life_n which_o the_o former_a bare_a union_n of_o their_o soul_n and_o body_n together_o before_o death_n can_v never_o give_v they_o seven_o that_o see_v death_n and_o devil_n be_v thus_o to_o be_v destroy_v by_o christ_n it_o behove_v christ_n to_o be_v a_o mortal_a man_n to_o die_v as_o well_o as_o god-man_n thereby_o to_o conquer_v death_n 2._o from_o the_o verse_n immediate_o precede_v together_o with_o my_o text_n these_o two_o doctrine_n first_o that_o as_o christ_n by_o his_o death_n conquer_v the_o devil_n and_o death_n so_o also_o by_o the_o same_o death_n of_o he_o he_o deliver_v his_o child_n true_a believer_n from_o the_o slavish_a fear_n of_o their_o own_o death_n second_o that_o there_o be_v none_o but_o christ_n child_n can_v have_v solid_a and_o true_a courage_n against_o death_n not_o a_o free_a man_n in_o the_o world_n but_o a_o true_a believer_n all_o the_o rest_n be_v bondslave_n fearful_a the_o devil_n prisoner_n whatever_o fool-hardiness_n there_o may_v be_v in_o the_o world_n false_o call_v valour_n and_o contempt_n of_o death_n yet_o it_o be_v far_o exceed_v in_o the_o same_o kind_n by_o the_o more_o sinewy_a strength_n and_o dare_a boldness_n of_o many_o brute_n beast_n and_o in_o they_o rather_o it_o be_v valour_n in_o man_n madness_n the_o brute_n dare_v to_o die_v but_o man_n more_o void_a of_o strength_n and_o reason_n dare_v die_v and_o be_v damn_v too_o but_o sure_a all_o such_o man_n in_o their_o natural_a condition_n be_v past_a feeling_n or_o coward_n only_o to_o themselves_o so_o unreasonable_o dastardly_a as_o to_o dare_v rather_o to_o look_v death_n in_o the_o face_n than_o their_o own_o awaken_v conscience_n for_o they_o that_o serious_o meditate_v and_o know_v both_o themselves_o and_o death_n and_o devil_n instead_o of_o pretend_v valour_n must_v needs_o yield_v themselves_o captive_n to_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n for_o stout_a creature_n than_o sinful_a wicked_a unregenerate_a man_n even_o the_o devil_n themselves_o under_o guilt_n do_v fear_n and_o tremble_v 3._o from_o my_o text_n alone_o only_o these_o three_o doctrine_n first_o that_o there_o be_v a_o natural_a fear_n of_o death_n as_o well_o as_o of_o the_o devil_n root_v in_o all_o man_n heart_n always_o whilst_o they_o be_v out_o of_o christ_n at_o least_o i_o say_v always_o though_o not_o always_o feel_v yet_o easy_o awaken_v as_o by_o rage_a guilt_n a_o tempt_a devil_n and_o sore_a judgement_n inflict_v on_o they_o by_o a_o angry_a yet_o most_o righteous_a god_n visit_v their_o iniquity_n second_o that_o this_o fear_n put_v man_n in_o bondage_n so_o that_o they_o dare_v not_o by_o reason_n of_o sensible_a and_o evident_a danger_n of_o distraction_n meditate_v serious_o upon_o death_n god_n judgement_n or_o hell_n so_o clear_o and_o confess_o deserve_v by_o themselves_o three_o that_o christ_n be_v the_o great_a deliverer_n of_o his_o people_n from_o the_o slavish_a fear_n of_o death_n i_o shall_v god_n assist_v as_o it_o concern_v i_o due_o eye_n all_o along_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n by_o the_o which_o death_n of_o his_o he_o do_v deliver_v his_o people_n from_o the_o fear_n of_o their_o own_o death_n yet_o intend_v to_o speak_v as_o brief_o and_o with_o what_o advantage_n i_o can_v from_o the_o scripture_n to_o this_o singular_o comfortable_a doctrine_n i_o shall_v take_v the_o latitude_n which_o the_o absolute_a consideration_n of_o the_o text_n clear_o give_v i_o according_a to_o the_o doctrine_n already_o lay_v down_o in_o these_o word_n doctrine_n ☞_o ☞_o that_o christ_n be_v the_o great_a deliverer_n of_o his_o people_n from_o their_o slavish_a fear_n of_o death_n it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o this_o great_a king_n of_o saint_n and_o prince_n of_o peace_n that_o all_o his_o people_n shall_v live_v up_o to_o their_o privilege_n and_o his_o honour_n not_o as_o sin_n