_o revelation_n of_o god_n will_n and_o because_o the_o will_n and_o counsel_n of_o god_n in_o that_o gospel_n reveal_v be_v the_o pardon_n and_o salvation_n of_o man_n that_o therefore_o man_n sin_n be_v to_o be_v pardon_v though_o not_o by_o a_o absolute_a or_o arbitrary_a forgiveness_n and_o then_o because_o it_o must_v for_o that_o reason_n be_v pardon_v some_o way_n or_o other_o it_o will_v be_v our_o next_o business_n to_o inquire_v what_o that_o way_n be_v for_o by_o such_o enquiry_n it_o may_v perhaps_o appear_v to_o be_v a_o gospel-truth_n and_o that_o too_o agreeable_a to_o reason_n that_o there_o be_v not_o salvation_n in_o any_o other_o but_o in_o jesus_n christ_n alone_o and_o that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o name_n under_o heaven_n give_v among_o man_n whereby_o we_o must_v be_v save_v and_o here_o because_o the_o gospel_n promise_v no_o absolute_a pardon_n of_o sin_n as_o we_o do_v from_o thence_o in_o the_o first_o place_n conclude_v that_o the_o pardon_n must_v be_v conditional_a so_o we_o must_v in_o the_o next_o place_n inquire_v what_o that_o condition_n or_o what_o those_o condition_n be_v upon_o which_o this_o pardon_n be_v to_o be_v obtain_v now_o if_o in_o order_n to_o our_o more_o rational_a and_o satisfactory_a resolution_n of_o this_o enquiry_n we_o do_v first_o look_v into_o the_o gospel_n there_o to_o inform_v ourselves_o what_o a_o gospel-salvation_n mean_n we_o may_v from_o thence_o learn_v that_o it_o do_v contain_v in_o it_o two_o thing_n whereof_o the_o first_o be_v pardon_v of_o sin_n and_o the_o second_o be_v the_o gift_n of_o eternal_a happiness_n and_o in_o order_n to_o the_o obtain_n of_o these_o two_o thing_n as_o we_o shall_v see_v more_o full_o in_o the_o far_a prosecution_n of_o this_o matter_n two_o other_a thing_n be_v in_o the_o gospel_n require_v 1._o a_o expiation_n of_o sin_n and_o 2._o a_o restitution_n to_o our_o lose_a holiness_n for_o as_o we_o may_v conclude_v from_o our_o second_o proposition_n that_o though_o the_o gospel_n do_v allow_v a_o pardon_n yet_o because_o it_o do_v not_o allow_v a_o absolute_a pardon_n of_o sin_n that_o therefore_o something_o will_v be_v require_v in_o order_n to_o such_o a_o pardon_n so_o we_o may_v conclude_v from_o our_o first_o proposition_n that_o because_o punishment_n for_o sin_n be_v necessary_a therefore_o some_o punishment_n be_v that_o what_o it_o will_v at_o present_a must_v be_v suffer_v for_o our_o sin_n and_o then_o if_o in_o the_o progress_n of_o our_o discourse_n it_o shall_v appear_v that_o in_o consideration_n of_o any_o such_o punishment_n so_o suffer_v the_o gospel-pardon_a of_o our_o sin_n do_v afterward_o ensue_v then_o such_o pardon_n may_v be_v so_o far_o ascribe_v to_o such_o punishment_n as_o that_o our_o gild_n and_o the_o vengeance_n due_a to_o such_o our_o gild_n may_v be_v true_o esteem_v to_o be_v expiate_v by_o it_o now_o in_o order_n to_o find_v out_o what_o punishment_n it_o be_v that_o can_v make_v such_o a_o expiation_n we_o shall_v first_o inquire_v what_o punishment_n can_v do_v it_o and_o because_o repentance_n do_v not_o so_o whole_o consist_v in_o action_n but_o that_o it_o must_v have_v something_o of_o suffer_v mix_v with_o it_o therefore_o in_o pursuit_n of_o our_o design_n let_v our_o first_o negative_a proposition_n be_v this_o 1._o that_o our_o repentance_n for_o our_o sin_n can_v never_o make_v out_o a_o expiation_n of_o our_o sin_n for_o though_o repentance_n for_o our_o sin_n be_v a_o gospel-condition_n require_v of_o we_o without_o which_o we_o shall_v never_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o gospel-expiation_n yet_o notwithstanding_o that_o we_o neither_o do_v nor_o can_v by_o our_o repentance_n make_v out_o that_o expiation_n for_o sin_n which_o be_v by_o the_o gospel_n necessary_a for_o our_o salvation_n for_o beside_o that_o there_o be_v no_o man_n repentance_n so_o exact_a and_o complete_a as_o to_o free_v he_o from_o all_o sin_n while_o he_o live_v and_o so_o after_o all_o he_o must_v remain_v a_o sinner_n as_o long_o as_o he_o live_v i_o say_v beside_o that_o his_o very_a manner_n of_o go_v out_o of_o the_o world_n and_o that_o be_v by_o death_n be_v a_o demonstrative_a proof_n that_o his_o repentance_n have_v not_o make_v a_o expiation_n for_o his_o sin_n because_o we_o may_v most_o certain_o conclude_v that_o his_o sin_n be_v not_o then_o expiate_v and_o so_o