not_o apprehend_v nor_o acknowledge_v that_o that_o birth_n have_v any_o thing_n of_o its_o own_o nature_n more_o than_o the_o birth_n of_o any_o other_o man_n which_o i_o say_v it_o have_v according_a to_o the_o revelation_n of_o god_n give_v i_o concern_v it_o and_o this_o be_v demonstrable_a also_o from_o scripture_n â—_o but_o i_o shall_v soon_o put_v a_o end_n to_o both_o these_o reason_n and_o yet_o also_o speak_v or_o declare_v free_o that_o which_o be_v give_v i_o concern_v the_o same_o and_o in_o plainness_n so_o far_o as_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n can_v admit_v i_o say_v then_o that_o neither_o be_v the_o godhead_n itself_o conceive_v or_o bear_v in_o this_o birth_n nor_o yet_o be_v it_o a_o particle_n or_o portion_n thereof_o for_o i_o confess_v to_o say_v either_o of_o these_o two_o be_v very_o unsound_a and_o be_v altogether_o contrary_a unto_o and_o inconsistent_a with_o the_o dignity_n and_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o as_o for_o the_o godhead_n to_o speak_v proper_o it_o be_v not_o discerpible_a into_o particle_n and_o thus_o i_o have_v plain_o clear_v myself_o of_o the_o least_o ground_n of_o suspicion_n of_o blasphemy_n or_o unsoundness_n as_o to_o the_o nature_n and_o dignity_n of_o the_o godhead_n that_o be_v without_o all_o variableness_n or_o shadow_n of_o change_n and_o now_o to_o that_o question_n viz._n if_o that_o birth_n have_v in_o it_o and_o that_o substantial_o and_o in_o its_o very_a nature_n somewhat_o above_o the_o common_a nature_n of_o man_n what_o can_v it_o be_v but_o the_o godhead_n itself_o i_o answer_v yea_o it_o have_v and_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o the_o godhead_n itself_o but_o a_o certain_a middle_a nature_n substance_n or_o be_v betwixt_o the_o godhead_n and_o mankind_n that_o be_v as_o far_o yea_o and_o much_o far_a transcendent_a in_o glory_n above_o the_o common_a nature_n of_o man_n as_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n be_v above_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o beast_n yea_o it_o be_v even_o above_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o angel_n this_o will_v be_v think_v the_o more_o strange_a of_o by_o many_o because_o they_o have_v be_v common_o teach_v and_o have_v common_o receive_v it_o that_o there_o be_v no_o middle_a substance_n betwixt_o the_o godhead_n and_o we_o at_o least_o as_o to_o the_o inward_a for_o they_o have_v suppose_v that_o the_o spirit_n or_o mind_n of_o a_o man_n or_o a_o angel_n be_v next_o unto_o the_o godhead_n which_o i_o deny_v for_o the_o heavenly_a or_o divine_a substance_n or_o essence_n of_o which_o the_o divine_a birth_n be_v both_o conceive_v in_o mary_n and_o be_v inward_o conceive_v in_o the_o saint_n be_v of_o a_o middle_a nature_n now_o this_o middle_a nature_n i_o call_v a_o divine_a substance_n or_o essence_n not_o as_o if_o it_o be_v the_o godhead_n itself_o or_o a_o particle_n or_o portion_n of_o it_o but_o because_o of_o its_o excellency_n above_o all_o other_o thing_n next_o unto_o the_o godhead_n as_o on_o such_o a_o account_n man_n do_v call_v other_o thing_n divine_a which_o be_v very_o excellent_a yea_o some_o call_v holy_a man_n divine_a and_o some_o call_v these_o who_o teach_v the_o thing_n of_o god_n divine_n as_o john_n who_o write_v the_o revelation_n be_v call_v john_n the_o divine_a also_o this_o excellent_a and_o intermediate_v be_v may_v be_v call_v the_o divine_a be_v on_o such_o a_o account_n as_o because_o the_o godhead_n be_v most_o immediate_o manifest_v therein_o and_o dwell_v in_o it_o as_o in_o the_o most_o holy_a place_n or_o holy_a of_o holies_n for_o thus_o even_o according_a unto_o the_o manner_n of_o man_n we_o common_o say_v such_o a_o place_n in_o the_o outward_a be_v such_o a_o man_n be_v because_o of_o his_o dwell_n or_o abide_v there_o and_o so_o it_o may_v be_v call_v the_o divine_a essence_n or_o be_v for_o that_o god_n do_v dwell_v in_o it_o though_o he_o dwell_v in_o himself_o also_o and_o so_o do_v from_o everlasting_a and_o true_o i_o can_v but_o in_o charity_n construe_v this_o to_o have_v be_v intend_v by_o some_o in_o some_o other_o place_n who_o affirm_v that_o christ_n as_o man_n be_v bear_v of_o the_o divine_a essence_n or_o substance_n for_o so_o say_v i_o according_a to_o the_o foresay_a explanation_n that_o he_o be_v not_o only_o bear_v of_o it_o but_o of_o the_o