smack_n or_o taste_v of_o they_o and_o even_o herein_o also_o appear_v christ_n love_n that_o he_o be_v please_v to_o stoop_v down_o so_o low_a unto_o we_o and_o in_o such_o base_a term_n to_o express_v unto_o we_o such_o excellent_a thing_n but_o yet_o let_v we_o a_o little_a more_o particular_o examine_v the_o word_n that_o word_n that_o be_v here_o term_a labour_n do_v not_o signify_v simple_o every_o labour_n but_o such_o a_o labour_n as_o be_v sore_o and_o have_v join_v with_o it_o toil_a of_o the_o body_n and_o moil_a of_o the_o mind_n with_o cark_n and_o care_n yea_o and_o weariness_n both_o of_o body_n and_o mind_n join_v with_o it_o as_o a_o effect_n flow_v from_o it_o and_o that_o cause_v some_o also_o to_o turn_v it_o thus_o come_v unto_o i_o all_o you_o that_o be_v weary_a whatsoever_o it_o be_v we_o may_v see_v that_o christ_n mind_v by_o this_o metaphor_n to_o express_v this_o much_o unto_o we_o that_o distress_n of_o spirit_n upon_o what_o cause_n soever_o it_o arise_v and_o conflict_n of_o conscience_n be_v no_o small_a pain_n but_o a_o great_a and_o grievous_a sorrow_n enter_v deep_a into_o the_o soul_n disquiet_v the_o spirit_n distemper_a the_o from_o the_o ear_n speech_n from_o the_o mouth_n appetite_n from_o the_o stomach_n nay_o i_o will_v say_v more_o it_o have_v cause_v some_o to_o assay_v the_o finish_n of_o their_o pain_n as_o they_o suppose_v with_o a_o shameful_a &_o fearful_a end_n have_v it_o be_v accomplish_v which_o yet_o notwithstanding_o be_v not_o speak_v here_o or_o propound_v elsewhere_o unto_o we_o in_o the_o word_n to_o discourage_v or_o oppress_v they_o that_o be_v in_o that_o combat_n but_o as_o on_o the_o one_o side_n to_o teach_v all_o man_n to_o cast_v away_o security_n and_o carelessness_n so_o on_o the_o other_o side_n to_o instruct_v they_o that_o be_v so_o weak_a in_o themselves_o to_o rely_v upon_o he_o that_o be_v the_o god_n of_o their_o strength_n who_o be_v in_o they_o and_o with_o they_o and_o for_o they_o will_v doubtless_o make_v his_o strength_n and_o power_n to_o appear_v in_o their_o weakness_n that_o other_o word_n heavy_a lade_v be_v metaphorical_a also_o and_o translate_v from_o bodily_a burden_n unto_o spiritual_a that_o be_v to_o say_v to_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n and_o iniquity_n which_o lie_v more_o hard_a upon_o the_o soul_n and_o spirit_n though_o worldly_a man_n feel_v they_o not_o than_o any_o outward_a do_v or_o can_v upon_o the_o body_n yea_o though_o a_o man_n shall_v be_v press_v therewithal_o unto_o death_n because_o that_o only_o reach_v unto_o the_o body_n and_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o pain_n thereof_o the_o soul_n little_a or_o nothing_o touch_v nay_o it_o may_v be_v very_o cheerful_a and_o comfortable_a spiritual_o and_o so_o cause_v the_o soul_n almost_o to_o find_v no_o grief_n as_o in_o the_o martyr_n that_o have_v be_v so_o many_o way_n and_o so_o grievous_o torment_v may_v and_o do_v appear_v but_o when_o the_o soul_n be_v overclogged_a with_o sin_n and_o the_o sense_n thereof_o or_o of_o god_n anger_n against_o it_o for_o the_o same_o the_o very_a body_n be_v taint_v thereby_o with_o sundry_a sort_n of_o sickness_n and_o diverse_a kind_n of_o disease_n some_o recoverable_a and_o some_o unrecoverable_a and_o we_o shall_v find_v it_o much_o use_v in_o the_o scripture_n that_o sin_n itself_o be_v compare_v unto_o a_o burden_n which_o may_v in_o part_n appear_v not_o only_o by_o this_o when_o the_o prophet_n call_v the_o judgement_n of_o god_n that_o shall_v fall_v upon_o man_n for_o their_o sin_n burden_n that_o so_o there_o may_v be_v some_o proportion_n between_o the_o iniquity_n they_o have_v commit_v &_o the_o punishment_n that_o be_v execute_v upon_o they_o