which Moses the LORDs servant gave you on this side Jordan toward the sun-rising 16 ¶ And they answered Joshua saying All that thou commandest us we will do and whithersoever thou sendest us we will go 17 According as we hearkned unto Moses in all things so will we hearken unto thee onely the LORD thy God be with thee as he was with Moses 18 Whosoever he be that doth rebel against thy commandment and will not hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him he shall be put to death onely be strong and of a good courage CHAP. II. 1 Rahab receiveth and concealeth the two spies sent from Shittim 8 The covenant between her and them 23 Their return and relation ANd Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spie secretly saying Go view the land even Jericho and they went and * Heb. 11.31 Jam. 2.25 came into an harlots house named Rahab and †Heb. lay lodged there 2 And it was told the king of Jericho saying Behold there came men in hitherto night of the children of Israel to search out the countrey 3 And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab saying Bring forth the men that are come to thee which are entred into thine house for they be come to search out all the countrey 4 And the woman took the two men and hid them and said thus There came men unto me but I wist not whence they were 5 And it came to pass about the time of shutting of the gate when it was dark that the men went out whither the men went I wot not pursue after them quickly for ye shall overtake them 6 But she had brought them up to the roof of the house and hid them with the stalks of flax which she had laid in order upon the roof 7 And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan unto the foords and assoon as they which pursued after them were gone out they shut the gate 8 ¶ And before they were said down she came up unto them upon the roof 9 And she said unto the men I know that the LORD hath given you the land and that your terrour is faln upon us and that all the inhabitants of the land †Heb. melt faint because of you 10 For we have heard how the LORD * â—x 14.21 Ch. 4.23 dried up the water of the Red sea for you when you came out of Egypt and what you did unto the two kings of the Amorites that were on the other side Jordan * Numâ— 21.24 Sihon and Oâ— whom ye utterly destroyed 11 And assoon as we had heard these things our hearts did melt neither †Heb. râ—se up did there remain any more courage in any man because of you for the LORD your God he is God in heaven above and in earth beneath 12 Now therefore I pray you swear unto me by the LORD since I have shewed you kindness that ye will also shew kindness unto my fathers house and give me a true token 13 And that ye will save alive my father and my mother and my brethren and my sisters and all that they have and deliver our lives from death 14 And the men answered her Our life †Heb. in stead of you to die for yours if ye utter not this our business And it shall be when the LORD hath given us the land that we will deal kindly and truly with thee 15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window for her house was upon the town-wall and she dwelt upon the wall 16 And she said unto them Get you to the mountain lest the pursuers meet you and hide your selves there three days until the pursuers be returned and alterward may ye go your way 17 And the men said unto her We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear 18 Behold when we come into the land thou shalt binde this line of scarlet threed in the window which thou didst let us down by and thou shalt †Heb. gathâ—r bring thy father and thy mother and thy brethren and all thy fathers houshold home unto thee 19 And it shall be that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street his bloud shall be upon his head and we will be guiltless and whoseover shall be with thee in the house his blood shall be on our head if any hand be upon him 20 And if thou utter this our business then we will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear 21 And she said According unto your words so be it And she sent them away and they departed and she bound the scarlet line in the window 22 And they went and came unto the mountain and abode there three days until the pursuers were returned And the pursuers sought them throughout all the way but found them not 23 ¶ So the two men returned and descended from the mountain and passed over and came to Joshua the son of Nun and told him all things that befel them 24 And they said unto Joshua Truly the LORD hath delivered into our hands all the land for even all the inhabitants of the countrey do †Heb. melt faint because of us CHAP. III. 1 Joshua cometh to Jordan 2 The officers instruct the people for the passage 7 The Lord encourageth Joshua 9 Joshua encourageth the people 14 The waters of Jordan are divided ANd Joshua rose early in the morning and they removed from Shittim and came to Jordan he and all the children of Israel and lodged there before they passed over 2 And it came to pass after three days that the officers went through the host 3 And they commanded the people saying When ye see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God and the priests the Levites bearing it then ye shall remove from your place and go after it 4 Yet there shall be a space between you and it about two thousand cubits by measure come not near unto it that ye may know the way by which ye must go for ye have not passed this way †Heb. since yesterday and the third day heretofore 5 And Joshua said unto the people * Lev. 20.7 Num. 11.18 Chap. 7.13 1 Sam. 16.5 Sanctifie your selves for to morrow the LORD will do wonders among you 6 And Joshua spake unto the priests saying Take up the ark of the covenant and pass over before the people And they took up the ark of the covenant and went before the people 7 ¶ And the LORD said unto Joshua This day will I begin to magnifie thee in the sight of all Israel that they may know that * Chap. 1.5 as I was with Moses so I will be with thee 8 And thou shalt command the priests that bare the ark of the covenant saying When ye are come to the brink of the water of Jordan ye shall stand still in
children into the boats which they had prepared as though they had meant them no hurt 4 Who accepted of it according to the common decree of the city as being desirous to live in peace and suspecting nothing but when they were gone forth into the deep they drowned no less then two hundred of them 5 When Judas heard of this cruelty done unto his countreymen he commanded those that were with him to make them ready 6 And calling upon God the righteous Judge he came against those murderers of his brethren and burnt the haven by night and set the boats on fire and those that fled thither he slew 7 And when the town was shut up he went backward ‖ Or with a purpose to return as if he would return to root out all them of the city of Joppe 8 But when he heard that the Jamnites were minded to do in like manner unto the Jews that dwelt among them 9 He came upon the Jamnites also by night and set fire on the haven and the navy so that the light of the fire was seen at Jerusalem two hundred and fourty furlongs off 10 Now when they were gone from thence nine furlongs in their journey toward Timotheus no fewer then five thousand men on foot and five hundred hors men of the Arabians set upon him 11 Whereupon there was a very sore battel but Judas side by the help of God got the victory so that the Nomades of Arabia being overcome besought Judas for peace promising both to give him cattel and to pleasure him otherwise 12 Then Judas thinking indeed that they would be profitable in many things granted them peace whereupon they shook hands and so they ‖ Or went from place to place with their families and cattel departed to their tents 13 He went also about to make a bridge to a certain strong city which was tended about with walls and inhabited by people of divers countreys and the name of it was Caspis 14 But they that were within it put such trust in the strength of the walls and provision of victuals that they behaved themselves rudely towards them that were with Judas railing and blaspheming and uttering such words as were not to be spoken 15 Wherefore Judas with his company calling upon the great Lord of the world who without any rams of engines of war did cast down Jericho in the time of Joshua gave a fierce assault against the walls 16 And took the city by the will of God and made unspeakable daughters insomuch that a lake two furlongs broad near adjoyning thereunto being silled full was seen running with bloud 17 Then departed they from thence seven hundred and fifty furlongs and came to Characa unto the Jews that are called Tubieni 18 But as for Timotheus they found him not in the places for before he had dispatched any thing he departed from thence having left a very strong garison in a certain hold 19 Howbeit Dositheus and Sosipater who were of Maccabeus captains went forth and slew those that Timotheus had left in the fortress above ten thousand men 20 And Maccabeus ranged his army by bands and set ‖ Dositheus and Sosipater them over the baâ—ds went against Timotheus who had about him an hundred and twenty thousand men of foot two thousand five hundred hors-men 21 Now when Timotheus had knowledge of Judas coming he sent the women and children and the other baggage unto a fortress called Carnion for the town was hard to besiege and uneasie to come unto by reason of the straitness of all the places 22 But when Judas his first band came in sight the enemies being smitten with fear and terrour