people_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o for_o the_o house_n of_o israel_n because_o they_o be_v fall_v by_o the_o sword_n there_o be_v no_o maxim_n so_o general_a or_o so_o constant_a but_o that_o it_o may_v allow_v of_o some_o exception_n and_o therefore_o though_o the_o wiseman_n after_o all_o his_o experience_n his_o most_o search_a observation_n and_o the_o great_a prospect_n he_o have_v of_o the_o order_n of_o second_o cause_n and_o the_o temper_n of_o man_n mind_n do_v pronounce_v there_o be_v nothing_o new_a under_o the_o sun_n yet_o this_o day_n and_o that_o never-enough-lamented_n villainy_n we_o now_o remember_v must_v put_v in_o for_o a_o exception_n from_o that_o rule_n which_o do_v indeed_o exceed_v all_o the_o common_a measure_n of_o wickedness_n so_o far_o that_o as_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o any_o history_n like_o it_o so_o when_o the_o world_n be_v some_o age_n old_a if_o such_o a_o action_n be_v not_o a_o omen_n that_o its_o end_n be_v near_o this_o will_v scarce_o gain_v credit_n but_o be_v look_v on_o as_o the_o tragical_a contrivance_n of_o some_o deeply-melancho_o wit_n some_o prince_n have_v be_v by_o their_o prevail_a conqueror_n put_v to_o death_n other_o have_v be_v assassinate_v by_o their_o own_o subject_n but_o to_o see_v a_o sovereign_a prince_n bring_v to_o the_o pageantry_n of_o a_o mock-trial_n and_o by_o a_o court_n make_v up_o of_o his_o own_o subject_n on_o a_o pretence_n of_o justice_n sentence_v to_o lose_v his_o life_n not_o in_o the_o corner_n of_o some_o private_a prison_n but_o in_o the_o chief_a city_n of_o his_o dominion_n and_o in_o the_o most_o eminent_a place_n of_o it_o be_v a_o evidence_n of_o the_o degeneracy_n of_o the_o age_n we_o live_v in_o that_o will_v dare_v to_o act_v what_o in_o former_a age_n none_o will_v have_v think_v on_o what_o phocas_n do_v to_o the_o emperor_n mauritius_n be_v the_o near_a parallel_n to_o it_o which_o history_n offer_v but_o come_v far_o short_a of_o match_v it_o for_o neither_o be_v the_o right_n of_o the_o roman_a emperor_n derive_v by_o so_o clear_a a_o title_n nor_o so_o long_a a_o descent_n as_o our_o royal_a martyr_n be_v and_o so_o no_o wonder_n if_o those_o who_o rise_v by_o the_o sword_n do_v also_o fall_v by_o it_o nor_o do_v phocas_n so_o far_o affront_v justice_n as_o to_o pretend_v to_o put_v his_o master_n to_o a_o trial_n and_o mauritius_n have_v by_o so_o base_a a_o avarice_n expose_v so_o many_o of_o his_o soldier_n to_o be_v cut_v off_o and_o use_v the_o rest_n so_o ill_o that_o no_o wonder_n they_o in_o their_o fury_n against_o he_o be_v guilty_a of_o so_o foul_a a_o conspiracy_n but_o how_o much_o more_o exquisite_o wicked_a be_v the_o crime_n we_o now_o remember_v when_o a_o prince_n who_o right_n be_v devolve_v on_o he_o by_o so_o many_o title_n the_o british_a the_o saxon_a the_o norman_a and_o the_o scotish_n race_n have_v all_o unite_a in_o he_o who_o have_v also_o in_o his_o whole_a government_n show_v that_o deep_a sense_n of_o religion_n with_o a_o most_o tender_a regard_n to_o the_o good_a and_o quiet_a of_o his_o subject_n be_v against_o all_o the_o rule_n of_o justice_n and_o yet_o upon_o some_o colour_n