a very fair woman and one that feared the Lord. 3 Her parents also were righteous and taught their daughter according to the law of Moses 4 Now Joacim was a great rich man and had a fair garden joyning unto his house and to him resorted the Jews because he was more honourable then all others 5 The same year were appointed two of the ancients of the people to be judges such as the Lord spake of that wickedness came from Babylon from ancient judges who seemed to govern the people 6 These kept much at Joacims house and all that had any suits in law came unto them 7 Now when the people departed away at noon Susanna went into her husbands garden to walk 8 And the two elders saw her going in every day and walking so that their lust was inflamed toward her 9 And they perverted their own minde and turned away their eyes that they might not look unto heaven nor remember just judgements 10 And albeit they both were wounded with her love yet durst not one shew another his grief 11 For they were ashamed to declare their lust that they desired to have to do with her 12 Yet they watched diligently from day to day to see her 13 And the one said to the other Let us now go home for it is dinner-time 14 So when they were gone out they parted the one from the other and turning back again they came to the same place and after they had asked one another the cause they acknowledged their lust then appointed they a time both together when they might finde her alone 15 And it fell out as they watched a fit time she went in †Gr. as yesterday and the day before as before with two maids onely and she was desirous to wash her self in the garden for it was hot 16 And there was no body there save the two elders that had hid themselves and watched her 17 Then she said to her maids Bring me oyl and washing-balls and shut the garden doors that I may wash me 18 And they did as she bade them and shut the garden-doors and went out themselves at ‖ Or side-doors privy doors to fetch the things that she had commanded them but they saw not the elders because they were hid 19 Now when the maids were gone forth the two elders rose up and ran unto her saying 20 Behold the garden-doors are shut that no man can see us and we are in love with thee therefore consent unto us and lie with us 21 If thou wilt not we will bear witness against thee that a young man was with thee and therefore thou didst send away thy maids from thee 22 Then Susanna sighed and said I am straighted on every side for if I do this thing it is death unto me and if I do it not I cannot escape your hands 23 It is better for me to fall into your hands and not to do it then to sin in the sight of the Lord. 24 With that Susanna cried with a loud voice and the two elders cried out against her 25 Then ran the one and opened the garden-door 26 So when the servants of the house heard the cry in the garden they rushed in at a privy door to see what was done unto her 27 But when the elders had declared their matter the servants were greatly ashamed for there was never such a report made of Susanna 28 And it came to pass the next day when the people were assembled to her husband Joacim the two elders came also full of mischievous imagination against Susanna to put her to death 29 And said before the people Send for Susanna the daughter of Chelcias Joacims wife and so they sent 30 So she came with her father and mother her children and all her kindred 31 Now Susanna was a very delicate woman and beauteous to behold 32 And these wicked men commanded to uncover her face for she was covered that they might be filled with her beauty 33 Therefore her friends and all that saw her wept 34 Then the two elders stood up in the mids of the people and said their hands upon her head 35 And she weeping looked up towards heaven for her heart trusted in the Lord. 36 And the elders said As we walked in the garden alone this woman came in with two maids and shut the garden doors and sent the maids away 37 Then a young man who there was hid came unto her and lay with her 38 Then we that stood in a corner of the garden seeing this wickedness ran unto them 39 And when we saw them together the man we could not hold for he was stronger then we and opened the door and leaped out 40 But having taken this woman we asked who the young man was but she would not tell us these things do we testifie 41 Then the assembly beleeve them as those that were the elders and judges of the people so they condemned her to death 42 Then Susanna cried out with a loud voice and said O everlasting God that knowest the secrets and knowest all things before they be 43 Thou knowest that they have born false witness against me and behold I must die whereas I never did such things as these men have maliciously invented against me 44 And the Lord heard her voice 45 Therefore when she was led to be put to death the Lord raised up the holy spirit of a young youth whose name was Daniel 46 Who cried with a loud voice I am clear from the bloud of this woman 47 Then all the people turned them towards him and said What mean those words that thou hast spoken 48 So he standing in the midst of them said Are ye such fools ye sons of Israel that without examination or knowledge of the truth ye have condemned a daughter of Israel 49 Return again to the place of judgement for they have born false witness against her 50 Wherefore all the people turned again in haste and the elders said unto him Come sit down among us and shew it us seeing God hath given thee the honour of an elder 51 Then said Daniel unto them Put these two aside one far from another and I will examine them 52 So when they were put asunder one from another he called one of them and said unto him O thou that art waxen old in wickedness now thy sins which thou hast committed aforetime are come to light 53 For thou hast pronounced false judgement and hast condemned the innocent and hast let the guilty go free albeit the XXVII 1 Jotham reigning well prospereth 5 He subdueth the Ammonites 7 His reign 9 Ahaz succeedeth him JOtham * 2 Kin. 15.32 c was twenty and five years old when he began to reign and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem his mothers name also was Jerushah the daughter of Zadok 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD according to all that his father Uzziah did howbeit he entred not into the temple of the LORD And the people did yet corruptly 3 He built the high gate of the house of the LORD and on the wall of ‖ Or the tower Ophel he built much 4 Moreover he built cities in the mountains of Judah and in the forests he built castles and towers 5 ¶ He fought also with the king of the Ammonites and prevailed against them And the children of Ammon gave him the same year an hundred talents of silver and ten thousand measures of wheat and ten thousand of barley †Heb. this So much did the children of Ammon pay unto him both the second year and the third 6 So Jotham became mighty because he ‖ Oâ— â—stâ—blisâ—â—d prepared his ways before the LORD his God 7 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Jotham and all his wars and his ways lo they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah 8 He was five and twenty years old when he began to reign and reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem 9 ¶ And Jotham slept with his fathers and they buried him in the city of David and Ahaz his son reigned in his stead CHAP. XXVIII 1 Ahaz reigning very wickedly it greatly afflicted by the Syrians 6 Judah being captivated by the Israelites is sent home by the counsel of Oded the prophet 16 Ahaz sending for aid to Assyria is not helped thereby 22 In his dâ—stress he groweth more idolatrous 26 He dying Hezekiah succeedeth him AHaz * 1 King 16.2 was twenty years old when he began to reign and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem but he did not that which was right in the sight of the LORD like David his father 2 For he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and made also molten images for Baalim 3 Moreover he ‖ Or offered sacrifice burnt incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom and burnt * Levâ—t 18.21 his children in the fire after the abominations of the heathen whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel 4 He sacrificed also and burnt incense in the high places and on the hills and under every green tree 5 Wherefore the LORD his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria and they smote him and carried away a great multitude of them captives and brought them to †Heb Daâ—mâ—sâ—k Damascus and he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel who smote him with a great slaughter 6 ¶ For Pekih the son of Remaliah slew in Judah an hundred and twenty thousand in one day which were all †Heb. sons of velour valiant men because they had forsaken the LORD God of their fathers 7 And Zichri a mighty man of Ephraim slew Maaseiah the kings son and Azrikam the governour of the house and Elkanah that was †Heb. the second â—o the king next to the king 8 And the children of Israel carried away captive of their brethren two hundred thousand women sons and daughters and took also away much spoil from them and brought the spoil to Samaria 9 But a prophet of the LORD was there whose name was Oded and he went out before the host that came to Samaria and said unto them Behold because the LORD God of your fathers was wroth with Judah he hath delivered them into your hand and ye have slain them in a rage that reacheth up unto heaven 10 And now ye purpose to keep under the children of Judah and Jerusalem for bond-men and bond-women unto you but are there not with you even with you sins against the LORD your God 11 Now hear me therefore and deliver the captives again which ye have taken captive of your
sling-stones are turned with him into stubble 29 Darts are counted as stubble he laugheth at the shaking of a spear 30 †Heb. sharp pieces of the potsheâ—â—d Sharp stones are under him he spreadeth sharp-pointed things upon the mire 31 He maketh the deep to boyl like a pot he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment 32 He maketh a path to shine after him one would think the deep to be hoary 33 Upon earth there is not his like ‖ Or who behave themselves without fear who is made without fear 34 He beholdeth all high things he is a king over all the children of pride CHAP. XLII 1 Job submitteth himself unto God 7 God preferring Jobs cause maketh his friends submit themselves and accepteth him 10 He magnifieth and blesseth Job 16 Jobs age and death THen Job answered the LORD and said 2 I know that thou canst do every thing and that ‖ Or no thought of thine can be hindred no thought can be withholden from thee 3 * Chap. 38.2 Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge therefore have I uttered that I understood not things too wonderful for me which I knew not 4 Hear I beseech thee and I will speak I will demand of thee and declare thou unto me 5 I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear but now mine eye seeth thee 6 Wherefore I abhor my self and repent in dust and ashes 7 ¶ And it was so that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite My wrath is kindled against thee and against thy two friends for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right as my servant Job hath 8 Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams and go to my servant â—ob and offer up for your selves a burnt-offering and my servant Job shall pray for you for †Heb. his face or person him will I accept lest I deal with you after your folly in that ye have not spoken of me the thing which is right like my servant Job 9 So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went and did according as the LORD commanded them the LORD also accepted †Heb. the face of Job Job 10 And the LORD turned the captivity of Job when he prayed for his friends also the LORD †Heb. added all that had been to Job unto the double gave Job twice as much as he had before 11 Then came there unto him all his brethren and all his sisters and all they that had been of his acquaintance before and did eat bread with him in his house and they bemoaned him and comforted him over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him every man also gave him a piece of money and every one an ear-ring of gold 12 So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more then his beginning for he had fourteen thousand sheep and six thousand camels and a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand she-asses 13 He had also seven sons and three daughters 14 And he called the name of the first Jemima and the name of the second Kezia and the name of the third Keren-happuch 15 And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren 16 After this lived Job an hundred and fourty years and saw his sons and his sons sons even four generations 17 So Job died being old and full of days ¶ The book of PSALMS PSAL. I. 1 The happiness of the godly 4 The unhappiness of the ungodly BLessed * Pro. 4.14 is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ‖ Or wicked ungodly nor standeth in the way of sinners nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD * Josh 1.8 Psal 119.1 and in his law doth he meditate day and night 3 And he shall be like a tree * Jer. 17.8 planted by the rivers of water that bringeth forth his fruit in his season his leaf also shall not †Heb. fade wither and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper 4 The ungodly are not so but are * Psal 35.5 Isa 17.13 like the chaff which the wind driveth away 5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgement nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous 6 For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous but the way of the ungodly shall perish PSAL. XXXIV 1 David praiseth God and exhorteth others thereto by his experience 8 They are blessed that trust in God 11 He exhorteth to the fear of God 15 The priviledges of the righteous ¶ A psalm of David when he changed his behaviour before ‖ Or Achis◠1 Sam. 21.11 Abimelech who drove him away and he departed I Will bless the LORD at all times his praise shall continually be in my mouth 2 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD the humble shall hear thereof and be glad 3 O magnifie the LORD with me and let us exalt his name together 4 I sought the LORD and he heard me and delivered me from all my fears 5 They looked unto him and ‖ Or they flowed unto him were lightned and their faces were not ashamed 6 This poor man cried and the LORD heard him and saved him out of all his troubles 7 The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him and delivereth them 8 O taste and see that the LORD is good blessed is the man that trusteth in him 9 O fear the LORD ye his saints for there is no want to them that fear him 10 The young lions do lack and suffer hunger but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing 11 Come ye children hearken unto me I will teach you the fear of the LORD 12 * 1 Pet 3.10 What man is he that desireth life and loveth many days that he may see good 13 Keep thy tongue from evil and thy lips from speaking guile 14 Depart from evil and do good seek peace and pursue it 15 * Job 36.7 Psal 33.18 1 Pet. 3.12 The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous and his ears are open unto their cry 16 The face of the LORD is against them that do evil to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth 17 The righteous cry and the LORD heareth and delivereth them out of all their troubles 18 The LORD is nigh †Heb. to the broken of heart unto them that are of a broken heart and saveth †Heb. contrite of spirit such as be of a contrite spirit 19

