Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar. 2 And the LORD appeared unto him and said Go not down into Egypt dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of 3 Sojourn in this land and I will be with thee and will bless thee for unto thee and unto thy seed * Chap. 13.15 15.18 I will give all these countreys and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father 4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven and will give unto thy seed all these countreys and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be * Chap. 12.3 22.18 blessed 5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge my commandments my statutes and my laws 6 ¶ And Isaac dwelt in Gerar. 7 And the men of the place asked him of his wife and he said She in my sister for he feared to say She is my wife lest said he the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah because she was â—air to look upon 8 And it came to pass when he had been there a long time that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window and saw and behold Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife 9 And Abimelech called Isaac and said Behold of a surety she is thy wife and how saidst thou She is my sister And Isaac said unto him Because I said Lest I die for her 10 And Abimelech said What is this thou hast done unto us one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us 11 And Abimelech charged all his people saying He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death 12 Then Isaac sowed in that land and †Heb. found received in the same year an hundred fold and the LORD blessed him 13 And the man waxed great and †Heb. went going went forward and grew until he became very great 14 For he had possession of flocks and possession of herds and great store of ‖ Or husbandry servants And the Philistines envied him 15 For all the wells which his fathers servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father the Philistines had stopped them and filled them with earth 16 And Abimelech said unto Isaac Go from us for thou art much mightier then we 17 ¶ And Isaac departed thence and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar and dwelt there 18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them 19 And Isaacs servants digged in the valley and found there a well of †Heb. livng springing water 20 And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaacs herdmen saying The water is ours and he called the name of the well ‖ That is contention Esek because they strove with him 21 And they digged another well and strove for that also and he called the name of it ‖ That is â—â—tred Sitnah 22 And he removed from thence and digged another well and for that they strove not and he called the name of it ‖ That is room Rehoboth and he said For now the LORD hath made room for us and we shall be fruitful in the land 23 And he went up from thence to Beer-sheba 24 And the LORD appeared unto him the same night and said I am the God of Abraham thy father fear not for I am with thee and will bless thee and multiply thy seed for my servant Abrahams sake 25 And he builded an altar there and called upon the name of the LORD and pitched his tent there there Isaacs servants digged a well 26 ¶ Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar and Ahuzzath one of his friends and Phichol the chief captain of his army 27 And Isaac said unto them Wherefore come ye to me seeing ye hate me and have sent me away from you 28 And they said †Heb. Seeing we saw We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee and we said Let there be now an oath betwixt us even betwixt us and thee and let us make a covenant with thee 29 †Heb. if thou shalt c. XXVIII 1 The prophet threatneth Ephraim for their pride and drunkenness 5 The residue shall be advanced in the kingdom of Christ 7 He rebuketh their errour 9 their untowardness to learn 14 and their security 16 Christ the sure foundationis promised 18 Their security shall be tried 23 They are incited to the consideration of Gods discreet providence WO to the crown of pride to the drunkards of Ephraim whose glorious beauty is a sading stower which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are †Heb. broken overcome with wine 2 Behold the Lord hath a mighty and strong one which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm as a floud of mighty waters overflowing shall cast down to the earth with the hand 3 The crown of pride the drunkards of Ephraim shall be troden †Heb. with feet under feet 4 And the glorious beauty which is on the head of the fat valley shall be a fading flower and as the hasty fruit before the summer which when he that looketh upon it seeth it while it is yet in his hand he †Heb. swalloweth eateth it up 5 ¶ In that day shall the LORD of hosts be for a crown of glory and for a diadem of beauty unto the residue of his people 6 And for a spirit of judgement to him that sitteth in judgement and for strength to them that turn the battel to the gate 7 ¶ But they also have erred through wine and through strong drink are out of the way the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink they are swallowed up of wine they are out of the way through strong drink they err in vision they stumble in judgement 8 For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness so that there is no place clean 9 ¶ Whom shall he teach knowledge and whom shall he make to understand †Heb. the bearing doctrine them that are weaned from the milk and drawn from the breasts 10 For precept ‖ Or hath been must be upon precept precept upon precept line upon line line upon line here a little and there a little 11 For with †Heb. stammerings of lips * 1 Cor. 14.21 stammering lips and another tongue ‖ Or he hath spoken will he speak to this people 12 To whom he said This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest and this is the refreshing yet they would not hear 13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept precept upon precept line upon line line upon line here a little and there a little that they might go and fall backward and be broken and snared and taken 14 ¶ Wherefore hear the word of the LORD ye scornful men that rule this people which is in Jerusalem 15 Because ye have said We have made a covenant with death and with hell are we at agreement when the overflowing scourge shall pass through it shall not come unto us for we have made lies our refuge and under falihood have we hid our selves 16 ¶ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD Behold I lay in Zion for a foundation * Psal 118.22 Matth. 21.42 Act. 4.11 Rom. 9.33 10.11 1 Pet 2.6 7 8. a stone a tried stone a precious corner stone a sure foundation he that believeth shall not make haste 17 Judgement also will I lay to the line and righteousness to the plummet and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies and the waters shall overflow the hiding place 18 ¶ And you covenant with death shall be disanulled and your agreement with hell shall not stand when the overflowing scourge shall pass through 〈◊〉 ye shall be †Heb. a treaâ—ing down to it troden down by it 19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you for morning by morning shall it pass over by day and by night and it shall be a vexation onely ‖ Or when be shall make you to understand doctrine to understand the
another nation without both by speaking and writing my grandfather Jesus when he had much given himself to the reading of the law and the prophets and other books of our fathers and had gotten therein good judgement was drawn on also himself to write something pertaining to learning and wisdom to the intent that those which are desirous to learn and are addâ—cted to these things might profit much more in living according to the law Wherefore let me intreat you to read it with favour and attention and to pardon us wherein we may seem to come short of some words which we have laboured to interpret For the same things uttered in Hebrew and translated into another tongue have not the same force in them and not onely these things but the law it self and the †Gr. prophesies prophets and the rest of the books have no small ‖ Or excellency difference when they are spoken in their own language For in the eight and thirtieth year coming into Egypt when Euergetes was king and continuing there some time I found a ‖ Or help of learning book of no small learning therefore I thought it most necessary for me to bestow some diligence and travel to interpret it using great watchfulness and skill in that space to bring the book to an end and set it forth for them also which in a strange countrey are willing to learn being prepared before in manners to live after the law CHAP. I. 1 All wisdom is from God 10 He giveth it to them that love him 12 The sear of God is full of many blessings 28 To fear God without hypocrisy ALl * 1 King 3.9 wisdom cometh from the Lord and is with him for ever 2 Who can number the sand of the sea and the drops of rain and the days of eternity 3 Who can finde out the height of heaven and the breadth of the earth and the deep and wisdom 4 Wisdom hath been created before all things and the understanding of prudence from everlasting 5 The word of God most High is the fountain of wisdom and her ways are everlasting commandments 6 * Rom. 11.34 To whom hath the root of wisdom been revealed or who hath known her wise counsels 7 Unto whom hath the knowledge of wisdom been made manifest and who hath understood her great experience 8 There is one wise and greatly to be feared the Lord sitting upon his throne 9 He created her and saw her and numbred her and poured her out upon all his works 10 She is with all flesh according to his gist and he hath given her to them that love him 11 The fear of the Lord is honour and glory and gladness and a crown of rejoycing 12 The fear of the Lord maketh a merry heart and giveth joy and gladness and a long life 13 Whoso feareth the Lord it shall go well with him at the last and he ‖ Or shall blessed shall finde favour in the day of his death 14 * Prov. 1.7 Ps 111.10 To fear the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and it was created with the faithful in the womb 15 She hath built an everlasting foundation with men and she shall continue * 2 Chr. 20.21 with their seed 16 To fear the Lord is fulness of wisdom and filleth men with her fruits 17 She filleth all their house with things desirable and the garners with her increase 18 The fear of the Lord is a crown of wisdom making peace and perfect health to flourish both which are the gifts of God and it enlargeth their rejoycing that love him 19 Wisdom raineth down skill