consistency_n with_o reason_n or_o truth_n he_o be_v in_o a_o ready_a posture_n to_o throw_v off_o from_o his_o soul_n all_o credence_n of_o the_o divine_a authority_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o to_o esteem_v it_o no_o better_o than_o a_o fable_n devise_v by_o man_n nor_o will_v all_o that_o which_o he_o judge_v serious_a and_o sound_n and_o good_a in_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n they_o have_v slay_v they_o can_v not_o tell_v what_o to_o do_v with_o nine_o part_n of_o ten_o of_o they_o in_o this_o case_n so_o much_o of_o the_o flesh_n of_o this_o ox_n or_o sheep_n as_o these_o man_n know_v not_o how_o to_o dispose_v of_o to_o any_o serviceable_a end_n can_v proper_o therefore_o be_v say_v to_o be_v lose_v or_o to_o be_v cast_v aside_o by_o they_o as_o good_a for_o nothing_o because_o it_o be_v a_o natural_a part_n of_o that_o beast_n which_o they_o be_v necessitate_v to_o slay_v for_o the_o preservation_n of_o their_o life_n to_o this_o objection_n also_o we_o answer_v 1._o by_o way_n of_o concession_n it_o be_v true_a if_o god_n have_v intend_v to_o save_v but_o the_o one_o half_a or_o have_v it_o be_v a_o far_o less_o proportion_n than_o so_o of_o those_o person_n man_n and_o woman_n who_o now_o shall_v be_v save_v he_o can_v not_o have_v do_v it_o in_o that_o way_n of_o wisdom_n and_o justice_n wherein_o he_o now_o intend_v to_o save_v man_n by_o any_o sacrifice_n or_o atonement_n of_o less_o value_n then_o have_v now_o be_v offer_v for_o those_o who_o shall_v be_v save_v and_o consequent_o which_o shall_v not_o have_v have_v a_o overplus_n and_o redundancy_n of_o merit_n in_o it_o sufficient_a to_o save_v many_o million_o of_o person_n beside_o those_o who_o in_o such_o a_o case_n and_o under_o such_o a_o supposition_n shall_v be_v save_v by_o it_o but_o 2._o i_o answer_v further_o by_o way_n of_o exception_n that_o notwithstanding_o this_o if_o god_n shall_v have_v give_v such_o a_o sacrifice_n or_o atonement_n for_o the_o save_n of_o a_o few_o only_a which_o be_v sufficient_a to_o save_v more_o yea_o all_o without_o exception_n and_o not_o intend_v the_o save_n of_o all_o those_o who_o be_v capable_a of_o salvation_n by_o it_o he_o shall_v voluntary_o and_o without_o any_o necessity_n at_o all_o nay_o contrary_a to_o the_o importunate_a cry_n of_o the_o extreme_a misery_n of_o so_o many_o thousand_o in_o his_o ear_n have_v make_v frustrate_a and_o void_a the_o far_o great_a and_o rich_a part_n of_o that_o sacrifice_n or_o atonement_n as_o suppose_v in_o the_o instance_n give_v of_o the_o man_n that_o in_o a_o exigent_n be_v necessitate_v to_o slay_v the_o ox_n or_o sheep_n speak_v of_o for_o the_o preservation_n of_o their_o life_n it_o be_v true_a they_o can_v not_o be_v charge_v with_o spoil_v or_o make_v waste_n of_o that_o which_o remain_v of_o the_o flesh_n of_o either_o beside_o what_o be_v sufficient_a for_o themselves_o simple_o because_o they_o slay_v the_o ox_n for_o their_o own_o necessity_n be_v in_o a_o condition_n of_o imminent_a danger_n of_o their_o life_n otherwise_o but_o suppose_v there_o have_v be_v many_o poor_a soul_n hard_o at_o hand_n in_o as_o much_o danger_n of_o starve_v as_o themselves_o in_o case_n they_o have_v refuse_v or_o neglect_v to_o have_v give_v unto_o they_o of_o the_o remain_a flesh_n we_o speak_v of_o and_o will_v rather_o have_v bury_v it_o under_o ground_n where_o they_o may_v not_o find_v it_o or_o make_v it_o any_o way_n unfit_a for_o meat_n and_o nourishment_n unto_o they_o in_o this_o case_n they_o may_v just_o be_v charge_v with_o make_v spoil_n and_o waste_v of_o that_o flesh_n which_o remain_v unto_o they_o when_o themselves_o have_v eat_v and_o that_o upon_o term_n of_o the_o great_a unmercifulness_n and_o unworthiness_n in_o like_a manner_n do_v they_o who_o acknowledge_v the_o death_n of_o christ_n sufficient_a for_o all_o and_o yet_o affirm_v it_o to_o be_v give_v or_o intend_v by_o god_n only_o to_o some_o few_o charge_v he_o and_o that_o upon_o term_n of_o much_o unworthiness_n and_o very_o dishonourable_a to_o he_o to_o evacuate_v or_o make_v of_o no_o use_n or_o effect_v the_o far_o great_a part_n of_o this_o death_n there_o be_v so_o many_o million_o of_o soul_n before_o he_o in_o the_o utmost_a extremity_n of_o misery_n to_o who_o it_o may_v and_o that_o with_o double_a and_o treble_a honour_n
