outward_o for_o thing_n without_o we_o than_o for_o those_o more_o excellent_a thing_n within_o we_o thus_o many_o a_o one_o say_v i_o thank_v god_n for_o health_n for_o meat_n and_o drink_n etc._n etc._n that_o never_o not_o so_o much_o as_o in_o word_n do_v give_v he_o thanks_o for_o his_o soul_n and_o the_o several_a faculty_n of_o it_o how_o seldom_o have_v god_n any_o praise_n for_o our_o understanding_n our_o judgement_n our_o memory_n our_o reason_n will_n and_o affection_n how_o lame_a will_v our_o soul_n be_v without_o the_o will_n and_o affection_n how_o blind_a without_o reason_n memory_n or_o understanding_n yet_o how_o unthankful_a be_v we_o to_o he_o that_o make_v they_o we_o shall_v râ—ckon_v these_o among_o the_o chief_a of_o god_n blessing_n next_o to_o the_o sanctify_a grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n and_o according_o show_v our_o thankfulness_n for_o they_o to_o his_o glory_n sect_n 2._o ii_o in_o as_o much_o as_o the_o soul_n be_v more_o excellent_a by_o its_o creation_n than_o the_o body_n this_o show_v that_o our_o care_n shall_v be_v great_a for_o the_o soul_n than_o for_o the_o body_n nature_n itself_o may_v teach_v even_o a_o natural_a man_n to_o be_v more_o careful_a of_o the_o natural_a good_a of_o the_o soul_n than_o of_o the_o body_n which_o yet_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o practice_n of_o man_n you_o will_v say_v the_o natural_a man_n perceive_v not_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o spirit_n neither_o can_v he_o discern_v they_o because_o they_o be_v spiritual_o discern_v but_o i_o speak_v now_o of_o such_o natural_a good_a thing_n as_o tend_v to_o the_o enrich_n and_o perfect_v of_o the_o soul_n and_o mind_n of_o man_n namely_o such_o knowledge_n in_o art_n and_o science_n as_o concern_v the_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n how_o many_o do_v prefer_v the_o thing_n of_o the_o body_n above_o these_o but_o the_o principal_a thing_n be_v that_o which_o concern_v the_o spiritual_a happiness_n &_o heavenly_a perfection_n of_o the_o soul._n these_o thing_n which_o be_v the_o most_o excellent_a endowment_n of_o the_o most_o excellent_a part_n of_o man_n be_v less_o regard_v and_o seek_v for_o than_o those_o that_o be_v the_o mean_a appurtenance_n of_o the_o body_n which_o be_v the_o mean_a part_n the_o least_o save_a grace_n be_v a_o thing_n belong_v to_o the_o perfection_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v worth_n more_o than_o the_o whole_a body_n which_o without_o the_o soul_n be_v but_o a_o dead_a lump_n of_o earth_n can_v a_o maid_n forget_v her_o ornament_n oâ—_n a_o bride_n her_o attire_n yet_o my_o people_n have_v forget_v i_o day_n without_o number_n say_v the_o lord_n jer._n 2.32_o what_o a_o shameful_a indignity_n be_v this_o to_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n when_o ornament_n of_o the_o body_n toy_n head-tire_n or_o the_o like_a serve_v to_o dress_v up_o a_o earthly_a carcase_n shalâ—_n be_v better_o remember_v than_o god_n himself_o yea_o shall_v be_v remember_v when_o he_o be_v forget_v thus_o every_o thing_n belong_v to_o the_o body_n be_v think_v of_o but_o the_o soul_n be_v forget_v the_o eye_n must_v be_v please_v the_o ear_n must_v be_v tickle_v the_o palate_n must_v be_v delight_v great_a ado_n must_v be_v make_v for_o back_n and_o belly_n but_o where_o be_v the_o care_n for_o the_o soul_n we_o can_v starve_v that_o yet_o never_o