temptation_n for_o the_o spirit_n indeed_o be_v ready_a but_o the_o flesb_n be_v weak_a he_o be_v sleep_v sound_n when_o he_o shall_v have_v be_v watch_v and_o pray_v four_o when_o he_o follow_v christ_n he_o follow_v he_o cold_o &_o a_o far_o off_o &_o do_v not_o cleave_v to_o he_o neat_o &_o fervent_o as_o his_o true_a follower_n shall_v have_v do_v five_o by_o enter_v into_o the_o hall_n of_o the_o high_a priest_n among_o his_o enemy_n he_o do_v cast_v himself_o into_o danger_n without_o necessity_n or_o any_o call_n thus_o many_o way_n he_o procure_v his_o own_o fall_n which_o man_n and_o that_o be_v devote_v and_o appoint_v for_o â—ell_v the_o word_n which_o the_o syrian_a interpreter_n use_v signify_v to_o destroy_v and_o abolish_v &_o in_o the_o old_a testament_n common_o signify_v a_o thing_n devote_v to_o god_n which_o can_v be_v redeem_v but_o must_v needs_o be_v abolish_v and_o destroy_v so_o the_o apostle_n by_o this_o anathematise_v or_o curse_v wish_v all_o mischief_n to_o himself_o both_o to_o his_o body_n and_o soul_n which_o be_v no_o less_o than_o eternal_a condemnation_n neither_o do_v he_o simple_o curse_v this_o way_n but_o he_o do_v it_o vehement_o as_o the_o word_n use_v by_o s._n matth._n import_v suppose_v there_o have_v be_v no_o more_o be_v this_o curse_v be_v a_o grievous_a sin_n god_n oftentimes_o even_o in_o this_o life_n which_o shall_v have_v shine_v and_o do_v shine_v with_o the_o beam_n of_o heavenly_a light_n his_o hand_n and_o foot_n pierce_v and_o in_o a_o word_n all_o wound_v for_o our_o transgression_n and_o bruise_a for_o our_o iniquity_n and_o now_o give_v his_o body_n that_o be_v break_v and_o his_o blood_n that_o be_v shed_v as_o the_o food_n of_o our_o soul_n unto_o eternal_a life_n o_o what_o a_o wonderful_a and_o sweet_a sight_n be_v this_o what_o reverence_n and_o humility_n what_o love_n and_o thanksgiving_n shall_v it_o raise_v up_o in_o we_o do_v thou_o see_v what_o thou_o receive_v in_o sorrow_n if_o it_o may_v have_v stand_v with_o their_o well-being_n he_o will_v have_v be_v glad_a that_o thy_o have_v not_o be_v sorrowful_a at_o all_o yet_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n he_o declare_v that_o this_o their_o sorrow_n which_o his_o epistle_n have_v wrought_v in_o they_o be_v matter_n of_o joy_n unto_o he_o not_o for_o that_o they_o be_v grieve_v but_o because_o they_o have_v sorrow_v in_o a_o godly_a manner_n and_o that_o unto_o repentance_n unto_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o good_a of_o their_o own_o soul_n he_o confirm_v this_o particular_o by_o the_o general_a doctrine_n of_o the_o fruit_n of_o godly_a sorrow_n in_o the_o place_n that_o i_o have_v read_v for_o godly_a sorrow_n division_n say_v he_o work_v repentance_n etc._n etc._n here_o he_o commend_v godly_a sorrow_n of_o which_o nature_n that_o be_v which_o his_o epistle_n wrought_v in_o the_o corinthian_n first_o the_o very_a name_n he_o give_v it_o contain_v a_o argument_n of_o commendation_n for_o the_o sorrow_n which_o he_o speak_v of_o be_v a_o godly_a sorrow_n or_o a_o sorrow_n according_a to_o god._n 2._o he_o commend_v it_o from_o the_o fruit_n of_o it_o it_o be_v such_o a_o sorrow_n as_o work_v repentance_n even_o a_o repentance_n that_o be_v never_o to_o be_v repent_v of_o because_o it_o be_v unto_o salvation_n 3._o he_o commend_v it_o by_o oppose_v the_o contrary_a sorrow_n nam_o the_o sorrow_n of_o this_o world_n which_o work_v death_n that_o we_o may_v proceed_v the_o more_o clear_o we_o shall_v begin_v at_o this_o last_o point_n the_o sorrow_n of_o this_o world_n world_n say_v he_o work_v death_n he_o oppose_v