for_o it_o but_o also_o by_o a_o plain_a place_n of_o the_o prophet_n david_n in_o that_o eight_o &_o thirty_o psalm_n that_o we_o sing_v before_o this_o sermon_n when_o he_o say_v my_o iniquity_n be_v go_v over_o my_o head_n and_o as_o a_o discredit_v among_o man_n special_o godly_a discord_n yea_o anarchy_n in_o kingdom_n common_a wealth_n and_o family_n and_o what_o not_o and_o indeed_o this_o be_v a_o point_n well_o worth_a the_o wade_v into_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o grossness_n and_o corruption_n of_o the_o age_n wherein_o we_o live_v make_v so_o small_a or_o no_o conscience_n at_o all_o of_o sin_n and_o transgression_n be_v it_o not_o that_o we_o be_v to_o be_v occupy_v in_o some_o other_o point_n of_o comfort_n and_o consolation_n howbeit_o this_o much_o we_o may_v say_v that_o as_o it_o argue_v small_a conscience_n of_o sin_n in_o man_n that_o mitigate_v &_o minse_v it_o so_o it_o minister_v small_a hope_n of_o comfort_n unto_o themselves_o or_o other_o of_o the_o happy_a recovery_n out_o of_o it_o for_o how_o be_v it_o likely_a that_o they_o shall_v be_v cure_v of_o a_o disease_n that_o either_o know_v it_o not_o or_o feel_v it_o not_o or_o take_v it_o not_o to_o be_v so_o deadly_a and_o dangerous_a as_o it_o be_v whereas_o on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o tender_a conscience_n charge_v yea_o surcharge_v itself_o with_o more_o than_o it_o shall_v it_o may_v be_v &_o yet_o that_o can_v hardly_o be_v keep_v or_o account_v of_o but_o to_o let_v this_o point_n pass_v and_o to_o come_v to_o that_o that_o do_v more_o nighly_a concern_v our_o purpose_n at_o this_o present_a now_o there_o follow_v the_o last_o word_n of_o this_o 28._o verse_n and_o i_o will_v refresh_v you_o and_o contain_v in_o they_o the_o second_o part_n thereof_o namely_o a_o sweet_a &_o comfortable_a promise_n for_o the_o also_o because_o it_o be_v a_o toil_n and_o a_o moil_n a_o wearisomnes_n and_o weakness_n to_o body_n and_o mind_n to_o bear_v a_o weight_n yea_o though_o it_o be_v but_o small_a continual_o reason_n &_o our_o own_o experience_n teach_v we_o the_o truth_n hereof_o in_o these_o worldly_a thing_n but_o how_o much_o more_o shall_v this_o be_v find_v true_a as_o in_o
as_o mournful_o utter_v that_o sorrowful_a voice_n wretched_a man_n that_o i_o be_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o the_o body_n of_o this_o death_n his_o other_o name_n christ_n and_o his_o &_o the_o self_n same_o time_n as_o melchisedech_n if_o you_o will_v yet_o neither_o have_v they_o all_o or_o if_o they_o have_v they_o they_o have_v they_o but_o as_o figure_n of_o he_o who_o person_n and_o place_n they_o do_v for_o a_o while_n represent_v and_o those_o grace_n also_o they_o have_v in_o measure_n whereas_o in_o he_o they_o be_v in_o all_o fullness_n that_o so_o of_o his_o fullness_n we_o may_v all_o receive_v even_o grace_n for_o grace_n that_o be_v abundance_n of_o grace_n and_o yet_o when_o he_o have_v give_v we_o all_o that_o we_o have_v he_o have_v never_o a_o whit_n the_o less_o in_o himself_o and_o this_o very_a thing_n have_v all_o the_o godly_a in_o all_o age_n feel_v in_o themselves_o and_o confess_v before_o other_o that_o so_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a they_o may_v be_v make_v partaker_n with_o they_o of_o the_o self_n same_o comfort_n abraham_n say_v christ_n in_o the_o gospel_n after_o john_n chap._n 8._o rejoice_v to_o see_v my_o day_n be_v sure_o i_o be_o no_o man_n can_v be_v right_o persuade_v that_o any_o particular_a person_n be_v more_o than_o the_o whole_a church_n and_o yet_o god_n not_o otherwise_o approove_v the_o church_n judgement_n to_o ratify_v it_o in_o heaven_n than_o they_o on_o the_o earth_n bound_v according_a to_o