XXXV 1 Eight and fourty cities for the Levites with their suburâ—s and measure thereof 6 Six of them are to be cities of refuge 9 The laws of murder 31 No satisfaction for murder ANd the LORD spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho saying 2 * Josh 21. â— Command the children of Israel that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in and ye shall give also unto the Levites suburbs for the cities round about them 3 And the cities shall they have to dwell in and the suburbs of them shall be for their cattel and for their goods and for all their beasts 4 And the suburbs of the cities which ye shall give unto the Levites shall reach from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits round about 5 And ye shall measure from without the city on the east-side two thousand cubits and on the south-side two thousand cubits and on the west side two thousand cubits and on the north-side two thousand cubits and the city shall be refuge wither he was fled and he shall abide in it unto the death of the high priest which was anointed with the holy oyl 26 But if the slayer shall at any time come without the border of the city of his refuge whether he was fled 27 And the revenger of bloud finde him without the borders of the city of his refuge and the revenger of bloud kill the slayer †Heb. no bloud shall be to him he shall not be guilty of bloud 28 Because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest but after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of II. 1 David by Gods direction with his company goeth up to Hebron where he is made king of Judah 5 He commendeth them of Jabesh-gilead for their kindness to Saul 8 Abner maketh Ish-bosheth king of Israel 12 A mortal skirmish between twelve of Abners and twelve of Joabs men 18 Asahel is slain 25 At Abners motion Joab soundeth a retreat 32 Asahels burial ANd it came to pass after this that David enquired of the LORD saying Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah And the LORD said unto him Go up And David said Whither shall I go up And he said Unto Hebron 2 So David went up thither and his two wives also Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail Nabals wife the Carmelite 3 And his men that were with him did David bring up every man with his houshold and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron 4 * 1 Mac. 1.57 And the men of Judah came and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah and they told David saying That * 1 Sam. 31.13 the men of Jabesh-gilead were they that buried Saul 5 ¶ And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh-gilead and said unto them Blessed be ye of the LORD that ye have shewed this kindness unto your lord even unto Saul and have buried him 6 And now the LORD shew kindness and truth unto you and I also will requite you this kindness because ye have done this thing 7 Therefore now let your hands be strengthned and †Heb. be ye the sons of valour be ye valiant for your master Saul is dead and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them 8 ¶ But Abner the son of Ner captain of †Heb. the host which was Sauls Sauls host took Ish-bosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim 9 And he made him king over Gilead and over the Ashurites and over Jezreel and over Ephraim and over Benjamin and over all Israel 10 Ish-bosheth Sauls son was fourty years old when he began to reign over Israel and reigned two years but the house of Judah followed David 11 And the †Heb. number of days time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six moneths 12 ¶ And Abner the son of Ner and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon 13 And Joab the son of Zeruiah and the servants of David went out and met †Heb. them together together by the pool of Gibeon and they sat down the one on the one side of the pool and the other on the other side of the pool 14 And Abner said to Joab Let the young men now arise and play before us And Joab said Let them arise 15 Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin which pertained to Ish-bosheth the son of Saul and twelve of the servants of David 16 And they caught every one his fellow by the head and thrust his sword in his fellows side so they fell down together wherefore that place was called ‖ That is The field of strong men Helkath-hazzurim which is in Gibeon 17 And there was a very sore battel that day and Abner was beaten and the men of Israel before the servants of David 18 ¶ And there were three sons of Zeruiah there Joab and Abishai and Asahel and Asahel was as

LXXXII 1 The psalmist having exhorted the judges 5 and reproved their negligence 8 prayeth God to judge ¶ A psalm ‖ Or for Asaph of Asaph GOd standeth in the congregation of the mighty he judgeth among the gods 2 How long will ye judge unjustly and * Deut. 1.17 accept the persons of the wicked Selah 3 †Heb. CIII 1 An exhortation to bless God for his mercy 15 and for the constancy thereof ¶ A psalm of David BLess the LORD O my soul and all that is within me bless his holy name 2 Bless the LORD O my soul and forget not all his benefits 3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities who healeth all thy diseases 4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction who crowneth thee with loving kindness and tender mercies 5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things so that thy youth is renewed like the eagles 6 The LORD executeth righteousness and judgement for all that are oppressed 7 He made known his ways unto Moses his acts unto the children of Israel 8 * Exod 34.6 7. XXVII 1 The care of God over his vineyard 7 His chastisements differ from judgements 12 The Church of Jews and Gentiles IN that day the LORD with his fore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the ‖ Or crossing like a bar piercing serpent even leviathan that crooked serpent and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea 2 In that day sing ye unto her A vineyard of red wine 3 I the LORD do keep it I will water it every moment lest any hurt it I will keep it night and day 4 Fury is not in me who would set the briers and thorns against me in battel I would ‖ Or march against go through them I would burn them together 5 Or let him take hold of my strength that he may make peace with me and he shall make peace with me 6 He shall cause them that come of Jacob to take root Israel shall blossom and bud and fill the face of the world with fruit 7 ¶ Hath he smitten him †Heb. according to the sâ—oâ—e of those as he smote those that smote him or is he slain according to the slaughter of them that are slain by him 8 In measure ‖ Or. when thou sendest it forth when it shooteth forth thou wilt debate with it ‖ Or when he removeth it he stayeth his rough wind in the day of the east-wind 9 By this therefore shall the iniquity of Jacob be purged and this is all the fruit to take away his sin when he maketh all the stones of the altar as chalk-stones that are beaten in sunder the groves and ‖ Or 〈◊〉 images images shall not stand up 10 Yet the defenced city shall be desolate and the habitation forsaken and left like a wilderness there shall the calf feed and there shall he lie down and consume the branches thereof 11 When the boughs thereof are withered they shall be broken off the women come and set them on fire for it is a people of no understanding therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them and he that formed them will shew them no favour 12 ¶ And it shall come to pass in that day that the LORD shall beat off from the chanel of the river unto the stream of Egypt and ye shall be gathered one by one O ye children of Israel 13 And it shall come to pass in that day that the great trumpet shall be blown and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria and the out casts in the land of Egypt and shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem CHAP. XXVIII 1 The prophet threatneth Ephraim for their pride and drunkenness 5 The residue shall be advanced in the kingdom of Christ 7 He rebuketh their errour 9 their untowardness to learn 14 and their security 16 Christ the sure foundationis promised 18 Their security shall be tried 23 They are incited to the consideration of Gods discreet providence WO to the crown of pride to the drunkards of