vain_a leaven_n of_o humane_a folly_n and_o ambition_n to_o call_v upon_o god_n himself_o in_o a_o multiplicity_n of_o attribute_n which_o be_v neither_o pertinent_a to_o our_o purpose_n nor_o otherwise_o apt_a to_o raise_v those_o affection_n in_o our_o soul_n that_o be_v proper_a to_o the_o holy_a exercise_n we_o be_v about_o be_v a_o argument_n of_o our_o weakness_n and_o vanity_n rather_o than_o a_o instance_n of_o a_o reasonable_a and_o religious_a respect_n but_o to_o set_v up_o a_o poor_a humble_a woman_n in_o such_o a_o formal_a pageantry_n of_o majesty_n and_o glory_n to_o address_v to_o saint_n in_o heaven_n as_o if_o they_o value_v the_o little_a ceremony_n and_o title_n to_o which_o man_n on_o earth_n aspire_v this_o be_v at_o best_a to_o show_v a_o mind_n too_o the_o more_o dangerous_a by_o how_o much_o the_o more_o they_o encroach_v on_o the_o peculiar_a attribute_n of_o god_n and_o our_o bless_a saviour_n for_o indeed_o to_o who_o else_o can_v it_o belong_v to_o be_v esteem_v the_o help_n of_o christian_n the_o comforter_n of_o the_o afflict_a the_o refuge_n of_o sinner_n the_o gate_n of_o heaven_n the_o ark_n of_o the_o covenant_n the_o câ—â—se_n of_o our_o joy_n the_o seat_n of_o wisdom_n and_o mirror_n of_o justice_n but_o to_o he_o alone_o who_o be_v the_o author_n and_o finisher_n of_o our_o faith_n from_o who_o all_o help_n participation_n of_o he_o 2._o from_o this_o account_n of_o the_o design_n and_o end_v of_o this_o institution_n it_o follow_v in_o the_o next_o place_n what_o a_o abuse_n they_o have_v make_v of_o the_o impossibility_n of_o their_o be_v ever_o sure_a that_o their_o host_n be_v indeed_o consecrate_v as_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v or_o that_o if_o it_o be_v yet_o at_o least_o the_o accident_n of_o the_o bread_n and_o wine_n which_o be_v creature_n and_o yet_o make_v up_o a_o part_n of_o the_o sacrament_n be_v by_o consequence_n joint_a partaker_n of_o all_o their_o worship_n but_o alas_o what_o that_o our_o saviour_n christ_n indeed_o be_v not_o at_o all_o concern_v in_o it_o they_o pay_v their_o adoration_n to_o the_o inanimate_a creature_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n and_o commit_v a_o idolatry_n not_o much_o less_o gross_a in_o the_o opinion_n of_o some_o of_o their_o own_o writer_n if_o we_o be_v indeed_o in_o the_o right_n than_o those_o who_o fall_v down_o before_o a_o piece_n of_o red_a cloth_n and_o pay_v their_o adoration_n to_o a_o tile_n or_o a_o potsherd_n but_o 4._o if_o our_o saviour_n christ_n in_o our_o text_n plain_o command_v his_o apostle_n and_o in_o they_o all_o of_o we_o to_o do_v that_o in_o remembrance_n of_o he_o which_o he_o have_v there_o do_v before_o their_o eye_n if_o what_o he_o require_v in_o order_n to_o this_o commemoration_n be_v that_o we_o shall_v take_v bread_n and_o wine_n and_o bless_v and_o give_v and_o receive_v these_o in_o memory_n of_o his_o body_n which_o be_v give_v and_o of_o his_o blood_n which_o be_v shed_v for_o we_o it_o will_v then_o follow_v in_o the_o four_o place_n that_o those_o who_o do_v not_o do_v this_o have_v plain_o depart_v from_o our_o saviour_n institution_n and_o do_v not_o remember_v he_o as_o they_o be_v command_v to_o do_v and_o this_o alone_a be_v sufficient_a to_o confute_v that_o great_a corruption_n of_o the_o same_o church_n in_o communicate_v the_o people_n only_o in_o one_o kind_a and_o whatever_o pretence_n they_o may_v offer_v for_o their_o so_o do_v have_v they_o as_o just_a reason_n otherwise_o for_o alter_v the_o order_n of_o this_o sacrament_n as_o god_n know_v it_o be_v plain_a they_o have_v not_o any_o at_o all_o yet_o this_o