much_o less_o as_o the_o devil_n or_o death_n slave_n but_o as_o child_n christ_n be_v call_v the_o everlasting_a father_n and_o here_o before_o my_o text_n he_o himself_o own_v and_o answer_n to_o that_o name_n behold_v i_o and_o the_o child_n which_o god_n have_v give_v i_o christ_n great_a design_n be_v to_o make_v his_o child_n child_n indeed_o free_a indeed_o from_o the_o servile_a fear_n of_o death_n this_o prince_n of_o life_n as_o he_o be_v call_v act_v 3.15_o will_v not_o have_v his_o child_n slave_n to_o death_n no_o nor_o to_o the_o prince_n of_o death_n the_o deviâ—_n the_o method_n in_o prosecute_a this_o truth_n shall_v be_v by_o the_o lord_n concurrence_n first_o to_o prove_v that_o the_o lord_n christ_n be_v such_o a_o deliverer_n second_o to_o show_v how_o he_o actual_o manage_n this_o deliverance_n of_o his_o saint_n from_o their_o fear_n of_o death_n three_o to_o apply_v first_o then_o to_o prove_v that_o the_o lord_n christ_n be_v such_o a_o deliverer_n for_o such_o a_o glory_n of_o our_o bless_a saviour_n be_v high_o worth_a the_o behold_n yea_o man_n and_o angel_n display_v and_o therefore_o not_o a_o needless_a thing_n to_o prove_v it_o be_v never_o sufficient_o see_v and_o admire_v this_o considerable_a and_o comfortable_a part_n of_o the_o saint_n deliverance_n by_o christ_n be_v one_o of_o the_o fair_a and_o rare_a jewel_n in_o the_o diadem_n of_o this_o king_n of_o saint_n he_o be_v the_o deliverer_n of_o his_o people_n from_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n therefore_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v a_o little_a below_o my_o text_n consider_v then_o the_o apostle_n and_o high_a priest_n of_o our_o profession_n christ_n jesus_n consider_v well_o your_o great_a messiah_n o_o saint_n behold_v your_o king_n see_v then_o first_o he_o have_v power_n enough_o thus_o to_o deliver_v be_v he_o not_o god_n man_n and_o indeed_o what_o be_v a_o jesus_n a_o saviour_n a_o deliverer_n without_o power_n but_o can_v his_o power_n conquer_v his_o people_n enemy_n and_o their_o fear_n too_o with_o jesus_n all_o this_o be_v possible_a and_o more_o too_o see_v the_o power_n of_o his_o sceptre_n heb._n 7.25_o wherefore_o he_o be_v able_a to_o save_v they_o to_o the_o uttermost_a that_o come_v unto_o god_n by_o he_o not_o only_o then_o from_o all_o enemy_n but_o from_o all_o fear_n in_o the_o way_n to_o the_o uttermost_a as_o from_o the_o misery_n of_o death_n itself_o so_o from_o its_o kill_a fear_n now_o consider_v a_o little_a will_v deliverance_n from_o the_o soul-disquieting_a fear_n of_o death_n be_v look_v upon_o and_o judge_v a_o proper_a real_a yea_o great_a deliverance_n and_o shall_v not_o jesus_n be_v the_o author_n and_o finisher_n of_o it_o who_o can_v save_v to_o the_o uttermost_a this_o be_v not_o sure_o below_o or_o above_o his_o power_n that_o can_v deliver_v to_o the_o uttermost_a nothing_o true_o deserve_v the_o name_n of_o deliverance_n but_o this_o expression_n to_o the_o uttermost_a comprehend_v it_o luke_n 1.74_o these_o you_o see_v deliverance_n out_o of_o the_o hand_n of_o enemy_n and_o serve_v without_o fear_n go_v natural_o together_o and_o will_v christ_n separate_v they_o now_o can_v christ_n thus_o deliver_v from_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n because_o to_o the_o uttermost_a those_o that_o come_v unto_o god_n by_o he_o and_o yet_o a_o soul_n that_o come_v unto_o god_n by_o he_o never_o so_o deliver_v how_o be_v it_o possible_a the_o philosopher_n will_v laugh_v at_o this_o doubt_n or_o denial_n with_o his_o frustra_fw-la est_fw-la potentia_fw-la quae_fw-la non_fw-la producitur_fw-la in_o actum_fw-la that_o power_n be_v in_o vain_a that_o be_v never_o exercise_v can_v of_o righteousness_n be_v rise_v with_o heal_v under_o his_o wing_n upon_o any_o poor_a soul_n the_o warmth_n of_o his_o continual_a beam_n ever_o and_o anon_o break_v through_o all_o cloud_n