mean_n but_o faith_n do_v make_v a_o man_n diligent_a in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n to_o attain_v the_o end_n which_o be_v the_o blessing_n that_o god_n have_v promise_v so_o in_o this_o case_n god_n do_v require_v in_o order_n to_o our_o right_a participation_n of_o this_o ordinance_n that_o we_o shall_v prepare_v ourselves_o before_o hand_n for_o this_o ordinance_n now_o it_o be_v the_o proper_a work_n of_o faith_n to_o set_v we_o to_o work_v to_o be_v diligent_a in_o our_o preparation_n for_o it_o in_o those_o way_n and_o mean_n which_o god_n have_v appoint_v and_o what_o be_v those_o brief_o among_o other_o this_o be_v one_o namely_o self-examination_n say_v the_o apostle_n let_v a_o man_n examine_v himself_o and_o so_o let_v he_o eat_v etc._n etc._n examine_v himself_o about_o what_o brief_o let_v a_o man_n examine_v himself_o if_o he_o will_v partake_v worthy_o especial_o about_o three_o or_o four_o thing_n first_o what_o be_v the_o special_a end_n of_o this_o ordinance_n and_o this_o indeed_o be_v to_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n for_o if_o so_o be_v we_o do_v not_o understand_v wherefore_o we_o come_v to_o this_o ordinance_n we_o do_v not_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n that_o be_v we_o do_v put_v no_o great_a difference_n between_o the_o bread_n and_o wine_n in_o this_o ordinance_n and_o common_a bread_n and_o wine_n and_o so_o we_o do_v not_o faith_n weak_a as_o i_o say_v it_o may_v be_v so_o weak_a as_o that_o there_o may_v be_v nothing_o sometime_o but_o hungering_n and_o thirsting_n and_o desire_n after_o christ_n therefore_o we_o shall_v search_v and_o examine_v what_o our_o faith_n be_v the_o weakness_n of_o it_o and_o thereby_o be_v the_o more_o desirous_a to_o come_v to_o this_o ordinance_n that_o our_o weak_a faith_n and_o weak_a grace_n may_v be_v strengthen_v and_o confirm_v and_o so_o three_o again_o we_o be_v to_o examine_v ourselves_o concern_v our_o repentance_n namely_o concern_v our_o judge_n of_o ourselves_o for_o former_a fail_n and_o miscarriage_n we_o shall_v be_v mourning_n and_o humble_v of_o ourselves_o for_o our_o turn_n aside_o and_o warp_a from_o the_o rule_n and_o law_n of_o god_n and_o so_o we_o shall_v desire_v and_o endeavour_v and_o resolve_v through_o the_o strength_n of_o christ_n to_o walk_v more_o close_o with_o god_n and_o upright_o for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v this_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o true_a repentance_n as_o to_o be_v humble_v for_o sin_n past_a so_o to_o resolve_v through_o the_o strength_n of_o christ_n against_o sin_n for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v and_o then_o 4thly_a again_o we_o be_v to_o examine_v ourselves_o concern_v our_o charity_n and_o love_n to_o all_o to_o consider_v wherein_o our_o love_n be_v defective_a and_o whether_o we_o can_v be_v true_o reconcile_v and_o at_o peace_n with_o all_o whether_o we_o have_v no_o grudge_n nor_o no_o envy_n for_o private_a and_o particular_a offence_n against_o one_o or_o another_o and_o that_o we_o be_v ready_a to_o go_v and_o seek_v peace_n and_o reconciliation_n with_o they_o that_o have_v offend_v we_o we_o be_v to_o consider_v our_o love_n with_o the_o weakness_n of_o it_o wherein_o we_o be_v defective_a in_o it_o these_o thing_n be_v require_v of_o we_o before_o our_o come_n to_o the_o lord_n table_n in_o a_o way_n of_o preparation_n now_o therefore_o if_o you_o will_v act_v and_o exercise_v faith_n remember_v this_o