and knowledge of understanding and exalteth them to honour that hold her fast 20 The root of wisdom is to fear the Lord and the branches thereof are long life 21 The fear of the Lord driveth away sins and where it is present it turneth away wrath 22 A furious man cannot ‖ Or escape punishment be justified for the sway of his fury shall be his destruction 23 A patient man will bear for a time and afterward joy shall spring up unto him 24 He will hide his words for a time and the lips of many shall declare his wisdom 25 The parables of knowledge are in the treasures of wisdom but godliness is an abomination to a sinner 26 If thou desire wisdom keep the commandments and the Lord shall give her unto thee 27 For the fear of the Lord is wisdom and instruction and faith and meekness are his delight 28 ‖ Or be not disobedient to Distrust not the fear of the Lord when thou art poor and come not unto him with a double heart 29 Be nor an hypocrite in the sight of men and take good heed what thou speakest 30 Exalt not thy fell lest thou fall and bring dishonour upon thy soul and so God discover thy secrets and cast thee down in the midst of the congregation because thou camest not in truth to the sear of the Lord but thy heart is full of deceit CHAP. II. 1 Gods servants must look for trouble 7 and be patient and trust in him 12 For wo to them that do not so 15 But they that fear the Lord will do so MY son if * Matt. 4.1 2 Tim. 3.12 1 Pet. 4.12 thou come to serve the Lord prepare thy soul for temptation 2 Set thy heart aright and constantly endure and ‖ Or haste not make not haste in time of trouble 3 Cleave unto him and depart not away that thou mayest be increased at thy last end 4 Whatsoever is brought upon thee take cheerfully and be patient when thou art changed to a low estate 5 * Wild. 26. Prov. 17.3 For gold is tried in the fire and acceptable men in the furnace of adversity 6 Beleeve in him and he will help thee order thy way aright and trust in him 7 Ye that fear the Lord wait for his mercy and go not aside lest ye fall 8 Ye that fear the Lord beleeve him and your reward shall not fail 9 Ye that fear the Lord hope for good and for everlasting joy and mercy 10 Look at the generations of old and see * Psal 37.25 did ever any trust in the Lord and was confounded or did any abide in his fear and was forsaken or whom did he ever despise that called upon him 11 For the Lord is full of compassion and mercy long-suffering and very pitiful and forgiveth sins and saveth in time of affliction 12 Wo be to fearful hearts and faint hands and the sinner that goeth two ways 13 Wo unto him that is faint-hearted for he beleeveth not therefore shall he not be defended 14 Wo unto you that have lost patience and what will ye do when the Lord shall visit you 15 They that fear the Lord will not disobey his word and * John 14.23 they that love him will keep his ways 16 They that fear the Lord will seek that which
is of low degree and * Gen. 41.40 Dan. 6 3â— maketh him to sit among great men 2 Commend not a man for his beauty neither abhor a man for his outward appearance 3 The hee is little among such as flie but her Fruit is the chief of sweet things 4 * Acts 12. â—1 Boast not of thy clothing and raiment and exalt not thy self in the day of honour for the works of the Lord are wonderful and his works among men are hidden 5 Many †Gr. tâ—rants kings have sat down upon the ground and one that was never thought of hath worn the crown 6 * 1 Sam. 15.28 Hith 6.10 Many mighty men have been greatly disgraced and the honourable delivered into other mens hands 7 * Deut. 12.14 17.6 7 Blame not before thou hast examined the truth understand first and then rebuke 8 * Prov. 18 1â— Answer not before thou hast heard the cause neither interrupt men in the midst of their talk 9 Strive not in a matter that concerneth thee not and sit not ‖ Or in the judgement of sinners in judgement with sinners 10 My son meddle not with many matters for if thou meddle much thou shalt not be innocent and if thou follow after thou shalt not obtain neither shalt thou ‖ Or escape hurt escape by fleeing 11 * Pro. 10.3 Mat. 19.22 There is one that laboureth and taketh pains and maketh haste and is so much the more behinde 12 Again there is another that is slow and hath need of help wanting ability and full of poverty * Jol 42.10 yet the eye of the Lord looked upon him for good and set him up from his low estate 13 And lilted up his head from misery so that many that saw it marvelled at him 14 * Job 1.21 Fzek. 28.4 c. Prosperity and adversity life and death poverty and riches come of the Lord. 15 Wisdom knowledge and understanding of the law are of the Lord love and the way of good works are from him 16 Errour and darkness had their beginning together with sinners and evil shall wax old with them that glory therein 17 The gilt of the Lord remaineth with the godly and his favour bringeth prosperity for ever 18 There is that waxeth rich by his wariness and pinching and this is the portion of his reward 19 Whereas he saith * Luke 12.19 I have found rest and now will eat continually of my goods and yet he knoweth not what time shall ‖ Or pass come upon him and that he must leave those things to others and die 20 * Matth. 