feel_v any_o hunger_n we_o can_v let_v it_o pine_v away_o yet_o never_o complain_v of_o weakness_n we_o can_v suffer_v mortal_a disease_n most_o dangerous_a corruption_n to_o grow_v upon_o our_o soul_n and_o never_o see_v our_o need_n of_o spiritual_a physic_n how_o many_o a_o soul_n be_v swell_v with_o pride_n and_o overgrow_v with_o vile_a affection_n and_o yet_o no_o care_n be_v take_v of_o it_o but_o it_o be_v let_v alone_o as_o if_o all_o be_v well_o yea_o what_o deadly_a wound_n do_v man_n daily_o give_v to_o their_o conscience_n by_o swear_v lie_v drunkenness_n by_o unjust_a and_o indirect_a deal_n with_o other_o yet_o all_o this_o be_v esteem_v as_o nothing_o no_o care_n be_v use_v to_o have_v it_o cure_v nay_o he_o that_o shall_v desire_v to_o cure_v it_o or_o persuade_v they_o from_o these_o desperate_a course_n tend_v to_o the_o destruction_n of_o their_o soul_n shall_v be_v hate_v as_o a_o enemy_n our_o very_a creation_n shall_v make_v we_o ashamed_a of_o this_o folly_n that_o all_o the_o care_n be_v take_v for_o the_o body_n frame_v out_o of_o the_o dust_n and_o the_o soul_n be_v utter_o neglect_v which_o the_o lord_n himself_o breathe_v into_o the_o body_n fâ—ar_v not_o they_o say_v our_o saviour_n mat._n 10.28_o which_o after_o they_o have_v kill_v the_o body_n can_v do_v no_o more_o but_o fear_v bim_n which_o can_v cast_v the_o body_n and_o soul_n into_o hellfire_n yet_o he_o that_o shall_v follow_v our_o saviour_n counsel_n in_o this_o shall_v be_v think_v to_o be_v a_o fool_n by_o many_o man_n he_o that_o will_v rather_o suffer_v harm_n in_o his_o body_n or_o loss_n in_o his_o good_n and_o such_o thing_n as_o concern_v the_o body_n than_o hazard_v his_o soul_n upon_o any_o sin_n which_o be_v death_n to_o the_o soul_n be_v think_v to_o do_v it_o in_o simplicity_n for_o want_n of_o wit_n whereas_o even_a reason_n may_v teach_v we_o that_o the_o soul_n be_v a_o thousand_o time_n better_o than_o the_o body_n and_o the_o misery_n of_o the_o soul_n incomparable_o beyond_o the_o punishment_n that_o can_v befall_v the_o body_n in_o this_o life_n let_v we_o then_o labour_v to_o prevent_v the_o everlasting_a destruction_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o fear_v it_o more_o than_o a_o thousand_o death_n of_o the_o body_n if_o it_o can_v possible_o endure_v so_o many_o think_v that_o a_o precious_a thing_n that_o weigh_v more_o than_o the_o whole_a earth_n in_o the_o balance_n of_o the_o sanctuary_n and_o the_o judgement_n of_o christ._n what_o shall_v it_o profit_v a_o man_n to_o gain_v the_o whole_a world_n and_o lose_v his_o own_o soul_n oh_o learn_v to_o prize_v thy_o soul_n a_o precious_a creature_n and_o immortal_a spirit_n and_o make_v it_o appear_v thou_o make_v more_o reckon_a of_o it_o than_o of_o thy_o body_n thy_o body_n be_v but_o a_o small_a piece_n of_o earth_n but_o the_o whole_a earth_n be_v not_o able_a to_o bring_v forth_o or_o yield_v matter_n for_o one_o soul_n which_o be_v of_o a_o high_a nature_n sect_n 3._o iii_o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o also_o that_o the_o great_a good_a which_o one_o man_n can_v do_v for_o another_o be_v that_o which_o be_v do_v for_o his_o soul._n the_o feed_n clothing_n and_o refresh_n of_o another_o body_n be_v a_o good_a work_n if_o right_o perform_v but_o the_o good_a which_o be_v do_v to_o the_o soul_n be_v a_o better_a work_n as_o the_o soul_n be_v better_a than_o the_o body_n this_o therefore_o shall_v