direction_n which_o faith_n will_v put_v we_o upon_o namely_o to_o be_v diligent_a in_o the_o use_n of_o those_o mean_n that_o be_v require_v of_o we_o in_o it_o be_v his_o ordinance_n and_o the_o way_n and_o mean_n which_o god_n have_v appoint_v to_o communicate_v of_o himself_o to_o we_o and_o so_o we_o must_v rest_v and_o rely_v upon_o the_o lord_n by_o faith_n for_o something_o to_o be_v speak_v that_o may_v be_v of_o concernment_n to_o we_o and_o so_o for_o receive_v the_o lords-supper_n this_o general_a rule_n will_v help_v you_o in_o that_o come_v to_o that_o ordinance_n rest_v upon_o god_n in_o a_o way_n of_o faith_n expect_v something_o from_o the_o lord_n to_o be_v give_v out_o in_o that_o ordinance_n for_o which_o the_o ordinance_n especial_o be_v appoint_v and_o what_o be_v that_o to_o have_v communion_n with_o christ_n and_o a_o communication_n and_o participation_n of_o the_o blessing_n of_o christ_n of_o the_o grace_n and_o in_o they_o and_o o_o brethren_n and_o friend_n shall_v any_o of_o we_o be_v willing_a to_o perform_v duty_n and_o enjoy_v ordinance_n in_o vain_a from_o day_n to_o day_n why_o as_o you_o have_v hear_v if_o we_o go_v on_o not_o to_o act_v faith_n in_o what_o we_o do_v all_o will_v be_v in_o vain_a and_o be_v you_o willing_a to_o be_v the_o worse_a for_o the_o duty_n that_o you_o perform_v and_o the_o ordinance_n that_o you_o enjoy_v true_o if_o we_o do_v not_o act_v faith_n in_o they_o we_o shall_v instead_o of_o be_v the_o better_o be_v the_o worse_a for_o they_o we_o can_v please_v god_n but_o shall_v displease_v he_o more_o and_o more_o and_o so_o be_v we_o willing_a to_o meet_v with_o disappointment_n at_o last_o when_o we_o come_v to_o lie_v down_o upon_o our_o sickbed_n and_o deathbed_n and_o expect_v that_o we_o have_v be_v please_v god_n by_o what_o we_o have_v do_v and_o we_o shall_v meet_v with_o a_o disappointment_n because_o we_o have_v do_v nothing_o in_o faith_n and_o so_o have_v not_o please_v god_n but_o displease_v he_o and_o be_v you_o willing_a to_o deceive_v your_o own_o soul_n as_o you_o have_v hear_v we_o may_v go_v on_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n and_o service_n and_o steer_v a_o wrong_a course_n miss_v of_o christ_n if_o our_o duty_n and_o service_n be_v not_o touch_v with_o the_o loadstone_n of_o faith_n therefore_o through_o the_o lord_n assistance_n and_o give_v you_o some_o more_o particular_a direction_n how_o we_o may_v perform_v particular_a duty_n in_o faith_n that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v please_v unto_o god_n 1._o and_o in_o the_o first_o place_n we_o shall_v begin_v with_o the_o duty_n of_o prayer_n and_o show_v you_o how_o we_o may_v so_o pray_v in_o faith_n as_o we_o may_v please_v god_n for_o that_o be_v the_o prayer_n that_o god_n do_v accept_v that_o be_v a_o prayer_n of_o faith_n therefore_o it_o be_v say_v in_o james_n 5.15_o that_o the_o prayer_n of_o faith_n shall_v save_v the_o sick_a that_o be_v there_o must_v be_v faith_n exercise_v in_o our_o prayer_n or_o else_o our_o prayer_n be_v not_o true_a prayer_n such_o as_o god_n accept_v suppose_v a_o man_n be_v a_o believer_n and_o have_v a_o habit_n of_o faith_n he_o pray_v yet_o if_o he_o do_v not_o exercise_v faith_n in_o his_o prayer_n he_o pray_v not_o the_o prayer_n of_o faith_n and_o it_o will_v not_o avail_v james_n 1.6_o if_o any_o man_n lack_v wisdom_n let_v he_o ask_v it_o of_o god_n he_o must_v pray_v to_o god_n for_o it_o but_o say_v he_o let_v he_o pray_v in_o faith_n for_o else_o if_o he_o