hungry_a belly_n and_o here_o if_o ever_o be_v make_v good_a that_o that_o man_n live_v not_o by_o bread_n alone_o but_o by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o so_o it_o be_v when_o he_o have_v never_o so_o much_o much_o more_o where_o he_o have_v but_o little_a and_o inconsiderable_a have_v but_o pulse_n instead_o of_o dainty_a fare_n a_o cruse_a of_o oil_n a_o little_a meal_n i_o say_v after_o this_o miracle_n our_o saviour_n have_v win_v so_o far_o upon_o their_o affection_n if_o not_o their_o understanding_n though_o very_o carnal_a they_o conclude_v this_o be_v that_o prophet_n which_o they_o expect_v ver_fw-la 14._o that_o be_v to_o say_v a_o special_a prophet_n beside_o john_n the_o baptist_n or_o elias_n as_o they_o think_v he_o shall_v come_v again_o be_v bear_v again_o misunderstand_v that_o place_n in_o mal._n 4._o and_o beside_o christ_n the_o messiah_n they_o expect_v another_o prophet_n before_o he_o as_o the_o ancient_n chrysost_n theoph._n cyril_n and_o beza_n also_o conceive_v and_o seem_v very_o plain_a in_o that_o place_n of_o john_n why_o do_v thou_o baptise_v if_o thou_o neither_o be_v elias_n nor_o that_o prophet_n nor_o yet_o the_o christ_n 25._o where_o he_o be_v distinguish_v from_o christ_n and_o yet_o i_o think_v here_o they_o be_v carry_v further_o in_o their_o apprehension_n of_o christ_n then_o to_o take_v he_o for_o such_o a_o prophet_n for_o say_v the_o text_n our_o saviour_n 15._o see_v that_o they_o will_v come_v and_o take_v he_o by_o violence_n to_o make_v he_o 23._o king_n he_o withdraw_v himself_o into_o a_o mount_n ver_fw-la 15._o therefore_o it_o shall_v seem_v they_o have_v some_o kind_n of_o flash_n that_o he_o be_v the_o messiah_n according_a to_o their_o carnal_a conceit_n of_o the_o messiah_n that_o he_o shall_v be_v a_o temporal_a king_n and_o come_v in_o pomp_n they_o will_v needs_o now_o make_v he_o king_n well_o our_o saviour_n now_o go_v to_o his_o disciple_n upon_o the_o sea_n and_o when_o he_o come_v into_o the_o ship_n it_o be_v forthwith_o ashore_o o_o how_o sweet_o and_o swift_o do_v any_o work_n of_o christ_n or_o for_o christ_n go_v on_o when_o he_o himself_o be_v with_o we_o the_o multitude_n they_o follow_v he_o their_o belly_n all_o this_o while_n be_v their_o instructer_n their_o god_n and_o their_o guide_n you_o follow_v i_o because_o of_o the_o loaf_n say_v our_o saviour_n and_o therefore_o he_o take_v this_o occasion_n to_o stir_v they_o up_o to_o seek_v for_o that_o food_n that_o perish_v not_o they_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o hunger_n of_o their_o belly_n and_o be_v take_v with_o his_o power_n to_o make_v such_o provision_n for_o the_o body_n even_o where_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o comparison_n o_o but_o their_o poor_a soul_n be_v in_o a_o starve_a condition_n and_o they_o be_v not_o sensible_a of_o this_o and_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n endeavour_v to_o raise_v their_o apprehension_n somewhat_o high_a spend_v much_o of_o the_o chapter_n afterward_o in_o set_v forth_o himself_o the_o true_a the_o spiritual_a shewbread_n or_o bread_n of_o face_n if_o they_o have_v but_o stomach_n and_o appetite_n suitable_a to_o