his_o will_n and_o why_o shall_v it_o be_v otherwise_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o particular_a person_n have_v they_o better_a privilege_n than_o the_o whole_a church_n have_v if_o it_o be_v so_o let_v they_o produce_v a_o law_n not_o of_o the_o twelve_o table_n among_o the_o roman_n but_o of_o the_o ten_o commandment_n among_o the_o people_n of_o god_n or_o else_o there_o be_v no_o credit_n to_o be_v give_v o_o my_o brethren_n it_o fare_v in_o the_o disease_n of_o the_o mind_n as_o it_o correct_v his_o judgement_n for_o sure_o that_o which_o he_o take_v to_o be_v bitter_a as_o gall_v or_o wormwood_n be_v by_o the_o lord_n himself_o and_o not_o by_o the_o voice_n of_o man_n to_o be_v proclaim_v to_o be_v sweet_a as_o honey_n or_o the_o honey_n comb_n the_o promise_n specify_v in_o the_o last_o word_n of_o this_o verse_n come_v now_o to_o be_v look_v into_o out_o of_o which_o gracious_a and_o sweet_a promise_n we_o may_v learn_v two_o thing_n one_o that_o the_o fullness_n of_o all_o spiritual_a joy_n and_o comfort_n be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o no_o where_o else_o which_o because_o it_o be_v the_o same_o that_o have_v be_v handle_v heretofore_o we_o will_v but_o only_o touch_v and_o put_v you_o in_o mind_n of_o it_o not_o stand_v upon_o it_o because_o it_o be_v do_v already_o and_o indeed_o though_o the_o point_n be_v excellent_a and_o will_v be_v handle_v again_o &_o again_o yet_o because_o the_o time_n pass_v away_o &_o we_o be_v to_o come_v to_o other_o point_n we_o will_v say_v no_o more_o only_o let_v the_o faithful_a conscience_n look_v well_o unto_o it_o and_o provide_v his_o comfort_n this_o way_n or_o else_o let_v he_o know_v he_o shall_v never_o be_v comfort_v indeed_o the_o other_o be_v this_o that_o if_o a_o man_n will_v find_v sound_a comfort_n indeed_o he_o must_v be_v well_o acquaint_v with_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o word_n this_o doctrine_n as_o other_o be_v both_o gather_v out_o of_o this_o place_n &_o confirm_v by_o it_o as_o may_v appear_v by_o this_o that_o our_o saviour_n christ_n be_v here_o so_o plentiful_a in_o the_o promise_n i_o will_v refresh_v you_o you_o shall_v find_v rest_n unto_o your_o soul_n which_o course_n also_o he_o observe_v in_o many_o other_o place_n i_o will_v have_v mercy_n and_o not_o sacrifice_v and_o again_o i_o come_v not_o to_o call_v the_o righteous_a but_o sinner_n to_o repentance_n and_o most_o sweet_a be_v that_o in_o the_o three_o chap_v of_o the_o gospel_n according_a to_o s._n john_n god_n so_o love_v the_o world_n that_o he_o have_v give_v his_o only_o beget_v son_n that_o whosoever_o believe_v in_o he_o shall_v not_o perish_v but_o have_v everlasting_a life_n neither_o be_v this_o his_o practice_n only_o but_o the_o spirit_n also_o in_o all_o the_o writing_n of_o the_o old_a and_o new_a testament_n be_v large_a this_o way_n and_o special_o in_o that_o evangelical_a prophet_n isaiah_n as_o we_o may_v see_v by_o the_o manifold_a promise_n contain_v therein_o and_o special_o in_o three_o or_o four_o chapter_n together_o as_o 53.54.55_o etc._n etc._n but_o among_o the_o rest_n how_o comfortable_a be_v that_o of_o chap_a 41._o from_o whence_o even_o unto_o the_o end_n of_o his_o prophecy_n almost_o he_o do_v nothing_o else_o but_o publish_v promise_n and_o confolation_n among_o which_o howsoever_o he_o do_v sometime_o intermingle_v terror_n and_o threaten_a yet_o he_o do_v it_o to_o no_o other_o onde_n but_o to_o make_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n more_o