essence_n or_o substance_n of_o man_n also_o through_o mary_n and_o thus_o he_o be_v both_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o the_o son_n of_o man_n according_a to_o his_o very_a birth_n in_o mary_n and_o therefore_o even_o according_a to_o that_o birth_n he_o have_v a_o divine_a perfection_n and_o virtue_n and_o that_o substantial_a above_o all_o other_o man_n that_o ever_o be_v be_v or_o shall_v be_v who_o be_v the_o heavenly_a man_n by_o virtue_n of_o which_o divine_a perfection_n he_o be_v unite_v with_o god_n in_o a_o immediate_a manner_n and_o replenish_v with_o such_o a_o fullness_n of_o the_o godhead_n as_o no_o other_o man_n or_o man_n be_v capable_a of_o yea_o by_o virtue_n thereof_o the_o fullness_n dwell_v in_o he_o bodily_a as_o the_o scripture_n declare_v and_o this_o divine_a and_o supereminent_a perfection_n of_o this_o birth_n above_o the_o common_a nature_n of_o man_n yea_o of_o angel_n be_v that_o wonderful_a nexus_fw-la tie_n or_o bond_n betwixt_o god_n and_o he_o through_o which_o he_o have_v immediate_a union_n with_o he_o yea_o it_o be_v and_o may_v be_v call_v the_o union_n viz._n that_o by_o which_o god_n and_o man_n be_v make_v one_o and_o such_o and_o union_n as_o no_o other_o creature_n have_v or_o ever_o shall_v have_v for_o that_o the_o union_n of_o god_n with_o all_o other_o creature_n be_v but_o mediate_v whereas_o this_o be_v immediate_a wherefore_o he_o and_o he_o alone_o ought_v to_o be_v call_v jesus_n christ_n both_o god_n and_o man_n and_o no_o other_o and_o by_o this_o divine_a perfection_n he_o carry_v the_o image_n of_o god_n in_o his_o very_a outward_a birth_n as_o also_o he_o carry_v in_o the_o same_o the_o true_a nature_n and_o image_n of_o man_n through_o his_o partake_n of_o marys_n substance_n and_o thus_o he_o have_v our_o whole_a and_o perfect_a true_a nature_n as_o man_n be_v like_o we_o in_o all_o thing_n without_o sin_n in_o soul_n and_o body_n so_o he_o have_v also_o somewhat_o even_o as_o to_o his_o soul_n and_o body_n much_o more_o excellent_a than_o all_o other_o man_n and_o that_o substanstial_o so_o that_o his_o body_n have_v not_o only_o the_o perfection_n of_o our_o body_n but_o also_o much_o more_o because_o of_o its_o be_v generate_v not_o only_o of_o the_o seed_n of_o mary_n but_o of_o a_o divine_a seed_n and_o his_o soul_n have_v all_o the_o perfection_n and_o property_n which_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n in_o innocency_n have_v but_o it_o have_v also_o much_o more_o excellent_a property_n and_o perfection_n and_o that_o substantial_o and_o therefore_o his_o body_n though_o it_o can_v suffer_v death_n yet_o it_o can_v not_o suffer_v corruption_n and_o his_o soul_n can_v not_o sin_n nor_o be_v corrupt_v with_o iniquity_n but_o do_v ever_o suffer_v under_o it_o and_o by_o it_o which_o soul_n of_o christ_n be_v the_o quicken_a spirit_n as_o paul_n have_v declare_v 1_o cor._n 15._o now_o because_o of_o the_o wonderful_a and_o divine_a excellency_n and_o perfection_n of_o this_o birth_n therefore_o it_o be_v ordain_v and_o appoint_v of_o god_n to_o be_v that_o universal_a balsam_n or_o medicine_n to_o cure_v and_o restore_v not_o only_o all_o these_o of_o mankind_n in_o soul_n and_o body_n who_o shall_v receive_v he_o inward_o by_o faith_n and_o love_n but_o also_o to_o cure_v and_o restore_v the_o whole_a outward_a creation_n from_o its_o distemper_n and_o corruption_n that_o be_v come_v upon_o it_o through_o sin_n yea_o this_o be_v the_o little_a leaven_n that_o shall_v leaven_n the_o whole_a lump_n of_o this_o visible_a creation_n by_o its_o pure_a heavenly_a and_o divine_a virtue_n into_o most_o wonderful_a sweetness_n purity_n virtue_n beauty_n and_o glory_n whereby_o all_o thing_n shall_v be_v make_v new_a and_o that_o which_o be_v but_o natural_a shall_v be_v as_o it_o be_v spiritual_a yea_o this_o be_v indeed_o that_o stone_n of_o the_o wiseman_n which_o by_o its_o touch_n shall_v in_o due_a time_n change_v not_o only_o the_o body_n of_o the_o saint_n but_o the_o body_n of_o the_o whole_a creation_n and_o purge_v it_o from_o all_o its_o weakness_n and_o impurity_n and_o true_o another_o philosopher_n stone_n even_o in_o the_o outward_a at_o least_o to_o that_o latitude_n as_o it_o be_v common_o define_v shall_v man_n never_o find_v but_o this_o even_o this_o holy_a and_o divine_a body_n and_o birth_n which_o now_o 1669_o year_n ago_o be_v bring_v forth_o through_o the_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o and_o by_o the_o virgin_n mary_n for_o what_o can_v
