scripture_n but_o he_o bring_v not_o one_o to_o this_o purpose_n and_o therefore_o i_o think_v it_o may_v be_v conclude_v that_o these_o several_a session_n of_o god_n for_o judgement_n be_v but_o a_o device_n of_o his_o own_o brain_n which_o have_v no_o real_a truth_n in_o it_o and_o thus_o by_o man_n device_n they_o strive_v to_o heal_v cover_n and_o confirm_v their_o erroneous_a opinion_n which_o i_o look_v upon_o as_o a_o great_a fault_n in_o a_o good_a man_n but_o notwithstanding_o those_o humane_a invention_n i_o be_o apt_a to_o conclude_v that_o if_o the_o good_a soul_n go_v to_o god_n for_o judgement_n in_o heaven_n that_o bad_a soul_n do_v also_o somewhat_o evident_o do_v the_o like_a solomon_n say_v the_o soul_n return_v to_o god_n who_o give_v it_o the_o soul_n return_v be_v word_n that_o intend_v indefinite_o and_o seem_v therefore_o equivalent_a to_o a_o universal_a and_o signify_v as_o much_o as_o if_o it_o have_v be_v say_v all_o soul_n return_v to_o god_n who_o give_v they_o and_o this_o sense_n of_o the_o word_n our_o author_n have_v late_o grant_v whence_o i_o conclude_v that_o as_o god_n say_v all_o soul_n be_v my_o which_o i_o think_v intend_v person_n so_o all_o soul_n be_v intend_v to_o return_v to_o god_n who_o give_v they_o as_o well_o and_o as_o much_o the_o bad_a as_o the_o good_a for_o any_o thing_n that_o i_o can_v perceive_v either_o in_o the_o word_n of_o the_o text_n or_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v true_a in_o our_o author_n discourse_n of_o it_o p._n 60._o he_o put_v a_o second_o objection_n against_o this_o opinion_n which_o i_o author_n to_o the_o trouble_v of_o defend_v his_o opinion_n against_o it_o in_o the_o close_a of_o this_o argument_n mr._n w._n ask_v what_o have_v the_o live_a god_n to_o do_v with_o dead_a spirit_n and_o i_o say_v so_o too_o and_o therefore_o grant_v that_o if_o the_o intelligent_a separate_a spirit_n of_o a_o man_n be_v dead_a it_o can_v with_o no_o propriety_n or_o truth_n be_v say_v to_o to_o fall_v upon_o they_o in_o the_o prosecution_n of_o their_o great_a duty_n the_o preach_a of_o the_o gospel_n encourage_v they_o not_o to_o sear_v what_o harm_v man_n can_v do_v unto_o they_o upon_o that_o account_n because_o man_n can_v only_o kill_v the_o body_n intend_v the_o person_n but_o be_v not_o able_a to_o kill_v the_o soul_n for_o lay_v any_o other_o sort_n of_o real_a can_v do_v no_o more_o harm_n after_o they_o have_v kill_v another_o way_n it_o seem_v next_o to_o a_o assertion_n that_o man_n soul_n live_v and_o subsist_v in_o a_o state_n of_o separation_n from_o their_o body_n i_o do_v not_o by_o the_o context_n or_o any_o other_o way_n conceive_v that_o our_o lord_n do_v speak_v or_o have_v any_o intent_n to_o speak_v of_o the_o state_n of_o man_n after_o death_n in_o this_o doctrine_n whence_o the_o word_n be_v not_o able_a to_o kill_v the_o soul_n in_o that_o prospect_n of_o intend_v to_o teach_v the_o state_n of_o man_n after_o death_n seem_v quite_o beside_o our_o lord_n mean_v in_o this_o doctrine_n and_o if_o not_o quite_o out_o of_o it_o yet_o very_o plain_o collateral_a to_o it_o and_o yet_o from_o this_o side-wind_n the_o maintainer_n of_o separate_a subsistence_n draw_v the_o strong_a proof_n which_o they_o can_v find_v for_o maintain_v their_o opinion_n of_o the_o separate_a subsistence_n i_o think_v that_o upon_o perusal_n of_o this_o argument_n it_o will_v appear_v the_o strength_n of_o this_o proof_n be_v much_o weaken_a and_o abate_v and_o will_v be_v find_v to_o be_v of_o much_o less_o force_n than_o it_o seem_v to_o have_v at_o the_o first_o read_v or_o hear_v thereof_o and_o in_o this_o state_n of_o debilitation_n i_o leave_v it_o to_o prosecute_v my_o observation_n upon_o mr._n w_n page_n as_o