XXVII 1 The care of God over his vineyard 7 His chastisements differ from judgements 12 The Church of Jews and Gentiles IN that day the LORD with his fore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the ‖ Or crossing like a bar piercing serpent even leviathan that crooked serpent and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea 2 In that day sing ye unto her A vineyard of red wine 3 I the LORD do keep it I will water it every moment lest any hurt it I will keep it night and day 4 Fury is not in me who would set the briers and thorns against me in battel I would ‖ Or march against go through them I would burn them together 5 Or let him take hold of my strength that he may make peace with me and he shall make peace with me 6 He shall cause them that come of Jacob to take root Israel shall blossom and bud and fill the face of the world with fruit 7 ¶ Hath he smitten him †Heb. according to the sâ—oâ—e of those as he smote those that smote him or is he slain according to the slaughter of them that are slain by him 8 In measure ‖ Or. when thou sendest it forth when it shooteth forth thou wilt debate with it ‖ Or when he removeth it he stayeth his rough wind in the day of the east-wind 9 By this therefore shall the iniquity of Jacob be purged and this is all the fruit to take away his sin when he maketh all the stones of the altar as chalk-stones that are beaten in sunder the groves and ‖ Or 〈◊〉 images images shall not stand up 10 Yet the defenced city shall be desolate and the habitation forsaken and left like a wilderness there shall the calf feed and there shall he lie down and consume the branches thereof 11 When the boughs thereof are withered they shall be broken off the women come and set them on fire for it is a people of no understanding therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them and he that formed them will shew them no favour 12 ¶ And it shall come to pass in that day that the LORD shall beat off from the chanel of the river unto the stream of Egypt and ye shall be gathered one by one O ye children of Israel 13 And it shall come to pass in that day that the great trumpet shall be blown and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria and the out casts in the land of Egypt and shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem CHAP. XXVIII 1 The prophet threatneth Ephraim for their pride and drunkenness 5 The residue shall be advanced in the kingdom of Christ 7 He rebuketh their errour 9 their untowardness to learn 14 and their security 16 Christ the sure foundationis promised 18 Their security shall be tried 23 They are incited to the consideration of Gods discreet providence WO to the crown of pride to the drunkards of Ephraim whose glorious beauty is a sading stower which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are †Heb. broken overcome with wine 2 Behold the Lord hath a mighty and strong one which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm as a floud of mighty waters overflowing shall cast down to the earth with the hand 3 The crown of pride the drunkards of Ephraim shall be troden †Heb. with feet under feet 4 And the glorious beauty which is on the head of the fat valley shall be a fading flower and as the hasty fruit before the summer which when he that looketh upon it seeth it while it is yet in his hand he †Heb. swalloweth eateth it up 5 ¶ In that day shall the LORD of hosts be for a crown of glory and for a diadem of beauty unto the residue of his people 6 And for a spirit of judgement to him that sitteth in judgement and for strength to them that turn the battel to the gate 7 ¶ But they also have erred through wine and through strong drink are out of the way the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink they are swallowed up of wine they are out of the way through strong drink they err in vision they stumble in judgement 8 For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness so that there is no place clean 9 ¶ Whom shall he teach knowledge and whom shall he make to understand †Heb. the bearing doctrine them that are weaned from the milk and drawn from the breasts 10 For precept ‖ Or hath been must be upon precept precept upon precept line upon line line upon line here a little and there a little 11 For with †Heb. stammerings of lips * 1 Cor. 14.21 stammering lips and another tongue ‖ Or he hath spoken will he speak to this people 12 To whom he said This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest and this is the refreshing yet they would not hear 13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept precept upon precept line upon line line upon line here a little and there a little that they might go and fall backward and be broken and snared and taken 14 ¶ Wherefore hear the word of the LORD ye scornful men that rule this people which is in Jerusalem 15 Because ye have said We have made a covenant with death and with hell are we at agreement when the overflowing scourge shall pass through it shall not come unto us for we have made lies our refuge and under falihood have we hid our selves 16 ¶ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD Behold I lay in Zion for a foundation * Psal 118.22 Matth. 21.42 Act. 4.11 Rom. 9.33 10.11 1 Pet 2.6 7 8. a stone a tried stone a precious corner stone a sure foundation he that believeth shall not make haste 17 Judgement also will I lay to the line and righteousness to the plummet and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies and the waters shall overflow the hiding place 18 ¶ And you covenant with death shall be disanulled and your agreement with hell shall not stand when the overflowing scourge shall pass through 〈◊〉 ye shall be †Heb. a treaâ—ing down to it troden down by it 19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you for morning by morning shall it pass over by day and by night and it shall be a vexation onely ‖ Or when be shall make you to understand doctrine to understand the

XXI 1 Zedekiah sendeth to Jeremiah to enquire the event of Nebuchadrezzars war 3 Jeremiah foretelleth a hard siege and miserable captivity 8 He counselleth the people to fall to the Caldeans 11 and upbraideth the kings bouse THe word which came unto Jeremiah from the LORD when king Zedekiah sent unto him Pashur the son of Melchiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest saying 2 Enquire I pray thee of the LORD for us for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon maketh war against us if so be that the LORD will deal with us according to all his wondrous works that he may go up from us 3 ¶ Then said Jeremiah unto them Thus shall ye say to Zedekiah 4 Thus saith the LORD God of Israel Behold I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands wherewith ye fight against the king of Babylon and against the Caldeans which besiege you without the walls and I will assemble them into the midst of this city 5 And I my self will fight against you with an * Ex. 6.6 outstretched hand and with a strong arm even in anger and in fury and in great wrath 6 And I will smite the inhabitants of this city both man and beast they shall die of a great pestilence 7 And afterwards saith the LORD I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah and his servants and the people and such as are left in this city from the pestilence from the sword and from the famine into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those that seek their life and he shall smite them with the edge of the sword he shall not spare them neither have pity nor have mercy 8 ¶ And unto this people thou shalt say Thus saith the LORD Behold I set before you the way of life and the way of death 9 He that * Ch. 38.2 abideth in this city shall die by the sword and by the famine and by the pestilence but he that goeth out and falleth to the Caldeans that besiege you he shall live and * Ch. 39 1â— and 45.5 his life shall be unto him for a prey 10 For I have set my face against this city for evil and not for good saith the LORD it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon and he shall burn it with fire 11 ¶ And touching the house of the king of Judah say Hear ye the word of the LORD 12 O house of David thus saith the LORD * Ch. 22.3 †Heb. Judge Execute judgement in the morning and deliver him that is spoiled out of the hand of the oppressour left my fury go out like fire and burn that none can quench it because of the evil of your doings 13 Behold I am against thee O †Heb. inhabitress inhabitant of the valley and rock of the plain saith the LORD which say Who shall come down against us or who shall enter into our habitations 14 But I will †Heb. visit upon punish you according to the * Pr. 1.31 fruit of your doings saith the LORD and I will kindle a fire in the forest thereof and it shall devour all things round about it CHAP. XXII 1 He exhorteth to repentance with promises and threats 10 The judgement of Shallum 13 of Jehoiakim 20 and of Coniah THus saith the LORD Go down to the house of the king of Judah and speak there this word 2 And say Hear the word of the LORD O king of Judah that sittest upon the throne of David thou and thy servants and thy people that enter in by these gates 3 Thus saith the LORD * Ch. 21.12 execute ye judgement and righteousness and
upon all the inhabitants of the earth saith the LORD of hosts 30 Therefore prophesie thou against them all these words and say unto them The LORD shall * Joel 3.16 Alli 1.2 roar from on high and utter his voice from his holy habitation he shall mightily roar upon his habitation he shall give a shout as they that tread the grapes against all the inhabitants of the earth 31 A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth for the LORD hath a controversie with the nations he will plead with all flesh he will give them that are wicked to the sword saith the LORD 32 Thus saith the LORD of hosts Behold evil shall go forth from nation to nation and a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth 33 And the slain of the LORD shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth they shall not be * Ch. 16.4 lamented neither gathered nor buried they shall be dung upon the ground 34 ¶ * Ch. 4.8 6.25 Howl ye shepherds and cry and wallow your selves in the ashes ye principal of the flock for †Heb. your days for slaughter the days of your slaughter and of your dispersions are accomplished and ye shall fall like †Heb. a vessil of desire a pleasant vessel 35 And †Heb. flight shall perish from the shepherds and â—scapint from c. the shepherds shall have no way to flee nor the principal of the flock to escape 36 A voice of the cry of the shepherds and an howling of the principal of the flock shall be heard for the LORD hath spoiled their pasture 37 And the peaceable habitations are cut down because of the fierce anger of the LORD 38 He hath forsaken his covert as the lion for their land is †Heb. 