neither_o pardon_v when_o god_n himself_o lay_v on_o the_o penalty_n threaten_v in_o his_o law_n with_o his_o own_o hand_n for_o when_o god_n give_v his_o law_n to_o mankind_n in_o their_o universal_a father_n and_o representative_a adam_n we_o know_v that_o he_o ratify_v such_o law_n by_o the_o penalty_n of_o death_n and_o we_o know_v also_o that_o every_o man_n let_v he_o be_v as_o pemtent_a as_o can_v be_v suppose_v do_v still_o suffer_v that_o penalty_n and_o we_o may_v from_o thence_o also_o know_v that_o for_o that_o reason_n no_o man_n repentance_n can_v so_o far_o expiate_v his_o sin_n as_o to_o free_v he_o from_o the_o punishment_n threaten_v to_o it_o by_o the_o law_n and_o then_o from_o the_o whole_a we_o may_v conclude_v that_o if_o any_o man_n be_v save_v because_o he_o be_v a_o true_a penitent_n he_o must_v be_v save_v by_o some_o other_o expiation_n than_o by_o such_o his_o repentance_n forasmuch_o as_o his_o repentance_n can_v at_o the_o most_o but_o qualify_v he_o to_o be_v make_v a_o partaker_n of_o such_o expiation_n 2._o as_o man_n repentance_n for_o his_o sin_n which_o we_o may_v call_v his_o voluntary_a punishment_n for_o sin_n can_v so_o neither_o can_v his_o profess_a punishment_n which_o we_o may_v call_v his_o legal_a punishment_n for_o sin_n expiate_v his_o sin_n and_o so_o
obtain_v for_o he_o a_o gospel-forgiveness_n and_o that_o for_o this_o reason_n because_o there_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n in_o the_o gospel_n as_o a_o eternal_a punishment_n allot_v to_o sin_n and_o as_o under_o the_o last_o head_n we_o find_v that_o reason_n do_v fall_v in_o with_o the_o gospel_n and_o that_o they_o both_o speak_v the_o same_o thing_n so_o also_o we_o shall_v find_v it_o here_o for_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o punishment_n of_o sinful_a man_n can_v therefore_o never_o expiate_v his_o sin_n because_o it_o can_v never_o purchase_v a_o just_a release_n from_o punishment_n and_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o it_o can_v do_v that_o if_o it_o may_v be_v just_o continue_v to_o eternity_n and_o that_o it_o may_v be_v so_o we_o may_v learn_v from_o hence_o because_o the_o law_n of_o grace_n be_v god_n law_n as_o well_o as_o the_o law_n of_o work_n must_v for_o that_o reason_n be_v just_a and_o we_o be_v assure_v by_o this_o law_n as_o much_o as_o word_n can_v assure_v we_o punishment_n of_o all_o our_o other_o sin_n as_o well_o as_o with_o that_o punishment_n which_o be_v due_a to_o such_o sin_n for_o it_o be_v reason_n and_o justice_n that_o a_o more_o heinous_a sin_n shall_v be_v punish_v with_o a_o more_o grievous_a judgement_n and_o it_o be_v truth_n and_o reason_n that_o a_o sinner_n do_v then_o become_v a_o more_o heinous_a criminal_a when_o to_o his_o of_o obtain_v that_o happiness_n come_v from_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n but_o foolish_a man_n defeat_v the_o counsel_n of_o god_n by_o a_o obstinate_a and_o unrelenting_a perseverance_n in_o sin_n and_o do_v in_o this_o case_n as_o he_o do_v in_o most_o other_o turn_v the_o blessing_n of_o god_n into_o a_o curse_n upon_o himself_o that_o be_v he_o make_v that_o life_n which_o be_v design_v for_o his_o eternal_a happiness_n a_o occasion_n of_o the_o eternity_n of_o his_o misery_n one_o thing_n more_o may_v be_v add_v to_o what_o have_v be_v say_v upon_o this_o head_n and_o then_o we_o be_v tell_v in_o one_o place_n that_o as_o by_o man_n come_v death_n there_o be_v the_o sin_n of_o adam_n and_o the_o wage_n of_o such_o sin_n by_o man_n come_v also_o the_o resurrection_n of_o the_o dead_a there_o be_v the_o redemption_n of_o our_o saviour_n and_o his_o purchase_n and_o more_o express_o still_o to_o our_o present_a purpose_n speak_v the_o same_o apostle_n in_o the_o same_o so_o many_o stumbling-block_n in_o the_o way_n of_o plain_a and_o honest_a christian_n 4._o the_o wisdom_n justice_n reasonableness_n and_o congruity_n of_o our_o saviour_n incarnation_n in_o order_n to_o his_o purchase_n of_o man_n redemption_n do_v yet_o far_o appear_v in_o that_o by_o become_a man_n he_o put_v himself_o into_o a_o capacity_n of_o suffer_a death_n that_o be_v of_o suffer_v that_o punishment_n which_o the_o law_n have_v denounce_v against_o those_o that_o shall_v transgress_v it_o for_o it_o be_v a_o gross_a mistake_n and_o do_v indeed_o bring_v a_o scandal_n upon_o god_n veracity_n to_o affirm_v