the_o other_o part_n may_v be_v of_o the_o enemy_n yea_o the_o soul_n may_v begin_v to_o do_v something_o well_o and_o in_o the_o spirit_n and_o yet_o end_v it_o in_o the_o flesh_n through_o its_o weakness_n and_o inadvertency_n nevertheless_o we_o must_v not_o conceive_v any_o such_o mixture_n possible_a as_o if_o what_o the_o lord_n do_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o what_o the_o soul_n do_v with_o he_o and_o by_o his_o power_n and_o spirit_n can_v be_v corrupt_v and_o defile_v by_o the_o enemy_n nay_o for_o the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v still_o pure_a so_o far_o as_o it_o go_v but_o now_o the_o soul_n give_v way_n to_o the_o enemy_n he_o enter_v and_o so_o put_v a_o stop_n to_o the_o lord_n work_n at_o that_o time_n but_o he_o can_v never_o defile_v or_o corrupt_v it_o and_o thus_o the_o lord_n part_n of_o the_o work_n be_v still_o his_o and_o the_o enemy_n have_v no_o share_n in_o it_o nor_o any_o influence_n upon_o it_o so_o as_o to_o defile_v it_o but_o he_o may_v stop_v it_o as_o the_o lord_n permit_v he_o and_o as_o the_o soul_n give_v he_o way_n so_o to_o do_v now_o one_o may_v ready_o object_n according_a to_o this_o it_o will_v seem_v that_o so_o long_o as_o sin_n have_v any_o life_n or_o power_n in_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v as_o be_v say_v the_o devil_n kingdom_n it_o be_v impossible_a for_o it_o to_o do_v any_o work_n unto_o the_o lord_n and_o in_o he_o from_o fiâ—st_n to_o last_o but_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v mar_v and_o stand_v in_o the_o mixture_n as_o aforesaid_a for_o the_o very_a state_n and_o condition_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v in_o the_o mixture_n as_o partly_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o its_o power_n have_v place_n therein_o and_o partly_o the_o unholy_a life_n and_o its_o power_n how_o can_v it_o be_v but_o that_o the_o work_n itself_o shall_v stand_v in_o the_o mixture_n also_o and_o that_o proportional_o according_a to_o the_o mixture_n of_o the_o soul_n own_o state_n and_o condition_n for_o while_o the_o soul_n be_v work_v that_o which_o be_v good_a by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n in_o and_o with_o the_o lord_n will_v the_o power_n of_o the_o unholy_a life_n be_v idle_a and_o asleep_a or_o rather_o will_v they_o not_o work_v in_o opposition_n yea_o will_v not_o the_o devil_n move_v strong_o in_o they_o to_o resist_v and_o mar_v the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n answ._n this_o objection_n indeed_o do_v evince_n that_o the_o thing_n be_v somewhat_o difficult_a but_o not_o impossible_a it_o be_v true_a the_o power_n of_o the_o unholy_a life_n do_v of_o their_o own_o nature_n incline_v to_o work_v in_o opposition_n to_o the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o satan_n will_v never_o be_v want_v as_o much_o as_o he_o can_v to_o move_v and_o stir_v they_o up_o but_o this_o answer_n it_o plain_o that_o as_o the_o soul_n turn_v unto_o the_o lord_n and_o breath_n unto_o he_o through_o the_o power_n of_o his_o own_o life_n and_o spirit_n for_o preservation_n and_o continue_v thus_o inward_o turn_v and_o convert_v unto_o he_o in_o fear_n watchfulness_n and_o singleness_n the_o power_n of_o the_o lord_n god_n come_v over_o the_o unholy_a life_n and_o its_o power_n yea_o and_o over_o the_o whole_a power_n of_o the_o enemy_n therein_o and_o do_v bind_v and_o captivate_v they_o that_o they_o can_v no_o more_o prevail_v to_o hinder_v the_o soul_n from_o do_v the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o purity_n and_o perfection_n in_o a_o measure_n then_o if_o they_o have_v no_o such_o place_n in_o it_o even_o as_o in_o the_o outward_a if_o i_o be_v do_v a_o piece_n of_o work_n and_o some_o strong_a body_a man_n have_v a_o resolution_n to_o stop_v or_o mar_v i_o yet_o if_o a_o strong_a than_o he_o come_v and_o bind_v he_o up_o i_o may_v do_v the_o work_v complete_o maugre_o he_o he_o may_v fret_v and_o make_v a_o noise_n like_o a_o mad_a dog_n or_o lion_n upon_o a_o chain_n but_o he_o can_v do_v no_o more_o and_o true_o we_o have_v find_v the_o truth_n of_o this_o many_o time_n in_o our_o own_o experience_n that_o as_o we_o have_v keep_v diligent_a