torture_v but_o such_o a_o fickle_a and_o perishable_a life_n which_o the_o next_o minute_n may_v be_v do_v and_o let_v he_o drop_v away_o to_o hell_n for_o ever_o oh_o how_o sudden_o may_v such_o perish_v and_o come_v to_o a_o fearful_a end_n but_o if_o we_o live_v the_o life_n of_o christ_n that_o be_v a_o last_a and_o abide_v life_n and_o though_o the_o natural_a life_n decay_n and_o though_o the_o body_n die_v and_o rot_v and_o turn_v to_o dust_n and_o putrefaction_n yet_o this_o will_v flourish_v and_o grow_v strong_a still_o till_o it_o be_v perfect_v and_o make_v consummate_v in_o the_o life_n of_o glory_n and_o why_o then_o be_v our_o labour_n and_o endeavour_n whole_o spend_v to_o nourish_v and_o maintain_v this_o transitory_a life_n with_o thing_n that_o perish_v in_o the_o use_n which_o yet_o when_o all_o be_v do_v will_v fail_v and_o come_v to_o dissolution_n but_o never_o strive_v for_o the_o attainment_n of_o that_o life_n which_o be_v eternal_a it_o be_v a_o lamentable_a thing_n my_o brethren_n that_o the_o divine_a intention_n of_o eternal_a mind_n shall_v be_v lay_v out_o on_o nothing_o else_o but_o perishable_a thing_n now_o that_o you_o may_v attain_v promise_v to_o give_v they_o wisdom_n and_o a_o mouth_n that_o be_v matter_n and_o expression_n luke_n 21.15_o wisdom_n within_o together_o with_o a_o mouth_n to_o utter_v and_o to_o bring_v forth_o that_o wisdom_n to_o show_v that_o both_o of_o these_o must_v go_v together_o in_o a_o preacher_n of_o the_o gospel_n i_o know_v there_o be_v a_o latitude_n to_o be_v admit_v and_o allow_v in_o this_o regard_n but_o yet_o a_o competent_a ability_n to_o speak_v so_o as_o the_o people_n may_v be_v edify_v by_o it_o be_v indisputable_o require_v and_o if_o the_o under-minister_n of_o christ_n must_v have_v such_o a_o faculty_n how_o great_a ability_n then_o must_v their_o master_n have_v who_o be_v design_v to_o be_v the_o great_a preacher_n the_o great_a prophet_n and_o as_o the_o apostle_n style_v he_o the_o chief_a bishop_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o if_o he_o have_v such_o a_o transcendent_a faculty_n to_o speak_v then_o certain_o the_o word_n he_o speak_v be_v fit_a to_o be_v commend_v etc._n etc._n then_o second_o if_o you_o consider_v as_o who_o the_o word_n be_v so_o in_o the_o next_o place_n what_o the_o word_n be_v you_o will_v allow_v they_o to_o be_v worthy_a of_o our_o choice_a observation_n what_o the_o word_n be_v that_o jesus_n speak_v either_o for_o the_o matter_n of_o they_o or_o for_o the_o efficacy_n of_o they_o let_v we_o a_o little_a weigh_v they_o in_o far_o from_o be_v quicken_v to_o this_o life_n of_o grace_n that_o they_o be_v mere_a stranger_n to_o it_o they_o know_v not_o what_o this_o kind_n of_o life_n mean_n and_o be_v there_o not_o a_o multitude_n of_o such_o among_o we_o who_o be_v almost_o as_o ignorant_a of_o god_n and_o christ_n as_o the_o very_a beast_n that_o perish_v who_o beside_o some_o common_a name_n and_o notion_n of_o god_n and_o of_o a_o jesus_n and_o saviour_n and_o the_o like_a which_o it_o may_v be_v they_o can_v talk_v a_o little_a of_o because_o they_o hear_v they_o every_o day_n know_v nothing_o of_o the_o one_o or_o of_o the_o other_o examine_v they_o and_o sift_v they_o well_o and_o you_o shall_v find_v that_o rhey_n have_v nothing_o but_o a_o form_n of_o word_n at_o utmost_a of_o which_o they_o can_v hour_n of_o be_v cast_v into_o the_o lake_n that_o burn_v with_o fire_n and_o brimstone_n which_o be_v the_o second_o death_n it_o may_v be_v you_o will_v take_v no_o notice_n of_o it_o but_o chase_v into_o the_o world_n to_o be_v a_o mediator_n and_o a_o peacemaker_n to_o