through the appearing of him that seeth all things fled amain one running this way another that way so as that they were often hurt of their own men and wounded with the points of their own swords 23 Judas also was very earnest in pursuing them killing those wicked wretches of whom he slew about thirty thousand men 24 Moreover Timotheus himself fell into the hands of Dositheus and Soâ—ipater whom he besought with much craft to let him go with his life because he had many of the Jews parents and the brethren of some of them who it they had put him to death should not be regarded 25 So when he had assured them with many words that he would restore them without hurt according to the agreement they let him go for the saving of their brethren 26 Then Maccabeus marched forth to Carnion and to the temple of ‖ That is Venus Atargatis and there he slew five and twenty thousand persons 27 And after he had put to flight and destroyed them Judas removed the host towards Ephron a strong city wherein Lysias abode and a great multitude of divers nations and the strong young men kept the walls and defended them mightily wherein also was great provision of engines and darts 28 But when Judas and his company had called upon almighty God who with his power breaketh the strength of his enemies they wall the city and slew twenty and five thousand of them that were within 29 From thence they departed to Sâ—ythopolis which lieth six hundred furlongs from Jerusalem 30 But when the Jews that dwelt there had testified that the Scythopolitans dealt lovingly with them and entreated them kindly in the time of their adversity 31 They gave them thanks desiring them to be friendly still unto them so they came to Jerusalem the feast of that weeks approaching 32 And after the feast called Pentecost they went forth against Gorgias the governour of Idumea 33 Who came out with three thousand men of foot and four hundred hors-men 34 And it hapned that in their fighting together a few of the Jews were slain 35 At which time Dositheus one of Bacenors company who was on hors-back and a strong man was still upon Gorgias and taking hold of his coat drew him by force and when he would have taken that cursed man alive a hors-man of Thracia coming upon him ‖ Or put by â—a â—rm or wounded him in the shoulder or strook him in the shoulder smote off his shoulder so that Gorgias sled unto Marisa 36 Now when they that were with Gorgias had fought long and were weary Judas called upon the Lord that he would shew himself to be their helper and leader of the battel 37 And with that he began in his own language and sung plasms with a loud voice and rushing unawares upon Gorgias men he put them to flight 38 So Judas gathered his host and came into the city Odollam And when the seventh day came they purified themselves as the custom was and kept the sabbath in the same place 39 And upon the day following ‖ Or at such time c. as the use had been Judas and his company came to take up the bodies of them that were slain and to bury them with their kinsmen in their
devil sinneth from the beginning For this purpose the Son of God was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil 9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin for his seed remaineth in him and he cannot sin because he is born of God 10 In this the children of God are manifest and the children of the devil Whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God neither he that loveth not his brother 11 For this is the ‖ Or commandment message that ye heard from the beginning * Joh. 13.34 15.12 that we should love one another 12 Not as * Gen. 4.8 Cain who was of that wicked one and slew his brother And wherefore slew he him Because his own works were evil and his brothers righteous 13 Marvel not my brethren if the world hate you 14 We know that we have passed from death unto life because we love the brethren he that loveth not his brother abideth in death 15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him 16 Hereby perceive we the love of God because he laid down his life for us and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren 17 But * Luk. 3.11 whoso hath this worlds good and seeth his brother have need and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him how dwelleth the love of God in him 18 My little children let us not love in word neither in tongue but in deed and in truth 19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth and shall †Gr. persâ—â—â—e assure our hearts before him 20 For it our heart condemn us God is greater then our heart and knoweth all things 21 Beloved if our heart condemn us not then have we confidence towards God 22 And * Mat. 21.22 Joh. 15.7 16.23 whatsoever we ask we receive of him because we keep his commandments and do those things that are pleasing in his sight 23 And * Joh. 6.29 and 17.3 this is his commandment that we should beleeve on the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another as he gave us commandment 24 And * Joh. 15. â—0 he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him and he in him and hereby we know that he abideth in us by the Spirit which he hath given us CHAP. IV. 1 He warneth them not to beleeve all teachers who boast of the Spirit but to try them by the rules of the catholick faith 7 and by many reasons exhorteth to brotherly love BEloved beleeve not every spirit but try the spirits whether they are of God because many false prophets are gone out into the world 2 Hereby know ye the spirit of God Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God and this is that spirit of antichrist whereof you have heard that it should come and even now already is it in the world 4 Ye are of God little children and have overcome them because greater is he that is in you then he that is in the world 5 They are of the world therefore speak they of the world and the world heareth them 6 We are of God * Joh. 8 47. he that knoweth God heareth us he that is not of God heareth not us Hereby know we the Spirit of truth and the spirit of errour 7 Beloved let us love one another for love is of God and every one that loveth is born of God and knoweth God 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God for God is love 9 * Joh. 3.16 In this was manifested the love of God towards us because that God sent his onely begotten Son into the world that we might live through him 10 Herein is love not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins 11 Beloved if God so loved us we ought also to love one another 12 * 1 Tim. 6.16 No man hath seen God at any time If we love one another God dwelleth in us and his love is perfected in us 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him and he in us because he hath given us of his Spirit 14 And we have seen and do testifie that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world 15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God God dwelleth in him and he in God 16 And we have known and beleeved the love that God hath to us God is love and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God and God in him 17 Herein is †Gr. love with us our love made perfect that we may have boldness in the day of judgement because as he is so are we in this world 18 There is no fear in love but perfect love casteth out fear because fear hath torment he that feareth is not made perfect in love 19 We love him because he first loved us 20 If a man say I love God and hateth his brother he is a liar for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen how can he love God whom he hath not seen 21 And * Joh. 13.34 15.12 this commandment have we from him that he who loveth God love his brother also CHAP. V. He that loveth God loveth his children and keepeth his commandments 3 which to the faithful are light and not grievous 9 Jesus is the Son of God able to save us 14 and to bear our prayers which we make for our selves and for others WHosoever beleeveth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him 2 By this we know that we love the children of God when we love God and keep his commandments 3 For this is the love of God that we keep his commandments and * Mat. 11.30 his commandments are not grievous 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world and this is the victory that overcometh the world even our faith 5 Who is he that overcometh the world but he that beleeveth that Jesus is the Son of God 6 This is he that came by water and bloud even Jesus Christ not by water onely but by water and bloud and it is the Spirit that beareth witness because the Spirit is truth 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven the Father the Word and the holy Ghost and these three are one 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth the spirit and the water and the bloud and these three agree in one 9 If we receive the witness of men the witness of God is greater for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son 10 He that beleeveth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself he that beleeveth