the_o necessity_n of_o their_o poor_a perish_a soul_n but_o alas_o they_o have_v not_o aseeing_a eye_n nor_o a_o hear_n ear_n nor_o a_o believe_a heart_n when_o they_o hear_v of_o 9_o bread_n of_o which_o if_o they_o do_v eat_v they_o shall_v never_o hunger_n lord_n give_v we_o this_o bread_n say_v they_o but_o they_o know_v not_o well_o what_o they_o say_v for_o alas_o this_o bread_n be_v tender_v to_o they_o but_o they_o have_v no_o mind_n to_o it_o as_o the_o fountain_n of_o water_n be_v near_o to_o hagar_n but_o she_o see_v 15._o it_o not_o so_o the_o bread_n of_o life_n be_v now_o offer_v himself_o to_o they_o but_o they_o know_v it_o not_o and_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n reprove_v they_o you_o also_o say_v he_o have_v see_v i_o and_o yet_o believe_v not_o this_o bread_n be_v spiritual_a i_o be_o the_o bread_n but_o spiritual_o understand_v for_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n that_o quicken_v but_o the_o flesh_n profit_v nothing_o say_v he_o even_o to_o his_o own_o disciple_n who_o be_v already_o stumble_v at_o this_o sermon_n of_o he_o concern_v eat_n he_o flesh_n and_o drink_v his_o blood_n but_o say_v our_o saviour_n you_o believe_v not_o that_o be_v to_o say_v you_o will_v not_o take_v of_o this_o bread_n eat_v of_o it_o receive_v and_o apply_v the_o benefit_n of_o my_o death_n and_o resurrection_n and_o ascension_n and_o intercession_n and_o all_o i_o understand_v by_o this_o bread_n in_o a_o spiritual_a sense_n whereby_o the_o soul_n be_v nourish_v to_o eternal_a life_n and_o this_o be_v a_o sad_a symptom_n unto_o they_o that_o they_o be_v not_o belong_v to_o god_n purpose_n of_o grace_n they_o have_v little_a ground_n to_o conclude_v it_o as_o yet_o for_o our_o saviour_n say_v all_o that_o the_o father_n have_v give_v i_o shall_v come_v as_o yet_o you_o believe_v not_o you_o have_v not_o
there_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o jesus_n christ_n towards_o a_o poor_a sinner_n as_o a_o father_n that_o for_o a_o time_n to_o humble_v his_o child_n will_v make_v it_o strange_a to_o he_o o_o how_o full_a be_v his_o heart_n how_o much_o ado_n have_v he_o to_o hold_v as_o joseph_n to_o his_o brethren_n o_o it_o be_v the_o rejoice_v of_o jesus_n christ_n when_o poor_a sinner_n do_v come_v to_o he_o to_o see_v his_o seed_n to_o see_v his_o blood_n that_o be_v sow_v and_o his_o semen_n ecclesiae_fw-la to_o come_v up_o it_o be_v his_o rejoice_v and_o will_v any_o husband_n man_n in_o the_o world_n that_o sow_v precious_a seed_n when_o it_o put_v forth_o beat_v it_o down_o again_o nip_v off_o the_o bud_n the_o top_n of_o it_o it_o can_v be_v he_o be_v grieve_v when_o poor_a creature_n will_v not_o be_v persuade_v to_o come_v through_o hardness_n of_o heart_n and_o unbelief_n and_o waywardness_n we_o will_v not_o come_v to_o the_o fountain_n but_o sit_v down_o it_o may_v be_v some_o of_o we_o with_o hagar_n weep_v over_o our_o empty_a bottle_n and_o make_v sad_a moan_n and_o complaint_n for_o want_n of_o 15._o righteousness_n because_o of_o sin_n and_o yet_o come_v not_o to_o he_o this_o be_v a_o grief_n to_o he_o as_o it_o be_v among_o the_o jew_n o_o do_v he_o ever_o in_o the_o day_n of_o his_o flesh_n