reform_v a_o gross_a folly_n among_o we_o whereby_o it_o be_v conceive_v that_o there_o be_v no_o good_a work_n in_o a_o manner_n beside_o that_o which_o be_v do_v to_o the_o body_n it_o be_v true_a that_o he_o who_o have_v this_o world_n good_a and_o yet_o do_v no_o good_a in_o this_o kind_n do_v not_o true_o perform_v any_o other_o good_a work_n but_o yet_o this_o on_o the_o otherside_n be_v a_o gross_a error_n to_o conceive_v that_o the_o best_a thing_n that_o a_o man_n can_v do_v be_v to_o help_v the_o outward_a man_n and_o that_o the_o do_v of_o this_o be_v enough_o to_o excuse_v he_o from_o do_v good_a to_o the_o soul_n of_o other_o this_o be_v a_o gross_a carnal_a conceit_n it_o be_v as_o much_o as_o to_o affirm_v that_o the_o body_n be_v better_a than_o the_o soul_n earth_n than_o heaven_n mortality_n more_o excellent_a than_o immortality_n and_o a_o lump_n of_o flesh_n more_o worth_a than_o a_o spiritual_a be_v now_o man_n be_v so_o far_o from_o esteem_v that_o best_a which_o be_v do_v for_o the_o good_a of_o the_o soul_n that_o they_o account_v those_o admonition_n and_o reproof_n which_o be_v tender_v to_o they_o for_o this_o purpose_n the_o great_a sign_n of_o ill-will_n that_o any_o man_n can_v show_v to_o other_o no_o man_n be_v account_v a_o worse_a neighbour_n than_o he_o that_o will_v seek_v to_o pluck_v man_n soul_n as_o brand_n out_o of_o the_o fire_n of_o god_n wrath_n by_o show_v they_o the_o danger_n of_o their_o sin_n if_o man_n want_v for_o the_o body_n what_o outcry_n be_v there_o make_v against_o the_o hardness_n of_o other_o heart_n man_n be_v so_o hard-hearted_a now_o a_o day_n that_o they_o will_v not_o give_v a_o poor_a man_n a_o bit_n of_o bread_n they_o will_v see_v he_o starve_v first_o and_o sometime_o
sun_n at_o the_o same_o time_n and_o in_o the_o same_o place_n harden_v one_o thing_n and_o soften_v another_o so_o the_o word_n be_v a_o mean_n to_o soften_v some_o heart_n and_o a_o occasion_n though_o not_o a_o cause_n of_o great_a hardeness_n to_o other_o as_o the_o sun_n kill_v some_o thing_n by_o its_o scorch_a heat_n and_o quicken_v other_o thing_n so_o the_o word_n be_v to_o some_o the_o savour_n of_o life_n unto_o life_n and_o to_o other_o the_o savour_n of_o death_n unto_o death_n many_o other_o meditation_n may_v you_o gather_v by_o compare_v this_o excellent_a creature_n of_o god_n with_o that_o more_o excellent_a word_n of_o god_n sect_n 2._o now_o let_v we_o compare_v the_o sun_n with_o christ_n himself_n he_o be_v call_v the_o sun_n of_o righteousness_n of_o who_o it_o be_v say_v that_o he_o shall_v arise_v with_o heaâ—ing_v in_o his_o wing_n malach._n 4_o 2._o 1._o the_o come_n of_o the_o sun_n glad_v the_o world_n oh_o how_o joyful_a be_v that_o news_n when_o ere_o she_o can_v find_v he_o when_o once_o he_o step_v aside_o as_o the_o sâ—n_n return_v make_v the_o earth_n which_o be_v benumb_v in_o winter_n to_o spring_v and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n again_o so_o when_o christ_n be_v effectual_o present_a and_o unite_a to_o the_o soul_n he_o cause_v a_o spring_n of_o grace_n and_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o arise_v in_o that_o soul._n let_v the_o meditation_n hereof_o move_v thou_o to_o lament_v thy_o barrenness_n and_o cry_v with_o that_o bless_a martyr_n at_o the_o stake_n son_n of_o god_n shine_v upon_o i_o shine_v upon_o my_o soul_n heal_v it_o again_o as_o the_o sun_n never_o so_o set_v as_o not_o to_o