nigh_o unto_o the_o lord_n with_o our_o mind_n towards_o he_o in_o tender_a breathe_n and_o desire_n that_o we_o may_v be_v preserve_v we_o have_v find_v he_o chain_v as_o aforesaid_a but_o when_o we_o have_v but_o a_o little_a become_v remiss_a and_o suffer_v our_o mind_n to_o slide_v back_o from_o that_o diligence_n and_o watchfulness_n as_o be_v requisite_a than_o the_o lord_n suffer_v the_o enemy_n somewhat_o as_o it_o be_v to_o break_v loose_a upon_o we_o and_o use_v his_o strength_n in_o some_o measure_n against_o we_o to_o the_o end_n that_o thereby_o we_o may_v be_v stir_v up_o unto_o the_o more_o watchfulness_n and_o indeed_o many_o time_n we_o find_v it_o so_o with_o we_o in_o this_o matter_n as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o jew_n at_o the_o rebuild_n of_o the_o city_n who_o be_v so_o put_v to_o it_o that_o while_o they_o build_v with_o the_o one_o hand_n they_o behoove_v to_o fight_v against_o the_o adversary_n with_o the_o other_o thus_o you_o may_v see_v that_o there_o be_v a_o time_n wherein_o sin_n and_o its_o power_n may_v be_v captivate_v before_o it_o be_v utter_o slay_v and_o the_o strong_a man_n may_v be_v bind_v before_o he_o be_v utter_o cast_v out_o chap._n ix_o show_v how_o that_o though_o work_n can_v have_v no_o great_a influence_n upon_o the_o very_a first_o beginning_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n that_o be_v only_o receive_v through_o a_o receptive_a faith_n yet_o they_o do_v great_o conduce_v unto_o the_o growth_n and_o continuance_n thereof_o also_o unto_o the_o kill_n and_o mortification_n of_o the_o sinful_a and_o unholy_a life_n with_o its_o power_n more_o and_o more_o till_o it_o be_v utter_o slay_v where_o also_o the_o distinction_n of_o a_o twofold_a property_n of_o faith_n viz._n receptive_a and_o operative_a be_v somewhat_o open_v work_v out_o your_o salvation_n say_v the_o apostle_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a it_o be_v observable_a he_o do_v not_o bid_v they_o begin_v their_o salvation_n with_o work_n but_o that_o they_o shall_v work_v it_o out_o or_o proceed_v in_o it_o through_o work_n which_o be_v a_o manifest_a proof_n that_o work_n have_v a_o great_a use_n and_o service_n promote_a and_o carry_v on_o the_o salvation_n of_o the_o soul_n though_o they_o can_v begin_v it_o and_o concern_v the_o great_a use_n they_o have_v unto_o this_o effect_n paul_n the_o same_o apostle_n say_v again_o rom._n 8._o if_o you_o live_v after_o the_o flâ—sh_n you_o shall_v die_v but_o if_o you_o through_o the_o spirit_n do_v mortify_v the_o deed_n of_o the_o body_n you_o shall_v live_v wherein_o these_o two_o thing_n be_v plain_o imply_v 1._o that_o carnal_a and_o evil_a work_n that_o be_v a_o live_n after_o the_o flesh_n occasion_n death_n upon_o they_o who_o be_v come_v to_o some_o measure_n of_o spiritual_a life_n evil_a and_o unholy_a work_n be_v deadn_v and_o kill_v they_o be_v like_o a_o canker_n which_o eat_v out_o the_o life_n of_o the_o soul_n 2._o that_o good_a and_o holy_a work_n serve_v not_o only_o to_o preserve_v the_o measure_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n already_o attain_v but_o to_o increase_v and_o improve_v it_o and_o this_o same_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o talent_n do_v plain_o hold_v forth_o for_o he_o who_o receive_v but_o two_o talent_n yet_o improve_n the_o same_o and_o put_v they_o to_o use_v they_o become_v multiply_v into_o four_o so_o he_o who_o receive_v the_o five_o by_o use_v they_o gain_v other_o five_o many_o other_o scripture_n exaâ—mples_n can_v be_v bring_v to_o prove_v the_o trâ—â—â—_n of_o it_o but_o these_o shall_v at_o present_a suffice_v moreover_o the_o very_a nature_n of_o the_o thing_n do_v also_o demonstrate_v it_o for_o it_o be_v here_o the_o same_o as_o to_o the_o spiritual_a life_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o natural_a for_o the_o natural_a life_n and_o the_o power_n thereof_o become_v strong_a and_o strong_a the_o more_o it_o be_v upon_o motion_n and_o exercise_n as_o we_o see_v by_o daily_a experience_n but_o there_o be_v this_o difference_n that_o the_o natural_a life_n after_o it_o have_v come_v to_o its_o height_n do_v decay_n and_o even_o spend_v or_o consume_v itself_o in_o its_o motion_n or_o work_n for_o it_o be_v but_o a_o temporary_a thing_n whereas_o the_o spiritual_a life_n be_v eternal_a and_o do_v never_o at_o any_o time_n decay_n or_o diminish_v through_o its_o work_n but_o be_v thereby_o perpetuate_v it_o be_v such_o a_o good_a plant_n that_o it_o ever_o grow_v and_o flourish_v and_o bring_v forth_o twelve_o manner_n of_o fruit_n every_o month_n where_o it_o be_v well_o occupy_v or_o improve_v and_o never_o of_o its_o own_o nature_n decay_v or_o wax_v barren_a