as_o you_o see_v two_o kind_n of_o sorrow_n the_o one_o to_o the_o other_o the_o sorrow_n which_o be_v according_a to_o god_n and_o the_o sorrow_n of_o this_o world_n the_o sorrow_n of_o the_o good_a corinthian_n have_v this_o good_a in_o it_o that_o it_o be_v not_o a_o sorrow_n of_o this_o world_n which_o be_v no_o matter_n of_o joy_n for_o it_o work_v death_n all_o sorrow_n presuppose_v love_n for_o no_o man_n sorrow_v but_o for_o the_o loss_n or_o want_n of_o that_o which_o he_o love_v therefore_o where_o this_o worldly_a sorrow_n be_v there_o be_v also_o a_o love_n of_o this_o world_n such_o be_v the_o sorrow_n that_o man_n have_v for_o the_o loss_n of_o worldly_a thing_n wealth_n honour_n delight_n or_o friend_n if_o their_o heart_n and_o love_n be_v set_v upon_o these_o thing_n they_o foolish_o and_o without_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n rejoice_v in_o they_o when_o they_o have_v they_o and_o be_v drink_v with_o that_o transitory_a happiness_n they_o seek_v for_o no_o more_o on_o the_o contraâ—y_n when_o they_o loss_n or_o want_v they_o their_o heart_n be_v cast_v down_o and_o they_o be_v press_v down_o with_o sorrow_n inordinate_o such_o a_o sorrow_n the_o apostle_n recommend_v not_o nay_o he_o dehort_v from_o it_o for_o it_o work_v death_n this_o sorrow_n can_v do_v no_o good_a when_o a_o man_n have_v lose_v his_o riches_n if_o he_o sorrow_n for_o that_o this_o sorrow_n will_v not_o restore_v his_o wealth_n to_o he_o again_o if_o a_o man_n have_v lose_v his_o honour_n the_o sorrow_n which_o he_o have_v for_o that_o will_v not_o recover_v it_o again_o if_o he_o have_v lose_v his_o friend_n or_o child_n shall_v he_o mourn_v never_o so_o much_o for_o they_o his_o sorrow_n will_v not_o bring_v they_o to_o life_n again_o so_o this_o sorrow_n can_v do_v no_o good_a yea_o on_o the_o contrary_a it_o do_v great_a harm_n it_o work_v death_n it_o make_v the_o way_n to_o bodily_a death_n especial_o when_o it_o be_v inordinate_a the_o heaviness_n of_o the_o spirit_n dry_v up_o the_o bone_n say_v solomon_n proverb_n 17._o 22._o sorrow_n have_v kill_v many_o and_o there_o be_v no_o profit_n in_o it_o say_v the_o wiseman_n ecclestast_n chap._n 30._o 23._o and_o which_o be_v worst_a of_o all_o this_o sorrow_n lead_v to_o eternal_a death_n for_o god_n be_v offend_v with_o it_o it_o stir_v up_o a_o man_n to_o do_v many_o thing_n whereat_o god_n be_v offend_v and_o make_v a_o man_n guilty_a of_o eternal_a death_n so_o this_o sorrow_n be_v no_o matter_n of_o joy_n but_o the_o sorrow_n that_o be_v in_o the_o corinthian_n and_o which_o ought_v to_o be_v in_o we_o all_o be_v of_o another_o kind_n it_o be_v a_o godly_a sorrow_n or_o a_o sorrow_n according_a to_o god_n for_o better_a understanding_n of_o this_o god._n consider_v first_o that_o this_o sorrow_n which_o be_v according_a to_o god_n be_v such_o a_o sorrow_n as_o a_o man_n
far_o be_v we_o from_o this_o who_o testify_v this_o sorrow_n by_o the_o abundance_n of_o his_o tear_n it_o may_v be_v you_o will_v say_v to_o i_o we_o can_v attain_v to_o this_o yet_o if_o thou_o right_o look_v upon_o thy_o own_o sin_n and_o be_v true_o grieve_v because_o thereby_o thou_o have_v offend_v god_n and_o have_v deprive_v thyself_o of_o he_o his_o grace_n and_o spirit_n thou_o may_v first_o value_n as_o it_o be_v and_o estimate_n how_o great_a a_o sorrow_n thy_o sin_n deserve_v and_o be_v so_o dispose_v that_o nothing_o be_v so_o displease_v and_o hateful_a to_o thou_o as_o thy_o sin_n be_v thou_o may_v come_v to_o this_o that_o with_o a_o upright_a heart_n thou_o may_v say_v to_o god_n o_o lord_n these_o my_o sin_n so_o many_o