make_v up_o all_o the_o breach_n and_o the_o difference_n between_o thou_o and_o thy_o people_n they_o will_v look_v strange_o upon_o i_o and_o i_o shall_v never_o bring_v they_o to_o believe_v that_o i_o be_o come_v on_o such_o a_o errand_n as_o this_o be_v and_o therefore_o i_o beseech_v thou_o father_n that_o i_o may_v be_v entertain_v under_o the_o notion_n of_o a_o mediator_n that_o the_o world_n may_v believe_v that_o thou_o have_v send_v i_o on_o this_o business_n do_v thou_o take_v care_n that_o my_o disciple_n disciple_n to_o be_v at_o near_a unity_n among_o themselves_o then_o let_v this_o quicken_v we_o and_o stir_v we_o up_o who_o will_v be_v take_v to_o be_v christ_n disciple_n to_o labour_v after_o of_o division_n to_o possess_v his_o own_o people_n and_o when_o the_o member_n of_o the_o body_n mystical_a of_o christ_n be_v of_o so_o many_o mind_n and_o draw_v so_o many_o way_n and_o have_v sometime_o such_o vehement_a and_o hot_a contention_n and_o dispute_n among_o themselves_o so_o that_o the_o church_n have_v never_o great_a reason_n to_o cry_v out_o as_o rebecca_n sometime_o do_v when_o she_o have_v party_n in_o her_o womb_n if_o it_o be_v so_o why_o be_o i_o thus_o and_o therefore_o we_o have_v need_v to_o put_v some_o spirit_n into_o this_o persuasion_n and_o you_o have_v need_v to_o put_v some_o spirit_n into_o your_o endeavour_n and_o if_o the_o lord_n will_v put_v his_o spirit_n of_o unity_n and_o peace_n into_o we_o it_o may_v subdue_v and_o overcome_v the_o spirit_n of_o division_n which_o reign_v too_o much_o abroad_o in_o these_o time_n but_o you_o will_v ask_v i_o how_o may_v we_o attain_v this_o and_o what_o be_v we_o to_o do_v that_o we_o may_v come_v to_o be_v at_o near_a unity_n among_o ourselves_o though_o it_o be_v very_o difficult_a as_o you_o have_v hear_v it_o may_v be_v compass_v notwithstanding_o by_o the_o blessing_n of_o the_o lord_n upon_o the_o use_n of_o these_o direction_n you_o must_v endeavour_v to_o the_o utmost_a of_o your_o power_n to_o mortify_v those_o lust_n and_o those_o corruption_n that_o incline_v you_o to_o dissension_n i_o show_v you_o former_o in_o explication_n of_o the_o point_n that_o the_o cause_n of_o our_o division_n be_v within_o and_o not_o without_o we_o they_o do_v not_o come_v so_o much_o mercy_n and_o when_o they_o be_v once_o destroy_v our_o difference_n and_o debate_n will_v end_v with_o they_o as_o we_o must_v mortify_v our_o carnal_a lust_n so_o we_o must_v chase_v away_o out_o of_o our_o heart_n our_o carnal_a reason_n that_o foment_n
present_n nor_o our_o future_a happiness_n 1._o our_o present_a happiness_n consist_v in_o the_o title_n that_o we_o have_v to_o christ_n the_o interest_n we_o have_v in_o he_o and_o the_o communion_n we_o have_v with_o he_o can_v the_o hatred_n of_o the_o world_n put_v a_o end_n to_o this_o communion_n no_o say_v the_o apostle_n paul_n rom._n 3.35_o who_o shall_v separate_v we_o from_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n shall_v tribulation_n or_o distress_n or_o persecution_n or_o famine_n or_o nakedness_n or_o peril_n or_o sword_n as_o it_o be_v write_v for_o thy_o sake_n be_v we_o kill_v all_o the_o day_n long_o nay_o in_o all_o these_o thing_n we_o be_v more_o than_o conqueror_n through_o he_o that_o love_v as_o for_o i_o be_o very_o persuade_v that_o neither_o death_n nor_o life_n nor_o it_o be_v not_o all_o their_o hatred_n can_v keep_v a_o christian_a from_o the_o love_n and_o fellowship_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o so_o by_o consequence_n it_o can_v keep_v he_o from_o his_o present_a happiness_n 2._o and_o for_o our_o happiness_n to_o come_v it_o