but_o to_o prevent_v the_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n in_o all_o man_n in_o order_n to_o their_o non-damnation_n and_o that_o they_o may_v be_v save_v 3._o and_o last_o the_o doctrine_n which_o avouch_v that_o christ_n die_v for_o all_o man_n clear_o resolve_v the_o reprobation_n of_o all_o that_o be_v or_o ever_o come_v to_o be_v reprobate_v into_o themselves_o or_o their_o own_o voluntary_a and_o deliberate_a course_n of_o sin_v or_o persist_v in_o unbelief_n as_o the_o cause_n thereof_o and_o so_o fair_o discharge_v god_n and_o his_o decree_n as_o no_o way_n accessary_a unto_o it_o whereas_o the_o adverse_a opinion_n resolve_v it_o into_o the_o mere_a pleasure_n or_o peremptory_a will_n of_o god_n in_o his_o decree_n of_o reprobation_n affirm_v this_o to_o be_v the_o principal_a if_o not_o the_o sole_a and_o adequate_a cause_n of_o it_o so_o that_o there_o be_v a_o very_a vast_a difference_n between_o the_o one_o opinion_n and_o the_o other_o in_o their_o respective_a representation_n of_o god_n unto_o his_o creature_n in_o point_n of_o grace_n goodness_n and_o loveliness_n on_o the_o one_o hand_n as_o of_o rigour_n hardness_n and_o unloveliness_n on_o the_o other_o hand_n it_o be_v true_a god_n be_v very_o severe_a terrible_a and_o unrelenting_a in_o the_o execution_n of_o his_o penal_a decree_n upon_o those_o who_o voluntary_o expose_v themselves_o to_o the_o doom_n and_o dint_n of_o they_o in_o which_o respect_n the_o scripture_n speak_v oft_o of_o his_o severity_n but_o in_o the_o frame_n of_o they_o his_o primary_n intention_n be_v as_o have_v be_v say_v gracious_a no_o way_n inconsistent_a with_o or_o repugnant_a to_o the_o peace_n and_o comfort_n of_o any_o of_o his_o creature_n but_o calculate_v with_o dueness_n of_o proportion_n and_o respect_n for_o the_o advancement_n of_o they_o yet_o 2._o against_o the_o main_a argument_n last_o insist_v upon_o it_o may_v be_v further_o object_v 2._o §._o 15._o object_n 2._o they_o who_o deny_v that_o christ_n die_v for_o any_o but_o for_o the_o elect_a only_o represent_v god_n altogether_o as_o gracious_a and_o lovely_a unto_o his_o creature_n as_o they_o who_o affirm_v that_o he_o die_v for_o all_o because_o the_o former_a hold_n and_o teach_v withal_o that_o god_n real_o intend_v that_o all_o those_o for_o who_o christ_n die_v shall_v be_v actual_o save_v hereby_o whereas_o the_o latter_a hold_n that_o though_o christ_n die_v for_o all_o yet_o he_o die_v only_o so_o or_o upon_o such_o term_n for_o they_o that_o notwithstanding_o his_o die_v for_o they_o they_o may_v all_o perish_v now_o do_v it_o not_o argue_v as_o much_o or_o more_o grace_n and_o goodness_n in_o god_n to_o provide_v certain_o and_o above_o all_o possibility_n of_o miscarry_v for_o the_o salvation_n of_o a_o few_o then_o to_o provide_v a_o bare_a possibility_n only_o of_o salvation_n for_o all_o or_o for_o the_o salvation_n of_o all_o after_o such_o a_o manner_n and_o upon_o such_o term_n only_o that_o all_o notwithstanding_o this_o provision_n make_v for_o they_o may_v very_o possible_o perish_v to_o this_o also_o i_o answer_v 1._o that_o they_o who_o teach_v that_o christ_n die_v for_o all_o man_n do_v not_o teach_v that_o answ_n he_o die_v to_o make_v provision_n only_o for_o a_o bare_a possibility_n that_o all_o may_v be_v save_v but_o such_o a_o provision_n which_o be_v full_o and_o rich_o sufficient_a for_o the_o salvation_n of_o all_o man_n yea_o so_o sufficient_a that_o all_o man_n if_o they_o be_v not_o intolerable_o and_o unexcusable_o negligent_a and_o careless_a in_o a_o matter_n of_o so_o transcendent_a a_o concernment_n unto_o they_o may_v and_o most_o certain_o