of_o it_o bring_v to_o so_o public_a a_o death_n but_o as_o phocas_n as_o base_o treacherous_a and_o wicked_a as_o he_o be_v be_v most_o ignominious_o and_o shameful_o court_v by_o pope_n gregory_n the_o great_a who_o write_v to_o he_o in_o a_o stile_n of_o so_o mean_a and_o servile_a flattery_n that_o it_o just_o stain_v all_o the_o other_o good_a quality_n of_o that_o prelate_n and_o his_o successor_n boniface_n do_v yet_o more_o mean_o comply_v and_o get_v himself_o declare_v by_o he_o the_o universal_a bishop_n of_o the_o church_n from_o which_o we_o may_v judge_n of_o that_o see_v by_o what_o art_n they_o be_v resolve_v to_o rise_v and_o to_o make_v use_n of_o the_o worst_a of_o man_n if_o they_o can_v but_o serve_v their_o turn_n so_o in_o this_o regicide_n religion_n be_v vouch_v and_o god_n appeal_v to_o and_o indeed_o it_o be_v no_o wonder_n that_o these_o treat_v his_o vicegerent_n so_o coarse_o that_o make_v so_o bold_a with_o god_n himself_o as_o to_o pretend_v he_o be_v their_o patron_n and_o warrant_n in_o what_o they_o do_v and_o perhaps_o if_o these_o actor_n have_v as_o full_o comply_v with_o he_o that_o pretend_v to_o be_v christ_n vicegerent_n as_o phocas_n do_v he_o have_v as_o plain_o justify_v their_o action_n as_o gregory_n and_o boniface_n do_v which_o may_v have_v be_v far_o rather_o look_v for_o now_o after_o all_o the_o opinion_n some_o of_o their_o emissary_n have_v broach_v of_o murder_a prince_n then_o at_o that_o time_n when_o their_o corruption_n be_v but_o a-forming_a and_o their_o ambition_n be_v beginning_n to_o fly_v at_o supremacy_n and_o universal_a jurisdiction_n but_o be_v all_o our_o work_n only_o to_o reflect_v with_o some_o horror_n on_o this_o infamous_a action_n have_v we_o no_o other_o concern_v in_o this_o day_n the_o collect_n tell_v we_o that_o the_o sin_n of_o this_o nation_n have_v be_v the_o cause_n which_o have_v bring_v this_o heavy_a judgement_n upon_o we_o we_o also_o pray_v that_o this_o our_o land_n be_v free_v from_o the_o vengeance_n of_o his_o blood_n and_o indeed_o have_v not_o our_o sin_n be_v great_a so_o that_o the_o cup_n of_o our_o iniquity_n be_v quite_o full_a it_o can_v not_o have_v run_v over_o in_o a_o tract_n of_o a_o long_a civil_a war_n which_o bring_v along_o with_o it_o so_o much_o bloodshed_n rapine_n and_o contempt_n of_o all_o thing_n sacred_a and_o humane_a and_o all_o be_v complete_v in_o this_o crime_n beyond_o which_o wickedness_n can_v go_v no_o high_o those_o who_o be_v so_o noble_o and_o generous_o loyal_a as_o to_o serve_v his_o late_a majesty_n of_o most_o bless_a memory_n do_v with_o a_o just_a glory_v rejoice_v in_o the_o reflection_n on_o their_o past_a service_n yet_o let_v i_o crave_v leave_n to_o offer_v even_o to_o they_o how_o far_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v concern_v in_o mourning_n and_o fast_v on_o this_o occasion_n it_o be_v our_o contempt_n of_o god_n and_o religion_n our_o be_v pure_o formal_a in_o our_o religious_a worship_n our_o forget_v to_o acknowledge_v god_n the_o author_n of_o our_o peace_n and_o plenty_n our_o abuse_v these_o by_o excess_n and_o riot_n that_o bring_v on_o those_o sad_a and_o unheard-of_a judgement_n among_o the_o