10.22 Be stedfast in thy covenant and be conversant therein and wax old in thy work 21 Marvel not at the works of sinners but trust in the Lord and abide in thy labour for it is an easie thing in the sight of the Lord on the sudden to make a poor man rich 22 The blesling of the Lord is ‖ Or for a reward in the reward of the godly and suddenly he maketh his blessing to flourish 23 Say not * Mal. 3.14 What prosit is there of my service and what good things shall I have hereafter 24 Again say not I have enough and possess many things and what evil can come to me hereafter 25 In the day of prosperity there is a forgetfulness of affliction and in the day of affliction there is no more remembrance of prosperity 26 For it is an easie thing unto the Lord in the day of death to reward a man according to his ways 27 The affliction of an hour maketh a man forget pleasure and in his end his deeds shall be discovered 28 Judge none blessed before his death for a man shall be known in his children 29 Bring not every man into thine house for the deceitful man hath many trains 30 Like as a partride taken and kept in a cage so is the heart of the proud and like as a spie watcheth he for thy sall 31 For he lieth in wait and turneth good into evil and in things worthy praise will say blame upon thee 32 Of a spark of fire a heap of coals is kindled and a sinful man layeth wait for bloud 33 Take heed of a mischievous man for he worketh wickedness lest he bring upon thee a perpetual blot 34 Receive a stranger into thine house and he will disturb thee and turn thee out of thine own CHAP. XII 2 Be not liberal to the ungodly 10 Trust not thine enemy nor the wicked WHen thou wilt do good know to whom thou doest it so shalt thou be thanked for thy benefits 2 Do good to the godly man and thou shalt finde 2 recompence and if not from him yet from the most High 3 There can no good come to him that is always occupied in evil nor to him that giveth no alms 4 Give to the godly man and help not a sinner 5 Do well unto him that is lowly but give not to the ungodly hold back thy bread and give it not unto him self he over-master thee thereby For else thou shalt receive twice as much evil for all the good thou shalt have done unto him 6 For the most High hateth sinners and will repay vengeance unto the ungodly and keepeth them against the mighty day of their punishment 7 Give unto the good and help not the sinner 8 A friend cannot be known in prosperity and an enemy cannot be bidden in adversity 9 In the prosperity of a man enemies will be grieved but in his adversity even a friend will depart 10 Never trust thine enemy for like as ‖ Or brasâ— iron rusteth so is his wickedness 11 Though he humble himself and go crouching yet take good heed and beware of him and thou shalt be unto him as it thou hadst wiped a looking-glass and thou shalt know that his rust hath not been altogether wiped away 12 Set him not by thee lest when he hath overthrown thee he stand up in thy place neither let him sit at thy right hand self he seek to take thy seat and thou at the last remember my words and be pricked therewith 13 Who will pity a charmer that is bitten with a serpent or any such as come nigh wilde beasis 14 So one that goeth to a sinner and is ‖ Or mâ—â—gled desiled with him in his sins who will pity 15 For a while he will abide with thee but if thou begin to fall he will not tarry 16 An enemy speaketh sweetly with his lips but in his heart he imagineth how to throw thee into a pit he will * Jer. 41.6 weep with his eyes but if he sinde opportunity he will not be satisfied with bloud 17 If adversity come upon thee thou shalt sinde him there first and though he pretend to help thee yet shall he ‖ Or supplant undermine thee 18 He will shake his head and clap his hands and whisper much and change his
burnt-offering or sacrifice or oblation or incense or place to sacrifice before thee and to finde mercy 16 Nevertheless in a contrite heart and an humble spirit let us be accepted 17 Like as in the burnt-offerings of rams and bullocks and like as in ten thousands of fat lambs so let our sacrifice be in thy sight this day and grant that we may wholly go after thee for they shall not be confounded that put their trust in thee 18 And now we follow thee with all our heart we fear thee and seek thy face 19 Put us not to shame but deal with us after thy loving kindness and according to the multitude of thy mercies 20 Deliver us also according to thy marvellous works give glory to thy name O Lord let all them that do thy servants hurt be ashamed 21 And let them be confounded ‖ Or by thy power and might in all their power and might and let their strength be broken 22 And let them know that thou art Lord the onely God and glorious over the whole world 23 And the kings servants that put Esau thy first-born I have done according as thou badest me arise I pray thee sit and eat of my venison that thy soul may bless me 20 And Isaac said unto his son How is it that thou hast found it so quickly my son And he said Because the LORD thy God brought it †Heb. before â—â—e to me 21 And Isaac said unto Jacob come near I pray thee that I may feel thee my son whether thou be my very son Esau or not 22 And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father and he felt him and said The voice is Jacobs voice but the hands are the hands of Esau 23 And he discerned him not because his hands were hairy as his brother Esaus hands So â—e blessed