so_o grievous_a so_o long_o continue_v in_o so_o often_o fall_v into_o deserve_v to_o be_v bewail_v with_o tear_n of_o blood_n if_o my_o heart_n can_v possible_o have_v they_o 2._o thou_o mâ—y_v wish_v from_o god_n that_o thy_o head_n be_v water_n and_o that_o thy_o eye_n be_v fountain_n of_o tear_n that_o thou_o may_v lament_v as_o thou_o ought_v to_o do_v jer._n 9_o 1._o thou_o may_v pray_v to_o god_n that_o he_o will_v give_v thou_o the_o grace_n of_o tear_n and_o that_o he_o who_o bring_v water_n out_o of_o the_o hard_a rock_n will_v soften_v thy_o hard_a heart_n and_o make_v it_o to_o melt_v with_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n 4._o thou_o may_v endeavour_v more_o and_o more_o and_o work_v upon_o thy_o own_o heart_n for_o obtain_v this_o unfeigned_a grief_n this_o if_o we_o do_v god_n will_v accept_v even_o of_o our_o imperfect_a sorrow_n for_o the_o perfect_a sorrow_n of_o christ_n jesus_n and_o for_o these_o strong_a cry_n and_o tear_n even_o the_o tear_n of_o blood_n which_o he_o shed_v for_o we_o in_o the_o day_n of_o his_o flesh_n before_o we_o go_v hence_o other_o it_o may_v be_v demand_v whether_o or_o not_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v only_o for_o our_o own_o sin_n i_o answer_v it_o must_v be_v also_o for_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o there_o be_v no_o man_n that_o have_v zeal_n to_o the_o glory_n and_o honour_n of_o god_n and_o love_n to_o the_o soul_n of_o other_o man_n but_o he_o must_v be_v sorry_a when_o he_o see_v they_o by_o their_o sin_n despise_v the_o majesty_n of_o god_n trample_v his_o law_n under_o foot_n &_o cast_v themselves_o headlong_o into_o perdition_n hence_o the_o bless_a patriarch_n and_o prophet_n who_o be_v the_o most_o sincere_a friend_n of_o god_n be_v so_o frequent_a in_o holy_a scripture_n in_o mourn_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o oâ—hers_n horror_n have_v take_v hold_n of_o i_o say_v david_n psal_n 119._o thy_o zeal_n have_v consume_v i_o river_n of_o tear_n gush_v out_o of_o my_o eye_n because_o the_o wicked_a despise_v thy_o law_n and_o forget_v thy_o word_n o_o that_o my_o head_n be_v water_n say_v jer._n 9_o 1._o complain_v for_o the_o sin_n and_o misery_n of_o his_o people_n and_o that_o my_o eye_n be_v fountain_n of_o tear_n that_o i_o may_v weep_v day_n and_o night_n thus_o the_o righteous_a soul_n of_o lot_n be_v vex_v continual_o because_o of_o the_o abomination_n that_o he_o do_v hear_v and_o see_v in_o sodom_n we_o be_v command_v to_o pray_v continual_o that_o the_o name_n of_o god_n may_v be_v hallow_v and_o glorify_v and_o therefore_o it_o can_v be_v but_o great_a matter_n of_o grief_n to_o they_o that_o love_n god_n to_o see_v his_o name_n daily_o dishonour_v and_o prophen_v hence_o they_o that_o be_v mark_v ezek._n 9_o be_v such_o as_o do_v sigh_v and_o mourn_v not_o only_o for_o their_o own_o sin_n but_o also_o for_o all_o the_o sin_n and_o abomination_n do_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o land_n second_o it_o may_v be_v ask_v do_v this_o godly_a sorrow_n only_o reach_v to_o our_o sin_n and_o to_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o heaven_n i_o answer_v it_o reach_v also_o to_o the_o consequent_n of_o sin_n and_o first_o to_o the_o imperfection_n that_o be_v in_o we_o in_o serve_v of_o god._n this_o be_v matter_n of_o grief_n even_o unto_o the_o most_o godly_a they_o be_v affect_v with_o a_o godly_a sorrow_n for_o this_o that_o they_o serve_v not_o god_n so_o perfect_o as_o they_o shall_v they_o say_v with_o s._n paul_n with_o grief_n of_o heart_n the_o evil_a that_o i_o will_v not_o