old serpent called the devil and Satan which deceiveth the whole world he was cast out into the earth and his angels were cast out with him 10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven Now is come salvation and strength and the kingdom of our God and the power of his Christ for the accuser of our brethren is cast down which accused them before our God day and night 11 And they overcame him by the bloud of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony and they loved not their lives unto the death 12 Therefore rejoyce ye heavens and ye that dwell in them Wo to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea for the devil is come down unto you having great wrath because he knoweth that he hath but a short time 13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man childe 14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle that she might flie into the wilderness into her place where she is nourished for a time and times and half a time from the face of the serpent 15 And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood 16 And the earth helped the woman and the earth opened her mouth and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth 17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman and went to make war with the remnant of her seed which keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ CHAP. XIII 1 A beast riseth out of the sea with seven heads and ten borns to whom the dragon giveth his power 11 Another beast cometh up out of the earth 14 causeth an image to be made of the former beast 15 and that men should worship it 16 and receive his mark ANd I stood upon the sand of the sea and saw a beast rise up out of the sea having seven heads and ten horns and upon his horns ten crowns and upon his heads the ‖ Or names name of blasphemy 2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard and his feet were as the feet of a bear and his mouth as the mouth of a lion and the dragon gave him his power and his seat and great authority 3 And I saw one of his heads as it were †Gr slain wounded to death and his deadly wound was healed and all the world wondred after the beast 4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast and they worshipped the beast saying Who is like unto the beast who is able to make war with him 5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies and power was given unto him ‖ Or to make war to continue fourty and two moneths 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God to blaspheme his name and his tabernacle and them that dwell in heaven 7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints and to overcome them and power was given him over all kindreds and tongues and nations 8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world 9 If any man have an ear let him hear 10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity * Matth. 16.52 He that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword Here is the patience and the faith of the saints 11 And I behold another beast coming up out of the earth and he had two horns like a lamb and he spake as a dragon 12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast whose deadly wound was healed 13 And he doeth great wonders so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men 14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast saying to them that dwell on the earth that they should make an image to the beast which had the wound by a sword and did live 15 And he had power to give †Gr. treath life unto the image of the beast that the image of the beast should both speak and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed 16 And he causeth all both small and great rich and poor free and bond †Gr. to give to receive a mark in their right hand or in their foreheads 17 And that no man might buy or sell save he that had the mark or the name of the beast or the number of his name 18 Here is wisdom Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast for it is the number of a man and his number is six hundred threescore and six CHAP. So Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem and saw not the kings face 29 Therefore Absalom sent for Joab to have sent him to the king but he would not come to him and when he sent again the second time he would not come 30 Therefore he said unto his servants See Joabs field is †Heb. near my place near mine and he hath barley there go and set in on fire and Absaloms servants set the field on fire 31 Then Joab arose and came to Absalom unto his house and said unto him Wherefore have thy servants set my field on fire 32 And Absalom answered Joab Behold I sent unto thee saying Come hither that I may send thee to the king to say Wherefore am I come from Geshur it had been good for me to have been there still now therefore let me see the kings face and it there be any iniquity in me let him kill me 33 So Joab came to the king and told him and when he had called for Absalom he came to the king and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king and the king kissed Absalom CHAP. XV. 1 Absalom by fair speeches and courtesies stealeth the hearts of Israel 7Vnder pretence of a vow he obtaineth leave to go to Hebron 10 He maketh there a great conspiracy 13 David upon the news fleeth from Jerusalem 19 Ittai would not leave him 24 Zadok and Abiathar are sent back with the ark 30 David and his company go up mount Olivet weeping 31 He curseth Abithophels counsel 32 Hushai is sent back with instructions ANd it came to pass after this that Absalom prepared him chariots and horses and fifty men to run before him 2 And Absalom rose up early and stood beside the way of the gate and it was so that when any man that had a controversy †Heb. to come came to the king for judgement then Absalom called unto him and said Of what city art thou And he said Thy servant is of one were called and they went in their simplicity and they knew not any thing 12 And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite Davids counsellour from his city even from Giloh while he offered sacrifices CIII 1 An exhortation to bless God for his mercy 15 and for the constancy thereof ¶ A psalm of David BLess the LORD O my soul and all that is within me bless his holy name 2 Bless the LORD O my soul and forget not all his benefits 3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities who healeth all thy diseases 4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction who crowneth thee with loving kindness and tender mercies 5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things so that thy youth is renewed like the eagles 6 The LORD executeth righteousness and judgement for all that are oppressed 7 He made known his ways unto Moses his acts unto the children of Israel 8 * Exod 34.6 7. XXVII 1 The care of God over his vineyard 7 His chastisements differ from judgements 12 The Church of Jews and Gentiles IN that day the LORD with his fore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the ‖ Or crossing like a bar piercing serpent even leviathan that crooked serpent and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea 2 In that day sing ye unto her A vineyard of red wine 3 I the LORD do keep it I will water it every moment lest any hurt it I will keep it night and day 4 Fury is not in me who would set the briers and thorns against me in battel I would ‖ Or march against go through them I would burn them together 5 Or let him take hold of my strength that he may make peace with me and he shall make peace with me 6 He shall cause them that come of Jacob to take root Israel shall blossom and bud and fill the face of the world with fruit 7 ¶ Hath he smitten him †Heb. according to the sâ—oâ—e of those as he smote those that smote him or is he slain according to the slaughter of them that are slain by him 8 In measure ‖ Or. when thou sendest it forth when it shooteth forth thou wilt debate with it ‖ Or when he removeth it he stayeth his rough wind in the day of the east-wind 9 By this therefore shall the iniquity of Jacob be purged and this is all the fruit to take away his sin when he maketh all the stones of the altar as chalk-stones that are beaten in sunder the groves and ‖ Or 〈◊〉 images images shall not stand up 10 Yet the defenced city shall be desolate and the habitation forsaken and left like a wilderness there shall the calf feed and there shall he lie down and consume the branches thereof 11 When the boughs thereof are withered they shall be broken off the women come and set them on fire for it is a people of no understanding therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them and he that formed them will shew them no favour 12 ¶ And it shall come to pass in that day that the LORD shall beat off from the chanel of the river unto the stream of Egypt and ye shall be gathered one by one O ye children of Israel 13 And it shall come to pass in that day that the great trumpet shall be blown and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria and the out casts in the land of Egypt and shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem CHAP. XXVIII 1 The prophet threatneth Ephraim for their pride and drunkenness 5 The residue shall be advanced in the kingdom of Christ 7 He rebuketh their errour 9 their untowardness to learn 14 and their security 16 Christ the sure foundationis promised 18 Their security shall be tried 23 They are incited to the consideration of Gods discreet providence WO to the crown of pride to the drunkards of Ephraim whose glorious beauty is a sading stower which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are †Heb. broken overcome with wine 2 Behold the Lord hath a mighty and strong one which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm as a floud of mighty waters overflowing shall cast down to the earth with the hand 3 The crown of pride the drunkards of Ephraim shall be troden †Heb. with feet under feet 4 And the glorious beauty which is on the head of the fat valley shall be a fading flower and as the hasty fruit before the summer which when he that looketh upon it seeth it while it is yet in his hand he †Heb. swalloweth eateth it up 