can_v hinder_v that_o neither_o it_o do_v not_o lie_v so_o loose_a my_o brethren_n that_o all_o the_o world_n can_v take_v it_o from_o we_o no_o it_o be_v in_o god_n keep_v he_o open_v and_o no_o man_n shut_v he_o shut_v and_o no_o man_n open_v he_o open_v heaven_n upon_o stephen_n when_o the_o world_n be_v show_v the_o utmost_a of_o its_o rage_n against_o he_o and_o very_o a_o christian_n be_v as_o near_o the_o compliment_n and_o the_o perfection_n of_o his_o happiness_n when_o he_o suffer_v all_o the_o wrong_n and_o ignominy_n and_o contempt_n that_o the_o world_n can_v pour_v upon_o he_o and_o sometime_o near_o than_o he_o be_v at_o other_o time_n for_o that_o may_v be_v the_o way_n to_o it_o and_o hence_o say_v christ_n in_o the_o fore-alledged_n text_n mat._n 5.11_o bless_a be_v you_o when_o man_n revile_v you_o rejoice_v and_o be_v exceed_o glad_a and_o why_o so_o for_o great_a be_v your_o reward_n in_o heaven_n john_n 17.15_o i_o pray_v not_o that_o thou_o shall_v take_v they_o out_o of_o the_o world_n etc._n etc._n and_o thus_o far_o of_o the_o second_o argument_n with_o which_o our_o saviour_n press_v and_o enforce_v his_o petition_n to_o his_o father_n in_o behalf_n of_o his_o apostle_n and_o disciple_n that_o he_o will_v keep_v they_o through_o his_o own_o name_n viz._n because_o our_o saviour_n for_o his_o own_o part_n be_v even_o ready_a to_o depart_v from_o they_o and_o to_o abandon_v they_o in_o such_o a_o place_n where_o they_o be_v hate_v universal_o almost_o the_o world_n have_v hate_v they_o say_v christ_n why_o then_o a_o man_n will_v think_v the_o only_a way_n be_v to_o remove_v they_o out_o of_o such_o a_o place_n where_o they_o be_v so_o ill_o belove_v and_o so_o malign_v upon_o all_o hand_n if_o the_o world_n hate_v they_o because_o they_o be_v not_o of_o the_o world_n what_o shall_v they_o do_v there_o any_o long_o the_o best_a way_n be_v to_o take_v they_o thence_o and_o to_o translate_v they_o to_o a_o place_n where_o they_o be_v likely_a to_o have_v more_o quiet_a no_o say_v our_o saviour_n i_o disow_v that_o that_o be_v not_o the_o intent_n and_o drift_n of_o my_o petition_n i_o pray_v not_o that_o thou_o shall_v take_v they_o out_o of_o the_o world_n etc._n etc._n so_o that_o these_o word_n my_o brethren_n be_v a_o explication_n of_o that_o which_o be_v deliver_v in_o the_o former_a verse_n that_o it_o may_v not_o be_v mistake_v not_o that_o our_o saviour_n be_v afraid_a his_o father_n will_v mistake_v his_o meaning_n but_o he_o know_v they_o may_v mistake_v he_o who_o hear_v he_o speak_v to_o his_o father_n and_o therefore_o as_o a_o learned_a writer_n note_n upon_o the_o text_n he_o speak_v unto_o his_o father_n as_o a_o man_n for_o man_n sake_n because_o he_o speak_v in_o their_o hear_n he_o tell_v they_o plain_o and_o express_o what_o he_o do_v not_o pray_v for_o i_o pray_v not_o that_o thou_o shall_v take_v they_o out_o of_o the_o world_n and_o then_o he_o tell_v he_o clear_o what_o he_o do_v pray_v for_o but_o that_o thou_o shall_v keep_v they_o from_o the_o evil_n begin_v we_o with_o the_o first_o part_n of_o the_o explication_n in_o which_o our_o saviour_n tell_v his_o father_n plain_o and_o express_o what_o he_o do_v not_o pray_v for_o i_o do_v not_o pray_v that_o thou_o shall_v take_v they_o out_o of_o the_o world_n so_o that_o the_o point_n to_o be_v observe_v hence_o be_v this_o doctrine_n removal_n out_o of_o this_o world_n be_v not_o the_o proper_a subject_a matter_n of_o petition_n you_o see_v our_o saviour_n christ_n disow_v it_o clear_o in_o my_o text_n he_o will_v by_o no_o mean_n have_v it_o think_v that_o he_o desire_v his_o father_n to_o remove_v his_o disciple_n