i_o do_v before_o p._n 64_o mr._n w._n pretend_v to_o take_v the_o dispute_v word_n as_o comment_n one_o upon_o another_o and_o say_v that_o by_o construction_n they_o may_v be_v make_v to_o intend_v one_o thing_n and_o i_o be_o ready_a to_o grant_v that_o by_o construction_n they_o may_v both_o of_o they_o be_v make_v to_o serve_v the_o mean_v of_o our_o lord_n in_o this_o doctrine_n but_o then_o in_o our_o collateral_a point_n which_o st._n luke_n do_v not_o meddle_v with_o there_o be_v a_o very_a great_a variance_n between_o these_o two_o expression_n for_o that_o the_o one_o prove_v strong_o the_o soul_n be_v separate_a subsistence_n and_o the_o other_o prove_v it_o not_o nor_o meddle_v with_o it_o at_o all_o which_o prove_v that_o our_o lord_n doctrine_n do_v not_o intend_v to_o speak_v of_o that_o point_n in_o this_o place_n and_o therefore_o our_o question_n thereupon_o be_v in_o what_o word_n our_o lord_n deliver_v this_o doctrine_n and_o the_o conclusion_n be_v that_o if_o he_o deliver_v this_o doctrine_n in_o the_o word_n of_o st._n matthew_n than_o they_o be_v a_o strong_a proof_n of_o the_o soul_n separate_a subsistence_n but_o if_o his_o doctrine_n be_v deliver_v in_o the_o word_n of_o st._n luke_n then_o there_o be_v no_o proof_n at_o all_o in_o it_o of_o the_o soul_n separate_a subsistence_n and_o i_o have_v before_o enough_o argue_v on_o the_o side_n of_o st._n luke_n and_o for_o the_o probability_n that_o his_o text_n set_v forth_o to_o we_o the_o very_a word_n wherein_o our_o lord_n deliver_v this_o doctrine_n mr._n w._n confess_v that_o luke_n express_v less_o than_o matthew_n but_o say_v he_o never_o mean_v less_o which_o i_o think_v intend_v that_o the_o mean_v of_o luke_n in_o his_o text_n be_v that_o those_o who_o kill_v the_o body_n be_v not_o able_a to_o kill_v the_o soul_n which_o mean_v do_v not_o at_o all_o appear_v in_o the_o word_n of_o luke_n text_n which_o do_v not_o say_v so_o and_o how_o then_o mr._n w._n shall_v come_v to_o know_v that_o he_o mean_v so_o i_o do_v not_o understand_v and_o therefore_o i_o reject_v this_o gloss_n upon_o that_o text_n as_o mr._n w'_v own_o invention_n or_o fiction_n the_o five_o that_o moses_n may_v not_o have_v die_v in_o the_o mount_n but_o may_v be_v translate_v or_o transport_v to_o heaven_n in_o person_n as_o enoch_n and_o elias_n have_v before_o be_v which_o i_o offer_v to_o prove_v by_o his_o appear_v with_o elias_n at_o mount_n taber_n it_o seem_v they_o appear_v both_o after_o a_o like_a manner_n and_o the_o one_o as_o much_o in_o person_n as_o the_o other_o mr._n w._n grant_v that_o elias_n do_v appear_v in_o person_n and_o arguendo_fw-la a_o simili_fw-la it_o appear_v most_o likely_a that_o moses_n do_v so_o too_o as_o to_o the_o text_n which_o say_v moses_n lord_n above_o those_o who_o live_v on_o earth_n in_o the_o lord_n and_o this_o will_v be_v contrary_a to_o the_o sense_n of_o all_o god_n people_n and_o special_o to_o the_o sense_n of_o such_o as_o administer_v comfort_n to_o die_a person_n from_o this_o topick_n by_o tell_v they_o that_o immediate_o after_o death_n their_o soul_n shall_v by_o angel_n be_v transport_v into_o heaven_n or_o paradise_n or_o abraham_n bosom_n or_o some_o such_o place_n where_o they_o shall_v not_o only_o be_v at_o rest_n but_o have_v present_a joy_n and_o happiness_n confer_v upon_o they_o and_o i_o long_a life_n upon_o earth_n although_o under_o a_o state_n of_o great_a persecution_n if_o they_o do_v not_o expect_v heavenly_a reward_n present_o upon_o the_o death_n of_o their_o person_n and_o he_o say_v you_o shall_v never_o persuade_v people_n to_o a_o content_a departure_n out_o of_o this_o world_n by_o tell_v they_o they_o shall_v present_o enjoy_v a_o bless_a rest_n in_o the_o lord_n