where_o else_o either_o to_o be_v seek_v or_o find_v but_o in_o lesus_fw-la christ_n only_o where_o i_o beseech_v you_o first_o to_o mark_v both_o how_o this_o doctrine_n arise_v from_o hence_o and_o spirit_n for_o the_o affliction_n of_o the_o mind_n be_v inward_a and_o these_o be_v but_o outward_a &_o therefore_o be_v not_o fit_v for_o a_o person_n or_o party_n so_o affect_v and_o i_o will_v as_o soon_o think_v and_o say_v that_o bodily_a food_n be_v the_o proper_a and_o sound_a nourishment_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o suppose_v that_o these_o outward_a thing_n be_v the_o true_a and_o sound_a comfort_n of_o a_o break_a and_o contrite_a heart_n but_o that_o yet_o we_o may_v be_v the_o better_o persuade_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o point_n let_v we_o proceed_v unto_o some_o further_a proof_n of_o it_o this_o be_v not_o in_o my_o mind_n obscure_o signify_v under_o all_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o the_o old_a law_n whether_o they_o be_v ordinary_a or_o extraordinary_a daily_a or_o yearly_o general_a or_o particular_a all_o and_o every_o one_o of_o they_o in_o measure_n more_o or_o less_o tend_v still_o unto_o he_o who_o they_o do_v prefigure_v and_o signify_v as_o the_o apostle_n at_o large_a declare_v in_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o hebrew_n and_o why_o he_o because_o he_o be_v he_o alone_o in_o who_o god_n be_v please_v to_o reconcile_v the_o world_n unto_o himself_o and_o to_o make_v the_o one_o and_o only_a object_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o this_o be_v plain_o propound_v unto_o we_o and_o prove_v also_o by_o manifold_a text_n of_o scripture_n both_o know_v and_o confess_v a_o evident_a prophecy_n concern_v christ_n and_o the_o grace_n that_o we_o shall_v find_v in_o he_o if_o with_o a_o lively_a and_o steadfast_a faith_n we_o labour_v to_o lay_v hold_n of_o he_o it_o be_v say_v incline_v your_o ear_n and_o come_v unto_o i_o oh_o mark_n how_o like_o this_o euangelical_n prophet_n &_o our_o saviour_n himself_o speak_v &_o let_v this_o phrase_n also_o i_o beseech_v you_o serve_v for_o a_o confirmation_n and_o exposition_n of_o these_o word_n of_o our_o text_n hear_v and_o your_o soul_n shall_v live_v and_o i_o will_v make_v a_o everlasting_a covenant_n with_o you_o even_o the_o sure_a mercy_n of_o david_n every_o word_n have_v his_o weight_n he_o yea_o he_o alone_o will_v establish_v not_o a_o momentany_a but_o a_o everlasting_a covenant_n with_o all_o his_o faithful_a of_o which_o that_o we_o may_v be_v the_o better_o certify_v he_o tell_v we_o it_o shall_v be_v sure_a yea_o as_o sure_a as_o the_o mercy_n manifest_v unto_o and_o bestow_v upon_o david_n which_o as_o they_o be_v large_a and_o almost_o innumerable_a so_o be_v they_o irrevocable_a and_o can_v never_o fail_v to_o the_o same_o purpose_n serve_v a_o notable_a sentence_n of_o the_o apostle_n 2._o cor._n 1.5_o as_o the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n abound_v in_o we_o so_o our_o consolation_n abound_v through_o christ._n by_o suffering_n of_o christ_n he_o mean_v not_o only_o those_o thing_n that_o we_o endure_v at_o the_o hand_n of_o persecuter_n for_o christ_n sake_n for_o christ_n do_v not_o only_o suffer_v that_o way_n but_o even_o those_o anguish_v also_o that_o we_o have_v in_o our_o soul_n and_o in_o our_o spirit_n christ_n be_v as_o much_o yea_o far_o more_o throw_v down_o and_o humble_v that_o way_n than_o all_o flesh_n as_o appear_v by_o his_o conflict_n in_o the_o garden_n and_o by_o his_o outcry_n upon_o the_o cross_n say_v my_o god_n my_o god_n why_o have_v thou_o forsake_v i_o and_o though_o these_o have_v be_v be_v and_o be_v very_o good_a indeed_o as_o those_o that_o have_v feel_v and_o do_v feel_v they_o know_v and_o confess_v yet_o to_o the_o end_n that_o we_o may_v assure_v ourselves_o that_o our_o joy_n shall_v match_v they_o he_o say_v our_o consolation_n