and_o afford_v bread_n break_v and_o ready_a prepare_v to_o refresh_v and_o revive_v both_o the_o live_n and_o die_v his_o blood_n shed_v be_v the_o best_a weapon_n salve_n or_o plague-water_n the_o only_a preservative_n of_o all_o those_o that_o have_v receive_v the_o arrow_n of_o the_o almighty_a and_o the_o messenger_n of_o death_n whether_o we_o consider_v famine_n wound_n or_o plague_n of_o man_n own_o heart_n or_o body_n but_o it_o be_v comfort_n against_o death_n in_o general_n and_o the_o fear_n of_o it_o that_o i_o design_n for_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o saint_n timorous_a soul_n partaker_n with_o i_o of_o flesh_n and_o blood_n who_o must_v certain_o and_o may_v sudden_o die_v and_o bless_v eternal_o be_v the_o lord_n jesus_n it_o be_v his_o grand_a and_o special_a design_n who_o because_o the_o child_n do_v partake_v of_o flesh_n and_o blood_n and_o too_o much_o communicate_v in_o its_o fear_n of_o death_n do_v himself_o take_v part_n of_o the_o same_o he_o live_v and_o die_v that_o so_o feel_v the_o bitterness_n both_o of_o the_o life_n and_o death_n of_o flesh_n he_o may_v as_o comfort_v his_o people_n in_o all_o their_o tribulation_n so_o especial_o deliver_v they_o who_o through_o fear_n of_o death_n be_v all_o their_o life_n time_n subject_a to_o bondage_n i_o need_v not_o tell_v you_o a_o thing_n so_o obvious_a how_o that_o christ_n in_o his_o high_a pre-eminence_n be_v the_o theme_n of_o this_o epistle_n to_o the_o hebrew_n which_o after_o a_o glorious_a and_o singular_a manner_n display_v the_o honour_n and_o excellency_n of_o christ_n before_o the_o eye_n of_o all_o both_o jew_n and_o gentile_n who_o be_v too_o too_o prone_a to_o have_v very_o base_a and_o low_a thought_n of_o his_o incarnation_n and_o humanity_n much_o more_o of_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n i_o shall_v therefore_o more_o narrow_o acquaint_v you_o with_o the_o import_n of_o this_o text_n the_o which_o with_o the_o precede_a verse_n be_v enough_o by_o god_n light_n to_o give_v we_o a_o soul_n animate_v and_o transform_v view_n of_o christ_n where_o we_o may_v see_v he_o triumph_v with_o all_o his_o elect_a soldier_n some_o worthy_n especial_o over_o death_n and_o hell_n and_o the_o devil_n too_o for_o asmuch_o then_n as_o the_o child_n be_v partaker_n of_o flesh_n and_o blood_n he_o also_o himself_o likewise_o take_v part_n of_o the_o same_o that_o to_o bondage_n with_o the_o continuance_n thereof_o all_o their_o life_n time_n 2._o their_o deliverance_n by_o christ_n and_o deliver_v they_o who_o through_o fear_n of_o death_n be_v all_o their_o life_n time_n subject_a to_o bondage_n where_o you_o see_v their_o deliverance_n be_v very_o comprehensive_a and_o deliver_v they_o their_o person_n be_v glorious_o deliver_v whether_o you_o respect_v death_n itself_o the_o power_n and_o sting_v of_o death_n or_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n or_o that_o bondage_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o those_o fear_n which_o render_v their_o life_n most_o uncomfortable_a the_o deliverance_n by_o christ_n bate_v none_o of_o these_o now_o there_o be_v some_o word_n and_o passage_n in_o my_o text_n to_o be_v open_v that_o i_o may_v clear_v my_o way_n to_o the_o doctrine_n which_o be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o this_o bless_a scripture_n be_v all_o such_o as_o high_o concern_v all_o mortal_a man_n especial_o in_o a_o time_n of_o great_a mortality_n 1._o then_o what_o death_n be_v this_o which_o be_v bring_v in_o here_o as_o a_o king_n of_o fear_n so_o terrible_a that_o the_o devil_n seem_v to_o be_v but_o its_o viceroy_n who_o will_v never_o be_v so_o dread_v be_v it_o not_o for_o death_n from_o which_o he_o receive_v power_n to_o captivate_v and_o tyrannize_v over_o the_o poor_a conscience_n of_o man_n that_o be_v cow_v with_o guilt_n and_o enfeeble_v with_o the_o