much-abused_n word_n of_o the_o late_a time_n be_v incendiary_n and_o incendiarism_n but_o those_o be_v the_o great_a incendiary_n that_o kindle_v god_n wrath_n and_o it_o be_v from_o such_o that_o we_o may_v just_o fear_v the_o like_a or_o rather_o severe_a judgement_n if_o our_o sin_n now_o be_v great_a than_o they_o be_v then_o therefore_o the_o lament_a and_o repent_v of_o these_o sin_n by_o which_o what_o be_v past_a may_v be_v forgive_v and_o what_o may_v be_v fear_v be_v prevent_v be_v the_o proper_a work_n of_o this_o day_n i_o come_v now_o to_o consider_v my_o text_n and_o what_o reflection_n may_v be_v draw_v from_o it_o though_o in_o a_o case_n so_o much_o without_o a_o precedent_n as_o this_o be_v it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v imagine_v that_o a_o text_n whole_o pertinent_a can_v be_v pick_v up_o but_o we_o shall_v make_v the_o most_o of_o this_o we_o can_v and_o consider_v three_o thing_n in_o it_o first_o this_o king_n who_o death_n be_v so_o much_o lament_v and_o in_o what_o particular_n he_o be_v a_o parallel_n and_o in_o what_o not_o of_o our_o royal_a martyr_n second_o what_o reason_n david_n with_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o people_n of_o israel_n have_v to_o mourn_v for_o his_o death_n and_o how_o far_o that_o agree_v with_o our_o case_n three_o how_o they_o express_v their_o sorrow_n and_o how_o far_o their_o example_n call_v on_o we_o to_o imitate_v it_o for_o the_o first_o it_o be_v saul_n the_o son_n of_o kish_n who_o god_n have_v by_o the_o hand_n of_o samuel_n design_v to_o be_v king_n of_o
leave_v no_o mean_a unessay_v to_o satisfy_v even_o all_o their_o jealousy_n and_o fear_n and_o therefore_o in_o a_o paper_n under_o his_o own_o pen_n he_o write_v these_o word_n we_o do_v conjure_v all_o our_o good_a subject_n of_o that_o our_o native_a kingdom_n by_o the_o long_a happy_a and_o uninterrupted_a government_n of_o we_o and_o our_o royal_a progenitor_n over_o they_o by_o the_o memory_n of_o these_o many_o large_a and_o public_a blessing_n they_o enjoy_v under_o our_o dear_a father_n by_o these_o ample_a favour_n and_o benefit_n they_o have_v receive_v from_o we_o not_o to_o suffer_v themselves_o to_o be_v mislead_v and_o corrupt_v in_o their_o affection_n and_o duty_n to_o we_o by_o the_o cunning_a malice_n and_o industry_n of_o these_o incendiary_n and_o when_o he_o hear_v these_o dismal_a news_n of_o that_o most_o barbarous_a rebellion_n in_o ireland_n with_o what_o zeal_n he_o set_v about_o the_o send_v relief_n to_o they_o may_v appear_v from_o the_o follow_a word_n of_o one_o of_o his_o letter_n to_o one_o in_o his_o native_a kingdom_n after_o he_o have_v lament_v the_o misery_n and_o affliction_n to_o which_o his_o good_a subject_n in_o ireland_n be_v reduce_v through_o the_o inhuman_a and_o unheard-of_a cruelty_n of_o the_o rebel_n there_o and_o have_v regret_v the_o delay_n of_o send_v supply_n to_o they_o through_o the_o distraction_n of_o england_n he_o add_v so_o that_o if_o some_o extraordinary_a course_n be_v not_o take_v for_o their_o present_a supply_n it_o be_v not_o like_o their_o misery_n will_v end_v soon_o their_o day_n therefore_o he_o require_v they_o to_o haste_v the_o send_n