that_o he_o threaten_v great_a vengeance_n in_o any_o law_n before_o the_o transgression_n of_o it_o than_o he_o will_v execute_v after_o the_o transgression_n that_o so_o he_o may_v the_o more_o effectual_o prevent_v such_o transgression_n for_o god_n never_o yet_o threaten_v any_o peremptory_a and_o unconditional_a punishment_n in_o any_o law_n which_o he_o have_v not_o or_o when_o the_o time_n come_v he_o will_v not_o as_o certain_o execute_v in_o the_o day_n thou_o eat_v thereof_o thou_o shall_v sure_o die_v say_v god_n the_o threaten_v we_o see_v be_v the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n and_o therefore_o notwithstanding_o his_o death_n and_o that_o too_o in_o our_o stead_n we_o see_v that_o all_o man_n and_o even_o those_o who_o hope_v for_o salvation_n by_o such_o his_o death_n do_v yet_o die_v what_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n in_o this_o case_n have_v puchase_v for_o we_o be_v not_o a_o freedom_n but_o a_o release_n from_o death_n and_o therefore_o that_o redemption_n from_o death_n which_o be_v the_o purchase_n of_o his_o blood_n be_v to_o be_v accomplish_v after_o we_o have_v be_v dead_a by_o a_o resurrection_n a_o effect_n of_o such_o his_o expiation_n so_o his_o incarnation_n be_v a_o necessary_a forerunner_n of_o such_o his_o death_n and_o therefore_o before_o he_o can_v possible_o die_v for_o man_n and_o so_o purchase_v a_o redemption_n of_o man_n from_o death_n it_o be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o law_n of_o wisdom_n justice_n and_o reason_n that_o he_o shall_v become_v man_n himself_o but_o then_o how_o his_o death_n come_v to_o be_v of_o so_o valuable_a a_o price_n as_o to_o make_v so_o glorious_a a_o purchase_n we_o must_v leave_v to_o far_a enquiry_n for_o by_o that_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o as_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o he_o shall_v die_v the_o death_n of_o a_o man_n so_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o such_o his_o humanity_n shall_v be_v unite_v to_o the_o divinity_n and_o by_o both_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o god_n be_v manifest_v in_o the_o flesh_n to_o destroy_v the_o work_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o that_o therefore_o when_o the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o so_o much_o they_o tell_v we_o no_o more_o than_o what_o be_v agreeable_a to_o wisdom_n justice_n and_o reason_n chap._n vi_o the_o divinity_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n necessary_a for_o the_o expitation_n of_o man_n that_o such_o his_o qualification_n be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o law_n of_o justice_n and_o to_o the_o rule_n of_o reason_n and_o wisdom_n our_o next_o enquiry_n must_v be_v how_o such_o his_o sacrifice_n come_v to_o be_v of_o such_o a_o value_n as_o to_o be_v just_o sufficient_a to_o make_v good_a such_o a_o expiation_n for_o because_o the_o death_n of_o a_o innocent_a man_n if_o he_o be_v no_o more_o than_o a_o mere_a man_n be_v but_o the_o death_n of_o a_o creature_n and_o because_o no_o creature_n can_v by_o its_o punishment_n in_o another_o creature_n be_v stead_n expiate_v the_o sin_n of_o that_o other_o creature_n for_o if_o it_o can_v than_o a_o creature_n may_v by_o its_o own_o punishment_n
expiate_v its_o own_o sin_n both_o which_o we_o have_v already_o show_v to_o be_v impossible_a therefore_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o as_o our_o saviour_n in_o order_n to_o his_o undertake_n the_o expiation_n of_o sin_n shall_v be_v a_o real_a man_n a_o creature_n so_o that_o he_o shall_v be_v more_o than_o a_o creature_n in_o order_n to_o the_o accomplish_n of_o such_o his_o undertake_n for_o though_o by_o become_a man_n he_o do_v accommodate_v his_o condition_n to_o his_o design_n of_o undertake_v a_o expiation_n as_o we_o have_v just_a now_o see_v yet_o for_o all_o that_o his_o humanity_n have_v sink_v under_o but_o but_o have_v not_o take_v away_o the_o burden_n have_v it_o not_o be_v support_v by_o his_o divinity_n for_o that_o that_o crush_v both_o angel_n and_o man_n and_o that_o too_o while_o they_o cope_v against_o it_o only_o with_o their_o own_o strength_n beyond_o the_o possibility_n of_o a_o recovery_n must_v for_o the_o same_o reason_n have_v crush_v he_o also_o when_o once_o he_o have_v put_v himself_o in_o man_n stead_n and_o by_o consequence_n