refuse_v any_o poor_a creature_n that_o come_v to_o he_o either_o for_o heal_v of_o soul_n or_o body_n which_o be_v the_o lesser_a yea_o when_o they_o come_v some_o of_o they_o for_o the_o heal_n of_o the_o body_n do_v he_o not_o heal_v the_o soul_n and_o all_o out_o of_o the_o abundant_a riches_n of_o his_o love_n to_o poor_a creature_n o_o sure_o then_o now_o he_o be_v in_o heaven_n at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o the_o father_n be_v no_o less_o tender_a of_o his_o poor_a people_n if_o any_o come_v now_o he_o will_v in_o no_o wise_a cast_v they_o out_o well_o the_o lord_n write_v these_o argument_n upon_o our_o heart_n it_o may_v be_v some_o of_o we_o may_v have_v occasion_n or_o have_v at_o present_a need_n of_o they_o to_o persuade_v we_o of_o this_o truth_n we_o now_o come_v to_o the_o application_n use_v 1_o and_o first_o in_o the_o first_o use_v it_o may_v serve_v for_o a_o lamentation_n to_o lament_v the_o backwardness_n of_o our_o heart_n to_o come_v to_o jesus_n christ_n for_o if_o our_o heart_n be_v not_o backward_o to_o come_v to_o he_o what_o need_v all_o this_o ado_n to_o make_v poor_a creature_n willing_a to_o come_v to_o jesus_n christ_n o_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n what_o a_o strange_a enmity_n be_v in_o our_o heart_n against_o the_o lord_n jesus_n that_o we_o run_v away_o from_o he_o instead_o of_o come_v yea_o though_o he_o follow_v with_o a_o pardon_n in_o his_o hand_n purchase_v with_o his_o blood_n o_o i_o be_o jesus_n who_o die_v for_o you_o turn_v unto_o i_o my_o heart_n be_v towards_o you_o 5._o turn_v unto_o i_o i_o delight_v not_o in_o your_o death_n turn_v unto_o i_o o_o why_o will_v you_o die_v and_o yet_o poor_a creature_n will_v not_o be_v persuade_v to_o come_v to_o jesus_n christ_n o_o what_o be_v it_o what_o be_v it_o brethren_n that_o can_v keep_v we_o off_o thus_o from_o jesus_n christ_n in_o our_o unwillingness_n to_o close_v with_o he_o to_o come_v unto_o he_o have_v not_o many_o of_o we_o many_o time_n clear_o be_v convince_v that_o our_o condition_n have_v be_v slark_n naught_o that_o we_o stand_v guilty_a before_o god_n and_o he_o will_v by_o no_o mean_n clear_v the_o guilty_a and_o convince_v that_o in_o jesus_n christ_n there_o be_v a_o do_v away_o of_o this_o guilt_n a_o blote_a out_o of_o the_o hand-writing_n that_o be_v against_o we_o and_o contrary_a to_o we_o if_o we_o will_v but_o come_v to_o he_o no_o we_o be_v like_o sullen_a creature_n will_v rather_o perish_v then_o come_v to_o jesus_n christ_n i_o do_v not_o believe_v but_o many_o of_o we_o be_v convince_v and_o what_o shift_n can_v we_o make_v to_o smother_v our_o conviction_n i_o know_v not_o but_o it_o appear_v we_o come_v not_o to_o jesus_n christ_n as_o long_o as_o the_o prodigal_n can_v have_v husk_n to_o fill_v his_o belly_n 26._o with_o he_o will_v not_o come_v home_o to_o his_o father_n as_o long_o as_o ever_o the_o poor_a woman_n in_o the_o gospel_n have_v any_o thing_n to_o spend_v upon_o the_o physician_n she_o come_v not_o to_o jesus_n christ_n as_o long_o as_o ever_o poor_a sinner_n can_v make_v a_o shift_n to_o daub_v over_o the_o breach_n that_o sometime_o the_o word_n make_v upon_o their_o conscience_n