A88579 A cleare and necessary vindication of the principles and practices of me Christopher Love, since my tryall before, and condemnation by, the High Court of Iustice. Whereby it is manifested, that a close prison, a long sword, a High Court, and a bloody scaffold, have not in the least altered my judgment. Whereas also the cruelty of the sentence, the insufficiency of the proofs, and my own innocency, are demonstrated. As also my grounds and reasons of giving in a narrative, and the lawfulness of the matter and titles of my petitions (though to usurpers) manifested and maintained. Together with a declaration of my judgement concerning Cromwells unlawfull invasion of the kingdom of Scotland. Written by me Christopher Love, Master of Arts, minister of Lawrence Iury, London; penned by me the eighth of August, fourteen days before my death. Love, Christopher, 1618-1651. 1651 (1651) Wing L3148; Thomason E790_5; ESTC R202748 58,288 49

body_n of_o the_o protestant_a religion_n in_o christendom_n be_v best_o able_a to_o defend_v themselves_o and_o succour_v other_o reform_a church_n when_o endanger_v and_o design_v to_o ruin_n by_o popish_a enemy_n therefore_o the_o discountenance_n of_o the_o covenant_a party_n in_o england_n and_o the_o ruin_n of_o they_o in_o scotland_n be_v the_o ready_a way_n to_o endanger_v conquer_v ruin_v all_o other_o reform_a church_n in_o the_o world_n and_o how_o will_v this_o embolden_v and_o encourage_v popish_a adversary_n to_o invade_v and_o ruin_v the_o protestant_n while_o they_o see_v england_n and_o scotland_n who_o make_v up_o the_o great_a body_n of_o the_o protestant_a religion_n in_o christendom_n engage_v in_o a_o unbrotherly_a and_o un-christian_a war_n between_o themselves_o and_o weaken_v impoverish_v and_o destroy_v each_o other_o 5._o cromwell_n invasion_n of_o scotland_n be_v a_o extraordinary_a ground_n of_o joy_n to_o the_o pope_n and_o all_o his_o confederate_n have_v the_o conclave_n of_o rome_n plot_v together_o they_o can_v not_o wish_v a_o more_o happy_a and_o hopeful_a design_n to_o advance_v the_o interest_n of_o rome_n and_o catholic_n religion_n that_o do_v more_o glad_a and_o gratify_v the_o popish_a party_n than_o to_o see_v the_o protestant_a party_n in_o england_n and_o scotland_n ruin_v one_o another_o i_o have_v read_v a_o very_a remarkable_a story_n of_o a_o great_a politician_n in_o france_n that_o be_v cardinal_n richelieu_n that_o a_o little_a before_o his_o death_n be_v leave_v instruction_n and_o advice_n with_o the_o late_a french_a king_n that_o he_o will_v use_v his_o utmost_a endeavour_n to_o foment_n the_o late_a difference_n between_o the_o king_n of_o england_n and_o the_o parliament_n and_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a by_o the_o solicitation_n of_o his_o instrument_n to_o draw_v the_o house_n of_o commons_o in_o england_n to_o change_v their_o government_n from_o a_o kingdom_n into_o a_o commonwealth_n by_o which_o mean_v england_n and_o scotland_n will_v be_v embroil_v in_o war_n one_o against_o another_o which_o be_v the_o only_a and_o best_a policy_n of_o all_o to_o weaken_v and_o destroy_v the_o protestant_a religion_n and_o advance_v the_o interest_n of_o france_n and_o catholic_a religion_n the_o truth_n of_o this_o story_n be_v assert_v by_o a_o italian_a of_o good_a note_n and_o credit_n and_o publish_v by_o he_o and_o print_v in_o italy_n anno_fw-la 1645._o i_o shall_v