more_o than_o of_o other_o that_o the_o enjoy_n of_o such_o content_n will_v prove_v exceed_o mischievous_a and_o do_v he_o a_o hundred_o time_n more_o harm_n than_o the_o content_a thereof_o can_v be_v worth_a unto_o he_o be_v we_o therefore_o as_o wary_a and_o cautelous_a for_o our_o spiritual_a health_n as_o for_o our_o natural_a let_v we_o set_v bound_n to_o ourselves_o even_o in_o the_o use_n of_o our_o lawful_a liberty_n in_o thing_n indifferent_a and_o not_o please_v our_o sense_n and_o fancy_n to_o the_o wound_a and_o hurt_v of_o our_o soul_n now_o brethren_n these_o be_v the_o most_o needful_a direction_n for_o the_o overmaster_v of_o the_o evil_n of_o our_o inward_a man_n which_o i_o think_v fit_a to_o commend_v unto_o you_o he_o that_o will_v follow_v they_o shall_v dangerous_a our-strayings_a and_o shall_v far_o less_o frequent_o and_o less_o violent_o be_v foil_v of_o his_o spiritual_a enemy_n then_o without_o they_o it_o will_v prove_v or_o seem_v possible_a yea_o in_o thus_o prune_v himself_o he_o shall_v save_v the_o husbandman_n a_o labour_n of_o prune_v and_o keep_v himself_o at_o ease_n from_o many_o burdensome_a cross_n that_o must_v needs_o come_v upon_o he_o otherwise_o consider_v therefore_o of_o thy_o own_o infirmity_n consider_v that_o thou_o be_v in_o part_n alone_o sanctify_v consider_v that_o sin_n be_v not_o quite_o and_o clean_o take_v from_o thy_o soul_n but_o alone_o depose_v from_o that_o tyrannical_a dominion_n which_o once_o it_o do_v exercise_n over_o thy_o soul_n consider_v that_o satan_n watch_v all_o advantage_n to_o against_o thy_o imperfection_n which_o if_o thou_o will_v not_o be_v persuade_v to_o do_v know_v that_o thou_o shall_v even_o enforce_v the_o lord_n to_o compel_v thou_o as_o it_o be_v by_o foul_a mean_n to_o the_o do_v of_o that_o without_o which_o he_o do_v well_o know_v that_o thou_o can_v not_o be_v safe_a namely_o of_o fight_v against_o the_o fleshly_a lust_n that_o fight_v against_o thy_o soul_n chap._n x._o contain_v the_o four_o and_o last_o use_n of_o the_o point_n viz._n a_o consolation_n to_o the_o people_n of_o god_n against_o their_o unallowed_a fin_n but_o moreover_o use_v 4_o this_o point_n we_o have_v speak_v of_o disallow_v comfort_n to_o god_n people_n against_o the_o sin_n which_o they_o feel_v and_o disallow_v though_o it_o seem_v at_o first_o hear_v to_o be_v altogether_o uncomfortable_a do_v yet_o afford_v a_o sure_a and_o needful_a comfort_n unto_o the_o servant_n of_o god_n that_o have_v wisdom_n to_o apply_v it_o the_o right_a way_n for_o why_o it_o follow_v hence_o necessary_o that_o the_o branch_n in_o this_o vine_n shall_v not_o be_v appall_v nor_o out_o of_o heart_n because_o they_o be_v continual_o trouble_v with_o the_o feel_n of_o many_o thing_n amiss_o which_o it_o be_v far_o more_o desirable_a to_o have_v lop_v off_o then_o continue_v upon_o they_o here_o be_v cause_n not_o of_o not_o be_v humble_v but_o of_o not_o be_v discourage_v in_o the_o senfe_fw-mi and_o feeling_n of_o our_o manifold_a corruption_n for_o it_o be_v sure_a a_o man_n may_v be_v a_o line_n and_o a_o fruitful_a branch_n and_o yet_o stand_v in_o great_a need_n of_o much_o prune_n it_o do_v often_o arise_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o true_a of_o god_n people_n as_o a_o argument_n against_o their_o truth_n that_o they_o have_v so_o many_o sin_n still_o stir_v in_o they_o and_o that_o they_o do_v daily_o transgress_v so_o many_o way_n and_o oftentimes_o in_o very_o high_a degree_n and_o gross_a kind_n now_o