they_o will_v not_o come_v o_o the_o fault_n lie_v in_o the_o will_n brethren_n you_o will_v not_o come_v unto_o i_o 37._o say_v our_o saviour_n that_o you_o may_v have_v life_n how_o often_o will_v i_o have_v gather_v you_o as_o a_o hen_n do_v her_o chicken_n and_o you_o will_v not_o they_o will_v rather_o perish_v then_o be_v heal_v by_o such_o a_o hand_n even_o the_o hand_n of_o jesus_n christ_n o_o the_o deadly_a enmity_n that_o be_v in_o every_o one_o of_o we_o by_o nature_n what_o we_o be_v not_o willing_a to_o part_v with_o sin_n and_o therefore_o we_o come_v not_o to_o jesus_n christ_n we_o be_v not_o willing_a to_o be_v heal_v will_v thou_o be_v make_v whole_a we_o be_v profane_a and_o we_o will_v be_v so_o still_o proud_a and_o will_v be_v so_o still_o unclean_a 11._o and_o will_v be_v so_o still_o we_o know_v if_o we_o come_v to_o he_o put_v on_o christ_n we_o must_v put_v off_o the_o lust_n of_o our_o former_a conversation_n o_o wretched_a love_n to_o sin_n that_o prefer_v it_o before_o the_o lord_n jesus_n before_o the_o salvation_n of_o our_o poor_a soul_n what_o be_v we_o loath_a through_o the_o pride_n of_o our_o heart_n to_o take_v the_o shame_n of_o our_o iniquity_n haply_o something_o of_o this_o nature_n keep_v off_o the_o prodigal_n be_v it_o not_o more_o shame_n to_o do_v sin_n then_o to_o acknowledge_v it_o when_o it_o be_v do_v what_o be_v it_o brethren_n how_o strange_a a_o thing_n be_v than_o they_o will_v come_v to_o jesus_n christ_n to_o accept_v of_o that_o righteousness_n that_o pardon_n which_o shall_v cost_v we_o nothing_o but_o acceptance_n o_o the_o pride_n of_o our_o heart_n o_o the_o enmity_n of_o our_o heart_n against_o the_o lord_n jesus_n and_o be_v there_o such_o a_o heart_n in_o every_o one_o of_o we_o brethren_n yea_o even_o in_o the_o best_a until_o he_o overcome_v we_o with_o his_o lovingkindness_n and_o be_v not_o this_o a_o thing_n worthy_a to_o be_v bewail_v yea_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a with_o tear_n of_o blood_n be_v such_o a_o aversion_n from_o the_o blood_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o the_o dear_a love_n of_o our_o saviour_n to_o poor_a creature_n or_o what_o be_v it_o brethren_n be_v it_o the_o more_o love_n we_o find_v from_o jesus_n christ_n be_v our_o heart_n the_o more_o averse_a from_o he_o if_o he_o do_v profess_v himself_o a_o enemy_n to_o we_o to_o destroy_v and_o slay_v we_o if_o we_o come_v near_o he_o to_o scatter_v we_o with_o the_o stream_n of_o flame_a indignation_n issue_v from_o his_o throne_n and_o presence_n we_o can_v do_v no_o more_o than_o run_v away_o from_o he_o as_o many_o of_o we_o now_o do_v o_o that_o we_o can_v lay_v it_o to_o heart_n the_o second_o use_n shall_v be_v to_o show_v we_o the_o grievous_a nature_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n and_o haply_o this_o may_v make_v poor_a creature_n afraid_a of_o strain_v courtesy_n with_o christ_n and_o afraid_a to_o come_v to_o he_o because_o of_o their_o vileness_n etc._n etc._n to_o compliment_n with_o he_o first_o consider_v but_o the_o unreasonableness_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n above_o other_o sin_n indeed_o though_o all_o sin_n be_v unreasonable_a