5 ¶ In that day shall the LORD of hosts be for a crown of glory and for a diadem of beauty unto the residue of his people 6 And for a spirit of judgement to him that sitteth in judgement and for strength to them that turn the battel to the gate 7 ¶ But they also have erred through wine and through strong drink are out of the way the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink they are swallowed up of wine they are out of the way through strong drink they err in vision they stumble in judgement 8 For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness so that there is no place clean 9 ¶ Whom shall he teach knowledge and whom shall he make to understand †Heb. the bearing doctrine them that are weaned from the milk and drawn from the breasts 10 For precept ‖ Or hath been must be upon precept precept upon precept line upon line line upon line here a little and there a little 11 For with †Heb. stammerings of lips * 1 Cor. 14.21 stammering lips and another tongue ‖ Or he hath spoken will he speak to this people 12 To whom he said This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest and this is the refreshing yet they would not hear 13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept precept upon precept line upon line line upon line here a little and there a little that they might go and fall backward and be broken and snared and taken 14 ¶ Wherefore hear the word of the LORD ye scornful men that rule this people which is in Jerusalem 15 Because ye have said We have made a covenant with death and with hell are we at agreement when the overflowing scourge shall pass through it shall not come unto us for we have made lies our refuge and under falihood have we hid our selves 16 ¶ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD Behold I lay in Zion for a foundation * Psal 118.22 Matth. 21.42 Act. 4.11 Rom. 9.33 10.11 1 Pet 2.6 7 8. a stone a tried stone a precious corner stone a sure foundation he that believeth shall not make haste 17 Judgement also will I lay to the line and righteousness to the plummet and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies and the waters shall overflow the hiding place 18 ¶ And you covenant with death shall be disanulled and your agreement with hell shall not stand when the overflowing scourge shall pass through 〈◊〉 ye shall be †Heb. a treaâ—ing down to it troden down by it 19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you for morning by morning shall it pass over by day and by night and it shall be a vexation onely ‖ Or when be shall make you to understand doctrine to understand the
utterly ‖ Or abolished rooted out 11 Who then should make more mourning then she that hath lost so great a multitude and not thou which art sorry but for one 12 But if thou sayest unto me My lamentation is not like the earths because I have lost the fruit of my womb which I brought forth with pains and bare with sorrows 13 ‖ But the earth after the manner of the earth whereinto the present multitude is gone again as it came out But the earth not so for the multitude present in it according to the course of the earth is gone as it came 14 Then say I unto thee Like as thou hast brought forth with labour even so the earth also hath given her fruit namely man ever since the beginning unto him that made her 15 Now therefore keep thy sorrow to thy self and bear with a good courage that which hath be faln thee 16 For it thou shalt acknowledge the determination of God to be just thou shalt both receive thy son in time and shalt be commended amongst women 17 Go thy way then into the city to thine husband 18 And she said unto me That will I not do I will not go into the city but here will I die 19 So I proceeded to speak further unto her and said 20 Do not so but be counselled by me for how many are the adversities of Sion be comforted in regard of the sorrow of Jerusalem 21 For thou seest that our sanctuary is said waste our altar broken down our temple destroyed 22 Our psaltery is laid on the ground our song is put to silence our rejoycing is at an end the light of our candlestick is put out the ark of our covenant is spoiled our holy things are defiled and the name that is called upon us is almost profaned our children are put to shame our priests are burnt our Levites are gone into captivity our virgins are defiled and our wives ravished our righteous men carried away our little ones destroyed our young men are brought in bondage and our strong men are become weak 23 And which is the greatest of all the seal of Sion hath now lost her honour for she is delivered into the hands of them that hate us 24 And therefore shake off thy great heaviness and put away the multitude of sorrows that the Mighty may be merciful unto thee again and the Highest shall give thee rest and ease from thy labour 25 And it came to pass while I was talking with her behold her face upon a sudden shined exceedingly and her countenance glistered so that I was afraid of her and mused what it might be 26 And behold suddenly she made a great cry very fearful so that the earth shook at the noise of the woman 27 And I looked and behold the woman appeared unto me no more but there was a city builded and a large place shewed it self from the foundations then was I afraid and cried with a loud voice and said 28 Where is * Ch. 4.1 Uriel the angel who came unto me at the first for he hath caused me to fall ‖ Or into the multitude in a trance into many trances and mine end is turned into corruption and my prayer to rebuke 29 And as I was speaking these words behold he came unto me and looked upon me 30 And so I say as one that had been dead and mine understanding was taken from me and he took me by the right hand and comforted me and set me upon my feet and said unto me 31 What aileth thee and why art thou so disquieted and why is thine understanding troubled and the thoughts of thine heart 32 And I said Because thou hast forsaken me and yet I did according to thy * Chap 5.20 words and I went into the field and so I have seen and yet see that I am not able to express 33 And he said unto me Stand up manfully and I will advise thee 34 Then said I Speak on my lord in me onely forsake me not lest I die frustrate of my hope 35 For I have seen that I knew not and hear that I do not know 36 Or is my sense deceived or my soul in a dream 37 Now therefore I beseech thee that thou wilt shew thy servant of this ‖ Or trance vision 38 He answered me then and said Hear me and I shall inform thee and tell thee wherefore thou art afraid for the Highest will reveal many secret things unto thee 39 He hath seen that thy ‖ Or purpose way is right for that thou sorrowest continually for thy people and makest great lamentation for Sion 40 This therefore is the meaning of the vision which thou lately sawest 41 Thou sawest a woman mourning and thou beganst to comfort her 42 But now seest thou the likeness of the woman no more but there appeared unto thee a city builded 43 And whereas she told thee of the death of her son this is the ‖ Or interpretation solution 44 This woman whom thou sawest is Sion and whereas she said unto thee even she whom thou seest as a city builded 45 Whereas I say she said unto thee that she hath been thirty years barren those are the thirty years wherein there was no offering made in her 46 But after thirty years Solomon builded the city and offered offerings and then bare the barren a son 47 And whereas she told thee that she nourished him with labour that was the dwelling in Jerusalem 48 But whereas she said unto thee That my son coming into his marriage-chamber hapned to have a fall and died this was the destruction that came to Jerusalem 49 And behold thou sawest her likeness and because she mourned for her son thou beganst to comfort her and of these things which have chanced these are to be opened unto thee 50 For now the most High seeth that thou art grieved unfeignedly and sufferest from thy whole heart for her so hath he shewed thee the brightness of her glory and the comeliness of her beauty 51 And therefore I bade thee remain in the field where no house was builded 52 For I knew that the Highest would shew this unto thee 53 Therefore I commanded thee to go into the field where no foundation of any building was 54 For in the place wherein the Highest beginneth to shew his city there can no mans building be able to stand 55 And therefore sear not let not thine heart he affrighted but go thy way in and see the beauty and greatness of the building as much as thine eyes be able to see 56 And then shalt thou hear as much as thine ears may comprehend 57 For thou art blessed above many other and ‖ Or at called to be with c. art called with the Highest and so are but few 58 But to morrow at night thou shalt remain here 59 And so shall the Highest shew thee visions of the ‖ Or