over_o their_o force_n assure_v they_o that_o if_o the_o parliament_n of_o england_n do_v not_o punctual_o pay_v they_o he_o will_v engage_v his_o own_o revenue_n rather_o than_o delay_v so_o good_a and_o so_o necessary_a a_o work_n and_o that_o he_o will_v issue_v out_o such_o warrant_n under_o the_o great_a seal_n of_o england_n and_o grant_v all_o their_o other_o desire_n which_o in_o reason_n can_v be_v demand_v for_o the_o advancement_n of_o it_o and_o after_o that_o see_v that_o work_n go_v on_o slow_o he_o be_v resolve_v to_o have_v go_v in_o person_n to_o have_v carry_v it_o on_o more_o vigorous_o and_o to_o have_v hazard_v himself_o that_o he_o may_v preserve_v his_o people_n but_o find_v that_o resolution_n give_v great_a jealousy_n to_o those_o who_o censure_v he_o whatever_o he_o do_v he_o give_v it_o over_o how_o careful_a he_o be_v to_o prevent_v a_o rupture_n in_o this_o nation_n not_o only_o his_o great_a concession_n prove_v but_o his_o constant_a offer_n of_o treaty_n even_o when_o thing_n go_v prosperous_o with_o he_o do_v demonstrate_v therefore_o reflect_v on_o this_o in_o a_o paper_n under_o his_o own_o pen_n he_o write_v we_o deny_v not_o any_o thing_n but_o what_o by_o the_o know_a law_n be_v unquestionable_o our_o own_o we_o earnest_o desire_v and_o press_v a_o treaty_n that_o so_o we_o may_v but_o know_v at_o what_o price_n we_o may_v prevent_v the_o misery_n and_o desolation_n that_o be_v threaten_v but_o this_o be_v absolute_o and_o scornful_o refuse_v and_o reject_v and_o in_o a_o message_n which_o though_o it_o be_v never_o send_v yet_o remain_v under_o his_o hand_n he_o write_v these_o word_n and_o now_o he_o conjure_v his_o two_o house_n of_o parliament_n as_o they_o be_v englishman_n christian_n and_o lover_n of_o peace_n by_o the_o duty_n they_o owe_v their_o king_n and_o by_o the_o bowel_n of_o compassion_n they_o have_v towards_o their_o fellow-subject_n that_o they_o will_v accept_v of_o these_o offer_n whereby_o the_o joyful_a news_n of_o peace_n may_v be_v again_o restore_v to_o this_o languish_a kingdom_n and_o thus_o far_o the_o parallel_n of_o saul_n and_o our_o martyr_a king_n have_v hold_v good_a but_o now_o they_o must_v depart_v from_o one_o another_o and_o it_o shall_v appear_v how_o our_o late_a sovereign_n be_v on_o many_o account_n huge_o preferable_a to_o the_o king_n lament_v in_o my_o text_n yet_o i_o shall_v name_v one_o particular_a in_o which_o saul_n have_v the_o better_a of_o he_o saul_n have_v by_o his_o rash_a oath_n endanger_v ionathan_n life_n which_o he_o seem_v resolve_v to_o execute_v but_o the_o earnest_a intercession_n of_o his_o people_n prevail_v on_o he_o to_o change_v these_o his_o severe_a and_o cruel_a resolution_n but_o alas_o our_o martyr_n have_v firm_o resolve_v to_o save_v a_o person_n he_o judge_v innocent_a and_o clear_a of_o the_o treason_n charge_v on_o he_o do_v to_o comply_v with_o the_o most_o press_a desire_n of_o his_o people_n consent_n to_o the_o put_v he_o to_o death_n we_o have_v see_v his_o fault_n and_o the_o specious_a colour_n that_o lead_v he_o to_o it_o next_o let_v i_o lay_v before_o you_o his_o repentance_n express_v by_o himself_o in_o a_o letter_n anno_fw-la 1642._o