have_v uttter_o lose_v their_o parent_n friend_n country_n and_o most_o themselves_o so_o on_o the_o other_o side_n do_v a_o strong_a and_o sublime_a mind_n make_v a_o man_n free_a from_o all_o care_n and_o anguish_n insomuch_o as_o it_o contemn_v death_n upon_o this_o account_n that_o all_o who_o suffer_v it_o be_v in_o the_o same_o case_n as_o before_o they_o be_v in_o be_v and_o be_v fortify_v and_o those_o which_o induce_v discontent_n be_v external_n evil_n and_o either_o public_a of_o which_o sort_n be_v tyranny_n war_n destruction_n of_o one_o country_n pestilence_n famine_n and_o the_o like_a or_o private_a of_o which_o sort_n be_v servitude_n banishment_n imprisonment_n infamy_n loss_n of_o friend_n wife_n child_n estate_n etc._n etc._n viii_o now_o the_o difference_n betwixt_o all_o these_o thing_n on_o the_o one_o part_n and_o pain_n and_o discontent_n on_o the_o other_o be_v this_o that_o pain_n and_o discontent_n be_v absolute_a evil_n in_o themselves_o the_o other_o be_v evil_n only_o respective_o or_o as_o they_o may_v be_v the_o cause_n of_o pain_n and_o discontent_n nor_o be_v there_o any_o reason_n why_o they_o shall_v be_v avoid_v unless_o in_o that_o respect_n only_o ix_o upon_o the_o chief_a of_o these_o cause_n of_o fear_n we_o shall_v touch_v and_o in_o order_n as_o they_o be_v here_o enumerate_v in_o the_o mean_a time_n be_v please_v to_o observe_v that_o fortitude_n be_v a_o disposition_n of_o the_o mind_n not_o ingenerate_a by_o nature_n but_o acquire_v by_o long_o consult_v with_o reason_n for_o fortitude_n be_v very_o much_o different_a from_o audacity_n ferocity_n inconsiderate_a temerity_n which_o be_v find_v even_o in_o the_o bruit_n animal_n and_o be_v proper_a to_o man_n and_o to_o such_o man_n only_o as_o act_v according_a to_o prudence_n and_o the_o advice_n of_o right_a reason_n be_v not_o to_o be_v measure_v by_o the_o hot_a temperament_n and_o strength_n of_o the_o body_n but_o by_o the_o firmness_n of_o the_o mind_n constant_o adhaer_v to_o a_o honest_a intention_n or_o purpose_n chap._n xxi_o of_o fortitude_n oppose_v to_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o go_n in_o the_o first_o place_n it_o seem_v convenient_a that_o we_o discuss_v a_o certain_a twofold_a fear_n much_o transcend_v all_o other_o forasmuch_o as_o if_o any_o thing_n have_v produce_v the_o supreme_a pleasure_n and_o that_o which_o themselves_o as_o if_o they_o be_v real_a ii_o and_o that_o which_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o the_o great_a fear_n and_o consequent_o of_o the_o great_a perturbation_n to_o man_n be_v this_o that_o conceive_v there_o be_v certain_a blissful_a and_o immortal_a nature_n which_o they_o call_v god_n in_o the_o world_n they_o do_v yet_o think_v they_o to_o have_v such_o will_n such_o passion_n such_o operation_n as_o be_v plain_o repugnant_a to_o those_o attribute_n of_o beatitude_n and_o immortality_n such_o be_v perpetual_a solicitude_n employment_n fit_v of_o anger_n and_o kindness_n and_o sacrifice_n etc._n etc._n all_o which_o presuppose_v great_a disquiet_n imbecility_n fear_v and_o the_o want_n of_o external_a assistance_n vii_o nor_o need_v you_o fear_v that_o this_o tenent_n shall_v subject_v you_o to_o the_o censure_n of_o be_v impious_a because_o in_o truth_n he_o be_v not_o impious_a who_o deny_v and_o casheir_n the_o vulgar_a god_n of_o the_o multitude_n but_o he_o who_o ascribe_v to_o the_o god_n the_o opinion_n of_o the_o multitude_n for_o those_o be_v not_o genuine_a praenotion_n but_o false_a opinion_n which_o be_v common_o deliver_v by_o man_n concern_v door_n of_o every_o temple_n with_o the_o blood_n of_o victim_n but_o he_o who_o contemplate_v all_o thing_n with_o a_o serene_a and_o quiet_a mind_n frame_v to_o himself_o out_o of_o a_o genuine_a praenotion_n true_a and_o correspondent_a conception_n concern_v the_o divine_a nature_n and_o be_v thereunto_o induce_v not_o by_o hope_n or_o reward_n but_o mere_o by_o apprehension_n of_o the_o majesty_n and_o supreme_a excellency_n of_o its_o essence_n do_v love_v it_o and_o worship_v it_o with_o the_o high_a reverence_n and_o veneration_n of_o his_o mind_n and_o admit_v no_o such_o sometime_o because_o they_o apprehend_v it_o as_o the_o cessation_n of_o all_o their_o enjoyment_n or_o privation_n of_o all_o thing_n that_o be_v dear_a to_o they_o in_o life_n but_o in_o