if_o we_o have_v well_o consult_v with_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n that_o live_v in_o former_a time_n and_o of_o who_o life_n the_o holy_a scripture_n do_v give_v we_o a_o map_n or_o abridgement_n we_o shall_v easy_o perceive_v that_o there_o be_v no_o force_n at_o all_o in_o this_o argument_n unless_o in_o so_o speak_v we_o will_v offend_v against_o the_o generation_n of_o god_n child_n as_o the_o psalmist_n speak_v in_o another_o case_n for_o what_o reason_n be_v strong_a and_o good_a against_o i_o or_o any_o of_o you_o that_o now_o live_v the_o same_o have_v be_v also_o firm_a and_o strong_a against_o many_o of_o those_o that_o be_v member_n of_o the_o church_n in_o former_a time_n and_o if_o the_o scripture_n do_v assure_v we_o of_o their_o be_v dear_o belove_v of_o god_n and_o sure_o ingraff_v into_o christ_n even_o at_o the_o self_n same_o time_n when_o they_o do_v complain_v of_o like_a corruption_n to_o those_o that_o we_o now_o do_v complain_v of_o then_o we_o may_v safe_o collect_v hence_o that_o we_o also_o be_v in_o christ_n and_o in_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n notwithstanding_o that_o we_o can_v deny_v ourselves_o to_o be_v pollute_v with_o such_o evil_n wherefore_o if_o you_o will_v true_o conclude_v of_o yourselves_o in_o this_o behalse_a whether_o you_o be_v or_o be_v not_o in_o christ_n you_o must_v not_o look_v so_o much_o only_o to_o what_o corruption_n you_o have_v as_o to_o what_o you_o allow_v for_o true_a grace_n may_v stand_v with_o the_o have_v of_o many_o but_o not_o with_o the_o allow_v of_o any_o he_o that_o excuse_v extenuate_v make_v light_n of_o any_o sin_n at_o all_o and_o think_v overcome_v of_o tentation_n to_o commit_v the_o same_o sin_n again_o and_o again_o let_v not_o the_o devil_n abuse_v any_o of_o you_o to_o make_v he_o less_o careful_a of_o lament_v and_o oppose_v as_o beseem_v a_o good_a husband_n he_o cut_v it_o off_o that_o be_v to_o say_v he_o do_v by_o little_a and_o little_o separate_v he_o from_o jesus_n christ_n and_o from_o the_o benefit_n of_o and_o overgrow_a twist_n leaf_n or_o the_o like_a as_o do_v no_o way_n benefit_v the_o branch_n but_o hurt_v it_o rather_o in_o cause_v the_o fruit_n thereof_o to_o be_v lesser_a and_o scant_a than_o it_o may_v be_v the_o thing_n signify_v hereby_o be_v the_o subdue_a of_o the_o corruption_n of_o god_n servant_n viz._n their_o pride_n passion_n self-love_n earthly-mindednesse_a voluptuousness_n and_o the_o like_a disorder_n which_o if_o they_o be_v not_o mortify_v they_o will_v run_v all_o out_o into_o a_o fair_a show_n of_o profession_n not_o at_o all_o fructify_a in_o a_o holy_a conversation_n but_o when_o these_o corruption_n be_v take_v away_o by_o diverse_a needful_a mean_n as_o the_o lord_n himself_o know_v the_o fit_a mean_n for_o he_o be_v but_o a_o ill_a vine-dresser_n that_o want_v his_o prune_a instrument_n then_o be_v that_o end_n obtain_v which_o god_n intend_v and_o then_o follow_v that_o effect_n wherein_o themselves_o rejoice_v viz._n they_o bring_v forth_o more_o fruit_n they_o become_v more_o rich_a in_o the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n more_o plentiful_a in_o all_o godliness_n and_o righteousness_n and_o in_o all_o excellent_a service_n to_o god_n and_o man_n they_o do_v more_o good_a they_o live_v more_o profitable_o and_o seruiceable_o and_o be_v every_o way_n more_o abundant_a in_o all_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n joy_n peace_n love_n righteousness_n temperance_n meekness_n goodness_n and_o the_o rest_n than_o ever_o else_o they_o will_v have_v be_v and_o thus_o