into_o man_n condition_n have_v he_o not_o be_v endow_v with_o a_o power_n superior_a to_o both_o to_o enable_v he_o to_o subdue_v and_o conquer_v it_o and_o what_o power_n but_o that_o of_o god_n can_v we_o think_v sufficient_a to_o conquer_v sin_n and_o death_n and_o that_o too_o when_o they_o have_v get_v to_o such_o a_o height_n as_o to_o have_v infect_v and_o overrun_v the_o whole_a race_n of_o mankind_n can_v we_o think_v that_o when_o the_o contagion_n and_o mischief_n have_v spread_v itself_o so_o wide_o that_o even_o the_o best_a of_o man_n and_o those_o who_o grace_n be_v chief_o celebrate_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n himself_o can_v not_o preserve_v themselves_o from_o the_o overflow_a inundation_n i_o say_v can_v we_o think_v that_o in_o such_o a_o case_n any_o one_o single_a man_n be_v he_o no_o more_o than_o a_o man_n can_v have_v save_v himself_o from_o the_o universal_a mischief_n by_o the_o strength_n of_o his_o own_o resolution_n or_o virtue_n and_o if_o in_o reason_n we_o must_v think_v that_o he_o can_v not_o then_o how_o can_v we_o in_o reason_n think_v that_o his_o strength_n shall_v be_v sufficient_a to_o rescue_v and_o save_v all_o the_o rest_n no_o such_o salvation_n belong_v only_o to_o the_o arm_n of_o god_n and_o he_o who_o can_v save_v from_o sin_n death_n and_o hell_n and_o can_v over_o and_o above_o extend_v such_o salvation_n over_o all_o the_o earth_n and_o that_o too_o through_o all_o the_o successive_a generation_n of_o mankind_n that_o ever_o do_v or_o ever_o shall_v live_v upon_o the_o earth_n must_v be_v god_n and_o god_n alone_o the_o extensive_a merit_n therefore_o of_o the_o death_n and_o suffering_n of_o the_o man_n christ_n jesus_n derive_v itself_o from_o the_o infinite_a dignity_n of_o jesus_n the_o son_n of_o god_n for_o have_v not_o this_o jesus_n be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n as_o well_o as_o the_o son_n of_o man_n he_o have_v never_o be_v the_o saviour_n of_o man_n and_o if_o there_o be_v not_o salvation_n in_o any_o other_o as_o in_o effect_n the_o whole_a book_n of_o god_n do_v tell_v we_o it_o may_v seem_v inconceivable_a how_o this_o seed_n of_o the_o woman_n shall_v extend_v this_o salvation_n and_o so_o break_v the_o serpent_n head_n from_o the_o day_n of_o adam_n to_o the_o consummation_n of_o all_o thing_n unless_o all_o thing_n be_v in_o his_o disposal_n that_o be_v unless_o he_o be_v god_n no_o he_o who_o consider_v the_o thing_n serious_o and_o wise_o may_v be_v satisfy_v not_o only_o by_o the_o scripture_n but_o by_o his_o own_o reason_n also_o that_o there_o be_v the_o same_o mercy_n and_o the_o same_o power_n require_v to_o redeem_v sinful_a man_n that_o be_v require_v to_o make_v man_n and_o that_o he_o only_o who_o do_v the_o first_o can_v do_v the_o last_o and_o therefore_o as_o we_o be_v teach_v by_o god_n that_o all_o thing_n be_v make_v by_o his_o word_n so_o be_v we_o also_o that_o this_o word_n be_v make_v flesh_n and_o that_o by_o be_v so_o make_v he_o become_v to_o we_o after_o we_o be_v dead_a in_o trespass_n and_o sin_n the_o word_n of_o life_n from_o all_o which_o and_o a_o great_a deal_n more_o that_o may_v be_v offer_v both_o from_o reason_n and_o from_o revelation_n some_o of_o which_o thing_n we_o have_v already_o speak_v to_o and_o some_o of_o which_o we_o shall_v have_v occasion_n to_o speak_v to_o hereafter_o we_o may_v be_v not_o only_o inform_v but_o assure_v that_o the_o great_a merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n expiation_n make_v for_o sin_n by_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n do_v arise_v from_o hence_o that_o his_o divinity_n be_v personal_o unite_v to_o that_o body_n which_o undergo_v such_o death_n or_o that_o nothing_o less_o than_o the_o death_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n can_v expiate_v that_o death_n which_o the_o law_n have_v denounce_v against_o the_o sin_n of_o man._n but_o because_o these_o thing_n will_v appear_v in_o a_o more_o full_a and_o clear_a light_n in_o the_o far_a prosecution_n of_o our_o design_n therefore_o we_o here_o leave_v they_o for_o a_o while_n and_o proceed_v for_o it_o have_v appear_v as_o to_o matter_n of_o fact_n and_o that_o too_o by_o most_o express_a declaration_n of_o scripture_n that_o our_o saviour_n be_v make_v a_o expiatory_a sacrifice_n for_o sin_n justice_n but_o before_o we_o proceed_v