other_o sin_n they_o have_v some_o pretence_n of_o profit_n or_o pleasure_n but_o this_o have_v nothing_o but_o woe_n and_o misery_n attend_v it_o condemnation_n 2._o but_o that_o i_o shall_v not_o insist_v upon_o for_o there_o be_v hardly_o any_o thing_n but_o satan_n and_o a_o man_n carnal_a reason_n will_v put_v a_o specious_a pretence_n upon_o it_o therefore_o consider_v this_o unreasonableness_n first_o in_o respect_n of_o ourselves_o when_o we_o be_v sink_v and_o drown_v we_o will_v not_o so_o much_o as_o put_v out_o the_o hand_n to_o lay_v hold_n upon_o a_o twig_n upon_o something_o hold_v out_o to_o we_o be_v not_o this_o unreasonable_a and_o unnatural_a it_o race_v out_o the_o principle_n of_o self-preservation_n that_o be_v in_o every_o man_n by_o nature_n so_o that_o i_o will_v be_v bold_a to_o say_v the_o great_a reason_n in_o the_o world_n improve_v to_o keep_v off_o a_o poor_a soul_n from_o jesus_n christ_n be_v unreasonable_a it_o be_v the_o depravation_n of_o our_o carnal_a reason_n have_v it_o not_o be_v unreasonable_a if_o hagar_n have_v a_o fountain_n open_v she_o before_o her_o eye_n and_o she_o languish_v for_o thirst_n and_o must_v perish_v without_o it_o and_o yet_o will_v sit_v still_o be_v not_o this_o unreasonable_a again_o if_o we_o look_v upon_o the_o lord_n jesus_n who_o seek_v to_o we_o beseech_v we_o to_o accept_v of_o he_o of_o mercy_n of_o pardon_n in_o his_o blood_n the_o creator_n come_v down_o to_o the_o creature_n poor_a worm_n who_o have_v our_o be_v by_o his_o word_n and_o may_v be_v dissolve_v with_o his_o word_n and_o yet_o we_o stand_v it_o out_o and_o will_v not_o accept_v of_o he_o who_o will_v bestow_v himself_o and_o his_o infinite_a all-sufficiency_n upon_o we_o and_o we_o will_v not_o be_v not_o this_o unreasonable_a that_o a_o prince_n shall_v seek_v to_o a_o worthless_a rebel_n to_o be_v reconcile_v and_o he_o will_v not_o hear_v of_o it_o if_o he_o have_v any_o need_n of_o we_o and_o upon_o that_o account_n will_v have_v poor_a sinner_n to_o come_v to_o he_o to_o make_v a_o supply_n of_o his_o want_n it_o be_v something_o but_o all_o the_o want_n the_o indigency_n be_v on_o our_o part_n and_o therefore_o unbelief_n be_v the_o more_o unreasonable_a thing_n o_o how_o may_v we_o here_o break_v out_o and_o say_v hear_v you_o heaven_n and_o give_v ear_n o_o earth_n for_o the_o lord_n jesus_n the_o lord_n of_o both_o heir_n of_o all_o thing_n the_o offend_a majesty_n seek_v to_o poor_a rebel_a worm_n to_o be_v reconcile_v but_o they_o will_v not_o hear_v of_o it_o they_o come_v not_o in_o they_o close_v not_o with_o he_o second_o as_o the_o unreasonableness_n of_o the_o thing_n so_o also_o we_o may_v take_v notice_n of_o the_o injuriousness_n of_o this_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n i_o will_v a_o little_a insist_v upon_o this_o sin_n the_o more_o because_o that_o though_o i_o find_v many_o a_o poor_a heart_n seem_v to_o be_v weary_a of_o sin_n and_o afraid_a of_o sin_v against_o god_n in_o other_o kind_n yet_o see_v not_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n how_o exceed_o he_o sin_v against_o he_o by_o his_o unbelief_n not_o close_v with_o christ_n and_o come_v to_o he_o therefore_o