Ephraim whose glorious beauty is a sading stower which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are †Heb. broken overcome with wine 2 Behold the Lord hath a mighty and strong one which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm as a floud of mighty waters overflowing shall cast down to the earth with the hand 3 The crown of pride the drunkards of Ephraim shall be troden †Heb. with feet under feet 4 And the glorious beauty which is on the head of the fat valley shall be a fading flower and as the hasty fruit before the summer which when he that looketh upon it seeth it while it is yet in his hand he †Heb. swalloweth eateth it up 5 ¶ In that day shall the LORD of hosts be for a crown of glory and for a diadem of beauty unto the residue of his people 6 And for a spirit of judgement to him that sitteth in judgement and for strength to them that turn the battel to the gate 7 ¶ But they also have erred through wine and through strong drink are out of the way the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink they are swallowed up of wine they are out of the way through strong drink they err in vision they stumble in judgement 8 For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness so that there is no place clean 9 ¶ Whom shall he teach knowledge and whom shall he make to understand †Heb. the bearing doctrine them that are weaned from the milk and drawn from the breasts 10 For precept ‖ Or hath been must be upon precept precept upon precept line upon line line upon line here a little and there a little 11 For with †Heb. stammerings of lips * 1 Cor. 14.21 stammering lips and another tongue ‖ Or he hath spoken will he speak to this people 12 To whom he said This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest and this is the refreshing yet they would not hear 13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept precept upon precept line upon line line upon line here a little and there a little that they might go and fall backward and be broken and snared and taken 14 ¶ Wherefore hear the word of the LORD ye scornful men that rule this people which is in Jerusalem 15 Because ye have said We have made a covenant with death and with hell are we at agreement when the overflowing scourge shall pass through it shall not come unto us for we have made lies our refuge and under falihood have we hid our selves 16 ¶ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD Behold I lay in Zion for a foundation * Psal 118.22 Matth. 21.42 Act. 4.11 Rom. 9.33 10.11 1 Pet 2.6 7 8. a stone a tried stone a precious corner stone a sure foundation he that believeth shall not make haste 17 Judgement also will I lay to the line and righteousness to the plummet and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies and the waters shall overflow the hiding place 18 ¶ And you covenant with death shall be disanulled and your agreement with hell shall not stand when the overflowing scourge shall pass through 〈◊〉 ye shall be †Heb. a treaâ—ing down to it troden down by it 19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you for morning by morning shall it pass over by day and by night and it shall be a vexation onely ‖ Or when be shall make you to understand doctrine to understand the

XIX 1Vnder the type of breaking a potters vessel is foreshewed the desolation of the Jews for their sins THus saith the LORD Go and get a potters earthen bottle and take of the ancients of the people and of the ancients of the priests 2 And go forth unto the valley of the son of Hinnom which is by the entry of †Heb. the sun-gate the east-gate and proclaim there the words that I shall tell thee 3. And say Hear ye the word of the LORD O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Behold I will bring evil upon this place the which whosoever heareth his ears shall * 1 Sam. 3.11 tingle 4 Because they have forsaken me and have estranged this place and have burnt incense in it unto other gods whom neither they nor their fathers have known nor the kings of Judah and have filled this place with the bloud of innocents 5 They have built also the high places of Baal to burn their sons with fire for burnt-offerings unto Baal * Ch. 7.31 32. which I commanded not nor spake it neither came it into my minde 6 Therefore behold the days come saith the LORD that this place shall no more be called Tophet nor the valley of the son of Hinnom but the valley of slaughter 7 And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies and by the hands of them that seek their lives and their * Ch. 7.33 and 16.4 carcases will I give to be meat for the fowls of the heaven and for the beasts of the earth 8 And I will make this city * Ch. 18.16 and 49.13 and 50.13 desolate and an hissing every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof 9 And I will cause them to eat the * Lev. 26.29 Deu. 28.53 Lam. 4.10 flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend in the siege and straitness wherewith their enemies and they that seek their lives shall straiten them 10 Then shalt thou break the bottle in the sight of the men that go with thee 11 And shalt say unto them Thus saith the LORD of hosts Even so will I break this people and this city as one breaketh a potters vessel that cannot †Heb. be healed be made whose again and they shall * Ch. 7.32 bury them in Tophet till there be no place to bury 12 Thus will I do unto this place saith the LORD and to the inhabitants thereof and even make this city as Tophet 13 And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah shall be defiled as the place of Tophet because of all the houses upon whose * Ch. 32.29 roofs they have burnt incense unto all the host of heaven and have poured out drink-offerings unto other gods 14 Then came Jeremiah from Tophet whither the LORD had sent him to prophesie and he stood in the court of the LORDS house and said to all the people 15 Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Behold I will bring upon this city and upon all her towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it because they have hardned their necks that they might not hear my words CHAP. XX. 1 Pashur smiting Jeremiah receiveth a new name and a fearful doom 7 Jeremiah complaineth of contempt 10 of treachery 14 and of his birth NOw Pashur the son of * 1 Chr. 24.14 Immer the priest who was also chief governour in the house of the LORD heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things 2 Then Pashur smote Jeremiah the prophet and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin which was by the house of the LORD 3 And it came to pass on the morrow that Pashur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks Then said Jeremiah unto him The LORD hath not called thy name Pashur but ‖ That is Fear
utterly ‖ Or abolished rooted out 11 Who then should make more mourning then she that hath lost so great a multitude and not thou which art sorry but for one 12 But if thou sayest unto me My lamentation is not like the earths because I have lost the fruit of my womb which I brought forth with pains and bare with sorrows 13 ‖ But the earth after the manner of the earth whereinto the present multitude is gone again as it came out But the earth not so for the multitude present in it according to the course of the earth is gone as it came 14 Then say I unto thee Like as thou hast brought forth with labour even so the earth also hath given her fruit namely man ever since the beginning unto him that made her 15 Now therefore keep thy sorrow to thy self and bear with a good courage that which hath be faln thee 16 For it thou shalt acknowledge the determination of God to be just thou shalt both receive thy son in time and shalt be commended amongst women 17 Go thy way then into the city to thine husband 18 And she said unto me That will I not do I will not go into the city but here will I die 19 So I proceeded to speak further unto her and said 20 Do not so but be counselled by me for how many are the adversities of Sion be comforted in regard of the sorrow of Jerusalem 21 For thou seest that our sanctuary is said waste our altar broken down our temple destroyed 22 Our psaltery is laid on the ground our song is put to silence our rejoycing is at an end the light of our candlestick is put out the ark of our covenant is spoiled