〈◊〉 desolation desolate because of the fierceness of the oppressour and because of his fierce anger CHAP. XXVI 1 Jeremiah by promises and threatnings exhorteth to repentants 8 He is therefore apprehended 10 and arraigned 11 His apology 16 He is quit in judgement by the example of Miâ—ah 20 and of Vrijah 24 and by the care of Ahikans IN the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah came this word from the LORD saying 2 Thus saith the LORD Stand in the court of the LORDS house and speak unto all the cities of Judah which come to worship in the LORDS house all the words that I command thee to speak unto them * Act. â—0 27 diminish not a word 3 If so be they will hearken and turn every man from his evil way that I may * Ch. 18.8 repent me of the evil which I purpose to do unto them because of the evil of their doings 4 And thou shalt say unto them Thus saith the LORD If ye will not hearken to me to walk in my law which I have set before you 5 To hearken to the words of my servants the prophets whom I sent unto you both rising up early and sending them but ye have not hearkned 6 Then will I make this house like * 1 Sa. 4.12 Ps 78.60 Ch. 7.12 14 Shiloh and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth 7 So the priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the LORD 8 ¶ Now it came to pass when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that the LORD had commanded him to speak unto all the people that the priests and the prophets and all the people took him saying Thou shalt surely die 9 Why halt thou prophesied in the name of the LORD saying This house shall be like Shiloh and this city shall be desolate without an inhabitant and all the people were gathered against Jeremiah in the house of the LORD 10 ¶ When the princes of Judah heard these things then they came up from the kings house unto the house of the LORD and sat down ‖ Or at the door in the entry of the new gate of the LORDS house 11 Then spake the priests and the prophets unto the princes and to all the people saying †Heb. The judgement of death is for this man This man is worthy to die for he hath prophesied against this city as ye have heard with your ears 12 ¶ Then spake Jeremiah unto all the princes and to all the people saying The LORD sent me to prophesie against this house and against this city all the words that ye have heard 13 Therefore now * Ch. 7.3 amend your ways and your doings and obey the voice of the LORD your God and the LORD will * Ver. 19. repent him of the evil that he hath pronounced against you 14 As for me behold I am in your hand do with me †Heb. as it is good and right in your eyes as seemeth good and meet unto you 15 But know ye for certain that if ye put me to death ye shall surely bring innocent bloud upon your selves and upon this city and upon the inhabitants thereof for of a truth the LORD hath sent me unto you to speak all these words in your ears 16 ¶ Then said the princes and all the people unto the priests and to the prophets This man is not worthy to die for he hath spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God 17 Then rose up certain of the elders of the land and spake to all the assembly of the people saying 18 * Mic. 1.1 Micah the Morasthite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah and spake to all the people of Judah saying Thus saith the LORD of hosts * Mic. 3.12 Zion shall be plowed like a field and Jerusalem shall become heaps and the mountain of the house as the high places of the forest 19 Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him at all to death did he not fear the LORD and besought †Heb. the face of the LORD the LORD and the LORD repented him of the evil which he had pronounced against them Thus might we procure great evil against our souls 20 And there was also a man that prophesied in the name of the LORD Urijah the son of Shemaiah of Kirjath-jearim who prophesied against this city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah 21 And when Jehoiakim the king with all his mighty men and all the princes heard his words the king sought to put him to death but when Urijah heard it he was afraid and fled and went into Egypt 22 And Jehoiakim the king sent men into Egypt namely Elnathan the son of Achbor and certain men with him into Egypt 23 And they fet forth Urijah out of Egypt and brought him unto Jehoiakim the king who slew him with the sword and cast his dead body into the graves of the â€
utterly ‖ Or abolished rooted out 11 Who then should make more mourning then she that hath lost so great a multitude and not thou which art sorry but for one 12 But if thou sayest unto me My lamentation is not like the earths because I have lost the fruit of my womb which I brought forth with pains and bare with sorrows 13 ‖ But the earth after the manner of the earth whereinto the present multitude is gone again as it came out But the earth not so for the multitude present in it according to the course of the earth is gone as it came 14 Then say I unto thee Like as thou hast brought forth with labour even so the earth also hath given her fruit namely man ever since the beginning unto him that made her 15 Now therefore keep thy sorrow to thy self and bear with a good courage that which hath be faln thee 16 For it thou shalt acknowledge the determination of God to be just thou shalt both receive thy son in time and shalt be commended amongst women 17 Go thy way then into the city to thine husband 18 And she said unto me That will I not do I will not go into the city but here will I die 19 So I proceeded to speak further unto her and said 20 Do not so but be counselled by me for how many are the adversities of Sion be comforted in regard of the sorrow of Jerusalem 21 For thou seest that our sanctuary is said waste our altar broken down our temple destroyed 22 Our psaltery is laid on the ground our song is put to silence our rejoycing is at an end the light of our candlestick is put out the ark of our covenant is spoiled our holy things are defiled and the name that is called upon us is almost profaned our children are put to shame our priests are burnt our Levites are gone into captivity our virgins are defiled and our wives ravished our righteous men carried away our little ones destroyed our young men are brought in bondage and our strong men are become weak 23 And which is the greatest of all the seal of Sion hath now lost her honour for she is delivered into the hands of them that hate us 24 And therefore shake off thy great heaviness and put away the multitude of sorrows that the Mighty may be merciful unto thee again and the Highest shall give thee rest and ease from thy labour 25 And it came to pass while I was talking with her behold her face upon a sudden shined exceedingly and her countenance glistered so that I was afraid of her and mused what it might be 26 And behold suddenly she made a great cry very fearful so that the earth shook at the noise of the woman 27 And I looked and behold the woman appeared unto me no more but there was a city builded and a large place shewed it self from the foundations then was I afraid and cried with a loud voice and said 28 Where is * Ch. 4.1 Uriel the angel who came unto me at the first for he hath caused me to fall ‖ Or into the multitude in a trance into many trances and mine end is turned into corruption and my prayer to rebuke 29 And as I was speaking these words behold he came unto me and looked upon me 30 And so I say as one that had been dead and mine understanding was taken from me and he took me by the right hand and comforted me and set me upon my feet and said unto me 31 What aileth thee and why art thou so disquieted and why is thine understanding troubled and the thoughts of thine heart 32 And I said Because thou hast forsaken me and yet I did according to thy * Chap 5.20 words and I went into the field and so I have seen and yet see that I am not able to express 33 And he said unto me Stand up manfully and I will advise thee 34 Then said I Speak on my lord in me onely forsake me not lest I die frustrate of my hope 35 For I have seen that I knew not and hear that I do not know 36 Or is my sense deceived or my soul in a dream 37 Now therefore I beseech thee that thou wilt shew thy servant of this ‖ Or trance vision 38 He answered me then and said Hear me and I shall inform thee and tell thee wherefore thou art afraid for the Highest will reveal many secret things unto thee 39 He hath seen that thy ‖ Or purpose way is right for that thou sorrowest continually for thy people and makest great lamentation for Sion 40 This therefore is the meaning of the vision which thou lately sawest 41 Thou sawest a woman mourning and thou beganst to comfort her 42 But now seest thou the likeness of the woman no more but there appeared unto thee a city builded 43 And whereas she told thee of the death of her son this is the ‖ Or interpretation solution 44 This woman whom thou sawest is Sion and whereas she said unto thee even she whom thou seest as a city builded 45 Whereas I say she said unto thee that she hath been thirty years barren those are the thirty years wherein there was no offering made in her 46 But after thirty years Solomon builded the city and offered offerings and then bare the barren a son 47 And whereas she told thee that she nourished him with labour that was the dwelling in Jerusalem 48 But whereas she said unto thee That my son coming into his marriage-chamber hapned to have a fall and died this was the destruction that came to Jerusalem 49 And behold thou sawest her likeness and because she mourned for her son thou beganst to comfort her and of these things which have chanced these are to be opened unto thee 50 For now the most High seeth that thou art grieved unfeignedly and sufferest from thy whole heart for her so hath he shewed thee the brightness of her glory and the comeliness of her beauty 51 And therefore I bade thee remain in the field where no house was builded 52 For I knew that the Highest would shew this unto thee 53 Therefore I commanded thee to go into the field where no foundation of any building was 54 For in the place wherein the Highest beginneth to shew his city there can no mans building be able to stand 55 And therefore sear not let not thine heart he affrighted but go thy way in and see the beauty and greatness of the building as much as thine eyes be able to see 56 And then shalt thou hear as much as thine ears may comprehend 57 For thou art blessed above many other and ‖ Or at called to be with c. art called with the Highest and so are but few 58 But to morrow at night thou shalt remain here 59 And so shall the Highest shew thee visions of the ‖ Or
he put him aside and commanded to bring the other and said unto him O thou seed of Chanaan and not of Juda beauty hath deceived thee and lust hath perverted thine heart 57 Thus have ye dealt with the daughters of Israel and they for fear companied with you but the daughter of Juda would not abide your wickedness 58 Now therefore tell me Under what tree didst thou take them companying together Who answered Under a ‖ Or kinde of oak holm-tree 59 Then said Daniel unto him Well thou hast also lied against thine own head for the angel of God waiteth with the sword to cut thee in two that he may destroy you 60 With that all the assembly cried out with a loud voice and praised God who saveth them that trust in him 61 And they rose against the two elders for Daniel had convctied them of false witness by their own mouth 62 And according to the law of Moses * Deut. 19.19 Prov. 19.5 they did unto them in such sort as they maliciously intended to do to their neighbour and they put them to death Thus the innocent bloud was saved the same day 63 Therefore Chelcias and his wife praised God for their daughter Susanna with Joacim her husband and all the kindred because there was no dishonesty found in her 64 From that day forth was Daniel had in great reputation in the sight of the people ¶ The history of the destruction of †Gr. Bels dragon Bel and the Dragon cut off from the end of DANIEL 19 The fraud of Bels priests is discovered by Daniel 27 and the dragon slain which was worshipped 33 Daniel is preserved in the lions â—en 42 The king doth acknowledge the God of Daniel and casteth his enemies into the same den ANd king Astyages was gathered to his fathers and Cyrus of Persia received his kingdom 2 And Daniel ‖ Or liveâ— with the king conversed with the king and was honoured above all his friends 3 Now the Babylonians had an idol called Bel. and there were spent upon him every day twelve great measures of fine flour and fourty sheep and six vessels of wine 4 And the king worshipped it and went daily to adore it but Daniel worshipped his own God And the king said unto him Why dost not thou worship Bel 5 Who answered and said Because I may not worship idols made with hands but the living God who hath created the heaven and the earth and hath sovereignty over all flesh 6 Then said the king unto him Thinkest thou not that Bel is a living god seest thou not how much he eateth and drinketh every day 7 Then Daniel smiled and said O king be not deceived for this is but clay within and brass without and did never * Ecclus 30.19 eat or drink any thing 8 So the king was wroth and called for his priests and said unto them If ye tell me not who this is that devoureth these expenses ye shall die 9 But if you can certifie me that Bel devoureth them then Daniel shall die for he hath spoken blasphemy against Bel. And Daniel said unto the king Let it be according to thy word 10 Now the priests of Bel were threescore and ten beside their wives and children and the king went with Daniel into the temple of Bel. 11 So Bels priests said Lo we go out but thou O king set on the meat and make ready the wine and shut the door fast and seal it with thine own signet 12 And to morrow when thou comest in if thou findest not that Bel hath eaten up all we will suffer death or else Daniel that speaketh falsly against us 13 And they little regarded it for under the table they had made a privy entrance whereby they entred in continually and consumed those things 14 So when they were gone forth the king set meats before Bel. Now Daniel had commanded his servants to bring ashes and those they strewed throughout all the temple in the presence of the king alone then went they out and shut the door and sealed it with the kings signet and so departed 15 Now in the night came the priests with their wives and children as they were wont to do and did eat and drink up all 