one_o thing_n more_o which_o but_o for_o the_o messenger_n be_v too_o much_o to_o trust_v to_o paper_n the_o fail_v to_o one_o friend_n have_v indeed_o go_v very_o near_o i_o wherefore_o i_o be_o resolve_v that_o no_o consideration_n whatsoever_o shall_v ever_o make_v i_o do_v the_o like_a upon_o this_o ground_n i_o be_o certain_a that_o god_n have_v either_o so_o total_o forgive_v i_o that_o he_o will_v still_o bless_v this_o good_a cause_n in_o my_o hand_n or_o that_o all_o my_o punishment_n shall_v be_v in_o this_o world_n which_o without_o perform_v what_o i_o have_v resolve_v i_o can_v flatter_v myself_o will_v end_v here_o and_o he_o end_v that_o letter_n thus_o beside_o generosity_n to_o which_o i_o pretend_v a_o little_a my_o conscience_n will_v make_v i_o stick_v to_o my_o friend_n how_o deep_o his_o sense_n of_o that_o sin_n how_o great_a his_o apprehension_n of_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n and_o how_o true_a his_o notion_n of_o repentance_n be_v can_v but_o easy_o appear_v upon_o the_o first_o hear_v these_o word_n but_o for_o this_o one_o advantage_n the_o king_n in_o my_o text_n have_v of_o the_o king_n of_o the_o day_n we_o shall_v find_v many_o great_a and_o noble_a character_n in_o which_o he_o excel_v he_o and_o first_o saul_n pretend_v some_o zeal_n for_o god_n he_o build_v a_o altar_n for_o he_o he_o honour_v samuel_n his_o prophet_n he_o go_v and_o destroy_v the_o amalekite_n but_o when_o it_o may_v serve_v his_o turn_n he_o do_v not_o stick_v to_o disobey_v god_n he_o save_v agag_n and_o much_o of_o the_o spoil_n of_o the_o amalekite_n pretend_v it_o be_v preserve_v for_o offer_v sacrifice_n he_o have_v not_o patience_n to_o stay_v for_o samuel_n but_o do_v sacrilegious_o offer_v the_o sacrifice_n himself_o but_o our_o martyr_n do_v not_o only_o express_v great_a regard_n to_o god_n in_o his_o prosperity_n by_o many_o high_a mark_n of_o his_o zeal_n and_o constant_a attendance_n on_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n his_o great_a esteem_n of_o all_o worthy_a and_o deserve_a churchman_n and_o his_o royal_a bounty_n to_o the_o advance_v all_o pious_a and_o religious_a purpose_n but_o by_o his_o constant_a and_o firm_a adhere_n to_o those_o right_n of_o the_o church_n and_o to_o all_o he_o judge_v himself_o bind_v in_o conscience_n to_o maintain_v therefore_o it_o be_v that_o he_o do_v choose_v to_o bear_v the_o great_a danger_n rather_o than_o sin_n against_o his_o conscience_n when_o the_o violence_n of_o his_o native_a subject_n against_o the_o order_n of_o bishop_n have_v bring_v thing_n to_o that_o pass_n that_o it_o can_v not_o be_v maintain_v without_o much_o blood_n and_o confusion_n he_o judge_v that_o god_n love_v mercy_n better_a than_o sacrifice_n do_v give_v way_n to_o their_o fury_n but_o with_o that_o tender_a care_n that_o become_v a_o man_n of_o so_o severe_a and_o exact_a a_o conscience_n and_o this_o shall_v appear_v by_o some_o evidence_n i_o go_v to_o mention_v have_v sign_v a_o paper_n of_o concession_n wherein_o he_o have_v use_v the_o word_n it_o please_v he_o reflect_v on_o the_o importance_n of_o that_o he_o write_v the_o follow_a word_n in_o a_o letter_n to_o he_o that_o have_v