to_o speak_v to_o that_o it_o will_v be_v proper_a that_o we_o make_v some_o inference_n of_o weight_n and_o moment_n from_o what_o have_v be_v already_o speak_v and_o 1._o by_o what_o have_v be_v say_v it_o appear_v plain_o that_o though_o our_o saviour_n make_v good_a the_o purchase_n of_o our_o redemption_n by_o his_o death_n and_o resurrection_n yet_o that_o such_o his_o purchase_n shall_v not_o be_v full_o make_v over_o to_o we_o till_o our_o own_o resurrection_n that_o he_o make_v good_a the_o purchase_n his_o resurrection_n be_v a_o demonstration_n for_o because_o the_o wage_n of_o sin_n be_v death_n and_o because_o he_o die_v for_o our_o sin_n and_o not_o for_o his_o own_o and_o because_o after_o such_o his_o death_n he_o rise_v again_o and_o because_o such_o his_o resurrection_n be_v a_o discharge_n from_o the_o penalty_n of_o those_o sin_n for_o which_o he_o die_v i_o say_v from_o all_o these_o thing_n it_o be_v evident_a that_o he_o accomplish_v his_o design_a purchase_n that_o be_v he_o make_v good_a his_o expiation_n by_o his_o death_n and_o resurrection_n but_o then_o on_o the_o other_o side_n because_o it_o be_v most_o certain_a that_o we_o be_v not_o redeem_v from_o the_o curse_n or_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n till_o we_o be_v redeem_v from_o death_n and_o because_o we_o be_v not_o redeem_v from_o death_n till_o we_o rise_v from_o the_o dead_a that_o be_v till_o our_o own_o resurrection_n therefore_o it_o be_v as_o evident_a that_o till_o such_o our_o resurrection_n we_o be_v not_o put_v into_o the_o possession_n of_o such_o his_o purchase_n and_o therefore_o strict_o speak_v no_o man_n be_v he_o who_o he_o will_v be_v â—actually_o justify_v in_o this_o life_n for_o because_o every_o man_n that_o life_n shall_v certain_o die_v and_o because_o death_n be_v the_o penalty_n threaten_v to_o sin_n by_o the_o law_n it_o therefore_o grate_v too_o hard_o upon_o our_o common_a sense_n to_o tell_v we_o that_o any_o man_n be_v then_o justify_v when_o he_o be_v not_o only_o liable_a to_o the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o law_n but_o when_o he_o be_v also_o sure_a in_o a_o little_a time_n to_o undergo_v such_o vengeance_n if_o therefore_o any_o man_n be_v according_a to_o a_o gospel-estimate_n of_o righteousness_n a_o righteous_a or_o good_a man_n we_o may_v upon_o that_o account_n say_v and_o we_o shall_v say_v true_a that_o he_o be_v in_o a_o justifiable_a condition_n but_o we_o can_v true_o say_v that_o he_o be_v a_o justify_v person_n justification_n then_o in_o the_o execution_n belong_v to_o a_o future_a life_n and_o not_o to_o this_o and_o when_o we_o shall_v come_v to_o discourse_v on_o the_o second_o thing_n contain_v in_o a_o gospel-salvation_n which_o be_v a_o restitution_n to_o holiness_n and_o the_o consequent_a of_o it_o the_o gift_n of_o eternal_a life_n we_o shall_v then_o be_v more_o full_o satisfy_v that_o justification_n can_v belong_v to_o any_o man_n in_o this_o world_n because_o no_o man_n in_o this_o

perform_v such_o condition_n for_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o the_o denunciation_n of_o the_o law_n upon_o the_o transgression_n of_o it_o be_v in_o the_o day_n thou_o eat_v thereof_o thou_o shall_v adam_n sin_n but_o our_o own_o sin_n too_o we_o do_v not_o present_o die_v but_o that_o god_n wait_v our_o return_n that_o he_o may_v be_v gracious_a to_o we_o and_o because_o we_o know_v that_o such_o his_o patience_n and_o forbearance_n be_v therefore_o extend_v to_o we_o that_o we_o may_v by_o our_o repentance_n qualify_v ourselves_o to_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o that_o expiation_n which_o be_v make_v by_o our_o saviour_n for_o there_o be_v not_o salvation_n in_o any_o other_o therefore_o we_o do_v at_o last_o conclude_v that_o the_o grant_v of_o a_o space_n for_o repentance_n a_o competent_a time_n in_o which_o sinner_n may_v perform_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n purchase_v by_o the_o saviour_n that_o we_o say_v also_o concern_v the_o mean_n which_o be_v necessary_a for_o such_o their_o performance_n such_o be_v his_o word_n the_o succour_n and_o assistance_n of_o his_o spirit_n his_o sacrament_n and_o whatever_o else_o do_v usual_o come_v under_o the_o title_n of_o mean_n of_o grace_n for_o it_o be_v not_o conceivable_a that_o our_o saviour_n shall_v purchase_v for_o we_o the_o end_n and_o yet_o