but_o from_o gracious_a acceptation_n of_o they_o in_o that_o blood_n by_o dip_v wherein_o the_o spot_n of_o they_o be_v do_v away_o for_o there_o be_v i_o think_v none_o of_o we_o which_o deny_v but_o that_o god_n accept_v our_o work_n as_o perfect_v in_o christ_n do_v reward_v we_o for_o they_o as_o if_o they_o be_v perfect_a but_o see_v the_o reward_n become_v due_a in_o christ_n and_o not_o by_o the_o work_v themselves_o we_o think_v it_o a_o foolish_a pride_n to_o maintain_v the_o stately_a name_n of_o merit_n of_o work_n when_o we_o be_v fain_o to_o beg_v the_o reward_n for_o another_o sake_n and_o can_v challenge_v it_o simple_o for_o the_o work_v sake_n thus_o this_o truth_n enforce_v they_o after_o much_o turn_n and_o wind_v in_o effect_n to_o confess_v it_o though_o the_o truth_n be_v they_o will_v not_o have_v it_o seem_v so_o for_o fear_v of_o a_o sore_a loss_n that_o may_v follow_v thence_o unto_o their_o clergy_n kitchen_n and_o manger_n i_o mean_v their_o live_n and_o pomp_n but_o let_v they_o pass_v there_o be_v a_o second_o error_n of_o heretic_n puritan_n 2._o of_o perfection_n of_o holiness_n in_o this_o life_n dream_v of_o by_o the_o ancient_a very_o our_o soul_n be_v as_o full_a of_o hotche_n many_o of_o they_o as_o job_n body_n and_o it_o will_v hardly_o be_v better_o with_o many_o of_o we_o so_o long_o as_o we_o abide_v in_o these_o earth_n then_o in_o a_o bed_n of_o down_o and_o every_o man_n will_v be_v of_o salomon_n mind_n and_o count_v the_o day_n of_o death_n better_o than_o the_o day_n of_o birth_n i_o confess_v that_o we_o must_v so_o far_o resign_v our_o will_n to_o god_n will_v as_o with_o all_o contentedness_n of_o mind_n to_o wear_v out_o the_o day_n of_o our_o apprenticeship_n and_o pilgrimage_n for_o so_o long_o as_o god_n have_v any_o service_n for_o we_o to_o do_v any_o where_o though_o the_o place_n and_o company_n be_v full_a of_o troublesomnesse_n yet_o shall_v we_o force_v our_o will_n to_o do_v cumber_n of_o this_o world_n will_v not_o so_o fret_o gall_n we_o if_o we_o do_v dis-sweeten_a the_o one_o with_o make_v ourselves_o to_o taste_v the_o bitterness_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o dis-imbit_a the_o other_o with_o feel_v the_o far_o great_a bitterness_n of_o that_o which_o be_v as_o far_o more_o harmful_a than_o it_o as_o lead_v be_v heavy_a than_o cork_n then_o shall_v we_o prove_v ourselves_o to_o be_v man_n and_o woman_n of_o a_o discern_a spirit_n that_o can_v know_v of_o thing_n what_o be_v good_a what_o be_v bad_a and_o of_o bad_a thing_n what_o be_v more_o what_o be_v less_o bad_a then_o shall_v we_o show_v ourselves_o to_o approach_v near_o that_o height_n of_o grace_n which_o the_o bless_a apostle_n have_v who_o in_o relate_v of_o bond_n imprisonment_n hunger_n thirst_n nakedness_n whip_v stocking_n shipwreck_n and_o daily_o die_v never_o burst_v forth_o into_o lamentation_n but_o rather_o recount_v with_o joy_n that_o which_o be_v so_o painful_a to_o suffer_v and_o seem_v to_o be_v glad_a of_o life_n for_o nothing_o else_o but_o that_o by_o suffer_v more_o of_o those_o trouble_n he_o may_v do_v more_o service_n to_o the_o church_n and_o honour_n to_o christ_n but_o when_o he_o have_v occasion_n to_o declare_v his_o sinfulness_n the_o body_n of_o death_n the_o law_n of_o his_o member_n the_o rebellion_n of_o his_o flesh_n then_o only_o be_v may_v also_o be_v part_v from_o my_o corruption_n and_o never_o