the_o manage_n of_o that_o business_n i_o must_v desire_v you_o to_o alter_v one_o word_n that_o i_o shall_v not_o be_v think_v to_o desire_v the_o abolish_n of_o that_o in_o scotland_n which_o i_o approve_v and_o maintain_v in_o england_n now_o the_o word_n content_n express_v enough_o my_o consent_n to_o have_v they_o surcease_v for_o the_o present_a but_o the_o word_n please_v methinks_v import_v as_o much_o as_o if_o i_o desire_v they_o to_o take_v they_o away_o or_o at_o least_o that_o i_o be_v well_o please_v they_o shall_v do_v so_o but_o i_o leave_v it_o to_o your_o order_n so_o that_o you_o make_v it_o be_v clear_o understand_v that_o though_o i_o permit_v yet_o i_o will_v be_v better_o please_v they_o let_v they_o alone_o and_o in_o the_o
the_o eternal_a wisdom_n of_o that_o architectonical_a mind_n will_v in_o due_a time_n bring_v forth_o and_o in_o the_o mean_a while_n rest_v satisfy_v in_o all_o he_o do_v commend_v thing_n in_o our_o prayer_n to_o he_o and_o do_v every_o thing_n that_o befit_v our_o condition_n for_o preserve_a peace_n order_n and_o religion_n but_o go_v no_o further_a 20._o for_o the_o wrath_n of_o man_n do_v not_o work_v out_o the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n and_o thus_o conscience_n fix_v our_o subjection_n on_o the_o unshaken_a basis_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o confidence_n in_o god_n bind_v we_o by_o the_o strong_a tie_n to_o our_o duty_n 3._o a_o three_o argument_n conscience_n offer_v to_o oblige_v we_o to_o be_v subject_a and_o quiet_a be_v the_o servant_n and_o extend_a charity_n it_o possess_v we_o with_o to_o all_o mankind_n which_o must_v needs_o hold_v we_o from_o engage_v in_o course_n that_o will_v prove_v destructive_a to_o a_o great_a part_n of_o it_o where_o we_o consider_v what_o the_o mischief_n of_o rebellion_n and_o civil_a war_n be_v what_o dissolution_n of_o government_n and_o confusion_n of_o justice_n it_o bring_v after_o it_o how_o much_o blood_n and_o rapine_n oppression_n plunder_n and_o profanation_n of_o the_o most_o sacred_a thing_n be_v the_o certain_a effect_n of_o commotion_n if_o they_o be_v long-lived_a what_o lover_n of_o mankind_n or_o person_n true_o charitable_a will_v engage_v in_o course_n so_o black_a who_o catastrophe_n may_v prove_v so_o tragical_a and_o run_v far_o beyond_o what_o be_v at_o first_o design_v and_o produce_v effect_n far_o more_o mischievous_a than_o those_o that_o be_v complain_v of_o how_o many_o dispeopled_a city_n depopulate_v and_o burn_v village_n what_o tear_n of_o widow_n and_o orphan_n and_o of_o age_a person_n bereave_v of_o their_o child_n who_o be_v the_o comfort_n and_o support_v of_o their_o age_n must_v follow_v on_o such_o course_n when_o the_o field_n be_v cover_v with_o the_o carcase_n of_o the_o dead_a and_o the_o scaffold_n smoke_n with_o the_o blood_n of_o innocent_n and_o that_o not_o only_o with_o common_a gore_n but_o royal_a and_o sacred_a blood_n a_o pathetic_a and_o florid_n eloquence_n can_v easy_o manage_v this_o theme_n with_o those_o advantage_n as_o to_o raise_v horror_n in_o all_o at_o course_n so_o barbarous_a and_o unchristian_a which_o the_o common_a sentiment_n of_o humanity_n will_v make_v