him 24 And he said Art thou my very son Esau And he said I am 25 And he said Bring it near to me and I will eat of my sons venison that my soul may bless thee And he brought it near to him and he did eat and he brought him wine and he drank 26 And his father Isaac said unto him Come near now and kiss me my son 27 And he came near and kissed him and he smelled the smell of his raiment and blessed him and said See the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed 28 Therefore * Heb. 11.20 God give thee of the dew of heaven and the fatness of the earth and plenty of corn and wine 29 Let people serve thee and nations bow down to thee be lord over thy brethren and let thy mothers sons bow down to thee Curseth be every one that curseth thee and blessed be he that blesseth thee 30 ¶ And it came to pass assoon as Isaac had made an end of blessing Jacob and Jacob was yet scarce gone out from the presence of Isaac his father that Esau his brother came in from his hunting 31 And he also had made savour meat and brought it unto his father and said unto his father Let my father arise and eat of his sons venison that thy soul may bless me 32 And Isaac his father said unto him Who art thou And he said I am thy son thy first-born Esau 33 And Isaac †Heb. trembled with a great trembling greatly trembled very exceedingly and said Who where is he that hath †Heb. â—â—â—ted taken venison and brought it me and I have eaten of all before thou camest and have blessed him yea and he shall be blessed 34 And when Esau heard the words of his father he cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry and said unto his father Bless me even me also O my father 35 And he said Thy brother came with subtilty and hath taken away thy blessing 36 And he said Is not he rightly named ‖ That is a supplanter Jacob for he hath supplanted me these two times he took away my birth-right and behold now he hath taken away my blessing And he said Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me 37 And Isaac answered and said unto Esau Behold I have made him thy lord and all his brethren have I given to him for servants and with corn and wine have I ‖ Or supported sustained him and what shall I do now unto thee my son 38 And Esau said unto his father Hast thou but one blessing my father bless me even me also O my father And The security of Gods protection ¶ A psalm of David * 2 Sam. 15 14. when he fled from Absalom his son LORD how are they increased that trouble me many are they that rise up against me 2 Many there be which say of my soul There is no help for him in God Selah 3 But thou O LORD art a shield ‖ Or about for me my glory and the sister up of mine head 4 I cried unto the LORD with my voice and he heard me out of his holy hill Selah 5 * Psal 4 8. utterly ‖ Or abolished rooted out 11 Who then should make more mourning then she that hath lost so great a multitude and not thou which art sorry but for one 12 But if thou sayest unto me My lamentation is not like the earths because I have lost the fruit of my womb which I brought forth with pains and bare with sorrows 13 ‖ But the earth after the manner of the earth whereinto the present multitude is gone again as it came out But the earth not so for the multitude present in it according to the course of the earth is gone as it came 14 Then say I unto thee Like as thou hast brought forth with labour even so the earth also hath given her fruit namely man ever since the beginning unto him that made her 15 Now therefore keep thy sorrow to thy self and bear with a good courage that which hath be faln thee 16 For it thou shalt acknowledge the determination of God to be just thou shalt both receive thy son in time and shalt be commended amongst women 17 Go thy way then into the city to thine husband 18 And she said unto me That will I not do I will not go into the city but here will I die 19 So I proceeded to speak further unto her and said 20 Do not so but be counselled by me for how many are the adversities of Sion be comforted in regard of the sorrow of Jerusalem 21 For thou seest that our sanctuary is said waste our altar broken down our temple destroyed 22 Our psaltery is laid on the ground our song is put to silence our rejoycing is at an end the light of our candlestick is put out the ark of our covenant is spoiled our holy things are defiled and the name that is called upon us is almost profaned our children are put to shame our priests are burnt our Levites are gone into captivity our virgins are defiled and our wives ravished our righteous men carried away our little ones destroyed our young men are brought in bondage and our strong men are become weak 23 And which is the greatest of all the seal of Sion hath now lost her honour for she is delivered into the hands of them that hate us 24 And therefore shake off thy great heaviness and put away the multitude of sorrows that the Mighty may be merciful unto thee again and the Highest shall give thee rest and ease from thy labour 25 And it came to pass while I was talking with her behold her face upon a sudden shined exceedingly and her countenance glistered so that I was afraid of her and mused what it might be 26 And behold suddenly she made a great cry very fearful so that the earth shook at the noise of the woman 27 And I looked and behold the woman appeared unto me no more