say_v no_o more_o touch_v this_o particular_a but_o only_o this_o that_o i_o do_v very_o believe_v cromwel_n invade_v scotland_n in_o the_o year_n 1650._o make_v it_o a_o year_n of_o jubilee_n in_o rome_n but_o a_o year_n of_o slavery_n to_o england_n and_o scotland_n and_o a_o year_n of_o sorrow_n to_o all_o the_o protestant_a church_n round_o about_o we_o which_o put_v i_o upon_o the_o next_o sad_a consequence_n of_o this_o war_n viz._n 6._o it_o will_v be_v and_o be_v a_o great_a grief_n and_o sadden_v to_o all_o protestant_a state_n and_o church_n round_o about_o we_o when_o they_o consider_v how_o we_o who_o have_v live_v under_o one_o king_n unite_v in_o one_o covenant_n engage_v in_o one_o and_o the_o same_o quarrel_n that_o we_o shall_v ruin_v and_o destroy_v one_o another_o and_o that_o with_o such_o bloody_a rage_n and_o cruel_a hatred_n as_o we_o do_v what_o a_o grief_n be_v it_o to_o they_o to_o consider_v that_o we_o who_o may_v have_v be_v their_o helper_n be_v our_o own_o destroyer_n neither_o able_a to_o assist_v they_o abroad_o nor_o defend_v ourselves_o at_o home_n 7._o it_o will_v lay_v last_a foundation_n of_o irreconcilable_a discord_n between_o the_o two_o nation_n that_o we_o who_o be_v the_o dear_a friend_n will_v be_v to_o each_o other_o the_o great_a enemy_n 8._o there_o will_v be_v a_o toleration_n of_o all_o heresy_n and_o blasphemy_n in_o the_o church_n and_o a_o increase_n of_o all_o oppression_n and_o violence_n in_o the_o state_n these_o two_o usual_o go_v together_o judge_n 5._o 8._o they_o choose_v new_a god_n then_o be_v there_o war_n in_o their_o gate_n these_o with_o manifold_a more_o inconceivable_a mischief_n be_v likely_a to_o arise_v by_o reason_n of_o cromwel_n groundless_a and_o unwarrantable_a invasion_n of_o our_o neighbour_n nation_n the_o last_o work_n i_o have_v now_o to_o do_v about_o this_o vindication_n of_o myself_o be_v to_o take_v off_o some_o aspersion_n and_o slander_n unjust_o lay_v upon_o i_o 1._o some_o report_n that_o i_o be_o under_o great_a fear_n of_o death_n that_o much_o terror_n and_o tremble_a lay_n hold_v upon_o i_o to_o which_o i_o say_v that_o through_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o pardon_a mercy_n of_o god_n through_o the_o blood_n of_o sprinkle_v 14._o the_o bitterness_n fear_n and_o sting_n of_o death_n be_v much_o abate_v that_o i_o be_o deliver_v from_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n to_o which_o all_o the_o former_a part_n part_n of_o my_o life_n i_o be_v subject_a unto_o bondage_n i_o speak_v it_o without_o vanity_n to_o the_o praise_n of_o god_n glorious_a grace_n i_o former_o have_v have_v more_o fear_n at_o the_o pull_v out_o of_o a_o tooth_n than_o now_o i_o have_v at_o the_o thought_n of_o the_o cut_n off_o my_o head_n i_o mention_v it_o to_o the_o praise_n of_o god_n who_o support_v i_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o sentence_n of_o death_n pronounce_v against_o i_o in_o the_o court_n do_v no_o whit_n dismay_v i_o i_o have_v as_o much_o calmness_n and_o quietness_n in_o my_o mind_n at_o that_o very_a ho●●e_n as_o ever_o i_o have_v in_o all_o my_o life_n yea_o since_o i_o have_v be_v condemn_v i_o bless_v god_n i_o have_v not_o have_v one_o trouble_a thought_n nor_o break_v one_o hour_n rest_n nor_o forbear_v one_o meal_n meat_n yea_o the_o very_a night_n before_o i_o be_v to_o suffer_v i_o sup_v as_o hearty_o and_o sleep_v as_o