that_o they_o shall_v cease_v to_o be_v but_o we_o may_v so_o lose_v they_o in_o another_o that_o we_o shall_v wish_v to_o lose_v they_o even_o in_o that_o that_o be_v we_o may_v lose_v that_o happy_a estate_n to_o which_o they_o be_v create_v and_o plunge_v they_o into_o the_o extreme_a misery_n in_o a_o word_n we_o may_v lose_v they_o in_o hell_n whence_o there_o be_v no_o fetch_v they_o back_o and_o so_o they_o be_v lose_v for_o ever_o nay_o in_o this_o consideration_n our_o very_a body_n be_v concern_v those_o darling_n of_o we_o for_o which_o all_o our_o care_n be_v lay_v out_o for_o they_o must_v certain_o after_o death_n be_v raise_v again_o and_o be_v join_v again_o to_o the_o soul_n and_o take_v part_n with_o it_o in_o whatever_o state_n if_o then_o our_o care_n for_o the_o body_n take_v up_o all_o our_o time_n and_o thought_n and_o leave_v we_o none_o to_o bestow_v on_o the_o poor_a soul_n it_o be_v sure_a the_o soul_n will_v for_o want_n of_o that_o care_n be_v make_v for_o ever_o miserable_a but_o it_o be_v as_o sure_a that_o that_o very_a body_n must_v be_v so_o too_o and_o therefore_o if_o you_o have_v any_o true_a kindness_n to_o your_o body_n show_v it_o by_o faith_n the_o promise_n of_o hope_n of_o love_n etc._n etc._n the_o benefit_n purchase_v for_o we_o by_o christ_n be_v such_o as_o will_v undoubted_o make_v the_o soul_n happy_a for_o eternal_a happiness_n itself_o be_v one_o of_o they_o but_o because_o these_o benefit_n belong_v not_o to_o we_o till_o we_o perform_v the_o condition_n require_v of_o we_o whoever_o desire_v the_o happiness_n of_o his_o soul_n must_v set_v himself_o to_o the_o perform_n of_o that_o condition_n what_o that_o be_v i_o have_v already_o mention_v in_o general_n that_o it_o be_v the_o hearty_a honest_a endeavour_n of_o obey_v the_o whole_a will_n of_o god_n but_o then_o that_o will_n of_o god_n contain_v under_o it_o many_o particular_n it_o be_v necessary_a we_o shall_v also_o know_v what_o those_o be_v that_o be_v what_o be_v the_o several_a thing_n that_o god_n now_o require_v of_o we_o our_o performance_n whereof_o will_v bring_v we_o to_o everlasting_a happiness_n and_o the_o neglect_n to_o the_o like_a and_o as_o s._n paul_n say_v rome_n 2._o 15._o their_o conscience_n do_v in_o those_o tbing_n accuse_v or_o excuse_v they_o that_o be_v tell_v they_o whether_o they_o have_v do_v what_o they_o shall_v in_o those_o particular_n or_o no._n 3._o now_o though_o christ_n have_v bring_v great_a light_n into_o the_o world_n yet_o he_o never_o mean_v by_o it_o to_o put_v out_o any_o of_o that_o natural_a light_n which_o god_n have_v set_v up_o in_o our_o soul_n therefore_o lâ—t_v i_o here_o by_o the_o way_n advise_v you_o not_o to_o walk_v contrary_a even_o to_o this_o lesser_a light_n i_o mean_v not_o to_o venture_v on_o any_o of_o those_o act_n which_o mere_a natural_a conscience_n will_v tell_v you_o be_v sin_n 4._o
eat_v no_o more_o than_o will_v just_o keep_v we_o from_o starve_v but_o we_o may_v also_o eat_v whatsoever_o either_o for_o kind_n or_o quantity_n most_o tend_v to_o the_o health_n and_o welfare_n of_o they_o now_o that_o eat_v which_o be_v agreeable_a to_o these_o end_n be_v within_o the_o bound_n of_o temperance_n as_o on_o the_o contrary_n whatsoever_o be_v contrary_a to_o they_o be_v a_o transgression_n against_o it_o he_o therefore_o that_o set_v up_o to_o himself_o other_o end_n of_o eat_v as_o either_o the_o please_a of_o his_o taste_n or_o what_o be_v yet_o worse_o the_o pamper_n of_o his_o body_n that_o he_o may_v the_o better_o serve_v his_o lust_n he_o direct_o thwart_v and_o cross_v these_o end_n of_o god_n for_o he_o that_o have_v those_o aim_n do_v that_o which_o be_v very_o contrary_a to_o health_n yea_o and_o to_o life_n itself_o as_o appear_v by_o the_o many_o disease_n and_o untimely_a