but there was a city builded and a large place shewed it self from the foundations then was I afraid and cried with a loud voice and said 28 Where is * Ch. 4.1 Uriel the angel who came unto me at the first for he hath caused me to fall ‖ Or into the multitude in a trance into many trances and mine end is turned into corruption and my prayer to rebuke 29 And as I was speaking these words behold he came unto me and looked upon me 30 And so I say as one that had been dead and mine understanding was taken from me and he took me by the right hand and comforted me and set me upon my feet and said unto me 31 What aileth thee and why art thou so disquieted and why is thine understanding troubled and the thoughts of thine heart 32 And I said Because thou hast forsaken me and yet I did according to thy * Chap 5.20 words and I went into the field and so I have seen and yet see that I am not able to express 33 And he said unto me Stand up manfully and I will advise thee 34 Then said I Speak on my lord in me onely forsake me not lest I die frustrate of my hope 35 For I have seen that I knew not and hear that I do not know 36 Or is my sense deceived or my soul in a dream 37 Now therefore I beseech thee that thou wilt shew thy servant of this ‖ Or trance vision 38 He answered me then and said Hear me and I shall inform thee and tell thee wherefore thou art afraid for the Highest will reveal many secret things unto thee 39 He hath seen that thy ‖ Or purpose way is right for that thou sorrowest continually for thy people and makest great lamentation for Sion 40 This therefore is the meaning of the vision which thou lately sawest 41 Thou sawest a woman mourning and thou beganst to comfort her 42 But now seest thou the likeness of the woman no more but there appeared unto thee a city builded 43 And whereas she told thee of the death of her son this is the ‖ Or interpretation solution 44 This woman whom thou sawest is Sion and whereas she said unto thee even she whom thou seest as a city builded 45 Whereas I say she said unto thee that she hath been thirty years barren those are the thirty years wherein there was no offering made in her 46 But after thirty years Solomon builded the city and offered offerings and then bare the barren a son 47 And whereas she told thee that she nourished him with labour that was the dwelling in Jerusalem 48 But whereas she said unto thee That my son coming into his marriage-chamber hapned to have a fall and died this was the destruction that came to Jerusalem 49 And behold thou sawest her likeness and because she mourned for her son thou beganst to comfort her and of these things which have chanced these are to be opened unto thee 50 For now the most High seeth that thou art grieved unfeignedly and sufferest from thy whole heart for her so hath he shewed thee the brightness of her glory and the comeliness of her beauty 51 And therefore I bade thee remain in the field where no house was builded 52 For I knew that the Highest would shew this unto thee 53 Therefore I commanded thee to go into the field where no foundation of any building was 54 For in the place wherein the Highest beginneth to shew his city there can no mans building be able to stand 55 And therefore sear not let not thine heart he affrighted but go thy way in and see the beauty and greatness of the building as much as thine eyes be able to see 56 And then shalt thou hear as much as thine ears may comprehend 57 For thou art blessed above many other and ‖ Or at called to be with c. art called with the Highest and so are but few 58 But to morrow at night thou shalt remain here 59 And so shall the Highest shew thee visions of the ‖ Or

Rom. 2.11 Gal. 2.5 Ephes 6.9 Coloss 3.25 1 Pet. 1.17 no respect of persons 13 He will not accept any person against a poor man but will hear the prayer of the oppressed 14 He will not despise the supplication of the fatherless nor the widow when she poureth out her complaint 15 Do not the tears run down the widows cheeks and is not her cry against him that causeth them to fall 16 He that serveth the Lord shall be accepted with favour and his prayer shall reach unto the clouds 17 The prayer of the humble pierceth the clouds and till it come nigh he will not be comforted and will not depart till the most High shall behold to judge righteously and execute judgement 18 For the Lord will not be slack neither will the Mighty be patient towards them till he have smitten in sunder the loyns of the unmerciful and repayed vengeance to the heathen till he have taken away the multitude of the ‖ Or crued oppressours proud and broken the sceptre of the unrighteous 19 Till he have rendred to every man according to his deeds and to the works of men according to their devices till he have judged the cause of his people and made them to rejoyce in his mercy 20 Mercy is †Gr. fâ—r seasonable in the time of affliction as clouds of rain in the time of drought CHAP. XXXVI 1 A prayer for the church against the enemies thereof 18 A good heart and a froward 21 Of a good wife HAve mercy upon us O Lord God of all and behold us 2 And send thy fear upon all the nations that seek not after thee 3 * Jer. 10.25 Lift up thy hand ‖ Or upon against the strange nations and let them see thy power 4 As thou wast sanctified in us before them so be thou magnified among them before us 5 And let