16 In the morning betime the king arose and Daniel with him 17 And the king said Daniel are the seals whole And he said Yea O king they be whole 18 And assoon as he had opened the door the king looked upon the table and cried with a loud voice Great art thou O Bel and with thee is no deceit at all 19 Then laughed Daniel and held the king that he should not go in and said Behold now the pavement and mark well whose footsteps are these 20 And the king said I see the footsteps of men women and children And then the king was angry 21 And took the priests with their wives and children who shewed him the privy doors where they came in and consumed such things as were upon the table 22 Therefore the king slew them and delivered Bel into Daniels power who destroyed him and his temple 23 ‖ Some add this title Of the dragon And in that same place there was a great dragon which they of Babylon worshipped 24 And the king said unto Daniel Wilt thou also say that this is of brass so he liveth he eateth and drinketh thou canst not say that he is no living god therefore worship him 25 Then said Daniel unto the king I will worship the Lord my God for he is the living God 26 But give me leave O king and I shall slay this dragon without sword or staff The king said I give thee leave 27 Then Daniel took pitch and fat and hair and did seethe them together and made lumps thereof this he put in the dragons mouth and so the dragon burst in sunder and Daniel said ‖ Or Behold what you worship Lo These are the gods you worship 28 When they of Babylon heard that they took great indignation and conspired against the king saying The king is become a Jew and he hath destroyed Bel he hath slain the dragon and put the priests to death 29 So they came to the king and said Deliver us Daniel or else we will destroy thee and thine house 30 Now when the king saw that they pressed him sore being constrained he * Dan 6.16 delivered Daniel unto them 31 Who cast him into the lions den where he was six days 32 And in the den there were seven lions and they had given them every day ‖ Or two slaves two carcases and two sheep which then were not given to them to the intent they might devour Daniel 33 Now there was in Jewry a prophet called Habbacuc who had ‖ Or sod made pottage and had broken bread in a bowl and was going into the field for to bring it to the reapers 34 But the angel of the Lord said unto Habbacuc Go
killeth those that sought for him THen came up John from Gazara and told Simon his father what Cendebeus had done 2 Wherefore Simon called his two eldest sons Judas and John said unto them I my brethren and my fathers house have ever from our youth unto this day fought against the enemies of Israel things have prospered so well in our hands that we have delivered Israel oftentimes 3 But now I am old and ye by Gods mercy are of a sufficient age be ye in stead of me and my brother and go and fight for our nation and the help from heaven be with you 4 So he chose out of the countrey twenty thousand men of war with horsmen who went out against Cendebeus rested that night at Modin 5 And when as they rose in the morning and went into the plain behold a mighty great host both of footmen and hors-men came against them howbeit there was a water-brook betwixt them 6 So he and his people pitched over against them and when he saw that the people were afraid to go over the water-brook he went first over himself and then the men seeing him passed through after him 7 That done he divided his men and set the hors-men in the midst of the footmen for the enemies hors-men were very many 8 Then sounded they with the holy trumpets whereupon Cendebeus and his host were put to flight so that many of them were slain and the remnant gat them to the strong hold 9 At that time was Judas Johns brother wounded but John still followed after them until he came to Cedron which Cendebeus had built 10 ‖ Or Which when be bad set on fire they fled unto the towres in the fields of Azotus and there were slain c. So they fled even unto the towres in the fields of Azotus wherefore he burnt it with fire so that there were slain of them about two thousand men Afterward he returned into the land of Judea in peace 11 Moreover in the plain of Jericho was Ptolemeus the son of Abubus made captain and he had abundance of silver and gold 12 For he was the high priests son in law 13 Wherefore his heart being lifted up he thought to get the countrey to himself and thereupon consulted deceitfully against Simon and his sons to destroy them 14 Now Simon was visiting the cities that were in the countrey and taking care for the good ordering of them at which time he came down himself to Jericho with his sons Mattathias and Judas in the hundred threescore and seventh year in the eleventh moneth called Sabat 15 Where the son of Abubus receiving them deceitfully into a little hold called Ducus which he had built made them a great banquet howbeit he had hid men there 16 So when Simon and his sons had drunk largely Ptolemee and his men rose up and took their weapons and came upon Simon into the banqueting-place and slew him and his two sons and certain of his servants 17 In which doing he committed a great treachery and recompensed evil for good 18 Then Ptolemee wrote these things and sent to the king that he should send him an host to aid him and he would deliver him the countrey and cities 19 He sent others also to Gazara to kill John and unto the †Gr. captains of thousands tribunes he sent letters to come unto him that he might give them silver and gold and rewards 20 And others he sent to take Jerusalem and the mountain of the temple 21 Now one had run afore to Gazara and told John that his father brethren were slain quoth he Ptolemee hath sent to slay thee also 22 Hereof when he heard he was sore astonished So he laid hands on them that were come to destroy him and slew them for he knew that they sought to make him away 23 As concerning the rest of the acts of John and his wars and worthy deeds which he did and the building of the walls which he made and his doings 24 Behold these are written in the Chronicles of his priesthood from the time he was made high priest after his father ¶ The second Book of MACCABEES CHAP. had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity 37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years which departed not from the temple but served God with fastings and prayers night and day 38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in ‖ Or Israâ—â— Jerusalem 39 And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord they returned into Galilee to their own city Nazareth 40 And the childe grew and waxed strong in spirit filled with wisdom and the grace of God was upon him 41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem * Deâ— 16.1 every year at the feast of the pass-over 42 And when he was twelve year old they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast 43 And when they had fulfilled the days as they returned the childe Jesus tarried behinde in Jerusalem and Joseph and his mother knew not of it 44 But they supposing him to have been in the company went a days journey and they sought him among their kinsfolk and among their acquaintance 45 And when they found him not they turned back again to Jerusalem seeking him 46 And it came to pass that after three days they found him in the temple sitting in the midst of the doctours both hearing them and asking them questions 47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers 48 And when they saw him they were amazed and his mother said vnto him Son why hast thou thus dealt with us behold thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing 49 And he said unto them How is it that ye sought me wist ye not that I must be about my Fathers business 50 And they
asked him saying Good Master what shall I do to inherit eternal life 19 And Jesus said unto him Why callest thou me good none is good save one that is God 20 Thou knowest the commandments Do not commit adultery Do not kill Do not steal Do not bear false witness Honour thy father and thy mother 21 And he said All these have I kept from my youth up 22 Now when Jesus heard these things he said unto him Yet lackest thou one thing Sell all that thou hast and distribute unto the poor and thou shalt have treasure in heaven and come follow me 23 And when he heard this he was very sorrowful for he was very rich 24 And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful he said How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through a needles eye then for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God 26 And they that heard it said Who then can be saved 27 And he said The things which are impossible with men are possible with God 28 * Matth. 19.27 Then Peter said Lo we have left all and followed thee 29 And he said unto them Verily I say unto you there is no man that hath lest house or parents or brethren or wife or children for the kingdom of Gods sake 30 Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time and in the world to come life everlasting 31 ¶ * Matth. 20.17 Then he took unto him the twelve and said unto them Behold we go up to Jerusalem and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished 32 For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles and shall be mocked and spitefully entreated and spitted on 33 And they shall scourge him and put him to death and the third day he shall rise again 34 And they understood none of these things and this saying was hid from them neither knew they the things which were spoken 35 ¶ * Matth 20.29 And it came to pass that as he was come nigh unto Jericho a certain blinde man lat by the way-side begging 36 And hearing the multitude pass by he asked what it meant 37 And they told him that Jesus of Nazareth passeth by 38 And he cried saying Jesus thou son of David have mercy on me 39 And they which went before rebuked him that he should hold his peace but he cried so much the more Thou son of David have mercy on me 40 And Jesus stood and commanded him to be brought unto him and when he was come near he asked him 41 Saying What wilt thou that I shall do unto thee And he said Lord that I may receive my sight 42 And Jesus said unto him Receive thy sight thy faith hath saved thee 43 And immediately he received his sight and followed him glorifying God and all the people when they saw it gave praise unto God CHAP. XIX 1 Of Zacheus a publican 11 The ten pieces of money 28 Christ rideth into Jerusalem with triumph 41 weepeth over it 45 driveth the buyers and sellers out of the temple 47 teaching daily in it The rulers would have destroyed him but for fear of the people ANd Jesus entred and passed through Jericho 2 And behold there was a man named Zacheus which was the chief among the publicans and he was rich 3 And he sought to see Jesus who he was and could not for the preass because he was little of stature 4 And he ran before and climbed up into a sycomore-tree to see him for he was to pass that way 5 And when Jesus came to the place he looked up and saw him and said unto him Zacheus make haste and come down for to day I must abide at thy house 6 And he made haste and came down and received him joyfully 7 And when they saw it they all murmured saying That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner 8 And Zacheus stood and said unto the Lord behold Lord the half of my goods I give to the poor and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation I restore him four-fold 9 And Jesus said unto him This day is salvation come to this house forsomuch as he also is the son of Abraham 10 * Matth. 18.11 For the son of man is come to seek to save that which was lost 11 And as they heard these things he added and spake a parable because he was nigh to Jerusalem and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear 12 * Matth. 25.14 He said therefore A certain noble man went into a far countrey to receive for himself a kingdom and to return 13 And he called his ten servants and delivered them ten ‖ Mina here translated a pound is twelve ounces and an half which according to five shillings the ounce is three pounds two shillings six pence pounds and said unto them Occupy till I come 14 But his citizens hated him and sent a message after him saying We will not have this man to reign over us 15 And it came to pass that when he was returned having received the kingdom then he commanded these servants to be called unto him to whom he had given the money that he might know how much every man had gained by trading 16 Then came the first saying Lord thy pound hath gained ten pounds 17 And he said unto him Well thou good servant because thou hast been faithful in a very little have thou authority over ten cities 18 And the second came saying Lord thy pound hath gained five pounds 19 And he said likewise to him Be thou also over five cities 20 And another came saying Lord behold here is thy pound which I have kept laid up in a napkin 21 For I feared thee because thou art an austere man thou takest up that thou layedst not down and reapest that thou didst not sow 22 And he saith unto him Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee thou wicked servant Thou knewest that I was an austere man taking up that I laid not down and reaping that I did not sow 23 Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury 24 And he said unto them that stood by Take from him the pound and give it to him that hath ten pounds 25 And they said unto him Lord he hath ten pounds 26 For I say unto you * Matth. 13.12 That unto every one which hath shall be given and from him that hath not even that he hath shall be taken away from him 27 But those mine enemies which would not that I should reign over them bring hither and slay them before me 28 ¶ And when he had thus spoken he went before ascending up to Jerusalem 29 * Matth. 21.1 And it came to pass when