suffer_v death_n for_o sin_n give_v we_o a_o most_o convince_a example_n that_o we_o shall_v die_v unto_o it_o and_o suffer_v it_o no_o more_o to_o live_v in_o we_o now_o it_o be_v to_o be_v observe_v and_o remember_v that_o in_o all_o these_o step_n the_o suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n etc._n etc._n have_v these_o influence_n upon_o we_o not_o as_o they_o be_v present_v unto_o we_o bare_o in_o our_o own_o spirit_n or_o as_o we_o do_v bring_v they_o to_o our_o remembrance_n thereby_o and_o so_o make_v a_o work_n upon_o ourselves_o in_o our_o own_o thought_n and_o motion_n for_o in_o so_o do_v we_o shall_v never_o profit_v our_o own_o soul_n either_o in_o die_v unto_o sin_n or_o live_v in_o holiness_n unto_o god_n indeed_o we_o may_v thereby_o raise_v spark_n of_o our_o own_o kindle_v in_o the_o affectionate_a part_n and_o work_v some_o effect_n in_o our_o heart_n which_o may_v be_v a_o shadow_n or_o likeness_n of_o these_o thing_n but_o can_v never_o be_v the_o thing_n themselves_o but_o as_o they_o be_v inward_o present_v to_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o light_n life_n and_o spirit_n of_o christ_n jesus_n and_o apply_v thereby_o and_o that_o instant_o and_o continual_o for_o it_o be_v his_o light_n life_n and_o spirit_n alone_o which_o both_o give_v the_o true_a understanding_n of_o the_o use_n and_o end_v of_o these_o thing_n and_o also_o give_v unto_o the_o soul_n the_o live_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o they_o and_o in_o a_o live_n and_o effectual_a way_n do_v only_o and_o can_v apply_v they_o unto_o the_o soul_n and_o whole_a power_n thereof_o for_o the_o work_v such_o suitable_a effect_n and_o impression_n as_o be_v proper_a thereunto_o but_o some_o may_v say_v see_v the_o outward_a come_v suffering_n and_o death_n etc._n etc._n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n as_o it_o be_v know_v and_o improve_v by_o the_o soul_n be_v so_o effectual_a to_o work_v faith_n and_o love_n in_o it_o towards_o god_n and_o for_o its_o mortification_n unto_o sin_n and_o live_n in_o holiness_n unto_o god_n will_v it_o not_o therefore_o seem_v that_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o outward_a come_v suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n as_o aforesaid_a be_v of_o absolute_a necessity_n unto_o every_o one_o for_o the_o attainment_n of_o these_o thing_n for_o how_o can_v a_o soul_n believe_v that_o god_n will_v be_v gracious_a unto_o it_o or_o be_v reconcileable_a with_o it_o but_o as_o it_o look_v upon_o that_o testimony_n of_o his_o mercy_n and_o love_n in_o send_v his_o belove_a son_n outward_o into_o the_o world_n to_o suffer_v and_o die_v for_o our_o sin_n in_o order_n unto_o our_o reconciliation_n and_o peace_n with_o god_n also_o how_o can_v it_o love_n god_n with_o that_o purity_n and_o fervency_n of_o love_n which_o be_v according_a to_o the_o gospel_n but_o as_o it_o regard_v and_o consider_v that_o testimony_n of_o his_o love_n in_o the_o come_v suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o outward_a answ_n indeed_o the_o knowledge_n of_o this_o outward_a come_v suffering_n and_o death_n be_v of_o very_a bless_a use_n and_o advantage_n and_o all_o who_o have_v it_o shall_v be_v very_o thankful_a unto_o inward_a feel_n and_o good_a experience_n his_o do_n and_o suffering_n in_o we_o by_o be_v make_v conformable_a thereunto_o in_o which_o holy_a seed_n as_o it_o arise_v in_o we_o such_o a_o clear_a heart_n and_o yet_o they_o can_v never_o know_v the_o same_o but_o in_o this_o and_o oh_o at_o what_o great_a pain_n have_v many_o poor_a soul_n be_v to_o imitate_v christ_n in_o his_o heavenly_a virtue_n by_o set_v he_o as_o their_o example_n before_o he_o but_o mere_o as_o the_o letter_n or_o history_n declare_v of_o he_o by_o which_o way_n yet_o they_o can_v never_o attain_v unto_o the_o to_o turn_v in_o their_o mind_n unto_o it_o which_o they_o call_v introversion_n yet_o they_o deny_v that_o man_n be_v to_o do_v this_o at_o first_o as_o while_o they_o