three days I will speak other things unto thee and declare unto thee mighty and wondrous things 57 Then went I forth into the field giving praise and thanks greatly unto the most High because of his wonders which he did in time 58 And because he governeth the same and such things as fall in their seasons and there I sat three days CHAP. XIV 1 A voice out of a bush â—aâ—eth Esdras 10 and telleth him that the world waxeth old 22 He desireth because the law was burnt to write all aâ—ain 24 and is bid to get swift writers 39 He and they are filled with understanding 45 But he is charged not to publish all that is written ANd it came to pass upon the third day I sat under an oak and behold there came a voice out of a bush over against me and said Esdras Esdras 2 And I said Here am I Lord and I stood up upon my feet 3 Then said he unto me * Exed 3.2 8. In the bush I did manifestly reveal my self unto Moses and talked with him when my people served in Egypt 4 And I sent him and led my people out of Egypt and brought him up to the mount of Sinai where I held him by me a long season 5 And told him many wondrous things and shewed him the secrets of the times and the end and commanded him saying 6 These words shalt thou declare and these shalt thou hide 7 And now I say unto thee 8 That thou lay up in thy heart the signs that I have shewed and the dreams that thou hast seen and the interpretations which thou hast heard 9 For thou shalt be taken away from all and from henceforth thou shalt remain with my son and with such as be like thee until the times be ended 10 For the world hath lost his youth and the times begin to was old 11 For the world is divided into twelve parts and the ten parts of it are gone already and half of a tenth part 12 And there remaineth that which is after the half of the tenth part 13 Now therefore set thine house in order and reprove thy people comfort such of them as be in trouble and 〈◊〉 renounce corruption 14 Let go from thee mortal thoughts cast away the burdens of man put off now the weak nature 15 And set aside the thoughts that are most heavy unto thee and haste thee to flee from there times 16 For * Matth. 4.7 yet greater evils then those which thou hast seen happen shall be done hereafter 17 For look how much the world shall be weaker through age so much the more shall evils increase upon them that dwell therein 18 For the truth is fled far away and leasing is hard at hand for now hasteth the vision to come which thou hast seen 19 Then answered I before thee and said 20 Behold Lord I will go as thou hast commanded me and reprove the people which are present but they that shall be born afterward who shall admonish them thus the world is set in darkness and they that dwell therein are without light 21 For thy law is hurnt therefore no man knoweth the things that are done of thee or the works that shall begin 22 But if I have found grace before thee send the holy Ghost into me and I shall write all that hath been done in the world since the beginning which were written in thy law that men may finde thy path and that they which will live in the latter days may live 23 And he answered me saying Go thy way gather the people together and say unto them that they seek thee not for some things shalt thou publish and some things shalt thou shew secretly to the wise to morrow this hour shalt thou begin to write 27 Then went I forth as he commanded and gathered all the people together and said 28 Hear these words O Israel 29 * Gen. 47.4 Our fathers at the beginning were strangers in Egypt from whence they were delivered 30 * Act. 7.53 And received the law of life which they kept not which ye also have transgressed after them 31 Then was the land even the land of Sion parted among you by lot but your fathers and ye your selves have done unrighteousness and have not kept the ways which the Highest commanded you 32 And for as much as he is a righteous judge he took from you in time the thing that he had given you 33 And now are you here and your brethren amongst you 34 Therefore if so be that you will subdue your own understanding and reform your hearts ye shall be kept alive and after death ye shall obtain mercy 35 For after death shall the judgement come when we shall live again and then shall the names of the righteous be manifest and the works of the ungodly shall be declared 36 Let no man therefore come unto me now nor seek after me these fourty days 37 So I took the five men as he commanded me and we went into the field and remained there 38 And the next day behold a voice called me saying Esdras * Ezek. 3.2 open thy mouth and drink that I give thee to drink 39 Then opened I my mouth and behold he reached me a full cup which was full as it were with water but the colour of it was like fire 40 And I took it and drank and when I had drunk of it my heart uttered understanding and wisdom grew in my breast for my spirit strengthned my memory 41 And my mouth was opened and shut no more 42 The Highest gave understanding unto the five men and they wrote the wonderful visions of the night that were told which they knew not and they sat fourty days and they wrote in the day and at night they are bread 43 As for me I spake in the day and I held not my tongue by night 44 In fourty days they wrote ‖ Or 〈◊〉 hundred and four two hundred and four books 45 And it came to pass when the fourty days were fulfilled that the Highest spake saying The first that thou hast written publish openly that the worthy and unworthy may read it 46 But keep the seventy last that thou mayest deliver them onely to such as be wise among the people 47 For in them is the spring of understanding the fountain of wisdom and ‖ Or the 〈◊〉 of knowledge the stream of knowledge 48 And I did so CHAP. XV. 1 This prophesie is certain 5 God will take vengeance
in the ways 5 He shut them up therefore in the towres and encamped against them and destroyed them utterly and burnt the towres of that place with fire and all that were therein 6 Afterward he passed over to the children of Ammon where he found a mighty power much people with Timotheus their captain 7 So he fought many battels with them till at length they were discomfited before him and he smote them 8 And when he had taken Jazar with the towns belonging thereto he returned into Judea 9 Then the heathen that were at Galaad assembled themselves together against the Israelites that were in their quarters to destroy them but they fled to the fortress of Dathema 10 And sent letters unto Judas and his brethren The heathen that are round about us are assembled together against us to destroy us 11 And they are preparing to come and take the fortress whereunto we are fled Timotheus being captain of their host 12 Come now therefore and deliver us from their hands for many of us are slain 13 Yea all our brethren that were in the places of Tobie are put to death their wives and their children also they have carried away captives and born away their stuff and they have destroyed there about a thousand men 14 While these letters were yet reading behold there came other messengers from Galilee with their clothes rent who reported on this wise 15 And said They of Ptolemais and of Tyrus and Sidon and all Galilee of the Gentiles are assembled together against us to consume us 16 Now when Judas and the people heard these words there assembled a great congregation together to consult what they should do for their brethren that were in trouble and assaulted of them 17 Then said Judas unto Simon his brother Choose thee out men and go and deliver thy brethren that are in Galilee for I and Jonathan my brother will go into the countrey of Galaad 18 So he left Joseph the son of Zacharias and Azarias captains of the people with the remnant of the host in Judea to keep it 19 Unto whom he gave commandment saying Take ye the charge of this people and see that you make not war against the heathen untill the time that we come again 20 Now unto Simon were given three thousand men to go into Galilee and unto Judas eight thousand men for the countrey of Galaad 21 Then went Simon into Galilee where he fought many battels with the heathen so that the heathen were discomfited by him 22 And he pursued them unto the gate of Ptolemais and there were slain of the heathen about three thousand men whose spoils he took 23 And ‖ Or captive Jews those that were in Galilee and in Arbattis with their wives and their children and all that they had took he away with him and brought them into Judea with great joy 24 Judas Maccabeus also and his brother Jonathan went over Jordan and travelled three days journey in the wilderness 25 Where they met with the Nabathites who came unto them in peaceable manner and told them every thing that had hapned to their brethren in the land of Galaad 26 And how that many of them were shut up in ‖ Or Hasorra Bosora and Bosor and Alenâ—◠‖ Or Chascor Casphor Maked and Carnaim all these cities are strong and great 27 And that they were shut up in the rest of the cities of the countrey of Galaad and that against to morrow ‖ Or the heathen they had appointed to bring their host against the sorts and to take them and to destroy them all in one day 28 Hereupon Judas and his host turned suddenly by the way of the wilderness unto ‖ Or Bosor Bosora and when he had won the city he slew all the males with the edge of the sword and took all their spoils and burnt the city with fire 29 From whence he removed by night and went till he came to the fortress 30 And betimes in the morning they †Gr. lift up their 〈◊〉 looked up and behold there was an innumerable people bearing ladders and other engines of war to take the fortress for ‖ Or the heathen assaulted the Jews they assaulted them 31 When Judas therefore saw that the battel was begun and that the cry of the city went up to heaven with trumpets and a great sound 32 He said unto his host Fight this day for your brethren 33 So he went forth behinde them in three companies who sounded their trumpets and cried with prayer 34 Then the host of Timotheus knowing that it was Maccabeus fled from him wherefore he smote them with a great slaughter so that there were killed of them that day about eight thousand men 35 This done Judas turned aside to Maspha and after he had assaulted it he took it and slew all the males therein and received the spoils thereof and burnt it with fire 36 From thence went he