shine_v at_o all_o but_o when_o it_o set_v to_o one_o part_n of_o the_o world_n it_o arise_v to_o another_o so_o christ_n never_o withdraw_v his_o light_n from_o the_o whole_a world_n but_o although_o he_o remove_v from_o one_o nation_n yet_o he_o shine_v upon_o another_o he_o have_v a_o church_n in_o all_o age_n 5._o again_o as_o among_o those_o fruit_n which_o grow_v in_o the_o earth_n such_o as_o grow_v most_o towards_o the_o sun_n be_v sweet_a such_o as_o be_v most_o in_o the_o shade_n be_v sour_a so_o among_o those_o christian_n which_o be_v unite_v unto_o christ_n those_o who_o have_v more_o free_a and_o constant_a communion_n with_o he_o partake_v most_o of_o his_o spirit_n keep_v more_o close_a to_o he_o than_o be_v bone_n of_o my_o bone_n and_o flesh_n of_o my_o flesh_n she_o shall_v be_v call_v woman_n because_o she_o be_v take_v out_o of_o man._n he_o have_v a_o perfect_a knowledge_n of_o all_o the_o other_o creature_n here_o below_o he_o know_v the_o tree_n of_o the_o garden_n the_o herb_n grass_n and_o all_o sort_n of_o plant_n and_o the_o natural_a virtue_n and_o property_n that_o be_v in_o they_o he_o know_v the_o beast_n of_o the_o field_n the_o fowl_n of_o the_o air_n and_o fish_n of_o the_o sea_n and_o so_o adam_n give_v fit_a and_o proper_a name_n to_o all_o bird_n and_o beast_n so_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o he_o know_v the_o nature_n and_o several_a kind_n of_o all_o mineral_n metal_n precious_a stone_n etc._n etc._n together_o with_o the_o course_n and_o motion_n of_o the_o heaven_n sun_n moon_n and_o sâ—ars_n thus_o do_v the_o understanding_n which_o be_v the_o eye_n of_o man_n soul_n represent_v the_o infinite_a knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o bear_v its_o image_n and_o those_o thing_n which_o we_o call_v now_o hide_a quality_n in_o the_o creature_n be_v not_o hide_v from_o he_o and_o be_v now_o cover_v from_o we_o not_o in_o regard_n of_o their_o own_o nature_n but_o in_o respect_n of_o our_o blindness_n contrary_a to_o that_o light_n which_o be_v natural_a to_o we_o in_o the_o creation_n but_o all_o this_o while_n man_n have_v no_o knowledge_n of_o evil_n of_o he_o in_o every_o affection_n of_o his_o heart_n and_o soul_n he_o do_v carry_v a_o lively_a image_n of_o his_o maker_n he_o love_v god_n most_o entire_o who_o he_o see_v to_o be_v the_o great_a good_a beyond_o comparison_n and_o he_o love_v whatsoever_o be_v agreeable_a unto_o god_n and_o herein_o he_o do_v resemble_v god_n who_o love_v himself_o with_o a_o most_o perfect_a love_n and_o love_v whatsoever_o be_v agreeable_a to_o himself_o he_o perfect_o hate_v whatsoever_o be_v contrary_a to_o god_n all_o manner_n of_o sin_n and_o transgression_n as_o the_o lord_n also_o hate_v it_o if_o he_o have_v any_o actual_a desire_n it_o be_v most_o holy_a but_o i_o see_v not_o what_o he_o can_v actual_o desire_v in_o that_o estate_n unless_o it_o be_v the_o continuance_n of_o that_o happiness_n which_o he_o have_v and_o that_o near_a communion_n with_o his_o god_n for_o he_o be_v full_a already_o and_o have_v as_o much_o joy_n holiness_n and_o happiness_n as_o he_o be_v capable_a of_o so_o that_o his_o desire_n of_o good_a be_v not_o b._n to_o have_v it_o increase_v but_o only_o to_o have_v it_o continue_v to_o he_o but_o he_o have_v not_o the_o least_o desire_n of_o any_o evil_n his_o joy_n be_v whole_o in_o god_n who_o be_v his_o happiness_n and_o in_o who_o he_o find_v most_o