them know thee as we have known thee that there is no God but onely thou O God 6 Shew new signs and make other strange wonders glorify thy hand and thy right arm that they may set forth thy wondrous works 7 Raise up indignation and pour out wrath take away the adversary and destroy the enemy 8 Make the time short remember the †Gr. oath covenant and let them declare thy wonderful works 9 Let him that escapeth be consumed by the rage of the fire and let them perish that oppress the people 10 Smite in sunder the heads of the rulers of the heathen that say There is none other but we 11 Gather all the tribes of Jacob together and inherit thou them as from the beginning 12 O Lord have mercy upon the people that is called by thy name and upon Israel * Exod. 4.22 whom thou hast named thy first-born 13 O be merciful unto Jerusalem thy holy city the place of thy rest 14 Fill Sion ‖ Or. that it may magnify thine oracles with thine unspeakable oracles and thy people with thy glory 15 Give testimony unto those that thou hast possessed from the beginning and raise up ‖ Or. prophesies prophets that have been in thy name 16 Reward them that wait for thee and let thy prophets be found faithful 17 O Lord hear the prayer of thy ‖ Or supplients servants according to the * Num. 6.23 blessing of Aaron over thy people that all they which dwell upon the earth may know that thou art the Lord the eternal God 18 The belly devoureth all meats yet is one meat better then another 19 * Job 34.3 As the palate tasteth divers kinds of venison so doth an heart of understanding false speeches 20 A froward heart causeth heaviness but a man of experience will recompense him 21 A woman will receive every man yet is one daughter better then another 22 The beauty of a woman cheereth the countenance and a man loveth nothing better 23 If there be kindness meekness and comfort in her tongue then is not her husband like ‖ Or common other men 24 He that getteth a wife beginneth ‖ Or to thrive a possession a help like unto himself and a pillar of rest 25 Where no hedge is there the possession is spoiled and he that hath no wife will wander up and down mourning 26 Who will trust a thief well-appointed that skippeth from city to city so who will beleeve a man that hath no house and lodgeth wheresoever the night taketh him CHAP. XXXVII 1 How to know friends and counsellours 12 The discretion and wisdom of a godly man blesseth him 27 Learn to refrain thine appetite EVery friend saith I am his friend also but there is a friend which is onely a friend in name 2 Is it not a grief unto death when a companion and friend is turned to an enemy 3 O wicked imagination whence camest thou in to cover the earth with deceit 4 There is a companion which rejoyceth in the prosperity of a friend but in the time of trouble will be against him 5 There is a companion which helpeth his friend for the belly and taketh up the buckler ‖ Or in presence of the enemy against the enemy 6 Forget not thy friend in thy minde and be not unmindful of him in thy riches 7 Every councellour extolleth counsel but there is some that councelleth for himself 8 Beware of a counsellour and know before ‖ Or what use there is of him what need he hath for he will counsel for himself lest he cast the lot upon thee 9 And say unto thee Thy way is good and afterward he stand on the other side to see what shall be fall thee 10 Consult not with one that suspecteth thee and hide thy counsel from such as envy thee 11 Neither consult with a woman touching her of whom she is jealous neither with a coward in matters of war nor with a merchant concerning exchange nor with a buyer of selling nor with an envious man of thankfulness nor with an unmerciful man touching kindness nor with the slothful for any work nor with an hireling for a year of finishing work nor with an idle servant of much business hearken not unto these in any mattter of counsel 12 But be continually with a godly man whom thou knowest to keep the commandments of the Lord whose minde is according to thy minde and will sorrow with thee if thou shalt miscarry 13 And let the counsel of thine own heart stand for there is no man more faithful unto thee then it 14 For a mans minde is sometime wont to tell him more then seven watchmen that sit above in an high tower 15 And above all this pray to the most High that he will direct thy way in truth 16 Let reason go before every enterprise and counsel before every action 17 The countenance is a signe of changing of the heart 18
I say unto you He shall not lose his reward 42 * Mat. 18.5 And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that beleeve in me it is better for him that a milstone were hanged about his neck and he were cast into the sea 43 * Mat. 5.27 18.8 And if thy hand ‖ Or cause thee to offend offend thee cut it off it is better for thee to enter into life maimed then having two hands to go into hell into the fire that never shall be quenched 44 * Isa 66.24 Where their worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched 45 And if thy foot offend thee cut it off it is better for thee to enter halt into life then having two feet to be cast into hell into the fire that never shall be quenched 46 Where their worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched 47 And if thine eye ‖ Or cause tâ—â—e to offend offend thee pluck it