hence_o by_o death_n to_o take_v they_o out_o of_o the_o world_n no_o say_v our_o saviour_n that_o be_v not_o the_o thing_n i_o pray_v for_o i_o pray_v not_o that_o thou_o shall_v take_v they_o out_o of_o the_o world_n and_o even_o as_o he_o disow_v it_o in_o his_o prayer_n so_o shall_v we_o for_o we_o must_v walk_v in_o every_o imitable_a thing_n as_o we_o have_v he_o for_o a_o example_n and_o out_o of_o doubt_n he_o speak_v not_o this_o for_o the_o direction_n of_o his_o father_n that_o he_o may_v not_o be_v mistake_v as_o i_o note_v even_o now_o but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n for_o the_o instruction_n of_o his_o apostle_n and_o disciple_n who_o be_v by_o and_o hear_v he_o pray_v that_o they_o may_v learn_v not_o to_o exceed_v their_o bound_n in_o their_o petition_n and_o when_o they_o serious_o consider_v how_o they_o be_v hate_v and_o malign_v and_o abuse_v in_o the_o world_n they_o may_v not_o yet_o desire_v the_o lord_n on_o this_o account_n that_o he_o will_v take_v they_o hence_o but_o rather_o that_o he_o will_v preserve_v and_o keep_v they_o here_o as_o you_o have_v it_o in_o my_o text_n i_o pray_v not_o that_o thou_o shall_v take_v they_o out_o of_o the_o world_n but_o that_o thou_o shall_v keep_v they_o from_o the_o evil_n and_o the_o ground_n be_v evident_a reason_n removal_n out_o of_o this_o world_n be_v not_o the_o proper_a subject_a matter_n of_o petition_n because_o it_o be_v not_o simple_o in_o itself_o a_o blessing_n indeed_o by_o accident_n i_o must_v acknowledge_v death_n and_o departure_n hence_o be_v turn_v exceed_v ng_o to_o the_o advantage_n of_o the_o saint_n for_o by_o it_o they_o be_v free_v from_o evil_n penal_a and_o from_o evil_n sinful_a from_o suffer_v and_o from_o sin_v they_o be_v admit_v to_o most_o near_a communion_n with_o he_o who_o their_o soul_n love_v and_o who_o their_o heart_n do_v even_o gasp_v after_o from_o who_o immediate_a presence_n they_o be_v unavoidable_o debar_v as_o long_o as_o they_o remain_v in_o this_o world_n but_o proper_o life_n and_o continuance_n in_o the_o body_n be_v the_o blessing_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v proper_o to_o be_v desire_v we_o find_v it_o usual_o to_o be_v propound_v in_o the_o promise_n as_o the_o reward_n of_o holiness_n and_o of_o obedience_n and_o in_o this_o form_n we_o have_v it_o in_o the_o five_o commandment_n which_o be_v the_o first_o commandment_n with_o promise_n the_o only_a one_o that_o have_v a_o promise_n of_o the_o second_o table_n the_o only_a one_o of_o all_o the_o ten_o that_o have_v a_o distinct_a and_o particular_a promise_n and_o now_o you_o will_v expect_v i_o know_v there_o shall_v be_v some_o transcendent_a mercy_n comprehend_v in_o such_o a_o singular_a and_o extraordinary_a promise_n as_o this_o be_v and_o yet_o it_o be_v but_o long_a life_n in_o this_o world_n that_o thy_o day_n may_v be_v long_o in_o the_o land_n etc._n etc._n that_o promise_n be_v a_o pregnant_a one_o to_o this_o effect_n psal_n 91._o ult_n with_o long_a life_n will_v i_o satisfy_v he_o and_o show_v he_o my_o salvation_n first_o i_o will_v satisfy_v he_o with_o long_a life_n he_o