hand-writing_n against_o they_o in_o their_o own_o breast_n who_o when_o most_o carnal_o asleep_a do_v notwithstanding_o now_o and_o then_o sad_o dream_v of_o some_o sudden_a reckon_n and_o dreadful_a execution_n 2._o what_o be_v these_o fear_n see_v fear_n of_o death_n be_v so_o natural_a to_o and_o common_a among_o the_o saint_n 3._o what_o be_v mean_v by_o be_v subject_n to_o bondage_n be_v not_o all_o saint_n more_o or_o less_o subject_a to_o many_o sad_a fear_n of_o death_n even_o those_o that_o sometime_o can_v vaunt_v over_o it_o with_o the_o apostle_n paul_n may_v sometime_o also_o fear_v least_o at_o death_n they_o suffer_v shipwreck_n and_o become_v castaway_n 4._o what_o be_v mean_v by_o all_o their_o life_n time_n what_o deliverance_n if_o all_o their_o life_n time_n so_o subject_a 5._o what_o be_v this_o deliverance_n wrought_v thus_o for_o the_o people_n of_o god_n by_o the_o power_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o transaction_n of_o his_o death_n to_o these_o reasonable_a demand_n brief_o first_o what_o death_n be_v this_o here_o mean_v it_o be_v unquestionable_o natural_a death_n the_o dissolution_n or_o departure_n of_o the_o soul_n from_o the_o body_n the_o body_n one_o way_n to_o the_o dust_n and_o grave_n the_o soul_n another_o way_n even_o to_o god_n that_o give_v it_o this_o be_v the_o death_n here_o speak_v of_o the_o more_o terrible_a for_o the_o certain_a judgement_n of_o all_o and_o eternal_a damnation_n of_o most_o immediate_o consequent_a thereupon_o now_o inasmuch_o as_o a_o little_a before_o the_o text_n flesh_n and_o blood_n be_v mention_v which_o most_o shrink_v from_o death_n as_o that_o part_n of_o a_o good_a man_n nature_n that_o suffer_v by_o death_n the_o only_a damage_n and_o in_o as_o much_o as_o christ_n therefore_o take_v part_n of_o the_o same_o flesh_n and_o blood_n and_o so_o therein_o taste_v death_n for_o every_o man_n it_o be_v but_o plain_o absurd_a to_o doubt_v that_o natural_a death_n be_v here_o mean_v second_o what_o be_v the_o fear_n of_o death_n here_o speak_v of_o see_v fear_n of_o death_n be_v so_o natural_a to_o and_o common_a among_o the_o saint_n the_o text_n will_v answer_v for_o i_o the_o latter_a expression_n in_o the_o word_n resolve_v you_o they_o be_v slavish_a fear_n not_o natural_a or_o filial_a such_o fear_n as_o when_o in_o any_o measure_n in_o the_o saint_n have_v a_o certain_a tang_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n fear_n which_o do_v debase_v the_o ingenuity_n and_o confidence_n of_o child_n as_o saint_n be_v call_v just_a before_o the_o text_n for_o as_o much_o then_o as_o the_o child_n be_v partaker_n of_o flesh_n and_o blood_n and_o so_o thereupon_o indeed_o be_v natural_o subject_a to_o great_a fear_n and_o by_o sin_n to_o much_o bondage_n too_o in_o their_o sense_n and_o apprehension_n of_o death_n therefore_o christ_n take_v part_n of_o their_o flesh_n that_o he_o may_v deliver_v those_o who_o by_o reason_n of_o their_o flesh_n and_o blood_n be_v subject_a to_o great_a fear_n of_o death_n that_o so_o he_o may_v recover_v
to_o think_v that_o many_o who_o do_v so_o much_o and_o cry_v lord_n lord_n lord_n have_v mercy_n on_o we_o yet_o be_v not_o thereupon_o to_o be_v judge_v in_o so_o good_a a_o condition_n and_o in_o a_o unquestionable_a state_n of_o salvation_n therefore_o i_o conceive_v a_o right_a understanding_n of_o such_o expression_n may_v be_v get_v by_o take_v notice_n of_o holy_a john_n palpable_a intent_n and_o the_o drift_n of_o his_o speech_n upon_o the_o forementioned_a occasion_n the_o apostle_n therefore_o for_o the_o better_a understanding_n of_o such_o mistake_a spirit_n assert_n in_o sum_n thus_o much_o that_o indeed_o those_o only_a that_o confess_v jesus_n to_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o will_v not_o deny_v he_o in_o fear_n of_o death_n or_o torment_v be_v to_o be_v take_v for_o true_a christian_n