our holy things are defiled and the name that is called upon us is almost profaned our children are put to shame our priests are burnt our Levites are gone into captivity our virgins are defiled and our wives ravished our righteous men carried away our little ones destroyed our young men are brought in bondage and our strong men are become weak 23 And which is the greatest of all the seal of Sion hath now lost her honour for she is delivered into the hands of them that hate us 24 And therefore shake off thy great heaviness and put away the multitude of sorrows that the Mighty may be merciful unto thee again and the Highest shall give thee rest and ease from thy labour 25 And it came to pass while I was talking with her behold her face upon a sudden shined exceedingly and her countenance glistered so that I was afraid of her and mused what it might be 26 And behold suddenly she made a great cry very fearful so that the earth shook at the noise of the woman 27 And I looked and behold the woman appeared unto me no more but there was a city builded and a large place shewed it self from the foundations then was I afraid and cried with a loud voice and said 28 Where is * Ch. 4.1 Uriel the angel who came unto me at the first for he hath caused me to fall ‖ Or into the multitude in a trance into many trances and mine end is turned into corruption and my prayer to rebuke 29 And as I was speaking these words behold he came unto me and looked upon me 30 And so I say as one that had been dead and mine understanding was taken from me and he took me by the right hand and comforted me and set me upon my feet and said unto me 31 What aileth thee and why art thou so disquieted and why is thine understanding troubled and the thoughts of thine heart 32 And I said Because thou hast forsaken me and yet I did according to thy * Chap 5.20 words and I went into the field and so I have seen and yet see that I am not able to express 33 And he said unto me Stand up manfully and I will advise thee 34 Then said I Speak on my lord in me onely forsake me not lest I die frustrate of my hope 35 For I have seen that I knew not and hear that I do not know 36 Or is my sense deceived or my soul in a dream 37 Now therefore I beseech thee that thou wilt shew thy servant of this ‖ Or trance vision 38 He answered me then and said Hear me and I shall inform thee and tell thee wherefore thou art afraid for the Highest will reveal many secret things unto thee 39 He hath seen that thy ‖ Or purpose way is right for that thou sorrowest continually for thy people and makest great lamentation for Sion 40 This therefore is the meaning of the vision which thou lately sawest 41 Thou sawest a woman mourning and thou beganst to comfort her 42 But now seest thou the likeness of the woman no more but there appeared unto thee a city builded 43 And whereas she told thee of the death of her son this is the ‖ Or interpretation solution 44 This woman whom thou sawest is Sion and whereas she said unto thee even she whom thou seest as a city builded 45 Whereas I say she said unto thee that she hath been thirty years barren those are the thirty years wherein there was no offering made in her 46 But after thirty years Solomon builded the city and offered offerings and then bare the barren a son 47 And whereas she told thee that she nourished him with labour that was the dwelling in Jerusalem 48 But whereas she said unto thee That my son coming into his marriage-chamber hapned to have a fall and died this was the destruction that came to Jerusalem 49 And behold thou sawest her likeness and because she mourned for her son thou beganst to comfort her and of these things which have chanced these are to be opened unto thee 50 For now the most High seeth that thou art grieved unfeignedly and sufferest from thy whole heart for her so hath he shewed thee the brightness of her glory and the comeliness of her beauty 51 And therefore I bade thee remain in the field where no house was builded 52 For I knew that the Highest would shew this unto thee 53 Therefore I commanded thee to go into the field where no foundation of any building was 54 For in the place wherein the Highest beginneth to shew his city there can no mans building be able to stand 55 And therefore sear not let not thine heart he affrighted but go thy way in and see the beauty and greatness of the building as much as thine eyes be able to see 56 And then shalt thou hear as much as thine ears may comprehend 57 For thou art blessed above many other and ‖ Or at called to be with c. art called with the Highest and so are but few 58 But to morrow at night thou shalt remain here 59 And so shall the Highest shew thee visions of the ‖ Or
that light being led by the hand of them that were with me I came into Damascus 12 And one Ananias a devout man according to the law having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there 13 Came unto me and stood and said unto me Brother Saul receive thy sight And the same hour I looked up upon him 14 And he said The God of our fathers hath chosen thee that thou shouldest know his will and see that just one and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth 15 For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard 16 And now why tarriest thou arise and be baptized and wash away thy sins calling on the name of the Lord. 17 And it came to pass that when I was come again to Jerusalem even while I prayed in the temple I was in a trance 18 And saw him laying unto me Make haste and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me 19 And I said Lord they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that beleeved on thee 20 * Chap. 7.58 And when the bloud of thy martyr Stephen was shed I also was standing by and consenting unto his death and kept the raiment of them that slew him 21 And he said unto me Depart for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles 22 And they gave him audience unto this word and then lift up their voices and said Away with such a fellow from the earth for it is not sit that he should live 23 And as they cried out and cast off their clothes and threw dust into the air 24 The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle and bade that he should be examined by scourging that he might know wherefore they cried so against him 25 And as they bound him with thongs Paul said unto the centurion that stood by Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman and uncondemned 26 When the centurion heard that he went and told the chief captain saying Take heed what thou doest for this man is a Roman 27 Then the chief captain came and said unto him Tell me art thou a Roman He said Yea. 28 And the chief captain answered With a great sum obtained I this freedom And Paul said But I was free-born 29 Then straightway they departed from him which should have ‖ Or tortured him examined him and the chief captain also was afraid after he knew that he was a Roman and because he had bound him 30 On the morrow because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews he loosed him from his hands and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear and brought Paul down and set him before them CHAP. XXIII 3 As Paul pleadeth his cause 2 Ananias commandeth them to smite him 7 Dissension among his accusers 11 God encourageth him 14 The Jews laying wait for Paul 20 is declared unto the chief captain 27 He sendeth him to Felix the governour ANd Paul earnestly beholding the council said Men and brethren I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day 2 And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth 3 Then said Paul unto him God shall smite thee thou whited wall for fittest thou to judge me after the law and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law 4 And they that stood by said Revilest thou Gods high priest 5 Then said Paul I wilt not brethren that he was the high priest For it is written * Exod. 22.28 Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people 6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees he cried out in the council Men and brethren * Phil. 3.5 I am a Pharisee the son of a Pharisee * Ch. 24.21 of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question 7 And when he had so said There arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees and the multitude was divided 8 * Mat. 22.23 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection neither angel nor spirit but the Pharisees confess both 9 And there arose a great cry and the scripes that were of the Pharisees part arose and strove saying We finde no evil in this man but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him let us not fight against God 10 And when there arose a great dissension the chief captain fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them commanded the souldiers to go down and to take him by force from among them and to bring him into the castle 11 And the night following the Lord stood by him and said Be of good cheer Paul for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem so must thou bear witness also at Rome 12 And when it was day certain of the Jews banded together and bound themselves ‖ Or with an oath of execration under a curse saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul 13 And they were more then fourty which had made this conspiracy 14 And they came to the chief priests and elders and said We have bound our selves under a great curse that we will eat nothing till we have slain Paul 15 Now therefore ye with the council signifie to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to morrow as though ye would enquire something more perfectly concerning him and we or ever he come near are ready to kill him 16 And when Pauls sisters son heard of their lying in wait he went and entred into the castle and told Paul 17 Then Paul called one of the centurions unto him and said Bring this young man unto the chief captain for he hath a certain thing to tell him 18 So he took him and brought him to the chief captain and said Paul the prisoner called me unto him and prayed me to bring this young man unto thee who hath something to say unto thee 19 Then the chief captain took him by the hand and went with him aside privately and asked him What is that thou hast to tell me 20 And he said the Jews have agreed to desire thee that thou wouldest bring down Paul to morrow into the council as though they would enquire somewhat of him more perfectly 21 But do not thou yeeld unto them for there lie in wait for him of them mo then fourty men which have bound themselves with an oath that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him and now are they ready looking for a promise from thee 22 So the chief captain then let the young man depart and charged him See thou tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me 23 And he called unto him two centurions saying Make ready two hundred souldiers
end the promise might be sure to all the seed not to that onely which is of the law but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham who is the father of us all 17 As it is written * Gen. 27.5 I have made thee a father of many nations ‖ Or like unto him before him whom he beleeved even God who quickneth the dead and calleth those things which be not as though they were 18 Who against hope beleeved in hope that he might become the father of many nations according to that which was spoken * Gen. 15.5 So shall thy seed be 19 And being not weak in faith he considered not his own body now dead when he was about an hundred year old neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb 20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief but was strong in faith giving glory to God 21 And being fully perswaded that what he had promised he was able also to perform 22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness 23 Now it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him 24 But for us also to whom it shall be imputed it we beleeve on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead 25 Who was delivered for our offences and was raised again for our justification CHAP. V. 1 Being justified by faith we have peace with God 2 and joy in our hope 8 that sith we were reconciled by his bloud when we were enemies 10 we shall much more be saved being reconciled 12 As sin and death came by Adam 17 so much more righteousness and life by Jesus Christ 20 Where sin abounded grace did superabound THerefore being justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ 2 * Eph. 2.18 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand and rejoyce in hope of the glory of God 3 And not onely so but we glory in tribulations also * James 1.3 knowing that tribulation worketh patience 4 And patience experience and experience hope 5 And hope maketh not ashamed because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the holy Ghost which is given unto us 6 For when we were yet without strength ‖ Or according to the time in due time Christ died for the ungodly 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die 8 But God commendeth his love towards us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us 9 Muâ—h more then being now justified by his bloud we shall be saved from wrath through him 10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son much more being reconciled we shall be saved by his life 11 And not onely so but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ by whom we have now received the atonement 12 Wherefore as by one man sin entred into the world and death by sin and so death passed upon all men ‖ Or in whom for that all have sinned 13 For until the saw sin was in the world but sin is not imputed when there is no law 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adams transgression who is the figure of him that was to come 15 But not as the offence so also is the free gift For if through the offence of one many be dead much more the grace of God and the gift by grace which is by one man Jesus Christ hath abounded unto many 16 And not as it was by one that sinned so is the gift for the judgement was by one to condemnation but the free gift is of many offences unto justification 17 For if ‖ Or by one offence by one mans offence death reigned by one much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one Jesus Christ 18 Therefore as ‖ Or by one offence by the offence of one judgement came upon all men to condemnation even so ‖ Or by one righteousness by the rigiteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life 19 For as by one mans disobedience many were made sinners so by the obedience of one shall many he made righteous 20 Moreover the law entred that the offence might abound But where sin abounded grace did much more abound 21 That as sin hath reigned unto death even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord. CHAP. VI. 1 We may not live in sin 2 for we are dead unto it 3 as appeareth by our baptism 12 Let not sin reign any more 18 because we have yeelded our selves to the service of righteousness 23 and for that death is the wages of sin WHat shall we say then Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound 2 God forbid how shall we that are dead to sin live any longer therein 3 Know ye not that * Gal. 3.27 so many of us as ‖ Or art were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death 4 Therefore we are * Col. 2.12 buried with him by baptism into death that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father even so we also should walk in newness of life 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection 6 Knowing this that our old man is crucified with him that the body of sin might be destroyed that henceforth we should not serve sin 7 For he that is dead is †Gr. justified freed from sin 8 Now if we be dead with Christ we beleeve that we shall also live with him 9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more death hath no more dominion over him 10 For in that he died he died unto sin once but in that he liveth he liveth unto God 11 Likewise reckon ye also your selves to be dead indeed unto sin but a live unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof 13 Neither yeeld ye your members as †Gr. arms or weapons instruments of unrighteousness unto sin but yeeld your selves unto God as those that are a live from the dead and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you for ye are not under the law but under grace 15 What then shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace God forbid 16 Know ye not that * Joh. 8.34 2 Pet. 2.19 to whom ye yeeld your selves servants to obey his servants ye are to whom ye obey whether of sin
Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of devils ye cannot be partakers of the Lords table and of the table of devils 22 Do we provoke the Lord to jealousie are we stronger then he 23 All things are lawful for me but all things are not expedient all things are lawful for me but all things edifie not 24 Let no man seek his own but every man anothers wealth 25 Whatsoever is sold in the shambles that eat asking no question for conscience sake 26 For * Deut. 10.14 Psal 24.1 the earth is the Lords and the fulness thereof 27 If any of them that beleeve not bid you to a feast and ye be disposed to go whatsoever is set before you eat asking no question for conscience sake 28 But if any man say unto you This is offered in sacrifice unto idols eat not for his sake that shewed it and for conscience sake For * Deut. 10.14 Psal 24.1 the earth is the Lords and the fulness thereof 29 Conscience I say not thine own but of the others for why is my liberty judged of another mans conscience 30 For if I by ‖ Or thanksgiving grace be a partaker why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks 31 * Col. 3.17 Whether therefore ye eat or drink or whatsoever ye do do all to the glory of God 32 * 2 Cor. 6.3 Give none offence neither to the Jews nor to the †Gr. XI 1 He reproveth them because in holy assemblies 4 their men prayed with their heads covered and 6 women with their heads uncovered 17 and because generally their meetings were not for the better but for the worse as 21 namely in profaning with their own feasts the Lords supper 23 Lastly he calleth them to the first institution thereof BE ye followers of me even as I also am of Christ 2 Now I praise you brethren that you remember me in all things and keep the ‖ Or traditions ordinances as I delivered them to you 3 But I would have you know that * Eph. 5 2â— the head of every man is Christ and the head of the woman is the man and the head of Christ is God 4 Every man praying or prophesying having his head covered dishonoureth his head 5 But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head for that is even all one as if she were shaven 6 For if the woman be not covered let her also be shorn but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven let her be covered 7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head forasmuch as * Gen. 1 2â— he is the image and glory of God but the woman is the glory of the man 8 For the man is not of the woman but the woman of the man 9 * Gen. 2.23 Neither was the man created for the woman but the woman for the man 10 For this cause ought the woman to have ‖ That is a covering in signe that she is under the power of her husband power on her head because of the angels 11 Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman neither the woman without the man in the Lord. 12 For as the woman is of the man even so is the man also by the woman but all things of God 13 Judge in yourselves is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered 14 Doth not even nature it self teach you that if a man have long hair it is a shame unto him 15 But if a woman have long hair it is a glory to her for her hair is given her for a ‖ Or vail covering 16 But if any man seem to be contentious we have no such custom neither the churches of God 17 Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not that you come together not for the better but for the worse 18 For first of all when ye come together in the church I hear that there be ‖ Or. schisms divisions among you and I partly beleeve it 19 For there must be also ‖ Or sectâ— heresies among you that they which are approved may be made manifest among you 20 When ye come together therefore into one place ‖ Or ye cannot eat this is not to eat the Lords supper 21 For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper and one is hungry and another is drunken 22 What have ye not houses to eat and to drink in or despise ye the church of God and shame ‖ Or them that are poor them that have not What shall I say to you shall I praise you in this I praise you not 23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread 24 * Matth. 26.26 Mark 13.22 Luke â—2 19 And when he had given thanks he brake it and said Take eat this is my body which is broken for you this do ‖ Or for a remembrance in remembrance of me 25 After the same manner also he took the cup when he had supped saying This cup is the new testament in my bloud this do ye as oft as ye drink it in remembrance of me 26 For as often as ye eat this bread and drink this cup ‖ Or shew ye ye do shew the Lords death till he come 27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread and drink this cup of the Lord unworthily shall be guilty of the body bloud of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself and so let him eat of that bread and drink of that cup. 29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily eateth and drinketh ‖ Or judgement damnation to himself not discerning the Lords body 30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you and many sleep 31 For if we would judge our selves we should not be judged 32 But when we are judged we are chastened of the Lord that we should not be condemned with the world 33 Wherefore my brethren when ye come together to eat tarry one for another 34 And if any man hunger let him eat at home that ye come not together unto ‖ Or judgement condemnation And the rest will I set in order when I come CHAP. XII 1 Spiritual gifts 4 are divers 7 yet all to profit withal 8 and to that end are diversly bestowed 12 that by the like proportion as the members of a natural body tend all to the 16 mutual decency 22 service and 26 succour of the same body 27 so we should do one for another to make up the mystical body of Christ NOw concerning spiritual gifts brethren I would not

III. 1 Christ is more worthy then Moses 7 therefore if we beleeve not in him we shall be more worthy punishment then hard-hearted Israel WHerefore holy brethren partakers of the heavenly calling consider the Apostle and high Priest of our profession Christ Jesus 2 Who was faithful to him that †Gr. made 1 Sam. 12.6 appointed him as also * Num. 12.7 Moses was faithful in all his house 3 For this man was counted worthy of more glory then Moses in as much as he who hath builded the house hath more honour then the house 4 For every house is builded by some man but he that built all things is God 5 And Moses verily was faithful in all his house as a servant for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after 6 But Christ as a Son over his own house whose house are we if we hold fast the confidence the rejoycing of the hope firm unto the end 7 Wherefore as the holy Ghost saith * Psal 95.7 Chap. 4.7 To day if ye will hear his voice 8 Harden not your hearts as in the provocation in the day of temptation in the wilderness 9 When your fathers tempted me proved me and saw my works fourty years 10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation and said They do alway err in their heart and they have not known my ways 11 So I sware in my wrath †Gr. If they shall enter They shall not enter into my rest 12 Take heed brethren lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God 13 But exhort one another daily while it is called To day lest any of you be hardned through the deceitfulness of sin 14 For we are made partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence sted fast unto the end 15 While it is said To day if ye will hear his voice harden not your hearts as in the provocation 16 For some when they had heard did provoke howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses 17 But with whom was he grieved fourty years was it not with them that had sinned * Num. 14.29 c. whose carcases fell in the wilderness 18 And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest but to them that beleeved not 19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief CHAP. IV. 1 The rest of Christians is attained by faith 12 The power of Gods word 14 By our high priest Jesus the Son of God subject to infirmities but not sin 16 we must and may go boldly to the throne of grace LEt us therefore fear lest a promise being left us of entring into his rest any of you should seem to come short of it 2 For unto us was the gospel preached as well as unto them but †Gr. the word of hearing the word preached did not profit them ‖ Or because they were not united by faith to not being mixed with faith in them that heard it 3 For we which have beleeved do enter into rest as he said * Psal 95.11 As I have sworn in my wrath If they shall enter into my rest although the works were finished from the foundation of the world 4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise * Gen. 2 2. And God did rest the seventh day from all his works 5 And in this place again If they shall enter into my rest 6