sweet_o as_o ever_o i_o do_v in_o all_o my_o life_n the_o hope_n i_o have_v of_o a_o eternal_a life_n do_v swallow_v up_o the_o fear_n of_o a_o temporal_a death_n 2._o objection_n but_o you_o confess_v you_o have_v sin_v therefore_o you_o be_v put_v to_o death_n for_o your_o sin_n sol._n i_o have_v indeed_o and_o i_o ought_v to_o confess_v my_o sin_n against_o god_n so_o condemn_v myself_o and_o justify_v god_n acknowledge_v that_o i_o have_v sin_v and_o he_o be_v righteous_a in_o all_o that_o be_v come_v upon_o i_o so_o that_o it_o be_v just_a with_o the_o most_o high_a to_o cut_v i_o off_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o my_o day_n and_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o my_o ministry_n but_o yet_o i_o never_o say_v that_o i_o have_v sin_v against_o god_n in_o the_o particular_a fact_n for_o which_o that_o cruel_a sentence_n be_v past_a upon_o i_o i_o say_v still_o as_o i_o do_v at_o the_o bar_n when_o i_o receive_v the_o sentence_n of_o death_n that_o god_n do_v not_o condemn_v i_o when_o i_o be_v judge_v that_o neither_o god_n nor_o my_o own_o conscience_n do_v condemn_v i_o of_o sin_n i_o have_v transgress_v their_o bloody_a law_n it_o be_v true_a yet_o not_o break_v any_o command_n of_o god_n in_o so_o do_v they_o have_v sin_v in_o make_v such_o law_n not_o i_o in_o break_v they_o i_o be_o far_o from_o think_v that_o i_o have_v sin_v in_o what_o i_o have_v do_v to_o desire_v the_o king_n may_v agree_v with_o the_o scot_n upon_o the_o interest_n of_o religion_n and_o the_o term_n of_o the_o covenant_n to_o relieve_v that_o gallant_a gentleman_n major_a general_n massey_n to_o pray_v for_o and_o endeavour_v after_o the_o good_a of_o the_o godly_a in_o the_o neighbour_n nation_n of_o scotland_n who_o be_v brethren_n in_o covenant_n with_o we_o i_o count_v all_o this_o my_o duty_n not_o my_o sin_n yet_o i_o deny_v not_o but_o as_o infirmity_n do_v cleave_v to_o my_o duty_n so_o in_o the_o way_n of_o management_n of_o this_o business_n inadvertency_n indiscretion_n and_o too_o much_o openness_n may_v cleave_v to_o these_o act_n of_o i_o but_o that_o the_o thing_n itself_o be_v evil_a that_o i_o never_o have_v never_o shall_v confess_v 3._o object_n some_o be_v not_o ashamed_a to_o say_v that_o i_o be_o a_o debauch_a person_n that_o i_o have_v be_v guilty_a of_o uncleanness_n sol._n this_o i_o declare_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n be_v most_o abominable_o false_a as_o luther_n say_v of_o himself_o that_o he_o be_v not_o tempt_v to_o covetousness_n so_o through_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n i_o can_v say_v it_o without_o vanity_n or_o falsehood_n i_o have_v not_o be_v tempt_v to_o uncleanness_n i_o know_v no_o ground_n of_o this_o report_n but_o this_o that_o on_o easter-day_n night_n last_o be_v six_o year_n one_o of_o my_o name_n master_n edward_n love_n a_o chaplain_n in_o the_o army_n be_v question_v before_o justice_n rich_n dwell_v about_o chancery_n lane_n for_o be_v find_v in_o bed_n