will_v still_o remain_v a_o perpetual_a exception_n against_o it_o that_o our_o saviour_n here_o express_o command_v they_o to_o do_v this_o a_o untimely_a temporal_a death_n as_o other_o or_o last_o which_o be_v esteem_v by_o they_o no_o small_a curse_n that_o he_o shall_v die_v childless_a and_o have_v his_o name_n put_v out_o in_o israel_n this_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o denunciation_n be_v very_o severe_a and_o if_o the_o remark_n of_o a_o very_a learned_a 15_o rabbin_z be_v true_a almost_o particular_a to_o the_o thing_n in_o hand_n there_o be_v but_o two_o of_o all_o the_o affirmative_a precept_n to_o which_o god_n make_v this_o denunciation_n viz._n to_o he_o that_o neglect_v the_o first_o sacrament_n of_o circumcision_n and_o this_o second_o of_o the_o passover_n but_o perhaps_o it_o will_v here_o be_v say_v that_o this_o commination_n be_v to_o those_o that_o be_v clean_o and_o near_o at_o hand_n and_o yet_o neglect_v this_o holy_a institution_n and_o therefore_o ought_v not_o to_o be_v apply_v to_o they_o with_o reference_n to_o the_o bless_a sacrament_n which_o we_o be_v speak_v of_o who_o will_v glad_o receive_v it_o and_o have_v a_o very_a honourable_a remembrance_n in_o their_o heart_n of_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n but_o alas_o either_o they_o be_v not_o clean_o or_o be_v in_o a_o journey_n either_o they_o be_v not_o prepare_v or_o have_v not_o the_o leisure_n to_o come_v to_o this_o table_n it_o be_v true_a indeed_o god_n do_v here_o restrain_v the_o judgement_n i_o have_v mention_v to_o such_o as_o be_v clean_o and_o at_o or_o near_o to_o jerusalem_n but_o the_o rest_n be_v not_o therefore_o by_o any_o mean_v excuse_v and_o permit_v to_o neglect_v the_o partake_n of_o it_o they_o have_v time_n give_v they_o till_o the_o next_o month_n to_o cleanse_v themselves_o and_o to_o come_v up_o to_o jerusalem_n and_o if_o they_o neglect_v in_o the_o second_o month_n to_o keep_v the_o feast_n after_o have_v omit_v it_o in_o the_o first_o there_o be_v then_o no_o far_o provision_n for_o they_o but_o they_o fall_v under_o the_o curse_n of_o those_o who_o neglect_v altogether_o to_o eat_v of_o it_o and_o this_o therefore_o may_v serve_v for_o a_o useful_a admonition_n as_o well_o as_o full_a answer_n to_o the_o excuse_n of_o those_o who_o be_v still_o pretend_v they_o be_v not_o worthy_a to_o come_v to_o this_o sacrament_n or_o else_o have_v not_o time_n and_o leisure_n to_o prepare_v themselves_o for_o it_o if_o indeed_o this_o shall_v chance_v by_o any_o accident_n to_o hinder_v they_o at_o this_o time_n or_o on_o this_o occasion_n from_o receive_v of_o it_o they_o ought_v not_o therefore_o to_o disquiet_v themselves_o but_o to_o believe_v that_o in_o such_o a_o case_n our_o saviour_n christ_n will_v make_v the_o same_o allowance_n for_o this_o feast_n that_o god_n do_v for_o that_o other_o and_o permit_v they_o yet_o another_o month_n to_o remove_v the_o obstacle_n and_o prepare_v themselves_o to_o come_v to_o his_o table_n but_o if_o instead_o of_o do_v this_o they_o shall_v still_o go_v on_o to_o insist_v upon_o these_o vain_a pretence_n and_o live_v so_o as_o not_o to_o be_v worthy_a to_o receive_v the_o holy_a sacrament_n and_o continue_v to_o live_v so_o still_o without_o take_v any_o care_n to_o put_v themselves_o into_o a_o better_a state_n this_o will_v prove_v a_o aggravation_n of_o their_o sin_n not_o a_o lessen_v of_o it_o and_o their_o neglect_n will_v be_v but_o the_o more_o inexcusable_a for_o be_v ground_v on_o a_o reason_n so_o contrary_a not_o only_o to_o the_o design_n of_o this_o holy_a sacrament_n but_o of_o the_o