those_o of_o soft_a and_o relent_a temper_n hate_v much_o more_o the_o meek_a and_o peaceable_a christian_n and_o that_o these_o be_v not_o the_o melancholy_a representation_n of_o a_o trouble_a fancy_n a_o little_a reflection_n on_o what_o we_o have_v see_v and_o know_v and_o a_o penetrate_a prospect_n into_o what_o may_v be_v before_o we_o will_v easy_o make_v out_o to_o all_o consider_v mind_n therefore_o strong_a and_o fervent_a charity_n to_o mankind_n will_v prove_v a_o certain_a curb_n to_o repress_v new_a attempt_n at_o those_o disorder_n the_o effect_n whereof_o be_v not_o yet_o old_a nor_o out_o of_o mind_n and_o here_o again_o conscience_n oblige_v we_o to_o be_v subject_a 4._o the_o last_o consideration_n which_o i_o shall_v propose_v by_o which_o conscience_n bind_v we_o to_o subjection_n be_v the_o practice_n and_o example_n of_o our_o great_a master_n 10._o who_o be_v make_v perfect_a through_o suffering_n the_o whole_a course_n of_o his_o life_n be_v a_o perpetual_a tract_n of_o do_v good_a and_o bear_a ill_n he_o pay_v the_o tribute_n when_o demand_v and_o charge_v the_o jew_n to_o render_v to_o caesar_n the_o thing_n that_o be_v caesar_n 21._o and_o when_o he_o be_v to_o lay_v down_o his_o life_n for_o we_o he_o submit_v himself_o patient_o not_o only_o to_o the_o will_n of_o his_o heavenly_a father_n but_o to_o the_o civil_a power_n which_o then_o govern_v in_o judaea_n though_o he_o as_o the_o heir_n of_o all_o thing_n may_v have_v claim_v the_o empire_n of_o the_o world_n as_o his_o right_n yet_o since_o he_o humble_v himself_o so_o as_o to_o be_v bear_v in_o the_o low_a character_n of_o a_o subject_a he_o in_o that_o as_o in_o all_o other_o thing_n become_v a_o perfect_a pattern_n to_o we_o of_o all_o righteousness_n when_o the_o accurse_a band_n come_v out_o against_o he_o though_o he_o can_v have_v bring_v down_o legion_n of_o angel_n for_o his_o relief_n yet_o he_o not_o only_o submit_v himself_o to_o they_o but_o both_o reject_v and_o reprove_v s._n peter_n too_o forward_a zeal_n and_o tell_v he_o 5._o that_o such_o as_o draw_v the_o sword_n shall_v perish_v by_o the_o sword_n and_o when_o the_o ill-guided_n fervour_n of_o that_o great_a apostle_n have_v mislead_v he_o to_o the_o excess_n of_o smite_v with_o the_o sword_n our_o saviour_n express_v his_o displeasure_n at_o it_o by_o his_o miraculous_a piece_v the_o ear_n again_o with_o the_o maim_a head_n and_o when_o he_o be_v accuse_v to_o pilate_n of_o be_v a_o enemy_n to_o caesar_n and_o pretend_v to_o set_v up_o another_o kingdom_n he_o do_v in_o the_o plain_a stile_n be_v possible_o condemn_v all_o practising_n against_o government_n upon_o pretence_n of_o religion_n 36._o by_o say_v my_o kingdom_n be_v not_o of_o this_o world_n if_o my_o kingdom_n be_v of_o this_o world_n then_o will_v my_o servant_n fight_v that_o i_o shall_v not_o be_v deliver_v to_o the_o jew_n but_o now_o be_v my_o kingdom_n not_o from_o hence_o this_o do_v so_o express_o discharge_v all_o bustle_a and_o fight_v on_o the_o pretence_n of_o religion_n that_o we_o must_v either_o set_v up_o for_o another_o gospel_n or_o utter_o reject_v what_o be_v so_o formal_o condemn_v by_o the_o author_n of_o this_o we_o profess_v to_o