sweet_a and_o full_a contentment_n he_o have_v no_o matter_n of_o grief_n within_o or_o without_o he_o nothing_o that_o shall_v lessen_v his_o joy_n or_o embitter_v his_o comfort_n sin_n which_o be_v the_o fountain_n of_o sorrow_n be_v not_o then_o find_v in_o the_o world_n as_o for_o sorrow_n he_o have_v none_o actual_o stir_v in_o he_o though_o a_o ability_n he_o have_v which_o afterward_o he_o have_v much_o cause_n to_o employ_v his_o trust_n and_o confidence_n be_v in_o god_n and_o he_o believe_v that_o which_o he_o reveal_v to_o he_o so_o long_o as_o he_o stand_v firm_a he_o believe_v that_o threaten_n in_o the_o day_n that_o thou_o eat_v thereof_o thou_o shall_v die_v the_o death_n and_o when_o satan_n by_o his_o lie_a suggestion_n bring_v he_o from_o his_o steadfast_a belief_n of_o this_o truth_n than_o his_o foot_n be_v more_o than_o almost_o go_v his_o step_n have_v more_o than_o well-nigh_o slip_v but_o while_o he_o remain_v in_o his_o state_n of_o creation_n he_o believe_v without_o doubt_v yet_o have_v he_o not_o actual_o faith_n in_o christ_n as_o a_o redeemer_n which_o be_v that_o grace_n whereby_o the_o elect_a in_o this_o new_a covenant_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v save_v for_o be_v free_a from_o sin_n he_o need_v not_o a_o redeemer_n to_o satisfy_v for_o his_o guilt_n by_o his_o death_n yet_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o that_o he_o have_v a_o ability_n to_o believe_v whatsoever_o god_n shall_v reveal_v unto_o he_o and_o so_o to_o have_v believe_v this_o truth_n if_o it_o have_v be_v reveal_v aâ—_n for_o fear_n he_o be_v free_a from_o all_o slavish_a fear_n of_o vengeance_n or_o misery_n perfect_a love_n cast_v out_o all_o such_o kind_n of_o fear_n yet_o i_o be_o persuade_v that_o he_o can_v not_o want_v a_o holy_a humble_a reverence_n and_o submissive_a respect_n unto_o his_o maker_n courage_n he_o have_v in_o perfection_n not_o fear_v all_o the_o world_n while_o he_o know_v that_o god_n be_v with_o he_o as_o for_o desperation_n it_o be_v far_o from_o the_o height_n of_o his_o happiness_n who_o be_v not_o subject_a to_o the_o least_o distrust_n a_o holy_a anger_n a_o divine_a flame_n of_o zeal_n for_o his_o belove_a creator_n glory_n i_o can_v think_v be_v want_v in_o he_o inasmuch_o as_o the_o very_a angel_n be_v call_v seraphim_n or_o fiery_a spirit_n thus_o bright_o do_v the_o image_n of_o god_n shine_v in_o the_o face_n of_o man_n soul_n at_o his_o first_o creation_n and_o though_o he_o be_v infinite_o unequal_a to_o he_o he_o have_v not_o any_o spot_n of_o sin_n or_o impurity_n in_o he_o to_o make_v he_o unlike_a or_o contrary_a to_o he_o that_o make_v he_o god_n make_v man_n upright_o say_v the_o wise_a man_n eccles._n 7.29_o and_o so_o he_o make_v he_o like_o himself_o sect_n 3._o 3._o but_o beside_o these_o excellency_n he_o do_v also_o otherwise_o resemble_v his_o creator_n and_o that_o temper_n of_o the_o body_n for_o though_o the_o lord_n have_v no_o body_n be_v a_o infinite_a and_o most_o glorious_a be_v yet_o these_o thing_n as_o they_o be_v excellency_n and_o thing_n that_o make_v somewhat_o for_o the_o happiness_n of_o man_n they_o be_v in_o some_o sort_n resemblance_n of_o the_o divine_a glory_n and_o excellency_n of_o god_n to_o these_o i_o may_v add_v also_o immortality_n for_o the_o body_n also_o be_v by_o the_o goodness_n of_o its_o maker_n free_a from_o death_n have_v not_o sin_n make_v a_o forfeiture_n of_o his_o life_n
