this_o discipline_n preserve_v and_o due_o exercise_v as_o the_o church_n of_o england_n require_v and_o desire_v it_o shall_v there_o will_v be_v none_o to_o incur_v this_o horrible_a guilt_n or_o be_v guilty_a of_o this_o lamentable_a profanation_n the_o honour_n of_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n will_v be_v secure_v and_o this_o high_a profanation_n of_o it_o be_v effectual_o prevent_v and_o provide_v against_o sect_n v._o and_o if_o we_o consider_v thing_n well_o we_o shall_v find_v that_o thing_n be_v not_o so_o bad_a among_o we_o but_o that_o both_o these_o instance_n upon_o which_o man_n may_v communicate_v unworthy_o be_v pretty_a well_o provide_v against_o or_o however_o that_o they_o be_v not_o committable_a by_o any_o christian_n that_o offer_v themselves_o to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n or_o have_v any_o fear_n upon_o they_o of_o come_v unworthy_o to_o it_o let_v we_o consider_v how_o circumstance_n stand_v in_o relation_n to_o both_o 1._o and_o first_o as_o to_o this_o gross_a and_o scandalous_a ignorance_n how_o much_o soever_o some_o man_n have_v make_v it_o their_o business_n to_o cry_v out_o against_o and_o take_v liberty_n to_o traduce_v the_o member_n of_o our_o church_n as_o a_o company_n of_o blind_a and_o ignorant_a creature_n think_v that_o there_o can_v be_v light_a no_o where_o but_o where_o themselves_o shine_v and_o that_o nothing_o but_o darkness_n and_o ignorance_n must_v succeed_v when_o such_o light_n as_o themselves_o be_v remove_v and_o their_o instruction_n of_o the_o people_n cease_v yet_o thanks_o be_v to_o god_n care_n be_v take_v that_o people_n be_v competent_o instruct_v in_o the_o principle_n of_o christian_a religion_n and_o i_o hope_v much_o better_a than_o they_o have_v be_v the_o generality_n of_o the_o member_n of_o our_o church_n i_o believe_v do_v competent_o understand_v their_o religion_n and_o any_o one_o be_v impardonable_a that_o do_v not_o i_o be_o sure_a instruction_n and_o knowledge_n be_v not_o hide_v from_o they_o but_o they_o have_v both_o in_o as_o plentiful_a a_o measure_n as_o it_o may_v be_v the_o church_n have_v ever_o enjoy_v it_o be_v not_o easy_a for_o they_o to_o remain_v ignorant_a under_o such_o advantage_n and_o mean_n of_o knowledge_n as_o they_o enjoy_v and_o if_o they_o apply_v their_o mind_n to_o they_o as_o the_o church_n beg_v they_o to_o do_v they_o can_v do_v so_o i_o will_v not_o be_v afraid_a to_o have_v the_o comparison_n make_v between_o the_o member_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n and_o the_o proselyte_n to_o any_o of_o the_o various_a sect_n among_o we_o if_o the_o trial_n be_v make_v it_o will_v be_v find_v who_o be_v the_o ignorant_a who_o true_o understand_v what_o christian_a religion_n mean_n notwithstanding_o they_o may_v be_v undervalue_v and_o reproach_v by_o ignorant_a conceit_a and_o supercilious_a opposer_n if_o i_o may_v be_v allow_v to_o speak_v my_o observation_n i_o will_v say_v that_o of_o all_o the_o people_n that_o i_o ever_o converse_v yet_o with_o some_o that_o think_v so_o high_o of_o themselves_o have_v i_o find_v to_o be_v most_o true_o ignorant_a know_v and_o well_o skill_a i_o confess_v in_o the_o little_a distinction_n of_o their_o sect_n pert_a and_o bold_a in_o quarrel_v with_o the_o church_n and_o offer_v their_o little_a exception_n against_o it_o etc._n etc._n a_o sign_n that_o in_o these_o they_o be_v chief_o instruct_v but_o as_o real_o ignorant_a in_o the_o true_a ground_n and_o principle_n of_o christian_a religion_n as_o the_o mean_a of_o those_o which_o they_o so_o scornful_o and_o imperious_o pity_v as_o poor_a ignorant_a people_n but_o these_o thing_n call_v i_o too_o much_o out_o of_o my_o way_n i_o only_o mention_v they_o to_o show_v that_o man_n can_v well_o be_v count_v so_o gross_o ignorant_a as_o to_o bring_v they_o under_o the_o danger_n