death_n which_o surfeit_v and_o uncleanness_n daily_o bring_v on_o man_n 28._o he_o therefore_o that_o will_v practise_v this_o virtue_n of_o temperance_n eat_v must_v neither_o eat_v so_o much_o nor_o of_o any_o such_o sort_n of_o meat_n provide_v â—he_n can_v have_v other_o as_o may_v be_v hurtful_a to_o his_o health_n what_o the_o sort_n or_o quantity_n shall_v be_v be_v impossible_a to_o set_v down_o for_o that_o differ_v according_a to_o the_o several_a constitution_n of_o man_n some_o man_n may_v with_o temperance_n eat_v a_o great_a deal_n because_o their_o stomach_n require_v it_o when_o another_o may_v be_v guilty_a of_o intemperance_n in_o eat_v but_o half_o so_o much_o because_o it_o be_v more_o than_o be_v useful_a to_o he_o and_o so_o also_o for_o the_o sort_n of_o meat_n it_o may_v be_v niceness_n and_o luxury_n for_o some_o to_o be_v curious_a in_o they_o when_o yet_o some_o degree_n of_o it_o may_v be_v necessary_a to_o the_o infirmity_n of_o a_o weak_a stomach_n which_o not_o out_o of_o wantonness_n but_o disease_n can_v eat_v the_o courser_n meat_n but_o i_o think_v it_o may_v in_o general_n be_v say_v that_o to_o healthful_a body_n the_o plain_a meat_n be_v general_o the_o most_o wholesome_a but_o every_o man_n must_v in_o this_o be_v leave_v to_o judge_n for_o himself_o and_o that_o he_o may_v do_v it_o aright_o he_o must_v be_v careful_a that_o he_o never_o suffer_v himself_o to_o be_v enslave_v to_o his_o palate_n for_o that_o will_v be_v sure_a tâ—_n satisfy_v its_o self_n whatever_o become_v of_o health_n or_o life_n 29._o to_o secure_v he_o the_o better_a it_o let_v he_o consider_v first_o how_o unreasonable_a a_o thing_n it_o be_v that_o the_o whole_a body_n shall_v be_v subject_v to_o this_o one_o sense_n of_o taste_v that_o it_o must_v run_v all_o hazard_n only_o to_o please_v that_o but_o it_o be_v yet_o much_o more_o so_o that_o the_o divine_a part_n the_o soul_n shall_v also_o be_v thus_o enslave_v and_o yet_o thus_o it_o be_v in_o a_o intemperate_a person_n his_o very_a soul_n must_v be_v sacrifice_v to_o this_o brutish_a appetite_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o intemperance_n though_o it_o be_v act_v by_o the_o body_n yet_o the_o soul_n must_v share_v in_o the_o eternal_a punishment_n of_o it_o second_o consider_v how_o extreme_a short_a and_o vanish_v this_o pleasure_n be_v it_o be_v go_v in_o a_o moment_n but_o the_o pain_n that_o attend_v the_o excess_n of_o it_o as_o we_o and_o to_o they_o we_o may_v well_o be_v content_a to_o leave_v they_o it_o be_v the_o high_a their_o nature_n can_v reach_v to_o but_o for_o we_o who_o have_v so_o much_o more_o excellent_a hope_n it_o be_v a_o intolerable_a shame_n that_o we_o shall_v account_v they_o as_o any_o part_n of_o our_o happiness_n last_o the_o sin_n of_o gluttony_n be_v so_o great_a and_o dangerous_a that_o christ_n think_v fit_a to_o give_v a_o especial_a warning_n against_o it_o take_v heed_n to_o yourselves_o that_o your_o heart_n be_v not_o overcharge_v with_o surfeit_v etc._n etc._n luke_n 21._o 34._o and_o you_o know_v what_o be_v the_o end_n of_o the_o rich_a glutton_n luke_n 16._o he_o that_o have_v fare_v delicious_o every_o day_n at_o last_o want_v a_o drop_n of_o water_n to_o cool_v his_o tongue_n so_o much_o for_o that_o first_o sort_n of_o temperance_n that_o of_o eat_v partition_n viii_o of_o temperance_n in_o drink_v false_a end_n of_o drink_v viz._n good_a fellowship_n put_v away_o care_n etc._n etc._n §_o 1._o the_o second_o be_v temperance_n in_o drink_v drink_v and_o the_o end_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v be_v much_o the_o same_o i_o can_v give_v no_o other_o direct_a rule_n in_o this_o than_o what_o be_v give_v in_o the_o former_a to_o wit_n that_o we_o drink_v neither_o of_o such_o sort_n of_o liquor_n nor_o