the_o kingdom_n of_o christ_n and_o who_o to_o the_o kingdom_n of_o satan_n howbeit_o he_o be_v a_o spiritual_a king_n which_o rule_v the_o world_n by_o his_o word_n and_o whosoever_o receive_v his_o word_n pertain_v to_o his_o kingdom_n but_o he_o that_o be_v not_o under_o this_o sceptre_n neither_o hear_v his_o word_n be_v not_o of_o god_n neither_o pertain_v to_o his_o kingdom_n but_o be_v the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o cover_v that_o practice_n under_o this_o false_a pretence_n we_o be_v so_o prone_a and_o ready_a unto_o this_o that_o even_o many_o of_o the_o saint_n have_v very_o much_o complain_v of_o this_o evil_a and_o because_o of_o it_o have_v oftentimes_o above_o measure_n afflict_v their_o body_n for_o the_o flesh_n be_v so_o crafty_a and_o marvelous_a sutle_n to_o prepare_v delight_n for_o itself_o that_o no_o man_n can_v sufficient_o take_v heed_n of_o it_o yea_o it_o be_v needful_a that_o a_o man_n here_o do_v never_o leave_v to_o care_n and_o fear_n the_o other_o sort_n of_o man_n be_v those_o blind_a holy_a one_o which_o think_v that_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n and_o the_o righteousness_n thereof_o consist_v in_o meat_n and_o drink_n and_o in_o choose_a apparel_n and_o do_v beside_o their_o own_o work_n regard_v nothing_o when_o they_o have_v so_o fast_v that_o they_o have_v make_v their_o head_n disease_v and_o their_o stomach_n distemper_v 8.8_o superstitious_a fast_v &_o abstinence_n from_o meat_n 1._o cor._n 8.8_o and_o do_v bring_v unto_o their_o body_n some_o great_a infirmity_n or_o sickness_n they_o then_o think_v that_o they_o have_v be_v marvelous_a holy_a and_o have_v wrought_v incomparable_a good_a work_n but_o paul_n say_v meat_n make_v not_o we_o acceptable_a to_o god_n for_o neither_o if_o we_o eat_v have_v we_o the_o more_o neither_o if_o we_o eat_v not_o have_v we_o the_o less_o and_o colos_n 2._o he_o write_v thus_o much_o in_o effect_n beware_v of_o the_o worship_v of_o angel_n which_o have_v a_o show_n of_o wisdom_n because_o of_o humbleness_n and_o superstition_n whereby_o they_o spare_v not_o the_o body_n while_o they_o withdraw_v from_o it_o the_o measure_n of_o food_n due_a unto_o it_o bestow_v nothing_o upon_o it_o whereby_o it_o may_v be_v feed_v this_o preposterous_a worship_v of_o angel_n yea_o in_o deed_n superstition_n do_v so_o deceive_v gerson_n otherwise_o a_o notable_a man_n that_o he_o praise_v the_o charterhouse_n monk_n for_o that_o they_o do_v so_o constant_o abstain_v from_o flesh_n that_o even_o when_o they_o be_v sick_a they_o will_v eat_v none_o although_o they_o may_v preserve_v themselves_o even_o from_o death_n thereby_o but_o what_o if_o god_n shall_v judge_v they_o as_o killer_n of_o their_o own_o body_n for_o there_o can_v be_v none_o at_o all_o either_o ordinance_n or_o order_n yea_o or_o vow_v contrary_a to_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n &_o if_o there_o be_v any_o such_o sure_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v of_o no_o force_n even_o as_o if_o thou_o have_v vow_v adultery_n body_n necessary_a provision_n must_v be_v make_v for_o the_o body_n now_o god_n both_o here_o by_o paul_n and_o elsewhere_o have_v command_v that_o necessary_a provision_n shall_v be_v make_v for_o the_o body_n and_o have_v forbid_v that_o we_o shall_v