in_o paradise_n no_o we_o be_v branch_n of_o such_o a_o vine_n as_o never_o wither_v &_o we_o be_v member_n of_o such_o a_o head_n as_o never_o die_v so_o that_o undoubted_o the_o life_n of_o jesus_n in_o we_o although_o it_o be_v not_o privilege_v from_o abatement_n and_o temptation_n yet_o it_o have_v nothing_o in_o it_o that_o tend_v to_o utter_v dissolution_n second_o the_o life_n which_o evidence_n of_o life_n and_o then_o again_o in_o show_n and_o in_o appearance_n when_o they_o lose_v that_o life_n of_o grace_n which_o both_o to_o other_o and_o themselves_o they_o seem_v to_o enjoy_v now_o be_v it_o so_o that_o the_o life_n which_o jesus_n christ_n etc._n etc._n this_o than_o shall_v stay_v use_v 1_o we_o and_o support_v we_o against_o the_o fear_n of_o those_o tentation_n which_o threaten_v we_o with_o the_o destruction_n of_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n it_o be_v a_o great_a affliction_n to_o the_o saint_n sometime_o when_o they_o be_v mighty_o assault_v by_o satan_n and_o their_o own_o corruption_n and_o even_o ready_a to_o be_v overcome_v they_o cry_v out_o with_o relation_n to_o their_o spiritual_a as_o job_n with_o respect_n to_o his_o natural_a life_n what_o be_v my_o strength_n that_o i_o shall_v hope_v what_o grace_n have_v i_o that_o i_o shall_v hold_v out_o against_o such_o violent_a encounter_n as_o these_o be_v how_o shall_v i_o hope_v to_o live_v when_o my_o life_n be_v thus_o assault_v with_o such_o fiery_a dart_n without_o with_o such_o distemper_n noxious_a humour_n and_o such_o lust_n within_o oh_o but_o remember_v my_o belove_a christ_n give_v eternal_a life_n to_o his_o people_n a_o life_n that_o be_v not_o subject_a to_o destruction_n either_o by_o inward_a weakness_n or_o outward_a violence_n if_o ever_o once_o you_o have_v it_o from_o he_o you_o can_v never_o lose_v it_o he_o that_o once_o live_v the_o life_n of_o christ_n can_v never_o die_v death_n have_v no_o more_o dominion_n over_o he_o be_v it_o so_o my_o brethren_n that_o the_o life_n of_o etc._n etc._n this_o than_o may_v clear_v and_o use_v 2_o comfort_v we_o against_o the_o frailty_n and_o dissolution_n of_o the_o life_n of_o nature_n it_o be_v true_a my_o brethren_n that_o be_v subject_a to_o decay_v it_o be_v a_o perishable_a life_n but_o this_o be_v a_o eternal_a life_n that_o may_v and_o will_v be_v lose_v indeed_o but_o this_o endure_v to_o all_o eternity_n and_o why_o then_o be_v we_o so_o afraid_a of_o death_n why_o do_v it_o terrify_v we_o and_o affright_v we_o so_o when_o it_o have_v do_v its_o utmost_a we_o shall_v live_v for_o ever_o why_o be_v we_o grieve_v and_o trouble_v when_o they_o die_v the_o death_n of_o nature_n who_o have_v the_o life_n of_o christ_n in_o they_o true_o my_o brethren_n we_o may_v say_v of_o such_o as_o our_o saviour_n of_o the_o damsel_n they_o be_v not_o dead_a as_o christ_n to_o martha_n when_o she_o bewail_v the_o loss_n of_o her_o dear_a brother_n lazarus_n john_n 11.26_o whosoever_o live_v and_o believe_v in_o i_o shall_v never_o die_v he_o shall_v never_o die_v the_o death_n that_o overthrow_v the_o life_n of_o christ_n the_o life_n of_o grace_n for_o so_o you_o must_v conceive_v he_o there_o in_o that_o place_n q._n d._n lazarus_n be_v a_o believer_n and_o therefore_o whatsoever_o thou_o may_v apprehend_v he_o be_v not_o dead_a he_o be_v not_o dead_a in_o reference_n to_o that_o which_o be_v a_o christian_n life_n indeed_o no_o true_a believer_n be_v capable_a of_o die_v so_o whosoever_o live_v and_o believe_v in_o i_o can_v never_o die_v it_o be_v true_a my_o brethren_n such_o may_v lose_v the_o life_n of_o nature_n but_o that_o alas_o be_v but_o a_o image_n and_o a_o shadow_n and_o a_o show_n of_o life_n the_o life_n of_o grace_n and_o holiness_n be_v life_n indeed_o he_o that_o live_v in_o sin_n be_v dead_a while_o he_o live_v he_o that_o live_v in_o holiness_n be_v alive_a when_o he_o die_v and_o if_o the_o life_n of_o nature_n be_v not_o worth_a the_o name_n of_o life_n then_o certain_o the_o death_n that_o overthrow_v no_o other_o but_o the_o life_n of_o nature_n deserve_v not_o the_o name_n of_o death_n and_o hence_o the_o death_n of_o