soon_o as_o they_o be_v dead_a what_o need_v any_o other_o day_n of_o judgement_n will_v christ_n try_v man_n after_o sentence_n to_o this_o objection_n mr._n w._n say_v i_o have_v prove_v already_o direct_v viz._n that_o if_o god_n do_v declare_v to_o we_o his_o mind_n and_o intnet_n to_o have_v divers_a and_o different_a trial_n and_o judgement_n of_o man_n i_o be_o ready_a to_o submit_v to_o the_o belief_n thereof_o although_o i_o be_o not_o able_a to_o apprehend_v the_o congruity_n or_o reason_n thereof_o but_o mr._n w_n answer_n set_v out_o no_o proof_n at_o all_o of_o god_n design_n or_o meaning_n to_o pass_v such_o several_a trial_n and_o judgement_n upon_o man_n as_o he_o suppose_v nor_o do_v his_o whole_a book_n give_v we_o good_a proof_n thereof_o and_o himself_o do_v not_o require_v man_n to_o believe_v that_o god_n proceed_v in_o way_n not_o congruous_a to_o the_o reason_n of_o man_n except_o god_n do_v somewhere_o declare_v that_o he_o do_v or_o will_v do_v so_o whereas_o mr._n w._n have_v not_o otherways_o prove_v god_n will_v so_o to_o do_v then_o from_o his_o own_o exposition_n collection_n inference_n and_o conclusion_n which_o all_o seem_v to_o be_v the_o proper_a fruit_n of_o his_o own_o invention_n upon_o which_o the_o old_a rule_n must_v take_v hold_v posito_fw-la quolibet_fw-la sequitur_fw-la quidlibet_fw-la and_o so_o if_o we_o suffer_v he_o to_o lay_v the_o card_n he_o will_v always_o deal_v they_o to_o his_o own_o advantage_n but_o i_o have_v no_o inclination_n to_o bear_v with_o such_o deal_n and_o therefore_o do_v reject_v his_o answer_n to_o this_o objection_n as_o infirm_a and_o insufficient_a well_o but_o then_o say_v mr._n w._n if_o this_o answer_n will_v not_o satisfy_v you_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o the_o righteous_a knowledge_n or_o a_o reasonable_a inference_n from_o any_o text_n of_o scripture_n last_o he_o bid_v his_o opposer_n be_v silent_a lest_o god_n reprove_v they_o and_o have_v make_v this_o reply_n to_o his_o answer_n i_o be_o content_a to_o be_v silent_a and_o proceed_v no_o father_n thereupon_o but_o as_o to_o the_o incongruity_n charge_v by_o the_o objection_n upon_o mr._n w_n opinion_n i_o say_v that_o it_o seem_v very_o incongruous_a to_o my_o reason_n that_o god_n shall_v call_v man_n to_o a_o solemn_a trial_n at_o their_o death_n and_o there_o pass_v judgement_n and_o award_v execution_n award_n of_o execution_n on_o as_o before_o this_o seem_v a_o very_a unlikely_a proceed_v of_o god_n towards_o man_n and_o yet_o if_o mr._n w._n or_o any_o of_o his_o partaker_n have_v prove_v or_o can_v prove_v from_o any_o plain_a or_o clear_a text_n or_o text_n of_o scripture_n that_o god_n will_v use_v this_o course_n of_o proceed_v among_o man_n i_o be_o ready_a to_o submit_v my_o own_o reason_n and_o opinion_n thereunto_o but_o not_o to_o the_o many_o word_n or_o conjecture_n which_o mr._n w._n far_o offer_n in_o his_o answer_n to_o this_o objection_n we_o read_v mat._n 25._o our_o this_o place_n but_o in_o congruity_n of_o reason_n must_v have_v say_v brethren_n comfort_v yourselves_o against_o sorrow_n for_o your_o friend_n death_n and_o the_o fear_n of_o your_o own_o by_o so_o faint_a as_o that_o in_o such_o person_n there_o need_v no_o nutriment_n in_o a_o long_a time_n for_o restore_v the_o waste_n of_o blood_n in_o such_o person_n but_o in_o ordinary_a way_n of_o live_v our_o experience_n assure_v we_o that_o if_o the_o daily_a waste_n of_o blood_n be_v not_o supply_v by_o nourishment_n suitable_a to_o the_o consumption_n thereof_o the_o person_n must_v diminish_v in_o his_o strength_n and_o vigour_n and_o final_o perish_v and_o die_v for_o want_v of_o such_o sustenance_n as_o shall_v restore_v the_o stock_n of_o the_o waste_a