shall_v be_v save_v the_o provision_n which_o god_n have_v make_v by_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n for_o the_o salvation_n of_o all_o be_v so_o redundant_o plentiful_a that_o there_o be_v no_o place_n or_o possibility_n leave_v for_o the_o miscarry_v of_o any_o man_n but_o by_o a_o neglect_n of_o it_o only_o how_o shall_v we_o escape_v say_v the_o apostle_n if_o we_o neglect_v so_o great_a a_o salvation_n 3_o salvation_n hebr._n 2._o 3_o etc._n etc._n clear_o imply_v that_o if_o they_o do_v not_o neglect_v it_o but_o serious_o and_o diligent_o mind_n and_o look_v after_o it_o they_o shall_v escape_v viz._n the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o the_o vengeance_n of_o hell_n fire_n and_o consequent_o be_v save_v otherwise_o in_o case_n their_o regard_n or_o esteem_v of_o this_o salvation_n shall_v be_v accompany_v with_o the_o same_o danger_n or_o destruction_n which_o their_o neglect_n will_v bring_v upon_o they_o the_o apostle_n may_v as_o well_o or_o indeed_o rather_o have_v say_v how_o shall_v we_o escape_v whether_o we_o neglect_v this_o great_a salvation_n or_o no_o 2._o there_o be_v no_o comparison_n for_o matter_n of_o grace_n goodness_n or_o bounty_n between_o such_o a_o provision_n for_o the_o salvation_n of_o all_o man_n without_o exception_n whereby_o all_o and_o every_o person_n may_v if_o they_o be_v not_o wilful_o bend_v upon_o their_o own_o destruction_n be_v save_v and_o between_o such_o whereby_o there_o be_v no_o possibility_n save_v only_o for_o a_o few_o a_o number_n inconsiderable_a compare_v with_o the_o whole_a to_o be_v save_v nor_o be_v that_o certainty_n or_o necessity_n of_o the_o salvation_n of_o a_o few_o which_o be_v pretend_v to_o be_v consult_v or_o intend_v in_o this_o latter_a provision_n be_v accompany_v with_o the_o exposure_n of_o so_o many_o million_o of_o million_o of_o precious_a soul_n to_o inevitable_a damnation_n any_o way_n considerable_a in_o point_n of_o grace_n with_o that_o great_a and_o bless_a opportunity_n which_o by_o the_o former_a provision_n be_v put_v into_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o world_n and_o of_o every_o person_n of_o mankind_n without_o exception_n to_o escape_v the_o vengeance_n which_o â—s_v to_o come_v if_o they_o please_v and_o withal_o to_o be_v crown_v with_o a_o incorruptible_a crown_n of_o glory_n especial_o if_o it_o be_v consider_v withal_o that_o he_o that_o make_v such_o a_o provision_n for_o a_o few_o have_v wherewithal_o in_o abundance_n and_o this_o disposable_a contrivable_a to_o no_o other_o use_n or_o purpose_n to_o have_v provide_v upon_o the_o same_o term_n for_o all_o and_o that_o all_o the_o reason_n he_o have_v for_o his_o non-disposing_a of_o it_o this_o way_n i_o mean_v for_o the_o benefit_n and_o blessing_n of_o all_o be_v only_o his_o mere_a will_n and_o pleasure_n suppose_v a_o man_n have_v a_o thousand_o quarter_n of_o wheat_n or_o the_o like_a which_o he_o know_v not_o what_o to_o do_v with_o or_o to_o what_o use_n to_o convert_v it_o but_o only_o to_o the_o relief_n of_o a_o company_n of_o poor_a indigent_a creature_n ready_a to_o be_v affamished_a and_o perish_v through_o hunger_n in_o case_n this_o man_n shall_v actual_o relieve_v only_o two_o or_o three_o person_n in_o this_o distress_n with_o part_n of_o this_o abundance_n there_o be_v a_o thousand_o before_o he_o in_o the_o same_o extremity_n and_o in_o no_o possibility_n of_o be_v relieve_v from_o any_o other_o hand_n but_o shall_v rather_o choose_v to_o cast_v the_o residue_n of_o his_o grain_n into_o the_o sea_n or_o bury_v it_o under_o ground_n or_o some_o way_n or_o other_o destroy_v the_o serviceableness_n of_o it_o unto_o man_n then_o dispose_v of_o it_o towards_o the_o relief_n of_o any_o of_o the_o rest_n will_v not_o such_o a_o act_n as_o this_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o unnaturalness_n and_o affectate_v unmercifulness_n of_o it_o quite_o drown_v the_o grace_n and_o loveliness_n of_o his_o charity_n in_o relieve_v