do_v not_o pray_v in_o faith_n his_o prayer_n will_v not_o avail_v and_o he_o speak_v to_o those_o that_o be_v faithful_a for_o he_o write_v to_o the_o twelve_o tribe_n among_o who_o be_v many_o faithful_a and_o believer_n if_o any_o of_o you_o lack_v wisdom_n let_v he_o ask_v it_o of_o god_n but_o let_v he_o ask_v it_o in_o faith_n nothing_o waver_v for_o else_o his_o prayer_n be_v not_o please_v to_o god_n as_o the_o apostle_n say_v in_o another_o case_n 1_o cor._n 14.19_o i_o have_v rather_o speak_v five_o word_n with_o my_o understanding_n than_o ten_o thousand_o word_n in_o a_o unknown_a tongue_n so_o i_o may_v say_v in_o this_o case_n a_o man_n have_v better_a put_v up_o five_o prayer_n in_o faith_n than_o ten_o thousand_o prayer_n without_o faith_n and_o though_o we_o speak_v but_o a_o few_o word_n in_o prayer_n if_o it_o be_v mix_v with_o faith_n it_o be_v more_o available_a than_o if_o we_o speak_v never_o so_o many_o word_n never_o so_o large_o without_o faith_n quest_n well_o you_o will_v say_v how_o shall_v we_o so_o act_v faith_n in_o prayer_n that_o our_o prayer_n may_v be_v please_v unto_o god_n answ_n for_o answer_v beside_o what_o be_v presuppose_v before_o that_o the_o person_n must_v be_v a_o believer_n and_o also_o pass_v by_o those_o general_a rule_n of_o direction_n lay_v down_o before_o i_o shall_v give_v you_o four_o or_o five_o particular_a direction_n how_o we_o shall_v so_o pray_v in_o faith_n that_o our_o prayer_n may_v be_v please_v unto_o god_n namely_o first_o

scarce_o discern_v but_o afterward_o by_o renew_v act_n of_o faith_n upon_o christ_n and_o by_o the_o effect_n of_o union_n with_o christ_n we_o may_v come_v to_o see_v that_o we_o have_v receive_v christ_n and_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o spiritual_a life_n there_o be_v a_o certain_a moment_n of_o time_n when_o a_o man_n have_v spiritual_a life_n put_v into_o he_o he_o hear_v the_o voice_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o live_v but_o the_o work_n be_v so_o secret_a and_o mysterious_a that_o it_o be_v hard_o for_o we_o to_o say_v that_o just_o such_o a_o day_n such_o a_o hour_n we_o hear_v the_o voice_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o live_v though_o some_o may_v be_v able_a to_o know_v the_o time_n yet_o not_o all_o that_o be_v make_v alive_a by_o christ_n but_o we_o find_v by_o degree_n the_o act_n and_o effect_n of_o spiritual_a life_n whereby_o we_o may_v know_v that_o we_o have_v hear_v the_o voice_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o live_v when_o we_o receive_v christ_n than_o we_o be_v make_v alive_a indeed_o for_o whereas_o we_o be_v under_o the_o sentence_n of_o death_n by_o the_o law_n now_o we_o be_v forgive_v all_o trespass_n and_o have_v the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n impute_v to_o we_o and_o those_o that_o receive_v this_o gift_n of_o righteousness_n be_v not_o only_o free_v from_o hell_n but_o shall_v reign_v in_o life_n by_o jesus_n christ_n rom._n 5.17_o when_o we_o true_o receive_v christ_n we_o be_v sanctify_v also_o together_o with_o the_o faith_n that_o the_o lord_n give_v we_o to_o receive_v christ_n for_o our_o justification_n he_o also_o give_v his_o spirit_n to_o work_v in_o we_o a_o principle_n of_o holiness_n and_o new_a obedience_n that_o we_o may_v be_v both_o in_o respect_v of_o justification_n and_o sanctification_n alive_a from_o the_o dead_a application_n use_v 1_o here_o we_o may_v see_v the_o miserable_a estate_n that_o every_o man_n and_o woman_n be_v