more_o hereafter_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o prune_v fast_v and_o prayer_n will_v purge_v the_o word_n and_o sacrament_n will_v cleanse_v and_o all_o god_n ordinance_n and_o all_o our_o christian_a endeavour_n will_v help_v to_o lop_v off_o these_o disorder_a passion_n that_o be_v within_o us._n but_o this_o be_v alone_o a_o cleanse_n in_o part_n a_o pare_n off_o some_o evil_n and_o leave_v much_o behind_o only_o the_o last_o blow_n of_o death_n will_v make_v a_o full_a riddance_n of_o all_o that_o be_v evil_a in_o we_o and_o after_o that_o blow_n give_v there_o shall_v nothing_o remain_v behind_o that_o may_v call_v for_o any_o more_o purge_v this_o be_v the_o sovereign_a medicine_n that_o will_v consummate_v the_o cure_n call_v goodness_n as_o a_o false_a shilling_n be_v call_v a_o shilling_n because_o it_o look_v like_o a_o shilling_n have_v the_o same_o stamp_n and_o a_o little_a silver_n at_o top_n though_o in_o this_o midst_n it_o be_v nothing_o but_o brass_n or_o some_o such_o base_a and_o unworthy_a matter_n if_o a_o man_n i_o say_v be_v move_v for_o his_o own_o credit_n or_o ease_v sake_n yea_o or_o for_o appear_v to_o they_o that_o can_v look_v alone_o upon_o the_o bark_n and_o outer_a rind_n of_o thing_n not_o so_o appear_v to_o the_o pure_a eye_n of_o god_n nor_o so_o account_v in_o his_o true_a judgement_n that_o search_v into_o the_o marrow_n and_o pith_n and_o depth_n of_o all_o thing_n for_o god_n himself_o be_v the_o chief_a good_a and_o in_o a_o manner_n the_o only_a good_a neither_o be_v any_o thing_n good_a but_o by_o participation_n from_o he_o and_o so_o that_o goodness_n which_o be_v not_o as_o it_o be_v derive_v from_o he_o as_o from_o the_o original_n of_o it_o nor_o direct_v to_o he_o as_o to_o the_o scope_n and_o end_n of_o it_o because_o it_o have_v nothing_o to_o do_v with_o he_o therefore_o indeed_o be_v not_o goodness_n whatsoever_o show_v it_o may_v carry_v to_o the_o world_n so_o that_o as_o true_a goodness_n be_v will_n to_o be_v good_a in_o all_o thing_n for_o god_n sake_n so_o be_v false_a goodness_n a_o will_n to_o seem_v good_a in_o some_o thing_n for_o one_o own_o sake_n ease_n may_v move_v a_o man_n to_o do_v some_o good_a and_o avoid_v some_o evil_n so_o may_v credit_v so_o may_v profit_v now_o if_o any_o of_o these_o thing_n do_v chief_o and_o principal_o work_v upon_o our_o will_n as_o the_o motive_n and_o end_n of_o our_o action_n then_o be_v that_o goodness_n but_o hypocrisy_n and_o seem_a goodness_n and_o that_o man_n who_o live_v in_o the_o visible_a church_n suffer_v this_o vice_n of_o be_v induce_v but_o to_o some_o good_a thing_n not_o all_o and_o withdraw_v but_o from_o some_o evil_n not_o all_o for_o his_o own_o credit_n never_o attain_v to_o be_v upright_o but_o this_o be_v a_o false_a suggestion_n of_o satan_n if_o you_o will_v not_o see_v yourselves_o to_o have_v but_o dissemble_v you_o shall_v in_o very_a deed_n never_o be_v better_o but_o rather_o worse_a and_o worse_o and_o more_o and_o more_o sell_v under_o the_o power_n of_o hypocrisy_n true_a only_o by_o confess_v and_o lament_v he_o may_v be_v make_v true_a but_o if_o you_o will_v see_v it_o and_o lament_v it_o before_o god_n and_o oppose_v it_o by_o strive_v to_o cast_v out_o the_o belove_a sin_n and_o to_o step_v that_o one_o step_n which_o hitherto_o you_o have_v not_o step_v of_o fall_v out_o with_o that_o one_o sin_n whatsoever_o which_o hitherto_o you_o have_v harbour_v and_o constant_a pray_v against_o that_o one_o fault_n which_o