and took Casphon Maged Bosor and the other cities of the countrey of Galaad 37 After these things gathered Timotheus another host and encamped against Raphon beyond the brook 38 So Judas sent men to espy the host who brought him word saying All the heathen that be round about us are assembled unto them even a very great host 39 He hath also hired the Arabians to help them and they have pitched their tents beyond the brook ready to come and fight against thee upon this Judas went to meet them 40 Then Timotheus said unto the captains of his host When Judas and his host come near the brook if he pass over first unto us we shall not be able to withstand him for he will mightily prevail against us 41 But if he be afraid and camp beyond the river we shall go over unto him and prevail against him 42 Now when Judas came near the brook he caused the scribes of the people to remain by the brook unto whom he gave commandment saying Suffer no man to remain in the camp but let all come to the battel 43 So he went first over unto them and all the people after him then all the heathen being discomfited before him cast away their weapons and fled unto the temple that was at Carnaim 44 But ‖ Judas and his company they took the city and burnt the temple with all that were therein Thus was Carnaim subdued neither could they stand any longer before Judas 45 Then Judas gathered together all the Israelites that were in the countrey of Galaad from the least unto the greatest even their wives and their children and their stuff a very great host to the end they might come into the land of Judea 46 Now when they came unto Ephron this was a great city in the way as they should go very well fortified they could not turn from it either on the right hand or the left but must needs pass through the midst of it 47 Then they of the city shut
And so they through mine hypocrisie and desire to live a little time and a moment longer should be deceived by me and I get a slain to mine old age and make it abominable 26 For though for the present time I should be delivered from the punishment of men yet should I not escape the hand of the Almighty neither alive nor dead 27 Wherefore now manfully changing this life I will shew my self such an one as mine age requireth 28 And leave a notable example to such as be young to die willingly and couragiously for the honourable and holy laws and when he had said these words immediately he went to the torment 29 They that led him changing the good will they bare him a little before into hatred because the foresaid speeches proceeded as they thought from ‖ Or madness or â—ridâ— a desparate minde 30 But when he was ready to die with stripes he groaned and said It is manifest unto the Lord that hath the holy knowledge that whereas I might have been delivered from death I now endure sore pains in body by being beaten but in soul am well content to suffer these things because I fear him 31 And thus this man died leaving his death for an example of a noble courage and a memorial of vertue not onely unto young men but unto all his nation CHAP. VII The constancy and cruel death of seven brethren and their mother in one day because they would not eat swines flesh at the kings commandment IT came to pass also that seven brethren with their mother were taken and compelled by the king against the law to taste swines flesh and were tormented with scourges and whips 2 But one of them that spake first said thus What wouldest thou ask or learn of us we are ready to die rather then to transgress the laws of our fathers 3 Then the king being in a rage commanded pans and caldrons to be made but. 4 Which forthwith being heared he commanded to cut out the tongue of him that spake first and to cut off the utmost parts of his body the rest of his brethren and his mother looking on 5 Now when he was thus maimed in all his members he commanded him being yet alive to be brought to the fire and to be fried in the pan and as the vapour of the pan was for a good space dispersed they exhorted one another with the mother to die manfully saying thus 6 The Lord God looketh upon us and in truth hath comfort in us as * Deu. 32.36 Moses in his song which witnessed to their faces declared saying And he shall be comforted in his servants 7 So when the first was dead after this manner they brought the second to make him a mocking-stock and when they had Pulled off the skin of his head with the hair they asked him Wilt thou eat before thou be punished throughout every member of thy body 8 But he answered in his own language and said No. Wherefore he also received the next torment in order as the former did 9 And when he was at the last gasp he said Thou like a fury takest us out of this present life but the King of the world shall raise us up who have died for his laws unto everlasting life 10 After him was the third made a mocking-stock and when he was required he put out his tongue and that right soon holding forth his hands manfully 11 And said couragiously These I had from heaven and for his laws I despise them and from him I hope to receive them again 12 Insomuch that the king and they that were with him marvelled at the young mans courage for that he nothing regarded the pains 13 Now when this man was dead also they tormented and mangled the fourth in like manner 14 So when he was ready to die he said thus It is good being put to death by men to look for hope from God to be raised up again by him as for thee thou shalt have no resurrection to life 15 Afterward they brought the fifth also and mangled him 16 Then looked he unto the king and said Thou hast power over men thou art corruptible thou doest what thou wilt yet think not that our nation is forsaken of God 17 But abide a while and behold his great power how he will torment thee and thy seed 18 After him also they brought the sixth who being ready to die said Be not deceived without cause for we suffer these things for our selves having sinned against our God therefore marvellous things are done unto us 19 But think not thou that takest in hand to strive against God that thou shalt escape unpunished 20 But the mother was marvellous above all and worthy of honourable memory for when she saw her seven sons slain within the space of one day she bare it with a good courage because of the hope that she had in the Lord. 21 Yea she exhorted every one of them in her own language filled with couragious spirits and stirring up her womanish thoughts with a manly stomach she said unto them 22 I cannot tell how you came into my womb for I neither gave you breath nor life neither was it I that formed the members of every one of you 23 But doubtless the Creatour of the world who formed the generation of man and found out the beginning of all things will also of his own mercy give you breath and life again as you now regard not your own selves for his laws sake 24 Now Antiochus thinking himself despised and suspecting it to be a reproachful speech whilest the youngest was yet alive did not onely exhort him by words but also assured him with oaths that he would make him both a rich and a happy man if he would turn from the laws of his fathers and that also he would take him for his friend and trust him with affairs 25 But when the young man would in no case hearken unto him the king called his mother and exhorted her that she would counsel the young man to save his life 26 And when he had exhorted her with many words she promised him that she would counsel her son 27 But she bowing her self towards him laughing the cruel tyrant to scorn spake in her countrey language on this manner O my son have pity upon me that bare thee nine moneths in my womb and gave thee such three years and nourished thee and brought thee up unto this age and endured the troubles of education 28 I beseech thee my son look upon the heaven and the earth and all that is therein and consider that God made them of things that were not and so was mankinde made likewise 29 Fear not this tormentour but being worthy of thy brethren take thy death that I may receive thee again in mercy with thy brethren 30 Whiles she was yet speaking these words the young man said Whom wait ye for I will not obey the kings

And they arrived at the countrey of the Gadarens which is over against Galilee 27 And when he went forth to land there met him out of the city a certain man which had devils long time and ware no clothes neither abode in any house but in the tombs 28 When he saw Jesus he cried out and fell down before him and with a loud voice said What have I to do with thee Jesus thou Son of God most high I beseech thee torment me not 29 For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man For oftentimes it had caught him and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters and he brake the bands and was driven of the devil into the wilderness 30 And Jesus asked him saying What is thy name And he said Legion because many devils were entred into him 31 And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep 32 And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them And he suffered them 33 Then went the devils out of the man entred into the swine the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake were choked 34 When they that fed them saw what was done they fled and went and told it in the city and in the countrey 35 Then they went out to see what was done and came to Jesus and found the man out of whom the devils were departed sitting at the feet of Jesus clothed and in his right minde and they were afraid 36 They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed 37 ¶ Then the whole multitude of the countrey of the Gadarens round about besought him to depart from them for they were taken with great fear and he went up into the ship and returned back again 38 Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him but Jesus sent him away saying 39 Return to thine own house and shew how great things God hath done unto thee And he went his way and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him 40 And it came to pass that when Jesus was returned the people gladly received him for they were all waiting for him 41 ¶ * Mat. 9.18 And behold there came a man named Jairus and he was a ruler of the synagogue and he fell down at Jesus feet and besought him that he would come into his house 42 For he had one onely daughter about twelve years