and_o happy_a soul_n indeed_o upon_o the_o same_o account_n he_o assert_n also_o that_o perfect_a love_n cast_v out_o fear_n that_o be_v the_o torment_a fear_n of_o death_n or_o danger_n as_o tertullian_n evince_v in_o his_o scorpiacum_n or_o antidote_n against_o the_o gnostic_n speak_v thus_o johannes_n negate_fw-la timorem_fw-la esse_fw-la in_o dilectione_n aright_o will_v not_o be_v loath_a to_o die_v for_o christ_n or_o to_o die_v and_o go_v to_o christ_n that_o spouse_n who_o be_v true_o sick_a of_o love_n for_o christ_n think_v no_o cure_n of_o that_o sickness_n like_o death_n even_o to_o depart_v and_o to_o be_v with_o christ_n to_o be_v ever_o with_o the_o lord_n her_o bless_a bridegroom_n three_o christ_n by_o give_v his_o people_n that_o excellent_a grace_n of_o hope_n kill_v the_o fear_n of_o death_n 2_o thes_n 2.16_o there_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o good_a hope_n through_o his_o grace_n be_v not_o only_o his_o gift_n but_o therewith_o also_o or_o thereby_o everlasting_a consolation_n which_o therefore_o be_v neither_o to_o be_v interrupt_v by_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n or_o discontinue_v by_o death_n itself_o yea_o and_o by_o it_o saint_n on_o earth_n fit_a together_o in_o heavenly_a place_n in_o christ_n jesus_n now_o you_o know_v hope_n be_v nature_n be_v contrary_a to_o fear_v he_o who_o hope_v for_o his_o saint_n from_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n moses_n yea_o aaron_n also_o both_o in_o the_o same_o condition_n as_o to_o death_n but_o moses_n only_o i_o set_v before_o your_o eye_n as_o enough_o to_o fill_v they_o for_o he_o be_v the_o great_a captain_n or_o lord_n general_n that_o ever_o have_v the_o conduct_n of_o a_o army_n and_o whole_a nation_n for_o it_o be_v not_o the_o title_n but_o usefulness_n of_o a_o man_n and_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n with_o a_o person_n that_o make_v he_o true_o renown_v and_o famous_a of_o moses_n it_o be_v say_v deut._n 34.10_o there_o arise_v not_o a_o prophet_n since_o in_o israel_n like_v unto_o moses_n who_o the_o lord_n know_v face_n to_o face_n well_o god_n himself_o bring_v to_o this_o man_n the_o message_n of_o death_n and_o tell_v he_o concern_v this_o scripture_n i_o may_v say_v true_o in_o the_o word_n of_o the_o apostle_n paul_n when_o he_o be_v comfort_v timorous_a soul_n under_o their_o fear_n of_o judgement_n and_o so_o very_o pertinent_o to_o my_o business_n in_o hand_n behold_v here_o how_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n himself_o and_o god_n even_o our_o father_n who_o have_v love_v we_o and_o give_v we_o everlasting_a consolation_n and_o good_a hope_n through_o grace_n do_v here_o comfort_v your_o heart_n by_o the_o most_o warm_a breathe_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n the_o comforter_n who_o indeed_o be_v then_o a_o comforter_n when_o all_o else_o be_v but_o miserable_a one_o his_o cordial_n here_o be_v very_o singular_a and_o sovereign_a the_o ingredient_n very_o precious_a and_o various_a and_o not_o a_o some_o from_o the_o text_n itself_o only_o 1._o the_o fourteen_o verse_n exhibit_v to_o you_o these_o seven_o doctrine_n first_o that_o the_o unconceivable_a love_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n to_o his_o dear_a child_n make_v he_o come_v down_o on_o earth_n and_o become_v man_n second_o that_o christ_n in_o his_o humane_a nature_n be_v as_o very_a man_n as_o any_o of_o the_o elect_n his_o flesh_n and_o blood_n not_o only_o be_v like_o we_o but_o part_n of_o our_o substance_n he_o also_o himself_o likewise_o take_v part_n of_o the_o same_o so_o that_o he_o himself_o be_v of_o the_o same_o stock_n of_o adam_n and_o eve_n as_o sure_o and_o very_o as_o any_o of_o we_o three_o that_o sinner_n out_o of_o christ_n be_v under_o the_o sentence_n of_o death_n such_o as_o be_v not_o god_n child_n be_v under_o the_o