of_o eat_v unworthy_o upon_o that_o reason_n and_o that_o if_o any_o shall_v chance_v to_o be_v so_o it_o be_v their_o own_o fault_n only_o and_o the_o church_n be_v whole_o free_a and_o to_o be_v acquit_v from_o be_v in_o the_o least_o accessary_a to_o it_o but_o i_o pass_v the_o further_a prosecution_n of_o this_o and_o proceed_v to_o what_o be_v more_o pertinent_a to_o my_o purpose_n and_o that_o be_v to_o show_v by_o what_o measure_v a_o man_n may_v judge_v himself_o and_o his_o knowledge_n in_o this_o matter_n and_o what_o those_o measure_n of_o knowledge_n be_v that_o will_v set_v he_o above_o all_o this_o danger_n and_o i_o dare_v pronounce_v he_o to_o have_v attain_v to_o these_o that_o have_v so_o much_o knowledge_n as_o enable_v he_o to_o understand_v that_o christ_n die_v for_o the_o redemption_n of_o mankind_n to_o satisfy_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n and_o to_o purchase_v pardon_n for_o man_n upon_o the_o condition_n of_o repentance_n and_o faith_n in_o he_o that_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n be_v institute_v to_o be_v a_o commemoration_n of_o this_o death_n of_o christ_n to_o give_v god_n almighty_a hearty_a and_o devout_a praise_n for_o it_o and_o to_o assure_v we_o that_o if_o we_o true_o believe_v in_o christ_n and_o his_o merit_n repent_v we_o of_o our_o sin_n and_o resolve_v by_o god_n grace_n to_o lead_v a_o good_a life_n we_o shall_v be_v pardon_v for_o what_o be_v past_a and_o enable_v to_o perform_v what_o we_o resolve_v for_o the_o future_a true_o upon_o these_o be_v no_o mighty_a arduous_a or_o difficult_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n a_o man_n that_o be_v a_o grow_v christian_a and_o have_v live_v under_o the_o instruction_n of_o the_o church_n can_v hardly_o be_v think_v so_o ignorant_a as_o to_o come_v within_o the_o danger_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o upon_o this_o reason_n he_o will_v be_v able_a to_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n to_o understand_v that_o this_o be_v a_o sacred_a and_o religious_a service_n and_o to_o put_v a_o difference_n between_o it_o and_o a_o common_a meal_n he_o will_v understand_v what_o it_o mean_v what_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v what_o to_o expect_v and_o what_o posture_n to_o put_v himself_o into_o when_o he_o do_v approach_n to_o the_o table_n of_o his_o lord_n 2._o but_o the_o more_o important_a and_o seem_a difficulty_n be_v yet_o behind_o and_o that_o be_v to_o apply_v what_o i_o say_v to_o the_o second_o thing_n
till_o they_o have_v a_o little_a better_o strengthen_v their_o good_a resolution_n and_o temper_n than_o to_o venture_v present_o upon_o that_o service_n which_o they_o may_v abuse_v and_o profane_v by_o be_v false_a to_o the_o resolution_n they_o take_v up_o and_o the_o promise_n which_o they_o make_v in_o it_o this_o be_v the_o case_n and_o to_o the_o scruple_n take_v up_o upon_o it_o i_o return_v these_o three_o thing_n in_o answer_n and_o satisfaction_n to_o it_o 1._o that_o every_o man_n ought_v indeed_o to_o be_v true_a to_o his_o vow_n and_o promise_n as_o near_o as_o he_o can_v and_o when_o he_o have_v take_v up_o such_o a_o resolution_n and_o give_v his_o faith_n to_o god_n he_o ought_v to_o perform_v it_o and_o to_o do_v his_o utmost_a to_o stand_v to_o it_o it_o be_v certain_o a_o dreadful_a fault_n to_o play_v fast_o and_o loose_a with_o god_n almighty_a to_o promise_v and_o never_o take_v any_o due_a care_n to_o perform_v what_o a_o man_n do_v promise_v there_o be_v not_o a_o sad_a instance_n of_o a_o loose_a careless_a trifle_a spirit_n than_o to_o be_v prodigal_a in_o our_o promise_n and_o niggardly_o in_o our_o payment_n of_o they_o to_o be_v forward_o upon_o all_o occasion_n to_o promise_v great_a thing_n to_o god_n what_o reform_v what_o good_a man_n we_o will_v become_v and_o be_v but_o yet_o to_o