in_o such_o quantity_n as_o may_v not_o agree_v with_o the_o right_a end_n of_o drink_v the_o preserve_n of_o our_o life_n and_o health_n only_o in_o this_o there_o will_v be_v need_n of_o put_v in_o one_o caution_n for_o our_o understanding_n be_v in_o more_o danger_n to_o be_v hurt_v by_o drink_n then_o meat_n we_o must_v take_v care_n to_o keep_v that_o safe_a and_o rather_o not_o drink_v what_o we_o may_v safe_o in_o respect_n of_o our_o health_n if_o it_o be_v in_o danger_n to_o distemper_v our_o reason_n this_o i_o say_v because_o it_o be_v possible_a some_o man_n brain_n may_v be_v so_o weak_a that_o their_o head_n can_v bear_v that_o ordinary_a quantity_n of_o drink_n which_o will_v do_v theâ—r_a body_n no_o harm_n and_o whoever_o be_v of_o this_o temper_n must_v strict_o abstain_v from_o that_o degree_n of_o drink_n or_o that_o to_o preserve_v our_o health_n yet_o we_o be_v not_o to_o do_v it_o by_o a_o sin_n as_o drunkenness_n most_o certain_o be_v 2._o but_o alas_o of_o those_o multitude_n of_o drunkard_n we_o have_v in_o the_o world_n drink_v this_o be_v the_o case_n but_o of_o very_a few_o most_o of_o they_o go_v far_o beyond_o what_o their_o health_n require_v yea_o or_o can_v bear_v even_o to_o the_o utter_a destruction_n thereof_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v plain_a man_n have_v set_v up_o to_o themselves_o some_o other_o end_n of_o drink_v than_o those_o allowable_a one_o foremention_v it_o may_v not_o be_v amiss_o a_o little_a to_o examine_v what_o they_o be_v and_o withal_o to_o show_v the_o unreasonableness_n of_o they_o 3._o the_o first_o fellowship_n and_o most_o own_a be_v that_o which_o they_o call_v good_a fellowship_n one_o man_n drink_v to_o keep_v another_o company_n at_o it_o but_o i_o will_v ask_v such_o a_o one_o whether_o if_o that_o man_n be_v drink_v rank_a poison_n he_o will_v pledge_v he_o for_o company_n if_o he_o say_v he_o will_v not_o i_o must_v tell_v he_o that_o by_o the_o very_a same_o nay_o far_o great_a reason_n he_o be_v not_o to_o do_v this_o for_o immoderate_a drink_n be_v that_o very_a poison_n perhaps_o it_o do_v not_o always_o work_v death_n immediate_o yet_o there_o want_v not_o many_o instance_n of_o its_o have_v do_v even_o that_o very_o many_o have_v die_v in_o their_o drunken_a fit_n but_o that_o the_o custom_n of_o it_o do_v usual_o bring_v man_n to_o their_o end_n be_v past_a doubt_n and_o therefore_o though_o the_o poison_n work_v slow_o yet_o it_o be_v still_o poison_n but_o however_o it_o do_v at_o the_o present_a work_n that_o which_o a_o wise_a man_n will_v more_o abhor_v then_o death_n it_o work_v madness_n and_o frenzy_n turn_v the_o man_n into_o a_o beast_n by_o drown_v that_o reason_n which_o shall_v difference_n he_o from_o one_o certain_o the_o effect_n of_o drink_n be_v such_o that_o have_v be_v drink_v or_o credit_n 3._o first_o soul_n this_o justice_n tie_v we_o to_o do_v no_o hurt_n to_o his_o soul_n and_o here_o my_o first_o work_n must_v be_v to_o examine_v what_o harm_n it_o be_v that_o the_o soul_n can_v receive_v it_o be_v we_o know_v a_o invisible_a substance_n which_o we_o can_v reach_v with_o our_o eye_n much_o less_o with_o our_o sword_n and_o weapon_n yet_o for_o all_o that_o it_o be_v capable_a of_o be_v hurt_v and_o wound_v and_o that_o even_o to_o death_n 4._o now_o the_o soul_n may_v be_v consider_v either_o in_o a_o natural_a or_o spiritual_a sense_n sense_n in_o the_o natural_a it_o signify_v that_o which_o we_o usual_o call_v the_o mind_n of_o a_o man_n and_o this_o we_o all_o know_v may_v be_v wound_v with_o grief_n or_o sadness_n as_o solomon_n say_v pro._n of_o two_o sort_n of_o harm_n first_o that_o of_o sin_n second_o that_o of_o punishment_n the_o latter_a whereof_o be_v certain_o the_o consequent_a of_o the_o former_a and_o therefore_o though_o