abound_v through_o he_o for_o if_o there_o be_v not_o a_o proportion_n betwixt_o our_o heaviness_n and_o our_o comfort_n nay_o i_o will_v say_v more_o a_o superaboundance_n of_o our_o joy_n above_o our_o grief_n then_o sure_a what_o by_o reason_n of_o satan_n malice_n against_o we_o and_o the_o dulness_n and_o hardness_n of_o our_o own_o heart_n to_o believe_v and_o the_o greatness_n of_o our_o grief_n &_o sorrow_n beside_o it_o will_v go_v hard_a with_o a_o distress_a spirit_n and_o therefore_o as_o for_o the_o comfort_v of_o we_o against_o the_o hugeness_n and_o height_n of_o our_o sin_n we_o say_v with_o the_o apostle_n where_o sin_n have_v abound_v there_o grace_n have_v overabounded_a so_o in_o this_o case_n of_o inward_a affliction_n particular_o we_o say_v our_o sorrow_n may_v be_v sore_a and_o our_o grief_n great_a yet_o our_o light_a affliction_n which_o be_v but_o for_o a_o moment_n cause_v unto_o we_o a_o far_o most_o excellent_a and_o eternal_a weight_n as_o of_o glory_n in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v so_o of_o joy_n in_o this_o life_n raise_v up_o in_o our_o heart_n by_o the_o comfortable_a feel_n thereof_o and_o he_o that_o know_v sound_o and_o feel_o believe_v the_o name_n nature_n person_n and_o office_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n together_o with_o the_o effect_n that_o from_o he_o in_o they_o be_v communicate_v to_o we_o can_v choose_v but_o see_v feel_v and_o confess_v the_o truth_n of_o this_o point_n he_o be_v good_a &_o in_o he_o there_o be_v not_o or_o can_v be_v any_o thing_n but_o that_o which_o be_v absolute_o good_a as_o in_o who_o face_n and_o presence_n also_o there_o be_v the_o fullness_n of_o joy_n for_o evermore_o and_o at_o his_o right_a hand_n pleasure_n for_o ever_o and_o ever_o he_o be_v likewise_o so_o good_a that_o yet_o notwithstanding_o he_o be_v man_n like_o unto_o we_o in_o every_o respect_n sin_n only_o except_v and_o one_o that_o have_v be_v touch_v with_o the_o feel_n of_o our_o infirmity_n by_o mean_n whereof_o we_o may_v the_o more_o bold_o come_v unto_o the_o throne_n of_o grace_n &_o so_o receive_v mercy_n and_o find_v grace_n to_o help_v in_o time_n of_o need_n yea_o these_o two_o nature_n be_v so_o join_v &_o knit_v as_o we_o may_v say_v inseparable_o in_o one_o person_n even_o from_o the_o very_a time_n of_o his_o bless_a conception_n in_o the_o womb_n of_o his_o mother_n for_o the_o accomplishment_n of_o the_o work_n of_o our_o redemption_n and_o our_o full_a comfort_n thereby_o as_o that_o they_o can_v be_v divide_v or_o sunder_v he_o be_v man_n that_o so_o he_o may_v suffer_v and_o god_n that_o so_o he_o may_v overcome_v the_o perfection_n and_o full_a accomplishment_n of_o our_o redemption_n stand_v upon_o these_o two_o part_n suffer_v for_o sin_n this_o be_v the_o first_o and_o then_o overcome_v sin_n and_o death_n &_o he_o that_o have_v the_o power_n of_o death_n that_o be_v the_o devil_n and_o why_o be_v he_o call_v jesus_n but_o because_o as_o it_o be_v say_v matth._n 1._o he_o shall_v save_v his_o people_n from_o their_o sin_n for_o sin_n and_o that_o that_o ensue_v upon_o sin_n as_o shame_n and_o confusion_n of_o face_n horror_n of_o heart_n condemnation_n etc._n etc._n be_v it_o that_o most_o sting_v man_n mind_n and_o soul_n now_o all_o these_o be_v take_v away_o in_o christ_n why_o shall_v they_o not_o as_o well_o and_o comfortable_o sing_v that_o triumphant_a song_n o_o death_n where_o be_v thy_o sting_n o_o grave_n or_o hell_n where_o be_v thy_o victory_n the_o sting_n of_o death_n be_v sin_n and_o the_o strength_n of_o sin_n be_v the_o law_n but_o thanks_n be_v unto_o god_n which_o have_v give_v we_o victory_n through_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n as_o well_o