be_v regardless_o and_o careless_a afterward_o whether_o we_o be_v such_o or_o not_o and_o never_o to_o apply_v ourselves_o in_o earnest_a to_o make_v good_a what_o we_o have_v promise_v and_o to_o put_v our_o good_a purpose_n in_o execution_n 2._o but_o yet_o second_o a_o man_n do_v thus_o afterward_o do_v not_o make_v his_o communicate_v in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n to_o be_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o any_o proportion_n to_o what_o be_v intend_v in_o this_o text._n his_o have_v receive_v the_o holy_a sacrament_n may_v aggravate_v the_o guilt_n of_o he_o after_o failure_n but_o that_o subsequent_a failure_n do_v not_o so_o affect_v his_o precedent_n communicate_v as_o to_o render_v it_o eat_v and_o drink_v thus_o unworthy_o if_o the_o purpose_n of_o the_o mind_n be_v then_o serious_a and_o sincere_a his_o receive_v the_o holy_a sacrament_n be_v far_o enough_o from_o be_v unworthy_a or_o faulty_a and_o as_o i_o say_v his_o fail_v afterward_o do_v not_o affect_v it_o all_o but_o then_o do_v i_o consider_v what_o i_o say_v can_v that_o purpose_n of_o mind_n be_v sincere_a and_o serious_a which_o afterward_o be_v not_o put_v in_o execution_n do_v not_o a_o man_n fail_v afterward_o to_o make_v it_o good_a show_v that_o he_o be_v perfidious_a and_o a_o hypocrite_n in_o make_v of_o it_o why_o no_o i_o say_v it_o do_v not_o a_o man_n may_v be_v in_o earnest_n and_o sincere_a in_o make_v a_o promise_n and_o take_v up_o a_o resolution_n and_o yet_o possible_o fail_v of_o make_v it_o good_a afterward_o his_o fail_v afterward_o be_v no_o argument_n that_o he_o be_v not_o in_o earnest_n when_o he_o make_v it_o it_o be_v argument_n indeed_o of_o his_o carelessness_n and_o irresolution_n but_o it_o may_v arise_v from_o a_o thousand_o reason_n beside_o his_o falsehood_n or_o hypocrisy_n when_o he_o make_v it_o many_o a_o man_n in_o the_o time_n of_o affliction_n and_o sickness_n for_o example_n make_v fair_a promise_n to_o god_n what_o he_o will_v be_v and_o what_o he_o will_v do_v if_o god_n please_v to_o spare_v he_o and_o this_o i_o doubt_v not_o real_o and_o in_o earnest_n and_o with_o a_o sincere_a purpose_n of_o mind_n at_o that_o time_n to_o be_v or_o to_o do_v as_o he_o promise_v and_o yet_o afterward_o that_o sense_n of_o thing_n may_v wear_v of_o and_o that_o purpose_n of_o mind_n abate_v and_o that_o specious_a promise_n may_v come_v final_o to_o nothing_o but_o this_o be_v not_o because_o the_o man_n be_v not_o then_o real_o in_o earnest_n but_o because_o afterward_o he_o be_v careless_a and_o trifle_a and_o easy_o lead_v away_o with_o temptation_n that_o interfere_v with_o his_o former_a promise_n and_o purpose_n of_o mind_n and_o so_o i_o doubt_v not_o it_o may_v be_v and_o too_o often_o be_v with_o man_n when_o they_o come_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n their_o pious_a purpose_n for_o that_o time_n may_v be_v sincere_a and_o in_o earnest_n and_o yet_o afterward_o wear_v off_o and_o come_v to_o nothing_o 3._o and_o therefore_o three_o i_o affirm_v a_o man_n in_o this_o case_n do_v come_v with_o one_o great_a qualification_n which_o shall_v attend_v his_o communicate_v in_o the_o sacrament_n i._n e._n a_o purpose_n of_o repentance_n and_o reformation_n and_o which_o will_v most_o certain_o secure_v he_o against_o all_o possibility_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o this_o text_n or_o any_o like_o it_o so_o that_o instead_o of_o stay_v away_o for_o fear_v that_o he_o shall_v change_v his_o mind_n afterward_o he_o ought_v i_o think_v the_o rather_o to_o come_v that_o he_o may_v not_o do_v so_o the_o great_a reason_n certain_o lie_v on_o this_o side_n see_v there_o be_v not_o any_o better_a course_n that_o he_o can_v at_o present_a take_v to_o fasten_v his_o good_a purpose_n and_o to_o secure_v it_o of_o effect_n than_o this_o for_o by_o