leave_v we_o without_o the_o mean_n which_o be_v necessary_a for_o the_o bring_n about_o such_o end_n but_o yet_o because_o the_o mean_n to_o enable_v we_o to_o perform_v the_o condition_n require_v of_o we_o in_o order_n to_o our_o salvation_n be_v not_o nor_o indeed_o can_v possible_o be_v that_o very_a salvation_n for_o which_o they_o be_v design_v or_o employ_v as_o mean_n and_o because_o while_o we_o live_v in_o this_o world_n we_o be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v necessary_a that_o it_o be_v neither_o proper_a no_o nor_o wise_a to_o employ_v any_o mean_n for_o any_o end_n already_o attain_v therefore_o what_o we_o observe_v under_o our_o last_o head_n will_v still_o remain_v true_a and_o that_o be_v that_o no_o man_n be_v actual_o justify_v in_o this_o life_n 3._o from_o what_o have_v be_v say_v we_o take_v notice_n that_o though_o we_o have_v see_v our_o life_n be_v continue_v in_o consideration_n of_o our_o saviour_n purchase_n though_o affliction_n be_v lay_v upon_o we_o during_o the_o reprieve_n and_o though_o such_o affliction_n do_v confess_o come_v from_o the_o hand_n of_o justice_n yet_o they_o be_v never_o lay_v on_o without_o a_o design_n and_o mixture_n of_o mercy_n and_o therefore_o as_o they_o be_v the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n past_a so_o they_o be_v design_v as_o mean_n of_o grace_n for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v and_o by_o the_o wise_a counsel_n of_o our_o merciful_a and_o gracious_a god_n be_v but_o though_o it_o be_v so_o do_v in_o no_o wise_n encroach_v upon_o such_o purchase_n but_o rather_o promote_v the_o design_n of_o it_o for_o a_o life_n continue_v in_o order_n to_o the_o performance_n of_o those_o condition_n by_o the_o performance_n of_o which_o man_n in_o and_z through_o his_o saviour_n may_v obtain_v salvation_n a_o life_n i_o say_v continue_v to_o such_o a_o purpose_n be_v more_o likely_a to_o answer_v to_o such_o purpose_n if_o its_o attempt_n after_o sinful_a commission_n be_v restrain_v than_o it_o can_v be_v be_v such_o attempt_v leave_v free_a and_o at_o large_a for_o which_o reason_n such_o restraint_n though_o it_o be_v cause_v by_o affliction_n do_v rather_o fall_v in_o with_o than_o control_v the_o design_n of_o our_o saviour_n purchase_n and_o though_o it_o be_v confess_v that_o such_o restraint_n be_v not_o so_o efficacious_a for_o the_o prevention_n of_o future_a sin_n as_o death_n without_o any_o reprieve_n have_v be_v for_o in_o the_o last_o case_n the_o prevention_n have_v be_v necessary_a whereas_o in_o the_o first_o it_o be_v at_o the_o most_o but_o possible_a yet_o it_o must_v be_v confess_v also_o that_o it_o be_v most_o wise_o suit_v to_o the_o circumstance_n of_o those_o about_o who_o it_o be_v employ_v and_o that_o for_o this_o reason_n because_o all_o restraint_n be_v design_v either_o to_o keep_v or_o to_o make_v they_o good_a it_o be_v necessary_a in_o order_n to_o either_o that_o it_o be_v leave_v to_o their_o own_o choice_n whether_o they_o will_v improve_v it_o to_o either_o or_o both_o design_n or_o no_o for_o there_o can_v be_v no_o goodness_n at_o all_o without_o such_o freedom_n by_o all_o which_o we_o may_v at_o last_o understand_v that_o though_o affliction_n as_o well_o as_o death_n be_v the_o wage_n of_o sin_n and_o though_o god_n do_v not_o let_v the_o reprieve_a life_n of_o a_o sinner_n pass_v on_o without_o the_o token_n of_o his_o displeasure_n that_o be_v in_o the_o present_a case_n without_o affliction_n yet_o that_o it_o be_v owe_v to_o our_o saviour_n that_o all_o such_o affliction_n be_v employ_v
general_a that_o it_o be_v found_v in_o our_o saviour_n all_o the_o debate_n at_o present_a be_v whether_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel-reward_n be_v found_v in_o that_o saviour_n obedience_n or_o in_o his_o death_n or_o in_o other_o word_n whether_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o reward_n be_v not_o so_o ground_v upon_o our_o saviour_n obedience_n as_o the_o promise_n of_o pardon_n be_v upon_o his_o expiatory_a sacrifice_n and_o if_o those_o reason_n which_o we_o have_v already_o or_o shall_v hereafter_o offer_v do_v prove_v that_o in_o justice_n and_o reason_n it_o be_v so_o then_o the_o objection_n vanish_v i_o may_v add_v that_o the_o objection_n only_o speak_v to_o the_o matter_n of_o fact_n that_o there_o be_v a_o promise_v make_v in_o the_o