devil_n their_o father_n cruel_a severity_n that_o be_v under_o the_o power_n of_o death_n or_o that_o satan_n have_v the_o power_n of_o death_n over_o all_o such_o as_o be_v not_o deliver_v by_o christ_n from_o his_o power_n four_o that_o christ_n have_v destroy_v this_o his_o power_n for_o the_o sole_a benefit_n of_o his_o child_n true_a believer_n five_o that_o the_o way_n how_o christ_n overcome_v satan_n and_o destroy_v his_o power_n be_v by_o his_o own_o death_n or_o christ_n by_o his_o own_o death_n conquer_v that_o tyrant_n the_o devil_n which_o destruction_n of_o the_o devil_n by_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n because_o allege_v here_o by_o the_o apostle_n as_o christ_n intermediate_v end_n in_o subserviency_n to_o his_o grand_a design_n of_o deliver_v his_o child_n from_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n i_o shall_v only_o a_o little_a pause_n upon_o the_o devil_n be_v no_o soon_o our_o enemy_n but_o christ_n be_v his_o the_o devil_n say_v to_o repeal_n or_o in_o the_o one_o he_o lie_v against_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n threat_n and_o the_o condemn_a power_n of_o the_o law_n in_o the_o other_o against_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n promise_n and_o of_o his_o incomparable_o glorious_a act_n of_o indemnity_n he_o think_v indeed_o see_v he_o can_v not_o be_v exalt_v above_o god_n he_o will_v become_v a_o petty_a tyrant_n as_o his_o ambition_n thirst_v over_o poor_a mankind_n and_o thereupon_o labour_v to_o bring_v man_n by_o sin_n under_o his_o power_n the_o power_n of_o death_n but_o wherein_o he_o deal_v proud_o christ_n be_v above_o he_o christ_n in_o man_n nature_n dye_v for_o man_n so_o that_o though_o in_o as_o much_o as_o christ_n die_v the_o devil_n bruise_v his_o heel_n yet_o christ_n by_o his_o own_o death_n defeat_v his_o design_n and_o bruise_v his_o serpent-head_n which_o he_o will_v not_o be_v able_a to_o get_v heal_v for_o ever_o whereas_o christ_n only_o be_v dead_a but_o be_v alive_a and_o life_n for_o evermore_o as_o before_o by_o death_n to_o vanquish_v he_o so_o eternal_o by_o the_o power_n of_o his_o life_n and_o reign_n to_o keep_v he_o under_o in_o chain_n of_o darkness_n and_o also_o to_o deliver_v his_o child_n from_o his_o power_n of_o death_n who_o though_o they_o sleep_v yet_o shall_v wake_v again_o eternal_o sixthly_a that_o christ_n death_n conquer_v the_o saint_n death_n even_o the_o power_n of_o it_o lie_v much_o in_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o devil_n be_v destroy_v with_o he_o death_n be_v our_o enemy_n christ_n encounter_v it_o for_o we_o in_o our_o stead_n verse_n 9_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o jesus_n say_v thus_o that_o he_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n shall_v taste_v death_n for_o every_o man_n for_o he_o he_o conquer_v our_o enemy_n death_n by_o die_v up_o its_o self_n and_o grin_v upon_o a_o die_a saint_n yet_o behold_v all_o its_o venome-teeth_n be_v dash_v out_o by_o the_o power_n of_o christ_n and_o its_o sting_n to_o seek_v it_o lay_v only_o upon_o he_o a_o cold_a and_o feeble_a hand_n but_o can_v break_v a_o bone_n as_o i_o may_v say_v not_o do_v the_o least_o hurt_n it_o only_a rock_n the_o body_n asleep_o and_o make_v way_n for_o the_o soul_n to_o enter_v into_o its_o master_n joy_n unspeakable_a indeed_o and_o full_a of_o glory_n as_o the_o devil_n who_o christ_n rebuke_v in_o the_o possess_v tear_v and_o rend_v the_o body_n it_o be_v true_a yet_o dare_v not_o but_o come_v forth_o and_o depart_v and_o though_o the_o body_n be_v leave_v on_o the_o ground_n as_o dead_a yet_o it_o quick_o appear_v to_o be_v alive_a so_o death_n may_v tear_v and_o shake_v a_o saint_n body_n at_o its_o dissolution_n and_o leave_v it_o for_o dead_a on_o the_o ground_n yet_o it_o have_v no_o more_o to_o do_v to_o touch_v it_o the_o very_a body_n as_o the_o