believe_v and_o never_o cause_v of_o religion_n be_v of_o so_o great_a concern_v as_o the_o preserve_v the_o head_n and_o author_n of_o it_o who_o with_o equal_a mixture_n of_o injustice_n and_o violence_n his_o enrage_a enemy_n be_v against_o all_o colour_n of_o equity_n and_o contrary_a to_o law_n and_o religion_n drag_v to_o that_o death_n which_o though_o it_o prove_v the_o happy_a thing_n to_o mankind_n yet_o on_o their_o part_n who_o act_v it_o be_v the_o foul_a crime_n the_o sun_n ever_o see_v the_o bless_a apostle_n follow_v their_o master_n step_n in_o this_o as_o in_o all_o other_o thing_n and_o therefore_o have_v learn_v of_o our_o saviour_n that_o lesson_n of_o bear_v the_o cross_n and_o suffer_v patient_o when_o injust_o persecute_v count_v it_o their_o glory_n to_o be_v conformable_a to_o he_o in_o his_o suffering_n and_o indeed_o if_o we_o examine_v the_o nature_n and_o design_n of_o that_o holy_a religion_n our_o saviour_n deliver_v we_o will_v find_v nothing_o more_o diametrical_o opposite_a to_o all_o its_o rule_n than_o the_o distemper_a fury_n of_o these_o misguide_a zealot_n who_o be_v carry_v on_o by_o the_o fierceness_n of_o their_o ungoverned_a passion_n have_v upon_o colour_n of_o religion_n fill_v the_o world_n with_o blood_n and_o confusion_n otherwise_o do_v s._n paul_n teach_v the_o roman_n in_o this_o chapter_n though_o then_o groan_v under_o the_o severe_a rigour_n of_o bondage_n and_o tyranny_n and_o s._n peter_n do_v at_o full_a length_n once_o and_o again_o call_v on_o all_o christian_n to_o prepare_v for_o suffering_n verse_n and_o to_o bear_v they_o patient_o and_o though_o the_o bondage_n of_o the_o slave_n be_v heavy_a and_o high_o contrary_a to_o all_o the_o freedom_n of_o the_o humane_a nature_n yet_o he_o exhort_v they_o to_o bear_v the_o severity_n even_o of_o their_o froward_a and_o unjust_a master_n with_o this_o argument_n that_o christ_n suffer_v for_o they_o leave_v they_o a_o example_n that_o they_o shall_v follow_v his_o step_n from_o these_o unerring_a practice_n and_o precept_n must_v all_o true_a christian_n take_v the_o measure_n of_o their_o action_n and_o the_o rule_n of_o their_o life_n and_o indeed_o the_o first_o convert_v to_o christianity_n embrace_v the_o cross_n and_o bear_v it_o not_o only_o with_o patience_n but_o joy_n and_o as_o long_o as_o christianity_n continue_v pure_a and_o unallay_v this_o doctrine_n of_o patient_a suffering_n be_v not_o only_o a_o big_a and_o empty_a boast_n but_o give_v proof_n of_o its_o reality_n by_o the_o unexemple_v patience_n and_o suffering_n of_o the_o christian_n in_o a_o succession_n of_o three_o age_n and_o ten_o persecution_n these_o bless_a witness_n of_o our_o faith_n be_v burn_v and_o shine_a light_n as_o well_o by_o the_o purity_n of_o their_o life_n as_o by_o the_o stake_n and_o flame_n of_o their_o martyrdom_n nero_n unpal_v they_o and_o clothe_v they_o with_o pitch-coat_n make_v burn_v they_o as_o torch_n in_o the_o night_n but_o these_o fire_n scatter_v the_o darkness_n of_o that_o night_n of_o idolatry_n in_o which_o rome_n lie_v bury_v and_o both_o enlighten_v and_o inflame_v many_o that_o lay_v freeze_a in_o darkness_n it_o be_v the_o astonishment_n of_o