procure_v the_o death_n of_o it_o wherefore_o those_o thing_n that_o be_v profitable_a to_o preserve_v it_o whether_o they_o be_v flesh_n or_o egg_n or_o any_o thing_n else_o must_v be_v give_v unto_o it_o in_o what_o day_n or_o time_n soever_o whether_o it_o be_v the_o sixth_o or_o first_o day_n of_o the_o week_n whether_o it_o be_v lend_v or_o after_o easter_n in_o the_o mean_a season_n whatsoever_o order_n law_n and_o vow_n yea_o even_o of_o the_o pope_n be_v neglect_v for_o it_o be_v not_o lawful_a for_o any_o man_n no_o not_o for_o the_o angel_n to_o forbid_v any_o thing_n against_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n howbeit_o this_o madness_n proceed_v from_o that_o darkness_n and_o blindness_n whereby_o miserable_a man_n do_v regard_v the_o work_n only_o and_o think_v that_o they_o shall_v obtain_v salvation_n through_o the_o greatness_n and_o multitude_n of_o work_n fast_v the_o true_a end_n of_o fast_v but_o paul_n will_v that_o our_o fasting_n and_o other_o chastising_n of_o the_o flesh_n be_v the_o weapon_n of_o light_n whereby_o the_o work_n of_o darkness_n may_v be_v overcome_v and_o not_o the_o body_n destroy_v wherefore_o there_o ought_v to_o be_v no_o other_o use_n among_o christian_n of_o fasting_n watch_n and_o labour_n as_o it_o be_v all_o one_o before_o god_n whether_o thou_o eat_v fish_n or_o flesh_n whether_o thou_o drink_v wine_n or_o water_n whether_o thou_o wear_v red_a or_o green_a garment_n all_o these_o be_v the_o good_a creature_n of_o god_n make_v unto_o this_o end_n that_o we_o may_v use_v they_o have_v regard_n only_o to_o this_o that_o thou_o may_v use_v they_o with_o a_o mean_a and_o may_v abstain_v thyself_o so_o much_o from_o they_o as_o shall_v suffice_v to_o overcome_v the_o work_n of_o darkness_n wherefore_o it_o be_v unpossible_a that_o a_o common_a manner_n of_o this_o abstinence_n shall_v be_v appoint_v indifferent_o to_o all_o all_o one_o common_a manner_n of_o fast_v can_v be_v appoint_v to_o all_o for_o the_o constitution_n of_o all_o man_n body_n be_v not_o alike_o it_o be_v above_o measure_n to_o one_o depart_v and_o dye_v and_o so_o possess_v a_o kingdom_n over_o all_o this_o therefore_o be_v the_o sum_n of_o this_o text_n they_o be_v foresee_v who_o the_o father_n will_v glorify_v but_o they_o that_o any_o shall_v marvel_v if_o we_o also_o sometime_o faint_a in_o faith_n yea_o and_o let_v no_o man_n be_v afraid_a although_o it_o fall_v out_o that_o sometime_o through_o infirmity_n he_o so_o at_o large_a not_o much_o before_o when_o christ_n will_v confirm_v his_o disciple_n in_o faith_n he_o promise_v they_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v glorify_v here_o he_o add_v and_o declare_v how_o and_o by_o what_o mean_v they_o must_v be_v glorify_v affirm_v that_o that_o must_v be_v by_o his_o departure_n that_o be_v by_o his_o death_n &_o that_o by_o that_o mean_a he_o must_v obtain_v his_o kingdom_n this_o he_o have_v often_o repeat_v unto_o they_o so_o that_o now_o it_o do_v become_v they_o to_o know_v and_o understand_v it_o therefore_o he_o say_v whither_o i_o go_v you_o know_v and_o the_o way_n you_o know_v but_o they_o do_v not_o yet_o thorough_o understand_v it_o as_o the_o word_n of_o thomas_n do_v declare_v now_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o there_o be_v faith_n in_o the_o