take_v notice_n of_o the_o bloody_a policy_n of_o the_o man_n in_o present_a power_n as_o also_o of_o the_o simplicity_n and_o folly_n of_o the_o member_n of_o the_o high_a court_n the_o politician_n that_o sit_v at_o stern_a do_v make_v some_o of_o the_o silly_a member_n of_o the_o high_a court_n believe_v that_o to_o preserve_v the_o honour_n of_o the_o state_n i_o must_v be_v condemn_v for_o two_o of_o the_o high_a court_n tell_v i_o they_o must_v condemn_v i_o for_o the_o honour_n of_o the_o parlinment_n and_o if_o they_o do_v condemn_v i_o yet_o the_o parliament_n will_v pardon_v i_o if_o i_o will_v but_o petition_v they_o for_o mercy_n by_o this_o mean_n they_o inveigle_v the_o high_a court_n to_o pass_v the_o bloody_a sentence_n of_o death_n upon_o i_o with_o the_o less_o regret_n of_o conscience_n 6._o i_o desire_v all_o man_n to_o take_v notice_n that_o there_o have_v not_o be_v such_o a_o eager_a furious_a and_o unjust_a prosecution_n of_o a_o minister_n blood_n since_o the_o day_n of_o queen_n mary_n as_o there_o have_v be_v of_o i_o for_o first_o although_o no_o two_o witness_n do_v prove_v any_o particular_a fact_n that_o be_v treasonable_a by_o their_o new_a act_n yet_o i_o must_v die_v yea_o second_o though_o the_o reverend_a minister_n of_o london_n the_o minister_n of_o kent_n and_o of_o worcestershire_n do_v petition_n in_o my_o behalf_n yet_o they_o will_v have_v my_o blood_n three_o though_o divers_a citizen_n of_o london_n and_o many_o of_o they_o of_o their_o own_o party_n do_v petition_n for_o i_o and_o so_o do_v my_o own_o congregation_n and_o divers_a other_o way_n and_o mean_v use_v for_o the_o preservation_n of_o my_o life_n yet_o so_o thirsty_a be_v they_o after_o my_o blood_n that_o nothing_o will_v satisfy_v they_o but_o my_o death_n four_o yea_o although_o divers_a of_o those_o who_o be_v member_n of_o the_o high_a court_n of_o justice_n do_v use_v their_o utmost_a interest_n to_o preserve_v my_o life_n yet_o all_o these_o application_n together_o with_o i_o and_o my_o wife_n be_v ineffectual_a they_o rather_o harken_v to_o the_o bloody_a solicitation_n of_o a_o malignant_a heretical_a and_o jesuitical_a party_n who_o thirst_v after_o my_o blood_n than_o to_o the_o desire_n of_o many_o godly_a and_o peaceable_a mind_a man_n 7._o i_o desire_v the_o reader_n to_o take_v notice_n that_o although_o the_o independent_a minister_n do_v petition_n for_o my_o reprieve_n for_o which_o i_o thank_v they_o yet_o they_o refuse_v to_o join_v with_o the_o presbyterian_a minister_n to_o petition_n for_o my_o life_n unless_o they_o will_v do_v those_o thing_n which_o they_o can_v not_o do_v to_o save_v their_o own_o life_n i_o say_v they_o refuse_v to_o join_v with_o they_o to_o petition_n for_o a_o pardon_n unless_o they_o will_v own_o the_o present_a power_n declare_v against_o the_o scot_n and_o such_o like_a hard_a term_n will_v the_o independent_a brethren_n tie_v the_o presbyterian_a minister_n too_o else_o they_o will_v not_o join_v with_o they_o to_o beg_v for_o my_o life_n so_o that_o it_o seem_v their_o aim_n be_v more_o at_o the_o bring_n over_o the_o minister_n to_o join_v with_o the_o state_n faction_n than_o out_o of_o any_o aim_n to_o save_v my_o life_n 8._o i_o desire_v the_o reader_n to_o observe_v that_o since_o the_o day_n of_o queen_n mary_n there_o have_v be_v no_o protestant_a minister_n so_o unchristian_o deal_v withal_o as_o i_o have_v be_v and_o receive_v such_o hard_a measure_n and_o that_o from_o those_o who_o profess_v religion_n as_o i_o have_v do_v which_o i_o shall_v plain_o evince_v by_o undeniable_a demonstration_n first_o they_o hire_v one_o witness_n with_o vast_a sum_n of_o money_n promise_n of_o preferment_n to_o betray_v and_o ensnare_v i_o and_o bring_v in_o evidence_n against_o i_o second_o they_o threaten_v other_o