grain_n sow_o in_o the_o earth_n be_v a_o spring_v up_o though_o at_o first_o flow_o with_o a_o new_a life_n i_o say_v the_o body_n shall_v in_o spite_n of_o death_n live_v again_o glorious_o at_o the_o resurrection_n and_o never_o die_v because_o death_n be_v conquer_v and_o destroy_v for_o ever_o by_o christ_n death_n who_o be_v dead_a but_o be_v alive_a for_o evermore_o amen_n neither_o be_v the_o saint_n sleep_v at_o their_o dissolution_n a_o bare_a piece_n of_o rhetoric_n but_o a_o most_o real_a notion_n wicked_a man_n body_n may_v be_v say_v indeed_o most_o proper_o to_o suffer_v death_n for_o though_o they_o also_o shall_v rise_v again_o yet_o it_o be_v to_o lead_v a_o life_n in_o those_o raise_a body_n worse_a than_o death_n but_o
of_o death_n have_v be_v evident_o prove_v his_o design_n be_v manifest_a in_o the_o text._n he_o assume_v humane_a nature_n that_o he_o may_v deliver_v his_o saint_n from_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n and_o whilst_o he_o bear_v about_o he_o that_o humane_a nature_n how_o can_v he_o but_o be_v constant_a to_o his_o design_n in_o take_v it_o up_o he_o that_o live_v for_o ever_o to_o make_v intercession_n for_o his_o people_n have_v not_o in_o vain_a the_o key_n of_o hell_n and_o of_o death_n five_o he_o have_v accomplish_v and_o achieve_v such_o thing_n for_o his_o child_n that_o natural_o bring_v about_o this_o their_o freedom_n from_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n to_o suggest_v the_o most_o weighty_a first_o he_o die_v not_o only_o in_o their_o nature_n but_o in_o their_o stead_n he_o taste_v death_n for_o they_o so_o that_o as_o to_o they_o it_o may_v be_v true_o say_v mankind_n die_v in_o he_o their_o representative_a that_o formidable_a death_n which_o man_n deserve_v christ_n have_v undergo_v it_o all_o what_o fear_v of_o death_n can_v then_o be_v reasonable_o yield_v to_o it_o be_v christ_n that_o die_v what_o reason_n to_o fear_v that_o which_o another_o have_v feel_v for_o we_o on_o purpose_n that_o we_o to_o be_v sure_o shall_v never_o feel_v any_o such_o thing_n what_o be_v true_o formidable_a in_o death_n be_v past_a and_o go_v and_o no_o more_o to_o be_v fear_v than_o a_o escape_v danger_n second_o christ_n have_v by_o his_o death_n merit_v saint_n freedom_n from_o the_o fear_n of_o their_o own_o he_o lay_v down_o his_o life_n as_o the_o price_n of_o this_o privilege_n what_o saint_n then_o dare_v fear_n death_n that_o consider_v the_o unquestionable_a sufficiency_n of_o the_o value_n of_o christ_n death_n for_o the_o purchase_n this_o great_a privilege_n for_o he_o that_o he_o shall_v not_o fear_v death_n for_o a_o saint_n to_o fear_v death_n with_o a_o bondage_n servile_a fear_n be_v as_o much_o as_o to_o say_v christ_n have_v not_o bleed_v enough_o to_o purchase_v this_o my_o freedom_n from_o these_o fear_n but_o i_o must_v bleed_v too_o to_o raise_v the_o price_n god_n forbid_v that_o any_o saint_n doubt_n or_o fear_n shall_v ever_o be_v find_v so_o palpable_o guilty_a of_o undervalue_v the_o blood_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o price_n of_o their_o redemption_n three_o christ_n by_o his_o death_n have_v take_v away_o the_o only_a true_a fundamental_a reason_n and_o occasion_n of_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n and_o that_o be_v the_o condemn_a power_n of_o the_o law_n the_o sting_n of_o that_o death_n sale_n the_o apostle_n which_o man_n so_o dread_a it_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o sin_n sin_n indeed_o unpardoned_a well_o but_o that_o be_v pardon_v in_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n and_o therefore_o say_v he_o thanks_o be_v to_o god_n who_o give_v we_o the_o victory_n that_o be_v over_o death_n through_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n well_o but_o how_o the_o forego_v word_n show_v it_o 1_o cor._n 15.56_o 57_o the_o sting_n of_o death_n