whole_a christian_a religion_n but_o sixthly_a and_o to_o close_v all_o the_o command_n of_o our_o saviour_n in_o these_o word_n we_o have_v be_v so_o long_o consider_v will_v not_o only_o oblige_v we_o in_o the_o general_n sometime_o to_o remember_v his_o death_n by_o receive_v this_o holy_a sacrament_n but_o frequent_o and_o oftentimes_o so_o to_o do_v i_o have_v before_o observe_v that_o the_o word_n which_o we_o here_o render_v remembrance_n do_v not_o imply_v a_o bare_a memorial_n but_o a_o renew_v commemoration_n to_o teach_v we_o that_o we_o be_v often_o to_o refresh_v the_o memory_n of_o christ_n death_n in_o our_o mind_n by_o this_o sacred_a solemnity_n and_o to_o repeat_v again_o and_o again_o the_o remembrance_n of_o it_o and_o though_o it_o be_v pretty_a hard_a to_o say_v how_o often_o a_o man_n ought_v to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n yet_o it_o be_v plain_a he_o be_v not_o so_o zealous_a a_o christian_n as_o he_o shall_v be_v that_o very_o seldom_o or_o never_o do_v it_o we_o know_v that_o in_o the_o first_o age_n of_o christianity_n when_o devotion_n be_v quick_a and_o vigorous_a and_o man_n have_v the_o most_o sensible_a impression_n upon_o their_o mind_n of_o the_o love_n of_o our_o saviour_n in_o give_v himself_o to_o die_v for_o we_o that_o then_o they_o receive_v it_o ordinary_o every_o day_n insomuch_o that_o some_o of_o those_o father_n who_o then_o live_v have_v interpret_v this_o eucharistical_a bread_n to_o be_v that_o daily_a bread_n which_o our_o lord_n have_v teach_v we_o to_o pray_v for_o afterward_o as_o man_n zeal_n cool_v so_o do_v their_o frequent_a communicate_v decay_n in_o proportion_n with_o it_o at_o first_o it_o fall_v in_o some_o church_n to_o four_o in_o other_o to_o three_o time_n in_o the_o week_n and_o in_o a_o little_a while_n it_o come_v to_o be_v the_o distinctive_a devotion_n of_o the_o lord_n day_n and_o at_o last_o the_o necessary_a lest_o proportion_n establish_v be_v the_o three_o great_a feast_n of_o the_o year_n in_o which_o our_o church_n still_o oblige_v all_o her_o member_n to_o partake_v of_o it_o but_o as_o he_o who_o be_v in_o a_o pure_a and_o holy_a state_n can_v never_o receive_v it_o too_o often_o so_o certain_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n than_o which_o none_o will_v more_o advance_v our_o piety_n to_o labour_v as_o frequent_o as_o we_o can_v to_o fit_v ourselves_o for_o it_o and_o since_o it_o have_v please_v god_n to_o revive_v something_o of_o the_o primitive_a zeal_n among_o we_o as_o to_o this_o particular_a in_o bring_v our_o solemn_a communion_n to_o a_o monthly_a course_n beside_o other_o extraordinary_a occasion_n of_o it_o i_o do_v not_o see_v what_o better_a exhortation_n i_o can_v leave_v with_o you_o as_o to_o this_o matter_n than_o serious_o to_o advise_v and_o earnest_o beseech_v every_o one_o of_o you_o to_o examine_v and_o prepare_v yourselves_o then_o at_o least_o to_o join_v with_o your_o brethren_n in_o these_o holy_a return_n and_o not_o deprive_v your_o soul_n of_o the_o benefit_n which_o be_v thus_o gracious_o offer_v to_o you_o in_o this_o great_a and_o most_o useful_a remembrance_n this_o will_v indeed_o both_o best_a answer_n the_o design_n of_o our_o bless_a lord_n in_o the_o text_n and_o be_v the_o best_a application_n i_o can_v even_o wish_v you_o will_v make_v of_o my_o discourse_n upon_o it_o but_o then_o i_o must_v observe_v that_o i_o speak_v now_o by_o way_n of_o exhortation_n not_o as_o necessary_o require_v this_o in_o obedience_n to_o the_o command_n before_o we_o but_o as_o the_o improvement_n i_o desire_v if_o it_o be_v possible_a you_o may_v all_o