gospel_n to_o a_o imperfect_a obedience_n which_o no_o one_o so_o far_o as_o i_o know_v deny_v but_o it_o do_v not_o speak_v as_o to_o the_o matter_n of_o right_n and_o justice_n how_o such_o a_o promise_n can_v be_v just_o and_o reasonable_o make_v without_o any_o violence_n offer_v to_o the_o law_n of_o work_n which_o be_v god_n law_n as_o well_o as_o the_o gospel_n be_v so_o and_o we_o may_v be_v sure_a that_o god_n law_n do_v not_o either_o contradict_v each_o other_o or_o control_v any_o the_o law_n or_o rule_n of_o true_a justice_n or_o reason_n that_o then_o which_o be_v the_o only_a thing_n which_o be_v at_o present_a maintain_v be_v that_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o reward_n in_o the_o gospel_n to_o a_o imperfect_a obedience_n have_v never_o be_v make_v to_o man_n at_o all_o because_o it_o can_v not_o have_v be_v make_v just_o if_o the_o law_n of_o work_n give_v to_o man_n have_v never_o be_v fulfil_v by_o man_n and_o that_o the_o gospel-promise_a be_v grant_v in_o consideration_n that_o our_o saviour_n fulfil_v that_o law_n and_o to_o this_o the_o objection_n so_o call_v be_v real_o no_o objection_n at_o all_o it_o be_v confess_v indeed_o that_o the_o eternal_a life_n promise_v to_o believer_n in_o the_o gospel_n will_v be_v attend_v with_o a_o happiness_n inconceivable_o great_a than_o the_o eternal_a life_n promise_v in_o the_o law_n to_o adam_n and_o it_o may_v be_v thereupon_o surmise_v that_o the_o reward_v promise_v in_o the_o gospel_n have_v no_o eye_n to_o the_o obedience_n require_v in_o the_o law_n and_o if_o it_o have_v not_o that_o then_o the_o eternal_a happiness_n of_o believer_n can_v be_v the_o purchase_n of_o our_o saviour_n obedience_n to_o the_o law_n to_o which_o i_o shall_v say_v no_o more_o at_o present_a than_o this_o viz._n that_o it_o be_v agree_v that_o our_o saviour_n by_o his_o death_n take_v away_o death_n the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n and_o make_v good_a such_o his_o achievement_n by_o a_o resurrection_n now_o the_o life_n after_o the_o resurrection_n be_v a_o life_n in_o a_o spiritual_a body_n not_o in_o a_o natural_a i_o speak_v the_o apostle_n word_n and_o our_o natural_a reason_n tell_v we_o that_o a_o life_n in_o a_o spiritual_a body_n be_v a_o more_o refine_a and_o exalt_a life_n than_o a_o life_n in_o a_o natural_a body_n and_o that_o in_o multitude_n of_o circumstance_n it_o must_v needs_o differ_v from_o it_o perhaps_o in_o so_o many_o that_o it_o may_v be_v as_o inconceivable_a to_o we_o now_o as_o the_o future_a happiness_n of_o the_o saint_n and_o yet_o this_o refine_a and_o exalt_a life_n be_v no_o good_a argument_n that_o it_o be_v not_o purchase_v by_o our_o saviour_n death_n nor_o that_o such_o his_o death_n have_v no_o eye_n to_o the_o law_n of_o work_n in_o such_o purchase_n and_o so_o say_v we_o though_o the_o happiness_n of_o the_o bless_a be_v great_a vast_o great_a than_o what_o be_v by_o the_o law_n of_o work_n promise_v to_o adam_n upon_o his_o obedience_n yet_o that_o can_v never_o make_v it_o out_o that_o such_o happiness_n be_v not_o the_o purchase_n of_o our_o saviour_n obedience_n or_o that_o such_o his_o obedience_n be_v not_o a_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n of_o work_n it_o may_v indeed_o convince_v we_o of_o the_o supereminent_a dignity_n of_o his_o person_n and_o of_o the_o inconceivable_a value_n of_o that_o reward_n which_o by_o be_v purchase_v by_o he_o derive_v such_o its_o value_n from_o such_o his_o dignity_n as_o we_o observe_v before_o and_o which_o be_v direct_o to_o our_o present_a purpose_n it_o may_v furthermore_o convince_v we_o that_o the_o reward_n of_o believer_n be_v the_o reward_n of_o their_o saviour_n obedience_n make_v over_o to_o they_o but_o not_o a_o reward_n that_o do_v or_o can_v belong_v to_o their_o own_o at_o the_o very_o best_a imperfect_a righteousness_n i_o know_v very_o well_o that_o this_o doctrine_n be_v deny_v by_o many_o divine_n and_o other_o learned_a man_n and_o those_o too_o not_o only_o such_o who_o do_v utter_o deny_v that_o god_n bestow_v salvation_n upon_o man_n in_o consideration_n of_o their_o saviour_n merit_n and_o purchase_n but_o even_o by_o the_o generality_n of_o those_o who_o yet_o do_v ascribe_v the_o salvation_n of_o man_n to_o such_o purchase_n and_o merit_n what_o reason_n they_o offer_v for_o such_o their_o denial_n we_o shall_v speak_v to_o