be_v sin_n true_a but_o the_o strength_n of_o sin_n be_v the_o law_n oh_o there_o there_o be_v the_o bitterness_n the_o law_n sharpen_v and_o strengthen_v the_o sting_n of_o death_n sin_n oh_o this_o condemn_a power_n of_o a_o break_a law_n this_o this_o torment_v the_o sinner_n heart_n with_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n well_o but_o observe_v the_o strength_n of_o sin_n be_v the_o law_n but_o thanks_o be_v to_o god_n who_o give_v we_o the_o victory_n that_o be_v by_o weaken_v the_o strength_n of_o sin_n and_o blunt_v the_o be_v by_o faith_n become_v christ_n child_n though_o the_o devil_n lie_v and_o so_o labour_v to_o terrify_v a_o saint_n say_v come_v come_v away_o thou_o have_v break_v the_o law_n its_o sentence_n and_o doom_n be_v pass_v upon_o thou_o come_v to_o prison_n thou_o must_v sure_o and_o sudden_o die_v yet_o all_o this_o time_n the_o law_n say_v no_o such_o thing_n and_o yet_o it_o flatter_v none_o be_v most_o true_a and_o just_a but_o it_o take_v good_a notice_n that_o christ_n die_v and_o it_o be_v full_o satis_fw-la fie_v i_o will_v assure_v you_o the_o law_n will_v not_o suggest_v the_o oh_o sad_a and_o bitter_a full_o persuade_v he_o that_o he_o be_v visit_v with_o the_o plague_n for_o such_o a_o particular_a sin_n that_o he_o have_v commit_v and_o therefore_o that_o he_o shall_v the_o true_o aggravate_v case_n of_o hezekiah_n fourteen_o year_n and_o a_o half_a more_o or_o less_o after_o his_o great_a recovery_n and_o when_o death_n come_v with_o the_o experience_n of_o its_o former_a success_n in_o fright_v he_o yea_o and_o come_v effectual_o indeed_o to_o he_o yet_o hark_v no_o chatter_v so_o the_o objection_n of_o hezekiah_n a_o good_a man_n that_o have_v a_o good_a heart_n and_o a_o good_a life_n have_v do_v that_o which_o be_v good_a in_o god_n sight_n i_o say_v the_o objection_n of_o his_o fear_v death_n be_v sufficient_o answer_v with_o his_o not_o fear_v death_n when_o he_o come_v to_o die_v in_o good_a earnest_n which_o though_o it_o be_v not_o record_v be_v not_o to_o be_v scruple_v because_o it_o must_v be_v conclude_v that_o all_o who_o die_v in_o but_o little_a appearance_n against_o the_o doctrine_n for_o i_o discourse_n of_o the_o constant_a or_o most_o usual_a temper_n of_o christ_n redeem_v once_o all_o along_o their_o life_n time_n who_o know_v indeed_o it_o be_v not_o long_o before_o they_o must_v certain_o die_v yet_o have_v no_o certain_a news_n tell_v they_o when_z the_o courage_n of_o the_o saint_n life_n be_v that_o which_o prove_v and_o honour_n our_o redeemer_n effectual_a power_n of_o redemption_n and_o he_o also_o that_o make_v he_o redemption_n to_o the_o saint_n now_o if_o the_o saint_n be_v redeem_v by_o christ_n do_v serve_v god_n without_o fear_n all_o the_o day_n of_o their_o life_n though_o at_o the_o last_o hour_n there_o may_v be_v some_o little_a surprise_n of_o fear_n yet_o what_o be_v that_o to_o object_n against_o such_o a_o doctrine_n alas_o who_o know_v not_o but_o that_o sharp_a sickness_n and_o tedious_a death_n enfeeble_v the_o spirit_n so_o that_o whatever_o the_o patient_n heart_n be_v think_v or_o do_v much_o yet_o i_o be_o confident_a that_o as_o great_a extraordinary_a joy_n accompany_v but_o few_o saint_n just_a at_o their_o departure_n out_o of_o this_o world_n so_o also_o be_o i_o as_o sure_o that_o great_a fear_n at_o that_o nick_n or_o point_n of_o death_n do_v accompany_v none_o of_o they_o fear_n may_v assault_v they_o but_o not_o possess_v they_o saint_n die_v at_o least_o resist_v they_o which_o be_v even_o then_o to_o be_v actual_o deliver_v from_o their_o captivate_a power_n but_o because_o fear_v of_o death_n after_o all_o that_o can_v be_v say_v seem_v to_o be_v the_o common_a temper_n of_o god_n child_n as_o well_o as_o the_o devil_n slave_n i_o shall_v labour_v to_o show_v some_o sufficient_a difference_n in_o their_o fear_v death_n or_o any_o