stone me 33 The Jews answered him saying For a good work we stone thee not but for blasphemy and because that thou being a man makest thy self God 34 Jesus answered them * Psal 8â— 6 Is it not written in your law I said Ye are gods 35 If he called them gods unto whom the word of God came and the scripture cannot be broken 36 Say ye of him whom the Father hath sanctified and sent into the world Thou blasphemest because I said I am the Son of God 37 If I do not the works of my Father beleeve me not 38 But if I do though ye beleeve not me beleeve the works that ye may know and beleeve that the Father is in me and I in him 39 Therefore they sought again to take him but he escaped out of their hand 40 And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized and there he abode 41 And many reforted unto him and said John did no miracle but all things that John spake of this man were true 42 And many beleeved on him there CHAP. XI 1 Christ raiseth Lazarus four days buried 4â— Many Jews beleeve 47 The bâ—â—h priests and Pharisees gather a council against Christ 49 Caiaphas prophesieth 54 Jesus hid himself 55 At the pass-over they enquire after him and lay wait for him NOw a certain man was sick named Lazarus of Bethany the town of Mary and her sister Martha 2 * Mat. 26.7 It was that Mary which anoâ—nted the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair whose brother Lazarus was sick 3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him saying Lord behold he whom thou lovest is sick 4 When Jesus heard that he said This sickness is not unto death but for the glory of God that the Son of God might be glorified thereby 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus 6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick he abode two days still in the same place where he was 7 Then after that saith he to his disciples Let us go into Judea again 8 His disciples say unto him Master the Jews of late sought to stone thee and goest thou thither again 9 Jesus answered Are there not twelve hours in the day If any man walk in the day he stumbleth not because he seeth the light of this world 10 But if a man walk in the night he stumbleth because there is no light in him 11 These things said he and after that he saith unto them Our friend Lazarus sleepeth but I go that I may awake him out of sleep 12 Then said his disciples Lord if he sleep he shall do well 13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep 14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly Lazarus is dead 15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there to the intent ye may beleeve nevertheless let us go unto him 16 Then said Thomas which is called Didymus unto his fellow-disciples Let us also go that we may die with him 17 Then when Jesus came he sound that he had lien in the grave four days already 18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem ‖ That is about two miles about fifteen furlongs off 19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary to comfort them concerning their brother 20 Then Martha assoon as she heard that Jesus was coming went and met him but Mary sat still in the house 21 Then said Martha unto Jesus Lord if thou hadst been here my brother had not died 22 But I know that even now whatsoever thou wilt ask of God God will give it thee 23 Jesus saith unto her Thy brother shall rise again 24 Martha saith unto him * Luk. 14.14 Chap. 5.29 I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day 25 Jesus said unto her I am the resurrection and the * Ch. â— 35 life he that beleeveth in me tâ—ough he were dead yet shall he live 26 And whosoever liveth and beleeveth in me shall never die Beleevest thou this 27 She saith unto him Yea Lord I beleeve that thou art the Christ the Son of God which should come into the world 28 And when she had so said she went her way and called Mary her sister secretly saying The Master is come and calleth for thee 29 Assoon as she heard that she arose quickly and came unto him 30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town but was in that place where Martha met him 31 The Jews then which were with her in the house and comforted her when they saw Mary that she rose up hastily and went out followed her saving She goeth unto the grave to weep there 32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was and saw him she fell down at his feet saying unto him Lord if thou hadst been here my brother had not died 33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping and the Jews also weeping which came with her he groaned in the spirit and †Gr. be troubled himself was troubled 34 And said Where have ye laid him They say unto him Lord come and see 35 Jâ—sus wept 36 Then said the Jews Behold how he loved him 37 And some of them said Could not this man * Chap. 9.6 which opened the eyes of the blinde have caused that even this man should not have died 38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave It was a cave and a stone lay upon it 39 Jesus said Take ye away the stone Martha the sister of him that was dead saith unto him Lord by this time he stinketh for he hath been dead four days 40 Jesus saith unto her Said I not unto thee that if thou wouldest beleeve thou shouldest see the glory of God 41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was said And Jesus list up his eyes and said Father I thank thee that thou hast heard me 42 And I knew that thou hearest me always but because of the people which stand by I said it that they may beleeve that thou hast sent me 43 And when he thus had spoken he cried with a loud voice Lazarus come forth 44 And he that was dead came sorth bound hand and foot with grave-clothes and his face was bound about with a napkin Jesus saith unto them Loose him and let him go 45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary and had seen the things which Jesus did beleeved on him 46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees and told them what things Jesus had done 47 ¶ Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council and said What do we for this man doeth many miracles 48 If we let him thus alone all men will beleeve on him and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation 49 And one of them named Caiaphas being the high
of the angels said he at any time * Psal 110.1 Matth. 22 44. II. 1 We ought to be obedient to Christ Jesus 5 and that because he vouchsafed to take our nature upon him 14 as it was necessary THerefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard lest at any time we should †Gr. run out as seeking vessels let them slip 2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward 3 How shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him 4 God also bearing them witness both with signs and wonders and with dâ—vers miracles and ‖ Or distribution gifts of the holy Ghost according to his own will 5 For unto the angles hath he not put in subjection the world to come whereof we speak 6 But one in a certain place testified saying * Psal 8.4 What is man that thou art mindful of him or the son of man that thou visitest him 7 Thou madest him ‖ Or a little while inferiour to a little lower then the angels thou crownedst him with glory honour didst set him over the works of thy hands 8 * 1 Cor. 15.27 Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet For in that he put all in subjection under him he left nothing that is not put under him But now we see not yet all things put under him 9 But we see Jesus who was made a little lower then the angels ‖ Or by for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honour that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man 10 For it became him for whom are all things and by whom are all things in bringing many sons unto glory to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings 11 For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren 12 Saying * Psal 22.22 I will declare thy name unto my brethren in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee 13 And again * Psal 18.2 I will put my trust in him And again * Isa 8.18 Behold I and the children which God hath given me 14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and bloud he also himself likewise took part of the same that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death that is the devil 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their life-time subject to bondage 16 For verily †Gr. he taketh not hold of angels but of the seed of Abraham he taketh hold he took not on him the nature of angels but he took on him the seed of Abraham 17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God to make reconciliation for the sins of the people 18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted he is able to succour them that are tempted CHAP. III. 1 Christ is more worthy then Moses 7 therefore if we beleeve not in him we shall be more worthy punishment then hard-hearted Israel WHerefore holy brethren partakers of the heavenly calling consider the Apostle and high Priest of our profession Christ Jesus 2 Who was faithful to him that †Gr. made 1 Sam. 12.6 appointed him as also * Num. 12.7 Moses was faithful in all his house 3 For this man was counted worthy of more glory then Moses in as much as he who hath builded the house hath more honour then the house 4 For every house is builded by some man but he that built all things is God 5 And Moses verily was faithful in all his house as a servant for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after 6 But Christ as a Son over his own house whose house are we if we hold fast the confidence the rejoycing of the hope firm unto the end 7 Wherefore as the holy Ghost saith * Psal 95.7 Chap. 4.7 To day if ye will hear his voice 8 Harden not your hearts as in the provocation in the day of temptation in the wilderness 9 When your fathers tempted me proved me and saw my works fourty years 10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation and said They do alway err in their heart and they have not known my ways 11 So I sware in my wrath †Gr. If they shall enter They shall not enter into my rest 12 Take heed brethren lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God 13 But exhort one another daily while it is called To day lest any of you be hardned through the deceitfulness of sin 14 For we are made partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence sted fast unto the end 15 While it is said To day if ye will hear his voice harden not your hearts as in the provocation 16 For some when they had heard did provoke howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses 17 But with whom was he grieved fourty years was it not with them that had sinned * Num. 14.29 c. whose carcases fell in the wilderness 18 And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest but to them that beleeved not 19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief CHAP. IV. 1 The rest of Christians is attained by faith 12 The power of Gods word 14 By our high priest Jesus the Son of God subject to infirmities but not sin 16 we must and may go boldly to the throne of grace LEt us therefore fear lest a promise being left us of entring into his rest any of you should seem to come short of it 2 For unto us was the gospel preached as well as unto them but †Gr. the word of hearing the word preached did not profit them ‖ Or because they were not united by faith to not being mixed with faith in them that heard it 3 For we which have beleeved do enter into rest as he said * Psal 95.11 As I have sworn in my wrath If they shall enter into my rest although the works were finished from the foundation of the world 4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise * Gen. 2 2. And God did rest the seventh day from all his works 5 And in this place again If they shall enter into my rest 6