tabernacle which is called the holiest of all 4 Which had the golden censer and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold wherein was * Ex. 16.34 the golden pot that had manna and * Num. 17.16 Aâ—rons rod that budded and * Deut. 10.5 1 King 8.9 〈◊〉 Chr. 5.10 the tables of the covenant 5 And * Ex. 25.22 over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercy-seat of which we cannot now speak particularly 6 Now when these things were thus ordained the priests went always into the first tabernacle accomplishing the service of God 7 But into the second went the high priest alone * Ex. 30.10 â—ev 16. 〈◊〉 once every year not without bloud which he offered for himself and for the errours of the people 8 The holy Ghost this signifying that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest while as the first tabernacle was yet standing 9 Which was a sigure for the time then present in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices that could not make him that did the service perfect as pertaining to the conscience 10 Which stood onely in meats and drinks and divers washings and carnal ‖ Or vitor ceremonies ordinances imposed on them until the time of reformation 11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come by a greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands that is to say not of this building 12 Neither by the bloud of goats and calves but by his own bloud he entred in once into the holy place having obtained eternal redemption fâ—r us 13 For it * Lev. 1â— 14 the bloud of bulls and of goats and * 1 Num. 19.17 c. the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh 14 How much more shall the bloud of Christ who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without ‖ Or fault spot to God purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God 15 And for this cause he is the Mediatour of the new testament that by means of death for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance 16 For where a testament is there must also of necessity ‖ Or be brought in be the death of the testatour 17 For a testament is of force after men are dead otherwise it is of no strength at all whilest the testatour liveth 18 Whereupon neither the first testament was ‖ Or purified dedicated without bloud 19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law he took the bloud of calves and of goats with water and ‖ Or purple scarlet wooll and hyssop and sprinkled both the book and all the people 20 Saying * Eâ— 24.8 This is the bloud of the testament which God hath enjoyned unto you 21 Moreover he sprinkled likewise with bloud both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministery 22 And almost all things are by the law purged with bloud and without shedding of bloud is no remission 23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices then these 24 For Christ is not entred into the holy places made with hands which are the figures of the true but into heaven it self now * 1 Joh. 2.1 to appear in the presence of God for us 25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often as the high priest entreth into the holy place every year with bloud of others 26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself 27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die but after this the judgement 28 So * 1 Pet. 3.18 Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation CHAP. X. 1 The weakness of the law-sacrifices 10 The sacrifice of Christs body once offered 14 for ever hath taken away sins 19 An exhortation to hold fast the faith with patience and thanksgiving FOr the law having a shadow of good things to come and not the very image of the things can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins 3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year 4 For it is not possible that the bloud of bulls and of goats should take away sins 5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world he saith * Psal 10.6 c. Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not but a body ‖ Or thou â—â—st fitted me hast thou prepared me 6 In burnt-offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure 7 Then said I Lo I come In the volume of the book it is written of me to do thy will O God 8 Above when he said Sacrifice and offering and barnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not neither hadst pleasure therein which are offered by the law 9 Then said he Lo I come to do thy will O God He taketh away the first that he may establish the second 10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all 11 And every priest standeth daily ministring and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices which can never take away sins 12 But this man after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever sat down on the right hand of God 13 From henceforth expecting * Psal 11â— 1. 1 Cor. 15.25 Chap. 1.13 till his enemies be made his footstool 14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified 15 Whereof the holy Ghost also is a witness to us for after that he had said before 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days saith the Lord I will * Jer. 31.33 put my laws into their hearts and in their minds will I write them 17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more 18 Now where remission of these is there is no more offering for sin 19 Having therefore brethren ‖ Or liberty boldness to enter into the holiest by the bloud of Jesus 20 By a new and living way which he hath ‖ Or new mâ—dâ— consecrated for us through the vail that is to say his flesh 21 And having an high priest over the house of God 22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and
old serpent called the devil and Satan which deceiveth the whole world he was cast out into the earth and his angels were cast out with him 10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven Now is come salvation and strength and the kingdom of our God and the power of his Christ for the accuser of our brethren is cast down which accused them before our God day and night 11 And they overcame him by the bloud of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony and they loved not their lives unto the death 12 Therefore rejoyce ye heavens and ye that dwell in them Wo to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea for the devil is come down unto you having great wrath because he knoweth that he hath but a short time 13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man childe 14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle that she might flie into the wilderness into her place where she is nourished for a time and times and half a time from the face of the serpent 15 And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood 16 And the earth helped the woman and the earth opened her mouth and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth 17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman and went to make war with the remnant of her seed which keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ CHAP. XIII 1 A beast riseth out of the sea with seven heads and ten borns to whom the dragon giveth his power 11 Another beast cometh up out of the earth 14 causeth an image to be made of the former beast 15 and that men should worship it 16 and receive his mark ANd I stood upon the sand of the sea and saw a beast rise up out of the sea having seven heads and ten horns and upon his horns ten crowns and upon his heads the ‖ Or names name of blasphemy 2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard and his feet were as the feet of a bear and his mouth as the mouth of a lion and the dragon gave him his power and his seat and great authority 3 And I saw one of his heads as it were †Gr slain wounded to death and his deadly wound was healed and all the world wondred after the beast 4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast and they worshipped the beast saying Who is like unto the beast who is able to make war with him 5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies and power was given unto him ‖ Or to make war to continue fourty and two moneths 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God to blaspheme his name and his tabernacle and them that dwell in heaven 7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints and to overcome them and power was given him over all kindreds and tongues and nations 8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world 9 If any man have an ear let him hear 10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity * Matth. 