blood_n and_o furnish_v turn_v to_o the_o other_o side_n and_o make_v application_n to_o that_o superfine_n yet_o material_a and_o unintelligent_a spirit_n which_o before_o have_v be_v describe_v we_o must_v find_v that_o there_o will_v be_v a_o true_a and_o real_a necessity_n of_o the_o three_o beforenamed_n natural_a incident_n for_o the_o support_n supply_v and_o continuance_n of_o its_o activity_n and_o of_o life_n its_o self_n so_o as_o by_o this_o hypothesis_n the_o phaenomena_n of_o nature_n in_o man_n be_v more_o clear_o answer_v and_o may_v be_v better_o solve_v than_o can_v be_v do_v by_o apply_v these_o natural_a incident_n to_o a_o separable_a intelligent_a and_o extraneous_a spirit_n in_o man_n and_o i_o therefore_o conclude_v it_o more_o probable_a that_o the_o spirit_n of_o life_n in_o man_n be_v rather_o material_a and_o unintelligent_a than_o that_o it_o be_v a_o intelligent_a and_o separable_a spirit_n such_o as_o mr._n w._n and_o his_o partaker_n maintain_v the_o same_o to_o be_v a_o second_o objection_n from_o nature_n against_o mr._n w_n opinion_n i_o raise_v from_o the_o further_a consideration_n of_o the_o humane_a person_n and_o more_o particular_o from_o the_o bodily_a organ_n thereof_o and_o say_v thereupon_o that_o god_n or_o nature_n have_v so_o frame_v and_o fit_v every_o one_o of_o they_o as_o they_o be_v wonderful_o apt_a for_o those_o office_n which_o they_o be_v intend_v to_o perform_v of_o which_o for_o example_n we_o may_v name_v the_o eye_n and_o tongue_n which_o be_v admirable_o frame_v and_o fit_v for_o their_o several_a office_n so_o as_o the_o spirit_n of_o life_n be_v by_o mean_n of_o these_o instrument_n able_a to_o perform_v such_o action_n as_o nature_n intend_v they_o for_o and_o yet_o the_o perfection_n or_o defect_n in_o those_o performance_n seem_v not_o so_o much_o to_o depend_v upon_o that_o spirit_n which_o inform_v and_o act_v they_o as_o upon_o the_o structure_n soundness_n and_o perfection_n of_o the_o organ_n themselves_o without_o such_o organ_n the_o man_n can_v neither_o see_v nor_o speak_v but_o when_o the_o organ_n be_v sound_a and_o perfect_a the_o owner_n can_v use_v they_o as_o perfect_o as_o any_o other_o can_v ordinary_o do_v but_o if_o there_o be_v any_o obstruction_n in_o the_o optic_a nerve_n or_o in_o those_o which_o act_n the_o tongue_n the_o spirit_n of_o life_n in_o the_o owner_n can_v resurrection_n and_o whether_o christ_n be_v rise_v or_o not_o rise_v yet_o separate_a soul_n will_v still_o have_v a_o subsistence_n and_o not_o be_v perish_v as_o here_o our_o apostle_n suppose_v they_o will_v be_v if_o the_o resurrection_n so_o preach_v to_o the_o corinthian_n be_v not_o true_a so_o as_o our_o apostle_n expression_n seem_v not_o well_o to_o agree_v with_o mr._n w_n opinion_n of_o the_o soul_n separate_a subsistence_n but_o it_o be_v at_o full_a agreement_n with_o the_o material_a opinion_n who_o maintain_v as_o st._n paul_n do_v that_o if_o there_o be_v no_o before_o that_o there_o be_v no_o mention_n in_o scripture_n of_o such_o expectation_n at_o or_o soon_o after_o the_o time_n of_o man_n death_n he_o give_v we_o here_o three_o of_o the_o most_o pregnant_a instance_n which_o he_o can_v find_v in_o scripture_n for_o prove_v that_o reward_n and_o punishment_n be_v bestow_v by_o god_n at_o the_o time_n of_o man_n death_n but_o the_o force_n of_o these_o instance_n have_v before_o be_v obstruct_v by_o those_o answer_n which_o have_v be_v several_o give_v they_o in_o their_o proper_a place_n i_o be_o not_o without_o some_o temptation_n of_o draw_v out_o of_o the_o scripture_n a_o catalogue_n of_o such_o text_n as_o do_v with_o great_a evidence_n and_o strength_n set_v forth_o and_o prove_v that_o the_o time_n of_o the_o resurrection_n