into lasciviousness and denying the onely Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ 5 I will therefore put you in remembrance though ye once knew this how that the Lord having saved the people out of the land of Egypt afterward * Num. 14.37 destroyed them that beleeved not 6 And * 2 Pet. 2.4 the angels which kept not their ‖ Or principality first eslate but lest their own habitation he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgement of the great day 7 Even as * Gen. 19.24 Sodom and Gomorrha and the cities about them in like manner giving themselves over to fornication and going after †Gr. other strange flesh are set forth for an example suffering the vengeance of eternal fire 8 * 2 Pet. 2.10 11. Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh despise dominion and speak evil of dignities 9 Yet Michael the archangel when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses durst not bring against him a railing accusation but said * Zech. 3.2 The Lord rebuke thee 10 But these speak evil of those things which they know not but what they know naturally as brute beasts in those things they corrupt themselves 11 Wo unto them for they have gone in the way of Cain and * 2 Pet. 2.15 ran greedily after the errour of Balaam for reward and perished in the gain-saying of Core 12 These are spots in your feasts of charity when they feast with you seeding themselves without fear * 2 Pet. 2.17 clouds they are without water carried about of winds trees whose fruit withereth without fruit twice dead plucked up by the roots 13 Raging waves of the sea foaming out their own shame wandring stars to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever 14 And Enoch also the seventh from Adam prophesied of these saying Behold the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints 15 To execute judgement upon all and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him 16 These are murmurers complainers walking after their own lusts and their mouth speaketh great swelling words having mens persons in admiration because of advantage 17 But beloved remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ 18 How that they told you * 1 Tim. 4.1 2 Tim. 3.1 2 Pet. 3.3 there should be mockers in the last time who should walk after their own ungodly lusts 19 These be they who separate themselves sensual having not the Spirit 20 But ye beloved building up yourselves on your most holy faith praying in the holy Ghost 21 Keep yourselves in the love of God looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life 22 And of some have compassion making a difference 23 And others save with fear pulling them out of the fire hating even the garment spotted by the flesh 24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy 25 To the onely wise God our Saviour be glory and majesty dominion and power both now and ever Amen ¶ The REVELATION of S. I. 4 John writeth his revelation to the seven churches of Asia signified by the seven golden candlesticks 7 The coming of Christ 14 His glorious power and majesty THe revelation of Jesus Christ which God gave unto him to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John 2 Who bare record of the word of God and of the testimony of Jesus Christ and of all things that he saw 3 Blessâ—d is he that readeth and they that hear the words of this prophesie and keep those things which are written therein for the time is at hand 4 JOhn to the seven churches which are in Asia-Grace be unto you and peace from him * Exod. 4.14 which is and which was and which is to come and from the seven spirits which are before his throne 5 And from Jesus Christ who is the faithful witness and the * 1 Cor. 15.20 Col. 1.18 first-begotten of the dead and the prince of the kings of the earth Unto him that loved us * Heb. 9.14 1 Joh. 1.7 and washed us from our sins in his own bloud 6 And hath * 1 Pet. 2.5 made us kings and priests unto God and his Father to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever Amen 7 * Dan. 7.13 Mat. 24.30 Behold he cometh with clouds and every eye shall see him and * Zec. 12.10 they also which pierced him and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him even so Amen 8 * Chap. 21.6 and 22.13 I am Alpha and Omega the beginning and the ending saith the Lord which is and which was and which is to come the Almighty 9 I John who also am your brother and companion in tribulation and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ was in the isle that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ 10 I was in the Spirit on the Lords day and heard behinde me a great voice as of a trumpet 11 Saying I am Alpha and Omega the first and the last and What thou seest write in a book and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia unto Ephesus and unto Smyrna and unto Pergamos and unto Thyatira and unto Sardis and unto Philadelphia and unto Laodicea 12 And I turned to see the voice that spake with me And being turned I law seven golden candlesticks 13 And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man * Dan. 10. â—â— 6. clothed with a garment down to the foot and girt about the paps with a golden girdle 14 His head and his hairs were white like wooll as white as snow and his eyes were as a flame of fire 15 And his feet like unto fine brass as if they burned in a furnace and his voice as the sound of many waters 16 And he had in his right hand seven stars and out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength 17 And when I saw him I fell at his feet as dead and he laid his right hand upon me saying unto me Fear not * Is 41.4 44.6 I am the first and the last 18 I am he that liveth and was dead and behold I am alive for evermore Amen and have the keys of hell and of death 19 Write the things which thou hast seen and the things which are and the things which shall be hereafter 20 The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand and the
seven golden candlesticks The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches CHAP. II. What is commanded to be written to the angels that is the ministers of the churches of 1 Ephesus 8 Smyrna 12 Pergamos 18 Thyatira and what is commended or found wanting in them UNto the angel of the church of Ephesus write These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks 2 I know thy works and thy labour and thy patience and how thou canst not bear them which are evil and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles and are not and hast found them liars 3 And hast born and hast patience and for my names sake hast laboured and hast not fainted 4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee because thou hast left thy first love 5 Remember therefore from whence thou art faln and repent and do the first works or else I will come unto thee quickly and will remove thy candlestick out of his place except thou repent 6 But this thou hast that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans which I also hate 7 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life which is in the midst of the paradise of God 8 And unto the Angel of the church in Smyrna write These things saith the first and the last which was dead and is alive 9 I know thy works and tribulation and poverty but thou art rich and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews and are not but are the synagogue of Satan 10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer behold the devil shall cast some of you into prison that ye may be tried and ye shall have tribulation ten days be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life 11 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death 12 And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges 13 I know thy works and where thou dwellest even where Satans seat is and thou holdest fast my name and hast not denied my faith even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr who was slain among you where Satan dwelleth 14 But I have a few things against thee because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of * Num. 25. Balaam who taught Balac to cast a stumbling-block before the children of Israel to eat things sacrificed unto idols and to commit fornication 15 So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans which thing I hate 16 Repent or else I will come unto thee quickly and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth 17 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna and will give him a white stone and in the stone a new name written which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it 18 And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write These things saith the Son of God who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire and his feet are like fine brass 19 I know thy works and charity and service and faith and thy patience and thy works and the last to be more then the first 20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee because thou sufferest that woman * â— Kin. 16. â—1 Jezabel which calleth her self a prophetess to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication and to eat things sacrificed unto idols 21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication and she repented not 22 Behold I will cast her into a bed and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation except they repent of their deeds 23 And I will kill her children with death and all the churches shall know that * Ps 7.9 Jer. 11.20 17.10 I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts and I will give unto every one of you according to your works 24 But unto you I say and unto the rest in Thyatira As many as have not this doctrine and which have not known the depths of Satan as they speak I will put upon you none other burden 25 But that which ye have already hold fast till I come 26 And he that overcometh and keepeth my works unto the end to him will I give power over the nations 27 * Psal 2.6 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers even as I received of my Father 28 And I will give him the morning star 29 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches CHAP. III. 2 The angel of the church of Sardis is reproved 3 exhorted to repent and threatned if he do not repent 8 The angel of the church of Philadelphia 10 is approved for his dilâ—â—enâ—e and patience 15 The angel of Laodicea is rebuzed for being neither hot nor cold 19 and admonished to be more zealous 20 Christ standeth at the door and knocketh ANd unto the angel of the church in Sardis write These things saith he that hath the seven spirits of God and the seven stars I know thy works that thou hast a name that thou livest and art dead 2 Be watchful and strengthen the things which remain that are ready to die for I have not found thy works perfect before God 3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard and hold fast and repent * 1 Thes 5. â— 2 Pet. 3.10 Ch 16.15 If therefore thou shalt not watch I will come on thee as a thief thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee 4 Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments and they shall walk with me in white for they are worthy 5 He that overcometh the same shall be clothed in white raiment and I will not blot out his name out of the * Phil. 4.3 Ch. 20.12 book of life but I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels 6 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches 7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write These things saith he that is holy he that is true he that hath * Is 2â— 22 the key of David he that openeth and no man shutteth and shutteth no man openeth 8 I know thy works behold I have set before thee an open door and no man can shut it for thou hast a little strength and hast kept my word and hast not denied
the earth and such as are in the sea and all that are in them heard I saying Blessing and honour and glory and power be unto him that sitteth upon the throne and unto the Lamb for ever and ever 14 And the four beasts said Amen And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever CHAP. VI. 1 The opening of the seals in order and what followed thereupon containing a prophesie to the end of the world ANd I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals and I heard as it were the noise of thunder one of the four beasts saying Come see 2 And I saw and behold a white horse and he that sat on him had a howe and a crown was given unto him and he went forth conquering and to conquer 3 And when he had opened the second seal I heard the second beast say Come and see 4 And there went out another horse that was red and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth and that they should kill one another and there was given unto him a great sword 5 And when he had opened the third seal I heard the third beast say Come and see And I beheld and so a black horse and he that sat on him had a pair of ballances in his hand 6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say ‖ The word choenix signifieth a measure containing one wine-quart and the twelfth part of a quart A measure of wheat for a peny and three measures of barley for a peny and see thou hurt not the oyl and the wine 7 And when he had opened the fourth seal I heard the voice of the fourth beast say Come and see 8 And I looked and behold a pale horse and his name that sat on him was Death and hell followed with him and power was given ‖ Or to him unto them over the fourth part of the earth to kill with sword and with hunger and with death and with the beasts of the earth 9 And when he had opened the fifth seal I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God and for the testimony which they held 10 And they cried with a loud voice saying How long O Lord holy and true dost thou not judge and avenge our bloud on them that dwell on the earth 11 And white robes were given unto every one of them and it was said unto them that they should rest yet for a little season until their fellow-servants also and their brethren that should be killed as they were should be fulfilled 12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal and lo there was a great earthquake and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair and the moon became as bloud 13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth even as a fig tree casteth her ‖ Or. â—â—un figs. untimely figs when she is shaken of a mighty wind 14 * Isa 34.4 And the heaven departed as a scrowl when it is rolled together and every mountain and island were moved out of their places 15 And the kings of the earth and the great men and the rich men and the chief captains and the mighty men and every bond man and every free-man * Isa 2.19 hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains 16 * Hos 10.8 Luke 23.30 And said to the mountains and rocks Fall on us and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb 17 For the great day of his wrath is come and who shall be able to stand CHAP. VII 3 An angel sealeth the servants of God in their foreheads 4 The number of them that were sealed of the tribes of Israel a certain number 9 of all other nations an innumerable multitude which stand before the throne clad in white robes and palms in their hands 14 Their robes were washed in the bloud of the Lamb. ANd after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth holding the four winds