out it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye then having two eyes to be cast into hell fire 48 Where their worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched 49 For every one shall be salted with sire * Lev. 2.13 and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt 50 * Mat. 5.13 Salt is good but if the salt have lost his saltness wherewith will you leason it Have salt in your seâ—â—es have peace one with another CHAP. X. 2 Christ disputeth with the Pharisees touching divorcement 13 blesseth the children that are brought unto him 17 resolveth a rich man how he may inherit â—â—fe everlasting 23 telleth his disciples of the danger of riches 28 promiseth rewards to them that forsake any thing for the gospel 32 foretelleth his death and resurrection 35 biddeth the two ambitious suiters to think rather of suffering with him 45 and restoreth to Bartimeus his sight ANd * Mat. 19.1 he arose from thence and cometh into the coasts of Judea by the farther side of Jordan and the people resort unto him again and as he was wont he taught them again 2 ¶ And the Pharisees came to him and asked him Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife tempting him 3 And he answered said unto them What did Moses command you 4 And they said Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement and to put her away 5 And Jesus answered and said unto them For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept 6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female 7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife 8 And they twain shall be one flesh so then they are no more twain but one flesh 9 What therefore God hath joyned together let no man put asunder 10 And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter 11 And he said unto them * Mat. 5.32 19.9 Whosoever shall put away his wife and marry another committeth adultery against her 12 And if a woman shall put away her husband and be married to another she committeth adultery 13 ¶ * Mat. 19.13 And they brought young children to him that he should touch them and his disciples rebuked those that brought them 14 But when Jesus saw it he was much displeased and said unto them Suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not for of such is the kingdom of God 15 Verily I say unto you Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little childe he shall not enter therein 16 And he took them up in his arms put his hands upon them and blessed them 17 ¶ * Mat. 19.15 And when he was gone forth into the way there came one running and kneeled to him and asked him Good Master what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life 18 And Jesus said unto him Why callest thou me good there is none good but one that is God 19 Thou knowest the commandments Do not commit adultery Do not kill Do not steal Do not bear false witness Defraud not Honour thy father and mother 20 And he answered and said unto him Master all these have I observed from my youth 21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him and said unto him One thing thou lackest go thy way sell whatsoever thou hast and give to the poor and thou shalt have treasure in heaven and come take up the cross and follow me 22 And he was sad at that saying and went away grieved for he had great possessions 23 ¶ And Jesus looked round about and saith unto his disciples How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 24 And the disciples were astonished at his words But Jesus answereth again and saith unto them Children how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle then for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God 26 And they were astonished out of measure saying among themselves Who then can be saved 27 And Jesus looking upon them saith With men it is impossible but not with God for with God all things are possible 28 ¶ * Mat. 19.27 Then Peter began to say unto him Lo we have left all and have followed thee 29 And Jesus answered and said Verily I say unto you There is no man that hath left house or brethren or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands for my sake and the gospels 30 But he shall receive an hundred-sold now in this time houses and brethren and sisters and mothers and children and lands with persecutions and in the world to come eternal life 31 * Mat. 19.30 But many that are first shall be last and the last first 32 ¶ * Mat. 20.17 And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem and Jesus went before them and they were amazed and as they followed they were afraid And he took again the twelve and began to tell them what things should happen unto him 33 Saying Behold we go up to Jerusalem and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests and unto the scribes and they shall condemn him to death and shall deliver him to the Gentiles 34 And they shall mock him and shall scourge him and shall spit upon him and shall kill him and the third day he shall rise again 35 ¶ * Mat. 20 2â— And James and John the sons of Zebedee come unto him saying Master we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire 36 And he said unto them What would ye that I should do for you 37 They said unto him Grant unto us that we may sit one on thy right hand and the other on thy left hand in thy glory 38 But Jesus said unto them Ye know not