this_o mean_v he_o will_v make_v his_o promise_n more_o solemn_a and_o affect_v upon_o himself_o cause_v it_o to_o stick_v the_o deep_a and_o close_o upon_o his_o own_o thought_n and_o receive_v that_o grace_n most_o infallible_o from_o god_n which_o if_o he_o be_v faithful_a and_o true_a unto_o his_o pious_a resolution_n will_v continue_v and_o he_o may_v be_v enable_v to_o act_v according_a to_o the_o intention_n of_o it_o sect_n vi_o 4._o i_o add_v now_o a_o four_o thing_n worthy_a to_o be_v consider_v in_o order_n to_o our_o satisfaction_n in_o this_o inquiry_n viz._n that_o whatever_o the_o sense_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o be_v in_o this_o text_n or_o whatever_o man_n can_v think_v to_o be_v like_o it_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n will_v secure_v they_o from_o it_o what_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n mean_v i_o have_v show_v already_o and_o i_o need_v repeat_v very_o little_a of_o it_o again_o it_o mean_v these_o two_o thing_n first_o put_v a_o difference_n between_o the_o consecrate_a element_n and_o common_a bread_n and_o wine_n the_o look_v upon_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n as_o a_o immediate_a duty_n and_o service_n of_o religion_n and_o consequent_o perform_v it_o with_o that_o devotion_n and_o seriousness_n that_o reverence_n and_o respect_n that_o man_n use_v to_o show_v in_o other_o service_n of_o religion_n the_o want_n of_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o make_v the_o corinthian_n to_o eat_v unworthy_o and_o provoke_v god_n to_o punish_v they_o with_o sundry_a disease_n and_o death_n as_o he_o afterward_o tell_v they_o they_o do_v not_o make_v any_o difference_n between_o this_o and_o a_o common_a meal_n in_o their_o own_o house_n they_o do_v not_o take_v it_o to_o be_v any_o peculiar_a act_n of_o religion_n they_o come_v intemperate_a and_o drink_v to_o the_o lord_n table_n and_o therefore_o to_o be_v sure_a be_v far_o enough_o from_o that_o reverence_n and_o devotion_n that_o so_o sacred_a a_o service_n ought_v to_o have_v be_v perform_v with_o second_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n mean_v something_o more_o not_o only_o to_o look_v upon_o this_o holy_a sacrament_n as_o a_o solemn_a and_o immediate_a act_n of_o religion_n but_o as_o the_o sacrament_n and_o immediate_a representation_n of_o christ_n body_n i._n e._n his_o body_n break_v and_o slay_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n and_o the_o communicate_v therein_o to_o be_v the_o commemoration_n of_o his_o death_n and_o partake_v in_o the_o bless_a effect_n of_o it_o to_o look_v beyond_o the_o element_n to_o that_o which_o they_o be_v design_v to_o signify_v and_o sacramental_o be_v to_o look_v upon_o the_o bread_n not_o as_o common_a bread_n but_o the_o substitute_n of_o christ_n body_n and_o the_o wine_n not_o as_o ordinary_a wine_n but_o the_o figure_n of_o his_o blood_n and_o so_o regard_v the_o whole_a service_n both_o as_o the_o most_o devout_a and_o solemn_a commemoration_n of_o christ_n death_n and_o passion_n for_o the_o expiation_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o partake_v as_o true_o and_o effectual_o in_o the_o benefit_n and_o blessing_n of_o his_o body_n and_o blood_n as_o if_o we_o do_v eat_v and_o drink_v that_o very_a body_n and_o blood_n themselves_o this_o be_v the_o great_a end_n of_o this_o service_n and_o the_o reason_n of_o our_o lord_n institution_n of_o it_o and_o to_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n be_v to_o understand_v it_o so_o and_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o such_o which_o it_o be_v most_o certain_a these_o corinthian_n be_v far_o from_o do_v either_o so_o ignorant_a as_o not_o to_o understand_v the_o reason_n of_o