be_v pollute_v in_o their_o gross_a abomination_n and_o lust_n to_o turn_v in_o unto_o the_o divine_a presence_n they_o judge_v a_o thing_n both_o presumptuous_a and_o vain_a presumptuous_a because_o it_o be_v altogether_o unsuitable_a and_o unbecoming_a that_o a_o soul_n pollute_v in_o its_o gross_a abomination_n and_o lust_n shall_v approach_v and_o draw_v near_o unto_o god_n and_o vain_a because_o though_o they_o holy_a seed_n appear_v so_o far_o as_o way_n be_v make_v for_o they_o through_o the_o purification_n or_o mortification_n aforesaid_a and_o some_o real_a and_o true_a beginning_n not_o only_o of_o some_o but_o of_o all_o christian_a virtue_n will_v appear_v such_o as_o of_o love_n joy_n peace_n gentleness_n meekness_n patience_n temperance_n etc._n etc._n and_o other_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n for_o even_o as_o it_o be_v frequent_o in_o natural_a operation_n so_o in_o this_o spiritual_a it_o be_v also_o that_o after_o the_o destruction_n of_o one_o thing_n immediate_o follow_v the_o generation_n of_o another_o life_n hasten_v as_o swift_o after_o death_n as_o possible_o as_o can_v be_v conceive_v so_o that_o no_o distance_n or_o space_n of_o time_n be_v admit_v betwixt_o they_o thus_o i_o have_v brief_o point_v at_o divers_a good_a and_o precious_a effect_n which_o do_v follow_v upon_o the_o soul_n convert_v unto_o the_o divine_a presence_n and_o the_o light_n and_o power_n thereof_o in_o the_o holy_a seed_n and_o upon_o its_o continue_n or_o abide_v therein_o if_o there_o be_v any_o other_o not_o express_o mention_v they_o may_v be_v reduce_v unto_o they_o or_o and_o ass_n can_v move_v upon_o four_o and_o run_v with_o a_o good_a pace_n yet_o they_o can_v fly_v as_o the_o fowl_n of_o the_o air_n neither_o can_v the_o fish_n move_v upon_o dry_a land_n and_o we_o will_v judge_v it_o a_o most_o unnatural_a and_o ridiculous_a thing_n to_o observe_v a_o horse_n essay_v to_o mount_v up_o into_o the_o air_n and_o fly_v like_o a_o fowl_n or_o a_o fish_n to_o move_v on_o dry_a land_n the_o reason_n of_o all_o which_o be_v because_o these_o motion_n be_v of_o different_a kind_n and_o proceed_v from_o different_a power_n of_o the_o sensual_a life_n and_o require_v different_a organ_n for_o their_o perform_n as_o the_o fowl_n its_o wing_n the_o fish_n its_o fin_n or_o scale_n etc._n etc._n beast_n their_o four_o foot_n or_o leg_n furthermore_o a_o beast_n can_v perform_v the_o natural_a operation_n of_o man_n even_o as_o a_o natural_a man_n such_o as_o to_o build_v plant_v write_v speak_v discourse_n for_o these_o be_v the_o operation_n proceed_v from_o the_o reasonable_a power_n which_o beast_n want_v now_o as_o to_o the_o other_o part_n to_o clear_v it_o also_o by_o example_n suppose_v i_o have_v the_o locomotive_a power_n and_o organ_n yet_o if_o there_o be_v such_o strong_a impediment_n as_o do_v universal_o hinder_v either_o the_o one_o or_o the_o other_o i_o can_v move_v as_o if_o the_o body_n be_v in_o some_o lethargy_n or_o swarf_n or_o universal_a gout_n which_o stop_v the_o power_n of_o motion_n or_o if_o the_o power_n be_v free_a yet_o if_o some_o external_a impediment_n be_v on_o the_o organ_n as_o the_o hand_n dead_a and_o artificial_a so_o it_o be_v as_o to_o the_o motion_n and_o work_n of_o the_o saint_n and_o those_o who_o be_v not_o saint_n the_o saint_n work_n and_o motion_n be_v live_v and_o do_v savour_n of_o that_o holy_a and_o precious_a life_n which_o produce_v they_o but_o the_o motion_n and_o work_n of_o the_o unholy_a and_o unrenewed_a be_v dead_a have_v no_o savour_n nor_o virtue_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n in_o they_o every_o man_n act_v according_a to_o that_o principle_n and_o power_n of_o life_n with_o which_o he_o be_v endue_v â—o_o the_o holy_a man_n act_v from_o the_o as_o it_o abide_v in_o its_o conversion_n thereunto_o even_o as_o the_o needle_n by_o its_o be_v touch_v by_o the_o loadstone_n and_o be_v for_o some_o time_n apply_v thereunto_o drink_v in_o a_o it_o to_o move_v true_o in_o any_o holy_a action_n though_o we_o can_v suppose_v it_o otherwise_o to_o have_v both_o the_o power_n and_o organ_n requisite_a thereunto_o there_o be_v a_o body_n of_o sin_n and_o death_n with_o many_o member_n which_o hang_v upon_o it_o and_o cover_v it_o all_o over_o and_o lie_v so_o heavy_a upon_o it_o even_o as_o so_o many_o talent_n of_o lead_n that_o it_o move_v swift_o and_o vigorous_o in_o unholy_a action_n