those_o few_o in_o like_a manner_n they_o who_o pretend_v the_o exaltation_n of_o the_o grace_n and_o love_n of_o god_n towards_o man_n in_o give_v christ_n to_o die_v for_o they_o who_o death_n they_o grant_v to_o be_v sufficient_a in_o point_n of_o merit_n to_o save_v all_o man_n without_o exception_n and_o yet_o teach_v salvation_n of_o those_o few_o by_o it_o then_o to_o accommodate_v and_o relieve_v thereby_o the_o residue_n of_o mankind_n in_o their_o sad_a and_o utmost_a extremity_n what_o do_v they_o less_o this_o i_o answer_v 1._o that_o neither_o the_o argument_n yet_o in_o hand_n nor_o the_o answer_v give_v to_o the_o answ_n former_a objection_n intermeddle_v little_a or_o much_o with_o the_o liberty_n or_o rightfulness_n of_o power_n vest_v in_o god_n to_o deny_v mercy_n where_o he_o please_v as_o to_o show_v it_o likewise_o where_o and_o to_o who_o he_o please_v but_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o insist_v upon_o the_o demonstration_n of_o this_o viz._n that_o they_o who_o ascribe_v unto_o god_n reality_n of_o intention_n to_o make_v provision_n for_o the_o salvation_n of_o all_o man_n without_o exception_n in_o and_o by_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n upon_o those_o gracious_a term_n for_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o it_o which_o have_v be_v specify_v render_v he_o far_o more_o gracious_a lovely_a and_o attractive_a to_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n than_o they_o who_o present_v he_o with_o intention_n of_o provide_v only_o for_o a_o few_o thereby_o upon_o what_o term_n soever_o with_o the_o harden_v of_o himself_o against_o and_o neglect_v of_o all_o the_o rest_n be_v incomparable_o far_o the_o great_a number_n in_o their_o great_a extremity_n and_o this_o i_o suppose_v we_o have_v make_v good_a against_o all_o rational_a contradiction_n but_o 2._o whereas_o we_o reflect_v upon_o such_o a_o act_n which_o our_o adversary_n imagine_v to_o be_v in_o god_n whereby_o they_o say_v notwithstanding_o a_o sufficiency_n of_o merit_n before_o he_o in_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n for_o the_o salvation_n of_o all_o as_o well_o as_o of_o a_o few_o yet_o he_o rather_o suffer_v this_o precious_a sufficiency_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o redundancy_n of_o it_o over_o and_o above_o the_o provision_n make_v by_o it_o for_o a_o few_o to_o vanish_v or_o be_v spill_v then_o to_o intend_v any_o help_n or_o heal_n by_o it_o unto_o the_o generality_n of_o man_n whereas_o i_o say_v we_o censure_v such_o a_o act_n as_o this_o as_o ill_o consist_v with_o or_o obscure_v the_o beauty_n and_o loveliness_n of_o that_o gracious_a act_n of_o god_n in_o provide_v for_o the_o salvation_n of_o a_o few_o we_o do_v not_o herein_o reflect_v prejudice_n in_o the_o least_o upon_o any_o liberty_n or_o rightfulness_n of_o power_n true_o competent_a unto_o or_o vest_v in_o god_n but_o only_o show_v and_o assert_v the_o deformity_n or_o moral_a contradictiousness_n between_o two_o act_n which_o notwithstanding_o our_o adversary_n ascribe_v as_o well_o the_o one_o as_o the_o other_o unto_o god_n 3._o concern_v that_o liberty_n of_o show_v and_o deny_v mercy_n where_o and_o to_o who_o he_o please_v which_o the_o objection_n in_o hand_n assert_v unto_o god_n we_o answer_v that_o how_o absolute_a soever_o this_o liberty_n in_o he_o may_v be_v conceive_v to_o be_v simple_o or_o in_o name_n psal_n 138._o 2_o meaning_n that_o what_o ever_o attribute_n of_o his_o which_o be_v either_o in_o whole_a or_o in_o â—art_n his_o name_n at_o any_o time_n seem_v to_o oppose_v or_o stand_v up_o against_o the_o performance_n of_o any_o promise_n or_o declaration_n of_o mercy_n make_v by_o he_o yet_o he_o always_o magnify_v his_o promise_n by_o give_v real_a full_a and_o seasonable_a performance_n thereunto_o he_o pass_v not_o for_o the_o vail_n or_o obscure_v any_o other_o part_n of_o his_o name_n so_o that_o his_o truth_n and_o faithfulness_n in_o his_o word_n may_v be_v