16.52 He that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword Here is the patience and the faith of the saints 11 And I behold another beast coming up out of the earth and he had two horns like a lamb and he spake as a dragon 12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast whose deadly wound was healed 13 And he doeth great wonders so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men 14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast saying to them that dwell on the earth that they should make an image to the beast which had the wound by a sword and did live 15 And he had power to give †Gr. treath life unto the image of the beast that the image of the beast should both speak and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed 16 And he causeth all both small and great rich and poor free and bond †Gr. to give to receive a mark in their right hand or in their foreheads 17 And that no man might buy or sell save he that had the mark or the name of the beast or the number of his name 18 Here is wisdom Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast for it is the number of a man and his number is six hundred threescore and six CHAP. XIV 1 The Lamb standing on mount Sion with his company 6 an angel preacheth the gospel 8 The fall of Babylon 15 The harvest of the world and putting in of the sickle 20 The vintage and winepress of the wrath of God ANd I looked and lo a Lamb stood on the mount Sion and with him an hundred fourty and four thousand having his Fathers name written in their foreheads 2 And I heard a voice from heaven as the voice of many waters and as the voice of a great thunder and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps 3 And they sung as it were a new song before the throne and before the four beasts and the elders and no man could learn that song but the hundred and fourty and four thousand which were redeemed from the earth 4 These are they which were not defiled with women for they are virgins these are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth these †Gr. were bought were redeemed from among men being the first-fruits unto God and to the Lamb. 5 And in their mouth was found no guile for they are without fault before the throne of God 6 And I saw another angel flie in the midst of heaven having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth and to every nation and kindred and tongue and people 7 Saying with a loud voice Fear God and give glory to him for the hour of his judgement is come * Psal 146.5.6 Act. 14.15 and worship him that made heaven and earth and the sea and the fountains of waters 8 And there followed another angel saying * Isa 21.9 Jer. 51.8 Chap. 18.2 Babylon is faln is faln that great city because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication 9 And the third angel followed them saying with a loud voice
49 The children of Israel give an inheritance to Joshua ANd the second lot came forth to Simeon even for the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families and their inheritance was within the inheritance of the children of Judah 2 And they had in their inheritance Beer-sheba and Sheba and Moladah 3 And Hazar-shual and Balah and Azem 4 And Eltolad and Bethul and Hormah 5 And Ziklag and Beth-marcaboth and Hazar-susah 6 And Beth-lebaoth and Sharuhen thirteen cities and their villages 7 Ain Remmon and Ether and Ashan four cities their villages 8 And all the villages that were round about these cities to Baalath-beer Ramath of the south This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families 9 Out of the portion of the children of Judah was the inheritance of the children of Simeon for the part of the children of Judah was too much for them therefore the children of Simeon had their inheritance within the inheritance of them 10 ¶ And the third lot came up for the children of Zebulun according to their families and the border of their inheritance was unto Sarid 11 And their border went up toward the sea and Maralah and reached to Dabasheth and reached to the river that is before Jokneam 12 And turned from Sarid east-ward toward the sun-rising unto the border of Chisloth-tabor and then goeth out to Daberath and goeth up to Japhia 13 And from thence passeth on along on the east to Gittah-hepher to Ittah-kazin and goeth out to Remmon ‖ Or whichtâ— drawn methoar to Neah 14 And the border compasseth it on the north-side to Hannathon and the out-goings thereof are in the valley of Jiphthah-el 15 And Kattath and Nahallal and Shimron and Idalah and Bethlehem twelve cities with their villages 16 This is the inheritance of the children of Zebulun according to their families these cities with their villages 17 ¶ And the fourth lot came out to Issachar for the children of Issachar according to their families 18 And their border was toward Jezreel and Chesulloth Shunem 19 And Hapharaim and Shihon and Anaharath 20 And Rabbith and Kishion and Abez 21 And Remeth and Engannim and En-haddah and Beth-pazzer 22 And the coast reacheth to Tabor and Shahazimah and Beth-shemesh and the out-goings of their border were at Jordan sixteen cities with their villages 23 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Issachar according to their families the cities and their villages 24 ¶ And the fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families 25 And their border was Helkath and Hali and Beten Achshaph 26 And Alammelech and Amad and Misheal and reacheth to Carmel west-ward and to Shihor-libnath 27 And turneth toward the sun-rising to Beth-dagon and reacheth to Zebulun and to the valley of Jiphthah-el toward the north-side of Beth-emek and Neiel and goeth out to Cabul on the left hand 28 And Hebron and Rehob and Hammon and Kanah even unto great Zidon 29 And then the coast turneth to Ramah and to the strong city †Heb. Tzor Tyre and the coast turneth to Hosah and the out-goings thereof are at the sea from the coast to Achzib 30 Ummah also and Aphek and Rehob twenty and two cities with their villages 31 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families these cities with their villages 32 ¶ The sixth lot came out to the children of Naphtali even for the children of Naphtali according to their families 33 And their coast was from Heleph from Allon to Zaanannim and Adami Nekeb and Jabneel unto Lakum and the out goings thereof were at Jordan 34 And then the coast turneth west-ward to Aznoth-tabor and goeth out from thence to Hukkok and reacheth to Zebulun on the south-side and reacheth to Asher on the west-side and to Judah upon Jordan toward the sun-rising 35 And the fenced cities are Ziddim Zer and Hammath Rakkath and Cinnereth 36 And Adamah and Ramah and Hazor 37 And Kedesh and Edrei and En-hazor 38 And Iron and Migdal-el Horem and Beth-anath and Beth-shemesh nineteen cities with their villages 39 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Naphtali according to their families the cities and their villages 40 ¶ And the seventh lot came out for the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families 41 And the coast of their inheritance was Zorah and Eshtaol and Ir-shemesh 42 And Shaalabbin and Ajalon and Jethlah 43 And Elon and Thimnathah and Ekron 44 And Eltekeh and Gibbethon and Baalath 45 And Jehud and Bene-berak and Gath-rimmon 46 And Me-jarkon and Rakkon with the border ‖ Or over against before ‖ Or Joppa Act. 9.36 Japho 47 And the coast of the children of Dan went out too little for them therefore the children of Dan went up to fight against Leshem and took it and smote it with the edge of the sword possessed it dwelt therein and called Leshem * Judg. 18 29. Dan after the name of Dan their father 48 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families these cities with their villages 49 ¶ When they had made an end of dividing the land for inheritance by their coasts the children of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun among them 50 According to the word of the LORD they gave him the city which he asked even * Chap. 24.30 Timnath-serah in mount Ephraim and he built the city and dwelt therein 51 * Numb 3â— 17 These are the inheritances which Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel divided for an inheritance by lot in Shiâ—oh before the LORD at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation so they made an end of dividing the countrey CHAP. XX. 1 God commandeth 7 and the children of Israel appoint the six cities of refuge THe LORD also spake unto Jeshua saying 2 Speak to the children of Israel saying * Ex. 21.13 Num. 35.6 11 14. Deut. 19.2 Appoint out for you cities of refuge whereof I spake unto you by the hand or Moses 3 That the slayer that killeth any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of bloud 4 And when he that doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entring of the gate of the city and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city they shall take him into the city unto them and give him a place that he may dwell among them 5 And if the avenger of bloud pursue after him then they shall not deliver the slayer up into his hand because he smote his neighbour unwittingly and hated him not before time 6 And he shall dwell in that city until he
stand before the congregation for judgement and * Numb 35.25 until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days then shall the slayer return and come unto his own city and unto his own house unto the city from whence he fled 7 ¶ And they †Heb. sanctified appointed Kedesh in Galilee in mount Naphtali and Shechem in mount Ephraim and Kirjath-arba which is Hebron in the mountain of Judah 8 And on the other side Jordan by Jericho east-ward they assigned * Deu. 4.43 â— Chron. 6. â—8 Bezer in the wilderness upon the plain out of the tribe of Reuben and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh 9 These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel and for the stranger that sojourneth among them that whosoever killeth any person at unawares might flee thither and not die by the hand of the avenger of bloud until he stood before the congregation CHAP. XXI 1 Eight and fourty cities given by lot out of the other tribes unto the Levitâ—s 43 God gave the land and rest to the Israelites according to his tromise THen came near the heads of the fathers of the Levites unto Eleazar the priest and unto Joshua the son of Nun and unto the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel 2 And they spake unto them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan saying * Nâ—mb â— â— The LORD commanded by the hand of Moses to give us cities to dwell in with the suburbs thereof for our cattel 3 And the children of Israel gave unto the Levites out of their inheritance at hte commandment of the LORD these cities their suburbs 4 And the lot came out for the families of the Kohathites and the children of Aaron the priest which were of the Levites had by lot out of the tribe of Judah and out of the tribe of Simeon and out of the tribe of Benjamin thirteen cities 5 And the rest of the children of Kohath had by lot out of the families of the tribe of Ephraim and out of the tribe of Dan and out of the half tribe of Manasseh ten cities 6 And the children of Gershon had by lot out of the families of the tribe of Issachar and out of the tribe Asher and out of the tribe of Naphtali and out of the half-tribe or Manasseh in Bashan thirteen cities 7 The children of Merari by their families had out of the tribe of Reuâ—en and out of the tribe of Gad and out of the tribe of Zebulun twelve cities 8 And the children of Israel gave by lot unto the Levites these cities with their suburbs as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses 9 ¶ And they gave out of the tribe of the children of Judah and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon these cities which are here †〈…〉 mentioned by name 10 Which the children of Aaron being of the families of the Kohathites who were of the children of Levi had for theirs was the first lot 11 And they gave them ‖ Or Kirjâ—th-arba the city of Arba the father of Anak which city is Hebron in the hill countrey of Judah with the suburbs thereof round about â—t 12 But * Chap. 14.14 1 Chron. â— â—6 the fields of the city and the villages thereof gave they to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for his possession 13 ¶ Thus they gave to the children of Aaron the priest Hebron with her suburbs to be a city of refuge for the slayer and Libnah with her suburbs 14 And Jattir with her suburbs and Eshtemoa with her suburbs 15 And Holon with her suburbs and Debir with her suburbs 16 And Ain with her suburbs and Juttah with her suburbs and Bethshemesh wâ—th her suburbs nine cities out of those two tribes 17 And out of the tribe of Benjamin Gibeon with her suburbs Geâ—â— with her suâ—urbs 18 Anatâ—oth with her suburbs and Almon with her suburbs four â—â—ties 19 All the â—ities of the châ—ldren of Aaron the priests were thirteen â—â—tâ—es with their suburbs 20 ¶ And the families of the children of Kohath the Levites which remained of the children of Kohath even they had the cities of their lot out of the tribe of Ephraim 21 For they gave them Shechem with her suburbs in mount Ephraim to be a city of refuge for the slayer and Gezer with her suburbs 22 And Kibzaim with her suburbs and Beth-horon with her suburbs four cities 23 And out of the tribe of Dan Eltekeh with her suburbs Gibbethon with her suburbs 24 Ajalon with her suburbs Gath-rimmon with her suburbs four cities 25 And out of the half-tribe of Manasseh Tanach with her suburbs and Gath-rimmon with her suburbs two cities 26 All the cities were ten with their suburbs for the families of the children of Kohath that remained 27 ¶ And unto the children of Gershon of the families of the Levites out of the other half-tribe of Manasseh they gave Golan in Bashan with her suburbs to be a city of refuge for the slayer and Beeshterah with her suburbs two cities 28 And out of the tribe of Issachar Kishon with her suburbs Dabareh with her suburbs 29 Jarmuth with her suburbs En-gannim with her suburbs four cities 30 And out of the tribe of Asher Mishal with her suburbs Abdon with her suburbs 31 Helkath with her suburbs and Rehob with her suburbs four citâ—es 32 And our of the tribe of Naphtali Kedesh in Galilee with her suburbs to be a city of refuge for the slayer and Hamoth dor wâ—th her suburbs and Kartan with her suburbs three cities 33 All the cities of the-Gershonites according to their families were thirteen cities with their suburbs 34 ¶ And unto the families of the children of Merari the rest of the Levites out of the tribe of Zebulun Jokneam with her suburbs and Kartan with her suburbs 35 Dimnah with her suburbs Nahalal with her suburbs four cities 36 And out of the tribe of Reuben Bezer with her suburbs and Jahazah with her suburbs 37 Kedemoth with her suburbs and Mephaath with her suburbs four cities 38 And out of the tribe of Gad Ramoth in Gilead with her suburbs to be a city of refuge for the slayer and Mahanaim with her suburbs 39 Heshbon with her suburbs Jazer with her suburbs four cities in all 40 So all the cities for the children of Merari by their families which were remaining of the families of the Levites were by their lot twelve cities 41 All the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of Israel were fourty and eight cities with their suburbs 42 These cities were every one with their suburbs round about them thus were all these cities 43 ¶ And the LORD gave unto Israel all the land which he sware to give unto their fathers and they possessed it and dwelt therein 44 And the LORD gave them rest round about