in_o that_o have_v not_o hear_v the_o voice_n of_o christ._n brethren_n and_o belove_a do_v you_o believe_v this_o that_o dead_a sinner_n be_v make_v alive_a by_o hear_v the_o voice_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n then_o those_o that_o never_o yet_o hear_v the_o voice_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n they_o be_v yet_o dead_a in_o trespass_n and_o sin_n if_o you_o never_o yet_o hear_v the_o voice_n of_o christ_n than_o you_o be_v dead_a man_n all_o your_o sin_n be_v upon_o you_o you_o be_v under_o the_o sentence_n of_o death_n by_o the_o law_n and_o if_o you_o never_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o voice_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n this_o sentence_n of_o death_n will_v be_v upon_o you_o for_o ever_o and_o if_o you_o never_o yet_o hear_v the_o voice_n of_o christ_n to_o put_v spiritual_a life_n into_o you_o than_o you_o be_v dead_a also_o as_o to_o any_o life_n of_o grace_n and_o holiness_n those_o work_n that_o you_o be_v ready_a to_o be_v proud_a of_o and_o glory_n in_o they_o be_v all_o but_o dead_a work_n and_o you_o do_v not_o true_o serve_v the_o live_a god_n but_o you_o will_v say_v we_o hope_v we_o have_v hear_v the_o voice_n of_o christ_n we_o have_v hear_v many_o able_a minister_n many_o good_a sermon_n we_o have_v have_v the_o word_n open_v to_o we_o answer_v this_o be_v a_o privilege_n indeed_o to_o have_v the_o word_n preach_v to_o you_o but_o it_o be_v not_o the_o voice_n of_o a_o man_n no_o nor_o of_o the_o angel_n of_o heaven_n if_o they_o shall_v speak_v to_o you_o that_o can_v put_v spiritual_a life_n into_o you_o except_o withal_o you_o hear_v the_o voice_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n therefore_o if_o you_o never_o yet_o hear_v the_o voice_n of_o christ_n to_o make_v the_o preach_a of_o the_o gospel_n effectual_a to_o your_o soul_n i_o say_v unto_o every_o such_o person_n as_o god_n say_v to_o abimilech_n gen._n 20.3_o thou_o be_v but_o a_o dead_a man_n thou_o be_v a_o sinner_n and_o the_o wage_n of_o sin_n be_v death_n thou_o be_v a_o condemn_a man_n and_o thou_o have_v greatness_n of_o christ_n power_n he_o be_v able_a to_o make_v dead_a soul_n to_o live_v he_o be_v able_a to_o quicken_v those_o who_o be_v dead_a in_o trespass_n and_o sin_n a_o work_n which_o neither_o man_n nor_o angel_n can_v do_v yea_o know_v and_o take_v notice_n that_o it_o be_v no_o labour_n no_o difficulty_n to_o christ_n to_o make_v dead_a soul_n live_v he_o can_v do_v it_o easy_o grave_a and_o christ_n have_v say_v to_o you_o as_o he_o do_v to_o lazarus_n come_v forth_o and_o so_o you_o have_v be_v raise_v but_o from_o a_o bodily_a death_n to_o live_v again_o this_o have_v be_v a_o great_a wonder_n but_o this_o be_v a_o far_o great_a wonder_n o_o therefore_o bless_v the_o lord_n say_v this_o my_o soul_n be_v dead_a and_o be_v alive_a i_o be_v under_o the_o sentence_n accept_v of_o their_o work_n but_o now_o say_v solomon_n go_v thy_o way_n eat_v thy_o bread_n with_o joy_n and_o drink_v thy_o wine_n with_o a_o merry_a heart_n for_o god_n now_o accept_v thy_o work_n 3._o be_v it_o not_o a_o desirable_a thing_n to_o have_v the_o creature_n ready_a to_o be_v serviceable_a and_o officious_a to_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n that_o there_o be_v never_o a_o creature_n in_o the_o world_n but_o be_v ready_a to_o be_v officious_a and_o serviceable_a to_o he_o though_o possiby_o they_o may_v seem_v to_o be_v averse_a and_o contrary_a and_o cross_v to_o he_o