it_o or_o so_o gross_o irreverent_a and_o careless_a as_o not_o to_o consider_v it_o for_o have_v they_o do_v either_o much_o more_o both_o they_o can_v hardly_o have_v be_v guilty_a of_o such_o profaneness_n or_o of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o as_o they_o do_v and_o that_o be_v what_o i_o will_v say_v in_o this_o period_n that_o whatever_o the_o sense_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o be_v in_o this_o place_n the_o discern_a the_o lord_n body_n will_v secure_v man_n from_o it_o and_o this_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o make_v plain_a in_o these_o follow_a consideration_n 1._o the_o not_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n be_v here_o make_v the_o reason_n of_o their_o eat_n and_o drink_v unworthy_o this_o i_o have_v clear_v already_o to_o be_v the_o reason_n both_o of_o the_o sin_n and_o punishment_n too_o from_o whence_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n will_v secure_v from_o both_o for_o if_o man_n eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o because_o they_o do_v not_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n then_o if_o they_o do_v discern_v it_o they_o will_v not_o eat_v unworthy_o for_o the_o old_a rule_n be_v true_a in_o morality_n as_o well_o as_o nature_n and_o will_v hold_v in_o this_o instance_n as_o well_o as_o other_o take_v away_o the_o cause_n and_o the_o effect_n will_v cease_v 2._o but_o second_o this_o appear_v clear_a in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n for_o there_o be_v a_o direct_a and_o immediate_a virtue_n and_o power_n in_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n to_o cause_v in_o man_n all_o those_o qualification_n that_o render_v they_o meet_v for_o this_o service_n and_o sufficient_o secure_v they_o from_o eat_v unworthy_o as_o the_o corinthian_n do_v yea_o and_o from_o do_v so_o in_o any_o sense_n like_o unto_o they_o for_o first_o in_o general_n if_o man_n discern_v the_o lord_n body_n they_o will_v present_o perceive_v that_o this_o be_v a_o most_o sacred_a solemn_a service_n of_o religion_n and_o not_o any_o ordinary_a thing_n and_o by_o this_o will_v not_o only_o be_v admonish_v of_o that_o reverence_n and_o devotion_n that_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v perform_v with_o but_o strong_o induce_v to_o it_o man_n natural_o have_v some_o sense_n of_o reverence_n and_o awe_n upon_o their_o mind_n when_o they_o be_v address_v themselves_o to_o devotion_n and_o when_o they_o engage_v into_o the_o service_n of_o religion_n and_o so_o they_o will_v have_v here_o also_o when_o they_o consider_v what_o a_o solemn_a service_n of_o religion_n this_o be_v and_o have_v always_o be_v esteem_v to_o be_v in_o the_o christian_a church_n and_o true_o they_o can_v hardly_o be_v otherwise_o if_o they_o have_v any_o sense_n of_o religion_n or_o any_o dread_n of_o the_o almighty_a upon_o their_o spirit_n and_o second_o if_o man_n discern_v the_o lord_n body_n here_o so_o as_o to_o understand_v the_o special_a reason_n of_o this_o institution_n that_o it_o be_v to_o commemorate_v the_o mighty_a love_n of_o our_o lord_n in_o die_v for_o we_o that_o it_o be_v to_o be_v a_o religious_a solemn_a representation_n of_o his_o meritorious_a bitter_a death_n and_o passion_n for_o our_o sin_n they_o will_v find_v that_o it_o will_v even_o natural_o beget_v in_o they_o repentance_n and_o faith_n and_o joy_n and_o charity_n and_o thankfulness_n and_o a_o very_a high_a sense_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o christ_n towards_o poor_a sinner_n these_o be_v the_o high_a and_o meet_a preparation_n for_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n and_o those_o qualification_n that_o fit_v we_o for_o the_o receive_n of_o it_o eat_n and_o drink_v unworthy_o we_o may_v full_o satisfy_v ourselves_o by_o consider_v the_o apostle_n deal_v with_o they_o in_o the_o latter_a part_n of_o this_o chapter_n where_o he_o fall_v upon_o