unto_o it_o the_o power_n of_o nature_n and_o sin_n so_o strong_o set_v it_o upon_o work_v answ._n indeed_o the_o difficulty_n be_v great_a because_o both_o the_o power_n of_o nature_n and_o sin_n work_v strong_o and_o join_v their_o force_n together_o unto_o act_v and_o do_v and_o beside_o nature_n be_v so_o unacquainted_a with_o such_o a_o thing_n that_o it_o be_v very_o impatient_a of_o it_o therein_o for_o a_o time_n chap._n v._n show_v how_o the_o soul_n after_o its_o conversion_n unto_o god_n and_o continuance_n therein_o in_o passiveness_n and_o forbearance_n for_o some_o small_a time_n become_v a_o partaker_n of_o the_o holy_a and_o divine_a life_n and_o the_o power_n thereof_o in_o some_o measure_n through_o some_o beginning_n of_o a_o spiritual_a death_n and_o regeneration_n by_o which_o it_o attain_v unto_o some_o measure_n of_o union_n with_o god_n and_o christ_n and_o thereby_o be_v put_v in_o some_o capacity_n for_o operative_a exercise_n of_o with_o the_o soul_n in_o natural_a action_n unless_o it_o be_v a_o partaker_n of_o the_o soul_n life_n and_o be_v in_o union_n with_o it_o so_o nor_o can_v the_o soul_n cooperate_v with_o god_n in_o spiritual_a and_o holy_a action_n till_o it_o be_v a_o partaker_n of_o his_o life_n and_o attain_v unto_o some_o union_n with_o he_o now_o i_o have_v show_v above_o that_o the_o soul_n through_o its_o find_v out_o as_o in_o many_o other_o in_o some_o he_o raise_v life_n as_o it_o be_v instant_o in_o other_o he_o take_v a_o long_a time_n to_o do_v it_o in_o other_o yet_o a_o long_a etc._n etc._n for_o he_o be_v the_o unlimited_a holy_a one_o of_o israel_n who_o limit_v we_o but_o will_v not_o nor_o ought_v he_o to_o be_v limit_v by_o we_o and_o though_o he_o may_v raise_v this_o life_n soon_o in_o one_o than_o another_o where_o that_o other_o be_v no_o more_o want_v as_o to_o the_o aforesaid_a step_n than_o his_o neighbour_n yet_o usual_o these_o who_o with_o most_o diligence_n and_o faithfulness_n cleave_v unto_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o appear_v in_o they_o in_o his_o own_o seed_n do_v most_o ready_o and_o speedy_o find_v the_o holy_a life_n raise_v in_o they_o and_o the_o power_n thereof_o sensible_o move_v in_o their_o inward_a part_n now_o i_o find_v it_o with_o i_o yet_o more_o particular_o to_o point_n at_o some_o advertisement_n and_o caution_n in_o relation_n unto_o the_o soul_n apply_v itself_o unto_o work_n and_o operative_a exercise_n after_o it_o have_v attain_v unto_o some_o measure_n of_o life_n and_o power_n whereby_o it_o be_v put_v in_o some_o capacity_n to_o perform_v they_o which_o i_o may_v not_o call_v rule_n and_o prescription_n as_o proceed_v from_o i_o though_o herein_o i_o know_v the_o mind_n and_o counsel_n of_o god_n but_o advertisement_n be_v only_o of_o use_n to_o point_v the_o soul_n inward_o unto_o the_o manifestation_n of_o truth_n in_o the_o springing_n up_o of_o life_n in_o its_o own_o particular_a where_o it_o will_v see_v the_o use_n and_o need_v of_o these_o thing_n more_o than_o what_o it_o can_v hear_v or_o read_v of_o they_o from_o another_o declaration_n and_o true_o they_o be_v such_o thing_n that_o the_o want_n of_o the_o true_a knowledge_n sense_n and_o observation_n of_o they_o have_v be_v a_o grievous_a block_n in_o the_o way_n of_o many_o in_o their_o progress_n in_o holiness_n yea_o have_v hinder_v they_o from_o grow_v up_o to_o any_o considerable_a pitch_n or_o perfection_n in_o holiness_n that_o they_o have_v continue_v as_o weakling_n and_o babe_n therethrough_a whereas_o otherwise_o they_o may_v have_v be_v strong_a man_n in_o christ._n i._o have_v now_o attain_v unto_o a_o measure_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o the_o power_n thereof_o so_o that_o thou_o find_v the_o power_n of_o this_o life_n in_o thy_o heart_n as_o it_o be_v a_o wheel_n within_o a_o wheel_n or_o as_o a_o soul_n within_o a_o soul_n yea_o it_o be_v true_o so_o and_o that_o also_o thou_o find_v thy_o soul_n in_o a_o measure_n of_o pure_a union_n with_o it_o and_o every_o power_n of_o thy_o soul_n affect_v and_o touch_v with_o the_o power_n of_o this_o holy_a life_n in_o pure_a embrace_n every_o one_o as_o it_o be_v kiss_v each_o other_o and_o hereby_o thou_o will_v feel_v thyself_o strong_a in_o some_o measure_n to_o do_v some_o thing_n pertain_v unto_o a_o holy_a life_n