of the earth that the wind should not blow on the earth nor on the sea nor on any tree 2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east having the seal of the living God and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea 3 Saying Hurt not the earth neither the seâ— nor the trees till we have * Ezâ—â— 9.4 sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads 4 And I heard the number of them which were sealed and there were sealed an hundred and fourty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel 5 Of the tribe of Juda were sealed twelve thousand Of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand Of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand 6 Of the tribe of A set were sealed twelve thousand Of the tribe of Nephthalim were sealed twelve thousand Of the tribe of Manasses were sealed twelve thousand 7 Of the tribe of Simeon were sealed twelve thousand Of the tribe of Levi were sealed twelve thousand Of the tribe of Isachar were sealed twelve thousand 8 Of the tribe of Zabulon were sealed twelve thousand Of the tribe of Joseph were sealed twelve thousand Of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand 9 After this I beheld and lo a great multitude which no man could number of all nations and kindreds and people and tongues stood before the throne and before the Lamb clothed with white robes and palms in their hands 10 And cried with a loud voice saying Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne and unto the Lamb. 11 And all the angels stood round about the throne and about the elders and the four beasts and fell before the throne on their faces and worshipped God 12 Saying A men Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be unto our God for ever and ever Amen 13 And one of the elders answered saying unto me What are these which are arayed in white robes and whence came they 14 And I said unto him Sir Thou knowest And he said to me These are they which came out of great tribulation and have washed their robes and made them white in the bloud of the Lamb. 15 Therefore are they before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple and he that sitteth on the throne shall * Chap. 21.3 dwell among them 16 * Isa 49.10 They shall hunger no more neither thirst any more neither shall the sun light on them nor any heat 17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters * Isa 2â— 8 Chap. 21.4 and God shall wipe away all tears from
pomegranate upon the net-work were an hundred round about 24 ¶ And the captain of the guard took Seraiah the chief priest and Zephaniah the second priest and the three keepers of the †Heb. threshold door 25 He took also out of the city an eunuch which had the charge of the men of war and seven men of them that †Heb. saw the face of the king were near the kings person which were found in the city and the ‖ Or scribe of the captain of the host principal scribe of the host who mustered the people of the land and threescore men of the people of the land that were found in the midst of the city 26 So Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard took them and brought them to the king of babylon to Riblah 27 And the king of Babylon smote them and put them to death in Riblah in the land of Hamath Thus Judah was carried away captive out of his own land 28 This is the people whom Nebuchadrezzar carried away captive in the seventh year three thousand Jews and three and twenty 29 In the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar he carried away captive from Jerusalem eight hundred thirty and two †Heb. souls persons 30 In the three and twentieth year of Nebuchadrezzar Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away captive of the Jews seven hundred fourty and five persons all the persons were four thousand and six hundred 31 ¶ And it came to pass in the seven and thirtieth year of the captivity of Jehosachin king of Judah in the twelfth moneth in the five and twentieth day of the moneth that Evil-merodach king of Babylon in the first year of his reign lilted up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah and brought him forth out of prison 32 And spake †Heb. good things with him kindly unto him and set his throne above the throne of the kings that were with him in Babylon 33 And changed his prison-garments and he did continually eat bread before him all the days of his life 34 And for his diet there was a continual diet given him of the king of Babylon †Heb. the matter of the day in his day every day a portion until the day of his death all the days of his life ¶ The LAMENTATIONS of JEREMIAH CHAP. 1. 1 The miserable estate of Jerusalem by reason of her sin 12 She complaineth of her grief 18 and confesseth Gods judgement to be righteous HOw doth the city sit solitary that was full of people how is she become as a widow she that was great among the nations and princess among the provinces how is she become tributary 2 She * Jer. 13.17 weepeth sore in the * Job 7.3 night and her tears are on her cheeks among all her lovers she hath none to comfort her all her friends have dealt treacherously with her they are become her enemies 3 Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction and †Heb. for the treateâ— of servitude because of great servitude she dwelleth among the heathen she findeth no rest all her persecutours overtook her between the straits 4 The ways of Zion do mourn because none come to the solemn feasts all her gates are desolate her priests sigh her virgins are afflicted and she is in bitterness 5 Her adversaries * Deu. 28.13 14. are the chief her enemies prosper for the LORD hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions her * Jer. 52.28 children are gone into captivity before the enemy 6 And from the daughter of Zion all her beauty is departed her princes are become like harts that finde no pasture and they are gone without strength before the pursuer 7 Jerusalem remembred in the days of her affliction and of her miseries all her ‖ Or desirable pleasant things that she had in the days of old when her people fell into the hand of the enemy and none did help her the adversaries saw her and did mock at her sabbaths 8 Jerusalem hath grievously sinned therefore she †Heb. is become 〈◊〉 removing or wandering is removed all that honoured her despise her because they have seen her nakedness yea she sigheth and turneth backward 9 Her filthiness is in her skirts she remembreth not her last end therefore she came down wonderfully she had no comforter O LORD behold my affliction for the enemy hath magnified himself 10 The adversary hath spread out his hand upon all her ‖ Or desirable pleasant things for she hath seen that the heathen entred into her sanctuary whom thou didst command that * Deu. 23.3 they should not enter into thy congregation 11 All her people sigh they seek bread they have given their pleasant things for meat ‖ Or to make the soul to come again to relieve the soul see O LORD and consider for I am become vile 12 ¶ ‖ Or It is nothing Is it nothing to you all ye that †Heb. pass by the way pass by behold and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow which is done unto me wherewith the LORD hath afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger 13 From above hath he sent fire into my bones and it prevaileth against them he hath spread a not for my feet he hath turned me back he hath made me desolate and saint all the day 14 The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand they are wreathed and come up upon my neck he hath made my strength to fall the Lord hath delivered me into their hands from whom I am notable to rise up 15 The Lord hath troden under foot all my mighty men in the midst of me he hath called an assembly against me to crush my young men the Lord hath troden ‖ Or the wine-press of the viram c. the virgin the daughter of Judah as in a wine-press 16 For these things I weep * Jer. 13.17 and 14.17 Ch. 2.18 mine eye mine eye runneth down with water because the comforter that should †Heb. tâ—mâ— back relieve my soul is far from me my children are desolate because the enemy prevailed 17 Zion spreadeth forth her hands and there is none to comfort her the LORD hath commanded concerning Jacob that his adversaries should be round about him Jerusalem is as a menstruous woman among them 18 ¶ The LORD is * Dan. 9.7 righteous for I have rebelled against his †Heb. mouth commandment hear I pray you all people and behold my sorrow my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity 19 I called for my lovers but they deceived me my priests and mine elders gave up the ghost in the city while they sought their meat to relieve their souls 20 Behold O LORD for I am in distress my * Iâ— 15.11 Jer. 43.35 bowels are troubled mine heart is turned within me for I have grievously rebelled abroad the sword bereaveth at
home there is as death 21 They have heard that I sigh there is none to comfort me all mine enemies have heard of my trouble they are glad that thou hast done it thou wilt bring the day that thou hast ‖ Or â—â—â—laimed called and they shall be like unto me 22 Let all their wickedness come before thee and do unto them as thou hast done unto me for all my transgressions for my sighs are many and my heart is saint CHAP. II. 1 Jeremiah lamenteth the misery of Jerusalem 20 He complaineth thereof to God HOw hath the Lord covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger and cast down from heaven unto the earth the beauty of Israel and remembred not his footstool in the day of his anger 2 The Lord hath swallowed up all the habitations of Jacob and hath not pitted he hath thrown down in his wrath the strong holds of the daughter of Judah he hath †Heb. male to south brought them down to the ground he hath polluted the kingdom and the princes thereof 3 He hath cut off in his fierce anger all the horn of Israel he hath drawn back his right hand from before the enemy and he burned against Jacob like a flaming fire which devoureth round about 4 He hath bent his bowe like an enemy he stood with his right hand as an adversary and slew †Heb. all the desireable of the eye all that were pleasant to the eye in the tabernacle of the daughter of Zion he poured out his fury like fire 5 The Lord was as an enemy he hath swallowed up Israel he hath swallowed up all her palaces he hath destroyed his strong holds and hath increased in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation 6 And he hath violently * Ps 80.12 and 89.40 Isa 5.5 taken away his ‖ Or â—edâ—e tabernacle as if it were of a garden he hath destroyed his places of the assembly the LORD hath caused the solemn feasts and sabbaths to be forgotten in Zion and hath despised in the indignation of his anger the king and the priest 7 The Lord hath cast off his altar he hath abhorred his sanctuary he hath †Heb. Sout up given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces they have made a noise in the house of the LORD as in the day of a solemn feast 8 The LORD hath purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion he hath stretched out a line he hath not withdrawn his hand from †Heb. swallowing up destroying therefore he made the rampart and the wall to lament they languished together 9 Her gates are sunk into the ground he hath destroyed and broken her bars her king and her princes are among the Gentiles the law is no more her * Ps 74.9 prophets also finde no vision from the LORD 10 The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground and keep silence they have cast up dust upon their heads they have girded themselves with sackcloth the virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground 11 Mine eyes do fail with tears my bowels are troubled my liver is poured upon the earth for the destruction of the daughter of my people because the children and the sucklings ‖ Or saint swoon in the streets of the city 12 They say to their mothers Where is corn and wine when they swooned as the wounded in the streets of the city when their soul was poured out into their mothers bosom 13 What thing shall I take to witness for thee what thing shall I liken to thee O daughter of Jerusalem what shall I equal to thee that I may comfort thee O virgin daughter of Zion for thy breach is great like the sea who can heal thee 14 Thy * Jer. 2.8 and 5.31 and 14.14 and 23.16 prophets have seen vain and foolish things for thee and they have not discovered thine iniquity to turn away thy captivity but have seen for thee false burdens and causes of banishment 15 All that pass †Heb. by the way by clap their hands at thee they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem saying Is this the câ—ty that men call * Ps 48.2 the perfection of beauty the joy of the whole earth 16 All thine enemies have opened their mouth against thee they hiss and gnash the teeth they say We have swallowed her up certainly this is the day that we looked for we have found we have seen it 17 The LORD hath done that which he had * Lev. 26.16 devised he hath fulfilled his word that he had commanded in the days of old he hath thrown down and hath not pitied and he hath caused thine enemy to rejoyce over thee he hath set up the horn of thine adversaries 18 Their heart cried unto the Lord O wall of the daughter of Zion * Jer. 14.17 Ch. â— 16 let tears run down like a river day and night give thy self no rest let not the apple of thine eye cease 19 Arise cry out in the night in the beginning of the watches pour out thine heart like water before the face of the Lord lift up thy hands towards him for the life of thy young children that faint for hunger in the top of every street 20 ¶ Behold O LORD and consider to whom thou hast done this shall the women eat their fruit and children ‖ Or swaddled with their hands of a span long shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the LORD 21 The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets my virgins and my young men are fain by the sword thou hast slain them in the day of thy anger thou hast killed and not pitied 22 Thou hast called as in a solemn day my terrours round about so that in the day of the LORDS anger none escaped nor remained those that I have swaddled and brought up hath mine enemy consumed CHAP. III. 1 The faithful bewall their â—alamities 22 By the mercies of God they nourish their hope 37 They acknowledge Gods justice 55 They pray for deliverance 64 and venâ—eance on their enemies I Am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath 2 He hath led me and brought me into darkness but not into light 3 Surely against me is he turned he turneth his hand against me all the day 4 My flesh and my skin hath he made old he hath broken my bones 5 He hath builded against me and compassed me with gall and travel 6 He hath set me in dark places as they that be dead of old 7 He hath hedged me about that I cannot get out he hath made my chain heavy 8 Also when I cry and shout he shutteth out my prayer 9 He hath enclosed my ways with hewn stone the hath made my paths crooked 10 He was unto me as a bear lying in wait and as a