all the woman died also 33 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she for seven had her to wife 34 And Jesus answering said unto them The children of this world marry and are given in marriage 35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage 36 Neither can they die any more for they are equal unto the angels and are the children of God being the children of the resurrection 37 Now that the dead are raised * Exod. 3.6 even Moses shewed at the bush when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jâ—â—ob 38 For he is not a God of the dead but of the living for all live unto him 39 ¶ Then certain of the scribes answering said Master thou hast well said 40 And after that they durst not ask him any question at all 41 And he said unto them * Matth. 22.42 How say they that Christ is Davids son 42 And David himself saith in the book of psalms * Psal 110.1 the LORD said unto my Lord Sit thou on my right hand 43 Till I make thine enemies thy foâ—tstool 44 David therefore calleth him Lord how is he then his son 45 ¶ Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples 46 * Matth. 23.5 Beware of the scribes which desire to walk in long robes and love greetings in the markets and the highest seats in the synagogues and the chief rooms at feasts 47 Which devour widows houses and for a shew make long prayers the same shall receive greater damnation CHAP. XXI 1 Christ commendeth the poor widow 5 He foretelleth the destruction of the temple and of the city Jerusalem 25 The signs also which shall be before the last day 34 He exhorteth them to be watchful ANd he looked up * Mark 12.41 and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury 2 And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two ‖ See Mark 12.42 mites 3 And he said Of a truth I say unto you that this poor widow hath cast in more then they all 4 For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had 5 ¶ * Matth. 24.1 And as some spake of the temple how it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts he said 6 As for these things which ye behold the days will come in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another that shall not be thrown down 7 And they asked him saying Master but when shall these things be and what signe will there be when these things shall come to pass 8 And he said Take heed that ye be not deceived for many shall come in my name saying I am Christ and the time draweth near go ye not therefore after them 9 But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions be not terrified for these things must first come to pass but the end is not by and by 10 * Matth. 24.7 Then said he unto them Nation shall rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom 11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places and famines and pestilences and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven 12 But before all these they shall lay their hands on you and persecute you delivering you up to the synagogues and into prisons being brought before kings and rulers for my names sake 13 And it shall turn to you for a testimony 14 * Matth. 10.19 Settle it therefore in your hearts not to meditate before what ye shall answer 15 For I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist 16 And ye shall be betrayed both by parents and brethren and kinsfolks and friends and some of you shall they cause to be put to death 17 And ye shall be hated of all men for my names sake 18 * Matth. 10.30 But there shall not an hair of your head perish 19 In your patience possess ye your souls 20 * Matth. 24.15 And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies then know that the desolation thereof is nigh 21 Then let them which are in Judea flee to the mountains and let them which are in the midst of it depart out and let not them that are in the countreys enter thereinto 22 For these be the days of vengeance that all things which are written may be fulfilled 23 But wo unto them that are with childe and to them that give suck in those days for there shall be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people 24 And they shall fall by the edge of the sword and shall be led away captive into all nations and Jerusalem shall be troden down of the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled 25 ¶ * Matth. 24.29 And there shall be signs in the sun and in the moon and in the stars and upon the earth distress of nations with perplexity the sea and the waves roaring 26 Mens hearts failing them for fear and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth for the powers of heaven shall be shaken 27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory 28 And when these things begin to come to pass then look up and lift up your heads for your redemption draweth nigh 29 And he spake to them a parable Behold the fig-tree and all the trees 30 When they now shoot forth ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand 31 So likewise ye when ye see these things come to pass know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand 32 Verily I say unto you This generation shall not pass away till all be fulfilled 33 Heaven and earth shall pass away but my words shall not pass away 34 ¶ And take heed to yourselves lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeting and drunkenness and cares of this life and so that day come upon you unawares 35 For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth 36 Watch ye therefore and pray always that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass and to stand before the Son of man 37 And in the day-time he was teaching in the temple and at night he went out and abode in the mount that is called the mount of Olives 38 And all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple for to hear him CHAP. bread drew nigh which is called the pass-over 2 And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him for they feared the people 3 ¶ * Matth. 26.14 Then entred Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot being of the number of the twelve 4 And he went his way and communed with the chief priests and captains how he might betray him unto them 5 And they were glad and covenanted to give him Where is the guest-chamber where I shall eat the pass-over with my disciples 12 And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished there make ready 13 And they went and found as he had said unto them and they made ready the pass over 14 * Matth. 26.20 And when the hour was come he sat down and the twelve apostles with him 15 And he said unto them ‖ Or I have heartily desires With desire I have desired to eat this pass-over with you before I suffer 16 For I say unto you I will not any more eat thereof until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God 17 And he took the cup and gave thanks and said Take this and divide it among yourselves 18 For I say unto you I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God shall come 19 ¶ * Matth. 26.26 And he took bread and gave thanks and brake it and gave unto them saying This is my body which is given for you this do in remembrance of me 20 Likewise also the cup after supper saying This cup is the new testament in my blood which is shed for you 21 ¶ * Matth. 26.21 But behold the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table 22 And truly the Son of man goeth as it was determined but wo unto that man by whom he is betrayed 20.25 And he said unto them The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactours 26 But ye shall not be so but he that is greatest Then Jesus said unto the chief priests and captains of the temple and the elders which were come to him Be ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves 53 When I was daily with you in the XXVIII 1 Paul after his shipwrack is kindly entertained of the Barbarians 3 The viper on his hand hurteth him not 8 He healeth many diseases in the island 11 They depart towards Rome 17 He declareth to the Jews the cause of his coming 24 After his preaching some were perswaded and some beleeved not 30 Yet he preacheth there two years ANd when they were escaped then they knew that the island was called Melita 2 And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness for they kindled a fire and received us every one because of the present rain and because of the cold 3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire there came a viper out of the heat and fastned on his hand 4 And when the Barbarians law the venemous beast hang on his hand they said among themselves No doubt this man is a murderer whom though he hath escaped the sea yet vengeance suffereth not to live 5 And he shook off the beast into the fire and felt no harm 6 Howbeit they looked when he should have swoln or faln down dead suddenly but after they had looked a great while