of_o the_o witness_n with_o death_n if_o they_o will_v not_o testify_v against_o i_o three_o they_o send_v several_a person_n to_o i_o to_o the_o tower_n to_o discourse_v and_o dispute_n with_o i_o on_o purpose_n to_o entrap_v and_o ensnare_v i_o four_o they_o put_v up_o large_a scaffold_n on_o the_o first_o day_n of_o my_o trial_n when_o the_o bloody_a charge_n be_v read_v against_o i_o that_o the_o great_a number_n may_v hear_v it_o and_o be_v prejudice_v against_o i_o but_o pull_v they_o down_o again_o when_o i_o be_v to_o make_v my_o defence_n in_o my_o own_o justification_n that_o so_o my_o defence_n may_v be_v smother_v then_o put_v the_o scaffold_n up_o again_o when_o the_o council_n for_o the_o commonwealth_n plead_v against_o i_o yea_o three_o they_o take_v away_o the_o writing_n and_o book_n which_o my_o notary_n take_v in_o court_n that_o so_o nothing_o may_v come_v to_o light_v but_o what_o please_v themselves_o so_o that_o they_o will_v put_v in_o and_o put_v out_o passage_n about_o my_o trial_n as_o shall_v make_v most_o for_o their_o advantage_n and_o my_o prejudice_n six_o they_o reject_v two_o of_o the_o councillor_n which_o themselves_o have_v assign_v i_o that_o they_o shall_v not_o plead_v for_o i_o because_o they_o have_v not_o take_v the_o engagement_n seven_o they_o will_v not_o allow_v mr._n hales_n who_o be_v one_o of_o my_o council_n to_o have_v a_o hour_n time_n to_o prepare_v himself_o to_o plead_v in_o my_o case_n but_o he_o must_v plead_v present_o or_o not_o at_o all_o although_o as_o i_o tell_v the_o court_n i_o never_o see_v master_n hales_n till_o that_o morning_n so_o can_v not_o acquaint_v he_o with_o my_o case_n nor_o do_v mr._n hales_v ever_o see_v the_o deposition_n of_o the_o witness_n yet_o for_o all_o this_o they_o will_v not_o allow_v he_o one_o day_n time_n to_o study_v my_o case_n yet_o it_o please_v god_n to_o assist_v mr._n hales_n that_o he_o do_v plead_v ex_fw-la tempore_fw-la to_o overthrow_v the_o charge_n prove_v it_o illegal_a etc._n etc._n they_o be_v so_o silence_v at_o and_o ashamed_a of_o their_o illegal_a proceed_n that_o after_o my_o notary_n have_v write_v a_o while_n they_o forbid_v he_o to_o write_v any_o more_o which_o they_o never_o do_v before_o they_o be_v afraid_a lest_o mr._n hales_n plead_v in_o my_o behalf_n shall_v come_v to_o light_v eight_o they_o have_v raise_v lie_v and_o slanderous_a report_n of_o i_o on_o purpose_n to_o kill_v my_o name_n as_o well_o as_o murder_v my_o body_n nine_o whereas_o i_o send_v colonel_n fortescue_n with_o a_o petition_n to_o cromwell_n to_o desire_v he_o to_o mediate_v to_o the_o house_n for_o my_o life_n upon_o his_o return_n to_o london_n with_o several_a letter_n in_o my_o behalf_n they_o have_v clap_v he_o close_a prisoner_n will_v not_o suffer_v he_o to_o come_v near_o i_o so_o that_o i_o know_v not_o what_o he_o do_v in_o my_o behalf_n yea_o they_o secure_v his_o letter_n will_v not_o suffer_v they_o to_o be_v deliver_v to_o those_o to_o who_o they_o be_v direct_v th●●_z so_o there_o may_v be_v no_o solicitation_n for_o the_o preservation_n of_o my_o life_n so_o that_o all_o the_o cost_n i_o be_o at_o in_o send_v be_v in_o effectual_a by_o this_o mean_n although_o it_o have_v already_o cost_v i_o for_o two_o messenger_n above_o one_o hundred_o and_o five_o pound_n yet_o the_o great_a kindness_n and_o labour_n of_o love_n the_o two_o gentleman_n express_v be_v never_o