hereafter_o but_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n we_o shall_v go_v on_o to_o make_v good_a the_o imputation_n against_o each_o party_n that_o deny_v it_o and_o after_o that_o shall_v show_v that_o the_o reason_n of_o such_o their_o denial_n have_v not_o that_o weight_n which_o they_o seem_v to_o have_v 1._o and_o first_o we_o shall_v speak_v to_o they_o who_o do_v not_o bare_o acknowledge_v but_o even_o contend_v that_o the_o do_v maintain_v that_o in_o order_n to_o man_n redemption_n our_o saviour_n die_v for_o man_n sin_n and_o that_o by_o such_o his_o death_n he_o puchase_v for_o man_n a_o freedom_n from_o that_o vengeance_n which_o be_v the_o just_a wage_n of_o such_o sin_n now_o what_o they_o so_o maintain_v we_o believe_v to_o be_v true_a and_o be_v ready_a to_o join_v hand_n with_o they_o to_o make_v it_o good_a against_o all_o the_o adversary_n of_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n so_o far_o therefore_o we_o be_v agree_v but_o then_o it_o may_v be_v demand_v how_o our_o saviour_n can_v possible_o suffer_v for_o man_n sin_n if_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n be_v not_o impute_v to_o he_o for_o in_o order_n to_o his_o suffering_n for_o man_n sin_n he_o must_v take_v upon_o he_o such_o sin_n and_o the_o take_n upon_o he_o man_n sin_n be_v the_o have_v man_n sin_n account_v as_o his_o own_o that_o be_v in_o effect_n and_o in_o other_o word_n the_o have_v man_n sin_n impute_v to_o he_o and_o then_o on_o the_o other_o side_n how_o can_v man_n have_v any_o pretence_n of_o benefit_n from_o his_o saviour_n suffering_n if_o the_o merit_n of_o such_o suffering_n be_v not_o impute_v to_o man_n for_o without_o such_o imputation_n the_o merit_n be_v it_o what_o it_o will_v can_v only_o belong_v to_o the_o saviour_n himself_o it_o be_v evident_a therefore_o by_o what_o have_v be_v say_v in_o short_a but_o may_v be_v make_v out_o in_o more_o word_n that_o they_o who_o assert_v the_o expiation_n of_o sin_n by_o our_o saviour_n suffering_n in_o man_n stead_n do_v therefore_o entitle_v man_n to_o the_o benefit_n of_o such_o expiation_n because_o man_n sin_n be_v impute_v to_o his_o saviour_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o saviour_n suffering_n at_o least_o impute_v to_o man._n thing_n therefore_o impute_v to_o man_n as_o man_n sin_n may_v be_v impute_v to_o his_o saviour_n or_o why_o the_o eternal_a happiness_n which_o be_v assign_v as_o the_o reward_n of_o obedience_n by_o the_o law_n may_v not_o be_v bestow_v upon_o man_n in_o consideration_n that_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o saviour_n obedience_n be_v impute_v to_o man_n as_o well_o as_o a_o release_n from_o punishment_n may_v be_v grant_v to_o man_n in_o consideration_n that_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o saviour_n punishment_n be_v impute_v to_o man_n for_o there_o be_v the_o very_a selfsame_a reason_n why_o the_o obedience_n of_o our_o saviour_n shall_v be_v impute_v to_o man_n in_o order_n to_o man_n salvation_n that_o there_o be_v that_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n shall_v be_v impute_v to_o our_o saviour_n in_o order_n to_o law_n which_o they_o have_v incur_v who_o transgress_v the_o law_n be_v that_o he_o who_o make_v such_o a_o purchase_n must_v be_v one_o of_o the_o same_o kind_a with_o they_o to_o who_o the_o law_n qualification_n be_v fit_v for_o the_o effectual_a enterprise_v and_o bring_v to_o pass_v those_o other_o thing_n which_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a for_o the_o purchase_n of_o the_o release_v speak_v of_o 2._o for_o second_o the_o next_o qualification_n of_o he_o who_o be_v fit_v for_o the_o purchase_n of_o a_o release_n from_o the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n be_v that_o he_o must_v be_v a_o innocent_a man._n he_o be_v to_o be_v a_o lamb_n without_o spot_n or_o blemish_n and_o to_o answer_v to_o the_o paschal_n lamb_n which_o in_o this_o as_o in_o several_a other_o thing_n be_v a_o this_o world_n be_v sinner_n and_o the_o evidence_n for_o the_o last_o be_v because_o all_o man_n in_o this_o world_n be_v mortal_a now_o as_o sin_n be_v a_o infallible_a confutation_n of_o a_o perfect_a holiness_n so_o mortality_n be_v a_o infallible_a confutation_n of_o a_o perfect_a happiness_n we_o be_v therefore_o at_o last_o arrive_v thus_o far_o that_o no_o man_n shall_v arrive_v at_o