15 And these are they by the way-side where the word is sown but when they have heard Satan cometh immediately and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts 16 And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground who when they have heard the word immediately receive it with gladness 17 And have no root in themselves and so endure but for a time afterward when affliction or persecution ariseth for the words sake immediately they are offended 18 And these are they which are sown among thorns such as hear the word 19 And the cares of this world * 1 Tim. 6.17 and the deceitfulness of riches and the lusts of other things entring in choke the word and it becometh unfruitful 20 And these are they which are sown on good ground such as hear the word and receive it and bring forth fruit some thirty-fold some sixty and some an hundred 21 ¶ * Matth. 5.5.15 And he said unto them Is a candle brought to be put under a ‖ The word in the original signifieth a less measure as Matth. 5.15 bushel or under a bed and not to be set on a candlestick 22 * Matth. 10.26 For there is nothing hid which shall not be manifested neither was any thing kept secret but that it should come abroad 23 If any man have ears to hear let him hear 24 And he said unto them Take heed what you hear * Matth. 7.2 with what measure ye mete it shall be measured to you and unto you that hear shall more be given 25 * Matth. 13.12 For he that hath to him shall be given and he that hath not from him shall be taken even that which he hath 26 ¶ And he said So is the kingdom of God as if a man should cast seed into the ground 27 And should sleep and rise night and day and the seed should spring and grow up he knoweth not how 28 For the earth bringeth forth fruit of her self first the blade then the ear after that the full corn in the ear 29 But when the fruit is ‖ Or ripe brought forth immediately he putteth in the sickle because the harvest is come 30 ¶ And he said * Matth. 13.31 Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God or with what comparison shall we compare it 31 It is like a grain of mustard-seed which when it is sown in the earth is less then all the seeds that be in the earth 32 But when it is sown it groweth up and becometh greater then all herbs and shooteth out great branches so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it 33 * Matth. 13.34 And with many such parables spake he the word unto them as they were able to hear it 34 But without a parable spake he not unto them and when they were alone he expounded all things to his disciples 35 * Matth. 8. â—3 And the same day when the even was come he saith unto them Let us pass over unto the other side 36 And when they had sent away the multitude they took him even as he was in the ship and there were also with him other little ships 37 And there arose a great storm of wind and the waves beat into the ship so that it was now full 38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship asleep on a pillow and they awake him and say unto him Master carest thou not that we perish 39 And he arose and rebuked the wind and said unto the sea Peace be still and the wind ceased and there was a great calm 40 And he said unto them Why are ye so fearful how is it that you have no faith 41 And they feared exceedingly and said one to another What manner of man is this that even the wind and the sea obey him CHAP. V. 1 Christ delivering the possessed of the legion of devils 13 they enter into the swine 25 He healeth the woman of the bloudy issue 35 and raiseth from death Jairus his daughter ANd * Matth. 8.28 they came over unto the other side of the sea into the countrey of the Gadarenes 2 And when he was come out of the ship immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit 3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs and no man could binde him no not with chains 4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains and the chains had been plucked asunder by him and the fetters broken in pieces neither could any man tame him 5 And always night and day he was in the mountains and in the tombs crying and cuttâ—ng himself with stones 6 But when he saw Jesus afar off he ran and worshipped him 7 And cried with a loud voice and said What have I to do with thee Jesus thou Son of the most high God I adjure thee by God that thou torment me not 8 For he said unto him Come out of the man thou unclean spirit 9 And he asked him What is thy name And he answered saying My name is Legion for we are many 10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the countrey 11 Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding 12 And all the devils besought him saying Send us into the swine that we may enter into them 13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave And the unclean spirits went out and entred into the swine and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea they were about two thousand and were choked in the sea 14 And they that fed the swine fled and told it in the city and in the countrey And they went out to see what it was that was done 15 And they come to Jesus and see him that was possessed with the devil and had the legion sitting and clothed and in his right minde and they were afraid 16 And they that saw it told them how it befel to him that was possessed with the devil and also concerning the swine 17 And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts 18 And when he was come into the ship he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him 19 Howbeit Jesus suffered him not but saith unto him Go home to thy friends and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee and hath had compassion on thee 20 And he departed and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him and all men did marvel 21 And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side much people gathered unto him and he was nigh unto the sea 22 * Matth. 9.18 And behold there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue Jairus by name and when he saw him he fell at his feet 23 And besought him greatly saying My little daughter lieth at the
point of death I pray thee come and lay thy hands on her that she may be healed and she shall live 24 And Jesus went with him and much people followed him and thronged him 25 And a certain woman which had an issue of bloud twelve years 26 And had suffered many things of many physicians and had spent all that she had and was nothing bettered but rather grew worse 27 When she had heard of Jesus came in the preass behinde and touched his garment 28 For she said If I may touch but his clothes I shall be whole 29 And straightway the fountain of her bloud was dried up and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague 30 And Jesus immediately knowing in himself that vertue had gone out of him turned him about in the preass and said Who touched my clothes 31 And his disciples said unto him Thou seest the multitude thronging thee and sayest thou Who touched me 32 And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing 33 But the woman fearing and trembling knowing what was done in her came and fell down before him and told him all the truth 34 And he said unto her Daughter thy saith hath made thee whole go in peace and be whole of thy plague 35 While he yet spake there came from the ruler of the synagogues house certain which said Thy daughter is dead why troublest â—â—ou the Master any further 36 Assoon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue Be not afraid onely beleeve 37 And he suffered no man to follow him save Peter and James and John the brother of James 38 And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue and seeth the tumult and them that wept and wailed greatly 39 And when he was come in he saith unto them Why make ye this ado and weep the damsel is not dead but sleepeth 40 And they laughed him to scorn but when he had put them all out he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel and them that were with him and entreth in where the damsel was lying 41 And he took the damsel by the hand and said unto her Talitha cumi which is being interpreted Damsel I say unto thee arise 42 And straightway the damsel arose and walked for she was of the age of twelve years and they were astonished with a great astonishment 43 And he charged them straitly that no man should know it and commanded that something should be given her to eat CHAP. VI. 1 Christ is contemned of his countreymen 7 He giveth the twelve power over unclean spirits 14 Divers opinions of Christ 〈◊〉 John Baptist is beheaded 29 and buried 30 The apostles return from preaching 34 The miracle of five loaves and two fishes 48 Christ walketh on the sea 53 and bealeth all that touch him ANd * Matth. 13.54 he went out from thence and came into his own countrey and his disciples follow him 2 And when the sabbath-day was come he began to teach in the synagogue and many hearing him were aâ—tonished saying From whence hath this man these things and what wisdom is this which is given unto him that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands 3 Is not this the carpenter the son of Mary the brother of James and Joses and of Juda and Simon and are not his sisters here with us And they were offended at him 4 But Jesus said unto them * Joh. 4.44 A prophet is not without honour but in his own countrey and among his own kin and in his own house 5 And he could there do no mighty work save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk and healed them 6 And he marvelled because of their unbelief * Mat. 9.35 Luk. 13.22 And he went round about the villages teaching 7 ¶ * Mat. 10.1 And he calleth unto him the twelve and began to send them forth by two and two and gave them power over unclean spirits 8 And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey save a staff onely no scrip no bread no ‖ The word signifieth 〈◊〉 piâ—â—â— of brast money in valâ—â— somewhat less then a farthing Mat. 10.9 but 〈◊〉 it is taken in general for money money in their purse 9 But be shod with sandals and not put on two coats 10 And he said unto them In what place soever ye enter into an house there abide till ye depart from that place 11 * Mat 10.14 And whosoever shall not receive you nor hear you when ye depart thence * Act. 13.51 shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them Verily I say unto you it shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgement then for that city 12 And they went out and preached that men should repent 13 And they cast out many devils * Jam. 5.14 and anointed with oyl many that were sick and healed them 14 * Mat. 14.1 And king Herod heard of him for his name was spread abroad and he said that John the Baptist was risen from the dead and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him 15 Others said That it is Elias And others said That it is a prophet or as one of the prophets 16 * Luk. 3.19 But when Herod heard thereof he said It is John whom I beheaded he is risen from the dead 17 For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John and bound him in prison for Herodias sake his brother Philips wife for he had married her 18 For John had said unto Herod * Lev. 18.16 It is not lawful for thee to have thy brothers wife 19 Therefore Herodias had ‖ Or â—n inward grudge a quarrel against him and would have killed him but she could not 20 For Herod feared John knowing that he was a just man and an holy and ‖ Or kept â—im or saâ—ed â—im observed him and when he heard him he did many things and heard him gladly 21 And when a convenient day was come that Herod on his birth-day made a supper to his lords high captains and chief estates of Galilee 22 And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in and danced and pleased Herod and them that sat with him the king said unto the damsel Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt and I will give it thee 23 And he sware unto her Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me I will give it thee unto the hall of my kingdom 24 And she went forth and said unto her mother What shall I ask And she said The head of John the Baptist 25 And she came in straightway with haste unto the king and asked saying I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist 26 And the king was exceeding sorry yet for his oaths sake and for their sakes