the_o less_o acceptable_a to_o i_o although_o it_o be_v not_o successful_a for_o i_o ten_o although_o i_o do_v not_o envy_v the_o safety_n or_o desire_v the_o ruin_n of_o other_o yet_o i_o can_v but_o take_v notice_n of_o the_o rage_n of_o some_o man_n towards_o i_o that_o i_o must_v die_v yet_o other_o live_v who_o have_v be_v correspondent_n from_o the_o beginning_n who_o have_v send_v letter_n to_o the_o king_n queen_n jermin_n riercy_n who_o send_v titus_n over_o as_o a_o agent_n to_o jersy_n which_o i_o never_o do_v all_o this_o alford_n adam_n and_o far_o who_o be_v my_o accuser_n have_v do_v yet_o they_o must_v be_v acquit_v and_o i_o execute_v i_o mention_v not_o this_o out_o of_o envy_n to_o they_o i_o have_v none_o in_o my_o heart_n towards_o they_o i_o wish_v their_o life_n not_o their_o death_n but_o the_o reason_n why_o i_o mention_v this_o be_v to_o let_v the_o world_n see_v why_o their_o rage_n be_v thus_o against_o i_o it_o be_v not_o for_o the_o merit_n of_o my_o fact_n for_o than_o they_o shall_v punish_v other_o who_o be_v far_o more_o guilty_a but_o it_o be_v mere_o their_o rage_n against_o my_o person_n and_o call_v as_o i_o be_o a_o minister_n and_o because_o i_o will_v not_o prostitute_v my_o conscience_n to_o their_o ambition_n and_o usurpation_n eleven_o the_o high_a court_n will_v not_o allow_v the_o common_a privilege_n to_o have_v witness_n for_o i_o hear_v though_o i_o earnest_o desire_v i_o have_v
also_o that_o no_o address_n to_o they_o will_v be_v receive_v by_o they_o unless_o the_o title_n they_o assume_v to_o themselves_o be_v give_v they_o by_o those_o who_o make_v application_n to_o they_o have_v thus_o speak_v to_o justify_v the_o lawfulness_n of_o the_o title_n of_o my_o petition_n i_o come_v now_o to_o justify_v the_o matter_n of_o my_o petition_n before_o i_o speak_v to_o the_o matter_n of_o my_o petition_n positive_o i_o shall_v in_o a_o word_n declare_v negative_o what_o be_v not_o the_o matter_n of_o my_o petition_n as_o 1._o i_o do_v not_o promise_v to_o act_v any_o thing_n for_o the_o promote_n and_o maintain_v this_o present_a government_n that_o have_v be_v equivalent_a to_o take_v the_o engagement_n 2._o i_o do_v not_o promise_v to_o join_v with_o the_o present_a power_n to_o oppose_v the_o scotish_a army_n though_o i_o be_v often_o solicit_v to_o it_o 3._o i_o do_v not_o declare_v that_o for_o which_o i_o be_v condemn_v be_v a_o sin_n against_o god_n i_o be_o of_o the_o sam●_z mind_n i_o be_v when_o at_o the_o high_a court_n after_o i_o have_v my_o sentence_n i_o say_v though_o they_o condemn_v i_o yet_o god_n and_o my_o own_o conscience_n do_v not_o condemn_v i_o they_o condemn_v i_o for_o treason_n yet_o my_o conscience_n do_v not_o tell_v i_o that_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n against_o god_n which_o they_o count_v treason_n i_o confess_v it_o be_v a_o transgression_n of_o their_o law_n but_o no_o transgression_n of_o any_o command_n of_o god_n in_o my_o first_o petition_n i_o have_v these_o word_n that_o i_o lay_v my_o mouth_n in_o the_o dust_n that_o there_o may_v be_v hope_n that_o the_o lord_n will_v pardon_v his_o manifold_a iniquity_n and_o that_o your_o honour_n will_v pass_v by_o his_o offence_n contrary_a to_o your_o law_n in_o my_o second_o petition_n i_o have_v these_o word_n through_o unadvisedness_n and_o weakness_n he_o be_v fall_v under_o your_o sad_a and_o heavy_a displeasure_n and_o