yea_o thou_o will_v even_o so_o find_v it_o with_o thou_o as_o if_o thou_o be_v cure_v of_o a_o bodily_a lameness_n or_o as_o if_o thy_o tongue_n be_v loose_v which_o be_v former_o bind_v then_o thou_o be_v to_o stand_v in_o great_a fear_n and_o reverence_n and_o be_v very_o cautious_a that_o thou_o fall_v not_o upon_o do_v any_o thing_n or_o thing_n less_o or_o more_o at_o all_o adventure_n or_o hand_n over_o head_n as_o they_o use_v to_o say_v as_o to_o set_v about_o any_o performance_n in_o thy_o own_o natural_a and_o selfish_a will_n because_o thou_o find_v strength_n in_o thou_o as_o thou_o conceive_v to_o perform_v it_o for_o if_o thou_o so_o do_v thou_o will_v provoke_v the_o lord_n and_o grieve_v that_o holy_a life_n which_o have_v spring_v and_o appear_v in_o thou_o not_o at_o all_o to_o be_v rule_v or_o lead_v into_o any_o action_n by_o thy_o will_n but_o by_o the_o will_n of_o the_o lord_n alone_o and_o if_o thou_o go_v about_o to_o do_v any_o thing_n in_o such_o a_o manner_n though_o thou_o find_v both_o clearness_n and_o strength_n of_o mind_n with_o thou_o at_o first_o yet_o afterward_o thou_o will_v to_o thy_o great_a loss_n feel_v weakness_n and_o confusion_n to_o enter_v thou_o and_o a_o thick_a cloud_n of_o darkness_n will_v come_v betwixt_o the_o eye_n of_o thy_o soul_n and_o that_o pure_a light_n of_o life_n which_o shine_v in_o thou_o yea_o a_o vail_n of_o death_n will_v come_v over_o the_o tender_a life_n in_o some_o measure_n and_o thou_o will_v find_v the_o pure_a life_n in_o thou_o burden_a and_o oppress_v which_o will_v occasion_v pain_n and_o grief_n of_o soul_n unto_o thou_o which_o can_v be_v utter_v and_o of_o these_o thing_n we_o have_v have_v experience_n divers_a time_n so_o that_o have_v not_o the_o lord_n in_o tender_a mercy_n recover_v we_o we_o have_v go_v down_o into_o the_o grave_n after_o some_o measure_n of_o quicken_a the_o reason_n of_o all_o this_o be_v because_o of_o man_n by_o his_o own_o will_n usurp_v and_o presume_v to_o lead_v forth_o the_o holy_a life_n which_o usurpation_n it_o can_v endure_v so_o as_o to_o yield_v or_o consent_v unto_o it_o therefore_o it_o withdraw_v its_o holy_a power_n of_o light_n and_o life_n from_o the_o power_n of_o the_o soul_n concentr_v they_o within_o its_o own_o particular_a be_v and_o thus_o the_o soul_n be_v leave_v in_o darkness_n confusion_n and_o weakness_n and_o the_o tender_a life_n be_v both_o grieve_v and_o burden_a as_o aforesaid_a for_o whatever_o seek_v to_o move_v it_o from_o its_o perfect_a unity_n with_o the_o will_n of_o god_n do_v hurt_v it_o for_o it_o stand_v for_o ever_o incorruptible_a with_o the_o divine_a will_n and_o that_o which_o seek_v to_o move_v it_o to_o the_o contrary_n may_v well_o bruise_v and_o wound_n yea_o kill_v it_o while_o it_o be_v but_o with_o bread_n or_o with_o some_o strong_a cordial_a or_o liquor_n by_o the_o springing_n forth_o and_o effusion_n of_o the_o stream_n of_o this_o holy_a life_n in_o thou_o than_o thou_o be_v to_o stand_v in_o a_o passiveness_n and_o forbearance_n wait_v upon_o the_o will_n and_o motion_n of_o this_o holy_a life_n which_o be_v for_o every_o one_o with_o the_o will_n of_o god_n that_o thou_o may_v do_v such_o or_o such_o thing_n which_o that_o life_n require_v of_o thou_o and_o then_o whatever_o thou_o set_v about_o to_o do_v not_o in_o thy_o own_o natural_a will_n but_o in_o the_o will_n up_o in_o a_o few_o word_n the_o particular_a use_n and_o benefit_n which_o the_o saint_n receive_v in_o order_n to_o a_o grow_a and_o proceed_v in_o holiness_n through_o the_o improve_n the_o come_v soul_n as_o aforesaid_a have_v a_o very_a special_a influence_n to_o kindle_v most_o ardent_a love_n in_o it_o towards_o he_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o that_o love_n of_o his_o so_o wonderful_o manifest_v in_o the_o outward_a whereby_o for_o the_o soul_n save_v from_o sin_n and_o wrath_n he_o so_o humble_v himself_o by_o so_o many_o step_n and_o degree_n and_o bear_v such_o indignity_n and_o suffering_n as_o never_o any_o one_o do_v and_o all_o in_o love_n to_o the_o soul_n and_o for_o it_o and_o for_o its_o deliverance_n as_o aforesaid_a and_o that_o he_o shall_v be_v manifest_a in_o the_o outward_a body_n and_o suffer_v so_o deep_o therein_o even_o for_o the_o deliver_v our_o outward_a body_n also_o from_o sin_n and_o wrath_n these_o thing_n i_o say_v as_o present_v and_o set_v
