they_o be_v not_o principled_a by_o grace_n be_v only_o evil_a and_o that_o continual_o with_o the_o vanity_n of_o our_o word_n yea_o with_o a_o mixture_n of_o much_o corrupt_a communication_n all_o which_o be_v defile_v and_o have_v defilement_n attend_v of_o they_o i_o confess_v i_o know_v not_o that_o my_o heart_n and_o soul_n abhor_v any_o eruption_n of_o the_o diabolical_a pride_n of_o man_n like_o that_o whereby_o they_o reproach_n and_o scoff_n at_o the_o deep_a humiliation_n and_o self-abasements_a which_o poor_a sinner_n can_v attain_v unto_o in_o their_o prayer_n confession_n and_o supplication_n alas_o that_o our_o nature_n shall_v be_v capable_a of_o such_o a_o contempt_n of_o the_o holiness_n of_o god_n such_o a_o ignorance_n of_o the_o infinite_a distance_n that_o be_v in_o the_o thought_n of_o our_o mind_n or_o outward_a action_n if_o we_o will_v preserve_v ourselves_o from_o multiply_v our_o defilement_n if_o we_o will_v continual_o be_v perfect_v the_o work_n of_o holiness_n in_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o lord_n it_o be_v this_o we_o must_v set_v ourselves_o against_o the_o tree_n must_v be_v make_v good_a if_o we_o expect_v good_a fruit_n and_o the_o evil_a root_n must_v be_v dig_v up_o or_o evil_a fruit_n will_v be_v bring_v forth_o that_o be_v our_o main_a design_n shall_v be_v to_o crucify_v and_o destroy_v the_o body_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o flesh_n that_o be_v in_o we_o the_o remainder_n of_o the_o flesh_n or_o indwelling_a sin_n by_o the_o way_n and_o mean_n which_o shall_v afterward_o be_v declare_v 4_o hence_o also_o be_v manifest_v our_o own_o soul_n sect._n 13_o and_o indeed_o it_o be_v to_o be_v fear_v that_o the_o nature_n of_o this_o duty_n be_v not_o sufficient_o understand_v or_o not_o sufficient_o consider_v man_n look_v upon_o it_o as_o a_o easy_a task_n and_o that_o which_o will_v be_v carry_v on_o with_o a_o little_a diligence_n and_o ordinary_a attendance_n but_o do_v we_o think_v it_o be_v for_o nothing_o that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n express_v the_o duty_n of_o oppose_a sin_n and_o weaken_v its_o power_n by_o mortification_n kill_v or_o put_v to_o death_n be_v there_o not_o somewhat_o peculiar_a herein_o beyond_o any_o other_o act_n or_o duty_n of_o our_o life_n certain_o there_o be_v intimate_v a_o great_a contest_v of_o sin_n for_o the_o preservation_n of_o its_o life_n every_o thing_n will_v do_v its_o utmost_a to_o preserve_v its_o life_n and_o be_v so_o will_v sin_n do_v also_o and_o if_o it_o be_v not_o constant_o pursue_v with_o diligence_n and_o holy_a violence_n it_o will_v escape_v our_o assault_n let_v no_o man_n think_v to_o kill_v sin_n with_o few_o easy_a or_o gentle_a stroke_n he_o who_o have_v once_o smite_v a_o serpent_n if_o he_o follow_v not_o on_o his_o blow_n until_o it_o be_v slay_v may_v repent_v that_o ever_o he_o begin_v the_o quarrel_n and_o so_o will_v he_o who_o undertake_v to_o deal_v with_o sin_n and_o pursue_v it_o not_o constant_o to_o death_n sin_n sense_n of_o pain_n and_o trouble_v hence_o it_o be_v compare_v to_o the_o cut_n off_o of_o right_a hand_n and_o the_o pluck_n out_o of_o right_a eye_n lust_n that_o pretend_v to_o be_v useful_a to_o the_o state_n and_o condition_n of_o man_n that_o be_v pleasant_a and_o satisfactory_a to_o the_o flesh_n will_v not_o be_v mortify_v without_o such_o a_o violence_n as_o the_o whole_a soul_n shall_v be_v deep_o sensible_a of_o and_o sundry_a other_o thing_n may_v be_v insist_v on_o to_o manifest_v how_o man_n deceive_v themselves_o if_o they_o suppose_v this_o duty_n of_o mortification_n be_v that_o which_o they_o may_v carry_v on_o in_o a_o negligent_a careless_a course_n and_o manner_n be_v there_o no_o danger_n in_o this_o warfare_n no_o watchfulness_n no_o diligence_n require_v of_o we_o be_v it_o so_o easy_a a_o thing_n to_o kill_v a_o enemy_n who_o have_v so_o many_o advantage_n of_o force_n and_o fraud_n wherefore_o if_o we_o take_v care_n of_o our_o soul_n we_o be_v to_o attend_v unto_o this_o duty_n with_o that_o care_n diligence_n watchfulness_n and_o earnest_a contention_n of_o spirit_n which_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o do_v require_v sect._n 14_o and_o moreover_o there_o be_v no_o less_o fatal_a mistake_v where_o we_o make_v the_o object_n of_o this_o duty_n to_o be_v only_o some_o particular_a lust_n or_o the_o fruit_n of_o they_o in_o actual_a sin_n as_o be_v before_o observe_v this_o be_v the_o way_n with_o many_o they_o will_v make_v head_n against_o some_o sin_n which_o on_o one_o account_n or_o other_o they_o find_v themselves_o most_o concern_v in_o but_o if_o they_o will_v observe_v their_o course_n they_o shall_v find_v with_o how_o little_a success_n they_o do_v it_o for_o the_o most_o part_n sin_n get_v ground_n upon_o they_o and_o they_o continual_o groan_v under_o the_o power_n of_o its_o victory_n and_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o they_o mistake_v their_o business_n contest_v against_o particular_a sin_n be_v only_o to_o comply_v with_o light_n and_o conviction_n mortification_n with_o a_o design_n for_o holiness_n respect_v the_o body_n of_o sin_n the_o root_n and_o all_o its_o branch_n the_o first_o will_v miscarry_v and_o the_o latter_a will_v be_v successful_a and_o herein_o consist_v the_o difference_n between_o that_o mortification_n which_o man_n be_v put_v upon_o by_o conviction_n from_o the_o