have_v offend_v against_o the_o law_n of_o this_o commonwealth_n in_o my_o three_o there_o be_v no_o mention_n of_o sin_n at_o all_o in_o my_o four_o petition_n there_o be_v this_o passage_n the_o consideration_n whereof_o melt_v the_o heart_n of_o your_o petitioner_n and_o make_v he_o after_o a_o more_o narrow_a search_n of_o his_o heart_n and_o way_n more_o deep_o sensible_a than_o ever_o of_o his_o sin_n against_o god_n and_o more_o sorrowful_a for_o his_o crime_n and_o offence_n against_o the_o parliament_n in_o his_o late_a and_o great_a miscarriage_n in_o all_o which_o passage_n i_o have_v not_o renounce_v the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o cause_n for_o which_o i_o suffer_v nor_o acknowledge_v the_o thing_n itself_o to_o be_v sinful_a which_o i_o still_o maintain_v as_o justifiable_a and_o can_v say_v with_o the_o apostle_n happy_a be_v he_o that_o condemn_v not_o himself_o in_o the_o thing_n which_o he_o allow_v 4._o i_o do_v not_o in_o my_o petition_n justify_v the_o act_n upon_o which_o i_o be_v condemn_v to_o be_v righteous_a nor_o the_o court_n to_o be_v legal_a i_o do_v public_o protest_v against_o the_o former_a to_o be_v most_o unrighteous_a unmerciful_a and_o severe_a law_n as_o draco_n write_v in_o blood_n and_o have_v before_o the_o high_a court_n protest_v against_o the_o latter_a that_o they_o be_v not_o a_o leagall_a court_n of_o judicature_n to_o judge_v i_o for_o my_o life_n therefore_o i_o do_v earnest_o plead_v it_o be_v my_o birthright_n to_o have_v a_o jury_n my_o duty_n to_o demand_v it_o though_o their_o pleasure_n to_o deny_v it_o 5._o i_o do_v not_o absolute_o justify_v the_o sentence_n of_o the_o high_a court_n i_o have_v rather_o patient_o undergo_v the_o sentence_n than_o absolute_o to_o justify_v it_o i_o must_v confess_v through_o advice_n of_o lawyer_n and_o earnest_a solicitatious_a of_o friend_n i_o do_v in_o my_o last_o petition_n after_o a_o sort_n and_o in_o some_o sense_n say_v the_o sentence_n be_v just_a in_o what_o sense_n i_o shall_v by_o and_o by_o show_n my_o word_n be_v these_o he_o humble_o acknowledge_v he_o have_v so_o high_o violate_v the_o law_n of_o the_o commonwealth_n as_o that_o thereby_o he_o have_v render_v himself_o guilty_a of_o the_o sentence_n of_o death_n just_o past_a upon_o he_o by_o the_o high_a court_n of_o justice_n in_o which_o word_n first_o i_o do_v not_o justify_v their_o law_n nor_o second_o the_o legality_n of_o the_o court_n three_o nor_o the_o sufficiency_n of_o the_o testimony_n of_o the_o witness_n there_o do_v not_o any_o two_o witness_n evidence_n any_o one_o fact_n against_o i_o that_o be_v treason_n by_o their_o new_a act_n and_o that_o some_o member_n of_o the_o high_a court_n have_v confess_v unto_o i_o have_v speak_v negative_o what_o be_v not_o the_o matter_n of_o my_o petition_n i_o now_o come_v to_o speak_v positive_o what_o be_v the_o matter_n of_o my_o petition_n wherein_o i_o have_v say_v or_o do_v nothing_o contrary_a to_o conscience_n or_o my_o former_a principle_n the_o matter_n of_o my_o petition_n contain_v three_o part_n first_o the_o narratory_n part_n second_o the_o promissory_a part_n three_o the_o petitionary_a part_n at_o the_o last_n none_o can_v be_v offend_v unless_o such_o as_o thirst_v after_o my_o blood_n in_o that_o i_o do_v but_o beg_v a_o grant_n of_o my_o life_n that_o i_o may_v be_v rescue_v from_o go_v down_o into_o the_o grave_a none_o