and saw no harm come to him they changed their minds and said that he was a God 7 In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island whose name was Publius who received us and lodged us three days courteously 8 And it came to pass that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloudy flux to whom Paul entred in and prayed and laid his hands on him and healed him 9 So when this was done others also which had diseases in the island came and were healed 10 Who also honoured us with many honours and when we departed they laded us with such things as were necessary 11 And after three moneths we departed in a ship of Alexandria which had wintred in the isle whose signe was Castor and Pollux 12 And landing at Syracuse we tarried there three days 13 And from thence we set a compass and came to Rhegium and after one day the south-wind blew and we came the next day to Puteoâ—â— 14 Where we found brethren and were desired to tarry with them seven days and so we went toward Rome 15 And from thence when the brethren heard of us they came to meet us as far as Appii-forum and the Three taverns whom when Paul saw he thanked God and took courage 16 And when we came to Rome the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a souldier that kept him 17 And it came to pass that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together And when they were come together he said unto them Men and brethren though I have committed nothing against the people or customs of our fathers yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans 18 Who when they had examined me would have let me go because there was no cause of death in me 19 But when the Jews spake against it I was constrained to appeal unto Cesar not that I had ought to accuse my nation of 20 For this cause therefore have I called for you to see you and to speak with you because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain 21 And they said unto him We neither received letters out of Judea concerning thee neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee 22 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest for as concerning this sect we know that every where it is spoken against 23 And when they had appointed him a day there came many to him into his lodging to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God perswading them concerning Jesus both out of the law of Moses and out of the prophets from morning till evening 24 And some beleeved the things which were spoken and some beleeved not 25 And when they agreed not among themselves they departed after that Paul had spoken one word Well spake the holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers 26 Saying * Isa 6.9 Mat. 13.14 Mar. 4.12 Luk. 8.10 Joh. 12.40 Rom. 11.8 Go unto this people and say Hearing ye shall hear and shall not understand and seeing ye shall see and not perceive 27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross and their ears are dull of hearing and their eyes have they closed lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and should be converted and I should heal them 28 Be it known therefore unto you that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles and that they will hear it 29 And when he had said these words the Jews departed and had great reasoning among themselves 30 And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house and received all that came in unto him 31 Preaching the kingdom of God and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence no man forbidding him ¶ The epistle of PAUL the Apostle to the ROMANS CHAP. I. 1 Paul commendeth his calling to the Romans 9 and his desire to come to them 16 What his gospel is and the righteousness which it sheweth 18 God is angry with all manner of sin 21 What were the sins of the Gentiles PAul a servant of Jesus Christ called to be an apostle * Act. 13.2 separated unto the gospel of God 2 Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures 3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh 4 And †Or. determined declared to be the Son of God with power according to the spirit of holiness by the resurrection from the dead 5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship ‖ Or to the obedience of faith for obedience to the faith among all nations for his name 6 Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ 7 To all that be in Rome beloved of God called to be saints Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ 8 First I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world 9 For God is my witness whom I serve ‖ Or in my spirit with my spirit in the Gospel of his Son that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers
and war yet ye have not because ye ask not 3 Ye ask and receive not because ye ask amiss that ye may consume it upon your ‖ Or pleasures lusts 4 Ye adultâ—rers and adulteresses know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God 5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain The spirit that dwelleth in us suffeth ‖ Or â—aviously to envy 6 But he giveth more grace wherefore he saith * Pr. 3.34 1 Pet. 5.5 God resisteth the proud but giveth grace unto the humble 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God * Eph. 4.27 resist the devil and he will flee from you 8 Draw nigh to God and he will draw nigh to you cleanse you hands yesinners and purifie your hearts ye double-minded 9 Be afflicted and mourn and weep set your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to heaviness 10 * 1 Pet. 5.6 Humble your selves in the sight of the Lord and he shall lift you up 11 Speak not evil one of another brethren He that speaketh evil of his brother and judgeth his brother speaketh evil of the law and judgeth the law but if thou judge the law thou art not a doer of the law but a judge 12 There is one law giver who is able to save and to destroy * Rom. 14.4 who art thou that judgest another 13 * Pr. 27.1 Go to now ye that say To day or to morrow we will go into such a city and continue there a year and buy and sell and get gain 14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow For what is your life ‖ Or for it is It is even a vapour that appeareth for a little time and then vanisheth away 15 For that ye ought to say * 1 Cor. 4.13 If the Lord will we shall live and do this or that 16 But now ye rejoye in your boastings all such rejoycing is evil 17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good and doeth it not to him it is sin CHAP. V. 1 Wicked rich men are to fear Gods vengeance 7 We ought to be patient in afflictions after the example of the prophets and Job 12 to forbear swearing 13 to pray in adversity to sing in prosperity 16 to acknowledge mutually our several faults to pray one for another 19 and to reduce a straying brother to the truth GO to now ye rich men weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you 2 Your â—iches are corrupted and your garments are moth-eaten 3 Your gold and silver is cankered and the rust of them shall be a witness against you and shall eat your flesh as it were fire ye have heaped treasure together for the last days 4 Behold the hire of the labourers which have reaped down your fields which is of you kept back by fraud crieth and the cries of them which have reaped are entred into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth 5 Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth and been wanton ye have nourished your hearts as in a day of slaughter 6 Ye have condemned and killed the just and he doth not resist you 7 ‖ Or be long patient or suffer with long patience Be patient therefore brethren unto the coming of the Lord. Behold the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth and hath long patience for it until he receive the early and latter rain 8 Be ye also patient stablish your hearts for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh 9 ‖ Or groan or grieve not Grudge not one against another brethren lest ye be condemned behold the judge standeth before the door 10 Take my brethren the prophets who have spoken in the name of the Lord for an example of suffering affliction and of patience 11 Behold we count them happy which endure Ye have heard of the patience of Job and have seen the end of the Lord that the Lord is very pitiful and of tender mercy 12 But above all things my brethren * Mat. 5.34 swear not neither by heaven neither by the earth neither by any other oath but let your yea be yea and your nay nay lest ye fall into condemnation 13 Is any among you afflicted let him pray Is any merry let him sing psalms 14 Is any sick among you let him call for the elders of the church and let them pray over him * Mar. 6 1â— anointing him with oyl in the name of the Lord 15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick and the Lord shall raise him up and if he have committed sins they shall be forgiven him 16 Confess your faults one to another and pray one for another that ye may be healed The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much 17 Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are and * 1 Kin. 17.1 he prayed ‖ Or. in his prayer earnestly that it might not rain and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six moneths 18 And * 1 Kin. 18.42 45. he prayed again and the heaven gave rain and the earth brought forth her fruit 19 Brethren * Mat. 18.15 if any of you do err from the truth one convert him 20 Let him know the he which converteth the sinner from the errour of his way shall save a soul from death and shall hide a multitude of sins ¶ The first epistle general of S. PETER CHAP.