see_v in_o the_o second_o place_n the_o injuriousness_n of_o this_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n how_o injurious_a it_o be_v to_o jesus_n christ_n brethren_n for_o if_o the_o truth_n be_v know_v what_o be_v the_o reason_n wherefore_o we_o need_v so_o much_o ado_n why_o we_o come_v not_o in_o to_o he_o we_o either_o think_v he_o can_v save_v we_o our_o sin_n be_v so_o great_a o_o say_v one_o there_o be_v never_o such_o a_o wretch_n as_o i_o though_o he_o have_v accept_v of_o great_a sinner_n such_o as_o paul_n and_o manasses_n and_o magdalen_n yet_o there_o be_v never_o such_o a_o wretch_n as_o i_o o_o sure_o my_o wound_n be_v such_o there_o be_v no_o heal_n for_o they_o what_o be_v this_o but_o to_o make_v jesus_n christ_n weak_a and_o a_o physician_n of_o no_o value_n be_v there_o any_o sin_n high_o than_o the_o imbrue_v their_o hand_n in_o the_o blood_n of_o jesus_n christ_n himself_o and_o suppose_v thou_o be_v such_o a_o one_o and_o this_o be_v that_o thou_o cry_v out_o of_o thou_o have_v come_v so_o often_o to_o the_o lord_n supper_n with_o a_o common_a heart_n which_o be_v to_o be_v guilty_a of_o his_o blood_n accessary_a to_o his_o death_n and_o can_v his_o blood_n cleanse_v even_o from_o the_o guilt_n of_o they_o that_o shed_v it_o be_v not_o many_o of_o the_o jew_n sensible_a os_fw-la this_o how_o dishonourable_a be_v 32._o this_o to_o jesus_n christ_n when_o we_o will_v be_v measure_v of_o he_o by_o ourselves_o we_o be_v apt_a to_o think_v of_o pardon_n and_o mercy_n as_o far_o as_o a_o man_n a_o creature_n bowel_n and_o thought_n will_v reach_v mind_n there_o be_v a_o end_n not_o mind_v that_o he_o be_v god_n as_o well_o as_o man_n this_o be_v a_o high_a wrong_n unto_o our_o saviour_n o_o he_o will_v not_o say_v the_o poor_a soul_n if_o he_o can_v yet_o he_o will_v not_o sure_a receive_v how_o many_o promise_n how_o many_o invitation_n how_o many_o expostulation_n he_o have_v make_v what_o entreaty_n to_o poor_a creature_n to_o be_v reconcile_v to_o he_o and_o yet_o call_v in_o question_n his_o willingness_n why_o what_o do_v you_o make_v of_o jesus_n christ_n o_o how_o do_v unbelief_n in_o effect_n dethrone_v jesus_n christ_n disgrace_v the_o throne_n of_o his_o glory_n rob_v he_o of_o his_o mercy_n of_o his_o power_n his_o love_n his_o bowel_n of_o that_o which_o he_o most_o glori_v in_o and_o be_v not_o this_o injurious_a then_o to_o thy_o dear_a saviour_n will_v not_o you_o think_v it_o a_o wrong_n to_o you_o from_o one_o of_o your_o child_n that_o have_v offend_v you_o as_o high_o as_o you_o can_v imagine_v suppose_v he_o have_v seek_v your_o life_n as_o absolom_n do_v david_n and_o now_o the_o father_n seek_v thou_o sue_v to_o thy_o son_n o_o how_o many_o promise_n thou_o heap_a up_o one_o upon_o another_o backe_v they_o with_o oath_n woo_v he_o intreate_v he_o to_o be_v reconcile_v to_o accept_v of_o a_o pardon_n no_o he_o believe_v you_o not_o notwithstanding_o all_o you_o can_v do_v or_o say_v that_o you_o be_v real_a in_o the_o thing_n be_v not_o this_o injurious_a do_v he_o not_o wrong_v exceed_o in_o this_o as_o well_o as_o in_o the_o former_a and_o be_v not_o this_o the_o very_a case_n three_o see_v how_o much_o unkindness_n