both_o these_o respect_n altogether_o without_o cause_n since_o this_o thing_n not-to-live_a or_o not-to-be_a aught_o to_o be_v no_o occasion_n of_o terror_n because_o when_o once_o we_o come_v to_o that_o we_o shall_v have_v no_o faculty_n leave_v whereby_o to_o know_v that_o not-to-live_a have_v any_o thing_n of_o evil_n in_o it_o iv._o hereupon_o we_o may_v conclude_v that_o those_o be_v great_a fool_n who_o abhor_v to_o think_v that_o after_o death_n their_o body_n shall_v be_v tear_v by_o wild_a beast_n burn_v in_o the_o flame_n of_o the_o funeral_n pile_n devour_v by_o worm_n etc._n etc._n those_o be_v great_a fool_n who_o take_v it_o grievous_o that_o they_o shall_v no_o long_o enjoy_v the_o conversation_n of_o their_o wife_n child_n friend_n no_o long_o do_v they_o good_a office_n nor_o afford_v they_o their_o assistance_n for_o these_o do_v not_o consider_v that_o then_o they_o shall_v have_v no_o long_o relation_n to_o nor_o desire_v of_o wife_n child_n friend_n or_o any_o not_o the_o live_n because_o it_o yet_o touch_v they_o not_o not_o the_o dead_a because_o they_o be_v not_o vi_o and_o 61._o as_o the_o assurance_n of_o this_o that_o death_n nothing_o concern_v we_o do_v exempt_v we_o from_o the_o great_a of_o terror_n so_o also_o do_v it_o make_v we_o to_o enjoy_v life_n to_o the_o most_o advantage_n of_o pleasure_n not_o by_o add_v thereunto_o any_o thing_n of_o uncertain_a time_n but_o by_o detract_n all_o desire_n of_o immortality_n for_o in_o life_n there_o can_v be_v nothing_o of_o evil_a to_o he_o who_o do_v perfect_o understand_v that_o there_o can_v be_v nothing_o of_o evil_n in_o the_o privation_n of_o life_n vii_o again_o he_o can_v be_v excuse_v of_o folly_n who_o say_v that_o he_o fear_v death_n not_o because_o of_o any_o trouble_n or_o anguish_n that_o it_o can_v bring_v when_o it_o come_v but_o because_o of_o the_o perpetual_a grief_n and_o horror_n wherewith_o it_o afflict_v the_o mind_n till_o it_o come_v or_o while_o it_o be_v expect_v forasmuch_o as_o that_o which_o can_v bring_v no_o trouble_n or_o anguish_n with_o it_o when_o it_o come_v ought_v not_o to_o make_v we_o sad_a before_o it_o come_v certain_o if_o therebe_n any_o thing_n of_o incommodity_n or_o fear_v in_o the_o business_n of_o death_n it_o be_v the_o fault_n of_o he_o that_o be_v die_v not_o of_o death_n itself_o nor_o be_v there_o any_o trouble_n in_o death_n more_o than_o there_o be_v after_o it_o and_o it_o be_v no_o less_o folly_n to_o fear_v death_n than_o to_o fear_v old_a age_n since_o as_o old_a age_n follow_v close_o upon_o the_o heel_n hour_n all_o man_n live_v as_o it_o be_v in_o a_o city_n without_o wall_n without_o gate_n to_o keep_v out_o that_o common_a enemy_n xi_o moreover_o a_o young_a man_n may_v die_v happy_a who_o consider_v with_o himself_o that_o shall_v he_o live_v a_o thousand_o year_n yet_o he_o can_v but_o see_v and_o act_v over_o the_o same_o thing_n again_o and_o a_o old_a man_n may_v live_v unhappy_a who_o like_o a_o vessel_n full_a of_o hole_n receive_v the_o good_n of_o life_n only_o to_o let_v they_o run_v through_o he_o 1._o and_o so_o be_v never_o full_a of_o they_o nor_o as_o a_o sober_a ridiculous_a be_v he_o who_o say_v it_o be_v good_a either_o not_o to_o be_v bear_v at_o all_o or_o to_o die_v as_o soon_o as_o bear_v for_o if_o he_o speak_v this_o in_o earnest_n why_o do_v he_o life_n unquiet_a by_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n or_o out_o of_o a_o weariness_n of_o life_n to_o fly_v to_o the_o sanctuary_n of_o death_n when_o his_o own_o imprudence_n and_o irregular_a course_n little_a vain_a opinion_n usher_v in_o desire_n always_o engage_v the_o mind_n to_o think_v of_o something_o which_o it_o do_v not_o possess_v and_o as_o if_o it_o be_v real_o needful_a convert_v and_o fix_v the_o desire_n whole_o and_o entire_o upon_o it_o whence_o it_o come_v that_o to_o he_o who_o be_v not_o satisfy_v with_o a_o little_a nothing_o can_v ever_o be_v enough_o but_o still_o the_o more_o wealth_n he_o possess_v the_o more_o he_o conceive_v himself_o to_o want_v viii_o wherefore_o see_v there_o can_v never_o be_v want_n of_o a_o little_a the_o wise_a man_n doubtless_o infinity_n ix_o have_v you_o then_o a_o design_n to_o make_v any_o one_o rich_a indeed_o know_v that_o the_o way_n be_v not_o by_o add_v to_o his_o riches_n but_o by_o detract_n from_o his_o desire_n