yet_o they_o be_v all_o serviceable_a and_o officious_a to_o he_o to_o have_v every_o thing_n turn_v to_o good_a to_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n whatever_o any_o creature_n do_v to_o he_o it_o turn_v all_o to_o his_o good_a though_o the_o creature_n may_v intend_v otherwise_o the_o wicked_a man_n may_v intend_v to_o persecute_v and_o persecute_v they_o as_o enemy_n but_o when_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n please_v god_n and_o his_o way_n please_v god_n all_o his_o enemy_n shall_v be_v make_v his_o friend_n proverb_n 16.7_o when_o a_o man_n way_n please_v the_o lord_n he_o make_v his_o enemy_n to_o be_v at_o ever_o i_o make_v what_o a_o desirable_a thing_n be_v this_o now_o those_z who_o way_n be_v please_v to_o the_o lord_n god_n do_v hear_v their_o prayer_n they_o have_v access_n to_o the_o throne_n of_o grace_n with_o boldness_n to_o find_v grace_n and_o mercy_n to_o help_v in_o the_o time_n of_o need_n heb._n 4.16_o and_o mark_v the_o apostle_n expression_n in_o 1_o john_n 3.22_o and_o with_o the_o king_n you_o count_v it_o a_o very_a desirable_a thing_n true_o to_o be_v a_o favourite_n in_o the_o court_n of_o heaven_n be_v much_o more_o desirable_a to_o be_v in_o favour_n with_o the_o great_a king_n of_o king_n i_o tell_v you_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n in_o heaven_n be_v as_o life_n to_o a_o man_n soul_n david_n can_v say_v it_o that_o know_v it_o by_o experience_n in_o psalm_n 30.5_o in_o thy_o favour_n be_v life_n nay_o he_o add_v a_o great_a word_n than_o that_o in_o psalm_n 63.3_o thy_o love_a kindness_n be_v better_a than_o life_n there_o be_v nothing_o in_o see_v and_o enjoy_v the_o face_n and_o presence_n of_o god_n for_o ever_o in_o glory_n here_o be_v as_o much_o as_o can_v be_v desire_v and_o these_o two_o thing_n we_o shall_v look_v after_o now_o here_o be_v one_o of_o they_o to_o know_v that_o god_n be_v well_o please_v with_o a_o poor_a creature_n now_o such_o a_o person_n be_v a_o favourite_n of_o heaven_n and_o he_o may_v be_v sure_a of_o it_o if_o he_o be_v in_o favour_n with_o god_n here_o than_o he_o shall_v see_v the_o face_n of_o god_n and_o enjoy_v the_o presence_n of_o god_n hereafter_o that_o be_v the_o 5_o 6._o and_o last_o to_o add_v but_o that_o be_v it_o not_o a_o desirable_a thing_n for_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n to_o be_v able_a to_o look_v death_n in_o the_o face_n with_o comfort_n when_o death_n come_v to_o stare_v he_o in_o the_o face_n when_o he_o shall_v have_v a_o sentence_n of_o death_n pass_v upon_o he_o what_o will_v you_o then_o desire_v above_o all_o the_o thing_n in_o this_o world_n what_o not_o a_o great_a estate_n not_o this_o and_o that_o that_o you_o can_v think_v of_o in_o the_o world_n but_o oh_o that_o i_o may_v have_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n and_o that_o i_o may_v know_v that_o god_n be_v well_o please_v with_o i_o etc._n etc._n then_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n may_v look_v death_n in_o the_o face_n and_o may_v draw_v near_o to_o god_n with_o a_o holy_a boldness_n as_o i_o remember_v hezekiah_n when_o he_o have_v the_o sentence_n of_o death_n upon_o he_o in_o isa_n 38.3_o lord_n say_v he_o remember_v how_o i_o have_v walk_v before_o thou_o in_o truth_n and_o with_o a_o perfect_a heart_n he_o can_v appeal_v to_o god_n that_o his_o way_n be_v please_v to_o he_o and_o now_o he_o can_v resign_v up_o his_o soul_n to_o he_o though_o he_o be_v trouble_v that_o he_o have_v not_o