do_v that_o i_o do_v and_o the_o good_a that_o i_o will_v do_v that_o i_o do_v not_o o_o miserable_a man_n that_o i_o be_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o this_o body_n of_o death_n 2._o this_o godly_a sorrow_n also_o extend_v itself_o to_o the_o desire_n of_o our_o heavenly_a country_n the_o godly_a mourn_n that_o they_o be_v so_o long_o absent_a from_o the_o lord_n and_o continue_v so_o long_o in_o the_o place_n of_o their_o exile_n they_o say_v with_o david_n woe_n be_v i_o that_o i_o sojourn_v in_o mesech_n and_o that_o i_o dwell_v in_o the_o tent_n of_o kedar_n the_o child_n of_o israel_n mourn_v because_o of_o their_o exile_n in_o babylon_n by_o the_o river_n of_o babylon_n say_v they_o psal_n 137._o we_o sit_v &_o we_o weep_v &_o we_o remember_v zion_n they_o be_v spoil_v by_o the_o babylonian_n of_o their_o good_n of_o their_o land_n honour_n child_n and_o friend_n and_o yet_o the_o chief_a matter_n of_o their_o grief_n be_v that_o they_o want_v zion_n albeit_o that_o be_v but_o a_o earthly_a zion_n and_o now_o spoil_v burn_v and_o sack_v how_o much_o more_o have_v we_o reason_n that_o sit_v by_o the_o water_n of_o babel_n that_o be_v of_o the_o transitory_a pleasure_n of_o the_o confusion_n of_o this_o world_n to_o weep_v when_o we_o remember_v the_o permanent_a joy_n of_o the_o heavenly_a zion_n which_o can_v be_v spoil_v and_o whereunto_o no_o dart_n or_o enemy_n can_v have_v access_n but_o the_o apostle_n speak_v here_o not_o of_o this_o sorrow_n but_o of_o the_o sorrow_n which_o be_v for_o our_o own_o sin_n and_o for_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o and_o unto_o it_o he_o ascrive_v this_o bless_a effect_n that_o follow_v which_o be_v to_o work_v repentance_n unto_o salvation_n not_o to_o be_v repent_v of_o repentance_n it_o may_v be_v demand_v how_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n work_v repentance_n since_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v a_o chief_a part_n of_o repentance_n it_o be_v answer_v first_o by_o some_o that_o the_o apostle_n say_v not_o simple_o that_o it_o work_v repentance_n but_o that_o it_o work_v repentance_n unto_o salvation_n that_o be_v it_o make_v our_o repentance_n true_a profitable_a and_o save_a for_o it_o be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o life_n of_o our_o repentance_n so_o we_o say_v that_o a_o sober-man_n make_v a_o healthfull-man_n or_o that_o a_o man_n addict_v to_o study_n make_v a_o learnedman_n 2._o this_o godly_a sorrow_n also_o work_v repentance_n itself_o in_o respect_n of_o diverse_a part_n thereof_o repentance_n have_v many_o thing_n in_o it_o and_o some_o of_o they_o be_v wrought_v in_o we_o or_o great_o promove_v by_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n for_o clear_v of_o this_o consider_v that_o repentance_n be_v wrought_v in_o we_o after_o this_o manner_n penitent_n 1._o our_o mind_n be_v enlighten_v and_o the_o eye_n of_o it_o be_v open_v that_o we_o may_v see_v our_o sin_n the_o hynousnes_n and_o the_o deformity_n of_o they_o unless_o we_o have_v this_o sight_n we_o will_v never_o be_v grieve_v for_o they_o therefore_o david_n say_v psal_n 51._o i_o acknowledge_v my_o iniquity_n &_o my_o sin_n be_v continual_o before_o my_o eye_n so_o it_o be_v say_v of_o the_o prodigal_a son_n luk._n 15._o 17._o that_o he_o come_v to_o himself_o his_o eye_n be_v open_v to_o see_v his_o own_o misery_n and_o his_o sin_n up_o to_o a_o holy_a indignation_n and_o the_o take_n of_o a_o just_a revenge_n of_o ourselves_o because_o we_o have_v offend_v god_n as_o the_o apostle_n show_v in_o the_o next_o vers_fw-la hence_o