can_v just_o blame_v i_o for_o beg_v my_o life_n from_o any_o who_o have_v my_o life_n in_o the_o power_n of_o their_o hand_n i_o need_v not_o speak_v to_o that_o but_o the_o two_o former_a part_n of_o my_o petition_n viz._n the_o narratory_n and_o promissory_a part_n require_v more_o to_o be_v speak_v concerning_o they_o as_o touch_v the_o narratory_n part_n i_o shall_v begin_v with_o the_o first_o petition_n the_o narratory_n part_n run_v thus_o most_o humble_o show_v your_o petitioner_n have_v receive_v the_o sentence_n of_o death_n by_o the_o high_a court_n of_o justice_n be_v prepare_v himself_o in_o all_o humility_n and_o serious_a submission_n to_o drink_v that_o bitter_a cup_n the_o terror_n whereof_o though_o much_o abate_v through_o the_o pardon_a mercy_n of_o god_n in_o the_o blood_n of_o sprinkle_v yet_o your_o petitioner_n be_v bring_v down_o to_o the_o dust_n of_o death_n desire_v to_o see_v the_o righteous_a lord_n in_o this_o sentence_n acknowledge_v it_o to_o be_v just_a with_o the_o the_o most_o high_a to_o cut_v he_o off_o both_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o his_o day_n and_o the_o midst_n of_o his_o ministry_n but_o desire_n to_o be_v deep_o humble_v under_o the_o mighty_a hand_n of_o god_n lie_v low_o before_o the_o lord_n and_o you_o put_v his_o mouth_n in_o the_o dust_n that_o there_o may_v be_v hope_n that_o the_o lord_n will_v pardon_v his_o manifold_a iniquity_n and_o that_o your_o honour_n will_v pass_v by_o his_o offence_n do_v contrary_a to_o your_o law_n which_o as_o he_o former_o do_v so_o still_o do_v confess_v render_v he_o faulty_a for_o which_o he_o be_v unfeigned_o sorry_a your_o petitioner_n go_v not_o about_o to_o plead_v excuse_n but_o with_o a_o humble_a submission_n prostrate_v himself_o at_o your_o foot_n acknowledge_v he_o have_v offend_v against_o the_o act_n of_o this_o commonwealth_n and_o thereby_o be_v fall_v under_o your_o sore_a displeasure_n of_o which_o he_o be_v very_o deep_o sensible_a and_o sorrowful_a also_o this_o be_v all_o the_o narratory_n part_n which_o i_o hope_v offend_v no_o sober_a mind_n nor_o christian_a ear_n it_o offend_v some_o i_o have_v say_v no_o more_o it_o offend_v none_o i_o hope_v that_o i_o have_v say_v so_o much_o i_o desire_v to_o give_v you_o a_o few_o thing_n to_o observe_v out_o of_o these_o word_n in_o my_o first_o petition_n 1._o i_o say_v i_o desire_v to_o see_v the_o righteous_a lord_n in_o this_o sentence_n i_o do_v acknowledge_v god_n to_o be_v righteous_a what_o ever_o man_n be_v in_o all_o that_o be_v bring_v upon_o i_o he_o be_v righteous_a shall_v a_o worse_a sentence_n than_o death_n pass_v upon_o i_o 2._o i_o do_v acknowledge_v it_o to_o be_v just_a with_o the_o most_o high_a to_o cut_v i_o off_o both_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o my_o day_n and_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o my_o ministry_n i_o do_v not_o say_v it_o be_v just_a with_o man_n they_o shall_v answer_v for_o what_o they_o have_v do_v but_o it_o be_v just_a with_o god_n he_o be_v just_a in_o man_n injustice_n and_o righteous_a in_o man_n unrighteousness_n 3._o i_o say_v in_o my_o petition_n that_o i_o desire_v to_o be_v deep_o humble_v under_o the_o mighty_a hand_n of_o god_n lie_v low_o before_o the_o lord_n and_o you_o put_v his_o mouth_n in_o the_o dust_n if_o there_o may_v be_v hope_n that_o god_n will_v pardon_v his_o manifold_a iniquity_n and_o
